Why I Changed My Position on the Aquatic & Fitness Center Proposal by Robert Hefner Last February while campaigning for the Board of Directors, I said that I was in favor of renovating and improving the equipment in our cardio-vascular and strength facility. I believed, as I still do, that the space allocated for those facilities is adequate for the foreseeable future. Thus I stated that I was opposed to a major expansion of that building. I now whole heartily support the Fitness Center proposal. So what has changed to cause me to reverse my position on this proposed project? Nearly all of the added space in the proposed renovation will be devoted to new facilities that are sorely needed by our community. There will be at least one and probably two new multi-purpose rooms that can be used by our many exercise groups that currently struggle to schedule time for their activities in our other buildings. There may be a new wellness center and/or space for a massage facility as well as space for other new activiSun City Vistoso Tipster, October 2011

ties. The space allocated to the current exercise facility will not be significantly enlarged, but will be more efficient and much more esthetically appealing. I am now convinced that the proposed renovation of the fitness center is not only a desirable addition to our community, but one that is well worth your support. Bob Mariani, General Manager

Energy and Cost Savings by Bob Mariani

Recently the opening time of the Desert Oasis swimming pool was changed during the winter months (November through March) to 10 AM. The majority of Sun City Vistoso residents are probably not interested in this change, but the story of how this came about and the savings that will result should be an interest to all of you. This change of pool hours started months ago when the Properties Committee and Administration began looking into the operation of the solar and gas pool heaters at the Desert Oasis. Without going into considerable detail, it was found that the solar heater was not working and several repairs had to be made to get it operational. Most of those repairs or modifications have been undertaken at this point. During the time that the solar heater repairs were underway, the Committee and management considered the fact that if the pool was not heavily used during the early morning hours, it may be a good idea to keep the pool closed and the pool cover on until later in the morning. In order to determine if this might be feasible a survey of attendance was conducted during the winter for several weeks. The survey revealed that very few residents used the pool prior to 10 AM. Very few means that during the course of time that the survey was conducted between zero and two residents used the pool prior to 10 AM on any morning. Once the survey results were discussed at the Properties Committee meeting, the Committee and Administration agreed that it made financial sense to keep the pool closed until 10 AM. This change of hours actually saves in two ways. First, the gas pool heater does not have to use nearly as much gas and produces nearly as much heat with the pool cover on through the evening and up until 10 AM. Second, when the cover is taken off and the air is warmer, the solar heater is much more efficient, thereby further reducing the amount of energy used by the gas heater which will further reduce the cost to heat the pool. Thanks primarily to the Properties Committee for thinking a little outside the box, there will be another cost savings that will help keep dues at a competitive level. The only thing that is required to make this change successful is the residents who use the Desert Oasis pool adapting to the later winter pool opening hours and the change in children’s hours from an 11 AM start to a noon start.

Association Committees Committee meetings are open and all residents are welcome to attend. ARC Architectural Review Chair Susan Jakosa 609-6367, susanjakosa@gmail.com Second and fourth Tuesdays, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui SCV Well Maintained, Words to Live By

One document you received when purchasing in SCV was the Homeowner’s Handbook which includes a section titled Community Standards, Architectural Review Compliance. Concisely, it states that landscaping must be neat and well maintained, house exteriors, walls, fences etc. must be kept in good repair. Driveways, sidewalks, coated or not, windows, screens, can all be included, among other things, in this statement. The section continues explaining that ANY change/s that MIGHT alter the exterior appearance of the house or property must be submitted to the ARC for approval. For example, replacing a window/s requires ARC approval. There are situations that our Community Services Coordinator, Jim Cundiff, may approve. Does your driveway need to be re-coated after a few decades of use? This is one of the many items that Jim can approve. Please, call me or Jim if in any doubt about how to stay in compliance with SCV standards. Communication Committee Leslie Platt 520-818-1963

August was very busy as the Communications Committee continued its efforts to keep residents fully informed and involved in development of plans for the proposed Aquatics & Fitness Center. We conducted surveys and focus groups (two of each) on three topics: Your Good Ideas for the Aquatics & Fitness Center; Your Ideas on Fitness and Wellness Classes; and Opportunities, Concerns and Challenges. Survey and focus group questions were identical, and surveys were available in hard copy and online to give both full-time residents and seasonal residents the opportunity to participate. All responses were provided to the Aquatics & Fitness Center Subcommittee to assist them in developing a project that includes input from as many residents as possible. Assuming a continuing high level of interest, both surveys and focus groups will be repeated throughout the fall, with additional topics added if appropriate. We will also focus on publicizing the vision of the architect selected to develop preliminary plans. Our next meeting is Monday, October 3, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache. If you just returned, you will notice when you walk your yards that trees, grasses, weeds, and shrubs really grew. Don’t forget to remove weeds in cracks of your driveway, sidewalk, and where the cement meets the blacktop of the street. Plants protruding over sidewalks need trimming so as not to injure passing walkers. Trees at corners need trimming so stop signs may be seen. Suckers under trees should also be cut off down to the ground. Pre-emergence applied to your yard will stop the germination of seeds and you won’t have as many weeds next year. Check with your landscaper or pest control professional. Take a close look from the street – can you see the numbers on your house, day and night? For safety sake, trim back any plant, or change light bulbs, if your house number is not clearly visible. This is important should an emergency vehicle need to find you.

Consider Volunteering

When discussing the Posse with long-time Sun City Vistoso residents, some will say they volunteered when they were new residents, but they don’t any longer. It’s as if Posse service is considered a rite of passage for new residents and once they have Dexter Jones receiving her 20-Year “served their time” they are Award from Chairman Del Balston. off the hook. While we actively solicit new residents to volunteer, we also urge former Posse volunteers to consider volunteering again, even if it’s for an occasional patrol. This would significantly improve our ability to staff patrols on all shifts, especially during summer months. So, if you are a new or long-time resident, please call Del Balston 825-5486 for information about volunteering, or visit the News Page of our website (http://tinyurl.com/scv-posse). Robin Coulter, Assistant Manager Live Streaming

The architect presentations for the AFC (Aquatic & Fitness Center) have been completed. When we began discussing how best to share these presentations with those not able to attend the meetings the idea of live streaming was brought up. Staff has been networking at the Oro Valley Business Club and has made contact with a company involved in social media which includes a live streaming element. They made some suggestions to staff which led us to the company USTREAM.com. We were able to establish a video and audio live streaming connection over our WIFI service in the social hall for these meetings. Additionally, our meetings are saved online at USTREAM and available 24/7 from any location via an Internet connection. If you wish to see the architect’s presentations you may go to ustream.com and search for our channel SCVCAST. From there you may select from the three video presentations. For your convenience there will be a link on the AFC web page to ustream.com. This is accessed by going to our website, clicking on the Association tab and selecting the Fitness Center page. The video link is after the Board Initiatives. There is also a copy of the presentation available in the library. We are pleased to bring you this new service. Pam Sarpalius, Programs/Facilities Director Guests

We always welcome guests staying at your homes, or your guests visiting you for the day. Guest usage of some facilities is a privilege. Keep in mind, since holiday visitors will soon be here, that there are simple procedures set forth for all guests. Resident members in good standing must sign in guests each time a guest uses a facility. A guest must purchase a visitor pass at the administration office, in the event that the actual resident member can’t come to a facility each time the guest visits it. I suggest you read over your current “Homeowner’ Handbook and Rules and Regulations”. Your yearly dues maintain our facilities and we ask that there be no misuse of guest privileges. One of the reasons we have monitors in facilities is to report misuse and insure the fact that resident membership is held in high regard and not misused by nonresidents. This is your community and you pay dues to enjoy it. It is the Association’s duty to protect your interest and investment. August Housing Resale Information Resales

Recreation and Fitness, Lonnie Davis Old Sneakers May Be Ready for Replacement

If it’s been two years since you replaced your exercise shoes consider these points: The first thing that goes with old (but comfy) shoes is shock absorption, which helps protect your feet and joints as you exercise, says Stephen M. Pribut, chairman of the AAPSM’s shoe evaluation committee. Diminished absorption can put extra pressure on bones, leading to soreness and possibly a stress fracture. To prevent injury, stick to this shoe-replacement schedule: Buy new running shoes every 350 to 500 miles (don’t forget to add the mileage you put on shoes if you wear them to do things such as walking the dog); purchase new walking shoes every 6 to 9 months if you walk up to 4 miles a day; replace aerobic shoes every 6 to 9 months if you do 3 hours of aerobics each week. Association-Sponsored Fitness: Purchase a punch card from the receptionist in the Administration Office, $12.50/10 classes. You may use this card for all Sun City Vistoso-sponsored fitness classes. It can also be used for your guests. There is a $2 drop-in charge if you do not have a punch card. Cardio Chair Aerobics: Tuesday, Thursday, 10:3011:30 AM, Catalina Vista. Sunrisers: Low-impact aerobics class: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 7:15-8:15 AM, Auditorium. Sweat Stretch: Tuesday, Thursday, 7:30-9 AM, Auditorium. Water Aerobics: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9-10 AM, Aquatic & Fitness Center (formerly the Sports Complex) Pool. Zumba: Thursday, 5:15 PM, Auditorium. Golf Kim Griggs, Head Golf Professional

We hope everyone had a great summer and are ready for another fun season at The Views Golf Club. The staff is certainly ready for another busy year and we are eager to serve our pass holders and residents to the very best of our ability. The GolfNow program continues to be a success as does inviting outside groups to experience our spectacular golf course. These groups will be booked around our pass holder times as much as possible. Please remember that pass holders do have a 7 day advanced booking option. The golf course is currently closed for overseeding and will remain so through Thursday, October 13. We will re-open on Friday, October 14, but will be cart path only through Friday, October 28. Pro Shop Closed Saturday through Sunday, October 1-9 Pro Shop Open Monday through Thursday, October 10-13, 9 AM-1 PM

Our schedule will be as follows when we re-open. Tee Time days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) will begin at 7:30 AM, Monday’s shotgun will begin at 11:30 AM, Thursday’s shotguns will be 8 AM and 11 AM, and Saturday’s crossover times will be 7:30 AM and 11:45 PM. For those of you who choose to walk and/or ride the course during the closed period or anytime in October, please remember that all traffic, pedestrian or vehicular, must remain on the cart paths only. This is to protect our immature grass. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. When we open for play, please ensure that you abide by the walking signs that are posted for your convenience. If you are an evening rider or walker, keep in mind that you cannot enter the golf course until 5 PM, and even then, you will be sharing the facility with golfers. So please be cautious and courteous. Michael Kropf, Superintendent

October is when the golf course gets a fresh new look with the overseeding process. All the problems associated with the previous summer transition are hidden under a coat of winter rye grass seed and compost. However, those problems are only hidden from view until next summer when they reappear. This process has been going on for many years and the only way to stop it from happening is to make some hard changes. The first changes were made last year with a reduction in seed rate, less aggressive overseeding preparation to reduce damaging the Bermuda grass, and skipping overseeding on certain holes. The next change that is going to occur in May where the rye grass will be chemically removed quickly. This will not only allow the Bermuda grass to grow without competition, but will also expose those hidden problems on the greens and fairways from the previous summer. By exposing these areas they can be fixed during the early summer with sod

on the greens and sprigs on the fairways. This will allow these new grassed areas to establish a good root system over the course of the entire summer, and improve the chances of surviving the following overseeding. However, the course will look very bad in late May due to the dead rye grass and thin Bermuda grass. Golfers need to be aware that this is a necessary process to greatly improve the overall health of the golf course for the long run. By the fourth of July the course should really start looking great again. Golf Advisory Payton Davies Chair 825-5352 First Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache

The bunker project is coming to a close. As with any project there have been lessons learned. One of the lessons is that we should do a better job of communicating the status of the project with our golfers. We are working to improve our communications through the Tipster articles, Divots, postings on the golfer’s bulletin board and ListServ email. Golfers need to make the effort to know what’s going on by keeping up with this information and attending Golf Advisory and club meetings. I believe we will see better communication in the coming season. Speaking of communication, effective October 1 the way that tee times are made on the website will change. The new method is more closely tied to the Pro Shop’s point-of-sales system. There will be flyers in the Pro Shop explaining the change and an informational meeting about the new system will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache (followed by the Golf Advisory Meeting at 2 PM). At this meeting we will discuss the new website, the new pass-holders-only section and how golf pass holders can make their tee times and the new options available with the tee time software. Feature Sun City Vistoso Is Busy All Year

by Shirely Peterson, Tipster Editor Although activities pick up in October, things are happening in Sun City Vistoso all year long. It may surprise some to realize that SCV is a busy place, even in summer. For instance the General Manager and those in the Administration offices are hard at work. The Café and the Pro Shop are open and doing business. Every building has a monitor, even in summer. Then, there are the golf course people who do some of their construction projects when the course is less busy

but really hot, and the common area maintenance workers who are keeping Sun City Vistoso tidy under a blazing sun, even in summer. There are clubs that meet. There are posse members keeping watch over SCV by night, even in summer. Even in summer, there are volunteers who staff the Gift Shop, the Library and Consumer Referral. There are volunteers working in the Loan Barn from the Community Assistance Committee. There are volunteer Tipster staff and Ambassadors, and golfers and pickle ball, tennis, billiards and bocce players who continue through summer.

October usually means fall weather with leaves turning colors and cool, crisp air. Well, not so here in our desert. It means the commencement of a new season of club activities. It also inspires our fine artists anew to congregate in our studio, create new art pieces and recount summer activities. To all our residents who have any artistic interest and are not currently part of our group, we invite you to join us on Wednesdays in our well appointed art studio at Catalina Vista. A very happy, healthy and creative art season to all. Oil Painting - Art Made Easy Merle Broadbent 818-0098 Mondays, Wednesdays, 9 AM-Noon, Catalina Vista/Art

Are you ready to start painting again? The first session starts Monday, October 24 or Wednesday, October 26. Call Merle to reserve your seat. See you there!

Sculpture Gene Eckebrecht 825-2419 Mondays, 9 AM, Catalina Vista/Art

Although many of our artists have worked through the summer, October is the month that we have our full studio in operation. We are a teaching club and will instruct all newcomers to sculpt in clay and create pieces worthy of showing in your own home. Please come join us on Mondays in the Art Studio and begin your new creative hobby with our friendly, knowledgeable group.

Reminder - Keep Informed! The Board of Directors agendas, minutes and reports are available to residents in the SCV Library and online at www.suncity-vistoso.com. Board meetings are open to residents and attendance is encouraged. Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

Watercolor painters ask, “How can I use photos with my creative expressions?” Mel Stabin, who has written The Figure In Watercolor, gives some insight: “When we cannot paint people from life, you have three viable options; sketches, photographs, and memory. Although my preference is to use my sketches and memory for source materials, I do work from photographs, which can be useful when you want to capture the details of fleeting moments.” Join club members for painting on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
