Governor John W. Martin signed acts creating the counties of Indian River and Martin on the very same day, May 30, 1925. The road to the governor’s desk had not been easy. Influential political interests around the state tried their best to stop both counties from upsetting the balance of power in the Florida Legislature. So, the siblings had to learn to work together in order for each to get their way.
Behind the scenes, a well-respected lobbyist came up with the winning strategy. He suggested that the people of Stuart name their county a er the brand new governor. That got Governor Martin on board to support both counties as part of a deal, and legislators around the state quickly dropped all objections. In the following months, two more counties—Gulf and Gilchrist—were created to maintain the era’s balance of power. - Written by: Rick Crary
