Do The Best For All by Dick Brammell As a resident of Sun City Vistoso, I look at the good things that have been done in the past few years to maintain and improve the community for all of its residents. Those projects don’t happen by accident but because a resident, a committee member, a staff person or a board member has brought forth an idea. As a result, the idea manifests itself into a study committee or an ad hoc committee, and sometimes the idea doesn’t develop traction because it may lack merit. In any case, some of those ideas are developed and brought forth to the board for consideration. I have been on the board for just a short time and have some experience with the previous board. I have learned that all board members want to do what is best for the entire community and not just for those ideas that they champion. If we only cared about those ideas that we want, I don’t believe some of the ideas would have become projects in the community. As a board member, I believe you need to think about everyone, not just yourself. I am sure that future board members will try to do what is best for all. I am looking forward to the rest of my term working with current and future board members.

What Happened this Summer? by Bob Mariani
It’s a good time to review what transpired over the summer. One major project was the re-construction of the golf course bunkers. Overall, the bunker construction went well, but was challenged by the delivery of the wrong sand, mortar sand rather than bunker sand. This error caused some delay and additional work but in the end all was well and the finished product is better than what we expected. Along with this golf project, the tee-time reservation system and website were changed, I anticipate the golfers will find it easier and more pleasant to use. Additionally, new tee box markers are in the process of being installed. They were all paid for by sponsorship donations from resident golfers. When you visit Catalina Vista, you’ll notice new paint and flooring that gives the facility a fresh, updated look. The kitchen has new cabinets, counter top and paint. The outside of Catalina Vista also received several new plants to replace those that froze last winter, plus the parking lot was sealed and striped. The Desert Oasis parking lot has been resurfaced. The parking surface had deteriorated and was more than ready for this fully-funded and properly scheduled asset reserve project. There was no slowdown in the administration office. Aside from the day-to-day work plus the typical cleanup, catch-up and organization, one major project may have gone unnoticed by the membership. This project is the scanning of the 2488 lot files which will result in a paperless lot filing system, saving storage space, staff time and copy costs. Last but not least is the progress that was made on the Aquatic and Fitness Center Project. The Board assigned a sub-committee of the Properties Committee to conduct a search for an architect to design the project. After weekly meetings over a few months and a final presentation by three firms, the firm of Burns Wald-Hopkins Shambach (BWS) was selected. BWS will develop a schematic plan, renderings and a budget that is scheduled to be completed in December. The architectural firm will also participate in presenting the plans to the membership in January and February. Detailed information regarding the AFC project is available on the Association’s website at www.suncityvistoso.com. I encourage you to visit the website for constant updates on this project and a wide array of information.

Association Committees Committee meetings are open and all residents are welcome to attend. ARC Architectural Review Chair Susan Jakosa 609-6367, susanjakosa@gmail.com Second and fourth Tuesdays, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui
Are You Making an ARC Submittal? ARC meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesdays. Submittal deadline is Thursday noon prior to the meeting. When you get your submittal form at the Vistoso Center, you will receive a lot drawing and guidelines for form preparation. Please use the drawing provided and refer to the Development Standards and the CC&Rs regarding requirements pertaining to your request. A common problem with owner submittal forms is lack of a complete description of the proposed work. If needed, attach a separate sheet and fully describe the proposed work. Determine if an Oro Valley building permit is required. If so, attach it or state that it will be obtained prior to start of work. Your attendance at the ARC meeting when your submittal is reviewed is very helpful to answer any committee questions. Jim Cundiff will be happy to answer any questions regarding submittal requirements. Communication Committee Leslie Platt 520-818-1963
Last month we discussed the surveys and focus groups that the Communications Committee has conducted in order to gather information for the architects who are developing the preliminary design and cost estimate for the proposed Aquatics & Fitness Center (AFC). Responses were narrative and do not lend themselves to statistical analysis, but we wanted to share recurring themes with residents. Good Ideas for the AFC: 267 responses. 228 positive (provided ideas), 28 negative (do nothing), and 12 (cosmetic changes only). Most desired improvements: more space; more pleasing surroundings, cleanliness, air quality, better lighting, higher ceilings, better floorSun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

ing; addition of TVs/music; maximizing views/windows; more and better equipment. Ideas on Fitness and Wellness: 128 narrative responses quantifying participation and space requirements for exercise and dance groups, as well as telling us how residents define “fitness and wellness” - so that architects might have a better understanding of how residents would like to use the facility. Opportunities, Concerns and Challenges: 69 responses, 37 expressed support and concern for real estate values if the project is not done, 24 expressed opposition, citing cost concerns or satisfaction with the existing facility and six felt changes should be cosmetic. Challenges included passing the project, possible cost overruns, and finding ways to finance it. An additional survey and two focus groups are planned as we go to press. Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Vistoso. Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. In September we delivered 399 pounds of aluminum cans which netted the CAC $279.30. Fiscal year to date we have received a total of $939.96. CAC, which operates the Loan Room, offers equipment to help with medical procedures, visits from family, and get-togethers with neighbors and friends. Reserve the articles up to two months in advance for those holiday visits and planned surgeries. The Loan Room is located at the end of the Cart Barn and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. Our telephone reservation system begins in November and will be available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 8-9 AM. We have a new number (917-8052) in addition to the old number (825-3711 ex. 128). We are also available at other times for medical emergencies only and can be reached through the office. Please visit us to see what we have available or go to the website for a partial list.

Tucson Electric Suspends Rooftop Solar Approvals Due to a huge surge in applications for leased residential solar PV systems, TEP exhausted its 2011 budget for “up front incentives” or rebates in early September, and has stopped taking new applications for all PV systems. If you have a contract for a system and have not received an approval notice from TEP, you should contact your lessor/installer and find out the status of your application. If your system is delayed in the queue for a 2012 rebate, it will have a different rebate than you contracted for, which may result in a different price. Remember a solar PV system changes the exterior appearance of a residence, and therefore must be approved by the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). Some installers may tell you this step doesn’t matter, but the AZ Solar Rights Law does give a homeowners association the right to establish “reasonable rules for placement and installation,” and homeowners who bypass the ARC can November 2011, Sun City Vistoso Tipster

Sincerely We do not say thank you to the people around us often enough. Perhaps, as homeowners, we should say an occasional thank you to our neighbor who borders our personal property. If, when he has his own yard cleaned up by a landscaper, he includes part of yours which may have a problem caused by his foliage, it just might deserve a thank you. With Thanksgiving nearing, there is no better time to say thanks to the homeowners who keep their properties in compliance with the governing documents. Neighborhood Pride has been a viable and hardworking volunteer committee for six years this month, and the hard work and countless hours from our members have helped to make Sun City Vistoso a beautiful place. Walking or driving through our community, one can’t help but feel pride in living here and enjoying life as it’s meant to be. We sincerely thank you and wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

One cannot watch the news without hearing a report on the job market. As the market has declined over the past few years, our job climate here at SCV has remained constant. Homeowner’s Associations are stable employers as a standard. SCV management plans its staff throughout the budget process and receives approval through the Finance-Budget Committee and Board. Management has consistently stayed within those set parameters during the year when positions become vacant. Currently employed are 54 full-time and 41 part-time individuals. As a staff member, I am very grateful to be employed by SCVCAI. Also, the many employees with longevity are a testament to the good working environment and the support employees receive from the Association. We wish to thank the Board and Association for their continued efforts on behalf of its staff. Pam Sarpalius, Programs/Facilities Director
Should we stop printing the Tipster and take down bulletin boards? Now that I have your attention, I would like to remind you how to find information about Association events and entertainment. In the past we put individual event flyers in the Tipster along with an article in the “Coming Events” section of the Tipster. This seemed costly, and it supplied you with double information. The October Tipster had a flyer with events listed for the next three months. I will continue this process of doing a quarterly flyer of events. I feel this provides you with basic information but it also reminds you to read the Tipster and check the bulletin boards in the event of any changes or new information. A great deal of time and effort is put forth every month to publish the Tipster. Remember to keep your Tipster all month so that you can refer to it for not just Association news, but club events and other information. September Housing Resale Information Resales

Now that overseeding is complete and the course has been marked, we are ready for another great season. Just a reminder that the driving range is open to the public. Range balls are $4 for a small basket (approximately 30 balls) and $6 for a large basket (approximately 60 balls). Lessons are available from me or Rick Sample. We are both PGA members; our rates are $45 for half-hour and $55 for 45 minutes. We also offer packages, so please call us for more information. Please stop by the Pro Shop and check out our new merchandise. A new product that we purchased is called Tin Cup and is a very unique way to mark your golf balls. We also have a sale table and sale rack with some of last year’s products at a reduced rate. Walkers, please abide by the walking signs that are provided for you. We want you to enjoy the beautiful scenery and at the same time be careful that you do not get hit by a golf ball. Finally, the Pro Shop will be closed on Thanksgiving at 1 PM. Happy Turkey day to all. Michael Kropf, Superintendent
The weather forecasters are predicting another La Niña winter for the desert southwest. This means the weather will be very similar to last winter with colder and drier conditions. This is a concern for golf courses because those conditions resulted in very poor transitions this last summer. The underlying Bermuda grass seemed to have a difficult time protecting itself during the extremely cold weather combined with the competition of the overseeded rye grass. The golf course had a very difficult time recovering from last winter’s cold weather, but due to the bunker renovation project the rye grass wasn’t eliminated as quickly as possible during the earlier part of the summer. In order to repair the inevitable bare areas next summer, the rye grass is going to be sprayed out quickly in middle to late May. If the weather forecasters are correct, the course will really need to be exposed as early as possible so the recovery process can begin. Last winter the course was not watered as heavily to provide firm playing conditions. Areas of greens and fairways that were constantly dry showed the largest November 2011, Sun City Vistoso Tipster

amounts of damage to the Bermuda grass from higher concentrations of salts due to the reclaimed water. This winter the dry areas will be monitored very closely. Wetting agents will be used more frequently to encourage water absorption, solid tine aerification will be increased to promote water infiltration, and hand watering to control how much water is being applied. The goal is to maintain good playing conditions and prevent further summer damage. Golf Advisory Payton Davies Chair 825-5352 First Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache
Over the summer there were changes made to enhance your golfing experience. The bunkers have been rebuilt including reshaping, liners, drainage and new sand. Be patient. It will take time for the bunkers to firm up. You will notice that the hazards have been remarked and redefined to make them consistent around the course. Check with the pro shop staff with any questions about the rules and your playing options. You will soon see new tee marker signs with the new The Views Golf Course name and updated hole descriptions. As we start the new season, make sure that we all maintain the course properly. It is our responsibility to assist anyone not taking care of our course. Repair your ball marks and fill your divots (only in the fairway with sand/seed mix). Do not fill your divots in the rough. Remember to rake the new bunkers properly; the group behind you also wants a good lie. Men’s 18-Hole Golf Club Pres. Bob Farmer 818-1522 Membership Dick Boss 638-6644 Play: Wednesdays

Vistoso Tipster History by Marge Roetzel, Tipster Editor
Chris Richard, Editor of the Vistoso Tipster, was asked by the Genealogy Club to research the historical records of the Tipster. What she discovered is very interesting and worthy of sharing with the readers. Del Webb broke ground in 1987 for SCV. The first resident-produced newsletter was published in July 1988. As the staff was planning the publication someone said, “I think it should give tips to the residents on what is going on here,” hence the name Vistoso Tipster. It was 11” x 17” single sheet, folded, black and white, printed in-house and delivered to the residents. Also in 1988, Del Webb introduced a four-color, six page, two-fold, newsletter called Vistoso Views. It was on glossy stock and did not please the residents as they complained it was too hard to read! The cover listed homes sold and number of residents. The December edition listed 440 homes sold and 770 residents. The name is rather ironic as we have just gone through a search to create a new name for our golf course, The Views Golf Club. By 1989 the Vistoso Tipster format began to resemble what we have today and was being professionally printed outside, still black and white with no advertising. The December cover showed homes sold as 598 and listed the population as 1,024. The Vistoso Tipster has continued to evolve to the professional-looking monthly publication we now enjoy, which runs from 36 pages in the summer to 48 pages in the winter. However, it remains true to the 1988 concept, to provide tips to the residents and has kept up with changing styles. It is printed on quality magazine stock and four color throughout. The best thing is that the publication is totally funded from the sale of advertising to pay for printing.

Watercolor painters ask, “How can I use photos with my creative expressions?” Mel Stabin, who has written The Figure In Watercolor, gives some insight: “When we cannot paint people from life, you have three viable options; sketches, photographs, and memory. Although my preference is to use my sketches and memory for source materials, I do work from photographs, which can be useful when you want to capture the details of fleeting moments.” All are invited to join club members for painting. Arthritis Water Club President Dawn Simske 825-0907, Secretary Ruth Hofstetter 825-8990 Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 1:30 PM, Aquatic & Fitness Center (formerly the Sports Complex) pool.

Great Books Pres. Syrile Ellison 818-6521 October-April, First and third Wednesdays, 2 PM, Catalina Vista/Tohono
“Sin”, said Benjamin Franklin, “is not hurtful because it is forbidden, but it is forbidden because it is hurtful.” Perhaps he should have added: but only in the extreme. As we reviewed the sin of pride, we discovered that its possession can be both positive and negative. This month we may determine that envy is always corrosive as we explore the second deadly sin. November 2, Esther Goldman will lead our discussion of Roman Fever by Edith Wharton. November 16, Michelle Brislance will guide our examination of Smokers by Tobias Wolff. In December we may come to a better understanding of Anger as we take a close look at Rudyard Kipling’s Mary Postgate. If sin is not sufficient enticement, we also serve delectable refreshments. Please join us. The Seven Deadly Sins Sampler, containing all of this year’s great stories, is available from The Great Books Foundation, 1-800222-5870 or Amazon.com. The Gun Club is for people who have an interest in learning about guns, shooting, personal protection and firearm safety. In fact, you do not even need to own a gun or have any experience with firearms to come to meetings. We especially invite women, who are interested in learning about firearms safety and self-protection with or without a gun, to attend. People are frequently interested in learning the laws and regulations about carrying a gun and what is required to obtain an Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit. Club members are encouraged to bring any new or interesting guns/accessories to the meeting for people to see or any guns they want to sell/trade. For safety, any gun brought to the meeting needs to be unloaded and have a trigger lock or plastic strip lock. At some meetings we have guest speakers from law enforcement or other gun related organizations. You are invited to come to a meeting and see if our club activities would interest you. Club members often shoot on Thursday afternoons (Oct.-May) and Thursday mornings (JuneSept.) at Pima Pistol Range. Hand and Foot Bonnie Arneson 229-1084 Sundays, 1:30 PM, Desert Oasis

At our November 21 meeting, open to everyone, we will show: 1) Rome, the Eternal City, and 2) Pompeii, a Perfect Snapshot of a Roman City, presented personally by Gordon McCall, a local Oro Valley resident. Rome is known as the “eternal city” because of its nearly 2,000 year history and its importance as the hub and capitol of the Roman Empire. In this program we will do a guided walk of Rome’s classic and most important sites, followed by an in-depth exploration of the Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica and Vatican Museum. The Pompeii program will launch the 4-part program “A Passage to the Amazon”, Rome to Manaus, Brazil. We begin this 3-continent, 6,000 mile journey in Pompeii, Italy, a Roman city suddenly smothered by Mt. Vesuvius ash and pumice in the first century AD and preserved and lost for nearly 1,700 years. You will walk the streets and marvel at this excavated perfect snapshot of the Roman Empire’s architecture, art, society, and culture. Subsequent parts, including Sicily, Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, and the Amazon, will be presented in the December, January and February meetings. Writers Club Adrian Korpel 818-0544 First Wednesday, Noon-2 PM, Catalina Vista/Pima
The Writers Club is the umbrella organization of writers and poets. Writers of all kinds (memoirs, essays, short stories, screen plays, novels, etc.) get together for reading and discussing their work the first Wednesday of each month. This is a relatively small group, making for friendly and leisurely brown-bag lunch meetings around noon. For more information, contact Adrian Korpel. Poets’ Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762 Mondays, 9:30-11:30 AM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui
Carl Sandburg describes poetry as “the synthesis of hyacinths and biscuits”. A good poem, according to Robert Graves, is “one that makes complete sense; and says all it has to say memorably and economically, and has been written for no other than poetic reasons.” To achieve Sandburg’s synthesis using Graves’ measures of a good poem would surely be a worthy goal for any poet. Perhaps we can only hope for progress or improvement as we meet to critique our work, but we are a welcoming group that offers encouragement along with suggestions, nor are we sparing with praise. Yoga Pres. Jewel Prendeville 520-395-1356 Mondays, 8:30-10 AM, Social Hall/Papago Tuesdays, 10:30 AM-Noon, Vistoso Center/Apache Thursdays, 7-8:15 PM, Social Hall/Dance Studio
