Association News From The Board of Directors

Our MISSION as the SCVCAI Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Vistoso as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCV Library. Board meetings are open to residents. Work Together for a Better Community by Dick Brammell The community has spoken regarding the proposed AFC (Aquatic & Fitness Center). Information presented during the AFC campaign by the residents opposed to the project stated that they would be supportive of less extensive upgrades. On March 30, the Board held a special study session for interested residents to discuss the future of the fitness center. Those present, expressing various opinions, worked together to agree that we should convene a new committee made up of a new group of individuals, to include members supportive of and opposed to the prior proposed AFC. They are charged with surveying the homeowners regarding their fitness center vote and views. That information will be used by the committee to work toward the development of a reasonable compromise to upgrade the fitness center. I have high hopes that as a community we can come together on this. Regardless of whether you were delighted or disappointed with the outcome of the vote, I think that it is important that we try to come together as soon as possible as a community. I believe that this is important for the future of our community. As we move forward I hope we all try to understand and accept each of our opinions and be open-minded to compromise. This community has a lot to offer and it is important that we have a community that is willing to work together for the betterment of it.

You’ve likely heard that the Board has formed a new committee to work on Plan B for the Aquatic & Fitness Center. This committee has been populated with Association members who opposed the proposed AFC project and members who supported the project. All of these individuals have committed to remain open-minded and work together to reach a consensus. As you can imagine, there have been diverse opinions expressed about this committee. Some of our members voiced opposition to pursing a fitness center project at this time. There have been various reasons for taking this position but in general the thought is that too many people are tired of the issue, and there is a need to give the matter a rest so a healing process can take place. On the other hand, I have heard from several Association members who support the idea of quickly pursuing this issue. Again, the basis for this position is varied yet the general feeling is that having people with very diverse views regarding the fitness center work together can be a significant step toward not only developing a compromise plan, but also providing a mechanism toward healing the community. There’s no doubt that both positions regarding the committee and project have merit, and both should be respected. Please keep in mind that a direction has been taken and a committee comprised of your peers with a wide range of views has been assembled to create what I call a compromise plan. If the Association membership gives this committee support, it is very possible that not only will an acceptable fitness center plan be developed but also an example of how the neighbors can work together to build trust and heal divisiveness.

The Active Health Committee is a newly created service and support SCV committee. The primary purpose of the committee is to identify and develop health and wellness programs in conjunction with SCV staff. Recognizing the important role that exercise and nutrition play in health and wellness, we will focus on the identification, advocacy and development of programs which promote a healthy, active lifestyle. This will include activities such as assisting in the development of support groups (please see insert in May Tipster), hosting speakers, demonstrations of active health programs (coming this fall), and suggesting new active health programs for incorporation among our varied existing fitness programs. We are now looking into how to encourage residents’ participation such that SCV can be among the most fit communities in America. ARC Architectural Review Chair Rodric T. The ARC would like to encourage home owners to use the resources Sun City Vistoso provides to assist with planning and carrying out new projects and improvements to homes and yards. You can find referral lists at the monitor’s desk in the Social Hall. These lists are for persons and companies who have done work in our community and should provide references. Talk to neighbors and people whom you trust who have completed similar projects. Once you have selected a possible contractor, check with the BBB, the Arizona state attorney general’s consumer department and other resources for past complaints. Be sure to get references and check them out. For special projects, such as solar installations, check with organizations like the Southern Arizona Solar Standards Board and Tucson Electric Power. Remember cheap is not always the best, and you want to love your project when it is finished. Remember that all exterior projects must conform to Sun City Vistoso standards and be preapproved by the ARC. The ARC approval is separate from an Oro Valley permit. aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. On March 28 we delivered 500 pounds of aluminum cans which netted the CAC $350. Fiscal year-to-date, we have received a total of $2,917. Our telephone reservation system ends May 1 and resumes in November. Reservations and pickups continue at the Loan Room on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. Although activity is less through the summer, we are still available to meet medical needs or provide equipment for your visitors. CAC thanks Sun City Vistoso residents for their support in recycling aluminum cans and attendance at the Pancake Breakfast in support of our Loan Room.

Mountain Vista Landscape Plan

Summer is fast approaching, and we bid farewell to those who leave our community during the upcoming hot months. Remember to have someone look after your home and yard while you are away, even if you are only gone for part of the summer. A messy yard is an indication that you are gone and puts your home and belongings in a possibly unsafe situation. With our summer monsoons, weeds grow in abundance and need to be removed as quickly as possible. With the upcoming summer storms, there are times when it’s necessary to reach homeowners due to roof tile damage and/or trees down. Don’t forget to leave your summer address and phone number with Administration should someone need to contact you. Have a great summer knowing that your community and home here will look just as nice when you return as when you left.

Areas to be Landscaped

The Board of Directors approved funding from the Asset Reserve for the Mountain Vista Landscape Update project. This three-acre project is part of our twelve-year plan for updating our seventeen acres of common area landscape. The project area runs along the northeast side of Rancho Vistoso beginning at Silverton and extending southeast down and around Vistoso Center. The top priority for this highly visible, image-making area was aesthetic appeal. Secondary objectives included the selection of low or no supplemental water use native or desert-adapted plants and plants that were low maintenance. The project began in late 2010 with the identification of major design issues. Site visits were made to view the work of potential landscape architects. Over last summer our landscape architect, KimleyHorn, inventoried the site and then, after two design and review iterations, created the final plan. Starting Tuesday, May 1, we are bringing back our Five to Free Club. Here is how it works: when you purchase five breakfast or lunch entrees with beverages you get your sixth breakfast or lunch entree free. Cards must be stamped at time of purchase. Ask your server to stamp your card after paying for your meal. Dinners are not included in this program. Five to Free Club cards are good from May 1 through September 30, 2012. It’s time to celebrate! We have a new amenity in SCV. There is now WiFi service available at Catalina Vista. The ILR classes will use it and, as observed with the installation in our other facilities, many other uses will be found for the service. What seemed to be a fairly simple project, bringing WiFi to Catalina Vista, turned out to be a long, drawn out project. Early on, it was determined that there wasn’t cable service in the building (who knew?) and it became an undertaking that involved persistence and financial assistance from ILR and CAC to bring it to fruition, but it’s done! So take your iPad or laptop, a cup of coffee and go sit in the Catalina Vista garden or near the fountain, surf and enjoy this new service! Pam Sarpalius - Programs/Facilities Director Changes

I would like to take this time to thank Stephanie Consalvo for teaching aerobic classes in SCV for twenty years; she has decided to retire. Stephanie will be missed by her class but you will still see her around the community. I am presently looking for an instructor to replace her. I am busy planning and signing contracts for events next year and getting ready to do performance reviews for the 22 employees under my supervision. Also the summer months allow us time to make changes to furniture and furnishings at the facilities. There is a rumor in SCV that the Association has a contract with a company that hauls homeowners trash. The Association does not have a contract with any rubbish company; each homeowner is free to contract with whomever they would like to use. The SCV Development Standards do say that “all trash containers shall be covered containers and may be stored on the Lot as to be not visible from Neighboring Property or Street. If such trash container is not, or cannot, be stored so as to be not visible from Neighboring Property or Street, then such trash container must be stored in the garage”. Buyer Beware

To some people, summer means light, fun, quick and easy reading. To others, it’s time to get involved with something heavy and non-fiction. We have some of each in the library: Pacific Crucible by Ian W. Toll, non-fiction, the most comprehensive book on the war at sea in the Pacific 1941-1942. Appetite for America by Stephen Fried, non-fiction, how visionary businessman Fred Harvey built a railroad hospitality empire that civilized the Wild West. Island of Vice by Richard Zachs, non-fiction, how Police Commissioner of NYC, Theodore Roosevelt attempts to clean up sin-loving New York in the 1890s, a very humorous take on the events of the day. The Shoemaker’s Wife by Adrianna Trigiani, fiction, an immigration story told by one our favorite fiction writers. It’s been some time since she’s produced a substantial novel, this looks like the one. The Good American by Alex George, fiction, just prior to the First World War, a young couple migrates from Germany to the United States. Their ship takes them to New Orleans rather than New York. This is a very wellwritten novel with humor, sadness and tragedy. Friends of the Library

The month of May is a time of change for golf courses in Southwest Arizona. The temperatures start to rise into the 90’s during the day. The perennial rye grass overseeded on the tees and fairways is not tolerant to the high temperatures so it begins to suffer. At the same time the Bermuda grass starts to grow out of winter dormancy and turns green. In a perfect world the rye grass would die out as the underlying Bermuda grass starts to grow resulting in a seamless transition between grasses. However, these new rye grasses are becoming more tolerant to the heat so they don’t die as quickly in May and June. The Bermuda grass is turning green, but the temperatures aren’t high enough to start overtaking the weakened rye grass. The result is a competition between grasses for sunlight, water and nutrients that end up with both grasses suffering which leaves large bare areas. This year the fairways are going to be sprayed with a herbicide to eliminate the rye grass in early May instead of June as in previous years. The two major reasons are to allow the Bermuda grass to recover with less competition, and expose the areas that need to be re-grassed. The areas that need to be re-grassed will then have a full summer to establish instead of just a few weeks. Please be aware that removing the rye grass will be very ugly, but the eventual recovery will provide a healthy stand of grass in the fairways, greens and tees going into next overseed. The Golf Advisory Committee (GAC) was tasked with finding a way to increase golf revenues with the least im-

pact to the SCV golfing community. Over the last month, the GAC, with input from all the golf club representatives, supports the following recommendation from the SCV Administration regarding tee times. There will be no change Thursday-Sunday. Monday will change from an 11:30 AM shotgun to a tee time day. Course maintenance will be moved to Tuesday morning, with the Ladies 18-Hole Club playing in a shotgun at 11:30 AM during the winter and reverse during summer. Other SCV golfers can join the ladies as they currently do now. The Men’s 18-Hole Club will continue to play in a Wednesday morning shotgun with tee times to follow. Congratulations to our new 2012 Club Champion, Howard Schultz. Sam Phillips and Ray Bruns won the White and Gold Tee awards respectively. Congratulations to all the flight winners in The Views Cup. With a total payout of $1,040 everyone who played in The Views Cup went home with cash. Thanks to Preston Sheriff who coordinated all aspects of this event. The Views Cup will be an annual tournament, so everyone should try to accumulate points to qualify for this great event in 2013. Points will start accumulating the first Wednesday in November league play. April ended our tournament season with the Member/ Guest event. Over 55 teams entered and all of the grand prizes were awarded to members and their guests.

The next regular meeting of the Club will be after game play on November 8. The Annual Club Championship was played on the four Thursdays in April, followed with a burger bash on April 26. Prizes were awarded to the club champions at the event. While there will be no regularly scheduled games in May thru October, those members remaining in SCV will continue to play by making their own pairings and tee times. During the past season, several members have volunteered each Monday to fill divots on all fairways and repair ball marks on all greens from November-April. The golf maintenance crew and the Pro Shop have expressed their appreciation to the Club for the volunteer efforts. All men, including nonresidents, are welcome to join the Club. The SCV Emerge! group will be collecting used cell phones/chargers and Blackberrys for use by women who are victims of domestic violence who participate at Emerge! It is with great sadness, but also great pride and gratitude to announce that the Seniors for Kids Computer project has been retired. Since 1999 the Seniors for Kids computer project has refurbished and delivered 851 computers to underprivileged children in the Tucson area. The first computer went out March 15, 1999, and the last one March 22 of this year. Machines have been delivered with Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, XP and even a few with Vista. The program was started by Dick Butler and Brian O’Neill at the suggestion of Grant Bergemann, the originator of Seniors for Kids. Over the years four other people have assisted with this project: Marvin Lunsford, a former SCV resident; Don Brohaugh, Dave Warner and Tom Geisler. In the early days we got some really good technical help from Sid Hattox although he did not actually refurbish any machines. A simple thank you doesn’t begin to express the feelings of gratitude we feel for these volunteers who spent endless hours on this project.

The Vistoso Cyclists continue riding from Mountain View Plaza every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7:30 AM. Club members Harvey Ferguson and Margie O’Hare completed a three-week, 1000-mile self-contained bike ride from New Orleans, LA to St. Augustine, FL April 8. They rode through rural and coastal Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and across the Florida panhandle, ending at the Atlantic Ocean. The weather was good and they only had to ride through one lightningthunder-rain storm. They said, “We had no mishaps or bike problems, and met many nice people”. This trip was the final leg of the Southern Tier bike route across America that began in San Diego in 2007. They split the ride into four segments: San Diego to Tucson; Tucson to El Paso; El Paso to New Orleans. Previously, Margie and Harv rode the Pacific Coast from Canada to Mexico. Last month we gave justice, discussion-wise, to the thorny issue of illegal immigration as it affects our nearby border with Mexico. This month we delve into history, mystery and myth revolving around the legend of Dracula. Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian has been glowingly described as “a sumptuous quest-novel with an intelligent woman as protagonist and narrator”. We will be meeting in June and throughout the long, hot summer (in air-conditioned comfort), reading and dissecting selections from a new book list that will be distributed to participants at our meeting in May. Thanks to Joan Kelley we have a beautiful new set of glaze samples. Old dry and overly wet clay has been reclaimed and Bob Arms has repugged it. Free to club members, it is available to the right just inside the door of the Clay Studio. In exchange, you might want Maria and Mary at the Storyteller workshop to donate a bowl or two to the Empty Bowls project. The Storyteller Workshop filled quickly and was fun for all attendees. Janice did an outstanding job in presenting the workshop. The participants included their own bits of personality and whimsy to create a diverse set of Storytellers. Watch the window at the Clay Studio to see some of these fascinating creations. Joan Brown taught a class on dipping glazes and how to use the Potters’ Choice glazes. Joan Kelley taught a class on using washes and oxides. Both do excellent clay work and are great teachers. Classes were well attended. The next Clay Club meeting will be in the autumn. Here in the desert we need to protect our pets from many natural dangers: cactus, bobcats, javelinas, coyotes, rattlesnakes and poisonous toads. Colorado River toads are highly toxic and even deadly to dogs who lick or bite these toads. They appear in great numbers after heavy rains in the late spring and during the summer. If you are concerned about your dog coming in contact with a toad, consider having your dog aversion-trained to keep him from ever approaching a toad. Fido’s Friends will be offering Colorado River toad aversion training by professional trainer Jay Smith in early May. She’s been a member of the Program and Library Committees for over four years each, and active in the Colonial Virginia and DAR Special Interest Groups. Officers were elected for 2012-2013. When we meet in the Sewing Room on Tuesday afternoons to cut fabric scraps into small pieces for the pet beds, we have a great time doing something worthwhile but also socializing. Yes, we talk about everything! We get such a good feeling making these pet beds from scraps that otherwise would be thrown out into the landfill. Great news regarding the results of our last meet of the season at Green Valley Championships March 17. We won the small team championship with 23 golds, two silvers and one bronze. Topping off a full winter season of events and great tennis, the men’s senior USLTA team went undefeated in winter league play. The Town of Oro Valley will transition its monthly VISTA online newsletter to a quarterly, limited-print publication. April 2012 is the last monthly edition. A quarterly publication schedule will free up some of the project’s budget, allowing us to print a limited quantity of hard copies which will be available at Town-sponsored meetings and events.
