Mysterious and magic Marrakech. For many centuries, the city at the foot of the Atlas Range has been exerting an almost magical attraction on the international traveller. The enchanting Red City invites its visitors to go astray. The former residence of kings draws travellers from all over the world, willingly seduced by its colours, atmosphere, palaces, riads. Marrakech is a pleasure garden of palm trees, bougainvillea, water pieces,‌ The city appeals to the imagination as a sanctuary suffused with the atmosphere of sultans and pashas, of veils and lazy, sultry nights.

arrakech is an unequalled crucible, a frontal clash, with seduction always getting the upper hand. An exploration of a labyrinth alternates with a visit to the Majorelle Gardens, created by the eponymous French painter and renovated by fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent. Marrakech is sipping a cocktail and slurping mint tea. The city gives Moroccan tradition a twist. Perhaps a trifle sophisticated, but you are visiting Marrakech in order to enjoy life and sensuality. You are seeking the smells and the colours, dining in opulent restaurants with an oriental atmosphere, drinking in a lounge bar as trendy as the hippest in Paris. New hotspots continuously open their doors and the Merrakshis, as the townspeople are called, are masters in the art of building parties. If you don’t score here… TOWN PALACES The pink and red houses of the old royal city, regularly colour-washed, blush fiercely red in the light of the setting sun. Marrakech wants to radiate luxury and fairly succeeds, with a warm welcome in the many town palaces, called riads. These ancient Moroccan town houses with a central patio, communicating with various rooms, are often small palaces and invariably havens of peace and quiet. But it
is easy to pass them by, as they are usually hidden behind discrete but gracefully decorated wooden doors. The contrast between outside and inside is often astounding. You enter a surprisingly beautiful court with plants, a fountain or a swimming pool. The garden is a source of light and coolness, no superfluous luxury in the searing heat of the Maghreb. On the riad’s patios the noise of the city disappears. You are submerged in a silent tranquillity, disturbed only by the call of the muezzin. Far from the bustle, you enjoy the hammam, the scents of baked bread, fresh coffee and bubbling stews. As a matter of fact, many riads double as restaurants, serving delicious couscous, tajine or taboulé. One of the most famous riads is El Fenn, run by Vanessa Branson, yes, sister of. She proves to be a creative art lover with an excellent taste. Each room and suite is unique and the decoration shows the hand of the connoisseur. The Red City has no lack of celebrities. In the Sixties, fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent took refuge in the old, warm Berber city, finding and giving inspiration. Marrakech became hip and growing numbers of Westerners discovered the small palaces. Marrakech became a total clash of old and new, tradition and design. It is both strolling in the gardens, under the minaret of Koutoubia, and shopping in Guéliz, the busy modern centre. Moroccan kitchen predominates, but in

the latest decade more and more food cultures have landed in Marrakech. World food is best represented in GuĂŠliz, where you feel a true cosmopolite. Dar Yacout, somewhat hidden in the labyrinth of the Medina, is probably the best restaurant in town, with opulently decorated rooms, water pieces, waiters in djellabas and fez, live music, a roof terrace. An experience. Many VIPS and international stars enjoy dinner in the atmospheric lighting on the roof terrace or at the basin. Celebrities also frequent Le Tobsil. No, not only in order to see and be seen. DREAMS AND PROMISES
Marrakech is an endless discovery. Especially in the Medina, the old town, unsuspected pearls are always to be found. The souk, a cosy jumble of alleys, could easily be mistaken for the cave of Ali Baba. With kelims and red banners, thick pillows and lute players, you can imagine yourself in a tale of the Arabian Nights. On a street map, the district looks more or less orderly, but in reality the alleys keep dividing into infinity. The main arteries of the souk arrive at the Djemna El Fna square, the so-called Square of the Dead and the proverbial living heart of the city. You are submerged by people practicing the most unusual trades: whirling acrobats, fortune-tellers, palm readers, snake charmers,
natural healers... UNESCO has proclaimed the vast square an Intangible Heritage of Humanity. A title rightly deserved, as this seems a square of dreams and promises, hope and desire and their temporary fulfilment. Of course the square is not the only attraction of the Red City. Marrakech boasts the age-old Koutoubia mosque and many other well preserved monuments, together with beautiful parks and a healthy desert climate. With numerous resorts, a vibrant night life and several golf links, it is presenting itself as the ultimate holiday city. It is a very spiritual place, anchored in tradition, especially in the old Medina. But it is also a city open to new ideas. Through the ages, Marrakech has always welcomed creative people: painters, designers, chefs, writers‌ Everywhere, creative minds are at work. Very inspiring. Just being in the city is enough to stimulate all the senses. In Marrakech colours are beautiful, smells are intoxicating, people still have time to spare and life’s pleasures are appreciated. Passion is ingrained: in every bar, every restaurant you visit, a simple Moroccan meal is a true experience. Embrace an exotic veil and live this crazy dream in the jewel of Africa.
