From the Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Board of Directors mlabarberascov@gmail.com Staying Mentally, Physically and Socially Alive at SCOV by Mike LaBarbera Recent U.S. census estimates show the median age rose in most states last year, where one in six Americans are 65 or older. As our population ages and the youngest of the baby boomers are retiring, the states need to plan for social services, health and housing challenges for older residents. Advances in medicine, healthier eating, exercise and social interactions play a large part in our quality of life as we age. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that by 2030, the number of older adults is projected to increase by almost 18 million, meaning one in five Americans is projected to be 65 years or over. Charles Schwab Modern Wealth Survey 2023 asked respondents what wealth meant to them, and 40% said well-being. SCOV has many opportunities to help us age in place. Exercise, stretching, meditation, tai chi and yoga classes can help with our balance. Active sports like pickleball, tennis, water volleyball, table tennis, racquetball and POP tennis can help improve agility and reaction times. Indoor card and table games, plus playing musical instruments can improve our mental capabilities. Artisan, bocce, golf, singing and dance clubs all provide opportunities for social interactions. The more a person socializes, the healthier they can become as we build up antibodies that help protect our immune system and boost feelings of well-being. Everyone knows a Debbie Downer or Chicken Little who can negatively affect our health. If we focus on looking for fault in others and our community, it can be depressing, tiresome and stressful. We are at the stage in our lives where we want to enjoy our golden years. Making new friends, improving and maintaining our health, and engaging in the many opportunities in SCOV, we can stay mentally, physically and socially active. An overwhelming number of residents support our Board, Administration, and operations; with the myriad of activities to choose from, SCOV is a treasure trove for a healthy environment and mental happiness.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Safety The Copper Center has a generator that can power the building in times of electrical outage. While a formal plan has not been developed at this early date for usage of the building during emergencies, it can be used any time as a cooling station for SCOV. This use will be incorporated into the Emergency Response Plan that was developed in collaboration with the Town of Oro Valley several years ago. The plan is being reviewed this year. Once the review is complete it will be implemented with staff training and resident communications.

Back by popular demand, the Library will hold its annual Southwest Book Sale. We have hundreds of books on birdwatching, hiking, plants, animals, gardening, cooking and travel. We also have a large selection of fiction titles with a southwest theme, some written and signed by local authors. The sale starts Tuesday, November 7. Hurry in for the best selection. The Library welcomes two authors during the month of November. Robert Ronning will discuss his new book, Wild Call to Boulder Field. The main character, Wade, a disgruntled park ranger whose golden retriever goes missing, in turn creates an ordeal forcing him to look far beyond the typical barriers between man and wildlife. Friday, November 3, 10 am, Catalina Vista. Back in the day, Bisbee was a hub of mining and shipping, a city of immigrants. Now a hub for artists, entrepreneurs and tourists, Virgil Hancock will take you on a visual and historical journey of Bisbee. Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Cardio Cardio workouts help the heart pump blood more efficiently throughout the body. It is also excellent for lung health, which makes them more efficient at delivering oxygen to the blood, muscles and brain. Studies have shown that regular aerobic exercise, such as using a fan bike, can reduce stress, elevate your mood, improve sleep and improve self-esteem. Cardio workouts release chemicals called endorphins, which trigger positive emotion. There’s no better way to build leg muscles than using an Airdyne bike. This bike can impact core-strengthening muscles like your glutes, back muscles and abdominals, as well as leg muscles including calves, quadriceps and hamstrings. Moving the handlebars on an Airdyne bike can build up your triceps, shoulders and biceps while you ride. Building your leg muscles this way is easy on the joints of your feet, knees and ankles without pounding so much on the pavement. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held Thursdays, 1 pm. Stop in and sign up. Classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns regarding the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2. Tuesday, November 14, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, November 15, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Tuesday, November 21, the AFC spa will be closed for cleaning until 1 pm.

Ever wondered what violations are found when a home is being inspected during a listing/escrow inspection? While there are many items Architectural Inspection Group inspectors must look at during the inspection, here are some of the more common violations that they find: • Items added without SCOV approval such as patio covers, gutters, fountains, firepits or fences. • Metal fencing or gates that need repainting. • House needs painting–both partial and whole house. • Damage to stucco, trim or moldings. • Driveway coating in need of repair or recoating. • Paver or concrete work is uneven, cracked or poses a tripping hazard. • Plants overhanging property lines, overgrown bushes near driveways, hedges over six feet tall and plant debris. • And the most common are weeds and bare soil areas without groundcover. If you have any questions about these or other violations, contact the Conveyance Coordinator.

I could make any shape, and create objects in my own imagination.” Her designs are mostly utilitarian such as bowls, plates, mugs, and vases. “I really love angels and birds and draw my own designs and patterns. The angels are representational, more folk Mary Murck art, while the birds are whimsical and fun.” Cindy works in glass and has written a book on self-actualization. Unfortunately, we don't have a photo of Cindy with her art, so stop in the Gift Shop to see her creations.
Government Affairs Chair Earl Vittitoe 309-360-1601 scovga@gmail.com Second Wed., 1 pm, WC1 www.suncityorovalley.com/committees/government-affairs/
On September 28, SCOV residents met with members of the Oro Valley Police Department at The Views Restaurant for Coffee with a Cop. This was an informal event where residents were able to ask questions about public safety and engage with the department. The officers shared information about criminal activity, traffic and public safety. Hyundai and Kia vehicle owners were given steering wheel locks to address the theft vulnerability of those vehicles until the companies implement a fix. Coffee with a Cop is a regular event sponsored by the Government Affairs Committee. A set schedule cannot be established due to officer availability, but will be announced a month in advance. Since space is limited at the restaurant, free tickets will be provided to manage attendance. Don’t miss the Annual Arts & Crafts Festival Saturday, November 11, Activity Center

Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell Third Thu., 3 pm, WC1 (currently not meeting) Loan Room hours: Tue., Thu., 8-9 am www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/loan-room/
Our SCOV Loan Room is a special service available to all residents, something most HOAs do not provide. The Loan Room is staffed by volunteers and financed by donations and the aluminum can collection program. As we begin to get busy this fall, remember to make reservations for the items you need up to two months in advance, either on the website or in person at the Loan Room. We try to keep a sufficient number of medical items for all SCOV needs but the number of tables, chairs, beds and children's items is limited. Come for a tour and see what we have for short-term loans. Also, remember to recycle your aluminum cans in the blue recycling bins around our centers.

The Neighborhood Pride Committee (NPC) will be touring this month starting Sunday, November 5. During this tour, teams will be looking at yard debris, suckers under trees and artifacts. Artifacts are defined as “ornamental objects, showing human workmanship or modification” as defined in section 1.3 of the Development Standards. For further information about artifacts, please see section 2.18.C.15 of the Development Standards. Teams may report any violations that they observe while touring, but will be focusing on these three items in November. As a reminder, homeowners who live on corner lots are responsible for maintaining their side-facing yards. Please be sure to address any items in those yards that need attention.

Properties Chair Jack Evert jackevert439@gmail.com Next meeting Thu., Nov. 16, WC1
Many of you are probably aware of the Lion’s Head fountain located just at the base of the clock tower; however, you may not be aware of the costs for maintenance, water and electricity for pumping. Although a pleasant amenity (who wouldn’t like the sound of burbling water), its location means that most of us don’t get to enjoy it often. Since there are few association functions planned for the patio adjacent to the fountain, it doesn’t get much eye time. Considering all of this, the Properties Committee has decided to conduct a study of the fountain so that a cost/value determination can be made on its future. The options might include: convert it to a garden (the Garden Club has indicated an interest), reduce its size, or complete necessary maintenance and keep as is. The results of this study will be forwarded with recommendations to the Board for a final decision.

The first part of November is when the golf course has dried up from the water used during overseeding. The ground is firm enough to allow the golf carts off the paths and onto the fairways. Cart traffic has been controlled the last few years using a system of blue stakes to direct golf carts on and off the paths. This would be a good time to refresh everyone on the rules associated with the blue stake gates to help minimize confusion. Each hole will have a set of blue stakes at the start of the hole and at the end of the hole. These are gates where golf carts will pass through to both leave and return to the cart path. Once the cart leaves the path through the gate, it will drive straight to the fairway. The cart will remain in the fairway until it reaches the other end of the fairway, where it will leave through the exit gate. However, if driving the rest of the fairway is unnecessary, exit at any time 90 degrees straight to the cart path. Last year #2 and #9 had areas staked for no cart traffic. This test was a big success in preventing severe turf damage normally suffered on those two holes. Since the test was such a success, those areas will again be staked off this winter. Additionally, the end of #4 fairway where it narrows will be staked off from cart traffic for the same reason.

After an especially challenging year, Maria Welch is happily back participating in Clay Club. Maria noted, “I’m really grateful that I’ve been asked to help again with clay orientation. The orientation team tries very hard to help newcomers have a positive clay experience. Even if someone hasn’t touched clay before, there’s always something to focus on and make it that person’s goal.” Maria is pictured with her many colorful and distinctive pumpkins. She enjoys making pumpkins because “they can be used for decor throughout the fall. And also, because they require handbuilding, I can design the pumpkins myself. It’s great fun to create the designs and see it all come together.” Our holiday social is coming up. Mark your calendar for Friday, December 15, 5:30-7:30 pm, Activity Center/ Hohokam and Navajo Rooms. Watch for sign-up sheets in the Clay Studio later this month.
Our seasonal artists will be returning, and soon Friday mornings will be buzzing with creativity. Join us to see colored pencil, ink, or scratchboard art in progress. Maybe this is for you.
Come to the Lapidary Room in the Artisan Center Tuesday afternoon or Thursday morning and see what the bark carvers are doing. If you think you might be interested in taking this up as a hobby, we have people to teach you how and even some tools and bark that you can use. Of course, if you are already a carver, please join us for conversation and perhaps you will be inspired or you can inspire us.

Japanese flower arranging, ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

Sculpture Dale Foster 520-825-0707 fosterdale1248@gmail.com Mon., 9 am-5 pm, Catalina Vista/Art Studio
The Sculpture Club meets on Mondays in Catalina Vista/ Art Studio. If you are interested in becoming a member or learning more about our club, stop in on a Monday morning or contact Dale Foster. Our sculpture pieces are in the glass case and Art Studio window inside Catalina Vista, a showcase outside of the Library and on display inside the Library. The club uses Sculpey Polymer Clay for making sculptures which hardens when placed in a preheated oven at 275 degrees and baked for 15 minutes per quarter inch of thickness. The club has an oven shown in the picture, for members’ use. One consideration when making a sculpture is the size of the piece so that it can fit in the 22” H x 30” W x 17.5” D oven. The picture on the right is a sculpture of “Luna”, a female mountain lion designed and sculpted by Gayle Franklin. Gayle was lucky that Luna fit in the oven which gives you an idea of the sculpture’s size.

The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People involved in other arts using fiber are invited and encouraged to join our group. The picture depicts a project recently completed by Sue Joyce. The picture to the left is her completed project and the picture on the right shows the couch pillow she made with it. To make the pillow, Sue removed the fabric sewn to the rug warp. She then pressed the project using a damp pressing cloth and an iron at the wool setting. The pressing of the hooked item is important because it helps give it a finished patina and even out the loops. Sue then added backing and stuffing material to finish the pillow.

We’re sometimes enlightened, sometimes puzzled, often challenged, but always enjoy the stimulation of a good discussion. Death is a difficult subject for most of us to contemplate, but club member Christa Lubatkin tackles it beautifully without mentioning it at all in a poem that brings to mind Emily Dickinson’s “Because I Could Not Stop For Death,” where she’s riding in a coach. Christa’s “In alien land” offers her own unique spin with a loved one sharing the cart: Yes I can sit in the cart with you, rattling down this patch of rock-strewn road. Hold the lamp high, dim the wick, soften the light. Trapped together on this stretch of alien land.

We are really looking forward to the beginning of the season for the Prepare & Share Club. The kick-off dinner will take place Friday, November 3, Catalina Vista. Members and potential members have recently received the application to participate this year, and will need to return it prior to that date. Members of Prepare & Share enjoy getting to know some of their SCOV neighbors and friends who enjoy cooking and eating interesting food. Themed dinners take place monthly in members’ homes. Since everyone brings part of the meal, it is not a huge effort for the hosts. Themes for the four months will be announced at the November event, with the first meal being held in December. If you have questions, or are interested in joining, please contact Debbie Kotlarek at the number shown above.

POP Tennis is a game of strategy, ball control and consistency if executed well. More importantly, it’s fun. Played on a 60 ft. by 27 ft. court, it utilizes tennis scoring with a softer tennis ball and paddles a bit This game may be beneficial to your health and wellness shorter than tennis rackets. The smaller court results in less stress on the knees, while the underhand serve is much easier on the shoulders. We have players in their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. The one thing they all have in common is that they get good physical exercise while enjoying the laughter and camaraderie of the club. If you would like to check us out, stop over at the Desert Oasis any Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday morning at 8:30 am. If you like what you see, we’ll let you get out on the courts to hit a few balls. Caution: Once you try it, you may be hooked.
