DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM AND LEARNING
This program is available to undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of elementary education, bilingual education, TESOL, Spanish, and Spanish teaching. During the first pilot year, this program will be offered as TSL 418, ESL Methods in Content Classrooms with a planned course in Summer Session A. This is a 3-credit course experience that will meet twice, online synchronously, prior to departure and once again to submit and share final portfolios upon return to the United States.
Students will meet daily with the assigned teacher from La Paz Community School (in Brasilito), an internationally-renowned leader in the areas of dual language education, placebased education and cross-cultural competence. The school offers a visitor education program that provides an opportunity for students preparing to be educators to engage with culturally and linguistically diverse students. Students will spend full days observing and teaching in classroom contexts. Students also will meet regularly with the course professor.
The people, practices, and setting of La Paz have long served as a source of inspiration to visiting educators. In this immersive program, students will be paired with an educator in a specific grade and will co-plan and co-teach alongside seasoned dual language educators and participate in school and community events. With the support of the La Paz leadership team, students will use empirically supported practices to develop an action plan for implementation in their learning communities, to be leveraged in student teaching and beyond.
Program tuition is not included in program fee.

The summer program in Poulton, a multi-period excavation site dating back to the Mesolithic period, offers students an unprecedented field school experience in bio-archaeology (no prior experience in archaeology is required). Students excavate human remains in a lost cemetery in NW England as a means to reconstruct the biological and cultural history in this region. Chester, one of the best-preserved walled cities in the UK and our home base, is five miles from Poulton.
The multidisciplinary field school provides instruction in archaeological methodology; human anatomy and physiology; paleopathology; identifying, documenting and recording human remains; lectures in English history; tours to nearby ruins; and hands-on workshops, e.g, medieval weaponry. Prior excavations have uncovered a lost chapel and graveyard. With 10,000 years of continuous occupation at this site, the archaeology has yielded artifacts from high-status Roman occupation, Bronze Age farming, Neolithic activity, and Mesolithic use of the site for seasonal hunting. Students also explore local culture and cuisine. No prior experience in archaeology is required; this trip is open to all students.
Students must select ANT 305.
PROGRAM FEE: $3,800
Program tuition is not included in program fee.

“The Southern in Paris program was an amazing month and an adventure of a lifetime. I saw, did, and learned so much about Paris, the world, and myself while exploring with the class, as well as on my own.
I got to see France’s world-famous military parade, wander the labyrinthine halls and galleries of the Louvre Museum, make Chantilly whipped cream at a chateau in the countryside, and eat all the smoked salmon and camembert baguettes I wanted (and try so much other great food, too). I loved it!”

The summer program in Spain grants students the opportunity to learn and study in some of the country’s most distinguished communities. The great university city of Salamanca is Spain’s finest showcase of Renaissance and Plateresque architecture. Other major sights are the two cathedrals and the 13th-century university, one of Europe’s oldest and most distinguished.
Andalucia is the largest of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities and one of the most important regions of Spain. It is in Andalucia where East meets West in an exotic melting pot of Jewish, Gypsy, Moorish, and Christian cultures in towns and cities like Cordoba, Granada, Seville, and Cadiz.
Madrid, Spain’s capital city, is a city of breathtaking boulevards, beautifully manicured historic parks, and grandiose plazas. It is renowned for its repositories of European art lining the “Paseo del Arte”— a one-kilometer stretch that is home to three of the best museums in the world — and its stunning architecture, including the portico-lined Plaza Mayor and the nearby baroque Royal Palace and Armory.
The program director will recommend one of the following courses based on student’s proficiency level and academic needs: SPA 100, SPA 101, SPA 200, SPA 210, SPA 300W, SPA 301, SPA 310, SPA 405, SPA 490, SPA 496, SPA 600. This program involves collaborating with local health professionals to provide basic healthcare services, including health screenings, maternal and child care, and education on nutrition and hygiene practices. We visit rural communities around Cusco, where students engage directly with locals, offering care and health education to both children and adults. Having this experience allows students to refine their nursing skills in a resource-limited setting, fostering adaptability, and crosscultural communication.
In addition to the clinical work, students participate in several cultural visits, including a tour of the historic city of Cusco, a visit to the Sacred Valley, and an exploration of the iconic Incan site of Machu Picchu. These excursions provide a rich cultural context to the service work, deepening students’ appreciation of Peru’s rich heritage. Interactions with local families, artisans, and cultural guides help students understand the link between cultural identity, social determinants of health, and healthcare practices.
Program tuition is not included in program fee.
This non-credit program is embedded into NUR 442: Community Health Nursing; NUR 430: Childbearing Nursing; and NU 431: The Child Rearing Family. Students receive credit for four days of their required clinical hours (two days for Community Health and two for Childbearing).

DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT, GEOGRAPHY, AND MARINE SCIENCES
This program aims to engage students first-hand in the study and analysis of current environmental justice and sustainability issues in South Africa’s Western Cape Province. Students will be exposed to the complexities of these issues in a variety of local and regional environments and sociocultural contexts, from the semi-arid Little Karoo Desert to the coastal metropolis of Cape Town. The substantial variety of natural and cultural environments in a small geographic area makes the experience ideal for a short-term study abroad program. After successful completion of the program, students will have developed detailed knowledge and understanding of the social, economic, political, and environmental factors that need to be considered when analyzing land use, water resource, and coastal development conflicts through the lens of environmental justice. While students will develop an understanding of sustainable development initiatives, and social and environmental justice issues primarily in the context of South Africa’s Western Cape Province, students will also learn to transfer their gained knowledge to other regional contexts.
Program tuition is not included in program fee.
Undergraduate students must enroll in GEO 405: Environmental Justice (3 credits). Graduate students may enroll in CRM 550: Field Experience (3 credits).
Course tuition is separate from the program fee and will be paid via BannerWeb or directly to the Student Accounts Office.
