From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Emergency Preparedness and our Community by Cathy Hartrich Be Prepared. That was our motto when I was a Girl Scout way back when. But it has served me well over my lifetime and continues to be a cornerstone of a strong foundation. It’s very much like the definition of LUCK... when preparation meets opportunity. Our 19 brave Hot Shots were definitely prepared, but Mother Nature or unforeseen situations can change the tides in a flash. Accidents are just that: when the unexpected or unintentional happens. We’ve had several of those nasty accidents lately right here in our community. SCOV is often described as a friendly, caring and compassionate community. There are so many examples of this, none less than our Support Groups, Posse, Vistoso Helpful Hands and our Thank You section of the Tipster which so often expresses the outpouring of neighbors and friends who have assisted others in need. Watching out for one another is what makes us a community as opposed to just a lot of houses grouped together. Unfortunately for some of our residents, recent slip and fall accidents have left them helpless. Living alone can have its challenges, but there are things that we can do to prepare for or avoid an accident. The EPC (Emergency Preparedness Committee) will continue to make plans for that unexpected event that could happen in our community, and each resident must also create a plan for his/her own safety. There are a number of different options offered to secure a daily check-in to verify that a person living alone is well and ready to start his/her day. For example, there are inexpensive auto-alert programs that can call for help in the event of a fall or medical emergency. As we age, wellness and safety will insure that we live our lives with independence, purpose and intention. In an emergency or disaster we can and will pull together to help each other but we must be prepared for potential disasters and know the needs, limitations, and chal-

Summertime in SCOV
It’s that time of the year. Although we all know it will be hot, I’m not sure we’re ever totally prepared for mostly triple digit temperatures. Of course, that’s one reason that close to half of our residents depart for cooler parts of the country. With those departures, one would think the workload may diminish a bit; however, as they say the days go by quickly when you’re busy, and we’re busy. Every year at the beginning of summer, the annual dues and many of the golf fees are paid which consumes considerable time in the front office and the accounting office. This year we also have the special assessment that has taken extra time to process and time to answer various questions, for example, about the payment plan. As usual, several projects are in process. The major project that we’re all familiar with is the Fitness Center. You might think that this job would simply be delegated to the contractor but there are numerous coordination duties left to staff in regard to the Town of Oro Valley and various vendors. In addition to this major project, new exterior and interior signage is being installed. Along with the signs, landscaping will be updated around the large entry signs to the community and buildings. New landscaping installation along the Rancho Vistoso Blvd. median is also taking place. Then there’s a Café improvement plan in progress that includes updating the décor. Another larger-than-expected project is the resident survey. Last but not least, the card access systems have been installed and the pilot project that has been mentions on a number of occasions should be in place at Catalina Vista. In addition to the annual accounting tasks that take place this time of year and the projects outlined above, the regular facility maintenance, common area landscaping and golf course maintenance are already underway. Some of this work, especially golf course maintenance that includes dealing with turf transition and then over-seeding after the grass finally revives, is more time-consuming in summer than during other parts of the year.

Good news! The Active Health Committee has donated and recommends new books now available in the SCOV Library. True Food: Seasonal, Sustainable, Simple, Pure by Dr. Andrew Weil has 125 recipes and commentary on foods that are satisfying, wholesome and nourish the body, mind and spirit. He has opened a number of restaurants, called True Food Kitchens, using these recipes. Mayo Clinic’s Book of Alternative Medicine provides up-to-date information on how therapies such as supplements, vitamins, hypnosis and acupuncture help you stay healthy. Doctors answer questions about when it’s appropriate to use complementary and alternative medicine and suggest simple products and practices that can be worked into your daily routine. Many other good books are obtainable; some are disease specific, while others promote living well, exercise, nutrition and healthy aging. Don’t forget the monthly issues of Consumer Reports on Health and the newsletters available on the magazine shelf at the library lobby. Architectural Review

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room. Please help us by recycling your aluminum cans, but place your trash in your own trash containers. CAC volunteers delivered their ninth can load for the year to the recycling center. The 500 pounds delivered netted $315, bringing the year-to-date poundage to 4,640 pounds and the revenue to $2,861.40. Summer has arrived, and the Loan Room is quieter than through the winter. It is the perfect time for those residents still around to visit us and see what equipment we have available to loan. The Loan Room remains open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM throughout the summer months; reservations and pick up are at the end of the Cart Barn. We look forward to seeing you. Consumer Referral

Some of you may have noticed utility boxes in yards being painted the Weathered Brown color this summer. The project, begun a few years ago, is being continued this summer and fall at no cost to the individual homeowner. If you have boxes in your yard surrounded by shrubs, they should be cleared away somewhat, to make it easy for the painter or the utility company to gain access to the box if necessary. The rains came, along with the wind, and we thank those in our community who kept a watchful eye out for their neighbors and reported any damage to Administration. With so many of our neighbors away at this time of the year, we need to be especially aware of our surroundings. Please keep an eye out for those pesky weeds which seem to appear overnight with the monsoon season and remove them from your yard as soon as possible. Thank you for continuing to take pride in your property and our community even in our extremely hot summer months. Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, August 2013

Using Digital Files
A little over a year ago we began a project to reduce paper usage in our office, particularly in the area of Community Services. This area handles the resale of homes, covenant compliance, etc. Each unit and lot had a file with information like the tract plat, deeds, paint colors, covenant compliance letters, etc. The files took up an entire wall of an office. Meanwhile the digital age arrived, and we have been using Homeowner’s Association software that manages resales, covenant compliance and dues payments on computer. Our project to reduce paper consisted of reviewing all those files, scanning them to a pdf format and attaching them to each unit and lot in the homeowner software. The scanning was finished about a year ago. We gave ourselves a year to use the new system (accessing the digital file rather than the paper file), and it has worked well. We are packing up the files and moving them out of the office into storage. Next year at this time, we will shred the files and have a completely paperless system. Along the same lines, at the June Board meeting, Director Olson asked the question about using digital files for some of the Board packets. They can be quite large at times ( May’s Study Session had 97 pages x seven directors, three staff, one corporate and one library copy – that’s 1164 copies). We are looking into using a pdf file of the packet similar to how the minutes are posted on our website. We would print out pages that we need (like the agenda), but refer to the digital copy for most all of the Board work. Not everyone will be comfortable with this change or will make the change, but many are willing to give it a try. These two steps have been a learning experience and are positive steps to being good stewards of our resources. Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius
Two ways to save a life
I was recently informed of a resident who had fallen in his home and he lay on the floor for two days. The neighbors noticed two days of newspaper on his porch, so they tried to call him. The police were called, entered the home and got him to the hospital. I strongly advise if you have a cell phone to keep it on you at all times, even in your home, especially if you live alone. This allows you to call for help if needed. The second way to save a life is take our AED class. We now have new very easy to operate machines that have screens telling you exactly what to do. Lonnie teaches the class the last Wednesday of each month starting in October. If you were in distress, I am sure you would want someone to help you.
Utility Box Painting Continues

Community Services - Jim Cundiff
Office open 10 AM-Noon, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center 917-8058 jcundiff@suncityorovalley.com Resolving Neighbor Conflicts
Introduce yourself. Most conflicts between neighbors begin because one or both households never took the time to introduce themselves when moving in. Even if you moved in years ago, it’s never too late to meet your neighbors. A friendly exchange can go a long way to preventing future disputes. Listen to what your neighbors have to say and demonstrate that you are genuinely listening. Give them plenty of time to talk, and your conflict will be resolved more quickly. Take an appropriate level of responsibility. Accountability is crucial to resolving neighbor disputes. If you are solely responsible for a problem, you are solely responsible for fixing it. If several neighbors are responsible, discuss equal division of labor and continue the conversation until everyone is clear on expectations and happy with the resolution. Compromise. With SCOV homes built in close proximity to one another, the word “compromise” is more significant in neighborhood vocabulary. Don’t be so stubborn about a dispute that you can’t see the advantage in finding the middle ground. Remember, a compromise means you walk away with at least half of what you were fighting for. Break down the problem, not the neighbor. Many arguments get so heated that people forget about the initial dispute and begin attacking the person. If you go at solving the problem with the same stubborn relentlessness that you’re using to perpetuate conflict with your neighbor, you’ll have your issue resolved in no time. Café News The Café is offering you a chance to receive a free breakfast or lunch if you turn in a comment card. Random comment cards are drawn monthly. The June winners: Beverly Goode, Eloise Bergtholdt, Judy Lynch, Fred Korn and Norma Cooper. Congratulations and bon appétit. Friends of the SCOV Library Attention readers and video viewers: membership in the Friends of the Library expired June 30. Please take the time to renew your membership. New members are especially welcome because the Library depends on the funds from the Friends of the Library to purchase books and videos. Just stop by the Library and ask a volunteer for a membership form. It is money well spent at $10 for an individual and $15 for a family membership.

If flipping through a magazine keeps you motivated, by all means do it. But reading while exercising is so distracting that you’re probably working at an intensity level too low to burn a significant number of calories. Magazines and books are just the tip of the iceberg. One in 10 of us reads, texts or emails on a cell phone during workouts, reports a new survey by Standard Life, a health insurance company. Instead, turn on some tunes to increase the duration and intensity of your cardio session. Researchers have discovered that runners who listened to motivational rock or pop music (think Chuck Berry or Benny Goodman) exercised up to 15 percent longer and felt better doing it. You don’t have to nix TV shows, cell phones, books and magazines during every workout; just leave them behind a couple of times a week so you can focus on intensity.

Golf Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs As some things are slowing down due to the hot weather, the Pro Shop staff is gearing up behind the scenes for another great season. I will be ordering new range balls and scorecards. We will also be changing out the shoe brushes around the Pro Shop. Also, a few comments on the chipping area which is run down and need s new fencing. We are waiting on a pass holder to get in touch with us about donating the materials, so we can get it cleaned up. Please stop by our fully-stocked Pro Shop to check out our closeout specials and to visit with our friendly staff. Our current golf rate cards can also be picked up in the Pro Shop. We recently purchased 34 new golf carts from Club Car and installed a new ball machine. If you currently have a range key, please return it to the Pro Shop at your convenience. If you are an annual pass holder, we will replace your key with a card that will work in the new machine. Please remember that monsoon season is upon us and rain brings lightning. Whenever you see lightning, please get indoors as quickly as possible. Lightning is nothing to fool around with (just ask Lee Trevino). Also, drink plenty of fluids and keep your body hydrated. Carrying a wet towel is also a great idea with the triple digit temperatures we are experiencing. Superintendent - Michael Kropf August is a happy time for golf course maintenance because the brutal hot, dry temperatures of May and June are over. August is generally miserable for most people because the monsoons bring a dramatic increase in humidity which people find uncomfortable. However, this increase in humidity is fantastic for growing Bermuda grass. All the work performed between May and June to sod, sprig and aerify the fairways, greens and tees prepares the grass to recover very quickly. The poor playing conditions during all the re-grassing will be healed and the golf course will be back to being in great shape all the way until the end of September when overseed begins. This year the transition was much improved over the previous years. The changes to overseeding seed rates, rotating non-overseed holes each year, increasing the frequency of aerification throughout the entire year, and increased levels of hand watering dry areas during late spring have all contributed to the fight against salts and dying Bermuda grass. Even areas that were weak this year had more underlying Bermuda grass than previous years, so the amount of sprigging and sodding was reduced. Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, August 2013
The goal is to improve the conditions every May and June and reduce the amount of re-grassing required before the humidity of August. Next March the greens are going to be aerified not only to improve transition, but to keep the greens from getting so hard during April and May. The fairways and approaches will also be aerified to improve transition in May. Golf Advisory
Chair Howard Schulz 825-0797 First Wednesday, 2 PM, Welcome Center/Conference 3
The newly-appointed golf advisory members are: Vice Chairperson, Sue Pearsey; 18 Hole Men’s, Gary Graber; 18 Hole Women’s, Peg Bushong; 9 Hole Men’s, Garry Larsen; 9 Hole Women’s, Janet Kimble. John Olson is Board Liaison and Betty Ingram is Member-at -Large, along with staff Bob Mariani, Kim Griggs and Mike Kropf. Be on the look-out for new forward tees on six holes. Give them a try and tell us what you think. The heat has been difficult during the transition from rye to Bermuda grasses. The maintenance crew has done a great job, and the course should come out in good shape. We should all try to make our course better by minimizing cart traffic on the grass near cart paths and traveling in and out of the fairways, by raking bunkers and repairing divots on the greens and by using our sand bottles. Thanks. The Views 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club

The doldrums of summer are upon us with only a handful of members showing up on Wednesday mornings, as of late. Hopefully, more guys will pop up as the weeks continue. The monsoons are upon us, providing much needed water for the course and a bit of a cooling effect for those of us braving the heat. We’ve welcomed some new players recently, but continuing to increase our numbers should be a priority. If you know of anybody expressing an interest in playing golf and forming new friendships, by all means encourage them to join us. Gary Graber may be contacted. Remember to drink lots of water and keep cool.

At the August meeting we will discuss Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey which displays a marvelous, almost tactile love and passion for the Desert Southwest. Over and over Abbey summons up specific places, particular mountains, individual landscapes. It is a genuine and enduring classic about the American Desert and environmentalism. At the September meeting we will discuss The Favored Daughter – One Woman’s Fight to Lead Afghanistan Into the Future by Fawzi Koofi. Left to die at birth because she was female and again when the family is running for their lives, Fawzia had a heroic mother who would not give up so easily. From one of the most unique, remote, and beautiful parts of Afghanistan, Fawzi describes the oppression of women, the refusal to educate girls and a myriad of other abuses.

On Tranquility of Mind, by Roman writer, philosopher and politician Seneca, contains some advice that remains timely despite the reference to conveyance by carriage rather than by car: “…we ought to take walks out-of-doors in order that the mind may be strengthened and refreshed by the open air and much breathing; sometimes it will get new vigor from a journey by carriage and a change of place and festive company and generous drinking.” Perhaps it would be best to omit the over-imbibing, but current studies certainly tend to agree with Seneca’s other recommendations. The combination of physical, mental and social activity is frequently touted as an effective prescription for maintaining wellness as we gain in years. Leader, Diana Magness, magnessdd@gmail.com Co-Leader Zona Boss 638-6644 Wednesdays, 1:30-3 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge The purpose of this new club is to provide a community drum circle for any woman wanting to connect with others through hand drumming, using African Djembe drums, hand-held Native American frame drums and other small percussion instruments. For thousands of years, people worldwide have used group drumming to energize minds and bodies, strengthen community bonds, release stress and to celebrate life. Recent clinical studies have also conclusively documented some of the many physical, mental and emotional benefits of purpose-driven drumming. All women are welcome regardless of experience. Elise Asch 818-1345 Mondays, 9:30-11:30 AM, Desert Oasis/Saguaro
Poet Michael Ryan conveys an up-to-date warning within the old-fashioned framework of a villanelle. The form consists of three line stanzas with the same aba rhyme scheme. The first and third lines also appear repeatedly in different positions emphasizing their importance. Self Help opens with a rather colloquial question that sets the tone: “What kind of delusion are you under?/The life he hid just knocked you flat./You see the lightning but not the thunder.” The third line is more inventive and very effective. The following lines contain clues about the delusion: “His online persona simply stunned her/as it did you when you started to chat”. Using current themes and the everyday language of today can give a villanelle or even a Shakespearean sonnet a fresh, new sound. The Poets Corner encourages members to experiment with classical forms as well as the most avant garde. All resident poets are welcome. Poker

Local gyms could possibly furnish aquatic facilities for you. Please use your ingenuity to find a pool to train in. We still need new swimmers, 50 years plus, women and men. Please call Gordon Gillin to sign up or to ask questions. Our roster is free for fitness and fun. Those swimmers on the mileage chart should continue to submit their mileage to Ken and Sue Martin, 825-4430. The Martins have your cards at their home should you need them. Pres. Jean James 648-1118 Sec. Jackie Brown 825-2487 Kanikapila, Tuesdays, 10 AM-Noon, Desert Oasis/Ocotillo www.scovaz.com/clubs/ukulele/ Many of us in the club feel that the two hours we spend together on Tuesday mornings is the most fun we have all week. And there are always new things to learn. It seems the ukulele is much more versatile and complex than most people would assume at first glance and the popularity of the “mighty uke” as it’s been called, is at an all time high world-wide. Little wonder that it’s so popular since it is indeed a “little wonder.” We will be performing Saturday, August 3, 6:30 PM at Catalina State Park. Come out and enjoy the music. We always appreciate your support. We won’t be signing up new members until the fall, but you can come to one of our Tuesday meetings and see what we do.
