DESIGNER SCOUT "SWEET FEMININE KNITS FOR YOUR CLOSET" Y

The Designer Label

beatrice holloway CHIC STYLE ALONG WITH COMFORTABLE KNIT, IT DOESN'T GET ANY SWEETER THAN WENDY WONG'S NEW LINE. Noticing a void in designer knitwear, she decided to fill her newest collection with affordable sweet and feminine knits that fit into any girl’s closet with ease. The line’s name was inspired by a fictional great grandmother fond of knitting on her porch – just one of the varying mediums Wong used for inspiration along with kittens and strawberry lemonade.

With the success of her edgy contemporary line Maison, Wong was eager to experiment with new designs and fabrics that would have something for everyone in terms of colors, fit and fabric. The endearing Beatrice Holloway line debuted in Spring 2008 with eager buyers in Japan, Canada and the United States.

What type of music do you listen to while you work? I like to start my mornings off slow, with something more jazzy, and speed up the

pace as the day goes. I definitely need something higher energy for that 3-4pm tired time. That’s when I blast Yelle or Lady Gaga

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? My impatience! Hurry up!

When are you happiest? Travelling! My job allows me to travel the

world and I’m always finding inspiration everywhere! It’s thrilling to

see what people are wearing on the other side of the world, the colors,

fabrics, textures, architecture, retail shops etc. I love experiencing new cultures, foods, languages and meeting new people.

Did you go away on vacation? If so where? Highlight from the trip? After my work part in Hong Kong, I flew to Phuket, Thailand and Bali,

Indonesia. Both were so beautiful, tropical and inspiring, I couldn’t stop thinking resort collections!

Fashion mistake you will never live down? My one and only perm. I was so obsessed with trying to give my stick straight hair some

body, that I gave my chin length hair a perm. And not a wavy one, a

tight curly one that ended up as a small afro. Paired with my lavender

rimmed glasses and shoulder pads (it was the 80’s!), it was truly a low point in my fashion career.

How has your style changed over the past 10 years? I’ve always

loved colour and pattern but as I’ve gotten older it’s gone from crazy

vintage mix and match to a little more subtle (like 1 print at a time as opposed to a few!)

Business Goals for 2011? Expansion into Asia.

second year, Jeanine was ready to go beyond writing about design and started to create designs of her own. In partnership with her husband, Bryan Mason, an academic pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of California Berkeley, the two began to develop a business that would specialize in small but impactful pieces. The

journey

from law to design has been an

interesting one. Since the company’s launch in 2009, AphroChic pieces have been featured in Lucky Magazine, Nesting Newbies, Chesapeake Home, California Home + Design and various interior design blogs. The pillow collection made it onto the 2010 California Home + Design Hit List, celebrating the best in California design. Jeanine also has a weekly feature on color and textiles on HGTV’s interior design blog, Design Happens, and participated as an online guest judge for the 2010 season of HGTV’s Design Star.

WHAT WE BELIEVE AphroChic was created in 2009 as an embodiment of its mantra of modern soulful style. Jeanine Hays, the company’s founder and creative director, bases her work on the belief that a synthesis of high-end design and ethnic culture can create a style that is reflective of the individual while still being of the highest quality and the latest fashion. It is this belief, coupled with an unending dedication to environmental consciousness and sustainable design that gives AphroChic its unique blend of modern soulful style. Y

NOSTALGIA organic soaps & toiletries Doing their part to make people happy and healthy, Y one organic wildcrafted botanical at a time. Nostalgia Life

The simple, natural pleasures. Taking time to laugh with our children, nurture friendships and watch a butterfly’s erratic flight. Enjoy a warm cup of honey tea and give thanks to all the beautiful things around us.

Nostalgia Philosophy

Our philosophy is simple. We want to do our part to make people happy and healthy and to make the earth a better place. So we do it through nurturing, artisan beauty.

Nostalgia Promise

Nostalgia was founded on a commitment – to ourselves, our families, the Earth and you. We are committed to: Creating natural personal care products using select ingredients from around the world. Supporting trade sources that share our values. We believe in fair trade working conditions, earth-friendly recycling practices, and selecting raw ingredients from sources that offer sustainable, organic materials. We make every attempt to source our supplies from those that share our beliefs. Giving back. t all begins with a single feather. I take a plume – they can be small and delicate or large and lush – and create accessories around my main inspiration for Noémiah label. I use textures, colours and varying lengths to explore asymmetry and ultimately create a modern and original piece of jewellery that has an irresistible, tactile quality. All of the items are handmade to order and may vary slightly from the jewels pictured. www.noemiah.com photographer: Véronique Gohier stylist: Myriam Girouard hair & make up: Marie-Eve Dompierre model: Ariel from Ema Models

Created by the 27 year old NoĂŠmie, jewels are designed by hand using feathers, metal findings and chains. NoĂŠmiah is currently being sold in 12 boutiques across the Canada and her work was featured in many

magazines (see http://noemiah.com to take a look)! I

or this table I wanted to create a rustic dinner party vibe, taking inspiration from a local farmer’s market. I’ve always loved growing my own herbs for cooking and wanted the table to reflect that philosophy. This concept is perfect for a rehearsal dinner, anniversary party or a charming twist on the sweetheart table at a rustic, chic wedding! I created a simple menu using local and fresh ingredients. I prepared a spinach ravioli with a sage butter sauce. I originally tried this dish on my anniversary trip and have wanted to re-create it ever since, using sage from my garden {recipe here.} Also on the menu, rustic farm bread with rosemary butter and for dessert, vanillalavender cupcakes and fresh mint tea!

Gallery wall of empty vintage frames

I placed my table next to a gallery wall of empty vintage frames. I kept the setting simple, using a piece of rustic wood as a placemat, delicate vintage pinkhued napkins and of course, vintage silverware! Regular glass tumblers were used for wine, to create a casual, understated feel. A barnwood tray is a simple, yet charming centerpiece and it holds champagne & glasses for an after-dinner toast! www.dandelionandgreyblog.com

DESIGNER SCOUT

jasmin sparrow

Jasmin started creating pieces with feathers during summer 2008. She never imagined that wearing feathers through her hair would turn into a label, but attracting such a huge response from the public lead to just that, and Jasmin Sparrow begun.

Feather braids lead to feather jewellery, which she started selling in selected boutiques throughout Wellington where Jasmin was based. The handcrafted feather pieces grew from jewellery to headpieces, clips, collars, and eventually one-off garments.

Being surrounded by so many creatively talented and influential friends in Wellington, who were always keen to collaborate in artistic projects, has played a huge part in Jasmin Sparrow evolving into what it is today. Now Jasmin is based in her hometown of Waihi Beach where she plays with feathers everyday, ensuring the business continues to grow and beautiful people across the globe can enjoy her creations.
