Association News From The Board of Directors

Our MISSION as the SCVCAI Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Vistoso as an active adult community. SCVCAI Board of Directors Newsletter A bimonthly newsletter by Director Janice Strassburg about the activities and items discussed by the BOD is available on ListServ. To sign up, go to www.suncityvistoso.com, hold your mouse over News and Info, click on In the Know, put in your email address and click on Submit button. Select any of the notifications you would like to receive and click on the Submit button. For those who do not have access to a computer, a copy is available for reading in the Library. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCV Library. Board meetings are open to residents. An Important Community Ingredient: Comity by Fred Bjorling, Board Vice President This is a little story, already heard by some. My wife Judy and I explored several Sun Cities and visited this one several times before moving here in 2002. We chose SCV because of the great friendliness and good humor of the residents we met, the severe beauty of the mountains and desert, the community amenities, and the great number of activity clubs. However, when we bought here we became aware of the nastiness of the debate that had recently taken place over the purchase of the building now known as Vistoso Center. The incivility of the manner in which objections were expressed made us wonder if we’d made a serious mistake. Today, looking at that building and its many uses makes one question what would have happened if the purchase and renovation had not taken place. This would be a much less desirable community. Eventually something would have had to be built at greater cost to meet the growing needs. Yet some residents were not only unable to foresee that need but fought ferociously to prevent even discussion of what eventually turned out to be a reasonable and economic solution. This is a democratic community. We have the right to disagree, to have our say, and our vote, but it’s important to do so civilly if we are to respect each other, to have the respect of outsiders and to have the greatest chance of coming up with the best solutions. Good citizens do not try to prevent the appropriate expressions of others. However, it is necessary to have and to follow good procedures for orderly discussions to take place. No one ever said democracy is the easiest form of government. For it to work well requires a knowledgeable, self-disciplined and scrupulous citizenry. Let’s keep working on ours, OK? Oh, one last thing: Judy and I don’t think we made a mistake moving here. We love this place and its people. Its great qualities far outweigh its small imperfections. Bob Mariani, General Manager

Health and Wellness for YOU by Bob Mariani

As you know, life expectancy is constantly increasing. Although living longer is generally considered desirable, most of you will agree that it’s much more desirable to live not only a long life but also a quality, balanced life spiritually, physically and mentally. SCV (Sun City Vistoso) is an excellent community in which to live if you desire a life filled with quality through an array of activities and educational programs that promote health and wellness. Fortunately, a large number of our residents are involved in and benefiting from all that is offered here, but is that enough? Although it is fantastic that so much is offered at SCV, I am confident we can do much better. A large number of our residents do not take part in the programs that are available for many reasons, including the fact that health and wellness for our residents has not been promoted and encouraged to a sufficient level. We also have opportunities that have not been pursued to develop additional activities and programs that will engage more residents. The fact is no one is too old, frail, out of shape mentally or physically to initiate activities that will improve the quality of his/her life. Getting in shape mentally, spiritually and/or physically does not mean that one needs to train for a marathon or study subjects of interest for several hours each day. It may simply mean engaging in minimal daily activities of one’s choice to develop muscle tone and flexibility that is sufficient enough to allow an individual to as comfortably as possible perform daily activities. A much greater number of our residents may become engaged in health, nutrition and wellness activities if encouraged to do so. This is where you who are interested in healthy activities and/or have a background in some aspect of health and wellness can help. If you have an interest in assisting in the promotion of health and wellness programs, I urge you to contact me so that a group or committee can be formed to work with our staff in an effort to develop programs and encourage all residents to improve their quality of life.

Heroes Among Us Nominations Sought

The Board of Directors is requesting residents to submit candidates for the Heroes Among Us award. This award is designed to honor residents who make remarkable contributions to our community. Nominations should be submitted by Friday, January 13, by filling out a hard copy of the form available in the Administration Office or by completing the form sent out via email on Monday, January 2. The Board will review the nominees and select the recipient(s). The award will be presented at the Sun City Vistoso Annual Meeting in March.

Association Committees Committee meetings are open and all residents are welcome to attend. ARC Architectural Review Chair Susan Jakosa 609-6367, susanjakosa@gmail.com Second and fourth Tuesdays, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

One of the ARC’s main responsibilities is to meet bimonthly to review home owner submittals. We make sure that those submittals are in compliance with the most recent Development Standards and with the Sun City Vistoso Declaration of CC&Rs (Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions). These documents are a must to examine if you are planning exterior changes to your home. You can obtain the latest version of the documents from the Sun City Vistoso website, www.suncity-vistoso.com. After you get to the main page, first hold your mouse over Association and then scroll to Governing Documents. At this point, you can double click on whichever document you are interested in reading. If you do not have computer access, the Community Service Coordinator, Jim Cundiff, has printed copies available. ARC will meet only once in December, on Tuesday, December 13. We will resume regular meetings in January. Communication Committee Leslie Platt 520-818-1963

SCV residents are known to have a wide range of opinions on almost any subject. A recent article in USA Weekend suggests four steps for resolving differences: 1 Listen carefully, shutting down that voice in your head that argues with everything the other person is saying, and try to understand where he is coming from; 2 Repeat back what you understood and make sure he is satisfied that you did; 3 Calmly state your own position and ask for feedback Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

4

to ensure you were understood; 4 Seek common ground. The Communications Committee tries to replicate this process for the Association by: 1 Providing factual information about the decisions of the Board in Tipster inserts; 2 Seeking feedback through surveys and focus groups; 3 Providing the information received to the Board, other Association committees or, in the case of the proposed Aquatics & Fitness Center project, the ar chitectural firm selected to prepare preliminary drawings. Using this process, we can identify com mon ground and facilitate solutions more satisfying to all. Community Assistance Committee Chair George Holthus 818-1042; Susie Klein 825-7535

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Vistoso. Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. In October we delivered 479 pounds of aluminum cans which netted the CAC $316. Fiscal year-to-date we have received a total of $1,256. The Loan Room activity is picking up and many of our residents are returning. Please make a reservation for items you need over the holidays for visitors or parties. Reservations can be made by telephone on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8-9 AM or at the Loan Room on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. Telephone numbers are listed on the inside cover of the Tipster. We recently purchased new booster car seats since many of ours had expired dates and it is important to keep these current. CAC has agreed to help finance a hearing-assistance system recommended by the Property Committee and is considering a request to fund a cable feed to Catalina Vista. See Coming Events for information for the yearly Pancake Breakfast.

Conservation and Energy Committee Co-Chairs Beverly Browne 825-2921 and Ed Kennedy 825-3659 First and Third Tuesdays, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

Whether it’s your whole holiday list or just some last minute items, we have something for everyone. Check out the Artists of the Month who have items displayed in the center front window. The artists for December are Julie Holtry and Jinnie Wilson. Some of Jinnie’s angels have a new look this year, and she also has a lot of the old faithfuls available. Jinnie dresses them for all occasions. If you’re looking for a great gift for the woman in your life, check out Julie’s gorgeous jewelry. She handcrafts stunning pendants, pins and earrings which would look on a New Year’s Eve outfit. Check out the Gift Shop before you drive all over town for those on your gift list and don’t forget to treat yourself. Government Affairs Chair Hal Linton 825-2812, haling@comcast.net Second Wednesday, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

After a stand-down in August and September, the GAC (Government Affairs Committee) resumed its regular meetings in October and November. As has been the case recently, getting participation by more of our residents remains a top priority. The GAC works closely with officials of the Town of Oro Valley on a broad set of ideas and projects. They also explore county, state and federal governmental plans and operations which it believes would be of interest to the SCV community. Residents are warmly welcomed to join us and help us identify topics to consider for research, discussion or review (e.g. Arizona Corporation Commission, Social Security, Oro Valley Town Budget, and Oracle Road Expansion Project). The following presentations are confirmed: 1. The Oro Valley Water System Challenges – Philip Saletta, Water Utility Director, Tuesday, December 6, Sun City Vistoso Tipster, December 2011

Social Hall/Navajo. 2. Town Hall Meeting – Steve Solomon, Council member on Friday, December 16, Social Hall/Navajo . Landscape Bob Cratty 825-0157 Third Wednesday, 9 AM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

The Mountain Vista area is the focus of our initiative to refresh our landscape in 2011-2012. This is part of an 11-year plan funded by the Asset Reserve. Our top priority for this heavily-used, image-creating area is to enhance its aesthetic appeal, adding importantly to our community’s overall appearance. We have reviewed the preliminary design, which is 30% complete. While most of the trees and many of the shrubs will remain, we are enthusiastic about the proposed changes. For example, plants will be added to the entry ways, punching up the appearance and giving our community a distinguishing look. The Lion’s Head Fountain area, with its existing strong structural design, will see some new plants that will showcase different colors, textures and forms. These will replace the current plants which have outgrown their space and require frequent shearing in order to look good. Marketing and Publicity Tut Tustison 825-9431 Fourth Thursday of the month, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

CourseTrends - Golf Marketing Marketing the golf course is, and has been, a high priority of our Association. Because our marketing dollars are limited, our marketing staff and the Marketing Committee have had to be creative to achieve the best results. One of our recent efforts to maximize our effectiveness is a partnership with CourseTrends, a company dedicated to the marketing of golf courses. CourseTrends assists in the design and management of our website and helps us show up on the first page of search engines like Google. They provide a place on the website that is exclusively for our golf pass holders. An Account Manager is assigned to us, and has weekly meetings with our marketing staff to discuss strategies and review past efforts. Our long-term objective is to build extensive email lists so marketing can be expanded with little or no extra expense. CourseTrends has developed a 52-week email program to generate return business and helps us collect information so that we may target our marketing to specific groups (such as an event for women only or a special one for military veterans). They have numerous developed and tested email programs to share with us. As an example, through CourseTrends, we are now able to sell golf gift cards online. The program also offers the ability to track how an ad is doing. Each month there is a complete report on the effectiveness of our marketing and custom tracking of our advertising. There is much more available through their programs, and we are learning more each week. All of these services provided us by CourseTrends are compensated by trading them one tee time each day. We are excited about this program and what it will do for The Views Golf Club!

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache

‘Tis The Season We wish you a most happy holiday season! Our community looks absolutely beautiful and we should indeed feel proud of the way it looks; not only to neighbors and ourselves but also to those individuals who visit with the thought in mind to buy and move here. We sincerely thank you for helping to make Sun City Vistoso such a wonderful place to live. With the holiday season upon us, enjoy your families, friends, neighbors and especially our beautiful community. Neighborhood Pride hopes you have a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year.

Posse Chair Del Balston 825-9681, Vice-Chair John Njaa 825-5486 Meetings: First Tuesday, 3 PM, Social Hall/Hopi http://www.suncity-vistoso.com/committees/posse/

We are approaching the time of year for giftgiving and celebration. Don’t give thieves a reason to celebrate by giving them the gift of easy access to your vehicle and home. Make the holidays difficult for them by locking your vehicle and by keeping gifts and other valuables out of sight. Do your holiday visitors a favor by urging them to do the same. Keep garage doors down and doors locked. We know that SCV is one of the most crime-free neighborhoods anywhere. By not giving thieves a gift, we help the OVPD (Oro Valley Police Department) and Posse keep it that way. See the Posse website for more crime prevention information. Service Anniversaries

We would like to wish you and yours a wonderful and joyous holiday season. We look forward to serving you in the year to come. Robin Coulter, Assistant Manager Cost Savings

At a recent manager’s meeting our General Manager challenged us to have our staff look for cost savings or revenue generating opportunities. Since then we have had several good suggestions submitted. Of those submitted one is being implemented, and others are in the research and review process. The cost savings measure that is being implemented was submitted by Jim Cundiff, Community Services Coordinator, which moved the processing of escrow notifications to a service company saving the Association around $6,000 a year. Another measure being explored is how our Tipster advertisers are provided with a copy of their advertisement. In the past the entire magazine was mailed to them which involved using a larger, more expensive envelope and the postage associated with the larger envelope and magazine. This is being changed to sending just the sheet with the ad (called a tear sheet) which is a common practice in the advertising industry. This small change in process will save over a $1,000 a year in supplies and postage. These types of cost saving methods have been going on as a regular practice by staff, but with the new process the general manager has put into place, we are better able to track the savings.

Pam Sarpalius, Programs/Facilities Director Happy Holidays to all

It’s that time of the year to remember friends and family. Some of you will send holiday cards and some will send gifts. Guests and family will arrive to visit you from colder climates. Parties will be held to bring in the New Year as you make those resolutions that you say you will keep each year. During this busy time, I hope you will not forget those in need. There will be collection boxes for food drives and socks for veterans for those who won’t have the joy that you will have during this season. Sometimes we forget to look outside our community and be thankful for all we have and enjoy. I urge you thank your mail person, wave to the garbage man, and just say thank you to all the people who provide a service to you all year. I want to wish you all the best as we end the year and look ahead to 2012.

Recreation and Fitness, Lonnie Davis Easy Tips on How to Survive the Holiday Food Frenzy

1. Focus on talking more to party guests and eating less. 2. Avoid hanging around the buffet table at social gatherings. 3. Stick to high protein foods, fruit and veggies.Go for the turkey, the sliced meats, the fresh fruit and raw veggies without the dip. 4. Avoid high-fat hors d’oeuvres such as cheese, nuts, saucy tidbits and fried anything. Instead, nibble on the veggies or chew gum and talk a lot. 5. Eat before you go to a holiday gathering. Have a small meal such as fruit and lowfat cottage cheese, yogurt, a bowl of consommé with melba toast or a low-cal protein shake, a handful of grapes or an apple. 6. Make yourself the designated driver at least half of the time. This will help you avoid calorie-laden alcoholic beverages. 7. Instead of wine or mixed drinks, try soda water with lime and towards the end of the event reward your self for your good behavior with a glass of wine or your favorite drink. 8. Bring your favorite low-fat recipe to a holiday event or dinner. Then eat a lot of it. Taste-tempting treats, but limit yourself to one small bite. 9. Continue your workout schedule, but ease off a bit to allow for the extra time holiday commitments take. You don’t want to stress yourself out or quit exercising completely. Association-Sponsored Fitness: Purchase a punch card from the receptionist in the Administration Office, $12.50/10 classes. You may use this card for all Sun City Vistoso-sponsored fitness classes. This year’s Open House for Christmas will be Thursday, December 15. The sale will run from 5-7 PM. The Pro Shop will offer huge savings just in time for Christmas and the Café will have some delicious appetizers, punch and the bar will be open as well. Spin the wheel again this year to reveal your big discount. This is a lot of fun and a chance for everyone to wish Happy Holidays to their golfing buddies. Pro Shop hours: Christmas Eve day we will close at 1 PM and we will be closed Christmas. Happy Holidays! Just a reminder, if you have not renewed your annual pass and you still have a range key from last season. Return your key to the Pro Shop. It is no longer valid. Thank you for your cooperation. The golf course just finished a bunker renovation and has been re-rated by the AGA. The new slope and ratings were adjusted slightly for the men; however the women’s slope and ratings were not affected. The handicap computer has been updated with these new numbers and the new scorecards will also reflect this change. In December we will be changing our walking signs once again. Walkers will need to be off the golf course no later than 7:45 AM. Michael Kropf, Superintendent

Fairways on number two and thirteen that weren’t overseeded this year require different maintenance practices than the holes that were overseeded. These two holes were sprayed with pre-emergent herbicides to prevent weeds and grasses from growing during the winter months. However, when a golfer takes a divot, the chemicals are removed and that exposed area of turf is susceptible to weeds. From the golfer standpoint the first option is to replace the divot if at all possible. The only other option is just to leave the damaged area alone because filling with the divot/ seed mix that the golfers have will lead to both fairways having green spots all over. The maintenance department will fill these divots weekly with straight sand to eliminate the depressions. Another difference on these two fairways is that the golfers aren’t going to be allowed to drive on the fairways with their golf carts. The overseeded rye grass provides protection for the underlying dormant Bermuda grass on all the other fairways, but number two and thirteen don’t have this protection. The golf carts will start to wear out the Bermuda grass in the high traffic areas and cause damage going into next summer. The solution to this problem is keeping the golf carts in the roughs only. The restriction isn’t for the golf carts to stay on the paths, but they will be allowed in the roughs so walking will be minimal. This should allow the grass to stay healthy and also maintain a good pace of play.

Golf Advisory Payton Davies Chair 825-5352 First Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache

Something to mention to golfers. With the bunker renovation, a decision was to turn the fairway bunkers on holes 14 and 15 into maintained waste areas. This means that you can ground your golf club, and remove rocks and debris. Rakes are still provided, so as a courtesy to the next player, please tidy up the area as you leave the waste area. We are looking for a non-golfing member of the community to serve on the Golf Advisory Committee. It is helpful to have a non-golfer give input to the committee so that we can see the golf course from his/her perspective. If you are interested, please let us know. Men’s 18-Hole Golf Club Pres. Bob Farmer 818-1522 Membership Dick Boss 638-6644 Play: Wednesdays

The cooler winter months are here and the Men’s 18-Hole Golf Club is in full swing. Dick Boss, and February 1. The Ray Bruns, Mert Townsend and Ron Lude. Views Cup qualification continues with weekly league play and tournament play. Your points for qualifying are posted on the Men’s 18-Hole bulletin board. The 2012 18-Hole Men’s Club renewal forms are available in the Pro Shop. All renewals are due Thursday, December 15. Renewals not received by that date will be considered late and the player will be placed on inactive status. A $10 late fee will be assessed after Thursday, December 15. Please post all of your scores in the Pro Shop and turn in your score cards signed with your first and last name with date played. The more scores turned in, the more accurate your handicap. Thanks go out to Mike Kropf and all of the golf course maintenance crew for the great shape our course is in. “Golf is good for the soul. You get so mad at yourself you forget to hate your enemies.”

Resident’s Homemade Food Website Is Tasty! www.finedinings.com

Items included in this section must be open to all residents and either be an Association-sponsored or an annual club event of interest to the entire community.

by Marge Roetzel, Tipster Editor, Photo by Dave Johnson

Everyone is interested in food that is not only good for you but pleasing to the eye. Peggy Bucholtz now has this interest even though her children told her, “When we were growing up, you were a terrible cook.” Her wish to change her persona grew from a desire to please herself and her family, as they had all acquired fine culinary skills. Peggy has a deep love for French and Northern Italian cuisine and concentrates on these. She creates her own easy, simple and quick recipes for all dishes, her secret is the use of the best quality fresh ingredients. She enjoys a large herb garden in her SCV patio. She concentrates on gourmet multi-course meals for home cooks, where everything is elegantly garnished and plated before serving. In 2001 her son-in-law suggested she start her own food website. She proceeded to make rough draft designs of how it should look and then hired a person with web design skills who transferred her ideas to a website program. Then it was necessary to go to a Host Website Service. This is the only way to gain access to the worldwide web. She calls her site www.finedinings.com Peggy is also very knowledgeable about wines and includes suggested wine choices to accompany her menus as well as recipes and instructions for all food preparation. She wanted a unique and interesting visual website rather than just written text. In so doing Peggy became the author, editor, webmaster, chef, stylist and photographer. All of these were self-taught. She studied food magazine photos to gain insight on how to set up the shots and installed a Photoshop program on her computer which allows her to use her own photos. The finished website is truly outstanding. Peggy renews www.finedinings.com every two weeks: it is also available on Facebook. Please take a look. It will certainly whet your appetite and provide many interesting and delicious offerings for your next party or family dinner.

The Holidays are here, and HomeAgain.com has some great reminders for protecting your pet: 1. Practice Fire Safety: candles can get knocked over by wagging tails, so don’t leave pets and candles unattended. 2. Be Careful about giving your pets people food, and don’t let your guests do it either. 3. Protect both pets and breakables by keeping fragile glassware, decorations, etc out of reach. 4. Plants toxic to pets include mistletoe, poinsettia, holly and lilies. 5. Keep alcoholic beverages out of Fido’s reach. 6. Chocolate is everywhere during the holidays, but it is toxic to pets. 7. Twinkling lights are an attractive hazard for dogs and cats, keep them out of reach. 8. Don’t decorate with food; strings of cranberries and popcorn tempt dogs to ingest string. 9. Avoid tinsel. If a pet eats it, intestinal problems are common. 10. Small toys, ribbons and bells present choking hazards for dogs.

Garden Club Pres. Vicki Gushwa 825-2413 Meeting second Wednesday, 1:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pima

Here we are back to winter already. If you attended our November meeting, you know how to protect your plants from freezing this year. If you just returned from your summer away, you missed a fun day at Tohono Chul Park, Plan to help deck the halls of the Social Hall with us on Monday, November 28, 9 AM. After we decorate, a catered lunch will be served to thank those who worked so hard to make the Social Hall beautiful. On Wednesday, December 14, 1:30 PM , we’ll have a holiday pot luck social featuring tastes of each others traditional holiday foods. We’ll also learn some table decorating tips from Arlene Kuizema. Gardening Tip: Winter days were made to give us a break from yard work. Do protect any plants you still have that are cold sensitive. One handy tip, use those old fashioned incandescent Christmas lights to keep your trees warm. Just wrap a string of the lights around the tree. The heat from the incandescent bulbs acts as a heater.

Seniors for Kids Jean Sax 818-2410 First Thursday, 8 AM, Desert Oasis/Aztec, September - May,

We’ve distributed the toys for this Christmas 2011, so will be starting work for next year. We always need additional woodworkers and sewers who like to make children happy. We make quilts, stuffed toys, wooden toys, almost anything that could comfort a kid and make him or her feel loved. We also refurbish bikes and computers. Maybe you have a new idea or skill that we could use. Come to one of our meetings, find out how this happens and make connections with other altruistic SCV people. The work to actually make children’s toys happens at various times, either in a group setting or at home. We welcome your help.

Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762 Mondays, 9:30-11:30 AM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

“The real writer,” says Marge Piercy, “is one who really writes. Talent is an invention like phlogiston after the fact of fire. Work is its own cure. You have to like it better than being loved.” Most texts on writing stress the importance of putting something on paper (or capturing your thoughts via the latest technological gadget) as a means of making progress. Our Monday morning meetings provide an impetus to follow that practice weekly, if not daily, and we continue to see the positive results of our passion for poetry. Newcomers are welcome to join this encouraging group whose critiques generally aim to be gentle. We are an excellent sounding board and happily applaud successful efforts.

The Yoga classes will take a break during the holidays. The last classes for 2011 will be Monday, December 12, Tuesday, December 13, and Thursday, December 15. The classes will resume in 2012 on Monday, January 9, Tuesday, January 10, and Thursday, January 12.
