ALTEA XL
SEAT is committed to a policy of continuous product development and reserves the right to make changes to specifications, colours and prices without notice. The information in this brochure can therefore be given as guidance only. While SEAT makes every effort to ensure that specifications are accurate at the time of publication (15.11.2006), you should always check with your authorised SEAT Dealer for the latest information. Due to limitations of the printing process the colours reproduced in this brochure may vary slightly from the actual paint colour and material. This vehicle and all its parts, as well as the original spares, were designed according to the Legal Regulations governing the prevention and minimisation of Environmental Impact, through the use of recycled/recyclable materials, with measures taken to achieve suitable recycling for the conservation and improvement of environmental quality.
The Altea XL makes room for all those essential items. Like alligators, castles and small planets. Families, as every parent knows, come with a lot of essential items. Of course, some items are less essential than others. But try telling that to an eight year old. So, to make room for all the necessities, we set about designing a new, longer Altea. Naturally, we named it the Altea XL.
Your family has grown.
So has ours. The new Altea may be bigger, but you can still expect the familiar honeycombed front grills and our signature Dynamic line. The visible tailpipe is another SEAT hallmark. Heated side mirrors are electrically-adjustable, folding neatly into ‘parking position’ (and out of harm’s way). The wipers are just as well-trained and cleverly disappear into the front pillars. With the posse in tow, it also seemed like a smart idea to fit a roof-rack. Which all goes to prove that as well as being longer, the XL is a car with more up top.
Electrically-adjustable side mirrors fold into ‘parking position’ to avoid scrapes.
Twin BiXenon headlights.
Anti-theft antenna.
Hell hath no fury like a child minus her favourite toy. There’s nothing quite like a few tears to dampen a trip in a hurry. Thankfully, it’s not something you have to worry about in the XL, which is roomy enough to ensure that nobody gets left behind.
Teddy bear-friendly. With its high roofline, the XL makes access easy (even if you’re a teddy bear). In fact, it offers more front headroom than any other car in its class.
Car sweet car. For legroom in the back, this five-seater is out in front. Of course, where kids are concerned, there’s something even more important than knee room, and that’s elbow room. Which is why the XL comes with SEAT’s very own ‘Anti-squabble Zone’ (put another way, that means an unrivalled amount of space between the rear passengers). If battle-lines need to be drawn, it’s a relief to know that they can fold down the armrest/table, complete with cup-holders. Front seats are fitted with fold-down ‘airplane-style’ seat-back shelves. Rear backrests are adjustable, allowing the kids to kick back after a hard day’s play – the perfect excuse, we thought, for ‘One touch’ electric windows all around (with all this talk about generous amounts of space, it’s only fitting that their design is known as anti-squeeze).
INTERIOR SPACE
In the Stylance and Sport-up, seats are both height and ‘lumbar’ adjustable. ‘Airplane-style’ seat-back shelves.
Two cup-holders in central console.
Plenty of room for imaginary friends. The XL’s additional 18.7cm equals an extra 123 litres of space, giving it a 532 litre boot capacity in total (one of the largest in its class). But here’s where the XL excels. The rear seats can be positioned in a variety of ways to suit both kids and cargo. Need that extra bit of room in the boot? Simply shift one of the seats forward. Need a bit more? Shift two of them forward, or all three. If the journey’s long and they feel like stretching out, slide the seats backwards. Whichever way you slice it, the XL is fully flexible. As for imaginary friends, there’s no telling where they could be. You could start by looking in the storage bins under the front seats. Or in the roofmounted sunglasses box on the driver’s side. If they’re not there, check the pouches on the driver and passenger backrests (and while you’re at it, search the storage case in the rear centre console). With the XL’s endless number of hideaways, happy hunting.
Front and rear door panel storage is roomy enough to fit a 1.5 litre bottle. Fully-flexible rear seat configuration to suit your requirements.
Technology-wise, the XL comes with just about everything you could wish for. (Except maybe an anti-tantrum device.) Until that magical day comes, we can promise the next best thing – air conditioning (it could make all the difference when it comes to preventing those heated family moments). We can also promise Bluetooth and a Radio/CD/MP3 player with AUX-in, iPod and USB connections. Six speakers are standard, except when you choose the Stylance or Sport-Up models. Then you get eight. Those last two models also include Climatronic, steering wheel controls, and a rain sensor (which alerts the wipers to the first drop). Time for a detour to the TOM TOM GO 710 Navigation System*. TOM TOM features an extra-wide touch screen, and issues easy-tofollow spoken instructions to give you door-to-door navigation across western Europe. It also makes use of your car speakers to double up as a hands-free car kit. Finally, we switch to cruise control, which kicks in with the help of the XL’s on-board computer. Like we said, we’ve thought of (almost) everything. *Available as accessory
The orange juice theory. At SEAT, we hope that a bottle of spilled orange juice will be the biggest emergency you ever have to face. Which is why we’ve equipped the Altea XL with the very latest in active and passive safety systems. Passive safety systems are there to protect you and your passengers in the event of an accident. Active safety technology is there to enable you to steer clear of trouble in the first place. In other words, active and passive equals safe and sound.
Active Safety. Not surprisingly, the XL is equipped with a family-sized list of safety features. But let’s start with the latest: AFS headlights. AFS stands for Adaptable Front-lighting System – intelligent BiXenon headlights follow the rotational movements of the steering wheel, offering a wider field of vision in the curves. Should those curves get a little too curvy, you can rely on our Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). ESP monitors information from the steering wheel, tyres, breaks and accelerator and uses the data to make any necessary adjustments. Result? The XL holds the perfect line and doesn’t let go.
SEAT’s Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) helps you to hold the perfect line.
When you hit the pedal, the Traction Control System (TCS) ensures that not a drop of horsepower is wasted. When you need to hit the other pedal, the latest generation of ABS isn’t the only thing you can count on. Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA) provides maximum braking power from the shortest pedal movement.

Passive Safety.

Emergency Brake Assistance – maximum braking power, minimum effort.
Six airbags are standard – two front, two side, two curtain (you also have the option of two rear ‘Thorax’ airbags). The front passenger airbag can be disconnected to prevent injury to an infant. And to prevent injury to all five passengers, the three-point seatbelts are pre-tensioned – if braking is particularly forceful a limiter is activated, easing the belt’s tension. To make you feel even more comfortable, the front seatbelts are height-adjustable. You can also rely on crash-test proven crossbeams, safety-cab rings and reinforced pillars. And to underline the point that the back of the car doesn’t occupy the back of our minds, rear Isofix points enable two child seats to be anchored directly to the chassis.
A multilink rear axle enhances both safety and comfort.
Once you’ve had a family, some of your priorities change. The important word there is ‘some’. You’re a family man now. Responsible. Considerate. Always thinking of others’ needs before your own. So remember that you’re not, repeat not, thinking of buying the XL because of its roadholding capabilities. Of course not. You wouldn’t be seduced by that marvelous piece of engineering we call an Agile Chassis. Highly rigid and finely tuned, it turns the steering, brakes, transmission and body into a single, responsive unit that instantly transforms your every intention into a precise manoeuvre. Much safer to talk instead about speed-sensitive assisted power steering and anti-lock brakes. About joins and seams that are precision-welded for a more stable chassis. Together with carefully tuned springs and dampers, this enhances road safety and minimises body roll. You might also mention that the XL is equipped with an advanced Multilink Rear Axle, resulting in unparalleled levels of safety and comfort. Like we said. Responsible.
The XL range is a bit like the family outing. You always find you have more than you think. The XL may be longer at the back, but we’ve also ensured that it doesn’t fall short up front. Extra kick arrives in the form of Fuel Stratified Injection and selective pump injector technology. Simply put, Fuel Stratified Injection (or FSI) produces optimum combustion by injecting fuel directly into the cylinder. As for the selective pump injector technology bit, we’re proud to say that it’s something you’ll find in every SEAT TDI engine – it means fuel injection to each cylinder is controlled electronically. In both cases, economy is improved by as much as 15%. And in both cases, the reward is the same: increased torque.

Diesel engines.
Petrol engines.
The 1.9 TDI 105hp has two big 2.0 litre brothers – the 170hp version features a Diesel Particle Filter (DPF) and a 16 valve head for optimum power, peak efficiency and low emissions. Like the 170hp version, the 140hp model is available with DPF. It’s also available with another impressive set of letters next to its name: DSG. DSG stands for Direct Shift Gearbox, and this eliminates the usual conflict between sportiness, convenience and economy to deliver a smoother and more responsive drive.
The XL is available with a family of four petrol engines, including the 2.0 FSI 150hp – take your pick between the conventional six-speed and the sequential gearbox version. The new 1.8 160hp is also a six-speed, and owes its extra bite to TFSI: TFSI uses FSI direct-injection technology, boosted by a turbocharger.
Here’s where you’ll find the standard equipment lists. Naturally, they’re on the longer side.
