LA PROGRAMACIÓ DEL FESTIVAL, QUE INCLOU DIFERENTS COMISSARIS, ARTISTES I INSTITUCIONS, LOCALS I INTERNACIONALS, ES PRESENTA TANT EN ESPAIS INSTITUCIONALS COM EN GALERIES, CENTRES INDEPENDENTS, ASSOCIACIONS I BARS, ENTRE D’ALTRES.

PROGRAMACIÓ

L’SCREEN Festival 2013 s’estructura a partir de dos grans àmbits de treball. Sound & Vision Aquest eix temàtic busca explorar els nombrosos creuaments de camins entre la videocreació i la música, emfatitzant les maneres en què es retroalimenten i el seu impacte en l’imaginari col·lectiu. Qüestiona també les relacions convencionals de subordinació del so respecte a allò visual. Des del punt de vista històric, han existit relacions fecundes entre les arts visuals i la música. Al llarg del segle XX, particularment des dels anys seixanta, les maneres, els comportaments i les iconografies de la música pop i els videoclips han estat presents en les pràctiques artístiques dels videocreadors contemporanis. Poetics & Politics L’aspecte polític forma part dels processos de videocreació

contemporanis, tant en relació amb elements de la dimensió sensible del subjecte com amb l’interès per inscriure i promoure noves subjectivitats. Moltes d’aquestes accions, intenten establir una veu de resistència davant les demandes funcionalistes del sistema econòmic i polític imperant; encarnen el desig de transformar les realitats contingents del present; exploren les diferents possibilitats del procés artístic; i utilitzen la videocreació com a eina per a l’emancipació dels subjectes. A més, com a novetat, incorpora tres rutes comissariades per agents convidats pel festival a pensar una programació especial: Equipo re, Estudio Nómada i Kika Nicolela.

THE FESTIVAL’S PROGRAMME, PRESENTED IN VARIOUS VENUES THROUGHOUT THE CITY, IS GENERATED BY INVITING INTERNATIONAL PLATFORMS, CURATORS AND INSTITUTIONS TO COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL ACTORS, EACH OF THEM INVOLVED AND PROACTIVE WITH REGARDS TO MOVING IMAGE. PROGRAMME SCREEN Festival 2013 is structured around two main themes.

Sound & Vision This theme seeks to explore the numerous crossing lines between music and video, highlighting the mutual influences and the impact of these on the collective imagination. It also questions the conventional subordinate relationship of sound to image, which has

been enforced by hegemonic western culture. From the historical point of view, visual arts and music have maintained a fruitful relationship throughout the 20th century; since the 1960s in particular, the modes, attitudes, and iconography of pop music and music videos have been present in the artistic process of contemporary video creators. Poetics & Politics There is a strong political aspect in contemporary artistic practices which is linked both to the sensitive dimension of the subject and to the interest in registering and promoting new subjectivities. Many of these practices are trying to establish a voice of resistance to the functional demands of the dominant economic and political system. They embody the desire to transform our present realities while exploring new possibilities of art, and use video creation as a tool for the emancipation of the subject. Also, for the first time, the festival includes three curated routes by different curators: Equipo re, Estudio Nómada and Kika Nicolela, who have been invited to present a special programme.

For the first time, FMAC is presenting abroad a specific selection of audiovisual pieces from its public collection, one of the biggest and most important video collections in Europe. TWIN relata el procés del projecte Twin Tastes & Tongues que Screen Projects va comissionar a Miralda per al Pavelló de Barcelona de la 9ª Biennal de Shanghai, inaugurada l’octubre de 2012. Partint del fet que Barcelona i Shanghai són ciutats agermanades, TWIN explora els imaginaris,els rituals, les polítiques i les tradicions de cada lloc a través del menjar. El resultat és una cartografia visual des d’on sorgeixen similituds, diferències i processos agermanats i globals.

TWIN is an exhibition portraying the work process of Miralda’s Twin Taste & Tongues project for the Barcelona Pavilion for the 9th Shanghai Biennale which opened in October 2012. Taking the fact that Barcelona and Shanghai are twin cities as a departing point, TWIN is an exploration of both cities’ imaginaries, traditions, rituals and politics through its food culture and eating habits, resulting in a visual cartography through which similarities, differences and globalization twinning processes are further explored.

The exhibition, based on one of the most important artists in the history of cinema, explains Méliès’ cultural, aesthetic and technical roots, and shows how the origins of his world are found in the origins of cinema: animated shadows, magic lantern, phantasmagoria, chronophotography, illusion, magic and fantasy. The rhythm of the exhibition is set by projections, operating cinematographic apparatus and unique items such as Méliès’ first camera and original costumes from Trip to the Moon. Pasolini was not happy with integrating the city as a backdrop to his novels and his films, but rather he “refounded” Rome through literature and film. Tierra Sin Males és un vídeo giratori, en espiral. Una gran esfera de vidre rodola amunt i avall sobre una llosa de fusta balancejada sobre un suport triangular. Clavada dins l’esfera hi ha una imatge d’un senyal de trànsit de l’autopista prop de la frontera entre Mèxic i els Estats Units, que alerta els conductors per evitar xocar amb els immigrants que creuen corrent en la seva fugida. La imatge es distorsiona amb el moviment pendular de l’esfera.

Tierra Sin Males is a spinning, spiraling and fracturing video piece. A large glass globe rolls tensely back and forth on a track over a central fulcrum. Embedded in the sphere is an image which is the reflection of a highway sign near the Mexico/US border warning drivers not to hit immigrants as they flee along the road. As the globe rolls up the track, tilting almost over the edge, it contorts and distorts the image inside.

The Radiant és una peça cinemàtica, comissionada al 2012 per dOCUMENTA (13), que explora les seqüeles del terratrèmol que va desencadenar el tsunami i va causar milers de morts i la fusió a la planta nuclear de Fukushima Daiichi, l’11 de Març del 2011. La peça, que compta amb la dificultat de representar les conseqüències d’una pluja radioactiva, ofereix una ullada a la forma i la presència d’una entitat oculta i a les seves manifestacions abstractes a través d’allò visual.

Commissioned as part of dOCUMENTA (13) in 2012, The Radiant explores the aftermath of March 11, 2011, when the Tohoku earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed many thousands and caused the partial meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Burdened by the difficult task of representing the invisible aftermath of nuclear fallout, this cinematic document offers glimpses into the shape and presence of an unseen entity and its abstract manifestation through visual phenomena.

The video art tells the story of a lost kid in the middle of the salt desert at night that after a magical encounter with a praying mantis will be saved with the dances and music of this elegant insect. sculptures, various pop-up sculptures and 40 kg of soil. Visuals and lights are projected on the sculptures reacting to Amon Tobin‘s track Piece of Paper. Vanish is an experimental journey through music and video that was defined by choosing mundane objects around the artists’ environment in order to build models and record visuals as well as sounds from them.

Ye Shanghai is a music-visual performance, a work of live cinema. The artist’s performance will be based on footage of Shanghai’s refugee ghettos during the Second World War, and the song Nights of Shanghai, from 1940. treballs incideixen de manera crítica en la configuració de la “ciutat” actual, entesa com un entramat de control biopolític. Hi participaran artistes i altres agents amb els quals entaular un diàleg.

Activitat d’observació i de debat al voltant del tema Gentrificació: Ciutat i exclusió, amb la participació d’associacions i agents vinculats a aquesta temàtica. / Activity of observation and debate around the theme Gentrification; City and Exclusion, with the participation of associations and agents related to this field.

This route proposes a journey through for contemporary forms of “body politics”: immigration regulation (Daniela Ortiz & Xose Quiroga); visibility of seropositive bodies (Guillermo Moscoso); the presence of the precarious body which states the social conflict (Pilar Quinteros); and the urban gentrification process (Virginie Manuel / PEI). Some of these works have a critical impact in the configuration of the current city, understood as a network of biopolitical control. The route will be followed by some artists and other agents that will hold a debate on these topics.

Canuda, 6  93 343 61 21 www.ateneubcn.org Aquesta pel·lícula de ficció fou rodada a París l’any 1974 i interpretada per Jaume Xifra i Pierre Restany. És una crítica lúdica, contundent i burlesca; un atac ferotge contra la

incongruència de la guerra. La música adquireix aquí un paper predominant amb un ampli repertori de cançons de la soldadesca i s’inclouen discursos i documents fotogràfics originals de la Primera Guerra Mundial. A més, si repassem el ventall d’actors, descobrirem noms que evoquen els ambients artístics que Antoni Miralda i Benet Rossell van freqüentar a París a principis dels anys setanta. This feature film was shot in Paris in 1974 and interpreted by Jaume Xifra and Pierre Restany. It is a fun, forceful and burlesque criticism, a fierce attack against the incongruity of war, in which the music takes on a prominent role with a wide repertoire of songs from the soldiery. It also includes speeches, original photos and documents from World War I. In the cast list, we find names of artists from the Parisian scene that Rossell and Miralda frequented in the early 70s.

El projecte es presenta a travers d’espais autogestionats del Poble Sec i del Raval Equipo re is a platform for the articulation of the art space and the critical action; one of their fields of AL is “body politics”, understood as the intervention DIAGON configuration of the borders for bio political management and the resistant strategies that confront them. The project is presented through self-managed platforms in Raval and in Poble Sec.

Facing the systematic dismantling and redefinition of public policies and the changing

work paradigm in the field of culture; the current context requires new attitudes towards the cultural production. Firmly rooted in the question What about collaboration?, LOOP STUDIES presents 3 days of round tables and professional case studies, aiming to shine a light on new horizons of creation, production and administration built around the concept of collaboration. SDR és un espai per construir coneixement a partir de la interrelació entre diverses matèries i disciplines: art i arquitectura, estètica i composició, disseny gràfic i comunicació visual, estudis visuals i representació, vídeo i espai. El coneixement es genera a partir de les activitats d’aprenentatge: representar i analitzar fotogràficament la ciutat, captar i representar l’espai urbà amb el vídeo. SOR SYSTEMS OF REPRESENTATION (WWW.SALLEURL.EDU / SDR) SDR is taught in the School of Architecture La Salle since the academic year 19992000. La càmera com a escriptura, de l’artista Isabel María investiga i analitza, des del propi llenguatge audiovisual, el procés creatiu de tres artistes i les seves obres: Bill Viola (The Passing), Alan Berliner (Nobody’s Business) i Agnès Varda (Els glaneurs et la glaneuse). El resultat són tres documentals: Temps del trànsit, amb Bill Viola, Una mica de tots, amb Alan Berliner, i Espigolant a una espigadora, amb Agnès Varda que mostren una aproximació als artistes i a les seves obres, al mateix temps que retraten l’ésser humà a través dels seus gestos i de la improvisació.

(Nobody’s Business) and Agnès Varda (Les glaneurs et the glaneuse) investigates and analyzes the creative processes of each of these artists and their audiovisual languages from their own language. The result are three documentaries: Transit Times with Bill Viola, Some of everyone with Alan Berliner, and Gleaning a gleaner with Agnès Varda. The documentaries depict an approximation to the artists and their works, while portraying at the same time the human being through gestures and improvisation.

THE WORKSHOPS AT MINISCREEN ARE ALL ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN AND AIM TO ENHANCE THEIR CREATIVITY AND HELP THEM THINK IN NEW WAYS ABOUT WHAT ART IS AND HOW IT IS MADE. MINISCREEN 2013 WILL FOCUS ON SENSORIAL EXPERIENCES AND HOW WE CAN USE ALL OUR SENSES TO EXPERIENCE ART. Smells also travel through space, just like light and the sun, and they can also tell stories. OLOR VISUAL MINI SCREENING OLFACTIU (en col·laboració amb la col·lecció d’art Olor Visual) Una proposta d’Olor Visual del perfumista Ernesto Ventós. Videoart i essències s’uneixen en una ruta “artístic-olfactiva” ideada per als més petits per desvetllar percepcions inèdites: “A què fa olor l’arc de Sant Martí?” –“Fa olor de festa al cel”. OLFACTORY MINI SCREENING (in collaboration with

the Collection Olor Visual) A proposal by Olor Visual, the art collection by the perfumist Ernesto Ventós. Videoart and essences will come together for an “artistic-olfactory” route designed especially for children with the intention of revealing unknown perceptions. “What does a rainbow smell of?” – “A celebration in heaven”.

DIBUIX SOBRE PROJECCIÓ (en col·laboració amb British Summer) Un taller d’immersió artística, on utilitzarem el projector com a eina. Es projectaran fotos de paisatges, objectes o espais sobre una tela que després es pintarà. Serà un exercici creatiu i educatiu. Els nens i nenes es podran endur les obres a casa!
