From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the Sun City Oro Valley Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Merits of an Active Adult Community by Bob Hefner A few weeks ago I received an email from my eldest daughter stating she was beginning to look for a retirement home in the Southeast within reasonable commuting distance to her children and grandchildren who are in the Boston and New York areas. She said she would like my advice as to what she should be looking for in an active adult community. This email dumbfounded me for two reasons. First, wasn’t it just last week that my wife was helping this daughter get ready for her high school prom? And second, when was the last time my daughter asked me for advice? In thinking of how to respond to her request, I started thinking of the questions I would ask of myself, the residents and the management or developer of a community under consideration. I thought of lots of questions but among them would be: should it be a new development or an older, wellestablished community? What are its amenities and the participation of its residents in the community? What is the financial strength and plan for the maintenance, renovation and replacement of facilities and equipment? What is the strength and style of the management of the community? Plus the age-old-realtor’s comment, location, location, location. As I thought of my answers to these and the many other questions I would use to identify the ideal active adult community, I realized I was describing Sun City Oro Valley.

SCOV Five Year Plan

One of the Board of Directors’ goals this fiscal year is to develop a new five-year plan. The development of this plan will largely be the responsibility of the Strategic Projects Committee and management with the Board overseeing the project and eventually approving it. The diverse SCOV (Sun City Oro Valley) membership and wide array of amenities plus a huge menu of activities offered by both the Association and clubs create a significant challenge in developing a five-year plan. Many of you may work or have worked for a corporation with short, mid-and long-term plans. These corporate plans are difficult enough to formulate even though there may be reasonable unity and focus among management and employees of the company. Although SCOV is a relatively small corporation, it is complex in that the approximately 4,500 residents of the community chose to live here for a wide variety of reasons and have a wide range of visions for the future of SCOV. In an effort to make the challenge of developing the new five-year plan more palatable, the first step that was taken in the process was to submit an extensive survey to the membership. The approximate 2000 responses to the survey will provide valuable information about the members and your desires which will greatly assist in creating a valid and viable plan. The survey will only be as useful as the team working with the survey and other information, which, as noted above, is the Strategic Projects Committee. This committee was purposely populated with residents who are as diverse as the Association membership and will also be objectively receptive to the input received through the survey and other means. With good data and thoughtful people working on the five year plan, the Association will have an excellent document that will provide general, if not specific, direction in some cases for the near future of the community. The important factor is that this plan and future five-year plans will offer current and prospective residents insight as to SCOV’s vision and will provide guidance for financial, social, amenity and other future planning.

Stress reduction is the goal of many people in our modern world, but does it really have a positive influence on wellbeing and cognitive functioning? Join us Friday, October 11, 1 PM, Auditorium (no tickets necessary) for Active Health’s first program of the season: Stress: A Balance between Too Little and Too Much. Mary-Frances O’Connor, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Arizona, will be our speaker. Her research focus is on the influence of immune functions on psychological wellbeing. Learn why moderate stress is actually good for us, while too little or too much stress isn’t good. Although the causes of stress can be difficult to remove from one’s life, the impact of stress can be reduced through various stressreduction techniques. Rolling window screens may be used on any side of the dwelling. They may be tinted bronze, black, or any col or that reasonably blends with the main body color of the house. 3. Screen and security doors (see Sect II.B., Dev. Standards) may be painted weathered brown or the color of the body of the house or trim (see Appendix D, Dev. Stan dards). Approval must be granted in advance of installation. 4. Exterior roll-down mechanical shutters are not permit ted in the front or street-facing side yard of the dwell ing. Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Oro Valley. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room. Please help us by recycling your aluminum cans, but place your trash in your own trash containers. On the first trip to the scrap yard for fiscal year 2013-2014 we delivered 460 pounds of cans and received $271.40 for the benefit of the CAC (Community Association Committee). Many of our residents are coming back from summer trips, and club activities are increasing. If you need extra tables and chairs for these events, come to the Loan Room to make reservations or pick up items you need. Medical items and some children’s items and toys are also available. Signage Update

One of the 2009 Long Range Plan recommendations adopted by the Board was to update and improve gateways and signage. Two of our committees studied this issue (Image and Marketing), resulting in a design proposal which was also approved by the Board in early 2013. The project has resulted in our signs receiving an extensive refresh and update including the addition of stacked rock, new backing and lettering, the new logo and lighting. There has also been the addition of directional signage, landscaping and nightscaping to enhance the overall effect. Opinions have been mixed, but overall we are receiving favorable feedback. I have received many comments from people outside our community, including Town officials, of how much they like them. The signs are placed in the asset reserve for review every 15 years, so it will be a while before this will be done again. We are in the process of implementing Signage Phase II which includes directional signage within the boundaries of the common area, building names, room names, etc. In preparation for this phase, an inventory has been taken of all the signage in the community, and a standard has been created to keep the signage consistent and professional looking. Each week there is a manager on duty to answer the emergency phone number that is listed in the Tipster. This number was established for use only in the event that you see a maintenance emergency or something that is wrong with one of the Sun City Oro Valley facility buildings or grounds. While I was on duty one weekend night, I received a call from a resident, around 9 PM, who stated she thought something looked suspicious at the house across the street from her. I advised her that I could do nothing and that she needed to call 911 and let the Oro Valley police investigate. If you see something in your neighborhood that looks suspicious don’t hesitate, call 911 and give the police the details. Don’t investigate yourself. We want everyone to be safe. Any new painting of the side and rear yard perimeter fencing around your lot must be done using Weathered Brown. All fencing must be painted Weathered Brown by January 1, 2016. If you share a fence with your neighbor, it is not too early to talk about the deadline. Café News The Café is going to change it up a bit this month and offer two different dinner specials: the Friday, October 11, dinner will feature roast leg of lamb or herb-baked salmon and the Friday, October 25, dinner will feature prime rib or coconut crusted orange roughy fish. Cold and Flu Season Coming

Gym germs are, in essence, the same germs that are found on door knobs, sinks and handrails. One should not use the germ phobia excuse as reason to skip the gym as a whole. Being forewarned is being forearmed. When it comes to protecting yourself and your immune system from these grimy germs, all it takes, for the most part, is common sense, meaning, don’t touch your eyes, ears or nose while at the gym. Good hand hygiene is a must, making sure to wash hands thoroughly before and after gym use. By attending the gym regularly, you’re likely to have a stronger immune system than someone who does not work out. Therefore, you can resist germs better than the general population. Gym etiquette is no longer just re-stacking your weights when you are done lifting, but now it is wiping the perspiration drops you left behind on the head rest or when you are on the blue mats. Think about where your shoes have been. So next time when you see the laminated sign, “Please wipe down after use” staring at you as you approach the treadmill or hit the mats for some abdominal crunches, do it!

Please keep in mind that the Fitness Center construction will require that the swimming pool be closed from time to time which may result in cancellation of classes that are held in the pool. The staff is certainly ready for another busy year and we are eager to serve our annual pass holders and residents to the very best of our ability. The Golf Now program continues to be a success as does inviting outside groups to experience our spectacular golf course. These groups will be booked around our annual pass holder times as much as possible. Please remember that pass holders do have a eight-day advance booking option. The golf course is currently closed for overseeding and will remain so through Thursday, October 10. We will re-open on Friday, October 11. We will be cart path only until Friday, October 25. Our schedule will be as follows when we open back up from overseeding: tee time days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday) will begin at 7:30 AM, Tuesday’s Shotgun will begin at 11:30 AM and will include The 18-Hole Ladies Club and limited open play (so pass holders please take advantage of your advance booking option on this day), Thursday’s Shotguns will be 8 AM (9-Hole clubs only) and 11 AM (open play), and for those of you who choose to walk/and/or ride the course during the closed period or anytime in October, please remember that all traffic, pedestrian or vehicular, must remain on the cart paths. Superintendent - Michael Kropf October is the start of a new season of golf. The golf course has been overseeded so there are different colors of “green” on the fairways, tees and greens. This is a good time to think about changes from the summer to winter play. The divot mix will be replaced with a sand and seed mix that is to be used only on fairways and tees that have been overseeded. This year holes #4, 8, 15, and 18 will not be overseeded so please don’t put seed in divots on those holes. The seed will germinate during the winter and when the Bermuda grass goes dormant the germinated seed mix will leave green spots all over the fairway. This also applies to all of the roughs since they aren’t overseeded either. This helps reduce extra maintenance required to chemically treat and remove the green spots. Another reminder is that the course will be very wet following overseeding. Even though the water is slowly turned off prior to the course reopening, the soil will be very saturated. Golf carts will be regulated to the cart paths for about two weeks to allow the fairways extra time to firm. Please try to keep all four tires on the cart path. A lot of work went into fixing cart path edges this summer, and it will not take long for damage to occur when golf carts are driven with two of the wheels in the grass. Golf Advisory

The recent rains created a significant problem on hole #5. Long-term fixes to drainage are being considered which may reduce some of the grassy areas currently in play. Please talk with your club officers or GAC (Golf Advisory Committee)members to learn more. GAC feedback has been requested on potential impacts to golfers. In an effort to improve playability and interest in The Views golf experience, a test of forward tees on six holes is underway. The current tee boxes will remain unchanged. While no attempt is being made to handicap these temporary tees, interested golfers can test them at their convenience. We hope to receive feedback over the year. Mike and crew will be overseeding, with hole 4, hole 8, hole 15 and hole 18 not on the rotation this year. The collar areas on front nine greens will receive a wider area of overseed grass. While playability is anticipated to improve, this test will be contingent on Bermuda grass condition next summer.

Additionally, we have The Views Cup where players accumulate points throughout the season. Qualifiers, determined by participation, are eligible for the finals, to be held on April 10. Our first Bash will be held on October 23, following play. Remember to get your tickets early, as they won’t be sold at the door. The Views Mens Nine Hole Golf Club

With summer winding down and our northern visitors returning, we are ready to activate our nine-hole league play. Our first official day is Thursday, October 17, with an 8 AM shotgun start. Please check in at the Pro Shop 30 minutes before starting time. Our first scheduled meeting will be November 14 after golf. All new members are welcome including non-residents who purchase a nine-hole annual pass. Please contact membership chair Jack Saatkamp. Membership dues are $45 per year and can be paid through December 1 without penalty. Checks should be made payable to Sun City Oro Valley Men’s Nine-Hole Golf Club and placed in the envelope in the Men’s Nine-Hole Club book at the Pro Shop. There will be no golf played on October 3 and 10 due to overseeding on our course. October means the monsoons are pretty much history, the temperatures are dropping and the influx of more-thanwelcome seasonal residents has begun. Upcoming events will include The President’s Cup to be played the week of November 6. This flighted, singleelimination tournament will conclude on November 13. The Governor’s Cup, which is a flighted two-man team event will be held on January 23, 26 and 30. Future events to look forward to include the Club Championship scheduled for March 20, 23 and 27 and the ever popular Member/Guest Tournament, a two-day event which is slated for April 17 and 18. The Oro Valley Police and Foundation personnel in attendance are no longer allowed to handle the items brought in for disposal. The person with the medications will need to separate the pill type items and the liquid or jell type items themselves and will then be shown which Oro Valley Police containers are to be used for the deposit. The items do not need to be opened; they can be deposited in the original bottle/container in which they are packaged. 2 We no longer can accept syringes, inhalers or empty medicine bottles and things like elastic or other bandages, and other non-medication items. 3. Only prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins/supple ments, etc. items can be accepted.

Home Improvement Skills Transferred to Artistic Talent by Paul Mercer

Elaine Woods, one of many accomplished artists in Sun City Oro Valley, grew up like many of us; a plain and ordinary life spent going to school and sporting events, talking with friends about the latest trends and romances and not having an inkling what the future held for her. When she married Patrick Woods, her life changed more than most new brides could imagine. Pat was a teacher, and an educator and not just for his students at Milwaukee Tech High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Pat was hooked on fixing up old houses. “You can do it” he would say and taught Elaine enough so that she caught the building bug from Pat and the self-confidence that comes from making things with your own hands. Together they rehabbed six houses and then built two new ones. Elaine got to the point where she felt she could do anything because of her remodeling experiences. When they moved to SCOV (Sun City Oro Valley) six years ago, they, of course, updated the house they bought. When that was finished, Elaine had time to look around SCOV and she discovered the art studio, and also the gift shop, where the artists’ creations are displayed in a professional setting of glowing display cases and beautiful window displays. She put the years of hands-on remodeling into use, only this time in creating fine artwork. She joined the silversmith and lapidary shops, and eventually her pieces were carried in the gift shop. These days, Elaine is creating silver jewelry incorporating found shards of Mata Ortiz pottery, creating jewelry from cactus leaves using the lost wax casting process, creating decorative gourds with different textures, colors and trims and finally, she is weaving. Elaine and other SCOV artists will be showing their art on Saturday, November 2 at the Activities Center. You will find that your SCOV neighbors are interesting and talented artists who may have that special piece of artwork for you. Plan on stopping by and meeting them.

A beautiful thing - Displays 9/11 items from New York by John Njaa

This upper photo shows Sun City Oro Valley Woodworkers Club member, Kent Lombard, showing off his latest project, an oak display cabinet. How that came to be built and its purpose is Photo by John Njaa an interesting, poignant story. On January 8, 2011, the GRFD (Golder Ranch Fire District) crew (shown below) was on duty at Fire Station 374 in Sun City Oro Valley. They were among the first to arrive at the scene of the shooting of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and others. They assumed command of the scene and began treating those who were shot. Nine year old Christina Taylor-Green was one of those. The GRFD crew and Christina’s father, John Green, stayed in touch after the event, and a friendship grew. Mr. Green learned that GRFD was looking for an appropriate item from the 9/11 disaster in New York to display in Tucson. Mr. Green put them in touch with a group of New York firefighters who invited the GRFD crew to New York. In New York, the GRFD crew met a group of firefighters who survived the collapse of the Twin Towers. They were taken to a special memorial where one of the New York firefighters in that survivors group presented GRFD with the jacket and helmet he was wearing that day as the towers collapsed around them. Enter the SCOV Holiday Golf Cart Decorating Contest. Carts will gather in the parking lot by the mini-golf area and be judged at Noon, and then the parade will begin. Bike Safety Class A free bike safety class presented by the Vistoso Cyclists Club will be held Tuesday, November 5, 1-4 PM and Thursday, November 7, 8-11 AM, Welcome Center/Conference Room 1. The class includes learning how to perform a quick, easy bicycle safety check, fix a flat, and perform minor mechanical adjustments. It also includes review of state and local laws, on-bike skills and practice, interactive discussion and a student manual. Students will gain confidence knowing that they are riding legally and safely. Crash types and crash avoidance techniques will be discussed. Learn to Draw Have you always wanted to learn to draw? The juxtaposition of World War II and the American involvement in Vietnam provides a brilliant setting for Davis-Gardner’s examination of truth, honor, morality, love and pain. How To Be A Lawyer, by Jordan Davis, is a prose poem with two paragraphs instead of stanzas that begins with “My father taught me how to play the beer bottle.” The toddler child is told how to “blow air over the top” and advised he can change the tone by taking a sip of Schlitz, which he does, followed by more music and shared laughter. Raising one eyebrow partly answers the “how to” of the title. The language is fairly ordinary but rather droll and the reader is easily drawn into this vignette of a father having fun instructing his son. Davis says he wanted to show how “lightness can strengthen bonds” and he does this without relying on a strategically broken line or other familiar poetic devices. Writing an effective poem, even when all tools are on the table, can be a struggle but we help each other along, one poem at a time. The joint effort with the Quilters combines embroidered swirls and twirls and unique wool fabrics to produce an amazing quilt. With training and practice, extraordinary projects are possible. The computerized machine accepts internet-downloaded designs as well as Brother software. Show and Tell opens each meeting, ideas are shared and demonstrations given. When we meet in the sewing room on Tuesday afternoons to cut fabric scraps into small pieces for the pet beds, we have a great time doing something worthwhile but also socializing. If you are working on a novel or memoir, you are encouraged to bring a few pages to the meetings for review and encouragement.

Town of Oro Valley Community Policing

Oro Valley Town Council study session will focus on community policing. It will be held October 9, 6 PM, Oro Valley Town Council Chambers, 11000 N. La Cañada Drive. Oro Valley Police Chief Daniel G. Sharp will address the Town Council at an October 9 study session on the topic of community policing, including five key elements: service, accountability, problem solving, neighborhood focus and decentralization. These elements have been implemented in our own community with great success. The presentation will be held in Council Chambers at 6 PM, and is open to the public.

Fall Harvest Festival

Saturday, October 26, 9 AM–3 PM, Steam Pump Ranch, Oracle Rd. north of First Avenue. There’s something for everyone at this free, community event. Pusch Ridge Stables will provide horse-drawn hay wagon rides and pony rides. Other offerings include a petting zoo, Western music, Old West Show, horsemanship demos, dance presentations and corn roasting. A pumpkin patch, straw maze, food trucks, Native American Heritage Garden demonstrations, and a food preparation presentation by Ramona Farms from the Gila Indian Reservation will also be available. This event is hosted by the Town of Oro Valley, in partnership with the Oro Valley Historical Society and Heirloom Farmers Market. Catalina-Oro Valley Lions Club This summer, the Catalina-Oro Valley Lions prepared and delivered journals to the teachers of Coronado School to thank them for the wonderful work they do for our children. In September, the club worked at a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for Special Olympics, celebrated its Branch Marana Host Lions Club’s Charter Night and prepared to participate in this month’s Health Fair in Saddlebrook. This year, the club and its members will continue to support Coronado School, do vision screening, collect prescription glasses and hearing aids for recycling, attend to the charitable needs of Catalina and Oro Valley, Special Olympics and the Tucson School for the Deaf and Blind. Secure Access Update Your membership cards are now needed to gain access into Catalina Vista and Desert Oasis. When the AFC opens, the card access system will be in place from the beginning. Please carry your card with you. If you’d like it to be punched and receive a free lanyard, please come to the Administration Office. Do not punch your cards yourselves as there are only two safe zones on the card in which it may be punched. Punching in another area may result in the card being damaged.

Key Fobs If you would like a key fob for use with the secure access system, they are available at the Welcome Center Office for $10. It’s not a substitute for your card. The fob will provide you access to the Catalina Vista, Desert Oasis and Aquatic & Fitness Center. It will not work at the library.
