From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors debra@myfastmail.com Staff Transitions by Debra Arrett You will spot a few new faces among staff. General Manager, Mark Wade, begins on December 5. He comes to us from Leisure World in Mesa, Arizona, and has successfully managed large-scale communities for the past 17 years. His style is MBWA: management by walking around. He and his wife, Sheryl, hope to join a club or two each year. Mark knows that club members will let him know what is working in our community and what areas need improvement. In November Aalt Brouwer became our Food & Beverage Director. Aalt developed his passion for the field at a young age starting out as a busser and dishwasher. He was 19 when he held his first management position. Later he changed his college focus and studied hospitality at Northern Arizona University and NHTV in the Netherlands. With his vast experience and education, he comes to us with many ideas to improve the service, quality of food and the bottom line. In October Marsha Dean became our Communications Coordinator. She was previously a Publications Manager at the University of Arizona and is well prepared to keep the Tipster coming to us each month. Marsha enjoys interacting with residents and looks forward to meeting more. Marsha replaced Chris Richard who retired in September after eight years. Immediately after retiring, Chris had knee replacement surgery and is recovering nicely. We must also bid farewell to General Manager Bob Mariani. He too was with us eight years and held the position longer than any of his predecessors. That speaks volumes about his job performance. Bob is not retiring; he is changing careers and will become a realtor. He will no doubt be listing and selling homes in SCOV. The new staff members will need time to learn the ropes. Please introduce yourself and welcome them to SCOV. If you run into Bob Mariani, thank him for his many years of service and wish him well in his new career.

General Manager - Bob Mariani bmariani@suncityorovalley.com 917-8080 A Fond Farewell In 2008 I responded to a notice for the general managerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s position at what was Sun City Vistoso at that time. After a phone interview, I was invited to participate in an on-site interview. When my wife, Polly, and I drove into the area, we both had a very positive and comfortable feeling. After the interview process was concluded, that feeling continued. Added to our thought that we had found a great place to live was an offer to fill the GM position. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now a little more than eight years after our initial trip to Oro Valley and my acceptance of the offer to serve as your general manager. When I look back through those years, I am amazed at the accomplishments. Projects ranging from the recently-completed restaurant and Pro Shop to the beautiful AFC facility are here for your daily enjoyment. A marketing program and budget were implemented that have brought significant attention to what is now Sun City Oro Valley. Along with those changes came new building and room names. Public golf was introduced, generating a few hundred thousand dollars in revenue. The governing documents from Board policies to the bylaws and master declaration were updated and vastly improved. Many existing common area components such as aging landscaping were recognized and added to the asset reserve fund to assure proper replacement of these items. In addition, a new fund was implemented to best assure proper maintenance of Chalk Creek and other wash areas in SCOV. The projects and accomplishments noted above comprise just a fraction of what has transpired during less than a decade, transforming what has always been a wonderful community to a community that is that much more desirable, relevant and competitive. I am proud that there have been so many changes for the betterment of SCOV during the time I served as your general manager and while I provided leadership for the community. However, I have to admit that I am only one player on a superior team, and I have been incredibly blessed and fortunate to have worked with and for the right people. The Board members, committee members, department managers, overall staff and SCOV membership have been very positive, progressive and supportive of me and of the forward progress that has been made during my tenure. Without all of these wonderful, ambitious, positive and intelligent people working with the same goal in mind, there would be but a fraction of the accomplishments we have been fortunate enough to witness. In closing, I want to thank so many of you for the opportunity to serve you and for providing an environment in which I have and will be able to feel a great deal of accomplishment.

Assistant Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 917-8070 Let the Sun Shine In The new solar systems are all online gathering sunshine and turning it into energy. These systems are expected to generate over 50% of the electricity needed by our SCOV facilities. Now all residents may watch the sunshine convert to kilowatt-hours from data collected on the project’s monitoring system. It is not obvious from looking at the solar arrays in the parking lots and roofs at the main center, but there are five different systems providing energy to the Activity Center, Artisan Center, Restaurant and Pro Shop, Cart Barn, and Welcome Center. There are also systems at Catalina Vista, Desert Oasis and the Golf Maintenance facility. The solar stats can be found on our webpage under the Members/Member Services page in a section titled Solar Stats. So let the sun shine in and watch the energy add up.

Please note facility holiday hours listed below. New changes are happening with the arrival of our new General Manager. As always, the staff is committed to bring you another great year to SCOV. I want to personally thank Janice Strassburg for sewing a cover for the upright piano at the Catalina Vista. She did a great job. Her efforts and the efforts of many of our residents have been wonderful. At times we have called on the woodshop members to help make something for the community, and sometimes residents just come forth to help. All this makes us the great community that we are. Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 917-8058 New Development Standards Revision By now you have read the revised SCOV Development Standards which have just been published. If you have questions about any of the revisions, I encourage you to contact a member of the Architectural Review Committee to get clarification. I would like to take this opportunity to address a landscaping revision. It has been included because of a safety concern voiced by several residents and reviewed for its integrity by members of the ARC. Many shrubs had been planted years ago in close proximity to the driveways of our neighbors. Those same shrubs have grown so that they block the line of sight when the neighbor is exiting his/her driveway. As we back out of our driveways, close calls with other vehicles motoring down our street or with residents out walking have resulted because our vision is blocked. Our new landscaping requirement should help to alleviate this problem. No shrub or planting which significantly obstructs sight lines of persons exiting a driveway in an automobile, golf car or the like, shall be allowed. Such shrubs must be pruned to a height of 42” or less to allow a safe exit. With this new landscaping requirement, we will be safer. Please talk with your neighbors if you are experiencing a blind spot because their shrubbery is blocking your line of sight to the adjacent sidewalk or roadway, and perhaps work together to prune the culprit.

Did you know that there are over 4,200 videos in our collection? Finding the perfect movie is now easier since volunteer Christine Sullivan recently added genres to each record, a project that took almost four months. Whether it’s a romantic comedy you’re looking for, a thriller, documentary, foreign film, or whatever, you can type search terms into our online database and come up with great suggestions. Clicking on Details will open a summary of the movie, names of the actors, the year it was released, and more. Videos added to our collection before the new software was installed will not have as many details, but all will have genres. Please remember to handle our video disks by the outside edges, and remove them gently from their cases, so they can be viewed many times. New this month in books: the latest by David Baldacci, Janet Evanovich, Fannie Flagg, John Sandford, and Alexander McCall Smith.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 917-8073 When Using AFC Exercise Studios If you bring any liquids into the Exercise Studios, the liquids must be in a sealable container and left on the perimeter of the Studios, not in the exercise area. Do not place any drinks on the audio-visual boxes. If you happen to spill the liquid you brought into the Studio, you are responsible to clean it up, and let your neighbor know if they might have accidently spilled something that needs to be cleaned-up. Make sure to check the bottom of your shoes for any rocks that might be stuck in them that might damage the floor.

Our documents do not and legally cannot protect a view even though Del Webb charged a premium for lots with a view. As good neighbors, we can look at what our vegetation does in obstructing a view of the guy next door. Early tract declarations addressed vegetation and walls in some areas as they related to a view. Is there really a difference between a hedge to be maintained at six feet and a shrub to be maintained at six feet? Just a thought.

Election Chair Don Stewart 618-980-3878 Bethsdad81@gmail.com Election 2017 – New Process Over the summer the Election Committee explored offering an online voting option for SCOV elections. As you may recall, they asked the community for thoughts about this option and 275 of you responded. 192 of you said yes; 32 said yes, but had questions. There were 16 who said no and 34 who asked questions. The primary question and concern was protecting the anonymity of the voter. The Election Committee heard you and made this a mandate as they studied the online vote. In September the Board approved the Election Committee’s recommendation to offer an online vote. The company we are using is Vote-Now out of Florida. We will provide them a list of eligible voters and they will send out an online ballot unique for each unit/lot. Each unit/lot will have one vote which they can cast online if they have an email on file with SCOV. If there is no email on file, a paper ballot will be mailed to the address on file. The ballots will be cast by either email or mailed to Vote-Now in Florida. No ballots will be received in the Administrative office, you will mail them to Vote-Now. In addition to offering an online voting option, you will also be able to see the biography of the candidate online. There is also a new format for the forum which is now called an interview. Each candidate will be taped while being interviewed. The video will be posted on our YouTube channel and links sent out in an email blast and TWISCOV. If you’re not online, the interview videos will be shown in one of our rooms in February. The old forum format will also be offered in February. In the March 2016 election 61% of us voted. That’s good participation, but we can do better and have more people vote. The new options will make voting more convenient and it is our hope and goal that more of us will vote. We want everyone to participate.

If you haven’t been to The Views Restaurant and Lounge in the last few weeks, we hope you will come in and take notice of some new changes. In a joint effort with the Food and Beverage Committee, Board Liaison member Meade Davis, President Don Coleman and General Manager Bob Mariani, it was recognized that changes needed to be made. The food was good, but the service was below what our residents deserve. New structure, training and oversight was needed. Quick action was taken. The new Food and Beverage Director, Aalt Brouwer, is a graduate of Northern Arizona University with a degree in Hotel Management. He has a strong background in the food service industry with experience at Marriott Hotels and, most recently, Hotel Congress. A new point of sale system was secured from Board revenues. The old system was outdated and could not keep up with the size of our operation. This new system will ensure faster service in the kitchen and bar. It should assist in the collection of revenues which will help increase our bottom line at year-end. Security in the storage areas has also been increased. Our sincere thanks to Bob Mariani for his strong actions in the last few months. We also want to thank Meade Davis and the Board for making these necessary changes. We hope the residents will see all the positive changes going forward.

Friends of the Library Did you know that all the audio,video and reading materials in our Library are provided by membership in Friends of the Library, fundraisers done by Friends of the Library plus donations of residents and grants procured by our awesome librarian? This year we have three major fundraisers. The month of January is a drive for Friends of the Library membership. February 18 is the biannual Home Tour of renovated Sun City homes, and March 10 is the annual Books and Authors Luncheon. She enjoys seeing people appreciate her work and hearing how their friends and family like receiving handmade cards. Woodworker Roland started making cutting boards for his family, then moved on to small bowls, pepper and salt grinders. He also makes pens, flashlights, wine openers and magnifying glasses from wood and acrylic materials.

These support the Loan Room services. Our third delivery of the fiscal year to the scrapyard was a load of 540 pounds of aluminum cans for which we received $216.00. Why does the Posse patrol SCOV every night? The number one reason is to find open garage doors. Last year we found 947 garage doors up. When we find an open door, we turn on our vehicle’s flashing lights, and then look up your phone number so we can call. If we don’t have the correct number for you or your renters, we must call 911 and get assistance from OVPD. We want your garage doors closed so that you will find your golf clubs and tools still in your garage the following morning, and just as important, you will not find a rattlesnake under your car, where it came in looking for warmth. Safety and security are very important to those who serve on the four Posse Squads in our community. Please volunteer and become a member.

The Properties Committee has completed our biannual inspection. The inspectors looked for safety violations, housekeeping problems and the physical condition of our facilities. We found the general condition to be excellent. Much of this is due to the proactive approach taken by staff to replace roofs and repaint most of the buildings over this past summer. The various clubs have done a commendable job in keeping their areas clean and well organized. There were a few issues identified that need remediation and should be acted on in the near future. All residents are encouraged to express their concerns about our facilities to the Properties Committee, the Board of Directors or staff. The solar generation project has been completed and is now producing electricity and reducing our carbon foot print. See the Assistant Manager’s column on page 5 on how to access real-time statistics related to our solar project. We are always looking for new members. You don’t have

Use Rancho Vistoso Blvd. so that you do not get hit by a golf ball or upset the golfers during their play. Come in and check our new Pro Shop. Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063 December is historically the time of year when the temperatures get cold enough for frost. Now is a good time to go over what kind of damage occurs and the procedures to follow during these cold mornings.

Walking or driving on frosted grass causes damage to green leaf tissue which eventually leads to the grass dying. When the roughs go dormant and turn brown they are no longer susceptible to frost damage, but the overseeded fairways, tees and greens can be damaged. Every cold morning that frost is possible, a message will be left before 6 AM on the frost-delay phone line stating what the conditions are on the course and how those conditions will impact the golfers. Also, there will be a frost message on The Views Golf Club webpage. If the temperature is cold, but the frost is not

that bad we might not have a delay, but the golf carts could be restricted to the cart path for a determined amount of time. If the frost is more severe and requires a delay, it will reflect the earliest time the golf course can be prepared for golf and for play to start. Mowing of the greens and moving the pins needs to be done before golfers can begin play. Additional reminders: the putting green, driving range tee and chipping area all have overseeded grasses, so they will also be closed until the Pro Shop is notified of their opening.

Seasons Greetings from the Views Restaurant. As the holidays approach, we at The Views can’t help but think about family, friends and traditions that have been passed down over the years. My family traditions are ingrained in me as much as the songs we all hear on the radio, from Virginia ham and cranberry salad to the desserts my grandmother made every year in such large quantities that they lasted through the new year. Since the holidays are all about sharing, I thought for my first article I would share a recipe that my grandmother passed down to me years ago. This recipe is one of the reasons I grew a passion for food. I hope you enjoy it. Raisin-Filled Cookies Ingredients 1 cup packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup butter, softened ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg 3 eggs ½ teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons vanilla extract 3 tablespoons buttermilk 5 cups all-purpose flour Filling 1 cup packed brown sugar 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2 cups boiling water 3 tablespoons all-purpose 1½ cup seedless raisins flour Directions 1. In a large bowl, cream sugars and butter. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and nutmeg; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Cover and refrigerate until easy to handle. 2. For filling, in a saucepan combine the cornstarch, flour and brown sugar. Stir in water until smooth. Add raisins. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook and stir for 3 minutes or until thickened. Cool. 3. On a floured surface, roll out dough into 1/8 inch thickness. Cut with floured 3 inch round cookie cutters. Spoon 2 teaspoons filling on top of half the circles and top each with another circle. Pinch edges together and cut slit in top. 4. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 10-13 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool. Yield: about 3½ dozen. This year at The Views, for the first time, we will be offering a beautiful Christmas Eve Dinner. We hope to share our holiday cheer with you over a 5-course dinner paired with 5 cocktails. Each course created by our very talented Chef de Cuisine Steve Shimmin will be complimented by a variety of unique takes on traditional holiday cocktails. This dinner will be limited seating only with two times, at 2 PM and at 6 PM. We will have vegan options available for each course. The price for the 5-course dinner is $45 per person. All residents are invited to join us as we continue discussion of Imperfect Ideal: Utopian and Dystopian Visions, a collection of modern and ancient literature by Dostoevsky, Homer, Lenin, Aristotle, Rachel Carson and 17 other noteworthy thinkers (available from Great Books Foundation). The collection considers ideas about structuring and governing communities for the welfare of their citizens, revealing some of the best and worst aspects of utopian and dystopian visions. On December 7 we will discuss The Machine Stop by E. M. Forster. On December 21 we will discuss The Time Capsule Found on a Dead Planet by Margaret Atwood and a selection from Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. Starting on January 18 we will be reading selections from The Seven Deadly Sins, Even Deadlier, a thought-provoking collection of 14 short story masterpieces. At our December 5 meeting we will discuss: Grand Central: Original Stories of Postwar Love and Reunion by Karen White and Pam Jenoff. Ten best selling authors have written stories that take place in New York’s iconic Grand Central station on a day just after the end of WWII. Thousands of people passed through the station that day, each with a story to tell. Note: Our January meeting will be held Monday, January 9 as the building will be closed on January 2, a federal holiday. The location will be communicated via email in advance of the meeting. January book for discussion: The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. This book is a masterpiece of hope as well as heroism, unrequited love, cruelty and bigotry, as told by Sarah, a black slave in Charleston, given as a birthday gift to her then nine-year old white mistress.

Our schedule is four evenings between December and March. We will be choosing four of the following at our Kick Off Dinner for our dinner themes: Fajita Party, Alaskan, St. Patrick’s, Basque Meal, Little Bites, Host’s State, Hawaiian, Music with some very creative ideas! Each dinner has different participants, determined by the scheduling secretary. Two to four weeks before your dinner, your group gathers with the host(s) to determine a menu within the theme. Winter is here and it’s time to think about avoiding the stress of the holidays by exercising. Twice a week we have a professional instructor come to Sun City and teach a Joseph Pilates mat class. The Pilates exercises work to strengthen your core as well as your entire system of bones and joints and are not just sets of simple exercises. Your abdominal muscles, arms, back, hips and more are strengthened and toned. This allows for better posture, flexibility, strength and balance. The classes are one-hour total body workouts and include many warm-up stretches. Because these are Pilates mat classes for Seniors, all exercise movements can be modified for different levels of performance. Our instructors can be very helpful with this. Wheels for Kids Wheels for Kids is a 50l(c)(3) charity dedicated to providing rehabbed bicycles for kids in need in the Tucson area. Some of our partner organizations are Youth on Their Own, El Grupo, Refugee Focus, and Tucson Boys and Girls Club. Wheels for Kids is a total volunteer effort, and currently, we need mechanics.
