From The Board of Directors

Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Activity Center and Beyond

It’s been over six weeks and 1,000 pieces of cake since the January 14 open house for the newly renovated Activity Center. The renovation process, open house and ongoing daily operations could not have happened without a great deal of support, volunteerism and hard work from a large number of SCOV residents and employees. My thanks to all of them.

I hope that you have taken the opportunity to enjoy the Activity Center and the wonderful artwork throughout the building. I also hope that you have had a nice cup of coffee or wine and relaxed a bit at The Bistro Coffee and Wine Bar. There is not another place in our community that offers this type of comfortable environment with both inside and outside seating.

I asked my granddaughter (once and only once) what the difference was between her and me, other than age. She told me that I don’t go to the mall and hang out. I don’t shop. And, I don’t hang out with friends. There were a few other I don’ts, but I’ll skip those for now.

I can now tell her that I can do all of those things, and I can do them in just one building right here in my community at Sun City Oro Valley. The place is the revitalized Activity Center. Just wander around and look at the artwork for sale by our local residents. Take a few minutes to meet with friends at the outdoor Kiva patio or the indoor Kachina Lounge or at the coffee and wine bar.

The effort and monies that we have put into the Activity Center endeavor are not just for those of us who are living here now, but also for those that will be moving in for the next 20 or more years. As our population changes throughout the years, our community must also change to accommodate new ideas, activities, perspectives and outlooks. This has been done with the revitalized Activity Center, and we will continue with other improvements over the years to come. Let’s look forward to all of the possible opportunities.

Ramblings

Isn’t it wonderful that we now have the recently upgraded Activity Center with The Bistro? We appreciate the many residents who have availed themselves of the opportunity to patronize this facility. The Bistro comes with a few restrictions from the Arizona Liquor Licensing Board: “Open containers” of alcoholic beverages may not be removed from the licensed area of The Bistro. Your assistance in observing this restriction is appreciated.

We still have a few more weeks of the sun coming up later in the morning. Some of you are early morning walkers who go out even before the sun comes up. When you’re getting ready to go walking, please keep in mind that dark clothing is hard to see in the dark before daylight. It will be safer for everyone if you wear light color or reflective clothes.

Summer will soon be upon us. I suppose there are some of you that will want to leave us and travel to other parts of the country. We will miss you while you’re away, and we’ll be thinking of you when we drive by your home. Please be sure to make arrangements so that your landscape stays looking nice.

I know some of the non-flying wildlife are cute and look absolutely harmless. Nevertheless, it is not a good idea to feed them or leave scraps of food for them. They are still wild animals and are capable of providing for themselves. Not only is feeding them against our rules as stated in the Owner & Resident Handbook, but it is illegal in Pima County. It can also attract rodents.

I hope everyone enjoys the last of spring and you stay safe and healthy.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle!

To HOA or Not to HOA Or Be Careful What You Wish For

We were excited when we found the house in Mesa, Arizona. The development was designed and built to be a gated community, but the developer changed his mind after it was completed. We got a great location, one-story with office, stucco and tile, a three-car garage, and four large shade trees. The big park at the end of the block had a large ramada with tables and grills. The basketball and volleyball courts, and shaded children’s play area were stellar, and no Homeowners Association (HOA). No dues, no assessments, and no one telling us what to do. Jackpot!

The developer attached CC&R’s (covenants, conditions, and restrictions) to each deed, but with no HOA, enforcing them required going to Mesa civil courts. He gave the park to the city of Mesa, so they handled the landscaping and watering. They maintained the designated dog area, supplied bags and trash cans and emptied them regularly. What could go wrong?

It was great for a few years. Most of the homeowners knew each other, and there was a great sense of community. I biked every street and was startled when I rolled by the garish fuchsia house one day. It stuck out like a sore thumb. Shortly after that, the bright blue one appeared. Oops.

In 2008, some homes were converted to rentals. Since there were no controls enforced, street parking became a thing. There were as many as eight cars parked on the street at one house. Property upkeep declined. The weeds on some lots were bad, and a couple of houses looked vacant. Some people abandoned their pets when they moved, so the strays became a problem.

When the development’s perimeter wall needed repair and painting, a small group of us got estimates and went door-

to-door to gather funds. We needed $100/house to do the walls, buy new plants for both entries and refurbish the community signs. Some paid more, some paid less and a few slammed the door in my face. Only 20 of us volunteered to landscape the entries. It took some time, but without regular attention they started to look run down again.

After retiring, our east neighbor decided to open a small-engine mechanic shop in his garage. He also rescued two dogs that barked all night if left outside. Each time we asked him to control the noise, he did nothing. After many nights with little sleep, we called the police and complained. Their warning helped, but strained the relationship further.

The new west neighbor had five dogs, and they loved to bark. When our north neighbor brought home “the Howler,” we almost lost our minds. Resolution attempts with those neighbors only kept Howler in at night. Don’t ask about the neighbor who kept misdirecting their irrigation for months after we first expressed our concern. It caused a section of the common wall to spall and crumble.

What started out with so much promise left Kent and I wanting an HOA. We are very happy that we found SCOV.

We want its clear standards around property upkeep, common area maintenance, support of wonderful amenities, responsible financial management and guidelines to control the potential unraveling of resident behavior. We see the HOA as a way to maintain property values and the viability of the community rather than as an interference or nuisance.

Whatever you choose, please be sure to find a place that reinforces your decision. Life is too short for the aggravation of a mismatch.

Your Voice Matters

At a recent Board meeting’s call to the audience, a resident mentioned how they were not on the Board or a committee or a task force, but wanted their input included in various projects (like the configuration of the Copper building). They asked how their input could be included. What a great question. There are many ways for all residents to be a part of the discussions about projects.

First, Board and committee meetings are open to residents. These are the meetings where projects are discussed and planned and recommendations are made. Agendas are posted in a timely manner on the website, and there is a call to the audience for resident input. Board meeting agendas are emailed to residents, so the topics are readily available to see if you want to participate in the conversation.

Secondly, when there are big projects, such as purchasing the Copper building or now, how that building might be utilized, there are chats and forums where configuration and uses of the building are the specific topic of discussion. There is usually an update or report at the beginning of the meeting and then time for input at the end or throughout the meeting. At one such meeting regarding the renovation of the Activity Center, discussion about the kitchen configuration was the topic. One resident in the audience made a suggestion to eliminate a door between the storage room and the kitchen and add a double door in the Auditorium to the storage room. This is exactly how it’s configured now. A light bulb went off for those at the meeting, the architect was contacted, and the adjustment made. Resident input matters.

Now is the time to get involved, as the Copper building and related projects such as the hard courts and exercise pools are hashed out. Watch the agendas for these committees and the Board, attend meetings and bring your expertise and suggestions. We are better together, and your voice matters.

ARC and In-House Submittals for Changes to the Exterior of your Home

Almost any kind of upgrade to the exterior of your home requires some sort of HOA approval. There are three kinds of submittals and specific processes are involved in each type.

Some submittals which are relatively straightforward are classified under what we call In-House Submittals. They require an “In-House Submittal Form” and a process that has no fee attached, because they are handled by the office. The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) does not get directly involved. These can generally be turned around in one-totwo business days.

The ARC reviews the remaining two types of submittals. One is a regular “ARC Submittal” which addresses projects like partial window replacement, walls, fencing and gates, major landscaping, etc. The other concerns expansions on your property such as room additions and patio covers of various types. Expansions are processed in a different way compared to regular ARC submittals and often require identification of an “idea or concept” prior to a Final Submittal. Details about the expansion processes are found in SCOV Board Policy ARC-006 on our website under Members > Documents.

Because there are so many types of forms to address various projects, the initial request you make on the website is the first of a two-step process. In the first communication, you are identifying yourself and your project’s type, in addition to requesting a plot plan of your property and the correct form. Once that has been submitted, we reply to your request with the plot plan, directions and link to the correct form.

If this process seems daunting or you need assistance, please feel free to contact the Architectural Coordinator at scoroval@ciramail.com and Katy Mosier will assist you.

Next meeting Mon., Mar. 13, 3 PM, WC1

The author event with Anne Hillerman in January was amazing. Her new book, Way of the Bear, is on the Library’s purchase list and is due to be released on April 25. We hope to have Anne return to SCOV in the future.

A heartfelt thank you to the Friends of the Library for the Great Reads presentation. If you need some help in choosing that next great book, the Great Reads notebook is available in the Library; come and see what readers in SCOV recommend.

The Library will host three authors this month: Jennifer Coburn, Kristina McMorris and Tom Zoellner. More information is under Coming Events. Tickets for author events are always free and available in the Library. Tickets help us ensure we have enough seating. Watch “This Week In SCOV” for exact dates of ticket availability.

The Tucson Festival of Books is March 4 and 5 on the University of Arizona campus. You can find author schedules and much more at Tucsonfestivalofbooks.org. The Library has copies of former SCOV Librarian, Kate Cusumano’s festival tips as well as maps. We also have a new reference binder listing the books of participating authors by our favorite genres. Those highlighted are available in our Library.

Tips for Using Exercise Machines at the Gym

Whether you are using cardio equipment, free weights or strength-training machines, there are a few basic guidelines you should follow at the gym to make your experience safe and enjoyable. Be mindful of time limits, especially on cardio machines. There is a 30-minute limit during busy periods. Sit on equipment only when you are using it to exercise. Other exercisers may be waiting to use a machine, so don’t use it as a resting spot. Wipe down equipment before and after use, and leave it clean for the next user. Leave your cell phone in the locker room. If you don’t know how to use a piece of equipment, don’t be afraid to ask. Lonnie Davis, Health and Fitness Coordinator, can guide you through proper machine selection and setup. He can also assist in making sure you have good form while using the equipment so that your workout is not only safe, but also effective and enjoyable.

This month’s presentation is by Dr. Robert Mitchell from Oro Valley Eyecare. What do the eye, the brain and the bagpipes have in common? Come find out. Join us on Friday, March 10, 1 PM, Activity Center/Auditorium.

The Active Health Committee will also be concluding our series on prevention and reversal of cognitive decline, led by Rick Menet, M.D. Join us as we wrap it up and answer your questions, Friday, March 3, 3 PM, Catalina Vista.

If you are leaving us for the summer, please take a moment to address any water features or pools you have on your property. Any standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and will attract other pests and critters during the hot summer months. Fountains and ponds are best drained and cleaned before you leave. You might consider using a pool mosquito tablet such as Mosquito Dunks or other products to prevent the growth of mosquito larvae in your pool. Secure covers that seal over the pool are also helpful. Please remember that our Master Declaration Section 4.6 states: “No owner shall permit anything or condition to exist upon any lot which shall induce, breed, or harbor infectious plant diseases or noxious insects.” We thank you for helping us enjoy our summer here at SCOV.

Architectural Review

Jim Cherry 612-805-5637 ARC@suncityorovalley.com

Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

Idea equals concept. We have a policy involving patio covers and room additions. Board Policy ARC-006 is your first and best step before you hire an architect or contractor.

It might be that your idea falls within an area of your house model than can afford a more expedient review/approval process, and ARC-006 outlines where that is possible. Other ideas are outside what was originally designed. In these instances, you want to get with the Architectural Review Committee through the Concept Application process. This path allows you to find out if what you would like to do is permitted by the Development Standards. It also gives you an opportunity to tap into committee members who have seen what others had done in SCOV.

Community Directory

Chair Blythe Campbell 907-717-7546 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

Did you know that the SCOV community directory is separate from the Administration’s HOA database? Here are a few ways the SCOV community directory, updated monthly, is used:

1. Online directory: It is located in the Members Only area of the SCOV website. You can show or hide columns, sort columns and search.

2. Posse: You can be unlisted in the directory but still provide a phone number so the Posse can contact you if needed.

3. Party planners: You can request contact information for all listed residents by their unit, state, etc.

One feature of the directory that helps people get to know each other is the “former occupation” field. At one time, nearly everyone in SCOV was retired, so we don’t list that as an occupation. Now, we have more residents who are still working.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List

Elaine sculpts gourds and then uses long pine needles to weave on them. After carving the gourd, she dyes the outside, drills holes around the gourd, then prepares the pine needles, softening them to be able to work with them. Elaine also makes silver pendants from the prickly inside of the gourd (using lost wax casting) and makes pendants from Mata Ortiz pottery shards.

Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1 (currently not meeting)

Loan Room hours: Tue., Thu., 8-9 AM

www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/loan-room/

The Loan Room continues to be a busy place this time of the year, since many residents have visitors coming, some with small children. We recommend that you make reservations up to two months in advance of when you need items, either on the website or at the Loan Room. We also try to accommodate walk-ins. Most medical items are always available and are loaned for a two-month period; tables, chairs, beds and children’s items are a two-week loan. We recently purchased several more tri-fold mattresses as these have proven to be very popular. Most items are on a first-come basis.

Please do not leave items outside the door that you are returning or want to donate We cannot always accept donations due to a lack of space or type of item. The Loan Room is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM.

The Community Assistance Committee aluminum can collection program has begun again and is part of the ongoing support for the Loan Room. We thank those of you who have been holding your cans for us.

Spring is right around the corner, and here are spring cleaning reminders concerning your yards:

• Trees must be trimmed up at least seven feet over side-

walks, and not block visibility of stop signs.

• Plants should not extend out over sidewalks, and frost damaged parts of the shrubs and trees should be cut off and removed.

• Cracks in driveways, sidewalks and where the cement meets the asphalt in the street are the responsibility of homeowners to keep weed-free.

• Hedges anywhere in the yard are not to be over six feet tall.

• Shrubs near the entrance of a driveway should be cut to less than 42” in height so as not to block visibility of vehicles and pedestrians.

• Make sure your house number is visible from the street and that all lights in the fixture are lit, so it can be seen at night.

• Outside light bulbs are not to exceed 250 lumens per Oro Valley regulations.

Thank you for your help in keeping SCOV a beautiful community.

First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis www.scovaz.com/members/committees/posse

If you are going for a walk at night alone, with a spouse or friend, or taking the dog for a walk, remember to wear lightcolored clothing so you can be seen. A flashlight is also good to take along. Safety is always important, and there have been a few times that Posse volunteers have come upon walkers they didn’t see until the last minute. While Posse volunteers drive slowly, you might not be so lucky with other drivers. We value all our residents, so remember to be safe. Call Linda Simōn at 520-789-7169 to get information on how to join the Posse.

The eight solar systems installed at various SCOV facilities are operating as designed and are saving the Association about $120,000 per year. Currently, solar-generated power is not furnished to the AFC. As a result, all of the electricity consumed at the AFC is purchased from TEP. The Properties Committee is working on a project to install a solar power system at the AFC. The project would cost $358,000 and save approximately $31,000 per year in energy costs. Overall net savings to SCOV over the 25-year life of the project would be about $442,000. These savings are in addition to the $358,000 initial cost, a 10% contingency factor, and $100,000 asset reserve funding for replacement. The system would also further reduce SCOV’s carbon footprint. We meet monthly in person and via Zoom. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.

Golf

520-917-8063

March is the beginning of the busy season for golf course maintenance. The weather begins to warm up, and the chance of rain decreases. These changes in weather conditions lead to many new challenges on the golf course, including a growth surge of fairway and tee grasses, Poa annua seed production in overseeded areas, and weed growth around desert edges.

The warmer weather causes the soil temperatures to rise, which releases more nutrients available to the grass. The problem is that the grass begins to grow faster than it can be mowed. This leads to higher fuel and labor costs for the increased rate of mowing, and more grass clippings need to be cleaned off the fairways. The warmer weather also starts the Poa annua bloom on the fairways. One of the ways to slow the grass growth and control Poa annua flowering is by applying a growth regulator.

However, the warmer weather also starts greening up the Bermuda grass that wasn’t overseeded this past winter. The dormant grass on the greens will slowly start to grow. This growth will help regulate green speeds by adjusting mowing height and frequency, as well as start healing up the old plugs from cutting new cups. When the plugs start to recover, the second cup on the green will be removed and the cups will be moved daily.

Also, the non-overseeded aprons will begin to grow which

Wow, what a grand beginning to the 2023 season. We have welcomed many new members to our fun and exciting group of golfers. There has been steady growth in the league, and we are now 93 strong.

Since the mornings are getting warmer, our Nine-Hole League play is more comfortable and scores are going back down mainly because we don’t have to dress like the little brother in the movie, A Christmas Story

Our final outdoor meeting and Burger Bash was February 9. The exciting news for our golf group, and everyone else in SCOV, is having the Activity Center open again. That allows us to once again have our April 6 annual end-of-the- season meeting in that beautiful building. It has been a long two years since we were able to have meetings there. We are looking forward to all of our members attending this meeting to help celebrate the building’s renovation and to celebrate the winners of this year’s club tournament.

Here are some dates to put on your calendars:

• End-of-season club tournament on March 9, 16 and 23.

• Cure for Cancer Tournament is Sunday, March 12. Come play or buy raffle tickets.

• Awards ceremony and raffle Thursday, April 6. That’s it from your friendly neighborhood Nine-Hole Men’s Club.

SCOV bustles in winter/ spring and your Foundation is hopping as well. The Foundation-funded Bistro in the newly renovated Activity Center is now open. Drop in, visit with friends and enjoy a morning cup of coffee or an afternoon glass of wine.

January’s Foundationsponsored Dispose-A-Med was a huge success with nearly 200 pounds of unwanted or expired medicines collected.

We’re thrilled to report that we made our $10,000 match, meaning that new and increased donations in the year-end campaign totaled more than $10,000. Thanks to everyone who donated, for your generosity means the Foundation can award more grants to SCOV clubs. And it is still not too late to give. The Foundation relies on year-round gifts to support its work to enhance our wonderful community.

Finally, Saturday, April 1, 8-10 AM, the Foundation will once again sponsor a free shredding event. If your file cabinets are filled with no longer needed documents, bring those papers for secure disposal to the Vistoso Community Church, 1200 E. Rancho Vistoso.

Now that the Activity Center has reopened, find time to explore the community art that has been installed to celebrate the renewed space. You will find colorful quilts anchoring coordinated paintings, photographs, weavings, glass, pottery and sculpture. You may also decide to grab a coffee at The Bistro and sit awhile, maybe hear someone play the piano and just enjoy the atmosphere. Thanks to the great crew from various art clubs who hang art for the Art League in our Association buildings. This installation took several hours and a dozen workers to make it come together. You all are terrific.

Bark carvers use cottonwood bark as their medium. The bark is soft and easy to carve, lending itself to carving whimsical gnome houses, interesting faces, or almost anything you can imagine. We have carvers who are willing to teach you how it is done and even some carving tools to get you started. Join us Tuesday afternoons or Thursday mornings.

Japanese Flower Arranging

Donald Marier 520-825-4878 dolmar21@gmail.com

Nov.-May, Second and Fourth Mon., 2-4 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

Knit and Crochet

Jane Fairchild 520-909-5069 janemail11@yahoo.com

Tue., 2:30-4:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats.

If you wish to donate bags, flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one, no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Do not include newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way.

Second Fri., 9 AM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge www.scovaz.com/clubs/modelers

Have you ever thought it might be fun to build a model, an opportunity to do something different in your life? But maybe you don’t know where to begin. What tools and supplies are needed? Where do you get them? How much do they cost? Would you be willing to make the investment, only to discover that it wasn’t for you? If any of these concerns have been keeping you from trying modeling, the Modelers Club has an answer. We’ve assembled several sets of tools and supplies needed to build a typical model kit (shown here by club President Fred Faust). They are yours to try for free. We’ll even throw in a free kit to build a boat, train, plane or car. To find out more, come to one of our monthly meetings, call the number above or stop at the Artisan Center.

Trace Getz recently provided information and instruction on “Thinking Outside…The Displace Case.” Trace has created several sculptures that he enjoys in his yard. In a recent class, he shared what he has learned along the way with creating and placing polymer clay sculptures outdoors. Location, placement, and positioning were identified as the primary issues to consider. Trace also covered various forms of armatures, issues with using wood as a base, the use of acrylics versus oil paints and how to protect a sculpture from the Arizona environment.

The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets Tuesday mornings, Sewing Room. If you are interested in our group, stop by between 9-11 AM. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People involved in other arts using fiber are invited and encouraged to join our group.

The picture is a project recently finished by Sue Joyce. As you can see, she designed the hooked cushion to go with her bench.

Sue used different weights of yarn to give the piece texture. Since this piece of furniture is used outdoors, Sue used acrylic yarn rather than wool. This is the second project that Sue has completed. The project took several months to complete, and the results are fabulous. Sue is already designing her next project which will be a pillow much smaller in scale than the bench cushion.

Slithering snow spirits sift across the road

Wind-whipped ice needles prick my face

Piercing wind’s frozen fingers grip my hunched shoulders

Behind the house a young deer nestles comfortably in the snow. “

Dates for the show are Saturday, April 1, and Sunday, April 2. An announcement for the date of ticket sales will be published in “This Week in SCOV” a few weeks prior to the production. Tickets are still $10, and there will be open seating with no limit of tickets per purchase. Also, the monthly meeting of the Theatre Club is Thursday, March 16, 10:30 AM, Desert Oasis.

The Starlight dancers did a lively demonstration at the Activity Center open house on January 14. It’s a wonderful facility and we were glad to be part of the celebration. The March dance will be a belated nod to St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday, March 18, Activity Center/Auditorium, 5:30-8 PM. The cost is $20 for members and $30 for nonmembers. Call or email president Sara Harney for more information.

Every Wednesday, we gather at 5 PM in AFC/Studios 1 & 2 for open practice. We show one another dance steps, laugh and have drinks or dinner together at The Views afterwards. Everyone is welcome to our dances or practices.

Pilates

Understanding the Pilates principles takes a little time and patience, because some of the exercises are different from others that are familiar to us. They are all fun and challenging. It has been said that Pilates can become addictive. It teaches proper balance, breathing, focus on your core (abdomen and back muscles) and movement control. Results include the development of more strength and stamina. Posture is improved and joint flexibility and mobility increase. Two experienced instructors conduct the mat Pilates classes for us, and they can modify any of the moves for you, if necessary. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please stop by and watch a class or join us. Call Mary.

Hiking

Scheduled hikes are posted on the website www.scovhiking.org

March is one of our last full hiking months before the temperature gets too warm. If you would like to join the Hiking Club, go to our website, find the hike schedule and sign up for the Orientation Hike. Please remember as the temperatures warm up to give yourself time to acclimate and to prevent heat exhaustion. Drink more water than you think you need and take electrolytes. Some of the early signs of heat exhaustion are yawning, fatigue and light headedness. March is also the month of our annual meeting where there will be a guest speaker, election of club officers for the year, snacks and a chance to visit with friends. This year our annual meeting is Saturday, March 25, 2 PM, in the newly remodeled Activity Center/Native American Rooms. Hope to see everyone on the trails this month enjoying a variety of hikes. Stay healthy and happy.
