From the Board of Directors
Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.
All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online. Board meetings are open to residents.
Board of Directors - Tod Milton Director
theodore.r.milton@gmail.com
One of the true and real strengths of the Sun City community is the many and diverse committees that work throughout the year to ensure that our community thrives. All of these committees are comprised of motivated and experienced residents. Their sole aim and purpose is to make certain that Sun City continues to thrive and prosper now and into the future. At present, there are 24 different active and ad hoc committees that are working to address a whole series of initiatives focused on making and keeping Sun City a great place to live.
To address each and every committee would far exceed the narrow confines of this effort, so I will narrow the focus to one, the Properties Committee. The Properties Committee is made up of nine to twelve resident volunteers with extensive engineering background and decades of experience. Twice a year, this team inspects every building, facility and amenity of our community. This is not simply a high-level pass through, but an in-depth down-on-their-knees inspection. The team heads out in the fall, compiles a list of items for review and repair and submits that report to the Board of Directors and to the SCOV General Manager. In addition, they work very closely with the SCOV Facility Manager to coordinate projects and work plans. This committee and team have no agenda other than ensuring our facilities are in good working order and projects are accomplished in a fiscally responsible manner.
This committee, along with the Long-Range Planning Committee, Architectural Review Committee, Finance and Budget Committee, Aquatics & Fitness Center Advisory Committee, Golf Advisory Committee and all of the others have the expertise, knowledge and desire to keep SCOV moving forward in a responsible way. They steer our growth and manage the changes so necessary in keeping SCOV the best place to live now and in the future.
The Board and all of our residents thank the volunteers comprising our committees for their work, and we support them fully.
General Manager - Sandy Seddon
We are currently focusing on several deferred maintenance projects that have been on our radar for some time. These efforts are crucial for maintaining the overall integrity and safety of our facilities. By addressing these outstanding issues, we aim to enhance operational efficiency, extend the lifespan of our assets and improve the experiences of all who use our buildings and spaces.
Our approach prioritizes the most critical needs while also planning for future maintenance to prevent backlogs. This includes everything from routine checks to more significant repairs that may have been postponed due to budgetary constraints. We are committed to ensuring that our environment remains safe and welcoming, and we appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as we navigate these projects.
The priority currently is the tile and foam roofs at the Activity Center, Restaurant and Welcome Center. We also found a contractor to address holes number three and four on our mini golf. We expect that work to be completed by the end of the year.
I would like to thank the Properties Committee for their semi-annual inspection of the facilities. They provided management with an extremely comprehensive report, and we are actively working through items that were brought to our attention.
Regular updates will be provided to keep everyone informed about our progress and any potential impacts on daily operations. Thank you for your patience.
As temperatures drop, people eagerly pull out their winter wardrobe—heavy coats, knitted scarves and fluffy gloves— preparing for the chilly weather. Winter is also a time for festivities. Holiday decorations adorn homes and streets, and the scent of winter treats, like cinnamon and hot chocolate, fills the air. It is the season of celebration, with gatherings and traditions that bring loved ones together.
Wishing you a joyful holiday season filled with warmth and cheer. Happy holidays from the entire SCOV team.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! Holidays in The Desert
by Carla Green
Tucson and the surrounding area transforms into a festive wonderland during the holiday season, offering a blend of cultural traditions, amazing light displays, and breathtaking desert landscapes. The region’s unique blend of Native American, Mexican, and Western influences creates a distinctive holiday atmosphere that is as warm and inviting as the winter sun.
One of the highlights of the holiday season is the Winterhaven Festival of Lights in Tucson. For more than 70 years, this beloved tradition has brought together locals and visitors to stroll through a neighborhood transformed by dazzling light displays. Horse-drawn carriage rides, live holiday music, and festive food vendors add to the magic, creating an experience that embodies the spirit of community. Nothing beats taking a carriage ride with hot chocolate on a cold desert night with Christmas carols in the background. Another rich annual Tucson holiday tradition is The Nutcracker performed by Ballet Tucson in partnership with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. It’s a delightful performance to experience. ZooLights at Reid Park Zoo is a wonderful tradition the whole family can enjoy all through December. This year they will feature a gingerbread house and 35-foot luminated tree perfect for family photos. Not far from Sun City is the 13th Annual Oro Valley Festival of the Arts & Holiday Tree Lighting Celebration, December 6th and 7th. Tohono Chul's Holiday Nights provides a holiday sing along, telescopes for stargazing and other forms of entertainment on the weekends through December. The Tucson Botanical Gardens host, “The Festival of Illumination” over 1 million LED lights illuminate the trees and custom-built structures Tuesday through Sunday.
Many local restaurants and bakeries embrace the season by offering unique takes on holiday classics. Don’t miss out on biscochitos, a traditional anise-flavored cookie popular in the Southwest. Pair them with a cup of coffee or tea for an authentic taste of the region. Tamales are a must-try holiday treat, often made by families and shared as gifts. Pozole is a festive dish usually enjoyed throughout the holiday season. Traditional Mexican hot chocolate (Champurrado) provides the perfect way to warm up on chilly desert evenings.
The holidays are a time of joy, reflection, and celebration, blending the warmth of community with the enchantment of desert landscapes. Whether you’re exploring cultural traditions, marveling at dazzling light displays, or savoring delicious regional cuisine, this unique corner of the Southwest offers a holiday experience unlike any other. Embrace the magic of the season and discover why Southern Arizona is a fantastic place to celebrate the holidays.

Update: SCOV Transitioning to Northstar Software
The transition to Northstar (NS) software is progressing. As of November 1, SCOV's staff has been using the new system for member management, conveyance, covenant compliance, rentals, home submittals and work orders. This shift requires rethinking established processes, which has been challenging, but staff remain committed to delivering excellent service while adapting to the software’s capabilities.
After a month of practice, the team will now start using the software for reporting and refining processes. In January, SCOV will transition to email communication within Northstar, coinciding with the launch of a new website and member portal. This site will feature a calendar, room and court reservations, ticket purchases and event announcements. Preparations for 2025 events reveal 6,830 items requiring 15,514 hours of room reservations. I know many are eager to learn more about the calendar and room reservations. Over the coming months, we’ll share additional details as we adapt this process to the new software-stay tuned.
Resident testing of the new website began in November and continues through January. All current site functions will carry over, though the transition will require learning new workflows. Classes, videos and support will ease this shift. The member portal will allow residents to view property details, update profiles, manage community directory visibility, view balances, purchase tickets and make reservations. These functions will also be available through an app.
This transition is both challenging and exciting. Thank you for your patience and support
As part of incorporating the new Northstar software into our ARC submittal process, we have a new email address for all submittal correspondence.
Please add this email to your contact list so that our emails will reach your inbox rather than going to your junk mail.
The new email address is project@suncityorovalley.com. Any forms or links that the Architectural Coordinator may send to you will automatically be revised with the new address.
Please delete scoroval@ciramail.com from your contact list.

Exercise Early
Exercising early in the morning is one of the best ways to stay active during the holidays, as it can be too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle and forget to make time for fitness. Waking up just a few minutes earlier than usual can help you get those endorphins flowing and give you an extra burst of energy to get through the day's festivities. Not only that but getting your exercise finished first means you don't have to worry about squeezing it in later when other commitments start taking priority. Since fewer people are likely to be out this early, you'll avoid the crowds and stress. Whether going for a jog outdoors or doing an at-home workout routine, exercising early in the morning during the holidays is sure to help keep you energized and strong.
Special Note from the AFC:
Orientation on using the gym equipment is held Thursdays, 1 pm. Stop in and signup. Classes are limited.

Featured artists for December are Ellen Jordano and Elaine Woods. Ellen is from Minnesota. The minute she retired she decided she was not going to stay in the land of ice and snow during the winter months. “My husband and I visited some friends of ours here in Sun City; we rented a home for the next winter and then we bought a house. I went to an introductory class in fused glass and decided it was for me. I make functional projects: bowls, appetizer/dessert plates, serving trays, spoon rests and much more. I enjoy using what I make. It is a very relaxing hobby, and I’ve made some wonderful friends.”
Elaine is a mixed-media artist working with watercolor, gourds and sterling silver. She often inserts Mata Ortiz pottery shards into her silver jewelry projects. She also offers handmade cards and prints created with watercolors.

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf mkropf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063
December is historically the time of year when the temperatures get cold enough to start having frost. Just a reminder on what frost does to the grass and procedures to follow when a delay occurs: The cold weather lowers the soil temperatures and causes the bermudagrass to go dormant and turn brown. Walking or driving on frosted grass causes damage to green leaf tissue which eventually leads to the grass dying. When the non-overseeded areas go dormant and turn brown, they are no longer susceptible to frost damage, but the overseeded fairways and tees may be damaged. If the temperature is cold, but there is only spotty frost, golf carts could be restricted to the cart path for a determined amount of time. If the frost is more severe, the delay will reflect the earliest time the golf course can be prepared for golf and ready for play to start. This all depends on whether fairways and tees need to be mowed or pins need to be set up. When the Bermuda grass goes dormant and turns brown, the contrast to the dark green overseeded areas is beautiful. This change of color also indicates the correct areas to use seed mix to repair divots. We only use the seed mix in areas that remain green, and either use sand only or do nothing to repair divots in brown areas. The difference in color on the tees will be more difficult to see because the non-overseeded tees are painted green so they will not be brown like the roughs.

Christians observe December 25 as the birth of Christ, but its roots actually go back to early Rome. By the Middle Ages, Europeans had become more accepting of observing Christmas day, but not necessarily as the Church had intended. It would take several centuries and much turmoil for Christmas to become the religious observance we know today. It was June 26, 1870 that Christmas was declared an official federal holiday in America.
Hanukkah is a Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem and rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the 2nd Century, BCE. Hanukkah is also known as the Festival of Lights. It’s celebrated by an eightnight display of flames atop candles held in a candelabrum called a menorah.
No matter how or why each of us choose to celebrate the holiday, according to journalist Eric Sevareid, “it is important that we do so at least one day of the year so it reminds us that we’re here for something besides ourselves.”

Art League
Pres. Susan Taylor 719-205-6262 SusanCarolTaylor@aol.com
Resident Questions
“Can my art hang in one of the facilities?” Yes.The Art League’s mission is to support arts for established SCOV clubs. Those club members include: Photography, Sculpture, Open Arts Studio, Quilt Club, Clay Club. You must be a resident member of one of those clubs to hang art through the League. If you don’t find a good fit, please consider joining the Open Arts Studio, which supports a variety of art mediums.
“Is there a cost?” There is no cost to hang art through the League, although we ask for a small donation. SCOV charges a 10% fee for any sale.
“Do I have to be a member of the artisan club?” Yes. The League’s function is to support clubs, and we leave the mechanics of each art medium to the individual club. Things such as requirements of size, hanging, and such are left to the artisan club.

Pres., Mary Murck 612-205-0084 mmurck@earthlink.net www.scovclayclub.com
DO/Saguaro Room
With seasonal residents returning eager for new classes, the Clay Studio is in full swing. Recently, Jeryl Cundiff instructed both new and advanced members on how to form hollow spheres. Spheres can be utilized for several projects. Simply by slicing open the sphere, a jar can then be made by smoothing out the interior. Unlimited possibilities exist for decorating the outside of the jar.
Another use that is popular is to make whimsical birds by attaching appendages to the sphere in creative ways. Birds made in this way have interesting personalities and can be glazed to the limits of the imagination.
Stop by our Clay and Glaze Studio windows this month when looking for holiday gifts. Many beautiful thrown and hand-built pieces will be available for sale. Even if you are not in the market, it’s just fun to look.
Our next general meeting is Thursday, December 5, 1 pm, DO/Saguaro.

The Sculpture Club meets on Mondays, CV/Art Studio. If you are interested in becoming a member or learning more about our club, stop in on Monday morning or contact Dale Foster. Our sculpture pieces are in the glass case and art room window inside Catalina Vista, a showcase outside of the library, and inside the library.
The picture shows the sculptures that were completed by participants in a workshop in August that Bob Goulding taught on using project foam as a armature for a sculpture. Bob provided a template that participants could use, or they could use their own design. The process of creating these sculptures was described in the Club’s October 2024 Tipster article. It is interesting to see how each person chose to design and finish their sculptures. Bob also provided the wood base for most of the sculptures in this picture.

Seniors for Kids would like to invite all SCOV residents to come Thursday, December 5, 9 am, WC3 to view the many things that have been created and collected to distribute to the children we serve. At 9:30 am, all the items will be boxed and start their journey to the children.
December is the month that Seniors for Kids empties all their shelves and sends toys and warm things that make needy children smile. We need to end it with a thank you to all the support we received from the SCOV community, the volunteers that keep Seniors For Kids designing and producing the many items, the cash and material donations that are given by members of the community, and to the Administration who helps with our fundraisers. Kuddles for Kids was a great success as always. Thank you to everyone for loving children enough to share in putting smiles on their faces. If helping children in need would get your creative juices flowing, stop by the artisan rooms and see where your skills might help Seniors for Kids.

The sewing groups under Thimblelenas depend on donated materials for many of the items made every year for local charities. We are always in need of used bed sheets (never used as cactus covers). These are cut up and sewn into crib sheets. Also needed are t-shirt backs or fronts too, if they are blank. These are made into newborn infants hats. Any donated items can be dropped off at the sewing room. Club members can reserve a spot to work on personal projects, during open sewing sessions, by using the SignUp.com app. Once you have received the appropriate training you will have access to all our wonderful equipment. We invite you to stop by during any of the scheduled club sessions to learn more about what Thimblelenas has to offer.
Cheer Bears

As December and the Holidays land on our plate, we need to look back over our year and realize how thankful we are for the help we can provide for the community. In doing so, we are giving joy to the children and hospice patients who receive the Cheer Bears. LIVING IS GIVING and GIVING IS LIVING.
We are sending our bears to their new homes this month with the toy distributions in full swing. Many children need extra comfort in these trying times. We need to add new
bears to be sent out in the year to come. Please come and join our cheery group.
If in sorting and cleaning out, you find some polyester fiberfill, we are in need of it to plump up the tummies of the bears. Donations are always accepted.

The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. If you are interested in our group, stop by. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. Carrie Wiley has just started a new project. She is in the picture hooking with her traveling frame and stand. Typically, Carrie would only bring a frame to our group, but her new project is so large she needed to hook on the frame with the stand. Her new project is on the right in the picture. The actual size will be approximately 4’ x 5’. Carrie has titled this project “Coming Home” reminiscent of her and her husband, Eric’s days of sailing. Carrie is dying the wool that she will be using in the hooking to get the colors that she desires. She will be using a combination of different sizes of cut wool strips for hooking the project.

Feature artist Patty Ullmann has been working on creating copper pieces of jewelry using the rolling mill to create patterns in the copper. She is now trying air chasing copper. These pieces need to be frequently annealed to a high temperature to remove internal stresses, making the copper easier to bend, shape and chase designs into the copper.
Patti also works with clay, creating very unique and original pieces of art. She loves watching YouTube to see how these techniques are created and looks for inspiration on Etsy.

In “The Painting” by Poets Corner member John Padgett, the writer addresses a piece of artwork that doesn’t meet his expectations, a lamentation that easily arouses sympathy and understanding. The poem also opens doors to a wider and deeper interpretation about one’s personal life or even the health of the world and our planet. The ending of another year may be the right time for such assessments, but let’s not forget to celebrate as well.
“Oh, damned ugly painting! what depredation has my hand wrought?
Don’t I have anything better to do than soil printing paper or canvas with muddy color and misplaced marks?
Does any of this get better or is it just another terminal patient sliding into the void no matter what ministrations are applied?”
Send a poem you’ve written to our group of welcoming poets, read it at our weekly zoom meeting and receive helpful feedback.

Conscious aging is about the inner work of reorienting ourselves as we turn from our roles we assumed while managing careers and tending families, to turning inward and cultivating a deeper awareness of who we are now. Our goal is to discover how to face the known and unknown challenges of aging. With the help of our community, we are pondering the questions: Who am I? What are my values? What do I believe? What matters most to me? This inner work is supported by mindful movement such as qigong, guided meditation and book study, which draws from psychology, sociology, metaphysics, philosophy and meditation. Conscious aging is about accepting who we are now. Our meetings consist of a short period of easy mindful movement, followed by guided meditation and discussion. Please contact Phyllis for information, or email the club.

Nature Club
Pres. Alice Hutchison 520-329-8090, ahutchison87@gmail.com Tue., Dec 3, 2 pm, AC/Kiva Room. The Nature Club First Official Meeting.
We are fortunate to live in this wonderful desert environment. The Sun City Nature Club aspires to increase awareness of the natural environment within Sun City. We seek peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife by engaging the community in programs and projects to protect our flora and fauna.
Everyone is invited to the Nature Club’s first meeting Tuesday, December 3, 2 pm, AC/Kiva. Our local wildlife photographer, Sheryl Hester, will present a fascinating (and sometimes humorous) slide show of Sun City’s wildlife. Our featured speaker will be Laura Couchman, a Pima County master naturalist and a field trip leader for the Tucson Audubon Society. Laura will talk about fall/winter birding in our area, bird migration and good locations for birding.
Everyone will receive the new Sun City Nature Club brochure which provides an overview of our wildlife and offers tips to live in harmony with them. Meetings are the first Tuesday of the month, 2 pm, AC/Kiva.
Members of the club enjoy getting to know some of their SCOV neighbors and friends who like cooking and eating interesting food. In October the club hosted a tailgate party and in November a Caribbean Vibes kickoff dinner. Themed dinners take place December through March in members’ homes. Everyone brings part of the meal, so there is not a huge effort for the host. If you have questions or would like information on joining, checkout our club website or contact Debbie Kotlarek at the email above.

Compared to other regions of the country, those of us here in SCOV from New Jersey and Pennsylvania are in the minority, but we bring with us many good memories. While we are very happy to have retired here, it is always good to share memories from the Jersey shore, the Poconos and the many other great places we considered haunts back in our younger days. Our club now has 50 members and is growing, so if you have a connection with either of these states, come and join us. We will have our next potluck Friday, January 17, and are looking forward to happy hours in the spring when the weather warms.

We meet when the air temperature is 77 degrees or warmer, as recommended by the Arthritis Foundation. Our club performs gentle water exercises which target all muscles and are used by several health organizations to increase strength and balance, and to increase mobility and flexibility. Water exercise is especially helpful to manage arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Some new members have expressed surprise at how quickly the first couple of sessions already increased their abilities to move. Others comment on improved stamina. New members are always welcome. Our members are fun, accepting and welcoming. We frequently hear, “I came for the exercises and love all the friends I have made." The SCOV Pilates Club offers group mat classes Mondays 3-4 pm and Thursdays 1:30-2:30 pm. Each person is striving to increase their core strength. The core muscles are deep abdominal and back muscles that help you stabilize your pelvis and spine. Each class begins with warm-up exercises. The actual Pilates exercises result in benefits that can't be beat: better balance (fewer falls), more flexibility (joints move again), increased muscle tone (you're stronger) and more energy and well being. The instructors always oversee us and suggest modifications for the most strenuous exercises for anyone with limitations. The cost is $8 cash per class and annual club dues each January are $20 pp. Call Mary with questions.

The winter tai chi session begins January 2. The course consists of 10 classes held weekly on Thursday mornings. It is led by Sensei Donna Drazenovich, 2nd degree black belt in karate, and Assistant Instructor Kyt-Tee Kohout. Each 90-minute class begins with 30 minutes of Qigong followed by 60 minutes of Tai Chi instruction. Instruction for beginners is given separately from those students more experienced. You may observe the first class before committing to the full course.
Tai chi is a gentle, low impact mind-body exercise. It is both a martial art and meditation and is known for its health benefits. Many medical professionals recommend tai chi for improving balance as well as building muscle strength and reducing stress. Please check with your doctor if you have any medical concerns.
Practice sessions are offered year-round to support our club members. For more information, email SCOVTaiChi@ gmail.com or contact Gail.

Bocce players enjoy a good time and if you would like to be part of the group, just come to one of the playing sessions. We will gladly teach you the rules and give you some playing advice.
The Tucson Senior Olympic Bocce Tournament will be held at Sunflower Jan. 13-18. For more information, go to Google>Tucson Senior Olympics.

Hiking
Pres. Jacob O’Neill jakemponeill@gmail.com
Scheduled hikes are posted on the website www.scovhiking.org
Happy Holidays. Give yourself a gift this holiday season by joining the SCOV hiking club. Check out the many hikes offered this month at the SCOV hiking club website. Some hikes are close to home; others take you to areas you might not have been to before. All hikes are rated according to distance and elevation gain. To join sign up for an orientation hike (a requirement) at www.scovhiking.org. You will receive information from a hike leader and go on an introductory hike. After your orientation hike, and joining the club for a nominal annual fee, you may sign up for any of the hikes that interest you.
Hikes are usually posted by the 15th of each month posted on website, along with brief descriptions. Most hikes limit the number of hikers, so it is important to sign-up as early as you can to ensure a spot. Come hike with us.

Our new Board members will take office January 1. We want to sincerely thank our departing Board members, A.J. Leane and Michael Voellinger, for the great work they have done for our club.
Last month’s skills clinics were successful and will continue in the new year. Thanks to Denise Hartman and her instructors for helping our members improve their game.
