How do we finance our operations? by Ruth Gitzendanner

Each year Sun City Vistoso Community Association Inc. has a budget approved by the Board at their April meeting. Management begins in December to put together their request for the funds needed for the next year’s operations. Each department head submits requests to the General Manager, who together with the Controller, translate all of this information into a draft budget that is discussed in meetings with the Finance & Budget Committee. Items are added, deleted and funds reallocated until Management, together with the Finance & Budget Committee, comes up with a budget that is presented to the Board of Directors at its April Study Session. At the Study Session, the Board carefully reviews the budget and makes any changes it feels are necessary. The budget is then approved by the Board at the April Board Meeting. The Budget becomes the basis for our annual dues that provide the funds to keep our Association running for the next year (July 1 to June 30) and sets aside funds for updates to our Association assets. It is the Board’s responsibility to assure there are adequate funds available to provide the services to protect, preserve and enhance the facilities and activities that the residents of our community expect. If you are interested in what will be in the budget for next year, you are welcome at the Study Session on April 14 when it will be discussed by the Board. We expect that this year’s budget will show no increase in homeowner dues.

Bob Mariani, General Manager The Year In Review by Bob Mariani

By the time you read this article the Board election will have taken place. As the newlyelected Board Members will be preparing to serve the community. With this change in our policy makers for Sun City Vistoso, it seemed like a very appropriate time to look back and review some of what has transpired over the past year. The most visible accomplishments every year are those building projects that take place. Therefore, I thought this area might be the most appropriate in which to begin a review. Because so many projects were completed in recent years, the need lessened and most of the work completed this year was focused on projects that had been underway; the Projection Room, Golf Maintenance equipment cover, Desert Oasis tennis court reconstruction, Catalina Vista Landscape Project and replacement of a number of air conditioning units in the Social Hall. Additionally, pickle ball lights were installed and the first phase of the Rancho Vistoso Blvd. Landscape Project was completed. With little exception these projects were finished on time, within budget and are proving to be assets to the community. While not a physical project, the process that has taken place over the last year to carry out the Long Range Plan should be recognized as a great accomplishment of the past Board. It has taken an enormous amount of time, energy and talent to transform the Long Range Planning Committee recommendations into organized Board Initiatives and from there to assign these Initiatives to committees and staff that in turn have completed in depth evaluations and in many cases affected processes to transform the initiatives into actions. It can’t be expected that unanimous agreement on the end result of the initiatives will be reached. However, a long range plan that recognizes the importance of people and a process that best assures the plan has continuity are important to every successful organization. SCV is very fortunate to have such a plan, fantastic people to manage and use the plan and a process for the plan to continue. In addition to the projects that were completed and the long range plan that was implemented, there were numerous accomplishments throughout the past year that include, but are not limited to, cost savings in areas such as workers’ compensation and medical insurance; continued and improved government relationships; approval of a cell site lease that provides additional revenue; improvements to communications through surveys, additional Listservs and an enhanced online Tipster; improved marketing that has increased Café revenues and public golf revenues; naming the golf course The Views Golf Club; and approving a governing document amendment that makes estate sales possible. The Board, committees, staff and many other very active Association Members should take great pride in yet another year of considerable accomplishments that have and will make a wonderful community that much better.

Hero Among Us 2011

Together with his active spouse Janice, Bob Cratty has lived in Sun City Vistoso some nineteen years. He is this year’s “Hero Among Us,” having been selected from a field of ten well-qualified nominees by the Board of Directors at its March meeting. Bob has a long history of significant participation and service, not only within Sun Robert Cratty City but in our wider community as well. Among other social and interest club activities, he is a long time member of the Hiking Club and is currently also a member of three bridge clubs and the Astronomy Club He has served on the Architectural Review Committee, the Finance and Budget Committee and currently on the Foundation Board. He was a member of the ad hoc committee to recruit and select a new General Manager a couple of years ago. However, it is Bob’s activities in astronomy and wildlife that have caught our attention over the past couple of years. He played a significant part in the wildlife photography survey that was conducted to support the project of establishing three protected wildlife crossings on Highway 77 (Oracle Road) and thereby to help maintain the natural qualities of our desert wild life. Even more impressively, however, Bob Cratty and some of his Astronomy Club colleagues are improving the quality of grade school science education in our wider community with the development of a remarkably successful cooperative program for introducing students at Coronado School to science studies through the wonders of astronomy. To further encourage interested students in pursuit of this interest, they have initiated providing them with basic telescopes. Thus far, Bob and his three colleagues, Harland Goertz, Sharon Hertle and Dave Thompson, have obtained some 200 telescopes for the students at Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

She now has added a couple of new items to her collection. One is not only beautiful but something you will not see everyday: jewelry made with rattlesnake bones. She also has mirrors made with handmade clay tiles. You won’t want to miss seeing Lori’s work. Jerry’s specialty is sterling silver jewelry. In addition to his beautifully designed pendants, earrings and bracelets, his line of crosses will be featured. Green Energy Committee Committee Chair Don Marier 825-4878 dmarier1@comcast.net First and Third Tuesdays, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

Ed Kennedy presenting at the February 23rd Rooftop Solar Electric Seminar.

The Green/Energy Committee invites anyone interested to participate in helping Sun City Vistoso homeowners learn about energy, water and other conservation subjects. Our topic this month is Ventilating Fans. The Green/ Energy Committee has recently revised its recommendations on home ventilation. As a quick preview, you will find that attic fans have some drawbacks and probably are not a good investment. However, whole house fans, if properly installed, can provide morning and evening comfort during summer months and save on air conditioning costs. Sun City Vistoso Tipster, April 2011

During this last month we have had some very informative and well attended presentations. The Government Affairs Committee tries hard to bring new topics of interest to the residents. If you have ideas that you would like brought to our community, please call us. Our meetings are open to all; feel free to stop by on the second Wednesday at 1 PM. As always, we ask that you consider joining. It’s an exciting Committee to belong to. Remember, Saturday, April 2, Oro Valley Council member Barry Gillaspie will be here at 10 AM, Social Hall/Navajo. Coffee and light refreshments will be available. Image Committee Lauren Thompson 306-9750

The Image Committee is on recess until next fall. Landscape Tut Tustison 825-9431 Third Wednesday, 9 AM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui Rancho Vistoso Landscape Update Project

Our Landscaped Common Area Subcommittee developed a landscape design plan for the portion of Rancho Vistoso from the Big Wash bridge up to the Del Webb intersection last spring. In March the implementation of that plan continued. Our Common Area MainFrom left to right: Karen Jonaitis, Judy Lynch and tenance crew inSusanne Clark place blue flags indicating the stalled new irrigalocation for beavertail prickly pear along Rancho tion. They also Vistoso. Photo by Jim Hobart. removed plants and decorative rock. The volunteers making up our Subcommittee flagged plants for removal. Then they staked the location for approximately 650 new and transplanted plants. Existing boulders were rescued from less visible locations and placed nearer the walkway and at the corner to complement the new plantings. Our Board-approved objective for our landscape is: Move toward a lower maintenance landscape that is more aesthetically compatible with the natural desert around us and enhances property values. Accordingly, you will find the plants in arrangements to suggest the natural desert. There are drifts of plants with gaps between the drifts rather than equally-spaced plants in geometric arrangements.

Marketing and Publicity Tut Tustison 825-9431 Fourth Thursday of the month, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui

The purpose of the Marketing Committee has not been very well established in the minds of many of our residents. To help clarify our objectives, this article reviews the directives from the Board of Directors to the Marketing Committee and the Marketing Staff. The directives cover three different and distinct aspects of our community and require different marketing plans: 1. Make active adults in the U.S. and Canada aware of the multitude of advantages and opportunities our community offers. The goal: increase interest in living in SCV, thereby raising home values for everyone in our community. 2. Inform Tucson area golfers what a great golf course we have that is now available for limited public play and for outside memberships. The goal: attract an increased number of annual members who are not residents, and increase the number of non-res idents who want to play our course on a daily basis. 3. Make outsiders aware that our fine Café is open to the public. The goal: increase utilization of the Café, resulting in higher income and more operat ing efficiency. Name Change Committee Chair Jon Olson 818-3705 First and Third Thursdays, 4:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Yavapai namechange@gmail.com

There will be one meeting of the Name Change Committee April 28, 4:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pima. We will recap what has been accomplished this year and what our work plan over the summer will consist of. The committee will not meet again until October 2011. At that time we will report on the results of our summer efforts to gather input about our name from retiree populations in the six states most populous in Sun City Vistoso. Our goal is to report our recommendation to the Board in November. Currently the committee is finishing up a series of focus groups with residents of Sun City Vistoso. We will share the outcome of these meetings at the April meeting. To all of you who have responded to our flyer questionnaire and online, we appreciate very much your comments and ideas. We wish to thank the realtors who participated in question and answer sessions as well as members of the Town of Oro Valley’s council, staff and leadership. Their comments were most helpful. A more complete summary will appear in our May article.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache Yea - Spring Is Here!

Spring is in the air and weeds are popping up everywhere! Watch for weeds and remove them while they are small. We would like to remind residents that it’s time to make sure those empty pots in front yards are filled with living plants, cactus, or flowers. Trim any trees or shrubs which overhang sidewalks or streets and block visibility of your house numbers or stop signs at corners. Remember, no artifacts of any kind are allowed in front or street-facing side yards, no matter how cute they may be. Winter residents should have someone maintain their yards during the summer months so the home looks cared for while they are away. It is important to have our community look nice, even if some of us are gone for part of the year. Be sure to notify the Administration of your summer address in case they need to reach you. Thank you for continuing to take pride by keeping yards neat and attractive throughout the year.

Clarification of the Posse, Neighborhood Watch and Neighborhood Pride: The Posse is a volunteer Neighborhood Patrol dedicated to the safety and protection of the residents and their property in our community in Oro Valley. Our goal is to provide two Posse members, in each of our two vehicles, on two shifts, 361 days a year. (We take off for Christmas Eve and Day and New Year’s Eve and Day. The Oro Valley Police Department adds additional patrols on those days). This means that we must cover 2,888 patrol shifts each year. The Posse works with the Oro Valley Police Department (OVPD) in a “Partnership of Prevention” to ensure the safety and security in Sun City Vistoso. OVPD representatives attend each monthly Posse Board meeting, providing valuable information on how the Posse can better patrol our neighborhood. The OVPD provides backup and support for each Posse shift. Posse members on Neighborhood Patrols identify situations that require investigation, but are not empowered or expected to act as law enforcement officers. In fact, Posse members are asked to remain in their vehicle and dial 911 to call an OVPD squad whenever they see something suspicious or need assistance. A Neighborhood Watch enhances but does not replace the Posse. The OVPD sponsored program is the combination of concerned residents and law enforcement working together to reduce residential burglaries and other crimes. It consists of a cohesive body of concerned citizens addressing issues that affect their neighborhood. The Oro Valley Police Department has a Crime Prevention Officer who organizes, trains and provides valuable information to the members of the neighborhoods in order to reduce and prevent crime. Neighborhood Watch provides participating community members a direct liaison with the Oro Valley Police Department. The Neighborhood Pride is an all volunteer SCV committee whose mission, approved by the Board of Directors, is to promote compliance with the governing documents of individual homeowners and selected common areas, in order to maintain property and esthetic values. In support of this mission, committee members, on a rotational basis, regularly tour assigned sections of the community to identify lots which appear to be out of compliance. Strategic Planning Committee (SPC)

SPC completed its first year of operation. The committee is reviewing its work for the year, including work to be done. Our major accomplishments include the Strategic Planning Process Map, and our work introducing and facilitating the planning process with committees assigned Strategic Initiatives (long range plans). The SPC encourages residents of SCV to review the process map and updated status reports of the Strategic Initiatives located in the Hospitality Room of the Vistoso Center. With all the Strategic Initiatives either completed or close to completion, there are unanswered questions and rumors regarding the outcomes of some Strategic Initiatives. The SPC recommended a FAQ (frequently asked questions) page be added to the SCV website. To access the new FAQ feature, log on to SunCity-Vistoso.com and click on the News & Information section, and then FAQ. You can review existing Questions & Answers or submit your own questions. Communications with SCV stakeholders is a vital part of the planning process. Tipster Editorial Chair Tom Polley 818-9073 Anticipated Tipster delivery of the May issue is Friday, April 29. Snopes is a website whose purpose is to dispel rumors. Their website states they are, “the definitive Internet reference source for urban legends, folklore, myths, rumors and misinformation.” You can search for a topic and find the truth on the topic. In our community, as we interact with each other, sometimes there are topics that surface where we’re not sure if the information we’re hearing is accurate. The Strategic Planning Committee and staff have developed a web page, FAQ, which is a place residents can go to find the facts on a topic. To find this page go to our website, www.suncityvistoso.com, select NEWS & INFORMATION and then select FAQ. At the time of writing this article, there was April 2011, Sun City Vistoso Tipster

The response to the Home Tour in February exceeded our wildest expectations! We quickly realized that we needed to limit the number of tickets sold in consideration of the owners of the open houses and their neighbors so they were not overloaded with people and parked vehicles. Unfortunately, as a result we had to turn away a large number of residents who were eager to buy tickets. Given the response, we will explore the option of organizing another such tour in 2013. A special thank you to those residents who made this possible by so generously opening their wonderful homes for us to enjoy and to learn about remodeling opportunities. Our thanks to Carol Guibert, who masterminded the event, Carol Wittels, the library volunteers, friends of the owners who worked as monitors, and residents who bought tickets making this event such an enjoyable fund-raiser for the library. Recreation and Fitness, Lonnie Davis Do I Need to Shower Before Going Into The Pool?

SCVCAI rules are that all swimmers should shower before entering the pool. After putting on sun-tan lotion, you are required to shower before entering pool. Going from the spa to the pool, it is always a good idea to shower. Each of us has a responsibility to follow good public health practices. By following the rules, it is also possible to lower the amount of chemicals needed to maintain water quality standards, leading to a healthier and more pleasurable swimming experience. Aerobic activities like running, biking and swimming strengthen your heart and increase your endurance. Strength training like weight lifting or resistance training builds muscle and bone mass, improves balance and prevents falls. It’s one of the best counters to frailty in old age. Flexibility exercises like stretching and yoga help prevent injury, enhance range of motion, reduce stiffness, and limit aches and pains. At first, just focus on getting any kind of exercise, whatever it may be. As exercising becomes your habit, try adding variety. If you keep at it, the benefits of exercise will begin to pay off. Association-Sponsored Fitness: Purchase a punch card from the receptionist in the Administration Office, $10/10 classes. You may use this card for all Sun City Vistoso-sponsored fitness classes. It can also be used for your guests. There is a $2 drop-in charge if you do not have a punch card. Cardio Chair Aerobics: Tuesday, Thursday, 10:3011:30 AM, Catalina Vista. Sunrisers: Low-impact aerobics class: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 7:15-8:15 AM, Auditorium. Sweat Stretch: Tuesday, Thursday, 7:30-9 AM, Auditorium. Water Aerobics: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9-10 AM, Sports Complex Pool. Zumba: Thursday, 5:15 PM, Auditorium. Personal Trainer: Call Ray Jerkins 219-3561 to make an appointment. Sports Complex and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation, page 2 of this Tipster. Tuesday, April 12, the Sports Complex pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, April 13, the Desert Oasis pool will close at 7 AM for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time. Special Note from the Sports Complex: Thursday, April 7, 1 PM, an orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held. Space is limited, so stop in and sign up. Golf Kim Griggs, Head Golf Professional

April marks my three-year anniversary as Head Golf Professional at SCV, now The Views Golf Club. I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoy my position and the people of Sun City Vistoso. I look forward to many years serving the golfing needs of the community. Easter Sunday, April 24, the Pro Shop will close at 3 PM. Due to a scheduling conflict, the annual Pro-Member Tournament will be held Monday, April 25 with a 1 PM shotgun start. The format is Two Best Balls (net) of the foursome. The cost will be $40 pp for annual pass holders and $50 pp for all others. This price includes a delicious hot buffet dinner in the Café and prizes, following play. A cash bar will be available. Please sign up in the Pro Shop by Monday, April 18. The Pro Shop requests private carts NOT be parked facing east, along the curb overlooking the putting green and the practice range in the golf cart parking lot. This is the staging area only for club carts to be used in the day’s events. Also, be courteous to other players and do not park your golf carts parallel to the range machine or the water fountain. This blocks access to cart parking, the course and practice facilities. Please park in the designated areas only. We have all noticed an increase in the number of cigarette butts on the course and in the parking lots. Please deposit these in your own ashtrays or the receptacles provided. Your efforts will go far in maintaining the beauty of The Views Golf Club. Michael Kropf, Superintendent

April is the time of year the golf course begins the transition from the overseeded winter ryegrass to the underlying Bermuda grass. This would be a good time to review some of the changes that were implemented during and after this winter’s overseed. The whole goal was to minimize the impact on the Bermuda grass to improve golf course conditions in April and early summer. The biggest change was that the seed rate was reduced in the fairways to reduce the competition between the two grasses. With less competition, the underlying Bermuda grass has better access to sunlight, moisture, and nutrients over the winter months. Fairway conditions are very acceptable this year, so the reduced rate of seed did not impact playability from a golfer’s standpoint. So now that it is April, the Bermuda grass will start to come out of dormancy and the fairways should really start to become greener and thicker as the weather gets warmer. This year the ryegrass will be chemically eliminated over a longer period of time. Instead of spraying the chemical in one or two applications it will be sprayed weekly for an entire month. This should reduce the negative impact of the fairways being brown and dead. The fairway aerification is going to be moved back from May

to June to give the Bermuda grass a better chance to recover when the weather is hot. Overall, the golf course should have good playing conditions all year long, and not just the winter and late summer months. Golf Advisory Payton Davies Chair 825-5352 First Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache

The golf course should be greening up about now, and it is one of the nicest times of the year to play. The Golf Advisory Committee continues to thank Mike Kropf for the wonderful job he is doing as our Golf Course Superintendent. The course continues to be one of the best in Tucson, with the exception of the bunkers, and we are addressing that issue this month. A beautiful course adds value to all our homes here in Sun City Vistoso, especially a course as outstanding as ours. Michael is one of the reasons we have the course in such beautiful shape, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. We also want to thank the 9-Hole Men’s Club who come out every Monday morning and repair divots in the fairways. Men’s 18-Hole Golf Club Pres. Jerry Rickard 825-7175 Membership Dick Boss 638-6644 Play: Wednesdays

March was a very busy month for the membership. A Bash BBQ/Veggie Burger lunch prepared by Ron Roberts was held following our March 9 golf outing. The Club Championship, a three-day event with three flights,a Championship Flight (blue tees) White tees and Gold tees, was held March 16, 19 and 23. The month ended with the much anticipated “The View Cup” (patterned after the FedEx Cup), held with much fanfare March 30. The Member/Guest Tournament will be held Wednesday-Thursday, April 13-14. Our 9-Hole club plays every Thursday morning with an 8 AM start time. Please arrive and check in at least one half-hour prior. Sun City Vistoso Women’s Golf Club Pres. Maryellen Haddock 825-1058 Membership Sue Pearsey 818-9777 Play: Tuesdays

It is hard to believe, but our season is rapidly coming to an end. President’s Cup is completed and congratulations go to our winner, Betty Bittle, and runner-up, Rita Quin. The Club Championship is well underway and there is only one chance left to qualify for Ace of Aces, but you do have several chances left to better your Ringers scores and bring down your handicaps. Elections for new officers will be held at the general meeting on Tuesday, April 5. Those who have agreed to run are: Pres., Mary Ellen Tovatt; VP, Payton Davies; Sec., Kay Swain; Treas., Joyce Friedericy; Handicap Chairman, Betty Bittle. Thanks to the Nominating Committee for their hard work in securing a slate. If you did not volunteer, but are interested in running for the Board, nominations will be taken from the floor at the meeting. The weather is finally cooperating, so those 8 AM shotguns are not quite so cold. Don’t forget to sign up and come enjoy the good weather and the great company.

Lady 9ers Pres. Jan Dunbar 818-9027 Membership Linda Miller 818-2716 Play: Thursdays

We had a very busy March with lots of events. A Pizza Party was held for the groundskeepers from our golf course. The Guys and Dolls Tournament on March 10 was hosted by our Lady 9ers League. We all enjoyed playing with the Men’s 9ers League. Our Invitational on March 24 was a huge success. Other clubs joined us in playing and a wonderful lunch was served in the Auditorium. Prizes were awarded. Ruth Bonfiglio, who was in charge of the event this year, has done a tremendous job. We will be starting our qualifying rounds this month for the State Medallion and Club Championship on April 7-28. Anyone wishing to join us, please call Linda Miller.

The very popular novel The Help by Kathryn Stockett was the subject of our March meeting. Members were glad they read this one, enjoying the true-to-life portrayal of relationships among women. A very lively discussion was led by Sharyn Rafieyan. Our April book is Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. Olive is a teacher, and the action is set in coastal Maine. Jayne Kunnemeier will lead. Also at the April meeting, we will vote on the selection of books for June, 2011, through May, 2012. In May we spotlight Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann. Bea Leonard will lead. Martha Sartoris 825-0092 October-May, First and third Wednesdays, 2 PM, Catalina Vista/Tohono

This month we’ll continue to read, think, discuss and grow, following the objectives of The Great Books Foundation. We’ll begin with William James’ The Moral Equivalent of War on April 6. Since achieving world peace will likely remain an impossible dream, the import of this essay is timeless. We’ll conclude the month, and this year’s season of enlightening exchanges, with a parable by master short-story author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The Minister’s Black Veil reveals a lesson about leadership and symbolism that works beyond the confines of the church and the early nineteenth century. Newcomers are invited to listen and offer their own insights, and come back for a lively new season next October when we daringly explore the Seven Deadly Sins: pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust. Check next month’s Tipster for details on book purchase or join our April discussions. Bowling—Pathfinders Don Andersen 825-1408 Mondays, 9 AM, Fiesta Lanes Bridge Duplicate Bridge Pres. Joan and other members will enjoy seeing these “wow that’s beautiful” items and also try to solve glazing problems you may be experiencing. Dick and Vern worked hard preparing and applying the new canvas on the wedging table. Please let them know what a great job they have done for our club. When cleaning clay off the wedging, table please use a damp sponge and only a damp sponge. Let’s see how long we can conserve our new canvas. Thank you to everyone who has made an effort to remove old clay projects from our shelves. You have made room for the firing committee to place work when unloading the kiln and also made room on the drying shelves for current projects. Vern has added a couple new shelves, but it is important to get your work out of the studio in a timely fashion. Check the bulletin boards in our studio because Gloria Ficalora will present a surprise workshop sometime in April. Thank you, Lei Bammel, for the jewelry workshops you presented. Wider participation or pluralism in the formulation of policy brings new voices into the process and, as a result, decisions are likely to be based on a broader consideration of the issues and a fuller assessment of the alternatives. Incidents of dogs being bitten by rattlesnakes are fairly common in our community and sometimes result in death. If your pet is bitten by a rattlesnake, treatment can be very expensive. As rattlesnakes are now active, the Club will offer snake-aversion conditioning for all resident dog owners on Thursday, April 21, 9 AM, Dog Park. Web Parton, a professional dog trainer, will perform the conditioning using live rattlesnakes and a stimulant collar. The cost will be $70 per dog. It should be noted that in the vast majority of cases, snake aversion training lasts for the entire life of the dog. Web will offer free rechecks in the Dog Park parking area starting at 8:30 AM for dogs that already have had the aversion training. The park will be closed for other dogs the morning of April 21.

Gun Club Warren Cuthbert 818-1282 Meeting Second Wednesday, October-May, 2 PM, Social Hall/Navajo Club does not meet June-September

For our March 9 meeting we had a very exciting program with the Arizona Citizens Defense League. J.D. “Duke” Schechter, Membership Director, along with Paul Lauff and Marilyn Bernstein, volunteers for the organization, were guest speakers. We will not have a regular meeting on Wednesday, April 13, but will instead have a spring luncheon at 11:30, Pizza Hut, Fry’s Shopping Center, First Avenue and Oracle. We need to let Pizza Hut know how many are coming, so please call Kermit Brindle, Vice President, 825-2426, or email to make your reservation. We will have a private room with separate checks. You can order from the menu or have the lunch buffet. The Gun Club is for people who have an interest in learning about guns, shooting, personal protection and firearm safety. In fact, you do not even need to own a gun or have any experience with firearms to come to Gun Club Meetings. We especially invite women, who are interested in learning about firearms safety and self-protection with or without a gun. People are frequently interested in learning the laws and regulations about carrying a gun, and what is required to obtain an Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit. Club members are encouraged to bring any new or interesting guns/accessories to the meeting for people to see or any guns they want to sell/trade. For safety, any gun brought to the meeting needs to be unloaded and have a trigger lock. You are invited to come to a meeting and see if our club activities would interest you. Club members often shoot on Thursday afternoons (Oct.-May) and Thursday mornings (June-Sept.) at Pima Pistol Range. Hand and Foot Bonnie Arneson 229-1084 Sundays, 1:30 PM, Desert Oasis

Come join us for a fun afternoon of Hand and Foot. If you have never played, it is very similar to Canasta and easy to learn. Please bring three quarters and be able to stay until 4 PM. You may play one time before joining. One-time dues are $5. We will not be playing cards on Easter Sunday, April 24. Havurah

Monitors for our group are so important to keep our room open to enable members to sew. A special thanks goes to all who take their time to give back. Changing our lock for the room went smoothly with very few problems. Thanks to all. Need orientation to use the machines? Training is Friday, April 15. Sign up at the message center in the Sewing Room, call Patty Phillips 591-6599. Thimblelenas has six groups of sewers: Pet Beds, Seniors for Kids, Sun City Vistoso Quilters, Casa Amigas, Machine Embroidery and Trauma Bears. Join one or join them all. We could use your polyester fiberfill scraps for making pet beds. The dogs love the wild fabrics although they say they don’t know the difference. The good news is that we have completed and delivered over 160 pet beds to the Humane Society. We feel good that this fabric is being used and not thrown away. Sheepshead Pres. Bill Allen 825-3095 Tuesdays, 10 AM, Desert Oasis

Last month we told you the story about when we visited Casa De Los Ninos, the temporary shelter for children at Speedway and 4th Ave. Here is our picture. This is what keeps our group alive. An update: Project Linus is no longer a contact point for us. We ask you not to call Elizabeth Stewart about Project Linus. Bring any projects for Show and Tell, along with questions, problems or anything else you’d like to share among this group of enthusiastic embroiderers. New members welcome. We’ll have one educational topic at the meeting. Owning an embroidery machine is not a requirement. Thimblelenas has a Viking Rose machine for members to be trained on. We’ve had some really cute projects being made on the Rose. For training, or a refresher on the Rose, contact Kaaren Drent 818-2343. For computer editing orientation, contact Sharon. The Sheepshead Club would like you to come play Tuesday mornings. Sheepshead, a card game known to many mid-westerners, originated in Germany many years ago. We play three, four and five hand versions, depending on attendance. If you would like to learn to play or need your skills honed, we can teach you. We remind you that we need to establish a new slate of officers for the coming year. Remember, Sheepshead players are known to play with less than a full deck.

Woodcarvers Kaaren Drent 818-2343 Saturdays, 9 AM, Craft Complex/Lapidary

Have you ever tried to make something look really old that isn’t? Or create an authentic wormhole? It’s not easy, but carvers try. One person’s rust is another’s patina. Such efforts occur several times a week among friendly folks in the lapidary room, where there are tools, literature, lockers, a magnifying lamp, a motorized tool sharpener and desk-level forced air vents to control dust. There is always plenty of encouragement, advice and camaraderie at hand. Barkcarvers meet Tuesdays, Noon-3 PM and Thursdays, 9 AM-Noon. Woodcarvers meet Saturdays, 9 AM-Noon.
