General Manager - Bob Mariani

Future of SCOV Housing

From The Board of Directors

Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You I by Cathy Hartrich

How fortunate we are to be living here in SCOV. Wherever you turn there are signs of the attention, caring and professionalism of our staff and employees. And this abundance of beauty, freshness, cleanliness and order is not by accident. Whether you’re looking at the manicured grounds that Mary Cunningham and her staff maintain; or our magnificent golf course that ranks right at the top of local courses that Michael Knopf and his staff cultivate so that Kim Griggs and her staff can conduct a smooth golfing experience or use of any of our many facilities which Ken Sandrock and his crew preserve; we are fortunate to have such outstanding people working on our behalf. And that’s just what we see. How about all the behind-the-scenes operations that keep SCOV running like a well-oiled machine; like Randy Trenary and the financially-efficient department he runs; or Coco Sullivan who makes sure the myriad of requests for space is accommodated or the enjoyable programming in our own backyard which Pam Sarpalius brings to us so that we don’t have to trek downtown for some great entertainment? Kate Cusumano has done an awesome job of stocking our library which brings many hours of enjoyment for all; Katie Mosier has done an amazing job with the ARC in guiding us through the many obstacles of our Development Standards and Community Service requirements which is not an easy chore. Robin Coulter and her staff make the experience of entering our doors a rewarding one, and Robin is tiredlessly working on many projects like our new website which will be the window to our special SCOV home. It couldn’t be more exciting with the anticipation of our new Views Bistro than to have Chris Sapp at the helm. He and his staff have turned our Café into a welcoming and delicious spot. Leif Wolcott is making it delightfully possible to have all our events successfully catered by our Food & Beverage staff. Julie Forester makes sure that all our employees love working here. Thanks to Chris Richard for our award winning Tipster you’re reading right now. And thanks to the rest of our Support Team. And at the helm of this amazing ship is Bob Mariani who, in the end, is responsible for it all. We couldn’t be more fortunate. So maybe we, the residents, could work a little harder for a kinder, more gentler community and remember the lesson of the AFC: Can you live with it?

Sun City Oro Valley is closing in on its 30-year anniversary. Over this three-decade span of time, there has been little thought about what may occur as some homes become sufficiently deteriorated to warrant total reconstruction. Limits of dwelling expansion; demand for different architecture; possible future needs for multi-generational housing; etc. have also had minimal attention. Up to now, the above noted issues have been of little or no concern as there’s been little or no demand for these various changes or need to focus on possible major alteration to the SCOV housing. Due to the thought that some, if not all, of these possible housing modifications may need to be faced at some point, the Board has established as one of its goals to initiate a long-term review concerning the future of our housing stock. In-depth discussion regarding this goal has not occurred yet. However, the foresight to begin thinking about it before critical needs arise is very wise. Other communities that are 40, 50 or more years of age have experienced some of these issues without plans, resulting in very difficult circumstances. For example, a number of communities similar to SCOV have had to deal with homes that have become dilapidated which required complete reconstruction. Due to a lack of planning, difficult questions had to be answered at the last minute such as: Do we require the same type of structure to replace the one that was demolished? Do we allow a different type of architecture? Do we allow two lots to be combined so that one larger home can be built on the lots? Should we allow “mother-in-law quarters additions?” The above noted questions are just a few of the issues that will need to be addressed at some point. The ideal situation is to begin membership discussion to determine what is desired for the future of SCOV housing now, rather than later. No matter what plans are in place, it’s probable that disagreements about what will or won’t be allowed will take place. However, establishing a strategic plan for future housing will greatly assist members to know what to expect in the future.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle... Rack up some fun!

Everyone into pool at the SCOV Billiards Club By Jim Mitchell

You won’t find the pressure of “Fast Eddie” Felson playing Minnesota Fats in the film, The Hustler, but you will find a lot of fun playing pool with the 42 members of the SCOV Billiards Club. That said, one of the newer club members, Jim Lilja, used to go up against much older billiards legend, Willie Mosconi, in New York City. Club president, Bob Hefner, hadn’t played much pool until joining the club a couple of years ago. He explains, “I’d go down in the mornings to practice before getting up the nerve to play with the club in the afternoons.” Club members have the billiards room reserved Mondays through Fridays, noon to 4 PM year-round. Play is open to all residents during all other hours the Catalina Vista complex is open. Each day, members can sign in to play a round-robin format of three games at a time, typically a variation of 8-ball called 1-15 in which the 1-ball has to go in the left side pocket and the 15 in the right side pocket. “It’s a game of strategy,” Bob explains, “to set up balls so your partner can make a play or keep your opponents from making one. Some ask their partner, ’Do you want to sink this ball or win this game?’” Members also play 9-ball, rotation and sometimes a three-player game called cutthroat in which each player is assigned balls 1-5, 6-10 and 11-15 respectively. The object is to pocket the other two players’ balls before they sink yours. Club champion and VP, Mike Connoy, has played pool since he was a kid. He joined because he Billiards club president Bob Hefner lines up says, “I didn’t want to Photo by Jim Mitchell. go to bars because, you have to drive 10 miles, and the tables and cues aren’t as good. This is really a nice group of people, and it’s virtually free.” The club championship tournament is voluntary and held in April. There’s no fee to enter. The annual champion is the first to win seven games of both 8-ball and 9-ball against the runner-up. It’s a double-elimination format with each shot called.

Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

During high season, there are 8-ball tourneys each month. A maximum of 16 players play with partners, and the tournament winner is the one winning the most games in the rotation. Tournament director, Jerry Cohen, scrambles pairings so talent levels are fairly equalized and players don’t typically play the same person twice. Club treasurer, John Tiedje, recalls, “My Dad owned a billiards parlor in Iowa when I was growing up, and I used to play pool in college, but gave up the game for years. I got into the club a couple of years ago and it’s absolutely fun.” The Billiards Room features top-of-the-line equipment throughout. The four tables have high-quality simonis felt speed cloth and high-density rubber rails. A wide selection of house cues is always available and in great condition, thanks to member Jay Witala, who replaces and maintains cue tips.

a shot while vice president and club champion, Mike Connoy, looks on. The club holds an annual meeting to elect officers each spring. They also have a pizza party around Christmas. You can sign up to join the club by putting a check for $10 made out to SCOV Billiards Club in an envelope in the Billiards Room. Dues are good for the calendar year. “We’re always looking for new members,” Bob Hefner explains. “Just go down and sign in to rotate in and out of games.”

The AFC would like to welcome all of our returning residents. We hope you had a very fun and healthy summer. It is that time of the year where the demand for the equipment at the Fitness Center, and pool usage will increase. There will be peak times during the day, usually early mornings. All swimming lanes are to be shared. Whether you are swimming or walking, you are to sign in, for up to 45 minutes. It is most efficient when swimmers share with swimmers and walkers do the same with other walkers. When utilizing the equipment in the AFC, cardio equipment has a 30-minute usage-time limit. Avoid relaxing or having a conversation while seated on a piece of the strength equipment. By following these guidelines, all residents will be ensured of wonderful fitness experience. Chair Lou Gard 520-825-4773 lougard@q.com Second and Fourth Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3

Most of the submittals to the ARC are clear as to intent and laid out so the ARC member following up understands what the resident wants to do. However, we get some that do not make it clear exactly what the resident wants to accomplish. Some come in with hen-scratching descriptions that are barely legible. On the plot plan, they draw additional lines and arrows pointing to areas that the resident wants to change or add something: a wall, fence, gate, patio, window replacement, room addition, etc. If you want to add a fence or a wall and butt up against an existing wall or fence, make sure you know who owns that wall. Please take the time to describe the changes you want to make. If the plot plan is one of those that is all marked up, take the time to draw a plot plan on a blank piece of paper. Describe the changes you want to make and use a highlighter over the area you want to change. Some plot plans have previous changes drawn on them making it difficult for new descriptions of changes to be legible. The ARC member should not have to try and decipher what the resident wants to accomplish. Include the dimensions of any changes you want to make. Do colors match existing walls or house colors? Whenever possible include brochures or pictures from vendors. The more information you provide, the easier it is to understand what you are trying to accomplish. Consumer Referral

Marketing continues work through three sub-committees. The HOA Home Values sub-committee is planning a remodeling forum Saturday, February 13, to help residents who are considering remodeling their homes. They also have developed a roll-out and resident-training plan for the new SCOV website and a public relations plan for the grand opening of the new Views Pro Shop. The Café sub-committee is developing a marketing plan for the grand opening of the new Café/Lounge and one to promote the catering and banquet capabilities of the Café. The Golf marketing sub-committee has developed a plan to promote The Views, including a Club Fair event to promote golf pass sales, men’s and women’s golf club membership, group and individual lessons and other amenities. The event is tentatively planned for January when a majority of seasonal residents return. Neighborhood Pride

Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3 Just Perhaps...

Just perhaps you didn’t know, or you forgot, how much things grow here in our desert. The monsoon season this year caused trees, grasses, shrubs, and weeds to really grow. Pre-emergence applied to your yard will stop the germination of seeds, and you won’t have as many weeds next year; check with your landscaper or pest control professional. Don’t forget to remove weeds in cracks of your driveway, sidewalk and where the cement meets the blacktop of the street. Plants protruding over sidewalks need to be trimmed back so as not to injure passing walkers. Trees at corners need to be trimmed so stop signs may be seen. Suckers under trees should be cut off, down to the ground. Take a close look from the street. Can you see the numbers on your house, day and night? For safety’s sake, trim back any plant, or change light bulbs, if your house number is not clearly visible. This is important should an emergency vehicle need to find you. Welcome, and please continue to take pride in your property. Properties

Chair Ed Zwerling 631-741-9934 edscov@yahoo.com Meets Third Thursday, 9 AM, WC1

Posse

Chair Bob Hefner 825-4825 rjh1458@gmail.com First Tuesday, 3 PM, Catalina Vista scovaz.com/committees/posse/

SCOV is one of the most desirable and safest retirement communities in Arizona. It is a desirable community for many reasons, one of which is that it is safe. This is due, in large part, because of one of the finest police departments in the country, the OVPD (Oro Valley Police Department) and the SCOV Posse. OVPD is in partnership with a dedicated group of SCOV residents who volunteer a few hours of their time several times a year as members of your SCOV Posse. We invite you to become a Posse volunteer. It’s an easy yet effective way to serve your community. To learn how to join the Posse or to obtain more information, call Posse Chair Bob Hefner. You are also welcome to attend any of the Posse Committee’s meetings. Tipster Editorial

Successful Tour Program

Potential residents have been taking note of Sun City Oro Valley. At the end of fiscal year 2014-2015, 374 tours had been taken from folks from all over the country. Our most excellent volunteer Ambassadors have shared with our potential residents, a message that life in SCOV is, “More than Living, It’s a Lifestyle!” This message has been reviewed by staff and our Marketing Committee to assure that it lines up with our Marketing Plan, and it does. The Ambassadors, under excellent resident leadership embrace the message and enthusiastically share it with each potential resident. Our staff has provided outstanding coordination of volunteer Ambassadors and setting up tours, and keeping our e-car, SCOV1, in excellent working condition. Our residents get in on the tour as well by providing friendly information wherever our potential resident has been taken. The beauty of this process is that there is no high-pressure sales pitch; it’s our residents sharing their passion for life in SCOV and it’s contagious. There were 213 homes sold last fiscal year which is the second highest ever on record. So the next time you have friends in town, sign them up. Tell your friends back home how much you enjoy life in SCOV (this is especially effective during a snowstorm back there). Help them enjoy this active adult lifestyle here in Sun City Oro Valley. One last note…if you’re a renter (or have renters) this is also for you.

Fall

I tell my family and friends in Illinois that, because of the great weather year round here, I only know it’s fall when Starbucks starts selling pumpkin lattes. As many parts of the country are preparing for colder weather and tuning up their snow blowers, we know our weather will allow for many outdoor activities here in SCOV, Oro Valley and Tucson. There will be a great fall and winter lineup of programs for all to enjoy. Take advantage of professional entertainment in your very own community. No need to drive far and pay to park and pay high ticket prices. Remember October means that winter pool hours are in effect through March. Community Services - Katy Mosier

Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center 917-8058 kmosier@suncityorovalley.com Inspections of Your Home

Several people in our community will take advantage of this time of year to list their homes in hopes of a sale. Perhaps they are thinking of moving to a different SCOV house or else moving closer to their families in other states. If you are listing your home, please contact the Community Services Coordinator, Katy Mosier, kmosier@suncityorovalley.com or 520-917-8058 and she will contact a member of the ACT (Architectural Compliance Team.) That member will contact you for an appointment to review the exterior of your home with you so that you understand any deficiencies that need to be addressed. This mandatory ACT Listing Inspection will give you a chance to correct any Association governing document violations before a sale. Once you have corrected any issues, you may arrange a re-inspection prior to an escrow so that your home’s exterior has a clean bill of health. If you are just curious whether your home meets the requirements of the Development Standards and the CC&Rs, please arrange an ACT Courtesy Pre-inspection. Whatever information is gathered at this time is given to you and is not shared with the Association. It is up to you whether you act on any deficiency. The good news is that, at least, you become aware of what is acceptable or not so that you can be proactive if you decide to sell your home in the future or just want to bring it up to snuff. Friends of the Library The Friends of the Library board is looking forward to an active and exciting year. Thanks to the creative mind of our wonderful librarian, the generosity of the ILR, your individual donations, countless hours of work by volunteers, and our own fundraising, we are in full swing with the new computerized system. We currently are on the search for writers to speak at our annual Book and Authors Luncheon in March, and have a verbal agreement with one of them already. We know how you all look forward to that event, and we will do our utmost to provide interesting guests. Thanks for your support in making our Library the number one amenity in SCOV.

Proper hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent colds and flu. And it’s easy to do. Start with warm water and your anti-bacterial soap. Work the lather for 20 seconds, paying extra attention to fingernails and jewelry. Singing Happy Birthday twice is a good way to judge the time. Then rinse and dry your hands. Disposable towels are best so you can use them to turn off the water. This will protect you from putting germs from the faucet right back on your hands. Another easy way to protect yourself is to keep your hands away from your face. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. These are the areas where cold viruses gain entry into your system. Keeping your hands away from your face will keep any cold germs on them away as well. If you need to touch these areas, wash your hands before and after.

Golf

Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs

theviewsgolfclub.com Welcome back everyone. We hope you had a great summer and are ready for another fun season at The Views Golf Club. The staff is certainly ready for another busy year and we are eager to serve our annual pass holders and residents to the very best of our ability. The Golf Now website program continues to be a success as does inviting outside groups to experience our spectacular golf course. These groups will be booked around our annual pass holder times as much as possible. Please remember that pass holders do have a nine day advanced booking option. The golf course is currently closed for overseeding through Sunday, October 11. We will re-open on Monday, October 12. We will be cart path only until Saturday, October 31. Our schedule will be as follows when we open back up from overseeding: Tee Time days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday) will begin at 7 AM, Tuesday’s Shotgun will begin at 11:30 AM and will include The 18-Hole Ladies Club and limited open play, so pass holder’s please take advantage of your advance booking option on this day. Wednesdays Shotgun will be at 8 AM and will include the 18-Hole Men’s Club and limited open play followed by a 12:30 PM Shotgun. Thursday’s Shotguns will be 8 AM (9-Hole clubs only) and 11 AM open play. For those of you who choose to walk and or ride the course during the closed period or anytime in October, please remember that all traffic, pedestrian or vehicular, must remain on the cart paths. This is to protect our immature grass. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. When we open back up for play, please ensure that you abide by the walking signs that are posted for your convenience. If you are an evening rider or walker, keep in mind that you cannot enter the golf course until 5 PM, and even then, you will be sharing the facility with golfers. So please be cautious and courteous. Superintendent - Michael Kropf October is the start of a new season of golf. The golf course has been overseeded so there are different colors of green on the fairways, tees and greens. This is a good time to remind golfers about changes from summer to winter play. The divot mix will be replaced with a sand and seed mix that is to only be used on fairways and tees that have been overseeded. This year holes #2 and 6 will not be overseeded, as well as the blue tees so please don’t put seed in divots on those areas. The seed will germinate during the winter and when the Bermuda grass goes dormant the germinated seed mix will leave green spots all over the fairways and tees. This also applies to all of the roughs since they aren’t overseeded either. This helps reduce extra maintenance required to chemically treat and remove the green spots. Another reminder is the course will be very wet following overseeding. Even though the water is slowly turned off prior to the course reopening the soil will be very saturated. Golf carts will be regulated to the cart paths until the end of October to allow the fairways extra time to firm. Please try to keep all four tires on the cart path. It will not take long for damage to occur when golf carts are driven with two of the wheels in the grass especially, around the greens where the overseeded aprons are close to the cart path edge.

You Should Go to the SCOV Arts & Crafts Festival by Paul Mercer

Unless you just moved here, you probably know about the annual SCOV Arts & Crafts Festival coming Saturday, October 24, 9 AM-4 PM, Activity Center. It is the largest show of the year here at SCOV. The resident exhibitors have been working on their art for a considerable amount of time. They are proud to show off and sell their pieces to the public and SCOV residents alike. Make sure you have plenty of time to peruse the goods and find deals. Jane Fairchild will be there with her Fiber Flings, Jane’s own unique concept to brighten up your look. They are made from lightweight yarns and finished with coordinated beads and an easy magnetic clasp. Stop by and ask Jane how she came up with making these clever and useful fashion accessories. Jane Fairchild Marie Gagnon will also be there displaying her functional pottery. She fires all year and uses the Gift Shop to display and sell her work, an arrangement she finds personally fulfilling. She also has worked in oil paintings, watercolors and pencil drawings. You can use her work for display or as a serving piece. Rose Young starts with copper, Marie Gagnon brass or German silver and then makes earrings, bracelets and necklaces incorporating metal, glass, found treasures and other items. She says that the metal finished may be etched or weathered before being riveted, hammered and soldered into statement jewelry that is Rose Young tribal, western, dressy, fun and funky. One thing for sure, Rose’s pieces are unique and you will enjoy wearing them. Barbara Gioioso is a designer who trained at the Rhode Island School of Design. As coowner of a interior design company before moving here, Barbara brings plenty of experience to her latest efforts designing jewelry offered at the Gift Shop. She sets colorful stones in silver using the lost wax process. “Whether I’m designing a family room or jewelry for the Barbara Gioioso mother or a grandmother of a family, the basics of good design are the same.”

Novel by SCOV Author Makes Amazon Top Seller List

Dick Jacobs’ novel about a plot to kill the President of the United States and pin the assassination on an innocent bystander has become an Amazon best seller. Our new season is underway. All residents are invited to join us October 7 when we will begin discussion of Parent and Child (ISBN 1-880323-76-1), a collection of noteworthy ancient and modern literature by Euripides, Faulkner, Kafka, W.B. Then, on October 21, Elise Asch will lead discussion of Gwen and Somewhere, Belgium, both by Jamaica Kincaid. Looking ahead, in early 2016 we will begin reading Imperfect Ideal: Utopian and Dystopian Visions (ISBN 978-1-939014-20-7), an exciting collection of modern and ancient literature by Rachel Carson, Vladimir Lenin, Oscar Wilde, Saint Augustine, Aristotle, Dostoevsky, Homer, Thomas More and 15 other significant thinkers concerned with the good and the bad that can result from various attempts to build perfect societies. No dues during 2015-2016.

SCOV Book Club Jane Fairchild 520-909-5069 janemail11@yahoo.com First Monday, 1:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

At our October meeting we will discuss The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. A. J. Fikry’s life is not at all what he expected it to be. He lives alone, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. But when a mysterious package appears at the bookstore, its unexpected arrival gives Fikry the chance to make his life over and see everything anew. At our November meeting we will discuss Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. In Being Mortal, bestselling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

A dedicated core of members organized cleaning efforts to keep our play room healthy and ended them with informal social gatherings, including a late Monsoon Happy Hour for all. As our seasonal members began to return, our new series of classes formally started and ideas for new projects abound. A special thank you to the teams who carried the on work that makes our club strong. In addition to the cleaning group, social organizers and orientation team, the kiln and glaze workers have kept the ware safely flowing, while the officers kept communication and budget on track, brought in supplies and arranged maintenance work in the studio. Fall is finally here and it’s time to think about avoiding the stress of the holidays by exercising. Twice a week we have a professional instructor come to SCOV and teach a Joseph Pilates mat class. These Pilates workouts affect our entire system of bones and joints and are not just sets of simple exercises. Your abdominal muscles, arms, back, hips and more are strengthened and toned. This allows for better posture, flexibility, strength and balance. The classes are one-hour total body workouts and include many warm-up stretches. Because these are Pilates mat classes for seniors, all exercise movements can be modified for different levels of performance. Our instructors can be very helpful with this. The cost is only $8/class and the annual club dues are $20 pp. Please stop by and watch one of our classes. Call Mary. Pinochle

Poetry need not depend on the use of unusual words. It’s the way they’re put together that refreshes or changes our perception of the way things are or seem. Alice Walker’s

poem “To the Man in the Yellow Terry” provides several examples beginning with the opening lines: “Dawn came at six today/ Held back by hope/ A lost cause—/ Melted like snow/ In the middle of/ The day.” She goes on to describe “old promises” rising up as “honored ghosts”, a mind “stopped like a clock struck by the treachery of time” and “The sky blue, empty, unfathomable—as I am.” Surprisingly, perhaps ironically, she describes herself as “the wren who does not sing” and says “I take my simple/ Flight/ Silent, unmetaphoric/ Dressed in brown.” At the Poets Corner we learn from reading published poets and from sharing our own, encouraging, discussing what works well and suggesting modifications. We are often asked how one can join the Woodworking Club. The answer is first take the required ten hours of safety and equipment operation training. This can be done by watching all the videos on a set of DVDs that can be checked out from the SCOV Library or by attending in-shop classes that are held periodically. Then, after a shop checkout by a club officer and paying the $20 annual dues, you’ll be a club member and can be approved to operate the equipment. If one is an experienced woodworker, some or all of the training can be waived. The club welcomes residents of all skill levels. No experience necessary. So, come by the shop and talk with a monitor or any of our members to get started. Lots of information is also available on our website. Many of our seasonal resident members have returned. Welcome back.

By graduating 387 students in 2014-2015, YOTO (Youth On Their Own) saved Tucson over $148M. SCOV residents are invited to join us in positively impacting Tucson’s future. SKIN CANCER PREVENTION RESEARCH STUDY The purpose of this research is to analyze changes that occur in skin cells when an emollient cream (moisturizer) is applied to sun damaged skin and actinic keratosis twice a day for a period of 3 months. Actinic keratoses (also called AK or pre-cancers) are small, rough scaly spots that do not go away; physicians often freeze these areas with liquid nitrogen. It takes 5 months to complete the study, with 4 or 5 study visits. The test areas are either the forearms or the scalp. Participants are randomized into one of two groups; one group applies only the emollient cream provided to them to the test area, and the other group applies no skin product whatsoever to the test area. A total of 5 small skin samples (biopsies) are collected from the test area: 2 at the beginning of the study and 3 at the end. Photos are taken and medical history is reviewed. The study is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and conducted by the University of Arizona Cancer Center. An Institutional Review Board responsible for human subjects research at The University of Arizona reviewed this research project and found it to be acceptable, according to applicable state and federal regulations and University policies designed to protect the rights and welfare of participants in research. Compensation will be provided to qualified study participants. For more information please call the Study Coordinator at 321-7747.
