Good Luck!
by Eileen Buskirk
Good luck: We all say it, there are times we actually mean it. Many of us, rather than rely on cautions of friends, carry special talismans in our pockets or purses. How did these random objects become recognized as lucky charms?
Should you find an unlikely clover patch in Oro Valley, perhaps you’ll spot a four-leafed clover. The legend of fourleafed clovers began with the ancient Druids. The rarity of these clovers raised them to lucky charm status, able to protect the finders from evil spirits.
Mighty oaks from little acorns grow, and they bring good health according to English legend. In 1899, a shipwreck cost the lives of seven crew members. Of the 11 who survived, one attributed his good fortune to the acorns in his pocket.
An elephant with its trunk raised is a symbol of good fortune, abundance and strength, and is sometimes worn as a good luck charm as jewelry or carried in a pocket. Dumbo flew with his spectacular ears. Jumbo, a circus elephant, became a synonym for “big.” Babar taught us all valuable lessons about kindness, cultural diversity and the value of education.
The lucky horseshoe legend began in Ireland. A blacksmith was visited by the devil, who wanted custom horseshoes. The blacksmith tricked the devil into wearing red-hot shoes, removing them only after he promised never to enter a horseshoe-protected home. With the belief that a horseshoe nailed over the doorway protects the home, some place the opening on the shoe up to collect good luck, while others believe it should be down to shower those who pass under with luck. Carry a small horseshoe for protection and luck.
It's a good time to choose your own good luck charm, for October 13 falls on a Friday. For those who have a phobia about Friday the 13th, that’s called paraskevidekatriaphobia. I’ve heard that if you can pronounce it, it will cure your phobia. But that’s probably just a superstition.

Shared Spaces
Welcome back to another edition of our HOA monthly publication, the Tipster! As we move further into the year, it's wonderful to see our community thriving and growing. One of the key factors that contribute to the success of any community is the sense of unity and connection among its members. This month, I’m focusing on the importance of shared spaces in our neighborhood and how they play a vital role in building a stronger and more connected community.
Shared Spaces: The Heart of Our Community
Our community is more than just a collection of houses and buildings; it's a vibrant tapestry of diverse individuals and couples who have chosen to make this community their home. Shared spaces, whether they be community centers, sports amenities, The Views Restaurant, The Views Golf Course or common areas, serve as the beating heart of our community. These spaces offer opportunities for residents to interact, engage in activities, and foster meaningful relationships. They are the places where memories are created, friendships are formed, and a true sense of belonging is nurtured.
Benefits of Engaging in Shared Spaces
1. Social Interaction: Shared spaces provide a platform for residents to interact with one another on a regular basis. Whether it's a morning exercise class, a book club meeting or a neighborhood party, these activities facilitate social connections that contribute to a tighter-knit community.
2. Collaborative Projects: Many of our community's projects and initiatives are born out of interactions in shared spaces. These spaces are where residents come together to discuss ideas, plan club events and activities, and often work towards common goals.
3. Sense of Belonging: The more time we spend in shared spaces, the stronger our connection to the community becomes. A sense of belonging is essential for overall well-being, and shared spaces provide a tangible way for residents to feel rooted and invested in our community's growth.
As we embrace the spirit of unity and connection, let's continue to prioritize our shared spaces as places of growth, laughter and harmony. By doing so, we can look forward to a community that flourishes with every passing day.
Thank you for being an integral part of our community's journey.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle!
To Oracle and Beyond
by Marsha Dean
Fall is the perfect time to venture out for a day trip. Cooler temperatures make for pleasant outdoor adventures. Today, we're heading northeast of SCOV toward Oracle, Arizona, about 20 miles and a half hour drive. If you plan ahead, you may be able to do more than one activity in a single day, but you will probably want to consider a couple of day trips in order to experience all the great things to see and do.
We'll start with Biosphere 2, which you reach before you get to the town of Oracle. The property is currently owned and operated by The University of Arizona, but was constructed by Space Biospheres Ventures to research and develop selfsustaining space-colonization technology. A 75-minute tour takes you through the history and current research initiatives of the facility. Advance purchase is recommended as they limit the sizes of tour groups. www.biosphere2.org
Just past the town, is Oracle State Park. Once a 4,000-acre ranch, the property has been operated as a state park since 2001. There are trails for hikers and mountain bikes, and some trails permit leashed dogs. Bird watchers will enjoy the variety of birds and visitors will see abundant wildlife. Stargazers may want to visit at night for the darksky viewing. Advance reservations and a separate fee are required for that. www.azstateparks.com/oracle
Who wouldn't enjoy a visit to a lavender farm? Life Under the Oaks Lavender Farm is open to visitors year-round, Thursday-Sunday, 10 am-3 pm. While the lavender bloom isn't until June, the farm has special events all year, such as afternoon teas, dinners and workshops. Visit their website to see what's going on or reserve a picnic basket for a delightful lunch under the oak trees. There's also a boutique where you
can purchase items made from the farm's fragrant lavender. www.lifeundertheoakslavenderfarm.com
Serious hikers may want to plan a trip to Aravaipa Canyon, about 30 miles north of Oracle. The canyon is a designated wilderness area with limited access. Permits purchased through the Bureau of Land Management are required. Access to the trailhead is via a 12-mile road; paved for three miles and dirt for nine miles. There are towering cliffs, flowing water and lots to explore for sturdy hikers. Due to its remote location, there is no cell
service. www.recreation.gov
For those who want to experience the Aravaipa area with a little more creature comforts, there is the Aravaipa Farms Orchard and Inn. It's a working farm with casitas that can be reserved for a minimum two-night stay. The inn hosts special events, and day visits can be booked in advance. Farm produce is available for purchase. A stay at the inn does not include a permit to hike the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness, but there are nearby hikes that do not require a permit and there are also birding and stargazing to enjoy. There is limited wifi and cell service. www.aravaipafarms.com

Safety
Active shooter training provides planning for something we never want to happen, but want to be prepared if it does. Staff underwent this training earlier this year. The Oro Valley Police Department will conduct a training session on what to do during an Active Shooter event. The training will be held on Thursday, October 26, 1 pm, Auditorium. Watch "This Week in SCOV" for a sign up form.
If you are concerned about a friend or neighbor in SCOV, please do not hesitate to contact the police or our offices to have a wellness check conducted. Often neighbors notice that papers and mail are not being picked up, when they know the individual should be home. This prompts them to call the Administration Office, and we’ll contact the police. Oro Valley Police Department will touch base with the resident through the means available to them. Sometimes a resident needs support from family or friends. This is where your Emergency Contact Form on file with our office becomes relevant. Your personal information is protected by the Association. However, when there is a safety need, this information is shared with the police. If you have not updated your Emergency Contact information lately, complete the Emergency Contact Form on the SCOV website at Member Services > Emergency Contact Form. This updated form will be used only in case of a reported emergency such as police matters or water running out of your garage.

Plantings Height Restrictions
Due to monsoon activity, many residents have removed damaged trees and are planting replacement trees. Are you aware that SCOV has an Approved Tree List that must be followed when planting a tree in our community? Development Standards Section 2.18.C.3. states: All trees planted on a resident’s property after November 11, 2021 shall be from the Association Approved Tree List unless otherwise approved by the ARC. No new trees planted after October 27, 2019 may exceed an expected height of over twenty-five feet (25’) at maturity.
In addition to trees, other plantings have height restrictions. Hedges located in the front twenty feet (20’) of the front property line must not exceed 42-inches in height. Hedges on side or rear yard areas may not exceed six feet (6’) in height. When pruning, it is a good idea to cut down a few more inches for the growth that will appear in the coming weeks after pruning. A hedge is defined in our governing documents as a fence or barrier formed by a line of closely spaced plantings and performing a similar function to a screen wall or fence. A hedge can include different types of plantings that grow closely together even though they may not be of the same species.
No shrub which significantly obstructs the sight line from a neighboring property shall exceed six feet in height. The word “shrub” does not include trees. If your neighbor’s shrub is blocking your sight line because it measures in excess of six feet, you may fill out a Resident Complaint so that a homeowner is reminded to prune the height to six feet or less. It is always a good idea to talk with a neighbor before filling out this form found on our website or at the Welcome Center. Many residents are completely unaware how their shrub heights may impact their neighbors’ views.
For more information, please review the Development Standards Section 2.18 and your Tract Declarations which may also be more restrictive.

The Library wishes to express our sincere gratitude to volunteer Trace Getz for the new artwork created specifically for the Library. Our new sculpture is a perfect addition. Author Shelby Tisdale will present her new book, No Place for a Lady, discussing Marjorie Ferguson Lambert. Marjorie loved southwestern archeology, but in the 1930s, excavation sites were not a place for women. Marjorie was a field manager, museum director, curator and professor who married a cowboy and became a dude rancher. When Shelby Tisdale met her, she knew she had to write a biography about this extraordinary woman. Free tickets are available in the Library for her presentation on Friday, October 6. Bob Rosebrough will present his book, A Place of Thin Veil. He will give readers a rare and true insight into Gallup, New Mexico, its ionic stories and its long-kept secrets. Did you know Tony Hillerman included Bob as a character, by his real name, in the novel The Fallen Man? Free tickets will be available in the Library Thursday, October 12, for his Thursday, October 26, presentation. All residents are welcome to attend Library author events. Both events will be held at Catalina Vista this month. See Coming Events on pages 11 and 12 for details about both events.

Balance—What Can I Do?
Proper balance is an important but sometimes overlooked part of your health, especially for older adults. Balance exercises should stretch and strengthen core and lower body muscles. Adding them to your fitness plan has been shown to lower the risk of falls, improve mobility and enhance wellbeing. Some exercises to try: single-leg stance, tree pose, heel-toe raises, heel-to-toe walking, sit-to-stand and side leg raises.
Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC)
Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held Thursdays, 1 pm. Stop in and sign up. Classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns regarding the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2.
Tuesday, October 10, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time.
Wednesday, October 11, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time.
Tuesday, October 24, the AFC spa will be closed for cleaning until 1 pm.

Next meeting Tue., Nov. 7, 3 pm, WC1
This month, the Active Health Committee would like to spotlight the Balance Class, which is a tai chi class for arthritis and fall prevention, developed by Dr. Paul Lam. He is a medical doctor and renowned for his tai chi classes worldwide. This form of tai chi allows for more flexibility and helps not only balance, but also loosens the body’s joints. There is no such thing as perfection with this form. Every person only does what their body allows. Less is more and everyone gains by knowing their limits. The Balance Class is taught Mondays, 10:30-11:30 am, AFC. Classes will begin in November. Watch for the date in "This Week in SCOV." If you have any questions, contact Judy Greenberg gfam5@ yahoo.com.

Architectural Inspection Group
Conveyance Coordinator, Jack Mooney, 520-917-8087, scoroval@ciramail.com
A group of individuals in SCOV quietly do their work without much notice or fanfare. Their work goes on year-round, in the heat of our summers and the cooler days of winter. They are meticulous in detail and know every aspect of our current Development Standards and Master Declaration. They stay current with every change in those documents and other legal requirements pertaining to homes in an
HOA. Without them, homes cannot legally close escrow and transfer ownership.
The group is the Architectural Inspection Group, better known as the AIG. Each year, this group of seven or eight individuals conducts approximately 200 listing and escrow inspections as part of the closing on every home sold in SCOV. After each inspection, they file a report with the Association for processing. They do courtesy inspections when requested by homeowners, as well as over 100 reinspections each year to confirm that violations found initially are being addressed by our new homeowners in our community.
These individuals volunteer their time and talent to ensure that SCOV remains a truly wonderful place to live. They deserve our thanks for the hours and commitment to that goal. Thank you, AIG members, past and present.

Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 pm
The Master Declaration section 4.4, the Unit Tract Declarations and the Development Standards 2.18.C.4 all provide clear direction for managing greenery within one’s yard. Besides weed control, we have a duty to be neighborly and promote safety. For example, within the front yard setback, three feet, six inches (3’6”) is the maximum height of any bush/hedge. This keeps visibility between drivers and walkers within a measure of safety.
For side and backyards, the maximum height is six feet (6’). This height keeps plants under control and mitigates scenery visibility impairments for one’s neighbors. For some, managing neighbor visibility is even more critical. For example, Unit 15 (Cirrus Hill Dr., Tumble Brook, Meteorite Trail, and half of Trade Winds Way) has a maximum three foot (3’) height for shrubbery that is within fifteen feet (15’) of the backyard property line.

The publisher who produced our paper directory for many years will no longer provide the free directories. We are assessing the feasibility of producing it ourselves, because we know that many of you enjoy having the paper version as a handy reference. It's likely that a new version won't be distributed until January, but now is the time to make sure your information is up-to-date by October 31.
Check your listing in the current paper and online directory. You can have different parts of your listing published in one or both: name(s), address, landline, cell phone(s), hometown(s) and former occupation(s). Your email address(es), if provided, are only published in the online directory. Of course, you can also choose not to be listed, but your friends and neighbors will have a harder time inviting you to the next pickleball game or block party. If you want to change your listing, click on the Community Directory section of the Member Services portion of the SCOV website for the online form.

October featured artists are Ken Rosburg and Joan Caine. After 22 years in the U.S. Air Force flying fighter aircraft, and 15 years flying for American Airlines, Ken retired to the Tucson area, settling in SCOV in 2018.
Ken found his second home in our Wood Shop. Using a six-point design, he cuts 12 triangles of exotic and domestic woods and fashions them into stars. The results are incorporated into beautiful tissue box covers, clocks, coasters, wine glass covers and charcuterie boards.
Joan worked in public utilities until retirement. After moving to SCOV, she started in stained glass, then migrated to fused glass projects. Some of her pieces have the same basic theme, such as her Ugly Christmas Sweaters, but most pieces are one-of-a-kind. Her excitement comes from experimenting with different techniques that result in unique works. Her bowls and platters are all food safe but the majority of her work is for display.

Neighborhood Pride
Jack Mooney 520-917-8087 scoroval@ciramail.com
First Wed., noon, WC3
The Neighborhood Pride Committee is undergoing some changes that will ensure consistency and transparency to homeowners. Touring dates and items being reviewed for compliance will be published in "This Week in SCOV" at least two times before Neighborhood Pride begins its tours. As before, a pair of members will go through a section and report their findings of violations. In the past, a second team would tour later to confirm those violations. We will no longer conduct a second tour. Homeowners will receive a Courtesy Notice after the first tour. After the stated time has passed, as listed on the Courtesy Notice, the Covenants Coordinator will reinspect each violation. If the violation has not been corrected, the homeowner will receive a Pre-Fine Violation letter and be given 21 days, as directed by state law, to correct the violation before being issued the first fine. Tours will take place every other month with one conducted in September and the next one scheduled for November. Questions about the new procedures can be directed to the Covenants Coordinator at 520-917-8087.

People helping others enjoy life occurs on a daily basis in SCOV. From sports, to arts and crafts, service organizations and travel, we all help each other, make new friends and enrich our own lives. The Posse helps keep our community safe. We all seem to have time to enjoy the many opportunities SCOV has to offer. Please consider giving six hours of your time a year to help others through the Posse. We need your help. For more information, call Linda Simōn at 520789-7169.
Properties
Chair Jack Evert jackevert439@gmail.com
Next meeting Thu., Sep. 21
You may have noticed, with satisfaction, the shade structures at parking lots around SCOV. Sometimes, friendly competition occurs to be the first one to get the benefit of cooler parking. The shade is a valued amenity, but the primary function of the shade structures is to support SCOV’s very productive solar power installation.
The system provides solar power to some Association facilities. As originally designed, it was projected to deliver just over 700,000 kWh/year, but over the six years it has been operating, it has produced over 775,000 kWh/year and now saves us over $120,000/yr.
The Properties Committee provides information to the Board as they consider adding to the SCOV solar project. The additional arrays would be either directly west of the ten-
nis courts or extend south from the existing Activity Center parking structures. The new power would be utilized by the Aquatic & Fitness Center to dramatically reduce its $50,000 annual electric bill. Stay tuned as the Board considers its options.

Things to Know in October
Pro Shop hours this month:
October 1-8: 8 am-noon
October 9-31: 6 am-5 pm
Course maintenance reminders:
• The golf course will be closed for overseeding until Sunday, October 8.
• The driving range remains open, but please ensure you're hitting on mats only. This measure is in place to give the ryegrass ample time to root properly.
• Avoid hitting off the grass during this closure. It's crucial to allow the overseed to germinate undisturbed for the best results during winter.
• A daily watering schedule will be displayed for your information.
Reopening guidelines:
• Golf play resumes on Monday, October 9.
• From October 9 to Sunday, October 22, the course will be cart path only.
Fall rates (starting October 9):
• Guests playing with a member or resident enjoy the resident guest’s daily rate.
• The guest rate includes the resident rate plus an additional $10 for 18 holes or $5 for 9 holes.
• For members or residents using a club cart in the fall, winter, or spring, there’s a cart fee. The rate is $15 for 18 holes and $10 for 9 holes per person.
For tee-time bookings or any queries, feel free to reach out to the Pro Shop. We're here to assist you.
Upcoming event: Join us for our annual 5k Run/Walk Saturday, October 7, before the golf course reopens. For event details and registration, visit www.TheViewsGolfClub.com.

Golfing experience that provides professional and friendly service, mountain views and excellent conditions.
Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf
scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com
520-917-8063
October is the start of a new season of golf. The golf course has been overseeded so there are different colors of “green” on the fairways and tees. This is a good time to remind golfers about changes from summer to winter play.
The divot mix in the containers will be replaced with a sand and seed mix that is to only be used on fairways and tees that have been overseeded. If that seed mix is placed in turf areas that are not overseeded it will eventually leave large green patches in the otherwise brown turf. This applies to all of the roughs and certain tee boxes that haven’t been overseeded. It is a small step to help reduce extra maintenance required to chemically treat and remove the green spots throughout the rest of the winter months. From a maintenance standpoint, it would be better to do nothing to a divot in non-overseeded turf than put seed mix in it.
When the golf course reopens following overseed, there will be two weeks of cart path restrictions due to the young ryegrass and wet conditions. Last winter, holes number 2 and 9 were staked off with permanent golf cart traffic restrictions for the winter. This was an experiment to see if the underlying Bermuda grass turf could be protected for the following summer. The experiment was a huge success. Those areas suffered very little turf damage in the late spring. As a result, those areas will be restricted again this winter to protect the turf.

Dress for success?
In September, when one of our members showed up in a mismatched outfit, the others rallied around his fashion choices. It may have been a show of support or maybe just a challenge to outdo him, but the group agreed that the following week everyone would do their best to dress their worst. The photo above captures the sartorial disaster. Can you pick a winner?
Join The Views 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club to play golf with your neighbors and have some friendly competition. You may even get some fashion advice.

Play Thu. morning
The new season is upon us. The first league game is Thursday, October 12, and it will be a great day to start with the course freshly overseeded. The first game will be the Lone Ranger, one we all love as our turn comes to be that Lone Ranger.
Mark your calendars for the first Burger Bash and League meeting on Thursday, November 9.
We will be gearing up for the Cure for Cancer event for which the Men’s Nine-Hole League has responsibility this year. It is always a fun tournament, and we are able to raise a nice sum for the University of Arizona Cancer Research Center.
If you are new to SCOV and want to meet a good group of guys and be assured of a golf game on Thursday mornings, come join us, and don’t forget to pay for the Hole-in-One insurance. You never know.
And always remember, “Half the time, twice the fun.”

League play Tue. morning
Several members of our league closed out their summer golf outings September 6 at Sewailo Golf Club. It was a hot day, of course, but lots and lots of fun. An after-golf stop at The Little Mexican Steakhouse was a great way to cool off. The August golf trips included Gold Canyon and Tubac courses.
The photo is of the members who traveled to Gold Canyon. They made a big, long lasting, new friend.
Our winter season for 2023-2024 will begin Tuesday, November 7. Registration for membership will begin Monday, October 9. New members are joining, and we hope there will be even more. If you have questions about our club and are thinking about joining, please contact vice president and membership chair Claudia Svarstad at 303-594-8027.

Sara noted, “I love the creativity of clay. It tells me what to do. I start off with an idea but during the process, my ideas may change and evolve. Clay has a life of its own. And I have so much fun working with other club members.”
Sara decorated her clock with underglaze, a glaze which she became interested in after taking a class taught by fellow potter Deb Jones. She used a Southwest theme and was inspired to create a few whimsical characters for numbers.
Members: Sign-up in the Clay Studio for our fall social on Friday, October 27, 5:30-7:30 pm, Catalina Vista. Next general meeting is Thursday, October 5, 1 pm, Activity Center/ Kiva.

Cooler weather is upon us, and falling leaves and spooky pumpkins come to mind.
Fall is gourd harvest time. After the gourds are harvested, they need to dry before they are ready to be turned into the beautiful creations you see above. The natural color of the dried gourds and multitude of sizes and shapes inspire our artists to design all sorts of creations. Come visit our gourd artists at the Artisan Center. We are always happy to show you around. Even better, consider joining our club. We have everything you need to get started.
Japanese Flower Arranging

May; Oct.-Nov. Second and Fourth Mon., 2-4 pm, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge Japanese flower arranging, ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.
Knit and Crochet
Jane Fairchild 520-909-5069 janemail11@yahoo.com Mon., 2:30-4:30 pm, Activity Center/Hohokam
If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats.
If you wish to donate bags, flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one; no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Do not include newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. ode

Don Holbrook created sets and models for the movie industry during his working career and he is responsible for placing models and displays in the Modeler’s Room showcase window. Don is known for his meticulous painting, texturing and creative techniques, which are on full display in this scene.
“Turn on Netflix and you will find many post-apocalyptic movies. Why not spend the better part of a year making a diorama of a gas station? This presentation started as a Mitsubishi A6M Zero model, lots of car parts, some soldiers, some trash Styrofoam, a bit of paint and texturing, and two scoops of imagination. If I can do it, anybody can.” –Don Holbrook.
Come to our monthly meeting and meet Don and other creative folks.

Our first fall business meeting is Thursday, October 5, 8 am, Catalina Vista. We look forward to a successful year of giving and sharing during the holiday season. We will start planning our holiday Adopt-a-Family and Kuddles for Kids, as well as the Arts and Crafts Sale.
Though Seniors for Kids makes a bunch of toys, they are not only a group of creators. This year, along with our summer donations of food, hygiene items, household goods and
basic needs for the Tri-Community (Oracle, San Manuel, Mammoth) area, we are selling items in the Gift Shop. We will have a sales table at the Arts and Crafts Festival in the Activity Center on November 11, 9 am-3 pm. We have given monetary donations to Tu Nidito to support their volunteer programs of grief counseling. We sponsor the Kuddles for Kids project (watch for more information to come) that unites SCOV in collecting stuffed animals for AVIVA, Three Points, Mammoth and other places where children need a kind hand to hold.
Maybe you would like to join us at our next business meeting and become involved in our happy group. "Living is giving and giving is living."

We welcome members, whether you have been away or summered in SCOV. October is bringing us all kinds of new projects. Thimblelenas are eager to get sewing machines running and needles and hooks in hands, while group discussions unfold. We work with new fabrics and materials as well as recycled resources. Donations have included old bed sheets (not used to cover cactus), T-shirts, yarns, unused fabric as well as money. Thimblelenas support several Southern Arizona charities involving children in crisis, pet beds for shelters or toys at holidays. You do not have to be a sewer as there are many fiber art opportunities. If you are new to SCOV and would like to join, our dues are $5/year. Membership will provide you with orientation to our facility and training on machines. Contact Leslie Monroe for orientation.

Tue., 9-11 am, Artisan Center/Sewing www.scovhookers.weebly.com
The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets on Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. If you are interested, stop by between 9-11 am. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People involved in other arts using fiber are invited and encouraged to join our group.
Rug hooking is a simple craft that is easily learned. It is repetitive, pulling up wool strip loops through a foundation material. If a person hasn’t had experience with needle crafts, they might have difficulty in the beginning with the correct tension. If one pulls too hard on the second or ongoing loops, there is a chance that you will pull out the previous loop. Learning tension comes with practice.

If you would like to learn a new craft this year, join us to see if we can help you find something that interests you. We would be happy to share our projects and help you discover a creative pursuit.

Fall shop hours: Mon.-Thu., 9 am-4 pm, Fri., 9 am-noon
Member meeting Mon., Oct. 2, 2 pm, Artisan Center
Our featured artist of the month is Bill Gibson, a new SCOV resident from Oregon. He came to our club with an interest in silversmithing, but it was obvious that he had considerable experience in stone cutting and polishing. Additionally, he brought to us a talent for knapping obsidian. This involves striking an uncut stone with a blunt tool, chipping it to the desired shape, often an arrowhead. Bill is willing to teach us his ancient skill. Stop by the shop and speak with the monitor about joining our club. You will learn the art of silversmithing, lapidary and knapping. New member training is held monthly on the second Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mary’s “Pueblo Village” began with a single dwelling. That single piece was her original intent. With her ingenuity, one thing led to another, and a single dwelling turned into an entire village. Mary has been working with fused glass for only two years, with no previous experience. Interestingly, her main impetus to move to SCOV was the fact that there was a glass studio. If you’re looking for Mary, she can usually be found in the studio most afternoons. She appreciates the studio camaraderie and the many friendly members who are always willing to be of assistance. Mary also enjoys giving back and is a teacher in some of our regularly scheduled member classes.
When she is not in the studio, Mary loves to swim and do yoga. She also is a member of the SCOV Hiking and Birding Clubs. We look forward to your visit to our glass studio.

The Men’s Bible Study group will resume meeting Tuesday, October 10. This fall it will be our pleasure to study the gospel of John. If you have any interest in a study like this, please check us out. We would be glad to have you join us. We meet every Tuesday, 7:15 am, Catalina Vista, and then for breakfast and fellowship at The Views Restaurant.
Once a month we get together to talk about a book each of us has read. It could be about Venus ice worms, an Irish bodice ripper, a technical manual on Renaissance sword play or a murder mayhem best seller, whatever. We go around the room with laughter and sometimes, the discouragement felt about the latest best seller or maybe the overly explicit ripping of bodices. Come join in the fun. You may hear of a genre you would like to try or snap up a book from our giveaway table. Come celebrate your love of books with us.

As we are very aware, pollinator conservation has become a national priority. Recently, the Desert Museum and the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona (CFBSA) began working together, with the overarching goal of promoting healthy pollinator populations throughout the City of Tucson. This new partnership speaks to the fact that biodiversity and conservation efforts are closely linked to food production. In no case is that connection clearer than when it comes to pollinators. So, please welcome bees and other pollinators into your garden.
Sun City Gleaners

The SCOV Gleaners must have picked a ton or more of oranges and grapefruit last winter. But there were many trees we didn't hear about, where the ripe fruit fell to the ground and was wasted. Do you have a fruit tree in your yard: citrus, pomegranate, fig or maybe a rare kumquat? If you can't eat it all, please text or email Joan Partridge anytime. Even if your fruit is not in season right now, she can arrange for the Gleaners to rescue it when you would like to have it picked. We will make sure to distribute it to others in SCOV and to food pantries. And if you would like to join the Gleaners, it's a lot of fun. Just send Joan an email. We usually glean on Saturdays.

Join us for weekly workshop sessions every Sunday (except winter holiday time) from 3-5 pm, Catalina Vista/Mt. Lemmon Room, starting Sunday, October 22.
Every month we also will have a performers’ showcase where our members can share their acts with the wider SCOV community (Wednesdays: November 15, December 20, January 17, February 14, March 20 and April 17, 4-6 pm, Auditorium).
Whether you want to be a performer or just enjoy the workshop sessions, you are most welcome. This is a safe and supportive space to make your creative journey whatever you dream it to be. Questions? Reach out to Val or Kris.

The Prepare & Share Club members are looking forward to the upcoming season, with the kickoff dinner scheduled for Friday, November 3. If you are interested in joining the club, or just have questions, now is the time to contact a club officer.
Details on the upcoming season will be coming to members in your email inbox soon.

On Monday and Thursday, professional instructors come to SCOV and teach a Joseph Pilates core-strengthening mat class. Pilates workouts are not just sets of simple exercises. Your abdominal muscles, back, hips, arms and more are strengthened and toned. This means you'll have improved posture plus more flexibility, strength and balance. The classes always start out with warm-up stretches, are one hour total body workouts and designed for seniors, so all movements can be modified for different levels of performance. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Stop by and watch one of our classes. For additional information, call Mary.

Cycling renews us. Getting outside in the clean air, taking in the incredible mountain views and biking with friends are some of the reasons we choose to live here. Oro Valley is one of the greatest biking destinations in the country. Wide streets, gorgeous bike paths, clean air and desert beauty draw cyclists from all over the country.
Cycling here is a dream come true for members of the Sun City Vistoso Cycling Club (VCC). With over 250 members and organized group rides four days per week, there’s a ride for everyone.
We support three local charitable organizations: Wheels for Kids, El Grupo and the Interfaith Community Food Bank. VCC volunteers build or repair and deliver over 400 bikes to kids in the Tucson area every year through the Wheels for Kids (WFK) program. WFK’s 40 volunteers have delivered over 4,600 bikes to charities such as Boys and Girls Club, Casa de los Niños and More Than a Bed. New volunteers are welcome.
