English translation by Richard Stokes

Es glänzt der Mond nieder, The moon shines down, ich sollte doch wieder so I should set out zu meinem Liebchen, again to my love, wie mag es ihr gehn? how is she, I wonder?

Ach weh, sie verzaget Alas, she’s despairing und klaget, und klaget, and lamenting, lamenting daß sie mich nimmer she’ll never see im leben wird sehn! me again in her life!

Es ging der Mond unter, The moon went down, ich eilte doch munter, but I hurried off happily, und eilte daß keiner hurried so that no one mein Liebchen entführt. should steal my love.

Ihr Täubchen, o girret, Keep cooing, you doves, ihr Lüftchen, o schwirret, keep whispering, you breezes, daß keiner mein Liebchen, so that no one mein Liebchen entführt! should steal my love!

DAWN

Music: Eric William Barnum (b. 1979)

Text: Robert Bode (b. 1959)

© 2011 G. Schirmer, Inc.

From the door’s soft opening And the day’s first sigh, Filling the room, I see before me

A life of doors, One opening on another, Doors upon doors, And sighs upon sighs, Rising in a tide of mornings, Rising, until that final sigh, And the last morning, And the last holy breath, Whispering “this…”

DOWN IN THE RIVER TO PRAY

Music/Text: Traditional Folk Song, Arr. Eric Nelson (b. 1959)

© 2023 Birnamwood Publications (ASCAP), a division of MorningStar Music Publishers, Inc.

CHORUS

As I went down in the river to pray, studying about that good old way, and who shall wear the starry crown, good Lord, show me the way.

O sisters let’s go down, let’s go down, come on down. O sisters let’s go down, down in the river to pray.

CHORUS

O brothers let’s go down, let’s go down, come on down. O sisters let’s go down, down in the river to pray.

Deep river, my home is over Jordan, Deep river Lord, cross over to campground.

O don’t you want to go to that gospel feast, that promised land where all is peace?

O deep river Lord, I want to cross over into campground.

CHORUS

I

AIN’T

GOT LONG TO BE HERE

Music/Text: Mervyn E. Warren (b. 1964)

© 1985 Mervyn Warren

CHORUS

I ain’t got long to be here, I’m bound for the promised land. I ain’t got long to be here, got my ticket in my hand. And when I look around and see the troubles of the day, I don’t take time to pay no mind cause I ain’t got long to stay.

My mama said before she gone, “Child listen what I say. The savior he be coming soon and take us all away. He coming in the sky and I confess I don’t know how. But though I don’t, I know it won’t be too much longer now.”

CHORUS

My papa said before he gone, “I’ll see the Lord someday. The devil done try to stop me, but I’m going anyway.” And he’s bound to go because as he wiped the sweat from off his brow, His other hand I understand was on the gospel plow.

CHORUS

WIDE OPEN SPACES

Music/Text: Sarah Quartel (b. 1982)

© 2014 Oxford University Press

There’s part of my story, there’s part of my song. There’s part of my journey, that’s yet to be found.

With life all around us, there’s so much to see. Adventure is calling, it’s calling to me.

Out in the wide open spaces around me.

With big sky above me, I’m on my way. Scanning the horizon of a brand new day.

Feet to the earth now, there’s no turning back. Into the world now, look at me, look at me go!

Out in the wide open spaces around me.

But as I journey out, I look within and see, the spaces inside of me, yet to be filled. Filled with what I have seen and what I will be.

I’m filling the wide open spaces inside of me, with something I love, something I would like to be. Filling the wide open spaces within me.

O WHISTLE AND I'LL COME TO YE from THREE SCOTTISH FOLKSONGS

Folksong from The Oxford Scottish Song Book, arr. Mack Wilberg (b. 1955)

Text: Robert Burns (1759–1796)

© 1983 Hinshaw Music

O whistle and I’ll come to ye my lad! My father and mother and all should go mad, O whistle and I’ll come to ye my lad!

But take you great care when you come to court me, And come not unless the back gate be ajee. Then up the backstyle and let nobody see, And come as ye were not coming to me.

I’ll whistle and you’ll come to me my lass, Though your father and mother all should go mad, I’ll whistle and you’ll come to me my lass.

At kirk or at market when e’er you meet me, Go by me as though that ye cared not a flee, But steal me a blink of your bonnie black eye, Yet look as ye were not looking at me.

Ay vow and protest that ye care not for me, At times ye may laugh at my beauty a wee, But court not another though joking ye be, For fear that she wile your fancy frae me.

O whistle and I’ll come to ye my lad! My father and mother and all should go mad, O whistle and I’ll come to ye my lad!

WHEN THE EARTH STANDS STILL

Music/Text: Don Macdonald (b. 1966)

© 2016 Galaxy Music Corporation, Inc., a division of ECS Publishing

Come listen in the silence of the moment before rain comes down. There’s a deep sigh in the quiet of the forest and the tall tree’s crown.

CHORUS: Now hold me. Will you take the time to hold me and embrace the chill? Or miss me, will you take the time to miss me when the earth stands still? Cause there’s no use running cause the storm’s still coming and you’ve been running for too many years.

Come listen in the silence of the moment before shadows fall. Feel the tremor of your heartbeat matching heartbeat as we both dissolve.

CHORUS

So stay with me, held in my arms. Like branches of a tree, they’ll shelter you for many years.

ENTREAT ME NOT TO LEAVE YOU

Music: Dan Forrest (b. 1978)

Text: Adapted from Ruth 1:16-17

© 2012 Hinshaw Music, Inc. Chapel Hill NC

Entreat me not to leave you, nor to turn back from following after you.

For where you go, I will go And where you live, I will live Your people shall be my people And your God, my God. Where you die, I will die And there will I be buried.

The Lord do so to me, and more also, If ought but death parts you and me.

Entreat me not to leave you.

THE ROAD HOME

Tune: “Prospect” from Southern Harmony 1835, adapted by Stephen Paulus (1949–2014)

Text: Michael Dennis Browne (b. 1940)

© 2005 Stephen Paulus

Tell me where is the road I can call my own That I left, that I lost, so long ago? All these years I have wandered, oh, when will I know, There's a way, there's a road that will lead me home.

After wind, after rain when the dark is done, As I wake from a dream in the gold of day. Through the air there's a calling from far away. There's a voice I can hear, that will lead me home.

Rise up, follow me, come away is the call, With love in your heart as the only song; There is no such beauty as where you belong. Rise up, follow me, I will lead you home.

RISE, MY SOUL

Music: Traditional Folk Hymn, arr. Susan LaBarr (b. 1981)

Text: Robert Seagrave (1693-1759)

© 2018, 2023, Walton Music Corporation, a division of GIA Publications, Inc.

Rise, my soul, and take thy wings, Thy better portion trace, Rise from transitory things Toward heaven, thy native place. Sun and moon and stars decay,

Time shall soon this earth remove; Rise, my soul and haste away To seats prepared above.

Rivers to the ocean run, Nor stay in all their course; Fire ascending seeks the sun, Both speed them to their source. So my soul that’s born of God Longs to view his glorious face, Forward tends to his abode To rest in his embrace.

Fly me riches, fly me cares, Whilst I that coast explore; Flattering world, with all thy snares, Solicit me no more. Pilgrims fix not here their home; Strangers tarry but a night; When the last dear morn is come, They’ll rise to joyful light.

Cease, ye pilgrims cease to mourn, Press onward to the prize; Soon our Saviour will return Triumphant in the skies: Yet a season and you know Happy entrance will be given, All our sorrows left below,

I’LL BE ON MY WAY

Music/Text: Shawn Kirchner (b. 1970)

© 2011 Shawn Kirchner Publishing

When I am gone, don’t you cry for me, Don’t you pity my sorry soul. What pain there might have been will now be past And my spirit will be whole.

I’ll be on my way, I’ll be on my way I’ll have left my feet of clay upon the ground I will be glory bound, I’ll be on my way.

When I am gone, please forgive the wrongs that I might have done to you; There’ll be no room for regrets up there, high above, way beyond the blue.

I’ll be on my way, I’ll be on my way I’ll have laid down my frown and all my burdens down I’ll be putting on my crown, I’ll be on my way.

When I am gone, don’t you look for me in the places I have been. I’ll be alive, but somewhere else I’ll be on my way again!

I’ll be on my way, I’ll be on my way I will lift my wings and soar into the air, There’ll be glory everywhere, I’ll be on my way!

I’ll be on my way, I’ll be on my way I’ll have laid down my frown and all my burdens down I’ll be putting on my crown, I’ll be on my way. I’ll have left my feet of clay upon the ground

Atlanta Master Chorale proudly marks our 40th anniversary this season, continuing our legacy of crafting one of America's finest choral sounds and bringing singers and audiences to a place "where music touches spirit."

Over the past four decades, we have been known as the Gwinnett Festival Singers, Atlanta Sacred Chorale, and now Atlanta Master Chorale. While there have been many transformations through the years, our mission to sing at the highest level of choral artistry remains.

We have evolved into an auditioned metro-area choir with a repertoire of over 100 pieces from diverse genres and periods. Our choral music series of 23 pieces is published by MorningStar Music/ECS Publishing Group, and we have commissioned and premiered 8 new choral works and produced 18 recordings (available on CD and digitally). Our inaugural choral composition competition attracted over 400 applications and 250 submissions from across the globe. We continue to be recognized for our superior choral artistry, including invitations to perform live for national audiences of the American Choral Directors Association national convention and the Chorus America convention. And our digital audience continues to grow through our YouTube channel with 8,400 subscribers, 250 music videos, and 3.3 million views.

Our organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a board of directors experienced in finance, engineering, church music, development, business, law, and the performing arts. As a result of our professionalism, artistic excellence, and our strategic pivot during the pandemic, we are a national leader among choral organizations, sought after for workshops and advice.

Whether this is your first, fourth, or fortieth season, Atlanta Master Chorale welcomes you to this year-long celebration of our successful mission:

To inspire and enrich the lives of our community through the performance of inspirational choral music, to sing at the highest level of choral artistry and to be a standard of excellence among performing arts organizations.

Mark this important 40th anniversary with a gift in any amount. May we suggest amounts featuring the number 4: $4, $40, $400, or more? As always, Atlanta Master Chorale thanks you for your past, present, and future support.

Atlanta Master Chorale established the Eric Nelson Artistic Fund (ENAF) in 2020 to honor Eric Nelson’s incredible talents and twenty-year leadership as our artistic director. The ENAF underwrites chorale travel to special performances, commissioned choral works by new or established composers, our annual composition competition, and expenses for high-caliber guest artists who perform or record with the chorale.

ENAF donations may be made online (choose ENAF from the drop-down menu), by mail (indicate ENAF in the memo section of your check), or at the merchandise table in the lobby. AtlantaMasterChorale.org/donate Atlanta Master Chorale| P.O. Box 133201 | Atlanta, GA 30333
