From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Participate in Your Community

by Jan Fischer Once upon a time in a land far far away in the deepest part of the southwest, located on ancient land, once occupied by the Apache, Yaqui and Papago Indians, is a community called Sun City Oro Valley. This community is populated by people from all parts of the country and the world. They are welcomed by all. Our residents are as diverse as the universe and all are welcomed with open arms to participate in all activities the community offers. The most important of those activities are the various committees which are tasked with continuing to define our community and maximize the lifestyle we have chosen. Our community is distinctly unique, and, our name is well known throughout the country. Our residents embrace the lifestyle offered and enjoy our many amenities. However, it is important for all of us to understand that the lifestyle we enjoy takes all of us working together on the various committees to provide continued success within and outside our community. It is important that we continue to reinforce our position as an upscale, unique community within Oro Valley. As a Board member, I experience the magic of our community on a daily basis and observe the hard work that the various committees perform. However, the committees need the participation and input from our many residents. I have personally observed residents, with backgrounds in various aspects of the business world, who have offered their expertise to committees and the amazing outcomes that information has provided. It is important for our community to continue to be recognized for our originality, innovation and ability to set ourselves apart from other communities. Our extraordinary and unique financial position provides all of us with innovations and activities that enhance the community in which we have chosen to live. I want to welcome our new residents and invite all residents, to participate in the committees. These committees provide outstanding information and recommendations that continue to set our community apart from others. We continue to attract new residents who bring new ideas and information to our community.

General Manager - Bob Mariani

Board of Directors Goals and Community Direction Every year the Board establishes new goals which provide general direction to staff and influence the Community’s direction. This year the process is different in that the Board is not only establishing goals but is also developing objectives, strategies and tactics. This in-depth planning identifies specific tasks that should be completed and a tracking system so that progress can be identified. In addition to the in-depth goal plan, the Board’s goals are both long and short-term. Typically, the primary focus is to complete most if not all of the goals during the upcoming year. Although I am confident that considerable progress will be made in achieving each of the goals, it is evident that they are all goals that this Board will attend to for the next few years and if future Boards consider these goals worthwhile, work will continue on them. You will quickly recognize the long-term approach after a brief review of these goals: 1. “Continue to maintain, develop and promote Sun City Oro Valley as a premier active adult community.” The use of the word “continue” conveys that this is an ongoing goal. 2. “Initiate a long-term review concerning the future of our housing stock, common areas and other related issues in SCOV and recommend changes including, if any, on an ongoing basis, to our governing documents and internal monitoring functions.” The use of the word “long-term” says it all. 3. “Develop a sustainable process and program of encour aging community members to become active in serving on Association committees, task forces and Board.” Great progress may be made this year in attaining this goal, yet it must be an ongoing effort, year after year. 4 “Continue to emphasize the importance of Board and administration communication with the members of our community and encourage further transparency and openness between the community and our operating committees, task forces and Board and staff leadership.” Again, the word “continue” conveys long-term. 5. “To meet our obligations for protecting, preserving and enhancing members’ property values, employ best financial practices to assure that SCOV achieves and maintains a high level of financial strength including reserves for community improvements.” It’s obvious that achieving this goal is a long-term process.

Weathered Brown wrought iron fences, January 1, 2016, what do they have in common? Our Development Standards state that all visible perimeter wrought iron fencing and gates will be painted Weathered Brown by this date. Much has been done already and our community is starting to take on a new look. A number of positive comments have been made from homeowners about the results of using the new fence color. As the date approaches questions are being asked about this Standard such as, ownership of fences, the role of our Association, common area guard rails and hand rails and, of course, the utility boxes. For this reason a Frequently Asked Questions document has been written and is available to you on the SCOV website or at the Welcome Center. If you have questions please look for the answers in this document. We hope you find it informative and helpful. Communication

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which can attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room. Please continue to save your aluminum cans because this supports our Loan Room, providing a way to purchase new equipment as needed. On May 13, we delivered 600 pounds of aluminum cans for which we received $384. This brings our year-to-date total receipts to $2,253.80 with a total of 3,820 pounds recycled. The Loan Room continues to be open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM throughout the summer. You will no longer be able to make telephone reservations until the Telephone Committee begins again in November, but you can always reserve the items you need by coming to the Loan Room. We have many items to loan, from medical items, to cots and rollaway beds, tables and chairs and some children’s items. Please feel free to visit us when we are open to see what we have. Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3 What’s right around the corner?

Any day now, our monsoon season will arrive in full force. Put some much-needed rain with our summer heat, and the growth of our foliage takes off! This is a surprise to new residents of our part of the country and an annual reminder to the rest of us that things really do grow here in the desert. Notice weeds which will pop up in the cracks of cement and where the sidewalk meets the street. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to get rid of those weeds and help keep our community looking nice, even in the middle of summer. Notice the roofs in your neighborhood, as strong winds can sometimes lift and move the tiles. Be a good neighbor and let others know if you see roof damage. With so many of our residents away, it’s helpful to keep an eye out for each other. Please take pride not only in your property but those of your neighbors and friends. Posse

The Big Picture

I was recently discussing the organizational structure of our community with a friend. His company is not a homeowners association and yet we found many similarities in the way we do business. We both have a Board, committees, customers (our customers are our residents) and employees. He was recounting a meeting he had with a leader in his business who provided some intuitive insight. He noted that because of his position as a leader, he was able to see the big picture and my friend, the employee, was in the trenches. They had talked about how helpful and essential both roles were to their organization. Immediately my thoughts drifted to the organization of SCOV. Each year our General Manager asks us to set goals and throughout the year to assess our progress. I thought of how often I’m in the trenches working through these goals. It affirmed my belief that our leadership has set an organizational structure into place that provides both the big picture and the hands to accomplish our goals. Some of my goals in 2013-2014 were to develop and implement the AFC technological requirements to provide a techno-savvy fitness center, facilitate the tabulation and distribution of our resident and new resident surveys, provide continual customer service training for our staff, manage the installation of our signage, refine the execution of our marketing program which includes a strong emphasis on increasing golf play—our most prominent asset, implement the secure access in our buildings and begin the process for redesigning our website. As I look back on the year and my goals, I was pleased with the progress made. The organization worked well. We were able to see the big picture because of the many residents involved in leadership and we were able to execute the plan because of the hands of our employees. We have a system that works.

Summer is Here

Are you cooling off in one of our pools? Are you enjoying happy hours at The Café? Are you walking inside the AFC with Lonnie on Monday and Friday from 1-2 PM to avoid the heat? Can you help collate the Tipster once a month and enjoy the company of others and meet new friends? Have you visited the library to get a book or movie to enjoy? Have you played the Wii system at the Desert Oasis? Have you tried some of the new menu items at The Café? Why not try a new craft in our Artisan Center. Keep in mind that even if the temperatures are hot outside, there is plenty to do inside at SCOV. The most important thing is my yearly reminder to please remember to drink plenty of water. The rule is “if you drink water when you are thirsty… it’s too late” please have a drink of water every hour or half hour. Be safe this summer and enjoy our free Sun City Singers show on the 4th of July. Community Services - Katy Mosier

Superintendent - Michael Kropf July is the traditional beginning of the monsoon season in southern Arizona. In regards to golf course maintenance, the start of monsoons is bitter-sweet. The good news is the golf course will start to green up quickly from the harsh dry weather of June because of the increased humidity combined with hot temperatures. However, the monsoons also bring the chance of heavy rain that has the potential of causing serious damage to holes located near washes. This summer many construction projects are taking place in the washes to prevent damage from the monsoon storms. In June, the wash between holes number 4 and 5 was reshaped and dredged to re-establish a channel to direct water flow away from the turf areas. This work should help during most storm events, but nothing can prevent damage from a very large storm. Rocks were again placed in vulnerable areas to protect the turf and excess sand was removed from the culverts under Del Webb to improve water flow. The wash that runs behind #11 green and between the right side of the hole and the houses is also going to get some work. The area where the water turns corners behind the green and near the houses is going to be reinforced to protect both the green and the houses from heavy water flows. Further down, the wash between the left side of hole #10 and the houses is also going to get reinforcement to protect those houses that have already experienced serious erosion near their homes. Golf Advisory

Chair Janet Kimball 825-3172 First Wednesday, 2 PM, WC3

Special thanks to Howard Schulz for serving as Golf Advisory chairman this past year. A new, lower cost bid has been received for new fencing in the chipping area. We hope to have improvements finalized this summer. Combo tees are progressing, as ratings for the different tees are currently being received. There will also be recommendations on which set of tees to use based on your handicap. Expect new scorecards to be in place later this year. Greens will be plugged in late June and again, with smaller holes, in August. Over-seeding is scheduled to start on September 20 with course re-opening on October 10. Check out new products in the Pro Shop, including new widebrimmed hats for hotter temperatures and new sun lotions. Please remember to use the 90 degree rule for golf carts to put less stress on the fairways. Our golf course depends on your care. Golf Advisory will not meet in July and August.

The volume editors state “The stories collected in Immigrant Voices are about daily life in a changing America, and about the kinds of relationships immigrants in the United States have with each other, with the people and places around them, and with those who remain in their home countries. Immigrant Voices presents a cross-section of new voices and ideas about these experiences.” On October 1 the story Letting Go to America will be discussed. Contact Jeff Amthor if you would like to lead discussion of a particular story.

SCOV Book Club Jane Fairchild 520-909-5069 janemail11@yahoo.com First Monday, 1:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

At our July meeting we will discuss the The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. Meet Don Tillman, a brilliant yet socially challenged professor of genetics, who’s decided it’s time he found a wife. In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which Don approaches all things, he designs the Wife Project to find his perfect partner: a 16-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late arrivers. The Rosie Project is a rare find: a book that restores our optimism in the power of human connection. At our August meeting we will discuss The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier. Ohio 1850. For a modest English Quaker stranded far from home, life is a trial. Untethered from the moment she leaves England, fleeing personal disappointment, Honor Bright is forced by family tragedy to rely on strangers in an alien, untamed landscape. Drawn into the clandestine activities of the Underground Railroad, a network helping runaway slaves escape to freedom, Honor befriends two exceptional people who embody the startling power of defiance. Eventually she must decide if she too can act on what she believes in, whatever the personal cost. Newcomers and guests are always welcome. Light refreshments will be served. Our next full meeting will be Wednesday, October 8. Happy gardening and be safe during the Prickly Pear Cactus fruit. monsoon storms. Gardening Tips: Native summer annuals can be planted from seed such as Arizona Poppy (Kallstroemia grandiflora), Chinchweed (Pectis papposa) and Devil’s Claw (Proboscidea parviflora). These annuals can be difficult to germinate, but soaking the seed overnight in water may help initiate the germination process. With proper plant selection, you can provide your garden with color as there are many native and desert-adapted plants that will continue to flower through the summer and into the fall.

Have you tried and are you now using the new method of volunteering to be a room monitor? This online system doesn’t require you to trot down to the lab and see which day/time is available to volunteer your services as a monitor. Go to our website and click on the link Club Room Calendar. Follow the instructions and it’s all done. If you approve of it, please tell Mike Carroll, 818-0556, as this has been his hard work setting up this trial edition for room sign-ups. If you find the temperature too high this month and don’t have enough material at home to read, drop in at the club library. Locate a book or other instructional material that will help to get answers for your searches to confront those brick walls that face you. The monitor will help you check it out. Gin Rummy

Late in May a group of our more adventurous members undertook the awesome challenge of hiking the Grand Canyon rim to rim, a distance of approximately 24 miles accomplished in three days. Very early on the first day they descended the North Rim via the North Kaibab Trail, lodged two nights at Phantom Ranch and then on the third day they began the ascent of the Bright Angel Trail to the top of the South Rim. Well done hikers! Please note a change in the hike leader for the orientation hikes through September. The orientation hike is a requirement prior to joining the club. If you wish to join the club, give Jim a call or an email. As the summer months continue, we are offered a choice of hiking in Catalina State Park, the Tortolita Mountains as well as hikes around our beautiful Views Golf Course. The benefits can’t be beat and include increased core strength (abdomen and back muscles), balance, flexibility, muscle tone, stamina and well being. Joseph Pilates, the founder, practiced well into his eighties. Give our classes a try or just come by and watch. The cost is only $8/class with annual club dues of $20 pp. Contact Mary. Pinochle

Poets Corner

Racquetball

Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762 Monday, 9:30-11:30 AM, Desert Oasis

Pres. Al Lichaa 812-0198 Sec./Treas. John Wilson 818-2368 Open Mixed Doubles Surely poems about love abound in every language but one

that deals with anger, an equally potent emotion, must be scarce. April Bernard begins her “Anger” poem with a bang, almost literally: “When in a farmhouse that smelled of old rinds and wet cigarette butts I hoisted the shotgun to my shoulder and aimed but did not fire at the man who had just taken my virginity like a snack, with my collusion, but still—” There are other vivid examples, but the poem keeps returning to the initial incident and ends somewhat enigmatically with “I always lie when I always say I didn’t know the gun was loaded.” Bernard has managed to safely discharge her pent up feelings about this real or imagined happening within the confines of her poem. It might even be said that poetry is more effective and less expensive than psychotherapy at helping the poet cope with a strong emotion.

The hot weather has arrived and, if you enjoy playing racquetball, there’s no better place than our air-conditioned court: cool place, good exercise. Come and join us during our club times. Our president will be more than happy to make arrangements to teach beginners. Have a nice, safe summer.

We can meet even though the new machines are arriving. Because Pet Beds has so much fabric and polyester scraps, we do not need any more at the present time. Everyone has been very generous for which we thank you. We could use larger pieces of fabric (at least 22” by 28”) for the outside pillow cases. Please mark these for Pet Beds. We also would welcome more volunteers to cut up the scraps when we meet in the Sewing Room. The Humane Society is always very grateful for the pet beds we make for them.

For Woodworkers Club members who are staying here during the summer, this is the perfect time to start that project. If you don’t have a project, it is also the perfect time to practice on the machines to improve your knowledge and skills. Bring in some wood and make some sawdust. Wilda listed our Sun City home March 1, 2014, and by May 14, 2014, we successfully closed on our property within 2-1/5 % of our asking price. She kept us informed all of the way through the process. The pictures she took and advertising was of the highest quality, all of which helped sell the property. Wilda is so professional, detail & dedicated to her job is beyond words. We highly recommend Wilda to handle any real estate transaction anyone may have.
