Association News From The Board of Directors

Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents. Fitness Center Equipment Committee by Richard Brammell I would like to report to the community about the process of the Fitness Center Equipment committee and the future process for the Equipment committee. The committee is comprised of Judy Bjorling, Sharon Hertle, Lonnie Davis, Ray Jerkins, Michael Takerian (chair) and myself as board liaison. The committee has held a total of nine meetings since December 6, 2012. The committee has toured the adult communities of Sun City-Anthem, Sun City West, SaddleBrooke HOA #1 and #2, SaddleBrooke Ranch and Highlands at Dove Mountain. It toured the fitness centers of Body Basics, Anytime Fitness, Planet Fitness, LA Fitness, Prestige Fitness, Platinum Fitness and Chuze Fitness. The committee received input from Chris Litten, NSCA certified, on the current and future trends for senior fitness. The committee met with or discussed with the manufacturer representatives from FreeMotion, Life Fitness, Matrix, Paramount, Concept 2 and NuStep. The committee has tentatively planned to make a presentation to the Board in June. The presentation will be the committee’s recommendations and the reasons for them. The committee would plan to have the presentation placed on SCOV’s website for all residents to view. The Board would not need to make a decision on the committee’s recommendation until sometime after their July or August meeting. Rancho Vistoso Blvd. Median Landscaping As I write this article, bids are being secured from several landscape contractors to install new landscaping in the RVB (Rancho Vistoso Blvd.) median. As with the last couple of re-landscaping projects, this is the next phase of a 12-year asset reserve plan to update the common area landscaping that, in most cases, is more than 25 years old. There has been criticism of the re-landscaping that has been completed to date (some of that criticism is due simply to the fact that any money was spent, some residents feel that the re-landscaping program is of little value.) Some criticism is due to the type of plants that have been installed or the design. All are valid criticisms. Yet the value of this program, the type of plants installed and the landscape designs are all very subjective. Many residents are very pleased with the results and the plan. Although I am sure not everyone will agree, I have received considerable positive feedback regarding the Catalina Vista landscaping now that the plants have matured and bloomed. The input is not as positive yet regarding the Mountain Vista landscaping. However, keep in mind that the new plantings went through a cold winter where so many of them suffered. As the plants revive from the cold and the shrubs that looked good on paper but not so good in real life are replaced, the overall aesthetics of the grounds improve on a daily basis. One sure thing is that re-landscaping will reduce water use and labor required to maintain the old, overgrown, woody plants. Now back to the RVB median landscaping. If all goes as planned, this landscaping installation will take place early this summer. Most of you will be pleased to know that the appearance will be similar to the new landscaping in medians outside of Sun City with lots of cactus that will be very low maintenance, and will provide the beautiful appearance that you have been seeking.

Fitness Center Assessment Information The assessment for the Fitness Center is payable now, but you have until June 30 to pay it or make your first installment. The bill for the assessment will be a part of the annual homeowner billing which has been mailed out. However, you may come by the Vistoso Center or mail your payment for the assessment any time before June 30, 2013.

Our April program had people stretching, trying Zumba and Chair Aerobics. It also introduced our audience to “fartlek,” the Swedish word for “speed play,” a great way to make your walking more enjoyable while you improve mind-body awareness, strength and stamina. Simply pick a physical point up ahead in your outdoor walk (like a lamppost or a tree) and walk faster or run until you reach it. Do it several times. Indoors, you might want to try interval training: pick up the pace for a certain amount of time, go back to your regular pace, and repeat. HIT (High intensity interval training) exercising for short periods of time as fast as you can go, will also burn fat. Why not try something new this summer? Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room. Please help us by recycling your aluminum cans, but place your trash in your trash containers. CAC volunteers delivered their eighth can load for the year to the recycling center. Those 740 pounds netted $458.80, bringing the year-to-date poundage to 4,140 and the revenue to $2,546.40. Summer has arrived and the Loan Room is quieter than through the winter. It is the perfect time for those residents still around to come to visit us and see what equipment we have available to loan. Since the beginning of the Sun City Oro Valley Posse, not many Posse members have been able to claim the remarkable achievement of serving the Posse and the community for 20 years, but six of them recently have. Those six recently attended a Posse Committee meeting where their outstanding and valuable service was recognized by the Committee and the Oro Valley Police Department. Whether you are here or away for the summer, it’s time to remember: • Weeds in cracks of driveways, sidewalks, and where the cement meets the asphalt of the street are the responsibility of the homeowner to remove. • Cactus and/or bushes in your yard should not extend over the sidewalk as to be a danger to walkers. • Trees must be kept trimmed up high enough over the sidewalk as not to injure walkers or block visibility of a stop sign. • Exposed soil, or bare dirt, on your property needs to be covered by rock. • On a corner lot, check the street-facing side part of your yard for weeds and/or other possible infractions of the governing documents. • Artifacts, including empty pots, are not allowed in front yards. Pots should be planted with live plants, as artificial ones are not allowed. A Tipster can be mailed to you while you are away for $3 per issue. Stop by the Vistoso Center to arrange for this. The audio-visual upgrades are continuing to move ahead. With approval of the Association budget, there are funds available to install video equipment in each room along with audio improvements. These will be the meeting rooms best configured for activities requiring audio-visual aids. The auditorium upgrades have been specified for bidding purposes. Since there is a specific, limited amount of money available from the asset reserve account, these items have been prioritized so that the most important are purchased first. We will start with new projectors (including adding a new one for the center of the auditorium), cameras and associated switching equipment. The Pickleball court addition project came with the recommendation that the next two courts be added south of the bocce courts. This will allow even more courts to be added in the future should that be necessary. Fourteen capital projects are being evaluated to prioritize them. It is our intention to give the Board a recommendation for the top three to five projects to assist them in establishing a development plan for these projects.

October 19 brings a wonderful piano concert from Mary Stockdale. November 11 brings country music from Joni Harm. There will be other events through December and our 2014 calendar is getting full. Entertainment in the comfort of your own community is convenient, but the bonus is the low ticket prices. I always love when residents bring to my attention entertainers that they have seen and would like to perform here. If the contract price is right, I’ll do my best.

This month’s Tipster Editorial Committee meeting will be Friday, June 14, 9 AM, Vistoso Center/Apache. Assistant Manager - Robin Coulter What’s In a Name?

As you may be aware, the Board recently approved several name changes to buildings and rooms. This is the completion of an initiative from the 2009 Long Range Plan to, “update place names to create a more current, youthful image.” There have been two resident committees that have studied the initiative (Image and Marketing) with a final recommendation coming from the Marketing Committee regarding the new names. Over the next few months you will begin to see these changes implemented in our community. By the beginning of July you will see four new directional signs (replacing the teal and pink signs) that will have the new logo at the top. They will be in the new Town mandated design for directionals along Rancho Vistoso Blvd. and will have a current, updated look. Also in the next couple of months, the signage at the west and east gateway to the community and the five monument signs at the entry of the Mountain Vista Complex and the Welcome Center will be updated. I met recently with Town managers and the manager of the Rancho Vistoso HOA, and both were very excited about the design of our new signage. On July 1 the website and Tipster will begin using the new building and room names. A flyer is in this Tipster (and also in July’s edition) with the new names and building layout for easy identification. The Desert Oasis rooms reflect desert plants (Saguaro and Ocotillo). The Catalina Vista’s name is in reference to the mountains, so the rooms are named for mountains (Mt. Lemmon, Mt. Kimball and Pusch Ridge). The Welcome Center’s rooms are simply named Conference Rooms 1, 2 and 3. The Mountain Vista Complex is where the Activity Center, Artisan Center and Aquatic & Fitness Centers are located. The Activity Center’s rooms are Navajo, Hohokam and Hopi. The Papago room was renamed Hohokam. Internal signage is also in development. These are the signs above the room doors providing information and direction within the community (Bag Drop, RV Parking, AED locations, etc.). If, by July 1, the internal signage hasn’t been completed, there will be temporary signs placed above the room door to identify the room name. June is the ugliest time of the year for the golf course. The winter rye grass has been chemically removed and has turned brown, but the underlying Bermuda grass hasn’t had enough time to start growing fully. The humidity is very low so the water in the soil evaporates quickly, making the golf course look brown. This year, aerification of the fairways is being done prior to the application of the chemical to remove the rye grass. The hope is that the aerification and topdressing will give the Bermuda grass a head start to begin growing more quickly. In prior years, the chemical was applied first to remove the rye grass and reduce competition, but it seemed to slow the Bermuda grass following aerification. This year, the priority has shifted from trying to deal with the competition of the two grasses, to dealing with salts that have built up in the soils over the winter. Removal of salts requires lots of aerification with sand topdressing, addition of drainage to alleviate wet areas and increased amounts of irrigation to leach out the salts. However, in May and June the water requirements are so high, with the hot temperatures and low humidity, that over-watering is not an option, making aerification is very important. By the start of June, all the fairways, tees and greens will be aerified and fertilized to encourage the growth of the Bermuda grass. Please be patient with the condition of the golf course in June. Lots of work is going into improving the course. After June, the course will be really green for the rest of the summer. Our golf course received the GEM (Golf Endorsed by Members) Award from the Arizona Women’s Golf Association. Our course was one of only 22 in the state of Arizona to win this award. Courses are evaluated on customer service, merchandise availability, food and beverage, club house and facilities, course conditions and playability for women. It’s nice that an independent group acknowledges what we know we have at The Views. You may have noticed that the right-hand pond on hole 10 was drained in May/June. This was to install a wall around the irrigation system intake, allowing the water to be drawn from mid-level of the pond. The sediment on the bottom of the pond has caused and is causing problems with the pumps, sprinklers, filters and bunkers. The pond will be drained again in September to dredge out the sediment.

Writer’s Club Forming All writers are welcome, prose or poetry. Our goal is improving writing skills. Monthly meetings will be at members’ homes or a SCOV facility, last about two hours and feature the writers reading pieces they submit. As each piece is read, comments by the other members present will focus on content, creativity, grammar and punctuation. Only positive comments will be allowed. Topics are chosen by members monthly; the topic, however, does not have to be followed. You may find this is a good venue for starting the memoir you have always wanted to write, or the next great American novel may start right here in SCOV. George Jelton is the new club champion, defeating Ray Hicks in a very close match. The past month also saw two tournaments. On April 24, first place was shared by Jay Wilala and Terry Henrichs. Second place was a four way tie among George Jelton, George Riley, Bert Bertera and Hal Hufford. The May 5 tournament was won by Tony Kulpa. John Tiedje came in second. We had our first evening Bocce meeting on May 1. We all had such a good time. Weather was perfect and it felt so good to be outside with friends and playing a really fun game. On June 3, we will review the first book in our new list for the 2013-2014 season: The Boy In The Suitcase by Lene Kaaberbol and Agnete Friis. This book deals with the criminal mistreatment of women and children, compassionately told from a feminine perspective and featuring female characters you can believe in: a Red Cross nurse, wife, and mother of two and a compulsive do-gooder. Opening a friend’s locker, she discovers a suitcase, and inside the suitcase is a three-year-old boy; naked and drugged, but alive. Newcomers and guests are always welcome. Great Books Pres. The purpose of this new club is to provide a community drum circle for any woman wanting to connect with others through hand drumming, using African Djembe drums, hand-held Native American frame drums and other small percussion instruments. Recent clinical studies have also conclusively documented some of the many physical, mental and emotional benefits of purpose-driven drumming.
