Long-Time Professor Retires After 23 years at SCSU, Dr. JoAnn Asquith is retiring. In her time here, Dr. Asquith was chair of the Marketing department, worked to develop business programs in Alnwick, England and Inglostadt, Germany and directed programs in Australia and South America. She has taught 17 different courses at both the undergraduate and MBA levels. HBS, the Marketing Department and students will miss her. Take a minute to say thank you and good-bye when you see her and read more about Dr. Asquith below.

Herberger Business School Rookie of the Year HBS won the Rookie of the Year award at the prestigious International Collegiate Sales Competition, hosted by Florida State University, in early November. One of the largest sales competitions in the country, the ISCS’s mission is “To enhance the selling profession by encouraging the development of critical skills needed by today’s collegiate sales graduates in a fun competitive environment and where companies can meet the nation’s top collegiate sales talent” (fsusalesinsititue.com). The competition hosted participants from 75 different schools across the country, many of which have specialized sales majors. This is the first time HBS has attended the ISCS and it was honored as Rookie of the Year out of 12 eligible schools. Why did you choose your discipline/field? My undergraduate degree was in Economics and Psychology. Marketing allowed me to combine these areas and other disciplines to approach business problems. I could make use of both analytical and creative skills. It is the most creative area of business. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received? Choose your attitude and set your priorities. When my father died I couldn’t help but notice that even after a 38 year career it was his family, friends and faith that brought him the most joy in Continued on page 5

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Hello from the Marketing Department! It has been an amazing Fall 2016 term here in Marketing…it is hard to believe that another semester is in the books. In this edition of our Department Newsletter, you’ll hear from one of our most senior faculty, Dr. JoAnn Asquith who will be retiring from SCSU. You’ll also learn more about our MKTG 320 course and Dr. Young’s approach to teaching the class. We’ll also introduce you to Cassie Howder, our Fall 2016 Student of the Term and to Cyril Johnson, Jasmine Grant, and Mike Wigstrom, the winners of the Fall 2016 Professional Selling Competition. We just have to say it: Professional Selling Rocks! Earlier this semester, two of our students -- Casandra Howder and Samantha O’Brien -- competed in the International Collegiate Sales Competition (ICSC) at Florida State University. Cassie and Sam and their sales coach Professor Dave Titus represented our Professional Selling Specialization for the first time at this event. Not only did Sam and Cassie finish in the top 20 (out of over 150 students) at the competition, our Professional Selling Specialization program earned the ICSC 2016 Rookie of the Year and the Rising Star awards. We’re very proud of Cassie and Sam and all of our sales students. On Friday, December 2nd, we a held the Marketing Department’s Fall 2016 Professional Selling Competition and Career Fair. This term we had 62 student competitors (and had more students asking if they could compete), almost 50 sales professionals (who serve as buyers/judges for the students) representing 26 firms and 22 organizations at our Sales Career Fair. To make the competition go, we run 5 recording rooms and 5 evaluation rooms simultaneously and hold the Fair concurrently. Talk about an action packed day... wow! This event, sponsored by Northwestern Mutual, Anderson Trucking Services, Capital One, Penske and Marco, provides a venue for our sales students to showcase their skills and knowledge and provides a tremendous opportunity for both students and sales professionals to interact. In fact, as the day unfolds, many students receive offers for internship and/or job interviews from participating firms. It is an exciting and fast paced day! We invite you to join us on April 21st, 2017 for our Spring 17 Sales Competition – mark your calendar and join the excitement!

trip to Orlando. SCSU participated in the Role-Play competition which was eventually won by a student from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Other Minnesota schools in attendance included The University of Minnesota, Minnesota State Winona and the College of St. Catherine. To prepare for the competition, Cassie and Sam spent 4 hours a week working with Professor Titus. He provided suggestions in each meeting that the young women then incorporated by their next meeting. They prepared hard, put in time and effort and were a pleasure to work with, said Professor Titus.

All the work paid off. Cassie tied for 6th out of 150 participants in total points, a terrific showing for her first competition outside of SCSU. In addition to the competition, Cassie and Sam participated in the Career Fair where they networked with well-known companies. Both took the opportunity to mingle and meet with sales professionals. Both women are currently talking about future opportunities with companies they took the time to visit with at the Career Fair. “It was a great experience for all of us,” said Professor Titus.

STUDENT OF THE TERM Focus on Casandra Howder, senior Marketing student, Herberger Business School

What’s one thing you couldn’t live without (personally or professionally)? Water. Haha, jokes. I need my support group. My husband, family, friends and mentors mean the world to me. What is your position in AMA? The same semester I joined AMA, I was elected as Traditional Marketing Director for a Coca-Cola case competition, and I won the gold member award for becoming the most involved person in the club. I absolutely love the organization and the people in it. I became the Vice President of Community Service the next semester and helped our club win a national award for our service efforts.

What is your favorite marketing class and why? Any class with Dr. Garth Harris is a great time, but I particularly liked Seminar in Sales Management (MKTG 425). I hope to become a sales manager so I found this class to be relevant and interesting. I also enjoyed both professional selling classes taught by Professor Dave Titus, (MKTG 415 and 426). These classes helped me realize my skill in sales and desire to pursue it as a career. Why are you interested in marketing? Initially, I became interested in marketing because a wise man once told me I had traits that were perfect for the profession. Over time I became more interested because I learned that marketers meet people, understand needs, and provide solutions. I am compassionate and enjoy helping people using persuasive tools and techniques. What is your dream job? My dream job would be to act on Broadway or help elephants in Africa. But I opted to make acting a hobby and get a cat, so I somewhat fulfilled those goals. I hope to one day be a CEO of a company that helps make people’s lives better.

Please mention other accomplishments, leadership activities, etc. • I acted in a professional theater group for 13 years, staring in many productions. I was asked to direct my own production. I auditioned and cast 40 actors. • As president of a youth version of Rotary, I organized, fund raised and completed a service project in Latacunga, Ecuador (2012). I cleaned and painted old daycare centers and built new ones. I got to interact with and provide love to children in the centers. My club donated two, much-needed, water purification systems and several computers. • I completed another service project in Amman, Jordan of the Middle East in 2014. I worked in refugee camps to help victims of war become self-sufficient members of society. • I have traveled 2-3 times a year for the last 5 years speaking at Rotary conventions. I deliver inspirational speeches to encourage this international organization to put resources towards mentoring youth. I have spoken in 6 states and 3 countries. The largest crowd I have spoken to held 2,000 Rotary leaders from all around the world. My speech was translated into 20+ languages by interpreters back stage.

achieved 4 internships in college with Viking Coca Cola, Performance Food Group, College Works Painting, and Rotary. • I worked 33 hours a week throughout college as a sales associate for Capital One Bank. I was promoted 3 times within my 2 years of employment and consistently exceeded sales targets, finishing in top 35% of employees. • As a sophomore at SCSU, I was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in a business program accredited by AACSB International. I was recognized for academic excellence in business studies (Ranked top 10% in business school). • I established St. Cloud’s first Rotaract club, a service organization for young professionals who want to give back to the community and network with other professionals. • I was the champion of the SCSU Sales competition in Fall of 2015. I sold Google’s cloud computing system designed specifically for businesses. • I was asked to represent SCSU at the International Collegiate Sales Competition in Florida this year. This is the largest sales competition in America. I made it to the Semi-finals, placing 8th out of the nation’s top collegiate sales talent. I also won Rookie of the Year for placing 1st among the 11 universities competing for the first time. The product I sold was NetSuite’s CRM Software system. • I achieved a Professional Selling Specialization at SCSU. I won Student of the Term.

• I won a Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA). RYLA is a worldwide program operated by Rotary International. I

Professional Selling Competition and Sales Career Fair Thank you to all of the firms who participated in the Competition events:

From left: Jasmine Grant, Cyril Johnson and Mike Wigstrom

The Fall 2016 Professional Selling Competition and Sales Career Fair were held on December 2nd, 2016. Both events were held in Centennial Hall on the St. Cloud State University campus and it was an exciting and fun day focused on relationships, career opportunities and networking. We had over 60 talented sales students and nearly 50 sales professionals from some 25 area and regional firms working together throughout the day. To make it all work we used ten rooms (5 recording and 5 viewing/evaluation), including the Northwestern Mutual Sales Lab, simultaneously. We had two rounds of competition with the top 8 students from the first round – Alexandra Vara, Mike Wigstrom, Jasmine Grant, Chelsea Kanduth, Vanessa Lund, Cyril Johnson, Zachary Stodolka, and Korey Zetah -- moving on to the finals. The top finishers in the event were: 1st Place: Cyril Johnson; 2nd Place: Jasmine Grant, and 3rd Place: Mike Wigstrom. Congratulations to all of our finalists and to all participants! The Sales Career Fair once again proved to be a wonderful opportunity for employers and sales students to connect and discuss career opportunities, job interviews, internships, and more. Over 20 firms participated in the Fair and not only showcased their organization to the students but also learned more about the students, their career goals, and knowledge of the firms. The Sales Career Fair has become a valuable tool by which firms can share information about company missions, product portfolios, career entry and growth opportunities and more.

Bringing Experience into Marketing 320 Marketing 320 is the Introduction to Marketing course and Professor Richard Young brings a lifetime of experience into the classroom. While teaching students the marketing mix and how to conduct SWOT analysis, Professor Young connects with students in a variety of ways. At the beginning of each class, Professor Young and the students spend 5 or 10 minutes discussing what’s in the news—“Hopscotching the World for Headlines” he calls it. They may talk about President Trump’s plan for the wall or the weekend’s football games. Often the topics will relate to business, but Professor Young’s goal is to help students see they are in a national and global world, not just in the four walls of the classroom or on the campus of SCSU. With classical music playing in the background, Prof. Young connects with his students, which is his favorite part of teaching. He creates an interactive class, joking with students, drawing them out and sharing his personal experiences. Professor Young will share personal examples from his time in the Army, his many years in business, and his family. He tries to give them “stories they’re not expecting to hear in a marketing class,” he said, because often the funny or strange stories are what students will remember. Showing them a Cheerios box he brought back from a trip to Amsterdam makes a discussion on the similarities and differences engaging, concrete and memorable, for example. Students in Professor Young’s Intro to Marketing class learn about marketing basics and the hear stories that make the world, and business, become more than just examples in the textbook.

life. Keeping a balance between career and family is difficult, but I have tried to give my all to my students, but within lines of family first. According to Egyptian traditions there are two questions you are asked before you enter heaven, “Did you find joy in life and did you bring joy to others.” If you can say “yes” to both the gates open. What will you miss most about SCSU’s marketing department? I will miss the amazing women and men I have worked with in the department and college. Many are life-long friends. I will miss the women who have been office managers and kept my life sane over most of my career. They are unsung heroes of the university.

to visit our son and his wife and children. Being a grandparent is one of the most amazing experiences in life. We plan to travel a great deal in the next ten years. Our first trip will be to Cozumel in March and then Cuba in September. I plan to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and do somethings I have never tried before, but have always wanted to learn. I hope to work with Dr. Oyedele on a grant that helps to develop women entrepreneurs in Nigeria. Mostly, I am going to enjoy not being on a schedule and watch amazing sunsets each evening.

What are your plans for retirement? My husband retired 8 years ago and I am going to join him for winters in Florida. We are purchasing a home in Michigan for our summer home. Our oldest son lives in Florida so we will see him each winter and we will come back to Minnesota frequently

Business Students Study in England Alnwick Summer 2017 Students in the Herberger Business School will spend five weeks in Alnwick, England this summer as part of a business-specific study abroad program. The program is being led by Marketing Department professors Janell Kurtz and Emil Towner. It will give students the opportunity to study abroad and experience different cultures and business practices while earning credits towards their degrees. In addition to two academic courses, the program will integrate field trips to business, cultural, and historical sites in United Kingdom and Scotland. Those experiences will include a field trip to Edinburgh Castle in Scotland as well as a short stay in London and tours of Lloyds of London, Bank of England, and House of Hardy.

Students will also engage with residents and organizations in the local community through volunteering and service opportunities. While in England, students will live and study in Alnwick Castle. Alnwick Castle has served as an integral partner to St. Cloud State University’s study abroad

program since 1981. The castle is 700 years old and remains one of the largest inhabited castles in the United Kingdom. Fans of the Harry Potter movies and the Downtown Abbey television series will also recognize the castle, which has become a popular filming location in England.

HUSKY AMA UPDATES

Fun at the Husky AMA (American Marketing Association) Ugly Sweater Bowling night

This semester’s flown by fast for us! In addition to hosting great speakers, such as an event coordinator for the Target Center and the VP of Marketing for Marco, here are some of the events we took part in: • Adopt-a-Highway (October) The time came to make our highway pretty again! One afternoon we all took a trip out to St. Augusta with garbage bags in hand to clean up our road. With so many helping hands, it was all taken care of in no time and we celebrated with dinner at Applebee’s. • Pumpkinfest (October) A spooky Halloween outing for kids was held at Lake George, and AMA is proud to have helped! In the three shifts across 11 hours, our members assisted in everything from the setup, to running activities, to take-down. • Habitat For Humanity ReStore (November) For a couple of hours, we helped Habitat For Humanity’s ReStore in St. Cloud –

their chain of stores that sells low-cost housing materials. From organizing hundreds of tiles to helping customers buy cabinets, a our volunteers had a great time giving back to a great organization.

Meetings every Wednesday from 12:001:00 p.m. in Atwood’s Cascade Room (2nd floor).

• Ugly Sweater Bowling (November) Our tradition was carried on once more in the Atwood Underground! Each of us wore our ugliest sweaters and had a fun evening of bowling and food. A $20 gift card was given to bearer of the ugliest sweater – join us next year for another night of fun! • Winter Wonderland (December) Another event for the kids at Lake George, this time to prepare for Christmas! Activities outdoors were held, and although the weather was chilly, the fun was worth it. This time around, we provided help to set up the four-hour event. This is only one half of the exciting things we have planned for the 2016-2017 school year– join us in the Spring!

Cuba Study Abroad Program Cuba: In many ways it’s a nation of mystique and secretiveness; a dynamic illustration of economic protectionism and governmental responses to political differences; a land of unrivaled natural beauty, from its sandy beaches and coral reefs to its pristine forests and marshlands. Cuba is also a land of economic and cultural change. In March of 2017, Professors Denny Bristow and Rajesh Gulati, along with Suzanne Nordos from the MBA office, will be leading a study abroad program to provide some 20 students with first-hand experiences with these and other facets of Cuba. The 12-day program will begin in Havanna and will include business and cultural tours across the island, with stops in Miami and Little Havana; Havana, Parraga, Santa Clara, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Mayabeque Province and more. Students will tour and interact with business leaders representing a variety of industries including agriculture, higher education, food and beverage, eco-marketing, wildlife preserves, and more. Cultural site visits and presentations will include the Plaza de la Revolucion, Jose Fuster Studio, Zapata National Park, Bay of Pigs Museum, Ceinfuegos Orchestra, El Cubano Park, Canonazo and the cannon firing, and many more. We’ll share photos and a full report on the program in the Spring 17 newsletter.
