How to get to Flåm Whether you arrive by boat, bus, train, private car or bike, getting to Flåm means a journey filled with beautiful and dramatic nature. Flåm is located along the E16, which is the main road between Oslo and Bergen. From these cities you can also take the train on the scenic Bergen line, followed by a spectacular train journey with the world famous Flåm Railway. From Bergen you can also take an express boat on the Sognefjord to Flåm. The nearest international airport is Bergen Flesland Airport, 2,5 hours from Flåm and for national arrivals by air, Sogndal Haukåsen Airport is approx. 1 hour from Flåm.

01 World Heritage Cruise Nærøyfjord Fjord Cruise in the UNESCO World Heritage Area Nærøyfjorden. Explore one of the most popular fjord areas in Norway on a fjord cruise in World Heritage landscape. The narrow and spectacular fjord Nærøyfjorden is surrounded by steep hillsides with snow-covered mountain tops 1400 metres above sea level. You will experience cascading waterfalls and the idyllically located settlements along the fjord. The area is included on the UNESCO World Heritage list and considered to be among the most scenic fjord areas in the world. The roundtrip includes a one way fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen or vice versa, and a shuttle bus return to the starting point.

A popular sightseeing tour with bus from Flåm, via Aurland, to the spectacular viewpoint Stegastein, 650 metres above sea level overlooking the fjord and mountains. From Stegastein you get panorama view of the fjord landscapes with plenty of opportunities for taking that unique holiday picture worth sharing. The Aurlandsvegen road from the center of Aurland to the viewpoint Stegastein is open all year, but the rest of the mountain road to Lærdal is closed during the winter. A travel guide folder will be handed out on the bus.

03 Visit to Aurland Shoe factory Experience the artisans of shoe making through Aurlandskoen. The Aurland Shoe has been produced since the 1930s, and today the Aurland Shoe Factory is the only remaining manufacturer of this traditional shoe. Meet the artisans of shoe making, follow the steps of the production process and discover interesting elements of the historic craft. Make sure to take home with you a pair of proper shoes as a souvenir. The tour includes bus t/r Aurland – Flüm.

04 Historic Hotel and local cuisine Every historical hotel has its tale of being haunted or of friendly ghosts, and thus Fretheim has more to offer than solely accommodation. Join us on a historical walk through the hotel, our rose garden or cultural park. We have guided historical walks of the hotel every day. You will of course have to taste one of our local specialties in our restaurant. If you wish you can combine a historical walk with an introduction to how to prepare salmon dishes, followed by enjoying these dishes for a 2-3 course lunch.

05 World Heritage Cruise Undredal Fjord Cruise in World Heritage Landscape with a stop in the village of Undredal. Explore the Nærøyfjorden World Heritage area on a fjord cruise and visit Undredal, a village known for its tasteful goat cheese and small stave church. You can explore the village on your own, join a guided tour to Undredal stave church and learn how the local goat cheese is made, which of course includes cheese samples for you to taste as well as the possibilities to buy a piece of this popular cheese. The roundtrip includes fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen, with a 2 hour stop in Undredal and a shuttle bus from Gudvangen back to Flåm.

We wish all cycling enthusiasts welcome to cycle Rallarvegen from Finse to Flåm this summer. Stay at our historical hotel, experience the famous Flåm Railway and cycle one of the most popular cycle routes in Norway that takes you from the high mountain to the fjord. Rallarvegen was handmade and used as a transportation route during the building of the Bergen railway from 1895-1902. The road it self is an attraction that brings you through a fantastic highland area starting at 1000 meters above sea level, peaking at 1300 meters before descending to the fjord. Our package deal includes 2 nights with full board, packed meal, train ticket on the Flåm Railway and bike rental. Available from 20th of July – 30th of September.

07 Experience Fretheim Cultural Park and Bakkastova Fretheim Cultural Park is a 1600 metres circular trail in natural surroundings, facilitated with histories, viewpoints, benches and seating areas. The park treasure is Bakkastova, an old cotters farm from the early 1800s and a house typical for the Sognefjorden area building traditions. Today Bakkastova is a cultural café and an exhibition for local food and handicraft. The cultural park has an activity area and a quiz trail for children and families. You can also say hi to goat babies. The park is open for everyone and is located behind the hotel.

08 Take the route down the steep and winding Stalheimskleiva road Experience the magnificent views of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Nærøydalen valley and the drive down the steep and winding road Stalheimskleiva passing the waterfalls Sivlefossen and Stalheimsfossen. The sightseeing tour takes you by bus from Flåm, includes a short stop at Stalheim Hotel for the panorama views of Nærøydalen, before the return to Flåm by driving down the hairpin bends of Stalheimskleiva road and through the Nærøydalen valley. A travel guide folder will be handed out on the bus.

The Flåm Railway invites you on a spectacular train journey with a panoramic view of some of the wildest and most striking examples of Norwegian fjord and mountain lanscape. In less than an hour the train ascends 865 metres from Flåm to Myrdal going through 20 tunnels. The Flåm Railway is one of steepest railway lines in the world on normal tracks with almost 80% of the distance with a gradient of 5,5%. The National Geographic Traveler Magazine has named the Flåm Railway as one of the top 10 train journeys in Europe. To learn more about the Flåm Railway’s history and its technological development, visit the Flåm Railway Documentation Centre in Flåm. It is located in the yellow building next to the Flåm Railway and has free entrance for everyone.

10 Cultural walk in Aurland This sightseeing tour gives you a close meeting with cultural heritage and activities in Aurland - a new tour from 2013! The tour includes bus t/r Aurland - Flåm, a visit to the studio of the glasblowing artist Merete Rein, a visit to the stone church Vangen kyrkje and the Aurland Shoefactory. Merete Rein has worked with glass since 2006 and in 2012 she opened a glassblowing studio in the center of Aurland. Vangen Church dates back to 1202 and is the largest stonechurch of the 7 stonechurches in the region of Sogn og Fjordane.
