FY18 ATHLETICS ANNUAL R…PORT

Dear Friends of Huskies Athletics: One of the reasons we publish an annual report is to remind people of the value of athletics to personal development and social engagement at St. Cloud State. Being a studentathlete teaches the values of teamwork, leadership, conflict management, and resilience that are used every day in personal and professional lives. Our student-athletes reap a support system that helps them navigate the successes and challenges that comprise a college career. And not the least, they have gained memories of unpredictable travel, crazy roommates (and evenings out), and milestone wins. The experience is personal, but shared with people who become your closest friends. The future of collegiate athletics in public education in general, and St. Cloud State specifically, relies on the investment of our alumni and friends to ensure the next generation of Huskies has access to the same quality experience that enabled so many to compete and succeed. We appreciate your time, talent, and financial investments in our young men and women. Go Huskies! Heather Weems St. Cloud State University Director of Athletics

ALUMNI ATHLETE: LAC…Y HORN “St. Cloud State provided an excellent academic foundation to help launch my marketing and client relations career. My experiences as a student-athlete taught me how to manage my time while juggling multiple responsibilities, which has proven itself critical to success in my field. I am so thankful for the women who went before me because I know their example helped shape me into the person I am today.”

ALUMNI ATHLETE: SCOTT QUISLING

“Being a student-athlete at St. Cloud State gave me a chance to play in the NFL and get a business degree, which helped me to gain both the confidence and knowledge to be successful in owning and growing my own business.”

ALUMNI ATHLETE: SW…N-MARI… G…RMANN “SCSU provided the academic undergraduate experience that prepared me for graduate school in physical therapy. In 2013, I opened my own physical therapy clinic. What started as a “1-woman show” and 360 square feet, has grown to three, full-time physical therapists, two admin assistants, a business partner, 6 sub-tenants and 3600 square feet. The lessons I learned as a member of a successful volleyball team have allowed me to build a successful business!”

“The physical and emotional demands of bedside nursing require a great deal of stamina and perseverance. As a student-athlete, I learned resiliency, mental toughness, and self-care. I needed to build on those skills as I endured many physically demanding shifts and learned to cope with the hardest, most emotionally taxing cases. I learned to rest, recharge, and come back each shift knowing my team and my patients needed me there.”

“The critical thinking, collaboration, and leadership skills that I have gained as a student-athlete are skills that cannot be taught in the classroom. Without SCSU athletics, I would not be the same person I am today. The unique experiences I’ve had as a student-athlete enabled me to gain valuable leadership experience that will help me be a leader in my career.”

STUDENT-ATHLETE: MARIA WITT…

STUDENT-ATHLETE: MATH…W M…Y…R “Success on the field individually as well for the team was awesome, but not the only reason why baseball enriched my experience. The hard work and team mentality developed life-long friendships with stories that will be remembered forever. Athletics became an anchor point in my everyday college life due to its stability and expectations. I feel prepared to continue onward to the next steps of grad school and life in the 21st century.”

INCREASE IN SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT IN FY18 FROM FY17:

Sustainable growth in philanthropic giving is critical to the long-term success of Huskies Athletics

Increasing engagement from Alumni Athletes and the coaching staff in philanthropic efforts is a top priority: In FY18 St. Cloud State launched the first ever alumni challenge for athletics, utilizing the Foundation’s crowdfunding platform. Using a challenge gift of $10K from an alum as “prize money”, SCSU challenged all sports to compete for 12 days to see who could achieve the highest levels of alumni participation, by percentage. Women’s Swim & Dive won 1st Place and earned $5000. Men’s Golf won 2nd Place and earned $3000.

$282,978 $76,929 3 YEAR AVERAGE SCHOLARSHIP DOLLARS RAISED:

Men’s Swim & Dive won 3rd Place and earned $2000. All moneys were deposited in their sport’s program fund. Alumni Athlete participation tripled over FY17. $80,000 was raised in just 12 days from 675 donors.
