We launched The Scout Guide Charlottesville in 2010, following a recession, and at a time when it felt like big-box stores were poised to swallow up the small businesses in our community. A decade later, facing a crisis that has hit small businesses harder than any other we’ve weathered, we are more dedicated than ever to supporting Charlottesville’s small-business community—and to celebrating it as well. In these pages you will meet the people, and their businesses, who help make up the unique fiber of our city. Some have been with us for many years; others are just joining us. Behind these businesses are passionate individuals who put it all on the line every day for the dream they’ve turned into reality. If we’ve learned one thing during our 10 years of work with Charlottesville’s independent business owners, it’s that they’re creative, resilient, and full of moxie. We recognize that this group of entrepreneurs is but a small fraction of Charlottesville’s small-business owners. Whether they grace our pages or not, we are continually inspired by all the go-getters in our town—their bravery, tenacity, and passion are what keep us going, and what make our town so special—and we will continue to seek them out, tell their stories, and develop a deeper connection with all aspects of our community. WHAT ARE THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOU? Passionate, hardworking, and considerate. WHAT ARE THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE BRS? Inspiring, driven, and dedicated. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A BOARDING SCHOOL? It’s a good environment. I was looking for a place where I would be inclined to do the things I need to do because the people around me are doing them also. WHAT KIND OF CAREER DO YOU WANT? I don’t know exactly, but I would like to be doing good for my community and the people around me. This is a value that Blue Ridge has instilled in me. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR FAVORITE CLASSES AT BRS? They’re all great, but the class that I enjoy most would be Mr. Niederberger’s history class. He brings a certain intellect to class that encourages me to form thought-out and relevant opinions in my writing. Even though he assigns more work than any other class, I really do enjoy listening to him teach. WHAT ATHLETICS HAVE YOU PLAYED AT BRS? Varsity soccer, varsity lacrosse, and indoor soccer. I also had the opportunity this year to be the kicker for the football team while also playing soccer in the fall. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BRS TRADITION? Jumping in the lake at graduation. It’s just one last send off for the seniors. I can only imagine that feeling of celebrating with your brothers after all the blood, sweat, and tears we’ve had together. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BRS? How close-knit our community is. Everyone knows everyone. I’ve made more lifelong friends, including teachers and coaches, than I could’ve ever predicted. There really isn’t anything like it.
