From the Board of Directors
Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.
All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online. Board meetings are open to residents.
Board of Directors - Jane Fairchild
eileenbscov@gmail.comMy Vision for SCOV
During my first year as a board member, I got to see how our Board of Directors operates, along with many of its challenges. As board members, we have to take care of association business. But we also have a responsibility to effectively communicate our work to the community.
As the newly elected President of the Board, I intend to manage board meetings and provide communications that help residents better understand the decisions taken on their behalf.
The establishment of consistent ways to handle the various aspects of conducting board business at our May 1 meeting was a first step. The recent Copper Center vote was a difficult time for our community. Now we can move forward. My intention is to do so prudently and with the long-term interests of the community in mind. Before making decisions, I like to gather information from all sides of the situation. All I ask is that we all make the effort to get accurate information before passing it along.
I look forward to working with our new General Manager, Sandy Seddon, who has all the qualifications and experience we were seeking. She will be a great asset to our community. I hope you will join me in welcoming her to Sun City and supporting our SCOV staff during this transition.
Like you, I was attracted to SCOV by the beauty and friendliness of this community. I am an active participant here as an Ambassador and have participated in many clubs over the years. I enjoy making functional ceramic pieces that I sell in the Gift shop, and especially love our challenging exercise classes.
I’m looking forward to the year ahead. Let’s work together as a community in maintaining the beauty and value of our wonderful home in the desert.

Exciting Times Ahead: Anticipating a New Fiscal Year
As we bid farewell to the successes and accomplishments of the past fiscal year, we eagerly look forward to the promising opportunities that lie ahead. With the dawn of a new fiscal year on the horizon, the Sun City Oro Valley community is poised for a period of growth, revitalization, and positive change.
First and foremost, we are thrilled to welcome two new members to our esteemed Board of Directors, Tod Milton and Jim Cherry. Their dedication, expertise, and fresh perspectives will undoubtedly enrich our community governance and contribute to the continued success of Sun City Oro Valley. Together, we will navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities that come our way, ensuring that our community remains a vibrant and thriving place to call home.
In addition to our new Board members, we eagerly anticipate the arrival of a new General Manager, Sandra Seddon, scheduled to begin her tenure in July. With their leadership and vision, we are confident that Sun City Oro Valley will continue to flourish, fulfilling our mission of enhancing the quality of life for all residents.
Exciting developments are also underway at the recently acquired Copper Center, as plans for renovation take shape. This multifaceted project aims to transform Copper Center into a dynamic hub of activity, offering new amenities and opportunities for community engagement. From enhanced artisan facilities to revitalized gathering spaces, Copper Center promises to become a cherished asset for our community.
Furthermore, we are delighted to announce upcoming enhancements to two of our most beloved amenities. At The Views Restaurant, residents can look forward to the addition of new tables and chairs, providing a fresh and inviting atmosphere for dining and socializing. Meanwhile, the Aquatics and Fitness Center will soon boast new cardio equipment, offering residents cutting-edge tools to support their health and wellness goals.
As we embark on this journey into the new fiscal year, we are filled with optimism, enthusiasm, and a deep sense of gratitude for the unwavering support of our community members. Together, we will continue to build upon the foundation of excellence that defines Sun City Oro Valley, creating a vibrant and inclusive community where residents thrive.
In closing, I extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every member of our community for their ongoing dedication and commitment. Together, let us embrace the opportunities that lie ahead and chart a course for a bright and prosperous future.
It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle!

Behind the Scenes - Tipster Version
I’ve always been intrigued by shows that delve into the intricate process of creating everyday items. Recently, my granddaughter and I tuned in to watch an episode about the production of rainbow sprinkles. Who would have thought that those tiny, colorful confections adorning our ice cream required such meticulous effort and numerous steps? This got me thinking about the intricate process behind the creation of the Tipster, especially now that our staff member who is normally in charge of it is unexpectedly out, and we’re all pitching in to cover her responsibilities.
Did you know that the May issue of the Tipster comprised a whopping 176 articles and 48 pictures? Each image undergoes a rigorous preparation process to ensure it meets the required standards of resolution (dpi), color (CMYK), and format (.tif). Additionally, nearly every image is accompanied by a caption. As for the articles, they are formatted in four distinct ways: heading, leader information, article title, and body text. And let’s not forget the 15 pages of advertisements featuring 71 different advertisers.
The Tipster Editorial Committee meticulously reviews the first draft of all content, including submissions from the board, committees, and clubs. After incorporating their edits, a second draft is typically reviewed by the co-chairs again. This month’s 2nd draft process had to be managed due to unforeseen circumstances, it will soon return to the capable hands of the co-chairs for the July edition.
Once finalized, a pre-flighted .PDF of the document is sent to the printer, where it is produced and delivered to our community. Our dedicated team of collators then ensures that the Tipster is neatly assembled before being distributed by our Facilities Maintenance staff. In addition to the printed version, a digital copy is carefully prepared, with formatting tailored to online platforms. This digital edition is then embedded into a digital flip book platform and made available on our website for everyone to enjoy.
Reflecting on my 23-year journey at SCOV, where I initially took on the responsibility of compiling the Tipster, I’m struck by how much the process has evolved. Gone are the days of typing up articles submitted on paper and the intricate process of incorporating club logos that involved cumbersome camera work. Now, under the guidance of Marsha Dean and the Tipster Editorial Committees, we’ve created a beautiful magazine that serves as a vital resource for our community, informing us about the myriad activities and events in SCOV, as well as serving advertising and marketing purposes. The Tipster truly is a remarkable asset for SCOV.
SCOV Library - Bonnie Holmes www.suncityorovalley.com/amenities-facilities/library Online catalog: https://evolveopac.infovisionsoftware.com/suncityorovalley bholmes@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8083
We are actively working on collection development made possible by the donations of the Friends of the Library, Institute of Learning in Retirement, Sun City Vistoso Foundation, book sales and residents. Summer is a great time to read a new book or watch a new movie. Did you know that we have set up a book series labeling system for those series that are best read in order? Look for the numbered stickers on the spines of some of our community’s favorite authors. This Week In SCOV will announce the date of our upcoming July summer monsoon book sale.
Community Services - Katy Mosier
Architectural Coordinator Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058
Did You Know?
Many people in our community have been selling their homes in the last few years. Part of the process that involves the Association is an inspection of the exterior of your home by the Architectural Inspection Group (AIG). An AIG committee member will look for any deficiencies that are not allowed by our governing documents such landscaping issues, lack of building maintenance and unapproved projects that should have been submitted to the ARC prior to construction. This is a time when residents who have taken a chance and installed new windows, a patio cover, etc. without going through the SCOV Submittal Process are faced with getting ARC approval after-the-fact. With all that goes into selling a home, it is not a time for the additional challenge of getting this Association approval.
Sometimes residents get so excited about a new project that they either forget that most all exterior changes to a property require some sort of Association approval or for some reason they just choose not to take this extra step. Please also be aware that the entire exterior of the property (front, back and side yards) are included in gaining approvals. Part of your project steps must include a review of the Development Standards which are available on our website under Members>Documents or you may pick up a paper copy at the Welcome Center.

Hydrate For Summer
It’s no secret that dehydration is a big issue. When you’re dehydrated, not only does the heat feel even more extreme, but you also run an increased risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Learn how much water you should be drinking and stay hydrated with cold water and other cool liquids like smoothies. Keep in mind that there is a risk of over hydrating (especially for athletes in the heat) and drinking too much water can be deadly. Refuel. Just as it’s important to stay hydrated, it’s crucial to add electrolytes, which are primarily responsible for maintaining a balance of fluid in your body. Those spending a lot of time outside (like hikers) are at risk of drinking too much water, which then throws off sodium levels, so maintain a good balance with electrolytes.
Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held Thursday, 1 so stop in and sign up as classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC.
Phone: 917-8073 or email: ldavis@suncityorovalley.com

Active Health
Chair Rita Menet rita.menet@gmail.com
The Active Health Committee is taking a summer break from monthly presentations for the summer, but we want to encourage you to keep active and healthy. There are many opportunities to keep walking when it is hot outside. Walk with friends in the Auditorium from 6:30-7:30 am. If that is too early, walk indoors in the AFC Mondays and Fridays from 1-2 pm.
If you just like to walk outside, join SCOV Walks Monday through Friday, 7 am from Catalina Vista or Desert Oasis, maps are available. Make a date and bring a friend so you will always have someone to walk with who will motivate you and make it fun. Ask others to join you and have the movement snowball.

Architectural Inspection Group
Conveyance Coordinator Lisa Orach 520-917-8072, scoroval@ciramail.com
Meet fourth Wed., 2 pm
Thinking about selling your home? Don’t forget about the SCOV required inspection.
There are three types of inspections available, you may choose the one that fits your needs. All SCOV inspections look at only the exterior of the home and property for any violations of our governing covenants. To request any of our inspections, please go to SCOV Member webpage, Member Services, Sell Your Home and complete and submit the short form.
The listing inspection is requested by either the realtor or the seller at or near the time of listing and is good for 90 days. Once completed, a report of violations is sent to the realtor/ seller. You may still have time to correct violations before entering escrow. When an offer is accepted, the violations are forwarded to the title company in a mandatory inspection compliance report. Remember that you must have either a listing or escrow inspection completed before the close of escrow. For further details, please contact the Conveyance Coordinator at the Welcome Center.
Architectural Review
Dennis Bell 408-476-8291 ARC@suncityorovalley.com
The Architectural Coordinator (AC) and the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) receive homeowner requests for changes to the exterior of their homes. Depending on the change we follow one of three processes: 1. For painting , Roofing, Driveway Coatings, and Screens – these straightforward changes are handled by the AC, backed up the ARC as needed. 2. Home Additions, Patio Covers: these complex changes involving Architects and Contractors are handled in a two-step process by the ARC to first approve the Concept and then approve the Plan. 3. Everything else like Walls, Fences, Gates, Windows, Lighting, and Landscaping are hadled by the ARC in a one-step process that requires approval of the Plan in one of our twice monthly meetings. In all cases, homeowners just start on the SCOV site members for your home. If you have questions, call Katy Mosier, Architectural Coordinator, (520) 917-8058 or email her at scoroval@ciramail.com. All changes and approvals reference the SCOV standards found on the website members section, documents, development standards.

You can find the SCOV Code of Conduct in The Owner and Resident Handbook page 5. To file a complaint, look in the Members Section of the SCOV website.
Issues not covered by the Code of Conduct complaint process include law enforcement issues, SCOV Facebook posts, ARC issues and any conduct outside the SCOV boundaries.

Summer is Here
As we say goodbye to those who go away during the hot months, it’s important to remember to have someone take care of your home and yard while you’re gone, even if it’s only for a portion of the time. A messy yard can signal that you’re away, potentially putting your home and belongings at risk.
During our monsoon season, assuming we have one this year, weeds tend to grow abundantly and should be promptly removed. In case of storms, there may be instances where homeowners need to be contacted regarding roof tile damage or fallen trees. Don’t forget to provide your summer address and phone number to the Administration, so they can reach you if necessary.
Enjoy your summer knowing your community and home will look just as beautiful when you return as when you left.
Posse
Chair Linda Simōn 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com
No meetings May-October www.scovaz.com/members/committees/posse
As the Posse Chair, I have received calls letting me know that residents have had their cars broken into, as well as have been approached by an unhinged and/or threatening person. Another call indicated a person hiding from them late at night then giving a suspicious response when approached. All the calls happened days later. None of these callers reported the incidents to the police. Fortunately, nothing more happened. I would like to remind our residents and visitors, you need to report any suspicious activity to the Oro Valley Police Department (OVPD) at the time of the incident. They are trained to assess the situation and resolve it with everyone’s safety in mind. We are a safe community and the Posse and OVPD wish to help keep it safe. You too can make a difference. For information on how to join the Posse, call Linda Simōn.

Solar energy is well established in SCOV. The Properties Committee recommended such a system be installed was about 10 years ago. The recommendation was accepted by the Board and our current solar system installed on a leased basis. Further, the study recommended that the Association purchase the system off lease, and that was done November ‘21.
You might be interested as to how this has worked out for SCOV. Very well, as it turns out. In 2023, we saved about $145,000, and if you project the payout, we will break even in August 2026, or less than six years.
There are still opportunities for more solar installations, including Copper Center. The Committee has made these recommendations and await action by the Board because the necessary funding will find much competition from other worthy projects. But sooner or later, we will have more solar power and more savings.

The fairways have been overseeded twice since the year we didn’t overseed. Last summer the fairways transitioned back to Bermuda grass really well, with a few weak spots in the normal areas that needed to fill in. However, the consecutive summers of overseeding will slowly start to impact the health of the Bermuda grass. In May, early indications show a lot of Bermuda grass in the fairways, but June will still have weak areas that need to heal.
The process of transitioning out the ryegrass actually starts in March with a low-rate herbicide application that slows the growth of the ryegrass. The herbicide is very specific to ryegrass and has no impact on the underlying Bermuda grass that is beginning to green up. By slowing down the growth of the ryegrass the Bermuda grass has less competition for sunlight, nutrients, and water to come out of dormancy more efficiently. In June, a different low-rate herbicide is applied that eliminates ryegrass and Poa Annua.
Verticutting is performed in multiple directions to open up the canopy, and deeptine aerifying to relieve compaction which opens areas for the Bermuda grass to spread. Irrigation is closely monitored for moisture levels. Too wet creates a salt buildup that thins Bermuda grass, and too dry causes Bermuda grass to desiccate and die.
Despite all these efforts, the fairways will have thin brown areas following aerification and top dressing in June. This always happens when one grass is being removed to encourage another grass to fill in. By July, the fairways will return to good condition again.

The league leadership, Larry, Mo, and Curly
The Skins season is off and running and, as most league members are enjoying the game. A player can have a lousy day on the links and still win a skin.
The one thing that has been lacking over the past season is a hole-in-one. You guys need to get out there and sink an ace. The Hole-in-One insurance pot is big and, unless someone sinks one this summer, will just get bigger when the season starts in October. Remember, you must have a witness.
If you are just coming into SCOV this summer and you want to meet some great friends who all play your standard amateur game but still love being out on the course, join us for Skins Thursday mornings.
And, as we say for our league, “Half the time, Twice the fun!”

Pres., Mary Murck 612-205-0084 mmurck@earthlink.net www.scovclayclub.com
June evenings are truly made for a stroll through the Artisan Courtyard. Once there, you will notice the beautiful and whimsical totems created by the Glass and Clay Clubs. These totems were installed about seven years ago and draw many visitors to the Courtyard. Recently, Sun City Garden Club worked with Mary Cunningham, Landscape Supervisor, to renew the garden space in the Courtyard. Two new large blue pots have been filled with flowers and accentuate the totems and the central space occupied by the mesquite tree.
Before you leave, be sure to check the windows of all the artisan groups. The Clay Club windows are always inviting, and beautifully arranged. Many pieces are for sale, so if you are interested, please contact the artist selling the piece. They will be happy to hear from you.
And finally, if you have time, just relax on one of the benches. Then, listen to the birds and the peaceful sounds of the evening.

Summer hours may vary, so check the Lapidary door. Our members are always willing to help newcomers and seasoned artists as well. We have everything you need to get started.

Mon., 9 am-5 pm, Catalina Vista/Art Studio
The Sculpture Club meets in Catalina Vista/Art Studio. If you are interested in becoming a member or learning more about our club, stop in on Monday morning or contact Dale Foster. Our sculpture pieces are in the glass case and art room window inside Catalina Vista, a showcase outside of the library and inside the li brary. Stop into the Library and see Dale Foster’s “Funky Chicken” behind the checkout desk. Picture is the second sculpture that Bill Hartigan has completed since he joined the Club. Bill’s sculpture evolved over time, starting with the idea of large leaves for the top of the stump. As you can see, he completely changed the look of the top. Bill used an airbrush to paint his project. He even airbrushed the fine details. Since no one else in the club has used an airbrush for painting, Bill has agreed to give a presentation on this technique.

Cheer Bears is a group of sewing people who care about putting happiness into the lives of children in distress. We donate our bears to groups of first responders, child advocates and anyone who can get our bears into the hands of those who need to be uplifted.
Sewing is not all this group does. We spend time getting to know each other, what is important in each of our lives, where is the best place for a haircut or pedicure, and the best dining places. We have at least a quarterly lunch together. Could you enjoy sharing with a group like that? Then come join us and sit at our table in the sewing room on Wednesdays, 1-3 pm, and share time while creating love. Thank you to the Tennis Club for your generous donation. In our April Tipster article, the picture on the left was featured. The picture on the right is the completed project by Carrie Wiley. This unique project will be given as a baby gift for one of Carrie’s relatives. Hooking projects take time and are not for those who are impatient and/or want quick results. The amount of time it takes to complete a project depends on the size of the desired image and the cut of the wool strips being used. Members are always in awe when someone finishes a project due to the time and effort it takes.

Silversmith and Lapidary
Pres. Rich Rozehnal 520-638-6368 rozehnal@comcast.net
Shop hours: Mon.-Fri. 9 AM-12-Noon
Laurie Volocyk is our featured artist this month. She joined the Silversmith and Lapidary Club in January of this year, and under Ric’s tutelage, cut, shaped and polished her first cabochons. She recently decided to make hearts from a piece of Chrysocalla she had purchased at the Gem Show. After cutting the stones she fine-tuned the shapes on the finishing saw, followed by a lot of polishing. The end result is six hearts, perfect for creating two sets of earrings and pendants. Laurie is one of our many outstanding new members becoming skilled in lost wax casting and lapidary.
SCOV residents interested in joining should visit the shop and speak to the monitor about scheduling training. The training is held monthly on the second Tuesday and Wednesday.

For those who remain, you will be able to enjoy a cool, relatively uncrowded shop for a while. This could be the time to start projects you may have been putting off, and there will be more bench space to accommodate larger projects like furniture and casework. Whatever you do in the shop, work safe, work smart.
Some of our monitors leave for the summer too, so being able to keep the shop open is a challenge sometimes. Remaining monitors , please volunteer for shifts as much as you can. Not a monitor but want to be? Contact Bill Bable, wcbcfp33@gmail.com. Remember, every day in the shop is Monitor Appreciation Day.

Poets Corner
Sharyn Rafieyan 520-825-6762 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 10 am-noon, call for location or invitation to Zoom
There was a time when the Poets Corner hired instructors for six week sessions to hone our writing skills. One of them emphasized revision. Walt Whitman is an excellent example of a well-known poet who kept editing, even after publication. Esther Berlot is another who calls such poems a “redo.”As a group, we all applauded the success of “The Revisionist.”
“My conscience demands originality. I do battle with my id Stare at the wall and shout. Leave me alone I’ve nothing to say
That you haven’t heard the rants, the riffs all my drifts.
In despair, I google gobs of poets, hanging out in the clouds to shoplift and disguise their clever phrases making them mine.
I offer up my stolen gems and await your applause.
Sun City poets are always welcome to join our weekly meetings now on zoom. Just request an invitation.

Milo models good summer chilling behavior
Fido’s Friends said goodbye to many of their winter friends. Dogs are meeting their friends earlier in the morning and later in the day to avoid the heat. For those of us staying here please be sure your four-footed friend is staying cool. Watch for excessive panting, drooling, dry nose, bright red tongue, gums and inside of ears, and stopping or slowing on walks or runs. If you see these symptoms, get your dog to a cooler place as quickly as possible. You can apply a cool (not cold) wet cloth or water to the dog’s belly and offer a drink of cool water.
When the monsoons start, Sonoran Desert toads will come out. Watch your member email for notices about toad aversion training.
Sun City Gleaners
Sally Schuneman info@4sally.com SCOVgleaners.org
December to April, we have donated over 3,000 pounds of oranges, grapefruit, lemons and kumquats to the Impact food bank and local church food banks. We have also distributed that amount(or more) to different locations in Sun City. Later this year we plan to harvest figs and pomegranates.
If you have fruit you would like to have gleaned, and distributed or you would like to help go, to SCOVGleaners.org and sign up. We usually glean on Saturdays but we are flexible. My phone number is in the directory.

You don’t have to be Jewish to join, and we promise a fun time for all. Our new board is hard at work planning exciting programming for the fall, winter, and spring. Keep an eye on our website and the Tipster for details. Wherever you are, have a glorious summer.

Water exercise is especially helpful for arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Some new members have expressed surprise at how quickly the first couple of sessions already increased their abilities to move. Others comment on improved stamina.

Additional benefits include improved balance, muscle tone, stamina and a feeling of well-being. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or just stop by and watch. Words express happiness, sorrow or dismay. Scrabble is a word game that can build a larger vocabulary. Many of our residents had important high-powered careers, but since retiring have let aging slow our pace, and memory is not as good as it once was. Scrabble is used to help stroke or traumatic brain injury patients regain speech and memory ; it also keeps our minds sharp and increases cognitive ability. Members of the Scrabble Club enjoy building their vocabularies and a chance to socialize. Drop by any Friday afternoon and build new relationships. All are welcome.

Every spring the Birding Group looks forward to our field trip to Mt. Lemmon. Of the many species to be found there, perhaps the one of most interest is the red-faced warbler (male shown). Favoring higher elevations and nesting on the ground, it is only found regularly in parts of Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, where it is fairly easy to spot in the springtime. Unlike other birds listed here the past four years, this is only one of two that can’t be found in SCOV.
We are a 120 plus member, activity-oriented group and all SCOV residents are invited to join us on our field trips to learn more about the birds in Arizona. We have now entered our summer hiatus and will not have scheduled trips again until the fall. But, if you are interested in knowing more, ask Peggy (above), as well as to be added to our mailing list.

It’s hot out, but the fun never stops at the pickleball courts. Players of all levels have opportunities to play throughout the day. In fact, there is now plenty of open court time to try out the ball machine or practice your serve, return, and some fancy drop shots. The casual and competitive players were combined for the final Round Robin matches of the season and they are finished for the summer. The schedule can be found on the SCOVPB website. You must be a member of the Pickleball Club to participate in club activities. Registration is on the SCOVPB website. Zero Zero Two.
