The new works presented tonight are a result of the collaborative course MUS 370/ DAN 385 taught by Emory Arts Visiting Fellows THEODOSIA ROUSSOS (music) and ANNALEE TRAYLOR (dance), exploring the collaborative possibilities between music/ sound creators and dance creators. Their students have collaborated this semester to create original works for the singers of StageWorks on the topic of identity, in collaboration with DR. PATRICIA DINKINS-MATTHEWS and DR. BETHANY MAMOLA .

ANUSHKA BASU , soprano, is a sophomore at Emory University from the San Francisco Bay Area. She is pursuing a double major in Vocal Performance and Quantitative Social Science: Data Science. Anushka has been studying classical singing for eight years and is currently a student of Dr. Bethany Mamola at Emory. Before joining Emory, she attended the Washington National Opera Institute, the Metropolitan Opera Guild High School Opera Singers Intensive, and SongFest at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Anushka has also played the piano for fifteen years and has taken part in Emory ensembles such as collaborative piano and University Chorus. This summer, Anushka will perform her first lead role as Bastienne in Mozart’s opera Bastien und Bastienne in Salzburg, Austria.
LUCY BRIGHT (ADELMAN) is an Atlanta Native artist. In the Fall of 2020, Lucy arrived at Emory University as a Vocal Performance Major and has since performed around the campus and city at Eddie’s Attic, Lost Dog Tavern, the Schwartz Center and more. Her passion for creating sound brought her into the recording studio, where internship turned full time recording artist. Throughout her time at Emory, Lucy performed with her band “Groove”, Aural Pleasure a Capella, Emory UChorus, and The Emory Alumni Association. She served as the Emory Musicians Network Events Coordinator, Ad Hoc Theater Group Vocal Coach, and Emory Composers Society Executive Board. The singer/songwriter is taking her training and determination to New York City in the fall where she will be pursuing a career in music. She’d like to thank all her family, friends, and teachers for their support! Enjoy the show!
EZRA GREIDINGE is a senior double majoring in psychology and music composition. He was drawn to music at a young age and enjoyed getting to perform in various musicals and plays. He has continued to pursue this interest at Emory through his involvement in student theater and the University Chorus. As well as performing, Ezra has had the opportunity to premiere several original compositions with the music department. When he isn’t composing or performing, Ezra enjoys playing basketball, practicing guitar, and spending time with friends. He is grateful for all the support and guidance he has received at Emory.
KARYN LISKER , 22, from St. Louis, Missouri, is a senior at Emory University and will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music (Vocal Performance) and Psychology. Karyn studies voice under Dr. Bethany Mamola and collaborative pianist, Dr. Hanna Song. She is a former student of Bradley Howard and Erika Tazawa. Karyn has performed in Emory Choir’s Concert Choir under Dr. Eric Nelson’s direction for four years as Alto 2 and serves as Co-Director of Public Relations. Karyn’s vocal studies have generously been supported by Emory’s Friends of Music, the 2018 Music Scholarship, and the Atlanta Symphony Chorus Robert Shaw Memorial Outstanding Singer Scholarship. This year is Karyn’s ninth of studying voice – growing up, she played piano and danced for fifteen years, musicals were a highlight of her high school years, and trained with Opera Theater St. Louis’s Artists-in-Training program for two years. Outside of music at Emory, Karyn is involved in research within the ACCESS Lab at the Marcus Autism Center, and has or currently serves in leadership roles in Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women, Emory Hillel, Hillels of Georgia, Office of Spiritual and Religious Life, and the Student Well-being Advisory Committee.
AVA SANDSTROM , mezzo, 19, is from Pittsburgh, PA, is a freshman unsure of her major but considering interdisciplinary studies, vocal performance, linguistics, women’s studies, and international studies, to name a few. In past years, from school shows to professional prep courses, she has enjoyed playing Éponine in Les Misérables, Cinderella in Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Morticia in The Addams Family, and Belle in Beauty and the Beast, as well as many wonderful ensemble credits. Ava loves to participate in Emory Concert Choir as well. Ava has had the pleasure of studying solo voice, focusing on musical theater, jazz, and a bit of classical here and there, for nearly 6 years and sends so much love to her first voice teacher, Leigh Usilton. In 2016, Ava received the Rising Star Award in her school, and in 2023 she was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Gene Kelly Awards. She serves as Vice President of Talks Branch at Table Talk on campus and is excited to be learning Muay Thai at Muay Thai club. Ava is obsessed with her cat, Gypsy, and has been practicing and teaching martial arts for almost 13 years. All her love to Ryer Martial Arts Academy! Ava would like to thank Dr. Mamola, Dr. Matthews, and Dr. Brower for beginning this journey with her and her friends and family far and wide. Ava’s heart beats for those she loves.
RUBY STILLMAN is a senior from Minneapolis, MN majoring in Human Health and minoring in Spanish. She is involved in student theater at Emory, and has enjoyed performing as well as studying musical theater as a voice student for her entire Emory career. She is the first and only vocalist in Emory’s Jazz studies department, as well as the President of Emory’s student-run radio station, WMRE. She enjoys engaging in activism, thrifting, and spending time with her friends. She has found her experiences in the arts at Emory fruitful and fulfilling.
CATALINA VARELA , soprano, is a junior double majoring in Neuroscience (NBB) and Vocal Performance in the pre-med track. Catalina has studied solo voice for 2.5 years but has been involved in vocal ensembles since seventh grade. Currently, she enjoys being a member of Emory’s University Chorus. She also loves to read, dance salsa, and fly gliders. She would like to thank Bethany Mamola, Daniel Lickteig, and Patricia Dinkins-Matthews for their support of Emory’s music department and StageWorks. Finally, she hopes you enjoy the show!!
DR. BETHANY GRACE MAMOLA , soprano, has charmed audiences with her stage presence and warm vocal timbre. The Cleveland Plain Dealer praised her with “...the most beautiful singing, whose Carolina was as disarming in characterization as it was expressive in vocal shading.” Arts Atlanta wrote that Bethany “was that rare talent who commands not only the virtuosity of a seasoned operatic vocalist but also the stage presence and acting prowess necessary to truly embody the character she presents”.
Bethany has been a featured soloist with the National Repertory Orchestra Festival in Colorado, the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra, the Sausalito Song Society, The McKinney Philharmonic, The River Cities Symphony Orchestra and was the featured soprano soloist with the UTRGV Symphony Chorus in their 2019 performances of The Messiah. Her recent stage credits include Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Drusilla in L’incornazione di Poppea and Zerlina in Don Giovanni.
She holds a DMA in voice from the University of North Texas, a Masters of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a Bachelors of Music from the University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music and is the Director of Vocal Studies at Emory University.
DR. PATRICIA DINKINS-MATTHEWS joined the faculty of Emory University in 1998, where she is an Associate Teaching Professor in piano, vocal coaching, piano skills, and collaborative piano. She has been a member of the piano faculties at the University of Florida, Baylor University, the American Institute of Music Studies (Graz, Austria), and McLennan College.
Dinkins-Matthews has an undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and both a Master of Music degree in piano performance and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano pedagogy and performance from the University of Colorado. Dinkins-Matthews is an active solo and chamber music recitalist and has performed both in the United States and in Europe, including recitals in England, France, Austria, Belgium, and Germany. Among others, Dinkins-Matthews has been the pianist for the Florida Arts Trio and the American Chamber Winds (ACW), and she has appeared as soloist with the ACW, the Colorado Symphony, the University of Tennessee Orchestra, and the Florida Symphony Orchestra. Dinkins-Matthews is the pianist for the Aevia Trio and is the associate pianist for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus. She is an approved adjudicator for the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Music Teachers National Association.
DR. DANIEL LICKTEIG, having graced the stages of prestigious American opera houses, continues to leave audiences spellbound with his soaring baritone voice’s sheer power and beauty. Dr. Lickteig is excited to join Emory University as a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in Vocal Studies. Throughout his career, he has worked with great conductors such as Valéry Ryvkin, Laurie Rogers, Timothy Myers, and Robert Larsen.
Originally from Iowa, Dr. Lickteig’s professional debut was singing comprimario roles in Des Moines Metro Opera’s broadcast of The Ballad of Baby Doe for Iowa PBS. He has covered and sung leading roles with many opera companies, including Opera Philadelphia, Sarasota Opera, Cleveland Opera, and Utah Festival Opera, among others. Highlights of his extensive operatic repertoire include Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Rossini’s Figaro, Verdi’s Rigoletto, Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca , and Marcello in La Bohème.
Dr. Lickteig has performed recitals in various cities, including Philadelphia, where he had the honor of performing and recording songs by Charles Ives and the world premiere of Jeremy Gill’s Dreamland with the Dolce Suono Ensemble. Equally comfortable on the concert stage, he has performed as a soloist in iconic works such as Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Bach’s Magnificat, Brahm’s Requiem , and Orff’s Carmina Burana , which he performed at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music.
Dr. Lickteig has been teaching voice throughout his performing career. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Temple University in Philadelphia. He recently completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of North Texas.
Emory’s Vocal Studies area includes approximately 25 Music majors among many other students who are either voice minors or voice non-majors studying for credit or studying privately. With five voice teachers in the program, students have ample opportunity to explore the craft of singing, working on technique and artistry as it relates to them individually. There are many performance opportunities on campus as well, including StageWorks, master classes with world renowned teachers, art song symposia, solo recitals, and voice classes. The vocal program at Emory is for the student who is moving toward a career in music, or one who simply wishes to sing.
