«Where your own history is created» ”Historic Hotels and Restaurants” is a unique organisation, counting many of Norway’s most charming hotels and restaurants as its members. A membership is considered a stamp of quality for the company, but involves continual, high demands and expectations for quality, architecture and the preservation of historical values. The organisation is internationally rooted in Historic Hotels of America, which are supported by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. As a member of Historic Hotels and Restaurants, our aim is to create new stories for our guests, through thrilling experiences with history as a backdrop. We hope that these stories will continue to unfold in the memories of our guests, long after their return home. Although each member of “The Historic” has a distinctive character, they also have several features in common: a warm welcome, an interesting history, traditional design and décor, good service, a friendly atmosphere and a high standard throughout. Historia the history Året er 1870, og Lord Wigram frå England får leige Flåmselva. Dei fyrste utlendingane som kom til Flåm var nok laksefiskarar, for elva var rik på fjellaure og laks. Dette lokka mang ein velståande engelskmann og seinare ivrige fiskeentusiastar frå Bergens-området. Fiskarane oppheldt seg på garden til Christen Fretheim – ein kjempe å sjå til og ein drivande kar. Han tok over garden i 1879, i 1890 starta han postkontor, og i 1895 starta han skipsekspedisjonen. Dei som var innlosjerte på Fretheim likte seg godt på garden, og det vart snart trong for eit hotel. Det fyrste huset vart på folkemunne kalla Engelskvillaen og vart snart fylt av laksefiskarar, turistar og anleggsfolk. Det vart so stor etterspurnad av vogner og skyssfolk, at Christen opna skysstasjon i 1902, med 14 hestar i stallen og 10 faste skysskarar. I 1909 kom Marthe Fretheim, Christen sitt syskenborn, for å hjelpe til ved hotellet. Ho var makalaus flink og tok snart over kommandoen ute som inne. Møkjakjerrer framfor trappa og grisebøtter på tunet var detaljar som Christen ikkje hadde tid til å bry seg med, men det gjorde Marthe… Marthe var ei venleg dame, med sans for hagearbeid og det gjekk fort gjetord om den vakre hagen ved hotellet. Gjestene vart også kjend med Marthes omsorg, når skysskaravanane drog oppver fjellet i 10-15 stolkjerrer på rad vart gjestene kledd i avispapir, surra utanpå med lange strikkesjal og putta i skunnposar med varmeflaske. Marthe Fretheim stelte godt med både gjester og personale. Christen Fretheim døyde i 1916, men Marthe vart værande ved hotellet resten av sitt liv – ja endå lenger om me skal tru dei som bur og arbeider ved hotellet. Det vert fortalt at Marthe framleis går sine rundar kvar natt for å sjå at alt er i orden.

In 1870, Lord Wigram leased the fishing rights to the Flåm river. The first foreign tourists that came to Flåm were avid sports fishermen, lured by the large salmon and trout in the river. Many wealthy Englishmen followed Lord Wigram’s example, and later wealthy Bergeners also came to enjoy the area’s excellent fishing. It was not uncommon for a lucky angler to catch ten salmon on a good day. These fishermen often stayed at the farm of Christen Fretheim, the richest man in the village, who was enterprising and physically imposing. He had taken over the farm in 1879; in 1890 he established a post office, and five years later he started a shipping freight service. The guests enjoyed the hospitality of Fretheim Farm, and soon a hotel was built to cater to their needs. Not surprisingly, the villagers referred to the first building of Fretheim Farm as the English Villa. Soon, the hotel rooms were being booked by eager fishermen, tourists and construction workers. So great was the demand for transportation that in 1902 Christen Fretheim opened a posting inn. He employed ten full-time coachmen and had 14 horses in his stall. In 1909, Marthe Fretheim came to assist her cousin Christen. She was an excellent organiser and soon took charge of tasks inside and outside the hotel. Christen had little time or concern for details such as feeding the farm’s pigs or getting rid of manure, but fortunately Marthe managed such essential tasks with a skilled hand. She enjoyed gardening, and her hotel garden soon became renowned. The guests keenly appreciated Marthe’s hospitality and good care. When the caravan of coaches carried 10–15 guests up the mountain, Marthe had made sure that a layer of insulating newspapers was tied around their clothes, and that each of them was equipped with a hot water bottle. Marthe Fretheim took great care to ensure the comfort of each of her guests, and in the evening she would guide them up to their rooms, candle in hand. She treated her employees with the same care and respect. Although Christen Fretheim died in 1916, Marthe stayed on at the hotel the rest of her life. Well, some believe she still has a hand in making sure the hotel is friendly and well run. Legend has it that she makes a round every night, seeing that all is well with the guests at her beloved hotel.

Er baren i 3. etasje stengt ta kontakt med restauranten eller lobbybaren. Bank Aurland Sparebank har filial ved sidan av stasjonsbygningen ved Flåm hamn. Beskjeder Beskjeder formidlas gjennom resepsjonen. Bibliotek Me har eit bibliotek i den historiske delen av hotellet som er kaldt opp etter den lokale forfattaren Per Sivle. Sivlebiblioteket har bøker berre på nynorsk, samt ein flott utstilling av gjenstandar brukt på hotellet gjennom tidene. Butikkar I Flåm sentrum finner du suvenirbutikker med stort utvalg samt en dagligvarehandel med apotek og post.

Frukost Frukost serveras i restauranten i 2. etasje frå kl 07.00-10.00

Resepsjonen: Resepsjonen er bemanna 24 timer i døgnet 7 dagar i veka.

Frisør Frisørsalong finner du ved sidan av resepsjonen.

Miljø Fretheim Hotel har vore eit miljøfyrtårn sidan 2006, og me jobbar kontinuerleg med å vere ei miljøvenleg bedrift. Noko av miljøarbeidet me gjer, er å sortere søppel, redusere strømforbruk, redusere talet på leveringar med bil/lastebil, samt gjenbruk av gamle møblar. Me nyttar òg mest mogleg lokale leverandørar på mat og andre produkt. Kortreist mat er fortida populært, men for oss har det vore naturleg heilt sidan starten! Parkering Husets gjester parkerer fritt ved sida av Hotellets eldste del, parkering er skiltet.

Emergency Exits In each room there is a map showing all the emergency exits. They are all marked with lights. Please, also consult the safety information on page 20.

Allergies All rooms are non-smoking. Smoking in the room will give you a fee of NOK 3000, - per day. All our rooms, except the rooms in the 1st floor are allergy friendly. If you have food allergies of any kind, please notify your waiter.

Environment Fretheim Hotel is proud to be an environmental friendly hotel and is certified as an Eco Lighthouse, which is a strict Norwegian certification program. Our certification confirms that we have carried out measures that have resulted in: reduced energy consumption, reduced waste, sorting and recycling of waste, minimised need for transport and so on. We use more environmentally friendly products and services, we can document that our operations are environmentally friendly and we satisfy the requirements for documenting environmentally friendly management. We also take pride in serving our guests food that emphasises local and organic ingredients.

Breakfast Breakfast is served in the restaurant on the 1st floor between 7 and 10 a.m. Copying services Please contact the reception if you have anything you need to copy. Departure Check out by 11 a.m. Doctor/Dentist There is a Doctor and a Dentist in our community center in Aurland about 10 km from the hotel. Luggage We offer luggage service. Please book in the reception ahead of your arrival or departure. We also have a luggage room behind the reception where you can store your luggage. You use the luggage storage facilities at your own risk. Library We have a library in the historical part of the hotel. The library has mainly Norwegian books, but there is also a shelf with books with different languages. If you want to leave one of your own books behind, you can take another one with you from this shelf. The library also serves as a kind of museum, telling the story of the local author Per Sivle and the history of the hotel. Messages Messages are conveyed through the reception.

Fax services Please contact the reception if you need to use a fax.

Parking You are welcome to park beside the old part of the hotel. The parking are free of charge.

Hairdresser There is a hairdresser on the ground floor, next to the reception.

Reception The reception is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Dial 5000.

Info-TV You will find updated information and opening hours for our facilities at our info-TV, channel no 1. There are not TVs in the historical part of the hotel, so if you are staying in one of these rooms, do not hesitate to contact the reception if you have any questions.

Safe/Valuables Valuables can be stored in the hotel guest safe at the reception. This is available 24 hours a day. Beyond this service, the hotel does not take responsibility for lost items.

Internet The entire hotel has wireless internet for free use. At the reception, there are computers that are available free of charge for our guests. You can get username and password from the reception. Ironing and Laundry A Laundry room is available on the 1st floor next to the reception. Here you will find a washing machine, a dryer and ironing set available for self service. Open 24 hours a day.

Matopplevingar Kortreist mat har alltid vorte servert på hotellet, som er naturleg når me kan få både kjøt som spekemat, lam, reinsdyr og hjort, fjellaure, kvit og brun geitost, øl og cider, grønsaker og frukt frå dei mange og gode lokalprodusentane i kommunen. Restauranten vår ligg i 2. etasje i glasbygget, med utsikt mot fjord og fjell. Her vert det servert frukost, lunsj og middag. Me kan freiste med middagsbuffet i høgsesongen, samt ein spanande meny med lokale råvarer. I Ladyen Pub vert det i sommarsesongen servert smårettar, heimelaga kaker, ulike kaffisortar og kald drikke ute i hagen. Ladyen Pub har òg god stemning på Afterbike i helgene i Rallarvegsesongen. I Lobbybaren serverer me kaker, smårettar og god drikke heile året. Selskap På Fretheim Hotel kan me ynskje velkomen til bryllaup, dåp, konfirmasjon, åremålsdag, firmafest, årsmøte, blåtur, syklubb og alt anna som kan feirast. I tillegg til restauranten har me staselege festsalar til både store og små selskap. Me har fleire store festsalar som er elegante og smakfulle, og for dei som ynskjer eit litt mindre selskap kan me tilby fleire av dei små stovene for middagsservering. Food experiences and restaurants The chefs at Fretheim Hotel are widely respected for their use of the finest local ingredients in the dishes they prepare. Fortunately our area has a wealth of quality-minded producers, providing everything from cured meat, lamb and mutton, venison and reindeer meat, fresh trout from mountain lakes, white and brown goat cheese, locally brewed cider and beer, and locally grown fruit and vegetables. Our restaurant is situated on the 1st floor in the glass building, with an amazing view towards the fjord and mountains. This is where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. We serve a large dinner buffet during the high season in the summer, and we also have a tasteful set menu based on local ingredients, as well as a lunch menu. In Ladyen Pub we serve small dishes, homemade cakes and different coffees and cold beverages in the garden in the summer season. The Ladyen Pub also invites to AfterBike in the weekends and in the Navvies Road season. In the Lobby Bar we serve cakes, small dishes and tasteful beverages all year. Special occasions Fretheim Hotel is known for hosting many kinds of special occasions. Wedding, christening or confirmation, a birthday or anniversary and memorial service are some of the occasions we are managing. Fretheim Hotel offers intimate lounges for smaller dinner parties, and we have banquet halls for big occasions and many guests.

Our meeting and conference facilities are located in the historical part of the hotel. In the Marthe Room you can relax with a cup of coffee and mingle between sessions while our open-hearth fireplaces help to induce peace of mind and a friendly, relaxing atmosphere. Those in need for a quiet moment can sneak off upstairs to the Per Sivle Library. In addition to the historical atmosphere we offer modern technical equipments in all of our conference rooms and we can seat anything from 2-170 people. I over 100 år har historiske, elegante og stilfulle omgjevnader danna råma rundt storslåtte bryllaup på Fretheim Hotel. Med spektakulær utsikt mot fjord og fjell, kortreiste smakar og historisk atmosfære ligg alt til rette for ei ugløymeleg oppleving.

For kyrkjeleg vigsle kan du velje mellom fire fantastiske kyrkjer, der tre av dei gir mogelegheit for båtskyss, medan hesteskyss kan arrangerast til ei. Det er òg mogeleg å arrangere humanetisk vigsel inne på hotellet. Den lekre foajeen passar utmerka til samling før og etter middag. Ei flott steintrapp fører ut frå foajeen til den store hotellhagen som om våren og sommaren er full av blomar, rosebusker, epletre og stiar. På fine dagar kan velkomstdrinken nytast i hagen! Bankett- og konferanseavdelinga ligg i den historiske delen av hotellet, og her kan me dekke på til 100 personar ved runde bord, langbord eller hestesko. Bryllaupskoordinator Om ynskjeleg så kan me ta oss av heile bryllaupsplanlegginga. Vår eigen bryllaupskoordinator tek seg av alt frå meny- og vinval, til bordoppsett og pynting. Me har god dialog med brudeparet. Prøvesmaking av meny og gratis brudesuite er noko av det me tilbyr ved store bryllaup!

For more than 100 years historic, elegant and tasteful surroundings have been the backdrop for weddings at Fretheim Hotel. With spectacular views towards the fjord and mountains, local tastes and historical atmosphere everything is in place for an experience of a life time.. We have four churches nearby where we can offer boat transport to three of the churches and horse and carriage transport to one. If you wish to have a humanist ceremony, this can be arranged inside the hotel.

The gorgeous foyer is perfect for mingling before and after dinner. A great stone staircase leads from the foyer into the large hotel garden that in spring and summer is full of flowers, rose bushes, apple trees and paths. On sunny days you can enjoy the aperitif in the garden! Our historic banquet and conference department seats 100 people at round tables, long tables or horseshoe-shaped seating. Wedding Coordinator If required, we can take assist with your wedding planning. Our dedicated wedding coordinator will take care of everything from the menu, food and drinks, flowers and decoration. We have a close dialogue with the couple from all the way, even if they live far from Fl책m. Tasting of the menu and complimentary bridal suite is one of the things we offer at larger weddings! Fretheim Hotel er eit gamalt hotell, den eldste delen er frå 1850-åra. Betydelege utbyggingar har vorte utført i fleire omgangar, den siste i år 2000. For å ivareta våre gjesters tryggleik er hotellet utstyrt med eit sprinklaranlegg som vert utløyst ved høg temperatur. Alle rom og område har sprinklaranlegg. Røykdetektorar og brannvarslingsklokker er plassert ut i heile hotellet. Me vil gjere deg som gjest merksam på at detektorane er sensitive, og kan løysas ut av for eksempel damp frå baderommet. Me ber difor om du let att døra til baderommet ved dusjing. Skulle ein reell brannsituasjon oppstå, vil dette varslast med vedvarande ringing i alarmklokkene. Me ber deg om då å forlate rommet med ein gong og at du nyttar den næraste rømingsveg. Felles samlingsstad er på parkeringsplassen på framsida av hotellet. Det er kortlåsar på alle dører. Dette gjer tryggleiken for deg som gjest betre, då me kan lese av låsane og identifisere nøkkelkort dersom dette skulle være nødvendig. Kortlesaren er innstilt med ein tilbakerømningsfunksjon, dvs. at døra vert låst automatisk først etter 1 minutt når du går inn eller ut av rommet.

Within close proximity of your door, you will find a map of the room and the nearest emergency exits. We encourage all off our guests to make themselves familiar with the relevant escape routes and emergency exits. All the emergency exits are marked with international emergency signs. Fretheim Hotel is an old hotel where the oldest part is from the 1850’s. Additions have been done to the building several times, the last in year 2000. To ensure the safety of our guests, the hotel is equipped with a sprinkler system, which is triggered by excessive temperature change. The system covers all the rooms and areas in all buildings. There are smoke detectors and fire alarms throughout the hotel. Please note that the smoke detectors are highly sensitive and may be trigged by steam from the bathroom. Therefore, please keep the bathroom door closed while showering. If a genuine fire should arise, you will be alerted by continual chiming. In such an event, please leave your room immediately and use the relevant escape route. The meeting place is at the parking lot in front of the hotel. For your safety all the locks have addressable key cards. If the situation demands it, we can identify the key card and read the lock of each room. The card reader is set with an escape function that makes the door lock automatically after 1 minute when you leave or enter the room.

Bli med på en fjordtur i eit av dei mest populære fjordområda i Noreg. Den smale og spektakulære Nærøyfjorden er omkransa av bratte fjellsider med snødekte toppar som ragar 14oo meter over havet, og med brusande fossefall og idylliske grender langs fjorden. The narrow and spectacular fjord Nærøyfjorden is surrounded by steep hillsides with snow-covered mountain tops 1400 metres above sea level. Experience the artisans of shoe making through Aurlandskoen The Aurland Shoe has been produced since the 1930s, and today the Aurland Shoe Factory is the only remaining manufacturer of this traditional shoe. Meet the artisans of shoe making, follow the steps of the production process and discover interesting elements of the historic craft. Experience our Historical Hotel Every historical hotel has their tales of being haunted or of friendly ghosts, and thus Fretheim has more to offer than solely accommodation. Join us on a historical walk through the hotel, our rose garden or cultural park. We have guided historical walks of the hotel every day at 6 pm, sign up in the reception. You will of course have to taste one of our local specialties in our restaurant. If you wish you can combine a historical walk with an introduction to how to prepare salmon dishes, followed by enjoying these dishes for a 2-3 course lunch. Fretheim Kulturpark er ei 1600 m rundløype i naturen, tilrettelagt for historieforteljing, med utsiktpunkt og sitjeplassar. Som ei perle midt i Fretheim Kulturpark ligg Bakkastova, ein husmannsplass frå byrjinga av 1800-talet og ei typisk Sognestove, som i dag er ein kulturkafé som fungerer som utstillingsvindauga for lokal mat og handverk. Kulturparken har aktivitetsområde for barn og rebusløp for heile familien. Området er ope for alle og ligg like bak hotellet.

På denne sightseeingturen, som tek deg med buss frå Flåm, får du oppleva den mektige utsikten over verdsarvlandskapet i Nærøydalen frå utsiktspunkt hjå Stalheim Hotel og ein køyretur ned hårnålssvingane i Stalheimskleiva med utsyn mot Sivlefossen og Stalheimsfossen. På Stalheim vert det eit fotostopp, før nedfarten via den bratte og svingete Stalheimskleiva. Avgang frå Flåm 2 gonger daglig, og turen tek ca. 2 timar.

Experience Fretheim Cultural Park and Bakkastova Fretheim Cultural Park is a 1600 metres circular trail in natural surroundings, facilitated with histories, viewpoints, benches and seating areas. The park treasure is Bakkastova, an old cotters farm from the early 1800s and a house typical for the Sognefjorden area building traditions. Today Bakkastova is a cultural café and an exhibition for local food and handicraft. The cultural park has an activity area and quiz trail for children and families. The park is open for everyone and is located behind the hotel.

Take the route down the steep and winding Stalheimskleiva road Experience the magnificent views of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Nærøydalen valley and the drive down the steep and winding road Stalheimskleiva with views towards the waterfalls Sivlefossen and Stalheimsfossen. The sightseeing tour takes you by bus from Flåm, with a short stop at Stalheim Hotel for the panorama views of Nærøydalen, before returning to Flåm by driving the hairpin bends of Stalheimskleiva road. 2 daily departures from Flåm. Flåmsbana

Kulturvandring i Aurland

Flåmsbana er ei spektakulær og verdskjend togreise som byr på noko av det villlaste og mest storslåtte som finst av natur og fjordlandskap. Dette er ei av dei brattastast toglinjene i verda og ”eit must” for besøkande til Flåm. Den 20 kilometer lange togturen startar i Flåm og endar på høgfjellstasjonen Myrdal, 867 meter over havet. Tek du togturen tur-retur må du rekne ca. 2 timar.

Denne sightseeingturen byr på kulturopplevingar i Aurland og har oppstart i 2013. Turen inkluderer eit verkstadbesøk til glasblåsar Merete Rein, Vangen kyrkje og Aurland Skofabrikk. Turen tek ca. 3,5 timar.

A train journey on the world famous Flåmsbana As one of the steepest railway lines in the world, the Flåm Railway is a popular train journey and “a must” for all visitors to Fjord Norway. On board you will get panorama view of some of the wildest and most majestic examples of Norwegian fjord and mountain landscape. The 20 kilometer train journey starts in Flåm by the innermost point of the Aurlandsfjord, taking you to the mountains and Myrdal, 865 metres above sea level. The journey Flåm to Myrdal return takes approx. 2 hours.

Cultural walk in Aurland This sightseeing tour gives you a close meeting with cultural heritage and activities in Aurland and is a new tour from 2013. The tour includes a visit to the studio of the glasblowing artist Merete Rein, a visit to the stone church Vangen kyrkje and Aurland Shoe Factory. Duration: approx. 3,5 hours.

Om du søkjer andre aktivitetar og opplevingar enn våre Topp 10, så kan me her fortelja at Flåm har mykje meir å by på. Aurlandsdalen og Flåmsdalen er grøne, frodige, vakre og reine dalar. Ta beina fatt og sjå kva naturen har å by på; i Aurlandsdalen går du på sti og her kan du ta ein avstikkar til grotta ”Vetlehelvete” og velje ruta om Bjørnestigen for spesielt spektakulær utsikt. I Flåmsdalen kan du ta Flåmsbana og gå heile eller delar av Flåmsdalen i kulturlandskapet langs bygdevegen ned mot Flåm. Kajakk på Sognefjorden. For deg som ynskjer eit meir aktivt og nærare møte med fjorden og fjordlandskapet, er eit tips å leige deg din eigen kajakk. Moglegheitene for ekstremsport er òg gode i denne delen av landet. Vegen er kort til aktivitetar som paragliding, isklatring, fjellklatring, dykking, rafting, elvepadling og mykje meir. Kulturattraksjonar som museum, kyrkjer og bygdetun finst det fleire i området, der det er mogleg å ta inn over seg kulturen og tradisjonane som me har hatt her i århundre. I tillegg til Aurlandsskoen og Stegastein kan me nemne:

Flåmsbana museet – ligg på gamle stasjonen i Flåm og fortel om historia til Flåmsbana.

Otternes Bygdetun – ligg i fjellsida rett utanfor Flåm. Det er eit tun med 27 autentiske hus og eit levande gardsmuseum med nydeleg utsikt, tradisjonar og historie.

Holo Gardstun – ligg oppover i Flåmsdalen der det er moglegheit for å oppleva mattradisjonar og kulturformidling.

Stavkyrkjene i Undredal og Borgund er opne for besøkjande heile året. Det same er den fantastiske kyrkja i Flåm.

Om vinteren er det berre ein kort køyretur frå Flåm til Voss Fjellandsby Myrkdalen, eit av dei mest snøsikre skiområda i Noreg. Her finn du mykje naturskapt snø og flotte forhold for alpint og langrenn. Opplevingar hjå Fretheim Hotel.

Aurlandsdalen and Flåmsdalen valleys are green, lush, beautiful and clean. They are both ideal for hiking and offers unique nature experiences such as the grotto Vetlehelvete and the steep route Bjørnestigen in Aurlandsdalen, and the possibility to combine the Flåm Railway with walking the entire or parts of the Flåmsdalen valley. Sea kayaking on the Sognefjord gives you a closer and more active meeting with the fjord and fjord landscapes, and a tip is to rent your own sea kayak. The potential for extreme sports are almost endless in our part of Norway. Not far from Flåm you can engage in activities such as paragliding, ice climbing, rock climbing, scuba diving, rafting, river kayaking and much more. Cultural attractions, such as museums, churches and farm yards can be found in numbers in the nearby area, and are places to learn about the culture and the traditions that has been here for generations. In addition to Aurlandskoen and Stegastein, we can mention:

Flam Railway - located on the old train station in Flåm. This museum tells the history of the Flam Railway.

Otternes Farmyard - located on the mountainside just outside Flåm. The museum has a yard with 27 authentic houses and a living farm museum with beautiful views, traditions and history.

Holo Farmyard - a farm in the hills of Flåm valley, where there is opportunity to experience the food traditions and cultural history.

The stave churches in Undredal and Borgund are open all year to visitors. In addition, the magnificent church in Flåm (from 1667), is open all summer.

In winter it is only a short drive from Flåm to the mountain village Voss Fjellandsby Myrkdalen and one of the most snow-reliable ski centres in Norway. Here you will find a lot of snow and perfect conditions for alpine and cross country skiing.

Where to dine Flåm is a treasury of fine local ingredients for creating unique tastes. Our area has a wealth of quality-minded producers, providing everything from cured meat, lamb and mutton, venison and reindeer meat, fresh trout from mountain lakes, white and brown goat cheese, locally brewed cider and beer, and locally grown fruit and vegetables. Restaurant – breakfast, lunch and dinner with panorama views of the fjord and mountains. Ladyen Pub – small dishes, homemade cakes, hot and cold beverages served inside or in the garden. The Lobby Bar – cakes, small dishes and tasteful drinks in the lobby (see page 12 for more information). Outdoor Bathtub for 8 people can be rented. Our very own rose garden and garden with local fauna and name info about the different plants and flowers.
