AMERICA’S FIRST
RESORT DESTINATION
BY RICK ROSE
For more information about Rick Rose & his book, Palm Beach: The Essential Guide to America’s Legendary Resort Town , go to rickrosepalmbeach.com
Palm Beach lays claim to the title “America’s First Resort Destination” as the first purpose-built, selfcontained and fully inclusive resort destination in the United States, predating its own incorporation into a town later in the early 1900s. During the peak of the American Gilded Age, Elisha Newton "Cap" Dimick, built the Cocoanut Grove House structure on the East bank of Lake Worth in 1876 as a private residence. He later expanded and converted it into an inn, which opened in 1880 as the first public lodging establishment in the region. It was during this era that the first affluent northerners arrived, mainly as adventurers and big game hunters. Florida Panthers, alligators, crocodiles and wild boar were the most popular trophies. Two years later Dimick sold the hotel to Commodore Charles J. Clark, who then founded the Palm Beach Yacht Club, which today is the oldest
operating club in South Florida, currently located in West Palm Beach.
Although Cocoanut Grove House prospered and pioneer families began settling along the banks of the lake in the 1880s, the area didn’t really take off as a winter haven for northerners until the industrial magnate Henry Morrison Flagler, cofounder of Standard Oil, discovered the Lake Worth region in the early 1890s. Flagler, purportedly enchanted by the tropical vegetation and thousands of coconut palms along the banks of the lagoon, was searching for a location to build a hotel where Northerners could escape freezing temperatures. The sensitive tropical vegetation was a good indication that the area rarely, if ever, had frost. Ironically, coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) are not indigenous to Florida. They were
brought here when the cargo ship Providencia ran aground off the shores of current-day Palm Beach in 1878 and the crew and cargo of 20,000 coconuts were rescued by local pioneer families. The locals kept the valuable coconuts and created one of Florida’s first coconut groves along the banks of the Lake Worth Lagoon.
The settlement became known as Palm Beach, and it was the perfect location to fulfill Flagler’s vision to build one of America’s grandest Gilded Age hotels, the Hotel Royal Poinciana, which opened in 1894. Enlarged twice and doubled in size each time, it became the largest wooden structure in the world (as reported by multiple historians) with 1,700 employees and accommodations for 2,000 guests. More than just another elegant seaside hotel like those at older Victorian era coastal towns on the Eastern Seaboard, the massive Hotel Royal Poinciana resort offered golf (which is now the oldest golf course in Florida), tennis, sailing regattas, hunting, concerts, dancing, fine dining, cycling and bicycle rickshaw excursions to Jungle Trail, along the Lake Trail and to the “beach.” In sailors’ jargon, “on the beach” once connoted poverty and helplessness; being stranded or left behind. But by the late 1800s, beaches conveyed health, pleasure and a sought-after “escape” from the city and the drudgery of modern life. Flagler’s completion of the Florida East Coast Railway to West Palm Beach in 1894 helped transform Palm Beach to become the preeminent winter destination for the wealthy elite, the only socioeconomic class able to afford to travel for leisure during the Gilded Age.
As the growing affluent class of professionals and successful merchants began to travel in the early 20th century, summer destinations such as Newport, Rhode Island; the Hamptons, New York; the Berkshires in Massachusetts and several others also became
popular. However, in the winter, Palm Beach remained the primary, most important destination in the continental United States for the next quarter century, resulting in a remarkable concentration of wealth and power on the 11-mile-long island during “the Season”— between Christmas and Easter.
To meet the growing demand, Flagler built a second hotel in 1896, which would eventually become the famous Breakers Hotel. Still mainly a resort in the early 1900s, as the hotel expanded in capacity, the community prospered and incorporated into a town in 1911. The incorporation of the town also was prompted by, at least in part, the desire to prevent the nearby City of West Palm Beach from incorporating the island of Palm Beach into its city limits. Palm Beachers wanted the right to govern themselves.
On the other side of the Atlantic, the French and Italian Rivieras became popular winter and spring destinations for European royalty and wealthy U.S. industrialists after the train was completed to Monte Carlo in the mid-1800s. Heightened political tensions in Europe, leading up to and during World War I, affected the travel habits of wealthy Americans, many of whom had vacationed in or built residences on the European Riviera. With that region less accessible, Americans began to look to Palm Beach as an alternative. The destination was developing into an American Riviera, laying the groundwork for the next exciting chapter during the “roaring 20s” with the arrival of two other visionaries, Paris Singer and Addison Mizner. Although other winter destinations have since emerged, Palm Beach remains indisputably the preeminent exclusive winter resort destination for America’s “moneyed aristocracy.” Palm Beach’s 33480 zip code often tops the list of America’s wealthiest zip codes in terms of average income and household net worth, part of the legacy of Henry Morrison Flagler.

WORTH AVENUE & THE CLOCK TOWER
Hailed as one of the most exclusive boutique shopping districts in the world, Worth Avenue epitomizes Palm Beach style and is historically signifi cant mainly for two reasons: Addison Mizner built the Everglades Club here and created the eclectic Mediterranean Revival architectural style that became all the rage across Florida during the 1920s. Worth Avenue has been (and still is) the launch pad for many famous luxury brands. Be sure to explore the vias and don’t miss the Clock Tower at the east end of Worth Avenue. Serving as a monument to the Palm Beach Pier that stretched into the Atlantic from 1926 to 1969.

Landmarked by the Town of Palm Beach in 2020, The Colony Hotel was designed by the architectural firm of Simonson & Holley and erected in 1946-47 during the towns second building boom. The iconic British Colonial style “Pink Paradise” has hosted many famous dignitaries over the last 75 years, such as the Duke and Dutchess of Windsor who resided in one of the penthouse suites for multiple seasons. Under the leadership of owners Sarah and Andrew Wetenhall, the hotel has undergone an extensive refurbishment in recent years, bringing in a fresh new look (and clientele), while respecting the hotels landmark status. The newly re-done lobby, now called the Living Room, features a fantastical de Gournay mural that spans the entire lobby which was inspired by a postcard that illustrated the original mural from 1947.

HENRY MORRISON FLAGLER MUSEUM: WHITEHALL
Designed by acclaimed École des BeauxArts trained architects John Carrère and Thomas Hastings and completed in 1902, this Palm Beach landmark was proclaimed by the New York Herald to be “more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and
more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world.” These architects also collaborated on the design of many other Gilded Age landmarks, including the New York Public Library and Fifth Avenue mansion of Henry Clay Frick (now the Frick Collection art museum.) The immensely wealthy Henry Flagler cofounder of Standard Oil, built the 75-room, 100,000 sq. ft. Gilded Age mansion as a wedding present for his wife, Mary Lily Kenan Flagler. The once private residence is now a non-profit museum open to the public o ering programming, lectures, and many sought after Palm Beach events.

THE LAKE TRAIL
In the 1890s, the Lake Trail was the main transportation artery on the island. Today, no visit to Palm Beach is complete without a walk or bike (or rollerblade like our editor prefers) ride along the gorgeous multipurpose path that winds along-side and through some of the most notable landmarks on the island. The longest section of the lake trail extends from Royal Poinciana Way to almost the northern tip of the island. The shorter, but more historic section is between Royal Poinciana Way and Royal Palm Way. Bikes can be rented at Palm Beach Bicycle Trail Shop (50 Cocoanut Row) The sta o ers helpful tips and usually can supply a basic map.
THE BREAKERS PALM BEACH
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Breakers Palm Beach opened on January 16, 1896, as the Palm Beach Inn, occupying the beachfront grounds of the Hotel Royal Poinciana, which had opened two years earlier. Guests began requesting rooms “down by the breakers” (referring to the waves at the beach), so founder Henry Morission Flagler eventually renamed it The Breakers. Rooms started at $4 per night and included three meals a day. The guest register reads like a who’s who of early 20th century America: Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Astors, Andrew Carnegie and J. P. Morgan vacationed alongside US presidents and European nobility. Today,

The Breakers has prevailed as one of just over 1,000 family-owned businesses in the US that is over 100 years old and still under its original ownership. The resort has also been recognized as one of the longest, continuously operating businesses in the state of Florida.

NORTON MUSEUM OF ART
One of the largest fine art museums in the Southeastern United States, the Norton Museum of Art is a cultural mainstay in Palm Beach County. The museum was founded in 1941 by industrialist Ralph Hubbard Norton, who commissioned architect Marion Sims Wyeth to design and build the Art Deco/ Neo Classical original structure. In 2019 the museum completed a major expansion, led by internationally acclaimed Lord Norman Foster. The $100 million project included a new 59,000 sq ft wing and entrance on S. Dixie Highway. Under the leadership of Ghislain d’Humiéres, the museums collection has expanded to over 7,600 works with a concentration in European, American, and Chinese art, as well as contemporary art and photography.
