Sydney Chung, piano Sydney Chung is a senior in Emory’s College of Arts and Sciences majoring in piano performance and biology on the pre-dental track. She began her piano studies in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, at age five, where she studied with Elizabeth Madden and Loretta Hake. During her high school years, she competed and placed in the Florida State Music Teachers Association District 1 Concerto Competition and the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, among others. She remained an active participant in National Guild Auditions, receiving superior plus ratings for 12 years in a row. Chung began her Emory career at Oxford College where she studied with Kristi Helfen. At Oxford, she competed and placed in the Georgia Music Teachers Association State Auditions in 2018 and 2019, and received the Florida Dean Award for musical scholarship in 2019. Since transitioning to Emory’s Atlanta campus, Chung has been studying piano with music faculty member Patricia Dinkins-Matthews. In the past two years, she has presented her junior piano recital, performed in several piano master classes, performed in the Emory Piano Virtual Concert for Emory DRIVE, and was selected as a finalist to present an exhibition at the spring 2020 Emory Virtual Research Symposium and the 2021 Music Teachers National Association Virtual Collegiate Chapters Symposium on Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 3. In addition to her love for piano performance, Chung has a strong commitment to service. She has organized and performed various concerts for nursing home residents since she was in middle school. As a part of a family tradition, she performs in a recital for nursing home residents every summer in San Antonio, Texas, with her extended family. Outside of piano studies, Chung spends her time volunteering at the free Ben Massell Dental Clinic in Midtown Atlanta, leading various pre-health organizations on campus, and training for marathons.

Music at Emory

The Department of Music at Emory University provides an exciting and innovative environment for developing knowledge and skills as a performer, composer, and scholar. Led by a faculty of more than 60 nationally and internationally recognized artists and researchers, undergraduate and graduate students experience a rich diversity of performance and academic opportunities. Undergraduate students in the department earn a BA in music with a specialization in performance, composition, or research, many of whom simultaneously earn a second degree in another department. True to the spirit of Emory, a liberal arts college in the heart of a research university, the faculty and ensembles also welcome the participation of nonmajor students from across the Emory campus.
