Camping in West Sweden

– Coastlines, Lakes, and Canals

West Sweden consists of Bohuslän, Dalsland, and Västergötland, each with its own distinct character. Gothenburg is the capital city for Västra Götaland, Sweden’s second-largest city, and is the natural gateway to the wider region. West Sweden’s landscape is one of forests, lakes, plateau mountains, history and agriculture, it also includes shorelines along Sweden’s two largest lakes, Vänern and Vattern and a glittering marine coastline.

Västergötland: Nature and History

In Västergötland, you can enjoy natural landscapes and historical excursions. The area is dominated by the UNESCO-listed plateau mountains and Lakes Vänern and Vättern; perfect for hiking, swimming and kayak tours, it is also home to the historic Göta Canal and fairytale Läckö Castle, 12th century Varnhem Abbey and Viking era Kata Gård. With so much history it’s no wonder the area is known as Sweden’s Cradle.

Bohuslän: Coastal Adventures

Campsites along the Bohuslän coast, offer easy access to the sea and the archipelago. Combine your stay with activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, cycling, and hiking along the granite cliffs. There is plenty to see and do all along the coast so you’re never far from a destination attraction, such as Nordens Ark, Vitlycke Museum, Havets Hus, the Nordic Watercolour Museum, or one of the many picturesque towns and villages.

Dalsland: Wilderness and Lakes

The Dalsland landscape is a little more remote and is mostly dense forest scattered with crystal clear lakes; perfect for a close to nature experience. The scenic Dalsland Canal and sheltered stretches of water, are ideal for kayaking and fishing, and many campsites are close to gravel cycling and hiking trails. Don’t miss the heritage attractions such as Halmens Hus and Not Quite.

Gothenburg: The City by the Sea

Gothenburg is the perfect place to start or end your journey. Campsites near to the centre provide easy access to all the delights of a big city, along with famous attractions such as Liseberg amusement park, Universeum Science Center, and the charming Haga district with its old wooden houses and cobbled streets.

SWEDEN'S BEST ACCOMMODATION

Did you know that camping is the most common holiday accommodation in Sweden? You, dear reader, are one of several million choosing to explore Sweden in the best possible way. By starting with one of the many campsites that form the basis of the Camping.se magazine, you have access to sandy beaches along more than 3,200 km of coastline, forests and national parks in Europe's largest forested areas and actionpacked adventures in the Scandinavian mountain chain, which is 1,700 km long and one of Europe's longest. The people behind the scenes at these campsites create holidays that make new experiences possible, year after year. Information about the campsites starts on page 52.

For this summer, we have zoomed in on Östergötland, a key stronghold in Sweden during the Middle Ages due to its extensive coastline along both lakes and the sea. In Norrbotten, we travelled from the land of the Saami, Jokkmokk, via impressive Storforsen to the Riviera of the Nordics. And in the west we have visited the northern regions of magical Bohuslän, which is filled with picturesque coastal villages and smooth cliffs perfect for swimming. There is much more to discover, of course, and we just know you will find your next dream holiday in this year's edition of the Camping.se magazine.

Fantastic open-air art

Wanås Konst is a sculpture park and a centre for contemporary art and learning in Skåne. With a focus on sculpture and installations, Wanås invites international artists every year to create works at the park. There are currently 70 permanent works, and the park is known for combining art with nature and history. The area also has an art gallery, a medieval castle, and organic farm in addition to the park.

Konst på Hög (Art on High) is a unique sculpture area set on top of Kvarntorpshögen, a slag heap in Närke that is 100 m tall. Shale oil was extracted here between 1940 and 1966, and the area is now one of Sweden's leading sculpture areas with around 30 sculptures by both Swedish and international artists. Visitors can drive to the top or walk up the 427 steps in one of Europe's longest staircases.

Welcome to Sweden

Here are some of the need-to-know things about Sweden that will make your vacation run smoother.

ACCESS TO SWEDISH NATURE

The public right of access is a unique right that applies to all visitors to Sweden. This is why you can swim in lakes, sunbathe on beaches and pick flowers, berries and mushrooms. Read more on page 16.

Fishing in Sweden

Sweden is a paradise for people who like to go fishing. You are free to fish the coastline and major lakes – Vänern, Vättern, Mälaren, Hjälmaren and Storsjön – but a permit is needed elsewhere. At Camping.se, you can search for campsites located close to good fishing waters. These campsites usually also sell fishing permits.

Dogs and cats

Pets brought into Sweden must have a passport and ID marking, be both vaccinated and dewormed, and be reported to Swedish Customs. More information is available at jordbruksverket.se

Seasonal higlights

Sweden is a long country, stretching over 1,500 kilometers from north to south. Naturally, both the weather and the number of sunlight hours vary greatly depending on the season and the region.

SPRING (MARCH–MAY)

Valborgsmässoafton (Walpurgis Night) is celebrated on April 30th with bonfires and songs, marking the arrival of brighter days. In the north, melting snow unveils vast wilderness and powerful rivers.

SUMMER (JUNE–AUGUST)

June 6th marks Sweden’s National Day, but Midsummer, celebrated in mid-June, is the most cherished holiday nationwide. In the north, you can experience the midnight sun, while all of Sweden enjoys at least 18 hours of daylight each day. Swedish schoolchildren are on summer break from mid-June to mid-August.

AUTUMN (SEPTEMBER–NOVEMBER)

Frost and darkness arrive earlier in the north than in the south, painting the landscape with vivid autumn colors and offering spectacular auroras. Picking mushrooms and lingonberries is a beloved pastime across the country.

WINTER (DECEMBER–FEBRUARY)

In the north, winter transforms the region into an Arctic wonderland with auroras, dog sledding, and skiing. Traditions like Advent and Lucia, celebrated on December 13th, bring warmth and light to the long, dark days.

DRINKING WATER

In Sweden, tap water is generally considered very good and safe to drink.

BORGHOLM CASTLE

On the western coast of Öland, the mighty ruins of Borgholm Castle rise, originally built 900 years ago but destroyed in a fire in the early 19th century. Here, you can wander through arches and halls where the stones whisper of everything from bloody battles to splendid feasts. The castle is framed by Öland’s rugged landscape, ideal for a picnic in the golden twilight. The ruins attract history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike, and the expansive views from the castle grounds are unparalleled. During the summer, the castle comes alive with guided tours, concerts, and family events, transforming the historic setting into a vibrant hub of culture and entertainment.

GREAT REASONS TO BUY LOCAL

Farms with organic production and animals on natural pastures are important for many reasons, especially biodiversity. As grazing animals roam, they create variation in the vegetation that contributes to the coexistence of more species.

GREEN FARM STORES!

In farm stores, visitors often find that little something extra when it comes to organic food and crafts from the region. Here are five stores worth a visit.

EUFÅRIA, PITEÅ, NORRBOTTEN

Washable lambskins produced in-house, wool yarn, crafts made of leather and wool from the farm and other local small-scale producers . Meat orders can be placed prior to the autumn slaughter. The store also sells charcuterie, different types of lamb sausages, and smoked lamb steak.

KRETSLOPPSHUSET, MÖRSIL, JÄMTLAND

Cosy restaurant, café and store with food crafts and conference facilities and an organic focus. Despite its yellow facade, it is called "a wonderful green building and a delight for all five senses". There are also hens and small-scale farming.

SUNT & GRÖNT, BJÖRNHOVDA, ÖLAND

In the tiny shed 2 km from Färjestaden, passersby can purchase organic vegetables, marmalade, and more. It is all produced on the farm, which has been owned by the same family since 1903. The shed is usually stocked from June to late October, depending on the weather.

BÅLTSNÄS, KATRINEHOLM, SÖDERMANLAND

This farm store has specialised in wild game from local hunters, including red deer, wild pig, roe deer, and elk. It also sells red deer/wild pig and lamb sausages without added preservatives and other organic and locally produced goods. The lambskins come from the farm's own animals.

LINDEGRENS, BÅSTAD, SKÅNE

A store/bistro that primarily sells and serves organic meat – beef, lamb, and pork from local farms – but also offers vegetarian dishes made from locally grown organic produce. It also makes pâté, sausages and other charcuterie products. The store is also stocked with kitchenware, porcelain and books.

PUBLIC RIGHT OF ACCESS

Sweden's unique right of public access allows us to move freely almost everywhere, pick berries and mushrooms, and pitch a tent in nature. The right of public access was a tradition in Sweden for hundreds of years, and it was added to Sweden's constitution in 1994 to ensure that nature is for everyone – and to protect it. Here are some examples of what this means.

Do not disturb, do not destroy

Always try to choose the path that does the least damage to nature, and avoid cycling or running over sensitive surfaces such as lichen, moss, meadows and marshes. Also, remember not to disturb the animals, particularly those with offspring.

Pitching a tent

Terrain Driving Act

The right of public access allows us to spend time in nature, but the Terrain Driving Act limits this access for motorised vehicles. For example, you may not drive offroad with a caravan or camper since this damages nature. This rule applies to all land that is not a road, rest area, or similar.

PICK FLOWERS

Pick and enjoy anything edible that grows in the wild. Pick flowers as well – but remember not to damage the plant itself. It is OK to pick an individual flower, but never dig up an entire plant. However, some rare flowers are protected in all of Sweden and may never be picked, such as blue anemone, cowslip, mistletoe and all orchids.

TRACK YOUR BEST FRIEND

LIGHT A FIRE

Starting a fire in nature is often allowed as long as you are careful that it does not spread or damage the nature. For example, rock outcrops and large boulders can be damaged by fire. However, gravel, sand or wet ground are good alternatives for a controlled fire. However, during a dry summer, fires are usually banned in large parts of the country.

NO LEFTOVER MEAT FOR ANIMALS

You may pitch a tent in most places where it is not expressly forbidden, but only for a day or two and never in groups larger than 2 or 3 tents to avoid excessive wear on nature. Tents are also not allowed too close to private residences or in city parks.

To protect wild animals, we must monitor our four-legged friends and keep them on a lead. We want to avoid stressing animals if possible, especially if they are with their young. Dogs should be on a lead to show respect for the other people we might meet in the forest.

It is very important not to leave behind leftover food with meat. This can spread serious diseases that cause suffering for wild animals.

LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND

Get in the habit of tucking an empty plastic bag in your pack to easily bring home everything that does not belong in nature.

The right of public access works because those of us who use it make sure we follow it.

West coast adventures in Bohuslän

Bohuslän is a stunning coastal region lined with an archipelago of 8,000 islands. Picturesque fishing villages are scattered throughout the area, making them perfect spots to enjoy fresh seafood and take a dip in the sea.

TEXT: LINUS FREMIN PHOTO: JOHAN STRINDBERG

Passing through northern Bohuslän is like going back in time, with every step taking you closer to your forefathers. In scenic Tanum awaits a world with thousands of Bronze Age rock carvings, where people scraped their lives and dreams onto the province's smooth rock slabs. These prehistoric works of art are so unique that UNESCO has named them a World Heritage Site, and standing among them allows visitors a glimpse of what life was like in the Bronze Age.

Bohuslän's dramatic landscape shaped by the continental ice sheet creates the perfect canvas. More than 1,500 drawings have been found here, and those found in Tanum are particularly diverse: ships that hint of adventure, sledges of long winter days, and weapons of the era's battles and hunting. Pictures of animals, humans and symbols describe their beliefs, rites and daily life, but history is alive not only in the rock carvings. Only a short car ride from Tanum's relics, just

outside the charming coastal town of Grebbestad, lies Saltviks Camping and the unique Tjurpannan Nature Reserve, with a rich history that stretches back to World War II. Soldiers guarded the coast during the war, and after the war they returned with their families, drawn by the dramatic nature.

CAMPING IN THE NATURE RESERVE

Here, among the rocks and the sea, Saltviks Camping was born, and has since then grown and changed, but always preserved its heritage and close link to nature.

"The campsite has changed a lot since my great uncle's era. I grew up here, of course, since it was a family business, and I took over after my father, who ran it for a long time," says Joakim Ulvhammar, who today owns and operates the campsite with his wife Elin.

It features 22 fully equipped cottages and three static caravans with a fantastic sea view. Located

Kungshamn truly captures the beauty of Bohuslän, with piers, islets, and boats in every direction.

in the heart of the Tjurpannan Nature Reserve, it is able to offer adventure-filled activities: from pedal boats, SUPs, and motorboats to cycling. Or why not stay on solid ground and enjoy the soothing view? The nature here is wild and unpredictable.

"Because we have such a great location, we attract all sorts of visitors year-round. Here, you can be active all year or just sit with a book and enjoy the surroundings," says Elin Ulvhammar.

ADVENTURE AND RARE ANIMALS

And there is more to explore in the area. New adventures await one hour away by car for those who want to combine nature with an active holiday. Climb Vetteberget in Fjällbacka and be rewarded with a fantastic view of the archipelago, or bike along the Kuststigen coastal route through picturesque villages and past historical sites.

Be impressed on a day trip to the rock formations at Ulebergshamn, and Ekoparksleden – a 4.5 km hiking trail located further inland –offers a glimpse of what the province was like in the 1700–1800s.

"Here, you can be active all year or just sit with a book and enjoy the surroundings"

For animal lovers, a visit to Nordens Ark is a must. This zoo, which is next to the Ekoparksleden trail, is home to some of the world's most endangered species, and work is underway to protect both them and biodiversity. Walk along a 3 km path and observe Siberian tigers, snow leopards, wolves and more. For the smallest visitors, there is a petting farm with Swedish mountain cattle, Gute sheep and Gotland rabbits. In an enclosure with goats we find Belinda Nässén, a seasonal worker at Nordens Ark.

"Nordens Ark has lots of different animals, and it is my job to both take care of them and talk to visitors about them. It is a really fun summer job," she says, while she allows a young girl to pet one of the goats.

THRIVING ARCHIPELAGO LIFE

Not far from the border to Norway lies Sweden's most westerly city, Strömstad. There are a lot of prehistoric remains here, as well as a bustling cluster of restaurants, bars and cafés along the short quay. For those looking to swim, there are

plenty of cliffs but also sand beaches, for example at the Saltpannan Nature Reserve at Västra Rossö island, or the highly recommended Koster islands. At the Kosterhavet National Park, you can easily fill an entire day with excursions, swimming, snorkling and boat rides. And there is always something fun happening in Strömstad during the summer months.

As you travel along the coast of Bohuslän, the sea will be a steady companion. There are many places here that are difficult to pass without stopping. Bovallstrand and Hunnebostrand, two coastal villages, are fantastically integrated into the high, red granite cliffs. Lysekil is another gem, boasting a landscape that only the skilled artist could imitate. Stångehuvud Nature Reserve is the perfect place to enjoy the warmth of the sun with its rolling cliffs of 920-million-year-old Bohus granite. Also in Lysekil, the aquarium Havets

Hus allows visitors to peek beneath the water's surface and even pet some marine animals.

A short trip to the north, the Smögen Pier stretches for an impressive 600 m and is lined with fishing huts, charming boutiques and restaurants serving freshly caught fish and shellfish. Early risers can watch as the fishing boats offload their catch, which will later be available for purchase in one of the fish shops. Several boat trips, for example to Hållö and Kungshamn, and cruises through the beautiful Sote Canal leave from the pier. You can also go on a seal safari or join a local fisherman for some deep sea fishing.

Smögenbryggar’n, a local brewery that utilizes the sea's ingredients, is the perfect destination for thirsty visitors. The brewery uses seaweed and clam shells to create beers flavoured by the west coast's rich marine life. CEO Jesper Jonasson gives us a tour of the brewery,

If you like swimming, especially in adventurous settings, Bohuslän will not disappoint.

proudly explaining how they have combined their passion for beer and the sea in each bottle they produce.

"We are unique because we brew with marine ingredients. For example, we use clam shells as the pH adjuster in our stout, Svarta Malin, to increase the hardness of the water instead of using industrial calcium or nitrates. We also use seaweed to create more flavour since it contains the taste umami, which captures nuances of malt and hops in the beer.

Whether you are looking for a craft beer and fresh fish, for an adventure in dramatic nature, or to simply enjoy the raw, serene beauty of the sea, you can find it in Bohuslän. It is also the perfect destination during seasons other than high summer, with a sun that glitters on the sea longer in the spring and the impressive autumn weather made to caress the dramatic cliff formations along the coast.

Helpful tips about driving in Sweden

SEATBELT

Sweden has a law that the driver and all passengers must wear a seatbelt. Children shorter than 135 cm must ride in a suitably adapted car seat.

LIGHTS

Low beams/daytime running lights should be on during the day.

SPEED LIMITS

Standard cars and B-license motorhomes must follow advertised speed limits. In urban areas, the speed limit is usually 50 km/h. On open country roads the speed limit is 80 or 90 km/h, and on highways 110 km/h or occasionally 120 km/h. The speed limit for standard cars pulling a trailer or camper is 80 km/h.

LAW REGARDING ALCOHOL

A person may only operate a vehicle in Sweden if their blood alcohol level is 0.2 or lower.

WINTER DRIVING

If you visit Sweden during the period 1/12–31/3, standard cars and trailers must have winter tyres on all four wheels when driving in winter road conditions. Studded winter tyres are permitted during the period 1/10–15/4. If the towing vehicle has studded tyres, the trailer must also have studded tyres when driving in winter road conditions. It is also a good idea to have a winter kit in the vehicle that includes

a reflective vest, jumping cables, an ice scraper, a spade, a towline and a bag of gravel to help with tyre grip.

EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

The emergency number for Sweden is 112. It is free to call this number from any telephone, including mobile telephones, even without a SIM card. In Sweden, it is a requirement to have a warning triangle in the car.

WILDLIFE ACCIDENTS

Sweden is home to many different species of wildlife, including elk and deer, which can sometimes wander out onto roads. Be particularly observant when driving in rural and forested areas, particularly at sunrise or sundown when the animals are the most active.

CONGESTION TAX

Congestion tax are only charged in Stockholm and Gothenburg. The congestion tax is not charged weekdays between 6:30 PM and 5:59 AM, on Saturdays and Sundays, on the day before a public holiday, on public holidays, or in July. The tax can only be paid via invoice or direct debit. There are no toll booths or pay stations. For vehicles registered abroad, invoices and payments are sent via EPASS24. More information is available at EPASS24's website.

LIQUID PETROLEUM GAS

tanks in Sweden is called POL. It is also possible to fill own bottles with liquid petroleum gas. Some service locations are listed at www.gasolfyllarna.se or www.gasolkartan.se. Liquid petroleum gas tanks may never be stored lying down since this disengages the safety valve.

SWEDISH TRANSPORT ADMINISTRATION FERRIES

In some locations in Sweden, there are road ferries operated by the Swedish Transport Administration to transport cars and other passengers across sounds or to islands free of charge. There are two exceptions: a fee is charged for Ekeröleden and Visingsöleden.

ELECTRICAL HOOK-UP AT CAMPSITES

In Sweden, the standard voltage is 230 V in a normal electrical plug at campsites, and fuses are normally 10 A or 16 A. Sweden uses the Type F electrical plug (a Schuko plug) with 10 A or a CEE plug with 10 A or 16 A. The connection cable must be an approved type with an area of 3 x 2.5 mm² and not be more than 25 m long. EVs may only be charged at specific stations intended for this type of charging; never via the electrical hook-up pole at the campsite pitch.

EV CHARGING STATION

Public charging stations are found throughout most of Sweden. However, availability can be very limited in some places, primarily in northern Sweden and in rural settings. Plan in advance for trips to these areas.

The archipelago boats leave from several different places on the east coast of Östergötland, including Arkösund, Gryt and Tyrislöt, the latter next to Tyrislöt's campsite.

Östergötland – a cultural gem on the east coast

Embark on a journey to discover ancient ruins, prehistoric remains, a wealth of outdoor adventures, and a charming archipelago. Just two hours south of the capital, the Östergötland region has something for everyone to enjoy.

TEXT: JOEL LINDE PHOTO: JOHAN STRINDBERG

Location, location, location. This is a common mantra for real estate agents but also a fitting description of Östergötland. To the east, bays, cliffs and beaches of the glittering Baltic Sea, dotted with thousands of islands in picturesque archipelagos, and 150 km to the west, the coastline of Lake Vättern, Europe's sixth largest lake, where the sunset casts a golden hue across the plains of the coastal landscape. And in between, cosy villages along the Göta Canal, large cities rich with culture, and enchanting forests and nature. There are also approx. 50,000 known historical remains in one of Sweden's key medieval regions, which can now display its heritage.

ON SACRED GROUND

In a small bay along Lake Vättern's eastern shoreline stands a monument for one of Sweden's most famous people. Saint Birgitta planned and designed Vadstena Abbey, which opened in 1384 and still stands there proudly today. Almost two centuries later, another impressive construction was raised a few hundred meters away. At Vadstena Castle, or King Gustav Vasa's Rennaisance castle, visitors can experience everything from exhibitions and guided tours to concerts, theater, and lots of events for kids.

Vadstena has held a prominent role in Swedish history, and it continues to thrive today. With a permanent population of just over 5,000, this picturesque city on the shore of Lake Vättern attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. People stroll serenely along the beachwalk with

their camera close at hand. The evening sun pulls people to the outdoor restaurants, turning their drink glasses into golden chalices.

"At Vadstena, they are event experts. There are concerts, culture, and a lot going on around the castle," says Marita Fagrell, who together with her partner runs Vadstena Camping just outside the city.

Seaside is the only location here – a strip of shoreline lined with campers, caravans, and tents in prime swimming location, never more than a few steps away.

"We have a strong focus on families with children, and more are coming, too. We have done a lot so they enjoy their time here," says Marita, listing a jumping cushion, three playgrounds, a padel court, a pump track, a climbing wall, a football pitch, a zip line, an obstacle course, minigolf, boules and children's quizzes...and she hasn't even mentioned the fantastic swimming in the bay and

the dock that stretches 30 m into the lake.

But it is not a place to party, she emphasises.

"We tell those who are looking to come here to pary that they will not have fun here, that we will be on them all the time," she says with a hearty laugh.

It is very peaceful at the campsite. Guests are grilling, playing, swimming or enjoying a drink on the newly built dock next to the restaurant, all with the greatest view of the lingering sunset.

"No restaurant in town has this view," Marita notes with a nod towards the horizon.

Vadstena Castle, raised on the order of King Gustav Vasa, is the crowning glory of the medieval stronghold Vadstena. Events and guided tours are arranged for the entire family in and around the castle.
At Vadstena Camping, it's not hard to enjoy dinner while the sun is setting.

EXPLORING INLAND

A short bike ride from Vadstena Camping is the restaurant Ladugård 206, whose lunch attracts visitors from far away. Over 20 years, the Linde family has created a destination that now attracts visitors with not only a deli, an interiors boutique, and a coffee roastery but also the farm restaurant.

After a proper meal, we leave Vadstena and set our sights on the east coast and the Saint Anna archipelago. But there is a lot to see on the way, for example Vreta Abbey with its lush walkways. In Old Linköping, a short car ride away, we walk around the city, shop in boutiques, and grab a cup of coffee at a café. There is also a large selection of activities for families with children.

Borenshult, Berg and Hulta are home to several of the Göta Canal's 58 locks and the perfect stop for a coffee break while travelling. One of the most visited locks is in Söderköping – another town with well-preserved 19th and 20th century charm. As the historic three-decker ship Wilhelm Tham slowly sails through the still waters of the canal, only the mobile phones in stretched-out hands show that it is not 1912.

Söderköping is also where Astrid Lindgren's beloved Madicken movies were filmed in 1978 and 1979. Why not watch the movies in the caravan and then hike in Madicken's footsteps using the map available at soderkoping.se?

CAMPING IN THE ARCHIPELAGO

Hop on M/S Athene for a number of tours along Göta Canal and experience both locks and Stegeborg's stately castle ruins. Our journey continues eastward, though, towards Tyrislöt Camping out in the Saint Anna archipelago.

The shimmering bay is visible from the cottages on the hill. Such mornings are humbling, made perfect by a breakfast tray with yoghurt, bread, eggs and coffee, a new addition at the campsite in line with manager Charlotte Rosell’s business spirit.

"Up on the hill was an old air watch tower," she says.

"From there you can see the archipelago in every direction. It is so beautiful. I want to renovate it to hold weddings and other exciting events up there."

She laughs.

"Yes, those dreams are a lot of work."

Tyrislöt's location and design are unique. It

was once a farm, broken down into small fields, and the charming red wooden buildings remain today and function as service buildings. When Charlotte took over 30 years ago, she intended to sell handicraft with a friend. Two years later she was a campsite manager with a ten-year contract.

"I love this place. I want to develop it and to keep it in the family. When my grandkids finish school, they will come here just like my sons did when I took over 30 years ago," she says.

THE HEART OF THE ARCHIPELAGO

For guests, the location and nature are the prime attraction. Many bring their own kayaks or rent just outside Tyrislöt to explore the surrounding archipelago. Archipelago boats stop a few hundred meters from the campsite on their way to the idyllic island Harstena, among other places.

”I love this place. I want to develop it and keep it in the family”

Undoubtedly a meeting place in the outer archipelago, it welcomes us with open arms. The aroma from the smokehouse greets us before we even dock. We can't resist going straight to the restaurant Loftet to enjoy the delicacies of the sea. The butter-fried herring with lingonberries and mashed potatoes is phenomenal. We also splurge and share a lobster with truffle aioli. The sun-drenched terrace could have kept us there to sunset, but there is more to explore in Harstena. First, we recommend a walk through the village, a rare archipelago gem that dates back to the 1700s. Rent a kayak or swim from the cliffs in one of the many bays. The bakery Harstena Bageri offers excellent value for money – one favourite is the almond and chocolate cake.

It would be easy to spend half a day – or a full day – here before returning to Tyrislöt. From there, Östergötland awaits discovery. Our journey heads north on the ferry in Stegeborg, past the impressive castle ruins and over to the peninsula Vikbolandet, where we continue onward to eat dinner among Arkösund's boathouses and bobbing sailboats.

Did you know this about

GOLDEN EAGLE

The golden eagle has a wingspan of more than 2 m. It prefers to glide on air currents but can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. Even if it sometimes goes after large prey, it has difficulty lifting more than 2–3 kg.

Sweden's Big 5?!

You may have heard about Africa's Big 5, but have you heard about the Swedish equivalent? We have four large predators on the ground – bear, wolf, lynx and wolverine – and sometimes the golden eagle up high also makes the list. What do you know about them?

In Sweden, there are approximately 450 wolves left in the wild. A fully grown wolf is 90 cm, which is 30 cm taller than a German Shepherd. Wolves can cover many kilometres in a day, and they can reach speeds of up to 50–60 km/h on shorter distances. It is a myth, though, that wolves howl at midnight and at a full moon. Howling is how they communicate and enables

WOLVERINE

The wolverine is Europe's largest marten. It is roughly the size of a dog, but much stronger. If the conditions are right, a wolverine can attack prey several times its size, such as reindeer, but it is an average hunter and often eats whatever larger predators leave behind. It is therefore sometimes called the Nordic hyena. SWEDEN'S BIG 5

BROWN BEAR

The brown bear is our largest predator. Its body can be up to 280 cm long, and it weighs around 400 kg. Despite its weight, it can also run up to 70 km/h! The brown bear starts to hibernate in October, but before this it eats 20,000 calories a day – primarily berries and ants, but also moose calves.

LYNX

The lynx is Scandinavia's largest feline, and there are around 1,300 in Sweden. The lynx is easy to recognize from its ear tufts, but the purpose of these tufts is not fully known. Some researchers believe that they help discover things above head level, while others believe they are a different kind of sense or improve hearing. Maybe the answer is all of the above?

DISCOVER SWEDEN

Historical trails

Discover Sweden’s beautiful nature by hiking along one of the many pilgrim paths. Feel the beat of history as you follow in the footsteps of our ancestors.

”WORK MORE – TRAVEL LESS”

There are around 40 pilgrim paths to various places in Sweden, and many have been restored in recent years. Whatever the preferred distance, they offer an exciting alternative to "normal" hiking trails.

During the Middle Ages, people travelled to spiritual destinations for reconciliation or to give thanks. It is estimated that millions of people went on pilgrimages, with 20–50 percent of Europe's adult population believing to have made a pilgrimage between the years 1150–1450! The destination for many

was Nidaros Cathedral (Trondheim, Norway) in the north and Santiago de Compostella (Spain) in the south. A network of paths connected them, passing churches and holy places across Europe.

Pilgrimages were so popular among Swedes that King Gustav Vasa banned them in 1527, reportedly declaring that people "should work more and travel less".

HIKING WITH MANY GOALS

Walking these paths is a great way to enjoy beautiful nature, learn about Swedish history, and heal both mind and body.

3. GÖTA ÄLV PILGRIM PATH, VÄSTERGÖTLAND/DALSLAND

From Gothenburg to Vänersborg, and then on to Trondheim, Norway, via the pilgrim path in Dalsland province, with many scenic lookout points.

4. ST. OLOF'S TRAIL, GOTLAND

Olav Haraldsson is said to have brought Christianity to Gotland when he came ashore at St. Olofsholm in 1029. The trail heads due west to Visby Cathedral.

5. ST. BIRGITTA WAY, ÖSTERGÖTLAND

Follows the path travelled by St. Birgitta's relics in 1371. It winds through beautiful Östergötland, at times along the Göta Canal.

Swirling adventures in Swedish Lapland

It’s easy to fall in love with northern Sweden’s landscape, where raging rivers carve through vast woods, majestic mountain ranges rise in the distance, and the midnight sun casts everything in a shimmering glow. A visit to the Swedish counties Lapland and Norrbotten, and places like Storforsen River, will leave no one unmoved.

Not far north of the Arctic Circle next to the Lule river sits Arctic Camp Jokkmokk. Families grill, swim and enjoy the large playground, but Arctic Camp's northerly position gives it two sides.

"Now, in the summer, it is largely a family campsite. Most guests come from northern Norway, where the weather is not as nice as here," says campsite manager Pia Emretsson.

"Later, during the off-season, our guests are mainly German and Dutch who come to experience the nature, northern lights, elk – and the cold."

Jokkmokk might be most known for its annual winter market. The town has a rich Saami history, and we had time to visit both Ájjte Museum and Jokkmokks Tenn – two classic institutions known well-beyond Sweden's borders.

Ájjte adds to the mountains' nature and culture with themed exhibitions on the Saami and settlers. The old marketplace is also the door to World Heritage Laponia, and the museum offers a breathtak-

ing interactive journey into the mountains.

The food culture is a chapter unto itself, with master chef Joel Forsman at the restaurant Dàlvvadis concocting Lapland delicacies. On the outdoor terrace with view of Talvatissjön lake, we enjoy the evening meal of cured and dried reindeer, mountain char fried in butter, and grilled reindeer fillet.

UNREGULATED POWER

The next day we head to the Storforsen rapids in the Piteälven river. The river is unregulated, and the rapids are the Nordics' largest. The waters swirl with impressive power for almost 5 km. The rapids were used already in the 1800s to transport logs from inland down to the coast.

From Storforsens Camping, we can see the waterfall located in the Storforsen Nature Reserve. We rent a bike to see it up close. Storforsen Nature Trails, a trail system between Storforsen and Brudforsen, opened in 2021 and is used by hikers, runners and cyclists.

The nature reserve also has a rich cultural

After several hours of walking, lunch at Kaffestugan is the perfect break, a stone's throw from the trail. Its rustic menu includes grilled elk burger and reindeer stew.

We take the opportunity to walk towards the river to see the rapids up close, balancing on wooden pathways and bridges, passing ravines and stone depressions that form natural lagoons. We stand at one of the lookout spots for a long time, enjoying the swirling water.

It may be late summer, but the essence of the midnight sun is still present as the light lingers. And the rapids are perhaps most beautiful to explore in the evening as the sun paints the landscape with orange-red hues.

A new day promises new adventure. We drive 30 minutes to Stockfors, just north of Älvsbyn, where Rikard Öhman has his ranch. He has been drawing tourists for more than 35 years with horseback adventures in the wild forest.

Guests pull on an oilskin coat, leather trousers, and a hat and spend a day or weekend as a cowboy, riding Western in a comfortable saddle.

"Riding is very much about following the horse's natural movements," says Rikard, showing the technique after we settle into our saddles.

He describes the interaction vividly. Communication without words. Loose reins, intuitive listening, and focus are three key concepts.

After a few simple exercises, we set off. Across the bridge at the Stockforsälven river onto a winding forest path, where we walk and trot and later try our first gallop.

We rock with the horse, whooping as the wind rushes by, together with our new riding friends.

The ride continues across vast pine heaths, rising into the forested mountains, where the horses

expertly pick their way through the terrain.

After a few hours, Rikard skilfully lights a fire and we eat lunch on one of the ridges.

"Fatwood burns well, no matter the weather," he shares as he pulls out cold-smoked reindeer from his saddlebag, placing the slices in a skillet to fry with lots of butter.

He adds flat bread, onions and chili sauce – the perfect meal for hungry riders.

Soon we will be back on the path, with one last gallop towards the ranch in Stockfors, but first a cup of coffee from a sooty kettle.

RIVIERA OF THE NORTH

Pite Havsbad is next, a campsite that for many summers has had the most sun hours in Sweden, where the biggest attraction is the long sand beach. Pite Havsbad gained a name in Sweden already in the summer of 1956 when its swimming waters were named the warmest in Sweden. The term Riviera of the North was quickly established, and at the beginning of the 1960s the campsite had 1,000 tent pitches and around 20 cottages.

Brothers Göran and Anders Lasson from Ystad

and their wives Karin and Pia are a few of the guests enjoying the beachside location.

They are sitting outside their campers with the sea a mere 20 m away.

"We have heard that Pite Havsbad is one of Sweden's best campsites, and it is true that the beach and its surroundings are impressive," says Anders with a satisfied smile. They have been travelling for almost two weeks via Strömstad, Funäsdalen, and Dorotea, with their bikes strapped to their campers.

We head on to visit Spafyren, a spa next to the beach, perfect after a day spent on the back of a horse. We pamper our sore muscles in both the steam sauna and the heated pool before enjoying dinner at Strand Bistro next door.

Early the next morning we head to Renöhamn in Piteå archipelago, where we rent kayaks from Hansi Gelter, an experienced kayaker and nature guide. This is the ideal destination for those who like to be at sea. The archipelago consists of almost 600 islands, and many can be reached by scheduled boats and water taxis.

"I have developed around 20 trails for both

beginners and more experienced kayakers," says Hansi as he points to the map. He lives here at Renön and also offers sea tours.

We spend the morning exploring scenic Inrefjärden before returning to the harbour for coffee with Hansi.

In the evening we continue on to Jävre Old Mill to the south, which has a museum and a café.

It is also not far to the island Rönnskär in the archipelago via scheduled boats from Kinnskär. Instead, we explore the archaeology path, which leads to Sweden's northernmost burial ground and has several Iron Age and Bronze Age cairns and rock formations.

NEW STAR IN THE CULINARY SKY

We spend the evening in Piteå, an idyllic small town with a historic town centre. One of the more picturesque areas is around Malmgatan, with wooden houses featuring impressive carpentry. We wander down the pedestrian street towards the lively park Badhusparken.

Dinner awaits at the restaurant Centrum at Rådhustorget, next to Piteå Museum. Chef Johan Eriksson, after working at some of the leading restaurants in Sweden, has now returned home and put Piteå and Norrbotten on the culinary map. His refined dishes featuring shellfish, whitefish roe, lamb and char are alluring and promise an enchanting evening, particularly outdoors with warm breezes from the south.

DISCOVER SWEDEN

Two of the best things about a camping holiday are the total freedom and all the options available on the open road. Sometimes there are almost too many options, and then it is nice to have a little help making decisions. The following pages do just that. We have broken Sweden down into five destinations: South, West, East, Mid and North. This makes it easy for you to find suitable campsi-

tes in the area you want to visit. You will find tips on things to do and places to visit and wonderful maps that illustrate Sweden’s beauty and variation. We hope that you will be inspired to explore our fantastic country, broaden your horizons, and take home many fantastic memories. Wherever you choose to go, we hope you will find a campsite in the following pages that is right for you.

A certified Swedish campsite is a safe choice for your holiday

As our guest, we want you to feel safe and confident when booking your accommodation. Look for Svensk Camping's membership emblem during your holiday so you can be sure that you have made a safe choice and are staying at a certified facility.

Svensk Camping is an industry and marketing organisation that promotes the growth of camping in Sweden. Our goal is for you – our guests – to have the best holiday experience, from inspiration to booking and arrival to departure. And to create the best possible conditions for our member firms to operate and develop their campsites. The vision we share with our members is to make Sweden Europe's best camping destination.

Svensk Camping runs Camping.se, Sweden's largest website for inspiration and booking accommodation at campsites. All our member facilities are listed here. We have compiled approximately 300 campsites across the country, including 50,000 pitches and 7,000 cottages. From small touring pitches to large resorts. Our members are experts at holidays. They create the experiences and memories you will carry with you for life.

Choose the right campsite

A SIGN OF QUALITY

To become a member of Svensk Camping, campsites must be run well and meet our minimum standard requirements. All member firms meet the requirements in our certification for Swedish campsites, which were introduced in 2022. Certification functions as a complement to Svensk Camping's classification, and together these two systems contribute to the industry's long-term focus on quality. Becoming a certified Swedish campsite is a stamp of quality that shows that the campsite complies with applicable laws and regulations on good business ethics and serious business practices. The certification requires the campsites to meet minimum requirements on work environment, sustainability, complaint procedures and onsite safety. A certified campsite, in other words, is a safe and secure choice for you as a guest.

"The vision we share with our member firms is to make Sweden Europe's best camping destination."

COMPARE STANDARD AND SELECTION

A campsite that, in addition to certification, has also chosen to be classified according to Svensk Camping's classification system provides its guests with additional information about its services and standard. We hope this helps you compare and choose the holiday accommodation that best suits your needs. The classification system scores different areas that are important for the holiday experience, and the stars summarise the scores the campsite received within four categories: service buildings, the area, facilities and activities. The number of stars provides you with a quick overview of the standard you can expect at the campsite.

47%

Staying at a campsite is the most common way to spend the night when travelling around Sweden during the summer months. During July, the peak holiday month, as many as 47 per cent of all guest nights are spent at a campsite.

Find your match

When you are searching for a campsite at Camping.se, you can filter the campsites by their number of stars. This makes it easy for you to find campsites that best meet your needs.

At Camping.se, you can choose from 50,000 pitches and 7,000 cottages.

Check in quickly and easily with Camping Key

Svensk Camping is a retailer of Camping Key Europe, a membership card used by one million guests throughout Europe. In Sweden, the card is digital and used via the Camping Key app. Camping Key Europe gives you more holiday for your money and also makes sure you are insured during your holiday. Read more about card benefits at Campingkeyeurope.se.

The Camping Key app allows quick and easy check-in at many campsites that are members of Svensk Camping. Either as a premium user with your Camping Key Europe membership or through the free version Camping-ID. Cultural landscape

Artists flock to places like Österlen and Öland, while Småland has a long tradition of glass blowing.

Life in the archipelago

Blekinge's archipelago, with 1,000+ islands, is perfect for boat trips, fishing and exploring nature.

Diverse nature

Skåne offers open landscape with rolling hills and a coastline with beaches and shallow water. The deep forests and crystal-clear lakes of Småland promise fantastic kayaking, fishing and hiking in pristine nature.

Öland has alvar plains, mythical forests and wide beaches.

Local produce Blekinge, aka Sweden's garden, and the other southern provinces offer fantastic fruit and berry farms and well-stocked farm stores.

DESTINATION SOUTH

Fantastic hang-out

Europe's longest zipline is located at scenic Klavreström in Småland. On lines totalling more than 4.5 km and four different rides, visitors can embark on a spectacular flight across the wilderness: steep slopes, gurgling streams, deep ravines, thick forests and glittering lakes. Choose your adrenaline rush, from the tame Treetop zip at a maximum heights of 15 m to Zipline black, topping out at 52 m.

SKÅNE • BLEKINGE • SMÅLAND • ÖLAND

Free as a bird

Ottenby Nature Reserve on Öland's southern tip is one of Sweden's best bird locations. Every year around 25,000 birds are marked as they stop here on their way north or south. Take a guided tour to learn how and why the birds are being marked, and visit Sweden's tallest lighthouse Långe Jan, the Fågel Blå restaurant, and the Naturbutiken store. All three are open most of the year.

History by the sea

Spend a busy, exciting and educational day at the popular Naval Museum in Karlskrona, which has both classic and interactive exhibitions on the history of naval defence. The museum is set in a beautiful building and has an unbeatable view of the harbour and archipelago. In the boatyard is Kronans Repslagarbana, which is one of Karlskrona's oldest preserved buildings, Sweden's longest wooden building (300 metres), and one of the last of its kind in the world.

“A funky house with a cool Riviera feel” – this is how Bjerred’s Station has been described. The renovated station building with a unique interior now offers food and music. Famous Swedish artists perform here, and the menu has both classic dishes and wines from around the world.

TROLLSKOGEN NATURE RESERVE

Fantastic nature in nort h-east Öland North-east Öland offers one of Sweden’s most unique nature experiences. Trollskogen Nature Reserve looks like something out of a fairy tale; gnarled conifers that have been bent and twisted by the Baltic Sea winds form a grizzled forest overgrown with ivy. Along the beach is the Neptuni Field, a large field of shingles with more or less no vegetation that during the summer is lined by wild blueweed.

Archipelago and shellfish

Sweden's western archipelago is famous for its smooth granite outcrops, charming towns, and fantastic shellfish, especially shrimp, crabs and oysters.

Echoes of history

Visit historical fortresses such as Bohus, Karlsborg, Marstrand, Älvsborg and Varberg, as well as Läckö Castle at Lake Vänern, to experience both culture and adventure.

Sand beaches and beech forests

Halland offers shallow waters and sand beaches for swimming and sports along its coastline and rolling farmland and beech forests further inland.

Active landscape

Dalsland and Västergötland have lots of trails that crisscross through varying terrain, from deep forests and cycling on old railways to lake networks and archipelagos for kayaking.

Nature and culture

From Lake Vänern's shores and the iconic tabletop mountains at Kinnekulle, Billingen and Mösseberg to the cliffs at Skagerrak. This region is rich in nature but also history with its medieval churches and abbeys.

DESTINATION WEST

HALLAND • BOHUSLÄN • GOTHENBURG • DALSLAND • VÄSTERGÖTLAND

Lost in Vårgårda

Be mesmerized by the ancient Ornunga labyrinth. It sits on a hill in the forest approximately 10 km south-east of Vårgårda. It is of indeterminate age, and we can only guess what it was used for. Let your creativity flow!

Fun art cooperative

”Not Quite is a parrot in the forest. Not Quite is a silver thread in the rag board. Not Quite is a little bit of New York in the middle of the periphery.” This is how the art collective describe themselves. In other words, innovative art that can take any and all forms of expression. Stop by and see for yourself. Location: Fengersfors Bruk & Not Quite, Dalsland.

Vinga Lighthouse. Take a guided tour and learn about the exciting history of this lighthouse. You can also learn more about Evert Taube, a famous 20th century Swedish musician. He grew up on the island, and the sea inspired him and his unforgettable songs through the years. Boats leave from Lilla Bommen in Gothenburg.

Right wave-length

World Heritage Grimeton Radiostation celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2025. Sweden's first direct radio connection with the USA was transmitted from Grimeton, and the building was completed in 1924. Today, this key location from Sweden's industrial past is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a museum. The facility remains untouched and is the only functional electromechanical transmitter in the world today.

Taste a Bohuslän speciality – egg cheese

If you visit Bohuslän, you should also test the local speciality, egg cheese. While not all cafés serve it, it is well worth the detour to try it. Here are three places that offer egg cheese on their menu:

RESTAURANT KAJKANTEN, BOHUSLÄNS MUSEUM, UDDEVALLA. Explore the region through art exhibitions and activities, and end the visit with a farmto-table culinary experience and the region's speciality, egg cheese!

TAVLEBORDS HONUNGSGÅRD, HENÅN, ORUST.

Enjoy lunch or organic home-made baked goods at the café, which sits in a charming building from 1915. Relax in a genuine atmosphere with a view of Tegnebyslätten's fields and meadows.

CAFÉ NYFIKET, GÖTENE.

This gem of a garden café, with beautiful Kinnekulle as its backdrop, offers home-made baked goods, as well as the Ouroboro sculpture park and a smithy crafting unique jewellery and other items.

PRINS BERTILS TRAIL

From castle to coast

This 18 km hiking trail starts at the 400-year-old castle in the heart of Halmstad and winds its way along the coast all the way to Tylösand, where Prince Bertil, the duke of Halland, used to spend his summers. The trail is easy and offers spectacular views and impressive nature experiences. Opportunities to take a break for some coffee and ice cream pop up along the way.

The Borgmästargården café and bakery is housed in the old mayor’s residence in Falkenberg. Come for breakfast, lunch or a coffee break. The selection varies from day to day depending on the season and available produce. The café’s interior consists of solid materials, furniture and porcelain from famous designers. There is outside seating along Storgatan and in the sunny courtyard.

HISTORIC

OUTPOST

At Varberg Fortress, you stand on a historically crucial site that has helped people defend the area for far longer than the approximately 800 years that the fortress’s first stones have been in place. The high peninsula provides an excellent view of the Kattegat horizon, enabling early detection of foreign powers throughout history. In the 19th century, the military activity at the fortress ceased, and for decades, it housed life-sentenced prisoners instead. Today, the fortress is open to visitors and hosts both Halland’s Cultural History Museum and a café. The towering stone walls, moat, and views will transport you back in time with magical force.

Älgafallet waterfall is in the top north-west corner of Tanum Municipality and forms the border to Norway. It is the highest in Bohuslän County (46 m) and also Sweden’s third highest. An information sign describes the history of the border and the remains in the area. The waterfall is a popular destination in the spring and autumn when water levels are high. Solar-panel lamps also light the area in the evening, which adds an extra layer of charm. The waterfall is located along the Kuststigen and Bohusleden hiking trails.

CLIMBING THE WALLS

The design city of Borås has added a splash of color to life since 2014, when it hosted the No Limit® street art festival for the first time. One of the most notable results was the massive murals created by various artists, now adorning facades across the city. The festival and its artworks were a great success and were repeated several times in subsequent years. For those of us who weren’t lucky enough to see the works being created, the beautiful creations can still be enjoyed throughout the city. It’s a delightful walk through an urban landscape.

Castle life

The Mälardalen valley has many beautiful, wellpreserved castles and manors, which also help preserve and develop the region's food culture.

Nature and birdwatching

Omberg mountain and Tåkern lake in Östergötland are popular for their nature hikes and rich birdlife, offering lots of outdoor activities.

Cultural history

Uppsala is Sweden's academic stronghold and the location of Sweden's largest and most famous church, Uppsala Cathedral.

Bergslagen is a key part of Sweden's industrial past, with Sala Silver Mine and Skultuna Brass Works.

Experiencing the archipelago

There are thousands of islands in the Östergötland and Stockholm archipelago to explore. Göta Canal cuts through Östergötland via Lake Vättern and on westward.

Unique nature and beaches

Gotland's sea stacks, limestone landscape, beaches and shallow water form the region's unique nature. Gotland is also known for its excellent asparagus.

DESTINATION EAST

Wine tasting in Sörmland

At Selaöns Vingård between Mariefred and Strängnäs, visitors are enchanted by the story about one of Europe's most northerly vineyards. It was founded in 2019 and produces sparkling wine as well as rosé, still white wine and a red Nouveau wine. The vineyard's stocks include Solaris, Rondo, Souvignier Gris and Meunier. The winetasting includes a local cheese and charcuterie board.

Look up! In 2025, Millesgården on the island of Lidingö in Stockholm is celebrating Carl Milles' 150th birthday. In addition to the artist's home and studios and the fantastic view, the museum will also host an exhibition on what Carl Milles' art has meant to people across the country. The exhibition is called Lyft blicken! (Look Up!).

Hillforts in Gotland

One-tenth of Sweden's ancient hillforts are found on Gotland, and new ones are discovered every year. There are around 100, of which 85 are registered with the Swedish National Heritage Board. Why not set off on a road trip to explore them? But if you only have time to visit one, make it Torsburgen in Kräklingbo Parish.

Linné's green heritage

Unique swimming!

One of Sweden's most modern pools is located in the historic industrial area Munktellstaden in Eskilstuna. The facility offers a slide, a climbing wall, and a pool movie theater. The spectacular view of Eskilstuna River is particularly special, and it is also possible to rent SUPs to explore the city by water.

Carl von Linné was born in Uppsala, and he is still very much remembered here. Walk along the Linnéstigarna paths or visit his summer home in Hammarby. Linnéträdgården garden is home to many of the plants he grew. Which flower are you? Take the test, based on Linné's botany and Jung's psychology: linneuppsala.se/vilken-blomma-ar-du Available in Swedish and English.

VADSTENA

A creative history

The medieval settlement and Lake Vättern next door, then the beautiful plain landscape around the city. Vadstena has a special atmosphere. Old meets new. History is always present. There is a calmness here, but it is also a city that seethes with life during the summer. The events succeed each other. Big concerts in the castle grounds, opera in the castle and every Wednesday the nostalgia evenings when the area by the castle is filled with vehicles from all eras. Vadstena is a place to marvel at, visit, return to, enjoy and stay in.

STENDÖRREN NATURE RESERVE

Stendörren Nature Reserve is a popular destination along the coast between Nyköping and Trosa. It has several marked trails that promise exciting experiences. There is a lot to do here: swim from the cliffs, hike the trails, fish using old-fashioned nets, tour the nature centre with a guide, grill at one of the fire pits, and enjoy the view of the archipelago from the lookout tower. The nature centre has exhibitions on the Baltic Sea and a summer outdoor café. Discover Sörmland’s archipelago

WORTH A DETOUR!

VIBRANT ISLAND LIFE

During the summer, a parallel world comes to life off of Stockholm's coastline. The waters around the 30,000 islands and islets that make up the capital city's archipelago – the country's largest – teem with everything from kayaks and sailing dinghies to sailboats and yachts. If you don't have your own boat, simply hop onto one of the many archipelago ferries and rent a kayak on the mainland or at one of the many islands. Fjäderholmarna, Vaxholm and Gustavsberg are perfect for short visits, while Sandön, Möja and Grinda are examples of more remote islands that offer a different kind of calm. Spend the day on a blanket on isolated outcrops, eat dinner at a cosy archipelago restaurant, and watch for seals peeking up out of the water.

STRÖMSHOLM PALACE

The palace of horses

Many people associate Strömsholm, which lies next to Lake Mälaren, with horses. There has been a stud farm here since king Gustav Vasa´s days, and it was the home of the Swedish army’s riding school up until 1968. Today, horses have once again taken centre stage at Strömsholm, which hosts a specialised college university and high school, and every year major horse competitions are arranged on and around the palace grounds. The palace is open to the public during the summer, and there are walking paths and trails on and around the grounds.

MEDIEVAL TIMES IN OLD UPPSALA

During the Iron Age, a large and well-developed community existed around what is known as Uppsala Mounds. Among other things, there was a royal estate, and the site served as a power center for what came to be called Svealand. According to mythology and folklore, the mounds are burial sites for ancient Swedish kings, but it wasn’t until 1846 that an excavation took place, uncovering findings that confirmed parts of the mythology. Visit the site and the Gamla Uppsala Museum for a fascinating glimpse into medieval history.

Mountains

and national parks

Mid-Sweden offers easily accessible mountains, waterfalls, and beautiful deep forests, such as Fulufjället, Glaskogen, and Färnebofjärden National Park, known for its rich bird life.

Local craftsmanship

Hälsingland is known for its Hälsinge farms and vibrant local craftsmanship, such as woodworking and textile production – a tradition that extends into Värmland.

Lakes and waterways

Värmland and Dalarna are known for their lakes, including Lake Vänern and Lake Siljan, and offer boat trips ideal for both fishing and relaxation.

Culture and history

The provinces in mid-Sweden have a long tradition of farming and are often associated with Midsummer celebrations and folk costumes. Iconic artists such as Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson and Lars Lerin come from this region, and authors such as Selma Lagerlöf and Gustaf Fröding have played key roles in shaping Sweden's literary history.

DESTINATION MID

VÄRMLAND • ÖREBRO COUNTY • DALARNA • GÄSTRIKLAND • HÄLSINGLAND

Visit a Hälsinge farm – or seven!

Of the thousands of farms in the province, seven are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Hälsinge farmers, who earned their fortune on the forests and flax (linen) in the 1800s, took inspiration from castles and manors when they built their large, lavish homes. What makes these homes unique is that the Hälsinge farmers built more and larger rooms for social events than other farmers around the world, and there are more decorated interiors preserved in a residential setting here than anywhere else.

Join the baking team

Bon appetit in Nora!

A culinary adventure awaits in the wooden town of Nora.

• Knasboll (Crazy chocolate ball) at Café Da Capo

• Ogräspaj (Weed quiche) at Björk Kafé & Skafferi

• Bonnatösen (The country girl) Burger at Bonnatösens Mackor

The aroma of freshly baked flat bread is heavenly! Why not try making it yourself? At Rättviks Tunnbrödsbageri, you can help the bakers make Dalarna's signature bread. If you’re lucky, they might share the recipe for the local speciality “tuttul”. Take home some freshly baked bread made the old-fashioned way as well as a delicious memory for life.

Pick your wreck

There are around 20 shipwrecks preserved in the cold and oxygen-poor waters around Axmar Ironworks in Gästrikland. They are visible just below the surface in the shallow archipelago of the Bothnian Sea, along with remains from the ironworks' 300-year history. Visitors are welcome to explore them, whether by kayak, snorkelling or diving.

Riding the rails

Glide off on an easy but impressive adventure through the forests of Värmland – rail cycling! Start at the rail cycle station in Ängebäck and follow the old railway tracks through Degerfors and its surroundings. Stop at one of the cosy rest stops, found after 1.6, 7.5 and 10 km. The last rest stop in Degerfors is 12.2 km away at Däveln Lake, where you can swim or fish. There is also a BBQ area and a latrine. A trip to Håkanbol and back (7.5 km) takes 2–3 hours. Or continue on to Kristinehamn and Gullspång.

ROTTNEROS PARK

Lush garden with ties to The Saga of Gösta Berling

Rottneros Mansion is a unique flower and culture park that is closely tied to Selma Lagerlöf; it was her muse for Ekeby in The Saga of Gösta Berling. The park features several lush themed gardens and lots of sculptures. It also has several kids’ attractions, including Nils Holgersson’s adventure park and a cool pirate ship. There are also large grassy areas for picnicking and a beach for swimming. Outside the park’s gates in the old storytelling barn is the permanent summer stage for Västanå Theatre, which offers a wide range of performances.

SWEDISH MIDSUMMER

Midsummer is an old and honoured tradition in Sweden. The holiday celebrates the summer solstice and falls sometime during the period 20–26 June. Midsummer Eve always falls on a Friday, and it is on this day that the Midsummer pole is raised and decorated with flowers and leaves. Traditional music is played as both young and old dance around the pole. No Midsummer Eve is complete without herring, new potatoes and a delicious strawberry cake. The Midsummer holiday is celebrated throughout Sweden, and visitors do not need to travel far to find a local Midsummer celebration.

Northern lights and midnight sun

Northern Sweden offers natural phenomena such as the midnight sun and northern lights, attracting visitors year round.

Culture and history

Sápmi is the land of the Saami and stretches across country borders in Northern Scandinavia. Sápmi refers to both the Saami land and the Saami people and is a nation without borders, sharing a language, history and culture, such as reindeer husbandry.

Wilderness and mountains

Up here you will find vast wilderness and high mountains, from Vindelfjällen to Abisko National Park, ideal for adventures, hiking and skiing.

Rivers and fishing

There are many rivers, including Indalsälven, Pite Älv and Torneälven, that offer rapids, paddling and fishing. One special experience is fishing for whitefish at the Kukkolaforsen rapids. Sweden's traditional fermented herring originates from the High Coast region.

Coast and archipelago

The coast of Norrland stretches for 800 km and has long beaches and many lovely destinations, including World Heritage High Coast with its dramatic cliffs and archipelago, perfect for both nature and boat trips.

Mountain flora

Fjällbotaniska Trädgården in Hemavan is Sweden's highest – and one of the world's most northerly – botanical gardens. It lies 600 m above sea level and about 100 m below the tree line. It features 400–500 species, primarily plants native to the Swedish mountains but also some species from other mountainous areas around the world.

Geopark gives perspective

Goat's Cave, the Dead Falls and Nornan – names that awaken our curiosity. They are said to once have been home to both trolls and spirits. At Geopark Indalsälven, there is a focus on sustainability and nature preservation. The aim is to safeguard nature's inherent ability to inspire awe, humility and respect for the long history of this planet – not exactly a difficult task along the Indalsälven river.

Treat yourself at the deli. Eat locally at Skoogs Bistro in Funäsdalen, or buy charcuterie, meat, and vegetables from local farms at the deli. Fresh fish and shellfish from Åre Atlantfisk are also available for purchase.

In 1796, the Ragundasjön lake was emptied of its waters and a devastating fl ood wave rushed down the valley. In only four hours, the landscape was forever changed, and the Storforsen rapids fell silent and became Döda Fallet (”the dead fall”). Today, it is a popular tourist attraction.

ÖVERHOGDAL TAPESTRIES

The museum Överhogdals Forngård shares the fantastic history behind one of Europe’s strangest textiles, the Överhodal Tapestries. The textiles were found in the vestry of the Överhogdal Church in 1909, but they were then dated to the end of the Viking era and the beginning of the Middle Ages, around 1000–1100. The originals are now in Jamtli in Östersund, but an exact copy is on exhibit in Överhogdal.

CROSS THE ARCTIC CIRCLE

By crossing the Arctic Circle, you will have passed the magical line that allows you to experience both the winter and summer solstices – the periods of the year when the sun does not rise or set, respectively, for 24 hours. Commemorative plaques and information boards are interspersed along the Arctic Circle, for example just south of Jokkmokk on E45. The Arctic Circle passes through Norway, Finland, Russia, USA (Alaska), Canada, Greenland, Iceland and Sweden.

Höga Åsens Camping is a quiet family campsite set in a recreational area with its own beach. At our campsite you can swim, fish, cycle, hike or just relax. Kids activities include a kids´club, playground and ice cream buffet. And if you need a break from the sun and swimming, just jump on the bus to Stockholm for sightseeing, shopping and entertainment. Welcome!

7 Open – some campsites have cottages that can be booked year-round, even if the rest of the campsite is closed. For campsites that are open year-round, it is recommended that guests double-check exact opening hours before arrival during the off-peak season.

8 Many campsites offer other types of accommodation than just camping pitches. Number of cottages can vary from fully equipped cottages, apartments or static caravans with shower and WC to simpler cabins with access to a service building for shower and WC. Number of rooms may mean that there are rooms with a hostel- or hotel-standard that are available to book.
