Garden Club Beautification Committee

This month I want to give a shoutout to a group of residents who are working to make our community more appealing to the eye. As you walk around SCOV, notice several areas where there have been upgrades in the decorative landscaping.

The Beautification Committee, a sub-committee of the Garden Club, is responsible for adding to the visual enjoyment in our beautiful community. This is a new project for the Garden Club, and they are a very enthusiastic group. All too frequently, when people spend their time on these endeavors, they go unrecognized. This Committee started by taking over the eleven large blue planter pots located in the walkway of the AFC toward the pool. The circular in-ground planters on the pool deck were then cleared out and five beautiful large blue pots have been planted for swimmers to enjoy. The boulders were placed for accent. Bringing attention to the new cactus fountain is the next project in the pool area enhancement. The committee has also replaced the ground cover in the Artisan Courtyard next to the whimsical totems, done in collaboration with the Clay Club and the Stained/Fused Glass Club. They have also placed two large blue planters on our newly refurbished Kiva patio. These potted plants are looked at every day by a member of the club, and they are hand-watered as needed. All of the plantings are maintained by the Committee, some for irrigation, some are hand-watered on a daily basis.

This hard-working group will be changing plantings at various times of the year to keep things looking fresh. They have worked well with our Common Area Maintenance crew on many of the changes and they often help with the plantings. They say they have just begun and have their eyes on other areas, as well.

If you have plants that no longer work for you, consider donating them to the Garden Club for possible use; they will be grateful for the thought. The Beautification Committee would like to express its gratitude for all the positive feedback and ask that residents please not water the plants

We have a new Service and Support Committee. Many thanks to those of you who have volunteered to serve on Emergency Preparedness. You can find their complete charter on our website, but their mission is to prepare a SCOV community emergency response plan for the risks appropriate to the area, along with making recommendations for individual household emergency plans. A community emergency response plan (CERP) is a written document that outlines the steps a community will take before, during, and after an emergency. It helps communities manage local activities to reduce the risk to people and property.

I now have one full month under my belt at SCOV. There are many moving parts, and I am working as quickly as possible to understand all aspects of the operation. While I may not know everything, I do know one thing: we must work together using responsible leadership for the well-being and smooth operation of the community. It is about balancing the needs and desires of individual members with what makes the most sense and will benefit the community as a whole. That sounds simple enough, but it is not always the case.

Listening to everyone is fundamental to responsible leadership, especially in a homeowner association. I am confident that moving forward we can create an environment where members are more likely to engage, participate and contribute positively to the community. It is not just about hearing words; it is about understanding the context, the concerns and the emotions behind them. This empathetic approach can lead to more harmonious and effective governance. Let’s work together.

Finally, it is hot out there. Remember, by the time you feel thirsty, you are already on your way to dehydration. So, keep a bottle of water handy and take regular sips throughout the day. Eat water-rich food such as fruits and vegetables. Avoid excessive beverages like alcohol and caffeine. Enjoy the rest of the summer and here’s to early fall.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! A Magical Monsoon Season

This 2024 monsoon season has been a captivating spectacle, showcasing the awe-inspiring power and unpredictability of nature. Southern Arizona is known for dramatic thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and sudden flash floods. The monsoon is a vital component for our climate and brings muchneeded moisture to the dry landscape. The rain not only nourishes the land but also fills the air with the earthy scent of creosote, a fragrance that is synonymous with the Sonoran Desert after a rainstorm. However, this year's monsoon has been particularly remarkable, marked by a series of extremes that leave everyone living here in awe.

An unexpected twist happened this year with monsoon starting early in June and by mid-July the monsoons are in full force, bringing with it a dramatic shift in weather patterns triggering a cascade of powerful thunderstorms, lighting and even a tornado or two in some parts. The usually lush and vibrant desert landscape remained parched most of the year, with temperatures soaring well above average. Many feared that the monsoon season would be a dud like last year, leaving Oro Valley and surrounding areas withering in the heat.

The skies over Sun City Oro Valley turned dark and ominous at a moment’s notice, as lightning illuminated the desert nights and thunder echoed across the valleys with high winds. We have experienced several days of torrential downpours, leading to a significant spike in rainfall. The city recorded one of its wettest monsoons on record, with some areas receiving over ten inches of rain in just a few weeks. Driving

throughout Oro Valley and the surrounding areas there have been many fallen trees, but the desert blooms, green mountains and thriving cacti have been breathtaking with the backdrop of rainbows and sunsets, plus the smell of the desert in the rain is unmatched. With all the dangers, the magnificent spectacle of the desert monsoon is something marveled at by all.

Exciting News: SCOV Transitioning to Northstar Software

We are thrilled to announce that SCOV will transition to a new software platform called Northstar for managing our HOA functions. Many HOAs, including SaddleBrooke Two and The Highlands, are also moving or have moved to this platform. Our new GM, Sandy Seddon, was already implementing this software at her previous HOA before joining us here at SCOV. Northstar has become an industry standard, addressing many functional needs of HOAs.

Northstar offers an integrated website and app, providing real-time information for residents. You’ll be able to update your information, such as summer and winter addresses, check account balances and track the status of applications (ARC) with ease. This new platform will consolidate many of the current software tools we use for communications, reservations, ticket sales and more. The new website will continue to provide board meeting and committee meeting minutes, agendas, and other valuable resources, with expanded features rolling out toward the end of the year.

Northstar is currently in initial meetings with our staff and resident IT team to understand our processes. They will soon set deadlines for information gathering and start setting up the software, website and app.

We aim to launch the new website in November, which is an ambitious goal, but we are working diligently towards it. A team of resident experts is collaborating with staff throughout this process and will assist residents when it’s time to introduce the new website and app.

Thank you for your support as this exciting transition is made.

The plethora of new titles coming out this fall is very exciting: Author, Louise Penny, The Grey Wolf (Chief Inspector Gamache); Richard Osman, We Solve Murders (Thursday Murder Club fame); Michael Connelly, The Waiting (A Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch Novel). Perhaps though, you’ve missed some of the summer best sellers that we have in our library.

Did you read When Women Ran Fifth Avenue by Julie Satow? This is “A glittering, glamorous portrait of the golden age of American department stores and of three visionary women who led them, from the award-winning author of The Plaza.

How about the much anticipated Eruption by Michael Crichton and James Patterson? “Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.”

In large print we have Tom Clancy’s new title, Act of Defiance. “When U.S. intelligence reports there’s something going on in Russia, President Jack Ryan and his youngest daughter, Katie, determine the Russians are about to launch a super missile submarine, and the race is on to find its location and decide if it poses a threat to the continental U.S.”

Not sure what you’ve missed? Just ask our wonderful volunteers for assistance; they love to help you out.

Increase the amount of muscle in your body. For every extra pound of muscle you put on, your body uses around 50 extra calories a day. In a recent study, researchers found that regular weight training boosts basal metabolic rate by about 15 percent. This is because muscle is metabolically active and burns more calories than other body tissue even when you are not moving. Training with weights just three times a week for around 20 minutes is enough to build muscle. Not only will you burn more caloriesyou will look and feel better.

Special Note from the AFC:

Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held Thursday, 1 pm, so stop in and sign up. Classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2.

Architectural Inspection Group

Conveyance Coordinator Lisa Orach 520-917-8072, scoroval@ciramail.com Meet fourth Wed., 2 pm Summer Hiatus

Things have certainly changed in the housing market in the past year. What has not changed much is the value of homes in Sun City Oro Valley. This is due in large part to individuals taking pride in their homes and property. Keeping your home and yards looking good is not easy. It takes commitment and resources. If there is something on the outside of your home you are considering doing, please be sure to check with the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) for any required approvals. Not only will they ensure that the project is done to current standards, but you won’t be surprised when it is time to sell your home and the required inspection is done. The time spent getting approval will be well worth it.

Let’s talk about walls and fences. For privacy and protection our Master Declaration (M.D.) and Development Standards (D.S.) allow walls and fences, subject to ARC approval before installation. There are limits. Walls in front courtyards are limited to a height of 3 feet 6 inches; on the sides or rear the limit is 6 feet. Walls must also use approved masonry or be covered with stucco painted to match the house. Fences have the same height limits as walls and must be selected from approved ornamental iron types painted the approved weathered brown color. There are more details, which you can find in the M.D. and D.S. documents. Start your submittal for any new or changed wall/fence on the suncityorovalley.com website. Contact our Architectural Coordinator, Katy Mosier (520) 917-8058 with any questions.

September begins the return of our seasonal residents as well as cooler air. The Gift Shop welcomes you back. Featured this month are Pat Bloom and Charlene Meyers. Charlene has had a varied career as an entrepreneur. First, a catering business in PA for 17 years, then moving to Hawaii where her photography hobby turned into a business. In 2020, her newest hobby is fused glass, specializing in ruffled vases, pocket wall vases and creating items using plants that she has dried and covered in fine glass before being fired. Pat got hooked on clay when she took a class in sculpture. “I liked the creativity of working with clay and that led to slab and wheel work. It is a never-ending process that you can get lost in for hours. “I like knowing my functional pottery can be put in the microwave, oven and dishwasher safely.”

Mark your calendars for bargains galore at our first Monday Madness sale of the season including jewelry, wood, fused glass, pottery, fabrics, cards and much more. We set up in front of the Gift Shop. This is an easy and convenient way to shop while supporting your resident artists and local charities. We hope to see you.

Summertime Happenings

Monsoon season is almost gone, but…….

The monsoon rains arrived, bringing a wave of weeds. Stay alert for desert broom and spurge and make sure to remove them early. It’s crucial to be proactive about the weeds in your yard. With the summer rains here, trees are growing more. Remember to trim tree branches to at least seven feet above sidewalks to prevent obstruction for pedestrians and maintain visibility for stop signs at intersections. Most bean pods have dropped and should be cleared from your yard.

Is your house number hidden by plants? In case of an emergency, it’s important that your address is easily visible. For safety reasons, please trim any foliage that may be covering your house numbers so they can be seen from the street.

Our committee wants to express a sincere thank you to all the residents who consistently work hard to maintain their yards throughout the year, especially during the hot summer months. Keep up the great work.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf mkropf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

September is the time of year that golf course maintenance shifts its priorities. Instead of trying to grow healthy Bermuda grass on the tees and fairways, the focus changes to slowing down the Bermuda grass in preparation for overseeding. Healthy Bermuda grass provides a great seed bed for the germinating ryegrass seed versus a thin stand of Bermuda grass that exposes the seed to heat and a lack of moisture. However, if the Bermuda grass is still rapidly growing while the ryegrass is trying to establish it will out-compete the new seedlings and cause the ryegrass canopy to thin out.

Bermuda grass growth is slowed down in several ways. Fertilization is stopped on fairways and tees around the first week of August. Mowers are vertically mowing to thin the canopy which slows the rapid growth and density. Growth regulators are applied that limit excess growth as well. The week prior to overseeding another growth regulator is applied that puts the Bermuda grass into a state of dormancy. This allows the mowers to scalp the Bermuda grass down so the ryegrass seed can better enter the canopy and eventually germinate.

This summer the collars around the greens were mowed at rough height instead of fairway height. Golfers were complaining about the balls rolling off the greens especially in the winter when the Bermuda grass goes dormant. Hopefully, the taller grass has helped resolve that problem. With the Bermuda grass still not healthy enough to be overseeded and successfully transitioned back to Bermuda grass, the collars are not going to be overseeded this year.

Be it the beauty of lights at Christmas, music from the grand piano in the auditorium, large-print books in the library, financial support for area food banks, cancer research, wheels for kids, dolls and clothing for victims of domestic abuse, assisting residents with tax returns or domestic issues, equipment and supplies for over 75 clubs and activities, and the list continues. In addition, the habitat of our community is better as a result of sponsorship of Dispose-A-Med and paper shredding days. We can’t forget The Bistro, thanks to a generous estate gift to the Foundation.

During the November fund drive, or anytime, remember to include “seed” in your giving plan for the Foundation.

Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation is independent from SCOV, both financially and operationally.

Clay

Pres., Mary Murck 612-205-0084 mmurck@earthlink.net www.scovclayclub.com

Dirty kiln shelves can be a problem when firing glazed pieces. Loose pieces of fired clay can become airborne, fly around in the kilns then possibly stick to pieces being fired.

How does the Clay Club keep those kiln shelves so clean? Due to the diligent efforts of our members, the shelves are treated with a kiln wash and if needed, are sanded and ground down to remove bits of melted glaze. Applying kiln wash helps our pieces from sticking to the shelf if there are any drips from the glazes.

Sara Harney is pictured applying kiln wash. Other members completing this task are Kevin Harney, Bob Arms and Marti Friday.

Our next general meeting will be Thursday, September 5,1 pm, Activity Center/Kiva. This will be our first meeting since May, so many different topics will be discussed. Please join us.

Coni Arseneau created the

two masks in the picture using a different finish on each one. A piece of cardboard that protected a piece of furniture in shipping was used as the armature. Coni uses a flat- black matte acrylic paint as the foundation prior to applying the finish. The mask on the left was painted with various colors of metallic acrylic paint. The mask on the right was finished with a metallic wax paste, which is generally applied using an amount on the finger rubbing it over the object. Coni used a paintbrush to apply the wax.

The start of a punch needle 16x48 table runner by Coni Arseneau.

The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets Tuesdays, 9-11 am, Sewing Room. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. If you think you might be interested in learning to rug hook, you might ask yourself the following questions. Do you like working with your hands? Do you have the patience to finish a project? Are your hands capable of handling repetitive motions/movements? Can you sit for a couple hours with a project in your lap doing the same motion repeatedly? If you answer yes to these questions, you should give hooking a try. Hooking is easy to learn. Probably the most difficult part for beginners is learning to control the tension and maintaining a consistent height of the loop. Come give it a try.

Instructor JoAnne Bowman shows the “River Plate” to be made.

We offer many classes for all skill levels. All classes are geared toward teaching new techniques for working with glass. We even offer a “Surprise Class” in which the student signs up for a class, not knowing what the project is until they get there. This is always a fun class for everyone. As we think about the holidays and gifts, we have even been offering an ornament class.

Pictured is instructor JoAnne Bowman showing class members an example of a river plate they will be making. Although everyone is given the same instructions, each student will design their piece using their own creativity. Or, they can copy the instructor’s pattern. It is amazing the different designs created. Stop by the studio and sign up for the Beginning Fused Glass class. Hope to see you in the studio soon.

Pres. Claudia Case cjcase@gmail.com

VP Karen Curry 708-822-3057 kindheart77@att.net

Next meeting Thu., Oct 10, 9 am, Location WC3 www.scovwoodworkingclub.com

The time is approaching when seasonal club members will be returning, and the lazy days of summer in the woodshop will become a crowded, busy place again. So while it is relatively quiet, we are recommending that all members re-familiarize themselves with rules and procedures the club has put into place for their safety as well as to ensure the proper care and use of the equipment. Most of that information is at: www.scovwoodworkingclub.com/safety.html and www.scovwoodworkingclub.com/shop-rules-and-procedures.html.

Also, many of the machines have safety and operating instructions specific to the machine posted near the machine, and the www.scovwoodworkingclub.com/equipment.html page leads to more information about individual machines. Our bylaws have been changed, so it is important to check them at www.scovwoodworkingclub.com/bylaws.html. We hope everyone will work safe, smart, and realize full enjoyment of the woodshop and the equipment.

Club Officers (left to right): Laurie, Marcia, Jill, Phyllis & Renee

Conscious aging is about the inner work of reorienting ourselves as we turn from our roles we assumed while managing careers and tending families, to turning inward and cultivating a deeper awareness of who we are now. Our goal is to discover how to face the known and unknown challenges of aging. With the help of our community, we are pondering the questions: Who am I? What are my values? What do I believe? What matters most to me? This inner work is supported by mindful movement such as qigong, guided meditation, and book study, which draws from psychology, sociology, metaphysics, philosophy, and meditation. Conscious aging is about accepting who we are now. Our meetings consist of a short period of easy mindful movement, followed by guided meditation, and discussion. Please contact Phyllis for information, or email the club.

Fourth Sun., 2 pm, Activity Center/Hopi For tours and resources: SCOVstayinginCharge.org

Our club’s residence tours this summer have been a great success. September 11, we conclude with a visit to Campana Del Rio on River Road. Sunday, September 22, 2 pm, Navajo Room, those who went on tours and others who may be considering a senior residence will get together to discuss and review the residences we toured. We discovered many differences between them. Some require buy-ins, some are simply monthly rentals. There are different meal plans, levels of care offered, and staffing variations. When you get to know the differences, you will learn what you prefer. You can plan in advance rather than choose hastily during an emergency, or even have someone else choose for you. Many

residences exist that we did not visit. Should our club plan more tours through the winter? Come help us make a plan.

Pilates

Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 pm, Thu., 1:30 pm, AFC/Studio

Are you a golfer? Are you twisting on drives, squatting and leaning over to pick up balls? Golf movements are required and repeated. The results can be overused, weak muscles and imbalances affecting legs, hips, arms, shoulders, and back. Over 60? Your game is probably affected with shorter, less accurate drives. Stamina decreases, and muscle strains, pulls and tears occur. For years, elite golfers (Tiger Woods, etc.) have turned to Pilates, an essential training tool to stay balanced and improve performance. Like golf shots, Pilates is based on movement from the body’s center or core (trunk, shoulders, abdomen, pelvis). As you strengthen your core, hip rotation improves your range of motion and back stability. Other results? Powerful, more accurate golf shots and a symmetrically muscled, flexible, strong body. Pilates is a full-body exercise with very little joint strain. Call Mary 520-638-7916, or just come by and watch a class

The fall Tai Chi session begins October 10 and runs through December. The course consists of ten classes led by Sensei Donna Drazenovich, 2nd degree black belt in karate, and Assistant Instructor Kyt-Tee Kohout. Each 90-minute class begins with 30 minutes of Qigong followed by 60 minutes of Tai Chi instruction. Instruction for beginners is given separately from those students more experienced. You may observe the first class before committing to the full course.

Tai Chi is a gentle, low impact mind-body exercise. It is both a martial art and meditation and is known for its health benefits. Many medical professionals recommend Tai Chi for improving balance as well as building muscle strength and reducing stress. Please check with your doctor if you have any medical concerns.

Practice sessions are offered year-round to support our club members. For more information, email SCOVTaiChi@ gmail.com or contact Gail.

Birders

Peggy Smith 520-344-0991 pdsaz@aol.com www.scovbirding.wix.com/birdersgroup

The Western Tanager is an occasional summer visitor to SCOV. It is one of three tanager species regularly seen in Arizona. All species of tanagers are striking, but the male Western Tanager (shown) is considered the most beautiful. Southeast Arizona is the southern limit of its breeding range, while the northern limit includes most of the western Canadian Provinces. As is true of all the tanagers, its song can easily be mistaken for an American Robin.

We are a 120 plus member, activity-oriented group. All SCOV residents are invited to join us on our field trips to learn more about the birds in Arizona. We are about to exit our summer hiatus and will restart scheduled trips again next month. If you are interested in knowing more, contact Peggy Smith, 520-344-0991, as well as ask to be added to our mailing list.
