From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the Sun City Oro Valley Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Reflections and Visions by Jan Fischer It has been said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. My single step was to become a candidate for the SCOV (Sun City Oro Valley) Board of Directors, of which I am now a proud member. Looking back, the excitement of opportunity and the fear of failure for a new board member is scary. And now, as I enter into this final season of my term, I know that even though the winter has come quickly, I realize that when its over, it is over. I am looking forward to the New Year even as I realize that I am in the winter of my term as a SCOV board member. Board members make many decisions, some good, some bad. The good I supported with my whole heart, the bad I just did not agree with. During the past two years I have met many of you and made many new friends. I have learned much about our community and how talented you are; many of the ideas and experiences from you provided me some important lessons that will stay with me long after my term on the Board is over. As I look around the community during this winter of my Board term, I wonder what I can offer to my community. I will volunteer when I can and encourage you to join me. We can work together to inform our residents and continue to live the lifestyle we have chosen. The candidate forums are scheduled and soon you will receive ballots to elect a new Board. This is one of the most important functions in this community. The new Board will make many decisions – some you will like, others you will not. The decisions will be based on the life experiences of the Board members, and we residents need to support them. I plan on working with those who are elected and trust that their decisions will enhance our community and make us proud to live in Sun City Oro Valley.

General Manager - Bob Mariani
Volunteer For A Committee
Every year about this time a very important process begins. That process is seeking new members for the many Association committees. As I did last year, I am once again asking the very talented pool of SCOV (Sun City Oro Valley) residents to please consider serving on one or more of your very valuable and productive committees. If you haven’t served on a committee or even if you have, it might be difficult for you to realize how much the committee structure means to SCOV. The Board and staff work hard and perform many tasks to help keep the community operating as well as possible. However, the investigations, evaluations and projects that the committees undertake equate to a significant portion of the Association’s work. Simply put, without the committees there would be a need for a much larger staff (more expense to the homeowners), or the community would not be able to accomplish the volume of work that is presently undertaken. So, please consider being part of the solution and volunteering for one or more of our vital committees. In addition to ad hoc committees that the Board may appoint from time to time, the committees you are urged to consider joining are: Ambassadors, Active Health, Architectural Control, Communications, Community Assistance, Community Directory, Consumer Referral, Election, Emergency Preparedness, Finance/Budget, Food and Beverage (Café), Gift Shop, Golf Advisory, Government Affairs, Marketing, Neighborhood Pride, Nominating, Posse, Properties, Strategic Projects and Tipster Editorial. Now is your opportunity to get involved in shaping the future of your community. We urge members to complete and return the committee application form that will be found in the March Tipster or go to the Association website at www.suncityorovalley.com to complete the form. Depending on the number of responses, we may not be able to place each interested resident on a committee. Our goal, however, is to build a database of interested volunteers who can step into a committee assignment not only now but also in the future.

Board Candidates Answer Questions What is your personal vision for the future of SCOV? SCOV is the active adult community of choice in Arizona. It is well-maintained, attractive and inviting: a community of diverse interests and backgrounds, with facilities, amenities and clubs to satisfy all. We value communication and seek consensus. We enjoy a sound financial footing and strive to keep our expenses Don Coleman as low as possible so that SCOV remains affordable for all residents. We are not static; we plan for and make improvements that are necessary to keep pace with the marketplace. Why do you want to serve as a Board member and what do you feel you will specifically contribute to the Board if elected? I want to ensure that SCOV is always as appealing to current residents and prospective buyers as it was when I moved here and remains today. I have over 40 years of executive experience at the corporate level. Managing over 5,000 employees has given me the ability to interact effectively and sensitively with SCOV residents and staff; to gather and accurately assess information, a predisposition for foresight and planning and strong financial management skills which will contribute to fiscal responsibility and efficiency at SCOV. My years of software development and related technological experience would greatly benefit SCOV efforts to improve our communications systems and streamline financial management. What three goals would you like to help the Board achieve during your term? 1. To maintain the high standards and quality of life we now enjoy while keeping a sharp eye on the affordability of our decisions. 2. To value full and open communication, always seeking consensus. 3. To further improve our property values and members’ enjoyment of SCOV through awareness of the active adult marketplace and future residents’ needs when planning for the future.
What is your personal vision for the future of SCOV? Healthy adult community. An active adult community where all members are engaged to the extent of their personal comfort level, where residents respect one another, embrace and recognize the diversity of our culture. Why do you want to serve as a Board member? Give back to our community. Bert Gustafson Board service requires a large time commitment, as well as energy, and a high level of interest. I am ready to use my experience, energy and interest to continue the excellent tradition of board service to our community. What do you feel you will specifically contribute to the Board if elected? Achieve consensus on all issues. I have advised boards and city councils as an attorney, and have been a member of governing boards such as a public utility, YMCA, and a city council. I believe my experience will help in the governance of SCOV through collaboration, thoughtful deliberation and patient determination of our best interests. What three goals would you like to help the board achieve during your term? Maintain and improve our quality of life by: 1. Support and encourage programing in all activity areas. 2. Maintain affordability through modest dues increases. 3. Provide for continued financial stability.

You will be voting for the Board of Directors.

Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011
There are two positions for a three-year term. You may cast two votes. Also starting in February and continuing through March the Election Committee will be validating ballots. The ballot validation process is as follows: • Homeowners receive their ballots, a white BALLOT enve lope and a blue envelope. Residents mark their ballots, seal them in the white BALLOT envelope and then seal that enve lope in the blue envelope on the out side of which they record their name and unit/lot. The blue envelope is then mailed or placed in the locked ballot box.

About SCOV ( Sun City Oro Valley ) What is your personal vision for the future of SCOV? SCOV continues to be one of the finest active adult communities in southern Arizona and remains a friendly, vibrant, well-maintained, well-managed community with ever-increasing levels of homeowner involvement. Our facilities will be creatively enhanced as required. A well-informed, fiscally responsible Board that bases Susan Jakosa all decisions on the best interests of the homeowners, continues to oversee the management and resources of the community. Why do you want to serve as a Board member and what do you feel you will specifically contribute to the Board if elected? My belief is that it is important for homeowners to be actively involved in the community, socially and/or by participating in its governance. Serving as a Board member requires being a good steward for our community’s many resources, ensuring that the HOA thrives and continues to move forward. Besides bringing different ideas, experiences and points of view to the Board, I believe I have skills and qualities which enable me to be a meaningful contributor to the decision making process. And for me, that process necessitates having all sides of an issue presented, processing all relevant facts collected, voicing opinions, listening to others and finally, voting for the best possible option for SCOV as a whole. What three goals would you like to help the Board achieve during your term? As an individual, there are no specific new goals that I would submit to the Board at this time. But, there are numerous highpriority issues that previous Boards have handled, future Boards will continue to follow and may, when possible, develop even better solutions. Some of these include: 1. To maintain and continue strengthening our current fiscal position. 2. To ensure that, in a competitive environment, we always remain an attractive community moving forward. Along with our lifestyle and amenities, this creates and supports the value of our homes and our community in its entirety. 3. To engage the entire membership in community activities by enhancing both the scope of activities and our means of communication. We need to always be seeking new avenues for even more effective two-way communication between members, clubs, committees and the Board.
What is your personal vision for the future of SCOV? Our community has withstood the continued pressures of social and physical changes. We must find ways to continue replacing those who have left us with people who become our residents and continue to present to these residents the challenges to keep us vibrant, attractive and Jack Saatkamp interesting. Why so you want to serve as a Board member, and what do you feel you will specifically contribute to the Board if elected? As an 18 year resident SCOV is my only home. My professional background lends itself to staying aware of problems and ways to resolve these problems into opportunities with attention to detail regarding the interests of our residents. The details involve monetary expenditures as well as physical renewable attributes to our community. If elected to the Board I will bring 40 years of managerial experience in dealing with customers and potential customers and resolving problems regarding prices, service and products. I will use this experience to become aware of residents’ concerns and work in ways to find solutions. What three goals would you like to help the Board achieve during your term? 1.Continued beautification of the common properties. 2.Constantly finding ways to reduce water and power usage. 3.Continued studies of ways to increase revenue at the golf course and the Café.
• On the ballot validation dates, posted on the bulletin boards, the Election Committee checks the unit/lot and name against the membership list of eligible voters. A check is placed beside the eligible voters name to indicate a ballot is received. The ballots are then stored by unit/ lot. If a subsequent ballot is received for the same unit/lot, both ballots are discarded as per the governing documents (Bylaws 11, 2.2). • Before the counting begins, the blue envelope is opened and the sealed BALLOT envelope is removed. The white envelopes are placed in bundles of 25 to be counted. The counting will be done on Tuesday, March 25.
This process validates that individuals are eligible to vote (blue envelope with unit/lot and name) AND it ensures that the vote is received anonymously (white envelope containing the ballot with no identification). The blue envelopes are kept as per the governing documents for a specified period of time. All residents are welcome to observe the validation process. See the bulletin boards for ballot validation dates.

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Oro Valley. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans, which can attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room. On December 31 we delivered 500 pounds of aluminum cans to the recycle center. We received $295. We have received a total of $1,085 year-to-date. Thank you for coming out in support of our annual Pancake Breakfast. It was a success as usual due to the many volunteers who mix, cook and serve the breakfast and our faithful residents who eat it. Our top priority recommendation to the Board for the next capital improvement involved modifications to the Auditorium stage. The initial concept involved extending the stage into the floor area. Subsequent input determined that floor area reduction would negatively impact present uses for that space, so an alternate plan has been devised which will take some area on either side of the stage but eliminate all encroachment into the floor. The estimates will determine whether the stage project remains our top recommendation. The committee was tasked to see if there is any available room space for the Modelers’ Club. An initial survey indicates that there may be such space, but its availability is dependent on the degree of utilization by clubs to whom it is presently assigned. An update of such utilization will provide us with the information required to develop a recommendation. Posse

Next time you are out at your mailbox, take a look. Could it use a fresh coat of paint? Perhaps it’s time to paint the pole, box and flag. Check with Consumer Referral for names of people who will do it for you at a nominal cost, if you don’t wish to do the actual painting yourself. Another item that needs mentioning, since it is the responsibility of the homeowner, is raised pedestrian walkways (sidewalks). If the cement is raised where a walker could trip and fall, it needs to be repaired. Take a walk on your sidewalk, and take a look. Is yours OK? Reminder: All wrought iron perimeter fences in the community need to be painted the Weathered Brown color by January 1, 2016, so think ahead and plan. Perhaps you and your neighbor can share in the cost if the fence runs between the two yards. It might be a good idea at least to get a quote. Take a look, and then you’ll know how to prepare.

Going Paperless… Rewarding, but a Little Awkward Still
One page of paper…that is what I filed for the January 2014 Study Session packet. When I pulled the January 2013 packet for recycling there were 31 pages…a fairly normal size for a packet. We now access our packets digitally (paperless). Saving paper is important, saving storage space is important, but it hasn’t come without challenges. It’s been a learning experience using my iPad to view the packet of information and breaking the habit of wanting to feel the paper between my fingers. Frankly, I feel a little insecure in the process, but I know the feeling won’t last and it’s a better solution overall. I’m not the only one that can look at the packet digitally, you can too. The packets are now placed on our website under the Association tab and on the Board Meeting page. Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius
New Events
I just wanted to tell you how our two new events in December were a big success. The Cookie Exchange was a fun afternoon and the ladies and men who participated had a great time enjoying the afternoon having coffee and cookies and meeting new friends. The selection that they took home was impressive. This event will return, by request, next year.
First Place
Our second event was the Holiday Golf Cart Parade. The judges had a hard time picking our winners. We had 20 carts in the parade on the streets of the community. Those that entered the parade and the parade watchers rated it another success. It was a pleasure to see so many newer residents in the community participate in both events. Third Winners were: Place first place, Dea Calvin; second place, Mario Siracudse; third place,
Don Hess.

The next Hits and Giggles golf outing is scheduled for Sunday, February 23. Due to the success of the January outing, spots may be limited, so sign up early. Golf leagues, men’s and women’s clubs, are underway and welcoming new members. It is easy to get involved and play. To learn more, talk to a league representative. The greens are scheduled to be aerated with smaller holes and wider spacing on Monday and Tuesday, March 10 and 11. Based on green conditions last spring and the need to support root growth, a decision was made to conduct this work before the major aeration projects coming this summer. Feedback on the playability of the proposed changes to Hole #5 have been received, and comments are generally positive. Adding turf area on the far side of the wash to reduce the length of carry is being investigated. The Views 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club

Sun City Vistoso Foundation
The Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation, a separate and independent organization from the Association, established in 1998, provides a means through which tax-deductible gifts may be channeled to support qualified health, cultural, educational and charitable needs of Sun City Oro Valley and surrounding areas. Gifts may be made at any time by check, stocks or gifts-in-kind to the Foundation, 1565 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85755. Pres. Steve Taillie 825-8804 www.scovaz.com/clubs/foundation Your Sun City Vistoso Foundation has been quite active in the past year. We supported the AFC (Aquatic & Fitness Center) renovation with a grant to provide the art work required by the Town of Oro Valley and then helped with furnishing the lobby area, buying cabinetry and other projects. The opening of the AFC in January added another dimension to the lives of our residents. Other clubs and organizations within Sun City Oro Valley also benefited: the Vistoso Bike Club Photo by Steve Taillie who helped the ICS Food Bank and the Wheels for Kids, the Sun City Singers, Emerge! and the new Tee Box markers for the golf course. It is always rewarding to be able to help some of the local schools in our area with worthwhile projects such as the Ironwood Ridge High School Veterans’ Project, the CDO International Baccalaureate program and the Sun City Oro Valley Rock and Roll Club to help the Youth on Their Own program. Other groups benefiting from grants include the Pima Council on Aging, Alzheimer’s Association and AARP. To help improve the quality of life here in Sun City Oro Valley, the Foundation also sponsors the Dispose-a-Med and Shred-It Days. The Foundation does work for all of us. Don’t forget that you can help with your donations.

Sun City Singers Special Thank You by Paul Mercer Ever wonder how all the information in the Sun City Oro Valley phone directory is kept current? The ever-busy Carolyn Lerch handles all of the telephone directory updates for Sun City Oro Valley. Okay, so you may have already known that Carolyn does that. Did you know she supervises the distribution of the twothousand-plus books, that are hand delivered to all the SCOV homes each a year? Did you know that the resident listings are updated once a month? And did you know there were a total of 300+ changes in 2013? Did you know you can help Carolyn by updating your own listing on the SCOV site? You can find it in the Members Only section. Carolyn noted that the email addresses for our residents are also listed there as well. Carolyn is one of many volunteers that help keep our Association one of the best around. The next time you see her, give her a big thank you for her work.

At our February meeting we will discuss My Beloved World, by Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Justice Sotomayor looks back at her childhood living in drug-strewn Bronx apartment buildings in the 60s, with an alcoholic father who died when she was nine, a mother who was emotionally paralyzed by that death and herself a childhood diabetic forced to fend for herself. At our March meeting we will discuss Eleanor Roosevelt by Blanche Cook. Eleanor is portrayed as a woman who did not find herself until her mid-thirties and then was determined to live as she wanted. Thank you all for your cooperation in the changing of the month for collecting our dues. It will really help us out as so many of you aren’t here in the month of July. We really never got around to discussing new officers for this year, so I guess you’re still stuck with us. On New Year’s Eve the Hiking Club held its 13th Annual Celebratory Hike. Two groups of hikers converged in Alamo Canyon at Dove Mountain. There they enjoyed beautiful Indian flute music that was provided by fellow hikers, Frances and Dennis Everson. Afterward, we all shared a delicious pot luck and yummy culinary treat that was cooked up by a committee chaired by Mike and Kathy Moyer, who have been doing this for many years. And then came the hard part... What did the hikers know about our country’s national monuments? Needless to say, we all learned a thing or two and had a delightful time doing so.

Wilda is an excellent professional real estate agent. She is the most understanding and knowledgeable person I ever dealt with. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to buy or sell a home. She was very available to me and answered all my questions. Her pictures were outstanding. My home sold the 1st day we put it up. Thank you, Wilda, for all you have done for me.
