What kids love How old were you when you learnt to ride a bike? ‘Five and a half or six. I’m 10 this year!’
and playing acoustic and electric guitar. Yellow Submarine is my favourite song to play.’
When did you first get into BMXing? ‘Nearly two years ago. My mum took me to watch the BMXers near Hackney City Farm. I saw them jumping really high and going really fast and I just wanted to do the same.’
If you could only eat one type of food forever, what would it be? ‘Fish, then chocolate cake for pudding.’
Where do you go to ride your BMX? ‘On Sundays I go to the expert session with Hackney BMX club. Sometimes I just practise on street bumps and curbs.’ What do you love about BMXing? ‘I love going really fast, jumping and I’ve made loads of friends.’ What would you say to someone who wanted to try BMXing? ‘Give it a go, but it’s not easy, you need to be really good on your bike and have strong arms and legs. It’s scary when you’re jumping, so you need to be brave.’
What’s your favourite book? ‘I like The World’s Worst Children by David Walliams. It’s so funny. Peter Picker’s bogie was so big it rolled off and collected landmarks along the way – even the Queen when she was on the toilet!’ Do you have a favourite animal? ‘I like tigers or snakes, they’re quite dangerous and they’re top predators. If I could have a pet, I’d like a fish.’ What clothes do you wear when you’re not at school or BMXing? ‘I wear my BMX tops, jeans, Vans and I like denim jackets or bombers.’ Do you know any good jokes? ‘What do you get when you cross a snowman with a crocodile? Frostbite!’
What gear do you need? ‘I wear a full face helmet, body armour and Vans shoes. But if you’re just starting, you can wear a normal helmet with knee and elbow pads.’ What kind of music do you listen to? ‘Brian Jonestown Massacre, Beck, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and I listen to blues like Ray Charles.’ Do you have any other hobbies? ‘I love running, making model figures 15

Brand Focus: Tiba + Marl All hail the coolest changing bags… We talk to Lydia Barron, one of the founders and mama of two, about running a business, studio playlists and what’s in her bag Tell us how Tiba + Marl got started… ‘We launched in September 2015 and it’s been a real whirlwind! Anna [Tizard] and I laid our plans to start the business when our first kids were still tiny (we have two each now). We were just chatting about the lack of contemporary, fashion-led changing bags at the time and how we couldn’t find anything that we – or our mates – would want to buy. As we both came from a fashion design/buying background, it seemed the logical thing to create it ourselves!’ What’s the best part about running your own business? ‘Being your own boss and getting to work around childcare/lack of childcare. Getting our own studio – a creative space out of the house – has also been revolutionary! We love seeing our bags on real-life mums out and about, I don’t think we will ever get over that rush of excitement from seeing them IRL.’ Take us through a typical day at work… ‘Anna and I get to the studio around 9.30am after school/nursery drop-off. We start with a cup of tea and a natter, load up Spotify and collect our post – we usually have exciting boxes of new samples, fabric swatches and 18
prints to look at. We split the day-today tasks, so I send orders to our warehouse and reply to customers while Anna deals with our stockists. We never stop thinking of new ideas for our range. I’m always designing and sketching, and we are constantly adding to our mood boards! We eat at our desks if we are manic, or if the weather is nice we eat on the lovely terrace in our building or walk to a local cafe for a bit of headspace. We work until the very last minute before running out the door to collect the kids at around 5pm. Then we pick up work again when the kids are in bed!’
Any advice for new entrepreneurs? ‘Be prepared to work harder than ever before - you have to really believe in your idea and be prepared to put in the hours, blood, sweat and tears to make it happen. It isn’t easy, but when you succeed there’s no greater feeling than knowing YOU made it happen!’ What’s your favourite T+M piece? ‘It’s too hard to choose one, but our pink Elwood is a current fave! We have some great new product lines and collaborations coming soon too…’
What’s in your everyday bag? ‘Phone, notebook and pen, Klean What music do you play at your studio? Books
Author: Sarah Dyer The illustrator and award-winning author of our favourite first words books tells us how she works… How did you get to where you are now in your career? ‘I studied BA illustration at Kingston University and graduated in 2001, when I had my first picture book, Five Little Fiends published. I was lucky enough to be introduced to Bloomsbury Books in the second year of my degree, which really helped kick start my career in children’s books.’ Tell us about where you work… ‘I work in my garden studio, which my husband converted from the back half of the garage. Working so close to home has its advantages if I’m on a deadline and want to work when I’ve 32
put the kids to bed, but I miss sharing studio space and having people to talk to about ideas. I also get very torn between working and keeping the house tidy! I’m a creature of habit and always listen to BBC 6 Music and plan my day around DJs’ programmes.’ What’s your favourite thing to draw? ‘I love illustrating animals, they are by far my favourite thing. Except horses, I cannot draw horses!’ What inspires you creatively? ‘Other illustrators and picture book makers: Beatrice Alemagna, Marta Altes, Jon Klassen, Christian Robinson,
Kveta Pacovska, Carson Ellis and Laura Carlin. I’m also inspired by my six-year-old son Stanley’s drawings. I love to see how he describes animals and objects in ways I don’t think of.’ Tell us about your creative process… ‘I work on my roughs first – they are very rough too. I tend to work small scale as I can control my composition better. If I’m creating a picture book, I rough out all the spreads as a story board and get the narrative right. Then I move onto the illustrations. I work on the light box, using the rough underneath as a guide. I create textures and colours on bits of paper and use a mixture of neocolor pastels, pencils and collage. I stick everything in place with Pritt Stick! It’s very low key. I don’t use the computer at all. I prefer working directly onto paper and find the limitlessness of the computer too overwhelming.’
was published for 15 years. It’s only just gone out of print, but I’m hoping to bring it back with a special edition!’ What was your favourite book as a child? ‘I loved all the Richard Scarry books and Each Peach Pear Plum by Allan and Janet Ahlberg.’
What are you most proud of in your career so far? Which books do your children love? ‘My first book, Five Little Fiends. It has ‘Stanley has suddenly dived headfirst been translated into 11 languages and into chapter books so we are ploughing through all the classic Roald Dahl books at the moment, which I love. I’d forgotten how funny and silly they are. Ned is two and a half and into lots of picture books. He’ll choose from my ridiculously large collection and his favourites vary wildly from night to night. I try and rotate the books as much as possible so we don’t get bored!’ [Ned’s bookshelf, pictured left] Who are your favourite kids’ authors? ‘Roald Dahl, Julia Donaldson, Ed Vere and Alexis Decon. To write an excellent story is very tricky and these guys seem to nail it every time. Beegu 33
and Croc And Bird by Alexis Decon are two of my favourite stories.’
Are your kids artistic like you? ‘Ned enjoys mark making, but that can also be on the walls! However I often What are you working on now? get him to create new textures for my ‘I’m working on more illustrations paper resources as he makes lovely for my shop, which allows me total marks without worrying. Stanley is freedom to create any imagery I want getting more creative now, but he is and practise my illustration skills. I’m very precise and hates to make a also working on two new picture books mistake. His drawing is really lovely in early stages of development.’ though and I hope he does more of it.’
SARAH’S BOOKS EDIT ‘At home we have and love Britta Teckenstrup’s The Odd One Out and Stanley loves his Atlas Of Adventures. Story Path by Madalena Matoso looks brilliant (I wish I’d thought of it!) and will be next on our list to buy. For little children I think JoJo’s House is brilliant with the tiny books that slot into the house - a really nice gift. And ANYTHING by the genius Hervé Tullet is great - especially Press Here, which I find a wonderful antidote to the iPad. It only takes imagination and belief in the story and all those dots really do move around the page. So clever.’ The Book Of Things by Sarah Dyer, £8.99

How to make... a newspaper den Stuck inside on a rainy day? Build your own den with the kids – making it is part of the fun! 36
What you’ll need A stack of old newspapers Sticky tape Stapler Masking tape Instructions
1. Layer up two sheets of newspaper
and starting from a corner, roll them up tightly to make a rod. The tighter the better, as this will make the structure of your den nice and strong.
2. Secure with a piece of sticky tape. 3. Keep on rolling and sticking to make more rods.
4. Once you have three rods, stick
or staple the ends together to make a triangle. To make a small den, you need 12 triangles. The boys wanted a huge den, so we made 30! Bear in mind that smaller dens are stronger – and also quicker to make.
5. Start taping triangles together to
form a base around you. For a small den, you’ll need eight triangles for the base and four to make a pointy roof like a pyramid. But you can get creative and make the base any size you want. Our big den ended up a bit wonky – if you want it neat and balanced, keep it small and make sure all your rods and triangles are the same size.
6. Let the kids fill it with their
favourite toys and get playing!

Décor
Brand Focus: SevenSeventeen Interiors editor and stylist, Sarah Slade, and lifestyle journalist, Naomi Reilly, tell us about their brilliant, mood-boosting candles and their décor style How did SevenSeventeen start? Sarah: ‘We’ve been friends since art college and then worked at offices on the same floor (I was at ELLE Decoration and Naomi at ELLE). We both moved to the coast to raise families (I live in Worthing with my husband and two boys, and Naomi is in Brighton with her husband and three kids). We always talked about doing something of our own together. Creating a candle collection seemed a great way to express how important it is to take time to switch off and self-care at the end of a busy day.’ Naomi: ‘We’re both long-term candle 46
enthusiasts, but our Diptyque habit was draining our bank balances! We were excited to launch beautifully scented plant-based candles that you didn’t have to live on baked beans for a week to be able to afford.’ S: ‘Our brand is playful in tone, but we know the juggle is especially tough for a lot of women, so we decided to donate £1 from the sale of every candle to the pre and post-natal mental health charity, PANDAS.’ What’s your fave scent in your range? S: ‘We’re both fans of Hello Calm in Moroccan Rose. I’ve always been
drawn to rose-scented products and this is especially calming.’ N: ‘I also love the romantic qualities of All The Love in Black Pomegranate. It’s a fruity fragrance with a musky, woody edge and feels really decadent.’

Décor 5 Ways to Style a Perfect Shelfie SevenSeventeen share décor tips
1.
Look to the latest interiors trend, ‘Lagom’ to get started. This Swedish word translates as ‘just the right amount’ and is all about achieving balance so resist the urge to overdisplay and only choose pieces you truly love or which hold a special memory. Position each object so that it has a bit of breathing space to shine in its own right.
2.
Stick to a simple colour palette and focus instead on mixing materials like wood, glass and ceramic, as well as different textures, to give a sense of depth. That way an unexpected hit of colour – from a flower or postcard, for example – will feel more dramatic.
3.
Give your shelf an interesting skyline by displaying objects of varying heights and shapes. A spiky succulent contrasts beautifully with curvy vessels, while hanging a three-dimensional decoration from the bottom will cast intricate shadows as sunlight catches it.
4.
Incorporate items from the natural world to instantly inject a sense of peace – think treasures found beachcombing. Better still, bring your shelf to life with the flicker of a flame, such as our Hello Calm Moroccan Rose candle.
5.
Have fun being your own curator. Pair the old with the new, the design item with the supermarket bargain and include something that raises a smile when your eyes fall on it, such as a cute wooden bird. 48

Beauty Pro: Georgia Day Georgia Day is Space NK’s head of editorial & content and a mama of two. She shares her beauty routine, favourite buys and time-saving tips… Tell us a bit about you… ‘I’ve recently joined Space NK (I was previously creative director at Beauty Seen and Deputy Beauty Editor at ELLE). I live in the sleepy Berkshire village of Binfield with my two kids, Edie (4) and Arlo (16 months), my husband Jamie, who works in education and has an award-winning dad blog and Instagram channel (@adayinthelifedad), and our two big dogs, Bella and Blue.’ What’s your go-to beauty look? ‘I write about endless new trends and products, but my default beauty routine stays the same. Hair is pretty low down on my priorities — I don’t have loads of time to faff so I’m all about hardworking products that work fast. My mother would have a coronary if she knew, but I often 52
wash it and sleep with it damp. It gives a really nice beachy wave when I wake up, then I add a little body with a spritz of Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray (£20). Other than that, a good cut and colour by my dream team (George and Sally Northwood in London) are essentials. I’ve honed make-up down to seven minutes in the morning: primer (if I’m feeling fancy), foundation, concealer (I go big under the eyes as I need coverage there more than ever), a dusting of setting powder, a smudgy purple eye shadow pencil, mascara, bronzer and a bit of blush. I know what colours and textures work for me and can do my routine with my eyes closed. Some mornings, they actually are!’ What products do you always carry? ‘Nars Stick Concealer (£19) for redness

I often pop a sheet mask on when I’m watching Homeland, but only when the kids have gone to bed as those masks scare the bejesus out of them!’ Which products are mama essentials? ‘For me a good concealer is essential, and I often use it in place of foundation if I don’t want to put on a full face. Nars makes the best and I alternate between Radiant Creamy Concealer (£23) and the new Soft Matte Complete Concealer (£23) for more velvety coverage. I often pile on an overnight mask before bed. Erborian Sleeping BB Mask (£36) helps me wake up looking fresher.’
