ALL THAT HATH LIFE AND BREATH PRAISE YE THE LORD

Music: René Clausen (b.1953)

Text: From Psalms 96 and 22 © 1981 Fostco Music Press

All that hath life and breath praise ye the Lord, shout to the Lord, alleluia!

Praise the Lord with joyful song, sing to the Lord with thanksgiving, alleluia, praise Him!

All that hath life and breath praise ye the Lord, sing to the Lord a new-made song, praise His name, alleluia!

Unto thee, O Lord, have I made supplication, and cried unto the rock of my salvation; but thou hast heard my voice, and renewed my weary spirit.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation. O my soul praise Him for He is thy health and salvation.

CHICHESTER PSALMS

Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990)

© 1965 The Estate of Leonard Bernstein, Leonard Bernstein Music Publishing Company LLC, Boosey & Hawkes, Inc. Sole Agent

Every summer the Cathedral of Chichester, in Sussex, England, joins forces with its neighbors, Winchester and Salisbury, to produce a music festival. For its 1965 Festival, Leonard Bernstein was commissioned to write these Psalms. Premiered July 31, 1965 at Chichester Cathedral.

Translation (sung in Hebrew)

MOVEMENT I

Psalm 108:2 and Psalm 100

Awake, psaltery and harp: I will rouse the dawn!

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness.

Come before His presence with singing.

Know ye that the Lord, He is God.

It is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves. We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,

And into His courts with praise.

Be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.

For the Lord is good, His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endureth to all generations.

MOVEMENT II

Psalm 23, Psalm 2:1-4

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures, He leadeth me beside the still waters,

He restoreth my soul,

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness,

For His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk

Through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil,

For Thou art with me.

Thy rod and Thy staff

They comfort me.

Why do the nations rage, And the people imagine a vain thing?

The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together

Against the Lord and against His anointed. Saying, let us break their bands asunder, And cast away their cords from us.

He that sitteth in the heavens

Shall laugh, and the Lord

Shall have them in derision!

Thou preparest a table before me

In the presence of my enemies, Thou anointest my head with oil, My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy

Shall follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord

Forever.

MOVEMENT III

Psalm 131, Psalm 133:1

Lord, Lord,

My heart is not haughty, Nor mine eyes lofty, Neither do I exercise myself

In great matters or in things

Too wonderful for me to understand.

Surely I have calmed

And quieted myself,

As a child that is weaned of his mother, My soul is even as a weaned child.

Let Israel hope in the Lord From henceforth and forever.

Behold how good, And how pleasant it is, For brethren to dwell Together in unity.

THIS LOVE BETWEEN US: PRAYERS FOR UNITY

I. BUDDHISM

from the Dhammapada (Buddhist text)

Danda Vagga 10:129-132 (English and Pali)

All beings tremble before violence

sǝbbĕtāntǝsīdǝndāsǝ

All fear death

sǝbbĕbhǝyyǝntĭmǝchūnō

All love life sǝbbĕsǝmjĭvītǝmpĭyǝm

See yourself in others.

Then whom can you hurt?

What harm can you do?

For he who seeks happiness (su-khǝ)

By hurting those who seek happiness

Will never find happiness

For your brother and your sister, they are like you They, too, long to be happy

Never harm them.

dǝndēnānǝhĭmsǝtī

And when you leave this life Then you will find happiness too

II. SIKHISM

from the Guru Granth Sahib (p.1238) (English and Gurumukhi)

How can we call someone evil, when all are the creation of One? mǝndākĭsnōakhĭyāījānsǝbhnāsāhĭbēk

III. CHRISTIANITY

from the Bible

Romans 13:8-13 (English and Malayalam)

Owe no man anything but to love one another. ǝnyōnyĕmsnĕhĭkyūgā

For he that loveth his neighbor hath fulfilled the law.

For, Thou shalt not kill kŭllāchĕyyĭǝrūthǝ

Thou Shalt not steal mōshtĭkĕrūthǝ

Thou Shalt not bear false witness kǝllǝsāchyǝmpārāyǝdǝdā

Thou shalt not covet mōhikkĕrūthǝ

And if there be any other commandment, it is comprised in this word: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

nĭnnĕpolĕnĭntĕǝyyālkārǝnĕyūmsnēhĭkĕnǝm

The love of our neighbor hath no evil. Love, therefore, is the fulfilling of the law.

The night is passed and the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light. jēātĭs

IV. ZOROASTRIANISM

from the Pahlavi Rivayat (8a8) (English and Pahlavi)

All humankind would know its own lineage and stock; hamāgmardōmpaywandudtōhmagīxwēšdānisthē; never would a brother be abandoned in love by his brother nor a sister by her sister. hagurizbrādōyībrādudxwahōyīxwahazdōstīhbēnēhišthē.

as the river finds its way into the ocean jăsĕsǝrītāsĭndhsǝmāī

what is inside me flows into you. hǝmǝrāmǝnlāgā

[For the] one who sees all beings in the Self and the Self in all beings, [he] harbors no hatred;

To the seer, all things become the Self.

What delusion, what sorrow can there be for him (the one?) who beholds such oneness?

Are you searching for me? mōkōkǝhĩḍhūnḍhĕbǝndĕ

I am in the next seat My shoulder rests against yours. mẽtōtĕrĕpāshĕ

The [Lord] is inside you, and also inside me; sāhĕbhǝmmẽsāhĕbtŭmmẽ

[just as] the bloom is hidden in the seed. jăsĕprānābījmẽ

VII. ISLAM

Rumi (along with affirming phrases in other religions)

The lamps may be different, but the Light is the same All religions, all this singing, one song.

I have bestowed on each one a unique mode of worship, I have given every one a unique form of expression.

I look not at the tongue and speech, I look at the spirit and the inward feeling.

Religions are many, God is one.

The lamps are different, but the Light is the same: it comes from Beyond.

ATLANTA MASTER CHORALE has touched people’s hearts and spirits with the transformative power of choral music for more than 35 years. Renowned for our transcendent choral sound, we infuse each performance with emotional depth and a rare expressiveness as part of our mission to “inspire and enrich the lives of our community through choral artistry.” The Chorale’s exquisite blend of pitch, rhythm, text, and voice reaches beyond the stage, drawing listeners into a shared space where music touches spirit.

Our awards include the prestigious Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence from Chorus America and the Prudential Leadership Award for Exceptional Nonprofit Boards presented by BoardSource. We are also the recipient of a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies and recipient of a Leadership DeKalb Community Outreach Project.

Atlanta Master Chorale has performed at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, at Carnegie Hall, and at conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Music Educators National Conference (MENC), Choristers Guild, and American Guild of Organists (AGO). We were also proud to be one of fewer than 30 choirs selected nationwide to perform at ACDA’s National Conference in Minneapolis, March 2017.

Our exciting repertoire has been called “the musical language of the deeper soul” and includes treasures drawn from a broad spectrum of choral music. The Chorale performs concerts in the Atlanta area and throughout the Southeast featuring music from nearly every period and genre including newly commissioned works. Our choral series, published by MorningStar Music/ECS Publishing Group, captures new repertoire premiered by the ensemble, helping to add vibrant original music to the choral field. With our dedicated board, staff, and a roster of skilled volunteer choristers, Atlanta Master Chorale is proud to be a part of the Atlanta arts community.

IN MEMORY OF SAMUEL HAGAN

Atlanta Master Chorale is deeply saddened by the passing of our long-time board member Sam Hagan on March 3. Sam was a celebrated tenor and sang at countless events, both locally and around the world. He provided so much to our organization, sharing his skills, wisdom, and insights, his wonderful personality, warmth, humor, and generous support.

In recent years, Sam was a member of our audition committee and assisted in selecting many of the wonderful voices we currently enjoy in our chorale. We extend our sympathy to his beloved wife, Marti, and know that we will miss him tremendously.

In 2020, Atlanta Master Chorale established the Eric Nelson Artistic Fund (ENAF) to honor Eric Nelson’s incredible talents and twenty-year leadership as our artistic director. The ENAF supports the chorale through underwriting commissioned choral works by new or established composers and covering related costs, subsidizing chorale travel to conferences and conventions, and defraying costs to bring high-caliber guest artists to perform or record with the chorale.

ENAF donations may be made online (choose ENAF from the drop-down menu), by mail (indicate ENAF in the memo section of your check), or at the merchandise table in the lobby.

ATLANTA MASTER CHORALE CHORAL SERIES

Our Atlanta Master Chorale Choral Series, published by MorningStar/ECS Publishing Group, captures new repertoire premiered by the ensemble, helping to add vibrant original music to the choral field. The series features original works and arrangements composed by Eric Nelson, Atlanta Master Chorale’s artistic director, in addition to pieces commissioned by Atlanta Master Chorale from composers Ivo Antognini, Joel Thompson, and Stacey Gibbs. Pieces included in the series are chosen for their technical and expressive qualities.

We hope all who sing them will find those places “where music touches spirit.”
