General Manager - Bob Mariani
From The Board of Directors
Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents. Board Of Directors - Article
Steve Taillie tailliesteve.scov@gmail.com Are You Willing to be of Service to SCOV? by Steve Taillie
It is fall and it is time to seek candidates for the 2016-2019 Board of Directors. Robin Coulter just sent out an email looking for candidates. It is a way for you to serve SCOV and be part of the decision-making process. It also keeps one well informed of what is going on in SCOV. This is my second three-year term on the Board. A number of former Directors have also served more than one term. We are always looking for new blood to make that commitment. With all of the residents that live in SCOV it is sad that there are only a few that are willing to serve. The General Manager sees to the daily operation, prepares the operating budget and is supervisor for the various department managers. He reports to the Board of Directors, and it is the Board that approves the budget. If one does not want to make a three-year commitment to serve on the Board of Directors, the various committees (Property, Long Range Planning, Marketing, etc.) are always looking for new members. These are one-year terms with an optional one-year extension. My only wish is after you read this a few of you would be willing to serve SCOV.

bmariani@suncityorovalley.com 917-8080 Considering Board Candidacy
According to what I have learned from the CAI (Community Association Institute) and the CMIA (Community Managers International Association), it is best to have certain attributes or qualifications to be an effective Board member. Although none of these ideas are originally mine, I agree with most if not all of these CAI and/ or CMIA positions. Work well with others: Unlike so many situations that we face where we can make decisions on our own without consulting others, Board decisions are made by seven individuals in the case of SCOV, often with diverse opinions. Therefore, working with a group such as this requires a willingness to discuss, sometimes compromise and occasionally agree to disagree then move on to the next issue. Communications: Although effective discussion is important, careful listening is the most important aspect of communications for an effective Board member. It’s essential to hear/listen to and know the facts plus gather well-balanced input on all subject matter at hand. Objectivity: It’s very difficult to be objective when making decisions about one’s castle and community. Often subjectivity easily enters into the fold, yet making an effort to remain at arms-length so that an objective viewpoint may be established can greatly assist in making beneficial decisions for the community. Decorum: Board issues can often become emotional and/or divisive. From personal experience, I can attest that it can be very difficult to remain calm and respectful. However, it is important to maintain a reasonably high degree of decorum especially during Board meetings in an effort to have effective meetings and maintain a congenial community. Willingness to serve: The most important qualification in my estimation is the willingness to serve the community as a whole. The opposite end of the spectrum is to have an agenda of one or two pet issues as a basis for Board candidacy. Although the attributes or qualifications above aren’t all inclusive, they serve as a sound basis for Board candidacy. If you fit that bill, SCOV would benefit from your willingness to serve on the Board of Directors.

This month’s featured artists are Roland and Elaine Deeter. Elaine began creating greeting cards a few years ago for her personal use. “Then I decided to start making cards to sell in our Gift Shop. It is a wonderful way to contribute to our community and meet new people. I enjoy seeing people appreciate my work and hearing how their friends and family are happy to receive a handmade item.” After building two homes, Roland switched to smaller projects. Beginning with end-grain cutting boards, he moved on to items made from exotic and local woods. He makes pens, flashlights, and other items from both wood and acrylic materials. He is always looking for woods with color and movement to help tell his creative stories. Loan Room - Community Assistance

Not often enough do we say thank you to the people around us. Perhaps, as homeowners, we should say an occasional thank you to our neighbor who borders our personal property. If, when he has his own yard cleaned up by a landscaper, he includes part of yours which may have a problem caused by his foliage, it just might deserve a thank you. Neighborhood Pride issues sincere thanks to all homeowners who: • keep trees trimmed so stop signs are visible • keep trees trimmed up high off sidewalks • keep plants trimmed back off sidewalks • keep their yards weed-free, neat and tidy • make sure all lights are burning in house number plates Thanksgiving is a good time to sincerely thank all homeowners who take pride in their own personal property and work diligently to keep our entire community a beautiful place in which to live. This month the Properties Committee will be undertaking many tasks affecting SCOV. We will be conducting an inspection of all HOA-owned facilities to help determine the need for current and future repairs. We will also be hosting a community forum to update everyone on the Solar Generation Feasibility Study. Soon after the forum, the committee will decide what recommendations will be made to the BOD. As soon as vendor selection is completed, additional information will be posted on our website. Properties will also be undertaking many new tasks including helping determine HOA liability on common (party) walls shared with residents, parking lot lighting and other energy saving initiatives. We are looking for new members to help with these tasks or residents who have some expertise who only want to help on specific projects.

They are located on the pages such as the Board meeting calendar on the Board page, the classes in the AFC on the AFC page, events occurring in the Library or Café located on their pages. Bulletin Board: We now have a digital bulletin board. From the News & Info section you can go to the Bulletin Board and see what treasures your neighbors have posted. Want to post something? Go to the Post Here portion of that page, fill out the form and we’ll have the item posted for you. Need to rent your home? You can post homes for rent on the website now. Go to the About SCOV page, Home & Realtor and then Rentals. Click on the SCOV Residents. Post your rental property here and fill out the form. Once you’ve been verified as a SCOV resident, the rental will be posted. More features will be discussed in the next issue, but there’s nothing stopping you from getting in there and exploring the features for yourself. Enjoy!

psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 917-8077 Thankfulness
When we live in such a wonderful community and have such great weather, we should be giving thanks every day and not just one day in November. But holidays always bring to mind our families and friends. I go back to Illinois to cook Thanksgiving dinner for my family and enjoy every minute I spend with all of them. Some of us have made our SCOV friends our families since such great friendships are formed here. Whatever the case, enjoy. Always remember to be thankful for what you have and not for what you want in life. Community Services - Katy Mosier
Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center 917-8058 kmosier@suncityorovalley.com Friends of the Library The Friends of the Library board is looking forward to an active and exciting year. Thanks to the creative mind of our wonderful librarian, the generosity of the ILR, your individual donations, countless hours of work by volunteers and our own fundraising, we are in full swing with the new computerized system. Currently, we are searching for writers to speak at our annual Book and Authors Luncheon in March, and have a verbal agreement with one of them already. We know how you all look forward to that event, and we will do our utmost to provide interesting guests. Thanks for your support. SCOV Library - Kate Cusumano

It’s exciting to see our seasonal residents arrive for the season. Remember that we take donations of recent magazines, no more than three months old for monthlies, or four weeks old for weeklies. Magazines are circulated on the honor system. Please take no more than three at a time, and return them as soon as you are finished. Exciting new books include Michael Connelly’s The Crossing (arriving November 3), and Nicholas Sparks’ latest release, See Me. Thanks to a generous gift from ILR, we have a wonderful new selection of large print books, audio books and documentary films. Among the new titles are The Roosevelts and The West (directed by Ken Burns), both in DVD. Search our online catalog for other new titles at our website address above. Now that overseeding has been completed and the course has been marked, we are ready for another great season. Just a reminder that the driving range is open to the public and range balls are now $5 for a small basket (approximately 25 balls) and $7 for a large basket (approximately 50 balls). The other option is to buy a range card. Please see the staff in the Pro Shop for more details. Lessons are available from Rick Sample or me. We are both PGA members, and our rates are $45 for ½ hour and $55 for 45 minutes. We also offer packages, so call us for more information 825-3110. Please stop by the new Pro Shop when it opens and check out our merchandise. We will be ordering new merchandise as we see how much space we will have for displays. Thank you for your patience during this transition period. Residents will receive 15% off their purchase, and pass holders will receive 30% off. This excludes sale items, clubs and balls. Walkers, please abide by the walking signs that are provided for you on the golf course. We want you to enjoy the beautiful scenery and at the same time be careful that you do not get hit by a golf ball. The Pro Shop will be closed at 2 PM on Thanksgiving Day. scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063
November is the time when the golf course has dried out from the overseeding water, and golf carts are once again allowed on the turf. Over the years there has been confusion on the way golfers should drive when leaving the cart paths, so this year we will try a new system to direct traffic. Golfers are supposed to follow the 90-degree rule by entering the hole from the cart path at a 90-degree angle toward their ball and then return to the cart path at the same trajectory. However, golfers started doing their own 90degree rule by entering the fairway correctly, but when leaving the fairway they would drive down the edge of the rough to their next shot instead of going back to the cart path. This traffic pattern leads to the roughs getting trampled down when the Bermuda grass goes dormant and can’t recover. This year there will be stakes placed at the beginning and the ending of each hole to designate the entering and exiting points for golf cart traffic. Each day these stakes will be moved so the traffic pattern will be dispersed across a larger area to reduce the traffic wear. Once the golf carts leave the cart path through the gates, they will drive straight to the fairways and then stay in the fairway until they exit the gates on the other end back to the cart path. Hopefully, this will reduce the trampling of the roughs and improve playing conditions during the winter.

Chef Benjamin Hoffman has a love and appreciation for cooking great meals that make people happy. From a very young age, food and family were very important to him. The process of preparing a meal that brought people joy, hooked him. He started cooking professionally at age 16, working his way around local cafés and pizzerias. Chef Ben found that his love of cooking was also a love for the whole

restaurant operation: the guests, the staff, the properties themselves, were becoming a part of his family. He moved on from smaller restaurants in high school to working as Kitchen Manager of O’Malley’s on 4th Avenue. As Kitchen Manager, Benjamin was able to gain knowledge and the ability he was going to need for his next venture. Excited to see how things worked on the other side of the country, Benjamin moved to the Florida Keys to seek a job as a chef and learn more about his craft. After waiting tables and cooking part-time he had his first break as Head Chef of Cabana Breezes in Key Colony Beach, Marathon, Florida. His appreciation for fresh sustainable food grew, and there was no turning back. After a few years he returned to Tucson where he has had the pleasure of working and managing fine establishments such as: North Italian, Fini’s Landing, and most recently the Westward Look Grand Resort and Spa. Benjamin continues to participate in local chef competitions such as Tucson Salsa and Tequila challenge hosted by SACCA where he has taken home three different trophies for his creations. In addition to music, and carpentry, cooking is what Chef Benjamin plans to do until his body will not let him anymore… and maybe even after that. The Café is offering you a chance to win a free breakfast or lunch if you turn in a comment card. Monthly comment cards are randomly drawn for the free meal. The September winners are Laurie Shull, Eleanor Lumish, Wally Otterson, Janet Szumlas and Mary Elizabeth Lee. Congratulations and bon appétit.

Fine Arts Studio Pres. Mellanie Herbert 825-2258 Wednesday, 9 AM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio
Our seasonal resident artists have returned to the comfortable, sociable, creative confines of our studio, and conversations abound regarding summer projects, both here and at winter studios. Our art show themes are determined this month, and these tend to drive our direction and purpose. However, subject matter chosen, we artists just enjoy painting pieces we enjoy. Art appreciation is at the discretion of the viewer but it must be pleasing to its creator first. So we paint on, in our merry way, with coffee cups close by and goodies alongside, discussing art happenings in our Southwest and constructively critiquing each others’ works. We look forward to this morning each week, knowing we’ll paint alongside our friends and fellow artists. If this sounds like an activity you’d enjoy, please stop in on Wednesday mornings and we’ll give you a tour of our passion.
Welcome back artists. November 12 plan to bring a lunch. We will take a break at 11:30 AM and get to know each other better. Several artists will then stay until 1 or 2 PM. Mark your calendar and join us.

Fall is full on and most of the summer travelers have returned to their winter quarters. A rolling welcome back has occurred with classes, demonstrations and ongoing orientations as well as gatherings with food and conversation. Even the cleaning days conclude with visiting and treats to share. Over all, is the joy of watching members grow in their knowledge and abilities. Pots are getting taller and bowls larger, while more elaborate hand-built pieces are appearing with regularity. A great big thanks to all the members who picked up extra work to keep the club running smoothly during the summer months. In 1990, a small group interested in genealogy began breathing life into a new club. The actual club inception was 1991. It was an exciting time. How could we get organized? How could we share our ideas for researching? All of that was before there was much available on the new Internet. Nels Sulouff, our first president, will share a little past history with us. Our knowledgeable speaker, Pam Ingermanson, presents FamilySearch Wiki on November 10. The FamilySearch Wiki is about finding records that may have been generated about your ancestors and the places in which the records might be found.

Two years ago we welcomed our two terrific instructors. Now they are familiar with us and our requirements and their aim is to make each class participant, regardless of exercise level, adept in achieving maximum core strength. They stress the importance of strong abdominal muscles plus all of the additional core muscles which help stabilize our spine and pelvis. Core muscles run the entire length of your torso. All can be strengthened with simple Pilates exercises. Low impact warm-up exercises include stretching and deep breathing to prepare for the strengthening exercises. Both instructors will modify the most strenuous exercises for anyone with limitations. Group mat classes can result in benefits that can’t be beat: better balance (less falls), more flexibility (joints move again), more muscle tone, increased energy and well being. Please join us or come watch a class. Cost is $8/class and annual club dues $20 pp. Call Mary Ayers. Pinochle

Improve your balance, flexibility and strength with Tai Chi. Most of us think of Tai Chi as a way to prevent falls, improve breathing and reduce stress, but it is so much more. A Harvard Medical School health publication stated that Tai Chi is medication in motion and research by Tufts University School of Medicine credits Tai Chi with decreased pain, improved sleep and mood and better quality of life. Our instructors, Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich, stress the use of Tai Chi in daily life. Club officers welcome your inquiries for more information. Newcomers, to register for class contact Peggy Lombard. Tennis

Sun City Strummers meet every Tuesday morning to learn and play ukulele. It would be a good time to start learning to play if you have an interest in a bit of challenging fun with a fairly easy instrument and a nice group of people. You are welcome to stop by to sit in on a class and see what it’s all about. We can lend you a ukulele and we have a very nice Beginners Coach to help get you up to speed. Thursday, December 17, is our annual Christmas sing-along, in the Activity Center Kachina Lounge, so watch for details. Unit Parties

No lightning or thunder and as long as we are in the pool what does it matter? Of course we didn’t play using umbrellas, but we did have a good laugh trying to hit the ball while holding one. Club members, look for an email flyer regarding our annual meeting and Christmas Party to be held on Saturday, December 12, Desert Oasis. The menu is extra special this year and again catered by our Café. Dues are $5 for 2016 and will be collected at that time; cash only. We are all looking forward to our seasonal residents, who have started flying back to their Sun City nests. Come out and give Water Volleyball and/or Wallyball a try.

It is fair to say that our members derive lots of joy and satisfaction from what they are able to do in the woodshop. It is also fair to say that woodworking machines are inherently dangerous, and joy and satisfaction can be wiped out in an instant due to inattention, taking chances and a lack of knowledge. There are some pages in our website that can help out with the knowledge part. A review of the Shop Safety scovwoodworkingclub.com/safety.html and Shop Rules and Procedures scovwoodworkingclub.com/shop-rules-and-procedures.html pages from time-to-time is worthwhile. Also, reviewing the owner’s manuals of the machines you use is a very good idea too. They can be accessed via Our Woodworking Machines page scovwoodworkingclub.com/equipment.html in the website, or a monitor can provide a copy to read in the shop. Be sure to see page 4 of this issue for an article about the club and woodshop.
