Meet the Trio Behind Hidden Gem
True to its name, Hidden Gem is a place of discovery filled with unique handcrafted décor, textiles, art, and accessories. Curated with an island aesthetic that combines the owners’ Antiguan heritage with their East End roots, it is a reflection of the powerhouses behind the boutique, and their creativity infuses every corner of the shop. An alumna of Hayground School, Temidra Willock went on to graduate from college with a degree in fashion, then founded the textile company Vivid Blueprint. Her lifelong aspiration to open a local shop was realized with Hidden Gem, which now stocks Vivid Blueprint’s beautifully woven products. In 2013, Temidra met her husband, local musician Ken Morsch, a multi-instrumentalist who studied Jazz Composition at LIU CW Post and now performs with the local band All Soul’d Out. Ken helped direct the renovation of the building where Hidden Gem is located, and his love of art is apparent throughout the boutique. The third talent behind Hidden Gem, Tanya Willock, also went to Hayground School, and graduated college as a photography major. Her photographs and digital art have become integral to the shop aesthetic, through screen printing and framed artwork that is available for purchase. From the moment you enter the boutique, you recognize the authenticity of the owners’ creative vision and the care that has gone into procuring every item. See for yourself—and get to know Temidra, Ken, and Tanya in person—the next time you’re seeking an item to add interest to your home or simply wish to be inspired.

A Restoration of American History
A TIMELINE OF ONE OF THE OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY OCCUPIED STRUCTURES IN THE UNITED STATES
1648
Baker House 1650 is built by sea captain Daniel Howe on property coveted for its proximity to the water and the developing village.
1650
The property is sold to Thomas Baker, one of the founding fathers of East Hampton village, who becomes its namesake. The sprawling structure becomes an integral part of the community, serving as the church, tavern, inn, and town hall.
1911
The iconic style of the building is established when renowned architect Joseph Greenleaf Thorp begins his grand renovation of Baker House, transforming it into the classic English Cotswold manor style.
2004
Antonella Bertello acquires Baker House 1650 and
undertakes
a
painstaking
renovation,
restoring the property to, and beyond, Thorp’s original vision. In addition to introducing state-ofthe-art technology and luxurious amenities, she installs gardens, terraces, an infinity edge pool, and renovates the full-service spa, complete with indoor pool.
2008
Bertello acquires the Baker Carriage House and begins another historical renovation, establishing two magnificent guest suites.
2020
Known as one of the most exclusive bed and breakfasts in the Hamptons, Baker House 1650 is lauded for its second-to-none service and for a restoration that has become a gift not only to local residents and historians, but to American history itself.

How to Throw the Ultimate Garden Party
French country gardens meet high-end entertaining at East Hampton Gardens, Michael Giannelli’s treasure trove of hostess gifts, tabletop items, and beautiful pieces for outdoor living. Here, Giannelli—a master at creating elegant environments both inside and out—shares how to throw the ultimate Hamptons garden party, from where to seek inspiration to how to create the ideal lighting scheme. LET YOUR GARDEN GUIDE YOU A garden party is a celebration of your gardens, so they should be the starting point in terms of your event planning. First, get your landscape in perfect shape—this could require last-minute primping, or a year of planning and planting. Then, draw your inspiration from your garden style and what’s in season. Serve food that feels like it was just harvested, garnish your dishes with edible flowers, and serve drinks brimming with beautiful herbs. INCORPORATE—AND EMULATE—NATURAL ELEMENTS Again, let the natural setting influence your décor. If your flower beds and pots are in full bloom and color abounds, consider picking a hue or two from your surroundings to use as accents throughout your tablescapes. If your gardens happen to be primarily green and white, or if you’re looking to introduce a festive feel, you might want to bring vintage silver pieces or subtle floral patterns into the mix. TAKE A LESS-IS-MORE APPROACH TO LIGHTING The last thing you want is flood lights or bright sconces blinding your guests, so consider lighting carefully. Hurricanes aglow with candles and strung market lights are ideal for any garden party. Cluster and string them wherever guests will gather, and avoid the high-wattage bulbs after the sun goes down.

5Questions with Shannon Willey OF SEA GREEN DESIGNS
Shannon Willey has been designing beach house interiors in the Hamptons for 20 years, catering to busy professionals who want a quintessential Hamptons-style home, but lack the time to piece it together. Her home store, Sea Green Designs, is filled with wonderful coastal finds in various styles, making it the perfect source for anyone who aspires to have a chic, beach-inspired abode. We sat down with Shannon to learn more about her style, passion, and dedication to sustainability. What defines coastal style? People often think of a beach house as a place for summers only, and equate coastal style with “beachy” elements, such as seashells or nautical décor. However, coastal style has evolved to include all architectural styles, whether they are modern or traditional. Through the subtle (or not so subtle) use of color, texture, and form, you can incorporate a nod to your coastal surroundings. Coastal style is really about bringing the feeling of living on the water into your interiors and adapting it to your style. What will we find at Sea Green Designs? I’m constantly curating, and while I lean toward the elements that define a coastal home, I’m also looking for sustainable objects—items made with ecologically conscious materials, by artisans who use sustainable manufacturing processes. It’s not always apparent when you step into the shop, but when you look closely and ask us questions, you’ll learn about the intent of all these beautiful objects we’ve found.
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF CREATING COASTAL RETREATS FOR FAMILIES TO ENJOY
Why is sustainability so important to you? We’re fighting for the integrity of our coastlines, our oceans are dumping grounds for garbage, beaches are eroding, sea life is dying, and it’s our responsibility to make all the small changes that end up having a huge impact. What are some of the sustainable practices you try to follow? There are many sustainable practices I try to follow when it comes to your home. Three easy things anyone can do are buying locally made products; using furnishings and accessories made of reclaimed or renewable materials; and reusing/repurposing existing pieces. We often reupholster or refinish pieces on projects. Where do you find your inspiration? Where else? The beach! I try to walk the local beaches every day. I walk in the cold and the rain, by myself or with my husband, even if I’m tired or busy or I just don’t feel like it. Once I get down there, I feel at home. It invigorates me, the saltwater is healing, and I get endless inspiration for my work. They say you’re best at what you know, right? This is what I know, this is what I do.

3 Recommendations from a Local Landscape Expert
While there are certainly many factors that go into achieving a beautiful landscape, perhaps the most critical is understanding that planning is everything. Matthew Stengel, owner of Hampton Rustic Landscapes, has built his business on creating personalized strategies and managing every aspect of projects, from design to installation to maintenance. Here, he shares three key recommendations for creating a customized outdoor space. SET A SOLID FOUNDATION Before you embark on a major project, make sure you address any underlying issues that would affect your success. Determine the soil condition, have the drainage evaluated, consider any fencing or privacy screening, and assess your irrigation needs. SAVE LARGE SPECIMEN TREES WITH RELOCATION While moving a mature specimen tree may seem daunting, it is doable, and adds value to your property—you just need to plan ahead, as there are short seasonal windows to this highly specialized process. Most importantly, make sure the company you hire has a high success rate with relocations. CREATE A LANDSCAPE THAT REFLECTS YOUR PERSONALITY Take the opportunity to design a space that’s an extension of who you are and meets the needs of your family. Whether that means installing a chef’s garden, making a safe space for children and pets, or adding a putting green, work with a proven expert to develop and build your vision.
