The Marketing Dimension at SCOV… by Steve Knapp ... is alive, active and contributing significantly to our community through the professionals on our Marketing Committee with support from dedicated Association staffers. The Marketing Committee Charter is to “continue to evolve SCOV as an active adult community by designing marketing strategies that target the next generation of SCOV home buyers and by marketing SCOV as a community rich in the amenities desired by active adults seeking a healthy, dynamic lifestyle, including a championship golf course. Promote our community to the Tucson area and beyond, for the express purpose of attracting new residents, new annual golf pass holders and enhancing property values.” In addition, the Committee was assigned two initiatives from the retired Image Committee: 1) Update and improve gateways and signage; 2) Update place names to create a more current, youthful image. It was also assigned responsibility for implementing the new brand name (name change to Sun City Oro Valley) and developing an Identity Manual for uniform graphic standards for consistent use in all SCOV communications. Accomplishments during the last year includes: announcing the name change to the Tucson community and beyond, interviewing and selecting external resources to build and install new community signage now being placed, defining the process for helping shape community positioning and the committee’s planning, naming of all buildings and rooms, and development of an Identity Manual to assure consistent look and appearance (in process). In addition, committee members have supported customer relations training and contributed to the marketing research effort that residents completed at the end of June. Committee members represent a wealth of management and specific marketing and communications experience, the Ambassador program, plus those with golf, restaurant and real estate expertise. Identity Theft

Recently it seems there are been more than the normal number of scams occurring. Although there hasn’t been much talk of identity theft in the community, I thought it might be helpful to pass on steps you should take in case you find yourself with a missing wallet or indications that your identity may be at risk. The Federal Trade Commission suggests you: • File a report with police immediately. This provides needed proof of the crime for your bank, credit card company and insurance company. • Cancel each credit card. Ask for new cards and new account numbers. Then, call the major credit report ing agencies to report missing cards and place a fraud alert on your accounts. Equifax: 800-525 6285, Experian: 888-397-3742, TransUnion: 800 680-7289. Ask for credit reports, too, to search for any discrepancies. • Call your utility companies. Inform them someone may try to receive new service with your identification. • Contact the Social Security Administration at 800 772-1213. • Report the loss to your bank. Cancel checking and savings accounts. Open new ones, and stop pay ments on outstanding checks. Ask for a new ATM card, account number and PIN or password. • Call the motor vehicle department. Report your miss ing driver’s license. Get a new number that’s not your social security number. • Change the locks. If keys to your car or home were taken, you don’t want to give an identity thief access to more personal property and information. • Contact your insurance companies. Prevent an iden tity thief from adding himself or herself to your poli cies. Once you take these steps, pay close attention to your accounts. Be your own fraud investigator by taking notes of everyone you speak to, the date and time of the call and what you talked about. Continued on next page

GM article continued It’s always important to be wary of thieves. Try not to stuff your purse or wallet with all your things: from your checkbook, pay stubs and credit cards to ATM cards, driver’s license and health insurance cards. It can take years to recover from identity theft because thieves can hold onto your information and trade it with others. Order your free credit report annually to watch for suspicious charges or accounts. “One should eat to live, not live to eat.” Benjamin Franklin. A balanced food plan that emphasizes fresh vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, low-fat dairy, nuts and seeds, and a minimal amount of healthy oils provides high nutrient density and no empty calories. This is referred to as the modified Mediterranean diet. Enjoying lots of fresh veggies, fruits, lean meats, fresh fish (when in season) and whole grains will help you feel your best and live life to its fullest. Vary your diet to keep it interesting, fun and good tasting. Prepare vegetarian meals or experiment with different spices for your food. Use different cooking methods, e.g. roasted or grilled vegetables, kabobs or poaching your fish. Get a smoothie mixer, e.g. the Blendtec or Vitamix to make delicious blends of fresh fruits and vegetables to start your day. As our committee makes its various inspection visits to residences, we see an item that is not often mentioned or

4

is paid much attention. That item is the front porch/garage light fixture. Some have been replaced, but many times we still see the original “brass and glass” fixture installed by Del Webb. Almost always these are badly tarnished, dirty and often crooked. Please inspect your lights and clean and or replace if needed. Home Depot, Lowes, Ace and other stores sell many different styles and colors that integrate well with our colors and architecture at very reasonable prices. Communication

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room. Please help us by recycling your aluminum cans, but place your trash in your own trash containers. In the last trip to the scrap yard for the 2012-2013 fiscal year: we delivered 380 pounds of cans and received $239.40. This brings our final fiscal year totals to 5,020 pounds collected. That is 2½ tons of aluminum cans, and a total of $3,100.80 received for the benefit of the CAC. The Loan Room is a useful addition to other services available in SCOV. It remains open throughout the year every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8-9 AM and is located at the end of the Cart Barn. Items available for loan are medical, table and chairs, rollaway beds, and children’s items. Please come visit us to reserve or pick up items you need. We look forward to helping you. The monsoon rains did arrive, and with that, so did new growth of foliage, including many weeds. Keep an eye out for Desert Broom and Spurge, and catch them early. Look at the cracks in your sidewalk, driveway, and where the cement meets the asphalt, as that is where Spurge is many times found. Please make every effort to stay ahead of the weed situation in your yard. With the summer rains, new growth on trees and shrubs also occurred. Trees must be kept trimmed more than seven feet above sidewalks, may not overhang any street by more than two feet, and should not block stop signs. Shrubs should not extend out over pedestrian walkways. Most bean pods are down now and should be removed from the ground in your yards. Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, September 2013

Here’s is a list of things SCOV residents can do to help maintain the safety of this community: • Join the Posse and regularly participate in patrols. • Keep newspapers, phone books, advertisements, etc., from accumulating on your and your absent neighbor’s driveway and entryway. • Keep garage doors closed, day and night. • Make sure all doors and windows are locked when you are away and before retiring for the night. • Close windows and lock the doors on vehicles left outside, and place valuables and garage door openers out of sight. • Don’t let strangers talk their way into your home. Ensure solicitors can present the proper credentials issued by the Town of Oro Valley. • If you use a computer, learn how to protect yourself from computer viruses and other malicious activities. • If you see something that doesn’t seem right, don’t hesitate to call 911 no matter how trivial you think it may be. 2013 SCOV Survey Update

In December 2012 Director Knapp made the motion and the Board approved to, “develop a membership survey to be mailed with the annual dues statement in May 2013. The purpose of the survey is to inform near and long range planning and to improve communications and understanding of current owners’ varied interests.” A special task force of the Strategic Projects Committee was assigned this responsibility, headed by Jim Williams with input from other SCOV residents with expertise in developing surveys, and to develop the questions for this survey. The task force met with various committee chairs and club presidents to determine present and future wants and needs. They also reviewed past SCOV community surveys. The privacy of the use of data was and is important to those involved with the survey. The last major survey of SCOV was in 2008. The 2008 survey resulted in 1903 responses from the owners. It served as the basis for the important 2009 Long Range Plan which resulted in 31+ initiatives, most of which were adopted and have been implemented. Some initiatives, like the new signage, are being completed this summer. This cycle has taken six years to complete. The survey of 2013 was a longer, in-depth survey intended to take the pulse of our community. There were 1998 surveys returned, 95 more than the 2008 survey. There were 19 questions asked. In those 19 questions there were a total of 268 options from which to select. Question 16 alone had 43 options (this was the question with the list about use and satisfaction of activities in SCOV). It was the responsibility of the Association to tabulate these responses. A team of residents took on the job. Dave Smoler developed the spreadsheet. Ann Fall, Diane Smith, Norma Meyers and Kat Peabody organized and numbered the surveys. Nancy Njaa, Kay Sheetz, Janice Strassburg and Mary Ayers tackled the daunting task of entering the responses to all 37,962 questions into the spreadsheet. At first there was a sense of being overwhelmed, but as these individuals began to work their way through the surveys they became more confident and proficient at the task. I am very appreciative of their outstanding, thorough work. If you have the opportunity, please thank them as well. The survey results have been sent to a professional in the field of survey analysis from the University of Arizona Office of Institutional Research and Planning Support to develop frequency tables and identify significant differences in types of respondents from various groups and any tests of statistical significance that she observes. The results of her report will be received before September 15 and will be made available to residents. It is anticipated that this survey will be the launching point for a new Long Range Plan and hopefully the development of a standard survey to be conducted on an ongoing, regular basis (every two-three years or so) so that we will be able to observe trends. Additional surveys may be taken to amplify topics or gain information Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, September 2013

on a specific topic. These surveys have been and will continue to be a useful tool in maintaining and enhancing our community. Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius

AFC Pool and Mini Gym

Thank you to everyone who has called, emailed or just stopped by to say how great the mini gym is. Some even say it has made them really look forward to the new gym area. The new gym will have new views and equipment. For those of you who use our gym on a regular basis, you know what I mean when I say it will bring a wonderful change to your workout. The AFC pool, as of this writing, has been able to cool off residents for most of the summer. There has been no monitor on duty, but the emergency phone is installed and the address of the pool is next to the phone. Management has always tried to work around projects to maintain some use for residents. We all made it through the Café and Artisan Center remodels, and I’m sure we will make it through this project. Thanks to all who have been cooperating during our construction. Community Services - Jim Cundiff

Café News It’s monsoon season. Come into the Café to relax and enjoy a cup of our homemade soup with half a sandwich. There are many fantastic changes being made at the Café right now. Last month, Shamrock Foods conducted server training. We hope this will result in a more efficient and enjoyable atmosphere. There will be new creative menu items out this month and we would love for you to come try them out. For example, we will be having a traditional style Huevos Rancheros served with a creamy Ranchero sauce with refried beans, and Fettucini Alfredo with steamed broccoli. Please give us your input. The Café will be offering calorie counts for menu items in the future. The Café is offering you a chance to receive a free breakfast or lunch if you turn in a comment card. Monthly comment cards are randomly drawn for the free meal. The July winners: Sonya Utseth, Martin Kodlick, Wayne Miller and Fred Krohn. Congratulations and bon appétit.

Exercise for Your Independence

You know staying physically active can help keep your body young even though the calendar says you’re getting older. A new study from the University of Pittsburgh suggests that the more you move, the longer you’ll be able to live independently. The study found that those who were sedentary over the study period were 1½ times more likely to have a hard time with daily activities. Think of your workouts as a way of ensuring your independence.

Golf

Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs September is the start of our overseeding on the golf course. The course will be closed from Saturday, September 21–Thursday, October 10. The course will reopen on Friday, October 11, and will be cart path only through Friday, October 25. During overseeding, the Pro Shop will have limited hours of operation. During the week we will be closed, and on Friday-Sunday, we will be open from 9 AM–2 PM. This would be an excellent time to get your shoes respiked, buy shaft labels to put on your clubs or get your clubs regripped. Walkers may still use the cart paths for their morning or evening exercise, however please do not walk on the golf course. When we re-open on Friday, October 11, tee times will begin at 7:30 AM and shotgun starts at 8 AM. All walkers and riders must be off the course by 7 AM please. Thank you for your cooperation. We will once again support the Patriot Golf Day. This is a very worthy cause as the monies collected go to The Folds of Honor. This Foundation provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation. We ask anyone wishing to donate, to come to the Pro Shop and drop some money in our canister.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf September marks the end of the summer in regards to golf course maintenance in Southern Arizona. Starting in the spring, all the attention focused on growing and establishing Bermuda grass while eliminating winter rye grass. That thought process changes in the month of September. The Bermuda grass is slowed down and slowly prepared for overseeding for a return of the winter rye grass. The Bermuda grass growth is slowed down with growth regulators, a reduction of fertilization, and cultural practices like verticutting. This process slowly reduces the thickness of the Bermuda canopy to allow for better infiltration of rye grass seed. All the work performed during the summer not only provides a great playing surface, but also provides a good seed bed during overseeding. When the canopy is too thick the rye seeds gets stuck too high from the soil surface and can’t get roots established. This results in a thin canopy that doesn’t look good when the Bermuda turns brown in the winter. Areas in the fairways that didn’t recover during the summer are also difficult to establish rye grass seed because the seed will dry out quickly and die from being exposed. This year the front nine is going to have some areas around the green edges overseeded. Hopefully, this will provide better playing surfaces during January and February when the dormant Bermuda is trampled down. The negative to overseeding these areas is that they will be thin next summer so they will need to be fixed just like the fairways are every June. Golf Advisory

Please note that our September meeting date has been changed to Monday, September 9, as the Catalina Vista Center will be closed on Labor Day. At the September meeting we will discuss The Favored Daughter – One Woman’s Fight to Lead Afghanistan Into the Future by Fawzi Koofi. Left to die at birth because she was female and again when the family was running for their lives, Fawzia had a heroic mother who would not give up easily. From one of the most unique, remote and beautiful parts of Afghanistan, Fawzi describes the oppression of women, the refusal to educate girls and a myriad of other abuses.

Great Books Pres. Barbara Gates 825-7645 VP Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762 October-May, First and Third Wednesdays, 2 PM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Lemmon

Next month we’ll resume our twice-monthly meetings by discussing the first two selections in Great Conversations 6, available from The Great Books Foundation, 800-222-5870 or www.greatbooks.org. October 2 we’ll probe On Tranquility of Mind by Roman philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca. Though banished for alleged adulterous behavior, Seneca is famous for expounding on Stoicism which stressed the importance of moral virtues. Perhaps he recanted his earlier ways or was wrongly accused for he was later recalled and became tutor to Nero who apparently failed to adhere to his teacher’s teachings. Nevertheless, we can certainly learn from his lessons on how to achieve mental serenity. October 16 we’ll turn to aphorisms from Francis Bacon’s The New Organon in which he attempts to establish a new approach to examining the natural world by means of direct observation, carefully constructed experiments and the use of instruments. Pilates

Mary Ayers 638-7916 mary.pilates@gmx.com Mondays, 3 PM, Thursdays, 1:30 PM, Dance Studio

Everyone is always asking “Is Pilates good exercise for seniors?” The answer is definitely yes, and group classes with our certified Pilates instructors are the best way for us to practice the exercises. We always start out our classes with warm-up exercises and deep breathing. The more strenuous exercises are modified for those of us with limitations. All in all, the benefits of Pilates can’t be beat. They include increased core strength (abdomen and back muscles), balance, flexibility, muscle tone, stamina and well being. The founder of Pilates, Joseph Pilates, practiced his methods well into his eighties. Please come and give our classes a try, or for your first time, just come by and watch. If you participate, the cost is only $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please feel free to call Mary at 638-7916 if you would like more details. Pinochle

Elise Asch 818-1345 Mondays, 9:30-11:30 AM, Desert Oasis/Saguaro

Many of us can empathize with feelings of loneliness but poets manage to find unique and very personal means of expressing such emotions. Stuart Dischel’s “Proclamation” adds a new perspective to this universal theme by showing us how others might view the problem as a possible solution. “The governor will give/Homeless people sleeping bags,/Let them stay the night/ On windswept porticos/Outside his buildings/Instead of your doorstep./I am talking to myself/With empty rooms/I cannot bear to live in.” This poem uses plain language to express vivid images, deep feeling and a concern for others as well as the self. As poets, we often manage to open locked doors and reveal the contents of our own forbidden rooms. Sharing our poems, we share ourselves, finding not only release, but relief. This is a group that offers hugs along with critiques. Join us. Poker
