From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Caring, Contributing and Communicating...

by Steve Knapp … are critical to the vitality and future of our shared community. And what you do personally counts greatly in helping keep SCOV such a wonderful place to live. Contributing often takes different forms at different phases during our time here, but we can always seek to establish a dialogue by being well informed and offer reasoned opinions. (The latter point is a constant objective of the Board and Committees.) The direction of SCOV comes from you. The Board of Directors Mission is “to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in SCOV as an active adult community.” It is you who elect Board members ... and thus support the many others who devote time and energy to committee work-where much of the real work gets done. Where do you find out what’s really going on? A neighbor may promote his or her opinions, but nothing beats personal fact-finding if something is important to you. In the 2013 survey, 79% of 1,935 owners said they were very or extremely satisfied with SCOV information sources available; 97% is the total adding those “moderately” satisfied. The Tipster is the single most often cited information source, but there’s much more. At www.suncityorovalley.com you can access the Calendar for location and time of future Board and Committee meetings (all are open) and past meeting minutes. You can learn what will be discussed at an upcoming Board meeting-- agendas and the same background pre-meeting packets provided to Directors are available online. Sign up for “In The Know” to receive many information emailings automatically, including the General Manager’s Weekly Report and an informal newsletter account of Board meetings (usually a day or two after a meeting). View Board minutes as well as all Committees’ membership names and minutes. Development of a refreshed web site is planned. Talk live with Directors personally before and during Study Sessions, and before and during Regular Board meetings. And also at General Manager/Director Coffees, usually held twice a month. Have a question, concern? You can direct an email (or drop off a letter at the Welcome Center) to a Committee Chair or individual Board member—or, to reach all Board

SCOV Fiscal Budget 2014-2015

This year the Budget process was very similar to past years. The first step in the process is to have the department managers develop their respective budgets. Once these draft budgets are complete, they are each reviewed and finetuned in meetings with the department manager, controller and general manager. While this process is taking place, clubs that use Association equipment are contacted to seek input for equipment replacement/repair needs, and meetings are held with staff and volunteers to determine the proposed golf rates. Once these steps have been completed, the Budget is submitted to the Finance and Budget Committee for several reviews then on to the Board for review and approval. One new improvement in the process this year was to require all department managers to submit their budgets electronically with more detail than in past years. This approach will provide more comprehensive information, and possibly more important, will provide a central accounting record for subsequent years that can be used by the department managers, controller, general manager, Finance and Budget Committee and the Board during the budget process. The conclusion of the Budget process this year was that a stable operating budget was developed which resulted in no increase in the annual dues related to the operating budget. However, to best assure long-term health of the Asset Reserve Fund, the annual allocation to the Fund was increased from $950,000 to $1,000,000. The need for this increase was reflected in the measurements used to reflect adequacy of the Fund. The manner in which the Fund is determined to be adequate is by cash flow analysis and percentage funded (acceptable level is generally deemed to be 70%). In addition to the increase to the Asset Reserve Fund allocation, a new Wash Fund was instituted for potential erosion mitigation. Initially this Fund will receive an annual allocation of $15,000. The Fund balance will be reviewed annually and the allocation adjusted based on need. The above noted increase to the Asset Reserve Fund and development of the new Wash Fund were the primary reasons that the annual dues will be increased for the next fiscal year from $1,600 to $1,620 or an increase of about 1.25%.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle... in Sun City Oro Valley

The Art of the Possible

Photos by Steve Taillie, Barkcarving by Danny McIntyre

When the novelist George Eliot wrote, “It’s never too late to become what you might have been,” she could have been talking about residents of Sun City Oro Valley. Every day through the wide variety of clubs, individuals are discovering artistic abilities they never knew they possessed. A typical example is Danny McIntyre, whose newfound skills in barkcarving are surprising even to him. “I discovered it by happenstance one day while walking by a display case,” he says. Not having had any experience with similar crafts since his mandatory woodworking class in high school, he says, “I dropped by one of their meetings, and Ted Rydzewski, who runs the Barkcarvers Club, gave me an introduction.” Although McIntyre admits he never believed he had an “artist’s eye,” he is now able to visualize and carve tiny, detailed castles with help from others in the club. “Beginners are welcomed,” he says, “and they’ll even show you how to have an artist’s eye.” According to Rydzewski, the pieces are carved from the bark of cottonwood trees which have been dead for at least five years. He buys it for three to four dollars a pound and says it usually takes 12 to 14 hours to complete a medium-sized piece. “Everybody has their own technique once they develop their own skills,” he says. Barkcarver Laurie Lichaa, Sculpture Club Ted president, says it’s most imporRydzewski tant for beginners to feel welcome. “At my first meeting I was asked what they could do to make it an enjoyable experience for me, and I still continue that message today,” she says. She first saw the sculpture group at a Sun City Craft Fair where she learned that what looked like small bronze statues were actually made from polymer clay applied over a frame, baked for 2 hours in a regular oven and then finished with paint or patina. Having previously made jewelry from the same clay, she was eager to try. Now, Lichaa says, a radio plays oldies but goodies while members work on their projects. Occasional classes are available,

but support is always offered, especially to new members. “It’s absolutely amazing what these people make, and most of them have had no experience whatsoever,” she says. For Faith and Don Heitmann, the Silversmith and Lapidary Club turned out to be the perfect bonding experience. “We’re rockhounds from Idaho,” says Faith, “but the silversmithing is new.” Since moving to Sun City in October 2013, the pair has already designed and crafted several pieces of original silver jewelry embellished with highly polished stones. Even though the Heitmanns practice their jewelry-making skills together, they’ve each discovered an individual perk. Because of Don’s experience and expertise, he’s been asked to maintain the intricate lapidary equipment in the studio which is similar to that he had been using in Idaho. Faith has created her own “signature” gift which she enjoys giving to friends as a souvenir – a wine bottle stopper topped with hand-cut and polished stones. Jan Thomas is another resident whom art has taken in a new direction. After retiring from her education career in Casper, Wyoming, she was searching for a new passion to replace her longtime hobby of downhill skiing. “In 2008 I just started drawing by myself,” she says. “Then I tried watercolor for a while, but I felt I never got that good with it.” After relocating and seeing what members of the Colored Pencil Club were doing, Thomas says she knew she had found the perfect pastime. “Art is very new for me, but I tend to be a detail-oriented person. Colored pencil is an exBarkcarver tremely slow medium John and typically very detailed.” Johnston Another aspect Thomas says she appreciates is convenience. “It’s such a transportable medium,” she says, adding that she often takes her art materials along when she travels. Although reluctant to part with her original artwork, Thomas has taken another step forward. She now has her drawings scanned, reduced and printed on greeting cards which are for sale in the Sun City Gift Shop. Summing up her own artistic experience as well as that of many others, Thomas concludes, “Sun City is a world of opportunity.”

As you know, May is the month of change in SCOV. This month we say goodbye to two of our committee members as their terms have ended. We would like to thank Don Stewart, our former Chairman, and Karen Koch for all of their work and countless hours that they gave to the ARC. Jim Cundiff, our Community Services representative we work so closely with, will be leaving us, and we are welcoming Katy Mosier in his place. The Development Standards have been reviewed and changes are being recommended. Stay tuned. Once the changes have been approved by the Board, they will be highlighted for you, and new copies made available via the SCOV website or hardcopy in the Welcome Center. Rest assured we will still be here to help and assist you any way we can. Communication

Chair Janice Strassburg 818-7793 janicestrassburg@gmail.com No meetings until September www.scovaz.com/committees/communications/index.html

Even though the header will stay the same for now, our meetings are cancelled until September, however you can still convey your ideas to me or the Board. One resident expressed thoughts on nonresidents as members of our SCOV clubs. What are your thoughts on that aspect of the community? The numbers are growing since the Board decreed that 20% of a club membership could be nonresidents. I am interested in your feelings. Call or send me an email.

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which can attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room. Please continue to save your aluminum cans because this supports our Loan Room, providing a way to purchase new equipment as needed. On April 8, we delivered 360 pounds of aluminum cans for which we received $212.40. This brings our year-todate total to $1,899.80. The Loan Room continues to be open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM throughout the summer. You will no longer be able to make telephone reservations beginning May 1 until the Telephone Committee begins again in November, but you can always reserve the items you need by coming to the Loan Room. We hope to see you for medical needs, cots and rollaways, tables and chairs and some children’s items. Please feel free to visit us when we are open to see what we have available. Consumer Referral

Artists of the month are Julie Holtry and Jinnie Wilson. Julie specializes in jewelry made out of fused glass. She especially enjoys using dichroic glass, with its properties of refracting light in all directions, lending a shimmering quality to her pieces. Her most popular items are dragonflies and flower bursts. She also makes greeting cards from lovely Chinese brush paintings by her mother. Jinnie has created thousands of angels over the years, making her our angel lady. Her items can be used for gift embellishments, small dolls, as thank-yous or hostess gifts. Made out of glass jars, wooden heads, cloth, buttons, small findings, feathers and beads, each is unique and delightful, just waiting to bring a smile to a special person. Summer is on the way, and we bid farewell to those who leave our community for the upcoming hot months ahead. Remember to have someone look after your home and yard while you are gone, even if it is only for part of the summer. A messy yard is an indication that you are gone and puts your home and belongings in a possible unsafe situation. During our summer monsoon season, weeds grow in abundance and need to be removed as quickly as possible. With the upcoming summer storms, there are times when it’s necessary to reach homeowners due to roof tile damage and/or trees down. Don’t forget to leave your summer ad-

Chair Robert Hefner 825-4825 First Tuesday, 3 PM, Activity Center/Hopi www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/

Posse members who patrol our community five or more times per year are referred to as Frequent Flyers. A breakfast was held March 27 to honor this year’s Frequent Flyers at which Oro Valley Police Department Chief Daniel Sharp presented a certificate of appreciation to each Frequent Flyer for their contribution to the safety of our community and of Oro Valley. There were 87 Posse members who patrolled our neighborhoods five or more times in 2013, several of whom served on ten or more patrols. These and all Posse members deserve a word of thanks for all they do to help keep SCOV the safest community in Oro Valley and Oro Valley one of the ten safest towns in the United States. Secure Access Update Your membership cards are now needed to gain access into Catalina Vista, Desert Oasis and the Aquatic & Fitness Center. Please carry your card with you. If you’d like it to be punched and receive a free lanyard, please come to the Administration Office. Do not punch your cards yourselves as there are only two safe zones on the card in which it may be punched. Punching in another area may result in the card being damaged.

Key Fobs If you would like a key fob for use with the secure access system, they are available at the Welcome Center Office for $10. It’s not a substitute for your card. The fob will provide you access to the Catalina Vista, Desert Oasis and Aquatic & Fitness Center. It will not work at the library.

Additionally, you may need to contact the Post Office. If you created a forwarding order with the Post Office and it’s over a year old, it will not work. Make sure the Post Office has your correct mailing information on file. In this year’s mailing there will be a report on the financial position of the Association from the current fiscal year and for the coming year. It will include the budget for the 20142015 year and a report from the Treasurer, Dick Brammel. The General Manager will provide you with information about the Association including the options for dues payments. What’s important to remember is that there is a coupon that needs to accompany your check. We have a checkprocessing service that is especially helpful; please send the coupon and your check to the PO Box in Phoenix. There will also be information on conducting estate sales within the Association. Along the lines of communication, there will be information on how to sign up for the In the Know and Members Only sections of the website. Be looking for the great programs being offered at our golf course. If you love to be outside and active, consider signing up for a class, taking a private lesson or hitting a bucket of balls at the driving range. There are special events, like the Hit and Giggle, that are lots of fun and sell out quickly, so sign up in the Pro Shop for the next event. There are four golf clubs at The Views Golf Course (men and women’s 9-hole and 18-hole) and they have a great time filled with activity and socializing. Get involved in one of these clubs. There are special discounts for first-time pass purchasers. See the flyer for details. Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius In March it was my turn to give a staff manager’s report. I was asked by many to print it in my column in the Tipster:

Do you see the magic in SCOV?

“Each morning I arrive to work early and I see the magic happen. The maintenance crew is loading their carts with supplies to handle any problems or to repair scheduled items. The Café crew is in the Café greeting hungry residents at 7 AM as food trucks are arriving at a scheduled time to drop off food. The Pro Shop is getting ready for the day and people are calling in for tee times. Golf course and Common Area Maintenance workers have arrived at pre-dawn hours to maintain the beauty of the course and common area maintenance. The monitors are in place to handle the needs of facilities from uncovering the pools, basic cleaning and to setting up rooms for residents’ use. Residents are walking into the Welcome Center for information regarding painting, making changes to their home and buying event and exercise tickets. Residents are going to the library or come in to get a magazine. Accounting is reconciling all previous day cash coming into the community from the Café, Pro Shop and Gift Shop and making sure all the bills are paid. The Tipster is being planned for next month and everyone is turning in articles. The facility director has made sure that everyone is scheduled into the correct room for a meeting, event or exercise. Managers are starting to get ready for the 30 projects that are planned for summer.

These are just a few of the magical things that happen each day. SCOV in my opinion, as both a staff member and as a resident, is that SCOV is like a well-oiled machine and it’s like watching a symphony play. In an orchestra everyone must do a part to create beautiful music. That’s what happens in SCOV because everyone is doing their job and that makes that makes the magic happen.” Community Services - Katy Mosier

The Café News I’m so happy to be your new Food and Beverage Director and look forward to a long, successful relationship with you. It’s been a long and interesting road to get here. I was raised around restaurants. My father’s best friends were all incredible chefs and great people who were always kind to me. My family owned a steakhouse in Vince Hotz, SCOV Santa Barbara when I was a kid durFood & Beverage Director ing which time I was taught to respect food and found out early that the kitchen was a great milieu for creative expression. My family moved to Portland, Oregon when I was a teenager. This is where I began my professional endeavors in the industry learning about seafood while cooking for McCormick’s for a few years. After high school, I attended the School of Fine Arts at Boston University and S.U.N.Y. at New Paltz, both for acting. I moved back to Portland for three years and cooked for a couple of excellent Italian restaurants where I learned the importance of simple recipes built around quality, local ingredients. In 1986, I moved to Seattle due to the great restaurant and music scenes. This was before the age of Food Network and the Celebrity Chef and I decided to move to the front of the house where I became a food server in fine dining. This led to an interest in wine and spirits and, being in the Northwest, there were plenty of opportunities to learn about the outstanding wines of the area. I became a bar manager at the Yankee Grill where I was afforded the opportunity to create craft cocktails and continue my education in wine, beer and liquor. After 21 years in the Seattle drizzle, my wife and I decided it was time to find some sunshine. We chose Tucson and moved here eight years ago. I became the bar manager at Oro Valley Country Club where I was able to create a successful wine and spirits program including some outstanding wine dinners featuring Arizona wineries. Ironically, I won an award for the highest sales of Washington wines in Arizona. The prize was a trip for two to Seattle to attend the Grand Wine Tasting. I later became the general manager at Zona 78 on Tanque Verde. While there, the restaurant consistently won awards for the best of Tucson in multiple categories. Here, I continued to build relationships with local winemakers, brewmasters, farmers and ranchers, always striving to create menus that utilized as much quality, local ingredients as possible. Last year, I was the Food and Beverage Manager at the Sheraton on Grant. This position gave me the opportunity to work closely with large banquet functions. The restaurant in the hotel, Fire and Spice, had wonderful Sonoran cuisine and the chef was the runner up in the Iron Chef Tucson 2013. That leads us to the present. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be here at Sun City Oro Valley. There are some great things in the future here, and I will be utilizing my skills and my local relationships to elevate the experience in the café and all food and beverage operations. There is already a very good staff on hand, and this can only help us transition to greater heights. I look forward to meeting you all. If you have suggestions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to talk with me. I love the feedback.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis

Do I Need Different Types of Exercise?

Different types of exercise benefits health in different ways: Aerobic activities like running, biking and swimming strengthen your heart and increase your endurance. Strength training like weight lifting or resistance training builds muscle and bone mass, improves balance and prevents falls. It’s one of the best counters to frailty in old age. Flexibility exercises like stretching and yoga help prevent injury, enhance range of motion, reduce stiffness and limit aches and pains. At first, just focus on getting any kind of exercise, whatever it may be. As exercising becomes your habit, try adding variety. If you keep at it, the benefits of exercise will begin to pay off.

Golf

Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs

www.theviewsgolfclub.com In an effort to get more residents interested in golf, Rick Sample and I have been offering Golf Schools. Most classes have been full and our next class will begin Saturday, May 10; it will be an intermediate class. Please go to our website for more information. Beginning in May, our schedule will change for tee times. Please adjust your walking and riding schedules accordingly. Here are the changes:

Mon., Tee Time Day Tee times: 7 AM-5 PM Tues., 7:30 AM Shotgun, Golf Course Maintenance (No Golf after 12:30 PM) Wed. Men’s Club Shotgun 7:30 AM, Tee Times 9:30 AM- 5 PM (Beginning on May 14) Thurs., 9 Hole Clubs (Same 9) at 7:30 AM Shotgun, Tee times 8:45 AM-5 PM (Beginning on May 15) Fri., Sat. and Sun. They will remain tee time days 7 AM-5 PM. Golf Course Walking Times Before 6 AM; after 6 PM Please stop by the golf shop and pick up a divot news letter to keep you advised of any possible changes, or visit our website.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf May is typically the time of the year that the winter golfing season ends and the summer season begins. The temperatures become warmer, and golf course maintenance gets very busy. This year the summer is going to be extra busy with the normal maintenance as well as several significant projects. During the month of May, the fairways will be aerified and top-dressed to begin the transition back to the Bermuda grass. Thin areas will be sprigged the same as every year, so by July the fairways will be in good condition again. As mentioned last month, the greens are also going to be transitioned chemically in May to remove Poa Annua weeds. Another large project in May will be the wash on the left side of hole #5 which will be dredged to re-establish the correct depth. This will help protect the fairways and tees during monsoons in July. In August, the pond next to the pump station is going to be drained for repairs. There is a layer of silt at the bottom of the pond that is being pulled into our irrigation system every time it waters. This silt is damaging the pumps, sprinkler heads, and also contaminating our traps. A wall will be built around the intake pipe to prevent this silt from entering the system. Summers are always busy, but this one is going to be even busier.

Garage Doors

If you have a new garage door, remember it must be painted either the main body color or one of the trim colors of your house.

Golf Advisory

Peg and Jerry Bushong at Hit and Giggles.

Tournament play peaked last month with club championships and member guest events. It is encouraging to see new club members. Congratulations to all involved for the success of the Hit and Giggle outings which filled the course with players, laughter and golf. Scorecards will be updated for next year, as combo tee choices will be added for golfers. We also plan to have handicap recommendations for use with each set of tees, along with an updated course map for newcomers. We have started a list of simple improvements that can be done to enhance playability and enjoyment at The Views. Talk to your clubs with any ideas. Special thanks to Mike and crew for the excellent condition of the course. Work will begin soon to remove winter grasses. The greens will be done first, with the fairways following later. Please try to keep your carts out of any wet areas. The Views 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club

Feature

Make ‘Em Laugh Two years ago most of the dance clubs joined together to put on a show called Movin’ and Groovin’ to give our residents an idea of the types of dancing available at SCOV. The presidents of each participating dance club voted to give all of our net proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project. The total amount was $1,972. This year’s performance was no different in that the four people involved in producing the show (Joan Morris, Barbara Satterly, Paul Kimball, and Carol Wyatt) all voted to send the net proceeds once again to the Wounded Warrior Project. This year’s donation will be over $5,000. DVDs of the show are still selling, so the amount keeps growing. This show, Make ‘Em Laugh, was great fun from the moment rehearsals started until the cast party on March 29. We created and cheered each other on, laughed at our silly skits, made great new friends, and did it all for such a worthy cause. We thank all who gave their time, energy and expertise to produce and act in this show. And we especially thank our fellow SCOV residents for coming to see us, even on the big Arizona basketball game night.

We work in all media, discuss art happenings and shows in and about the Tucson area, and help each other become better artists by constructive painting critique. The Art League is currently exhibiting a wonderful show in the Activity Center, entitled Roads, Paths and Walks. We invite the entire community to spend time there and just marvel at the art talent residing in SCOV. It will potentially spark that latent desire in you to try your hand at producing artwork. We are a casual, sociable, sincere group of artists who will help you create a piece to be proud of.

Thirtyfour hardy souls from the Astronomy Club turned out for a terrific behind-the-scenes tour of Kitt Peak on March 27. The Astronomy Club had a very successful 2013-2014 season. Our outreach program with the Coronado K-8 School continues to grow in size and reputation throughout the Tucson area. The club has tripled its membership and has conducted successful field trips to the Flandrau Planetarium, The OSIRUS-REx project office and Kitt Peak. The annual club cookout and star party in April was a great success. Planning is already underway for the 2014-2015 season with trips to the UofA Mirror Lab and Mt. Lemmon among the planned outings. The first club meeting for the new season will be October 16.

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, May 2014

Plans are going forward to build new Bocce courts. It’s been pretty much decided that Catalina Vista is out, so we won’t have to worry about the location any more. There are two choices that still have to be decided. Either north of the Social Hall, or in the grassy area just south of our existing courts. Either of these would be fine with us. Hopefully we will get all our improvements. I would like to thank Jack, Keith, and Jan for all their work. I don’t think we would have these happy conclusions without their help. Our Mah Jongg group has had a good turn out this year. We are always ready to welcome new players. Come and join in the fun. We know you will have a good time.

After many months of building the model of the USS Arizona, it is now in the display case in the Activity Center/ Kachina Lounge. The model presents the USS Arizona as it was at the time it was sunk in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The club is now in the planning process for its new room in the Artisan Center. This room will provide a working area for building all types of models including trains, planes, ships and much more. A layout for a model railroad will be planned and built by club members. All SCOV residents are welcome at our monthly meetings. We welcome new members, both historians and model builders. Join us to see what we are about and enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet roll. What members bring in for Show and Tell serves as a conduit for our discussions. One member’s scale model may be an example of something another member may have had some first-hand experience with either in designing, building or operating the prototype. In March we had a fun barbecue social and we began a ladder-play round robin with 52 participants. Al Womac and Larry Walker had the top averages, followed by Mary Ann Diridon and Vince Driski. We hope to continue play this fall and to add new people. Our summer schedule will begin May 1 and continue until the end of September. The court times for various levels of club play are posted on the bulletin boards at the courts. The remaining hours are available to any SCOV resident and can be reserved by filling in the sheet found in the reservation book in the gray bin at the pickle ball courts. Anyone wishing to learn to play pickleball should contact Brenda or Maria (see header). As we look forward to the addition of three new courts this summer, we need to be aware of any changes due to construction. Always check the bulletin boards for new notices. Pilates

We now meet in new AFC/Studio 2 and are loving it. There’s much more room to spread out our mats for the Pilates group mat classes, conducted by our professional instructors. At each session they have us start out with warmup exercises, sometimes using the dance bar for balance and deep breathing. Any strenuous exercises are modified for those of us with limitations. We all agree that the benefits for seniors can’t be beat and include: increased core strength (abdomen and back muscles), balance, flexibility, muscle tone, stamina and well being. Joseph Pilates, the founder, practiced well into his eighties. Give our classes a try or just come by and watch. Cost is only $8 pp/class with annual club dues of $20 pp. Call Mary Ayers. way around.” Stanley Moss includes this quote in a poem entitled What that appears to be a philosophical quest for the meaning of life offering statements such as, “There is no proof that reality simply is what is.” Moss uses bits of narrative, allusions, unusual comparisons and striking metaphors to explore his theme. One section describes how “voiceless Stringbirds sound cello-like purple-feathered love calls with their wings—now stringed instruments—a dark paradoxical gift, like John Milton’s gift of inner sight after his loss of outer sight.” “The stringbird is never caged,” he writes, “as gods are caged in houses of worship. I hear its wings calling in the woods.” This long and thoughtful poem contains darkness along with a “reason to hope because of love, laughter and nightingales.” If, indeed, poets are instruments of language, one might well question who, then is the musician, who the composer, or simply choose to refute the intriguing statement.

May 13 will be our last meeting until September. A lot of our quilting friends have left for cooler places, but some of us lifers will be around. Bring some handwork to work on for our last meeting. Have a safe and productive summer. Happy quilting.

Congratulations to the participants, tournament committee, and to the financial contributors for helping us achieve a successful Ladies Doubles Tournament. We raised $800 for a worthy cause, Cheer Bears. We have received very positive feedback on the new tournament format producing three-sets of winners from three flights. The warmer months are upon us and many of our members will be away from Sun City. However, the club is carrying on with its love of all things ukulele. Bill Moeller and Don Bong will be taking over band leader/kumu duties until the fall season starts again. When we reconvene it will be on the first Wednesday of each month, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge, 3:30-5 PM (same time, same place, just one week earlier and two doors down). This would be an excellent time to do what member Jan Bahnson advised at the April meeting: do an annual review of your budget and spending habits, evaluate your assets and liabilities, review your portfolio’s asset allocation and determine if your risk exposure is still in line with your tolerance and goals. Pres. John Njaa 825-5486 Membership Lauren Strassburg 818-7793 www.suncityorovalley.com/clubs/woodworkers/index.html

All of us who use the woodshop are accustomed to having glue, sandpaper, drills and drill bits, saw blades, router bits, hand tools and other supplies available when we need them. The time is approaching, however, when the steadily dwindling funds in the club’s bank account will jeopardize that benefit. The problem is the annual dues are the same now as when the club was formed more than twenty years ago. Since then, the cost of everything we need has gone up significantly and the more complex machines we enjoy require more expensive blades, abrasives and other consumables. The club’s financial situation was discussed at the March 19 club meeting. The discussion led to a motion that the annual dues be raised to $25 pp effective January 1, 2015. The motion was carried with all but one member voting in favor. The next club meeting is May 21, 1:30 PM, Desert Oasis/ Saguaro. Writers Club

Paul Mercer 333- 3490 pawmerc@gmail.com Second and Fourth Friday, 1-3 PM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Lemmon

The Writers Club welcomes residents with an interest in the challenge of putting down their ideas on paper. Our goal is to have fun with our language and our ideas. We pick our own subject or write about an assigned subject and then read it to the group. A short and friendly critique by the group follows, along with some interesting conversations. If you are working on a novel or memoir, bring some pages to the meeting for review and encouragement. We can help you go on to your next chapter or to the finale.

Wilda brings real professionalism to her work. She promptly returned calls and text messages, responding to our questions and requests through the holiday season. She remained calm and patient through many showings in several different neighborhoods as we changed our minds about where we wanted to live. In the end, I think she may have understood before we did what we were looking for in a house and where. She did a map search with a set of parameters, and as we eliminated those houses we’d already seen, the ideal home popped up for us. Wilda was clearly representing our interests and was not just completing a transaction. From offer to closing we were able to complete the purchase in less than 3 weeks with the help of Wilda and her phenomenal attention to detail, while we were out of state for most of that time! We would recommend her without reservation. Julie Hallquist and Paul Parsons, Tucson Home Buyers
