bmariani@suncityorovalley.com 917-8080 Cast Your Vote for Master Declaration and Bylaws

Along with the SCOV dues billing in June, you will receive a ballot for your vote on the amended Master Declaration (CC&Rs) and Bylaws. The Board of Directors and Governing Documents Review Committee urge you to cast your vote and to vote yes. The most common question I hear about the vote on these documents is, “Why are we voting again?” The answer to that question is that the vote in March was only for five issues that were considered substantive. These issues were put to a separate vote, as it was thought they may be controversial enough to cause the June vote on the overall documents to fail. As it turned out the five proposed amendments were all approved and have been incorporated in the Master Declaration and Bylaws that you will vote on in June. Subsequent to the June vote two forums were held in April in order to explain the proposed changes to the governing documents. These changes are recommended in order to assure that the documents comply with the current law, are more user friendly, reflect the manner in which the Association operates and reflect that the developer is no longer involved in our self-managed association. Unlike most forums, these events were poorly attended, which either means that the membership is ambivalent about the issues or already understand and agree with the proposed changes. Hopefully, the latter thought is accurate and there will be overwhelming support for the work that the Governing Documents Review Committee has undertaken for the past three years. In summary, please be sure to pull the ballot, ballot envelope and return envelope out of the packet of information you receive in June. Complete your ballot with an approve vote, enter your information as requested on your return envelope and mail or drop off your ballot.

rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 917-8070 Estate Sales in SCOV

Although the Association does not allow for garage sales, there is a provision for an estate sale in the instance of death or incapacitation. There are guidelines to conduct an estate sale which may be obtained from our website (Members Services, For Your Homes, Other). These guidelines include the process for gaining approval to conduct a sale, deposit requirements, the times the sale may be conducted, safe parking on the street, signage and other responsibilities of the homeowner. Many individuals will use an estate sale company. The guidelines address rules the estate sale company must follow as well. It’s important to know that this is an option and how to conduct a sale in the approved manner. Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius

psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 917-8077 Keeping Hydrated

I would like to remind everyone that with the summer heat upon us, many of our calls to 911 for a person in distress is because of dehydration. The rule is to drink water every half hour or more. Many people think that when they are in the pools for a long time they don’t need to drink water. You do. We want everyone in SCOV to have a great summer and not take a ride in an ambulance. Remember if you are thirsty it’s too late. Drink water before you are thirsty. Community Services - Katy Mosier

How many people does it take to run a library? It takes over 40 volunteers to help run the SCOV Library. These friendly, knowledgeable volunteers open and operate our library five and a half days a week, generally working two three-hour shifts each month. Behind the scenes additional volunteers maintain the database, sort donations, cover books, call on overdues and complete a myriad of other tasks. Over 350 volunteer hours are put in each month to run our library. Next time you stop by, you might thank a volunteer for keeping this fabulous amenity operating. New in fiction we have Beyond the Ice Limit by Preston and Child, and All Summer Long by Dorothea Benton Frank. Audiobook arrivals include 15th Affair by James Patterson and The Last Mile by David Baldacci. In Large Print we have Dishonorable Intentions by Stuart Woods and Hide Away by Iris Johansen, and in video we now hold Truth (Cate Blanchett) and Call the Midwife: Season 5. Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis

ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 917-8073 How Important Are Fluids in the Summer?

Fluid replacement is probably the most important nutritional concern for exercise. Approximately 60% of your body weight is water. As you exercise, fluid is lost through your skin as sweat and through your lungs when you breathe. If this fluid is not replaced at regular intervals during exercise, you can become dehydrated. When you are dehydrated, you have a smaller volume of blood circulating through your body. Consequently, the amount of blood your heart pumps with each beat decreases and your exercising muscles do not receive enough oxygen from your blood. Soon exhaustion sets in and your athletic performance suffers. If you have lost as little as two percent of your body weight due to dehydration, it can adversely affect your athletic performance. For example, if you are a 150-pound athlete and you lose three pounds during a workout, your performance will start to suffer unless you replace the fluid you have lost. Proper fluid replacement is the key to preventing dehydration and reducing the risk of heat injury during training.

Thank you to all of you who have attended our 1 PM Friday presentations this past season. We are in the process of planning next season; your suggestions are appreciated. New members to this enjoyable and rewarding committee are always welcome. If you are interested, contact the chair for more information. Due to the large attendance (over 200) at Dr. Chua’s presentation, we ran out of his contact information; we have placed more in the rack of other health related resources outside the Library in the Welcome Center. We also want to thank the 20-30 people who attended the Balance/Fall Prevention class from March to May; our instructor has seen improved stability in all the participants. Your ARC has been very busy working with homeowners as they continue to make changes to the exterior of their homes. We meet twice a month, except only once in December. In 2015, the ARC answered 316 requests (14 per meeting) for approval of room additions, walls and fences, patio covers, awnings, rolling window screens, partial window replacements, solar installations, window/patio screening, patio/porch enclosures, major landscaping projects plus other requests. The residents sought approval through Katy Mosier, the Community Services Coordinator, of 139 house paintings plus 162 other projects including roof replacements, minor landscaping and pavers, etc. The ACT (Architectural Compliance Team), a subcommittee of the ARC, did 122 listing and escrow inspections plus 17 courtesy inspections from June through December. As you can see the ARC has been very busy and we are continuing to be at least as busy as last year as we approach the half way point of 2016. Consumer Referral - Vendor List

You may designate your donation to a specific need or media in the library, ie., DVDs, large print, audio books, etc. In 2017, we will have our SCOV Home Tour on Saturday, February 18. The Books and Authors Luncheon will be on Friday, March 10.

Governing Documents Review Committee The Governing Documents Review Committee has completed the task to improve our CC&Rs (Master Declaration) and Bylaws. In March, you approved five changes to the documents that the Board of Directors and the committee considered important enough to be voted on separately before final editing. Those changes have been incorporated into the documents. The documents are now ready for your vote and may be reviewed on the SCOV website at scovaz.com: Member >Member Services >Vote> You may also ask any questions you may have on the website. Documents are also available at the Welcome Center and in the library. The ballot will be mailed to you in June along with the Annual Homeowner Dues invoice. Your SCOV Board recommends approval of these new, improved documents.

Loan Room - Community Assistance Committee

Co-Chairs Julie Holtry 825-4473 Elaine Deeter 825-5388 Gift Shop 917-8051 Shop Hours: Monday-Saturday, 9AM-12:30 PM orovalleygiftshop.com

Summer is here and the monsoons will soon arrive. Stop by the Gift Shop for a cool respite and check out the lovely items offered by our talented residents. June’s featured artist is Elaine Woods, who says, “I sculpture gourds, then use long pine needles to weave them on the sculptured gourd. There are many steps to make the gourd ready: cleaning and scrubbing after they dry, emptying out the seeds and membranes inside. After carving the gourd, I dye the outside, drill holes around the gourd, then prepare the pine needles, softening them to a certain pliability to be able to work with them.” Elaine also makes silver pendants from the prickly inside of the cleaned gourd, using the lost wax casting method. They look very detailed, lacy and delicate. In another vein, she makes pendants from Mata Ortiz pottery shards which come directly from the village. General Manager Selection Committee

The CAC has been in existence since before 1992. While it is a SCOV Board of Directors-appointed committee, it does not (and never has) received any monetary support from the Association. The Association does provide us with room space and helps with transporting the aluminum cans. The CAC raises money three ways: by donations from those using the Loan Room, through the Annual Pancake Breakfast in January and the aluminum can collection program. All functions of the committee are staffed by volunteers from the community. Currently the funds accumulated by the CAC are being used to computerize the Loan Room services. In May, we delivered 480 pounds of aluminum cans and received $192. Year to date, we have delivered 3,551 pounds, and received $1,420.40. Marketing and Publicity

Neighborhood Pride

Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3 Time to Remember

Whether you are here or away for the summer, it’s time to remember: • Weeds in cracks of driveways, sidewalks and where the cement meets the asphalt of the street are the responsi bility of the homeowner to remove. • Cactus and/or bushes in your yard should not extend over the sidewalk causing danger to walkers. • Trees must be kept trimmed up at least seven feet high over the sidewalk so as not to injure walkers or block vis ibility of a stop sign. • Exposed soil, or bare dirt, on your property needs to be covered by rock. • On a corner lot, check the street-facing side part of your yard for weeds and/or other possible infractions of the governing documents. • Artifacts, including empty pots, are not allowed in front yards. Pots should be planted with live plants, as artificial ones are not allowed.

Solar panels are now sprouting up at Catalina Vista, Desert Oasis and the Golf Maintenance Shop. Soon we will be seeing shade structures with solar panels at the Activity Center, The Views Restaurant and behind the Welcome Center. Much of the roof underlayment under the panels was scheduled for replacement in the near future. That work was accelerated to be done in conjunction with the solar installation. This will minimize future costly repairs. The Properties Committee is now working with staff to investigate methods to reduce our water bills. Comments and suggestions are welcome from all residents. We are always looking for committee members. We are also looking for residents who have been in the building trades who can advise us on various facility issues. No need to attend meetings, we’ll just call on you as needed. Tipster Editorial

The Tipster Editorial Committee is taking steps to address legitimate complaints from readers who have asserted over the years that it is very difficult to find specific articles. The committee is considering whether the order of clubs should be the same as the newly-revised website. We will be proposing changes which should be made to make our communications consistent. You will hear more about this in the coming months. Next Tipster Editorial Committee meeting is Monday, June 13, 9 AM, WC1.

conflicts with the golfing traffic. Superintendent - Michael Kropf

scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063

June is historically the hottest and driest month of the year. It is also the ugliest for overseeded golf courses in the desert Southwest. This is because many golf courses transition from winter rye grass to summer Bermuda grass. Anytime a grass dies there are a lot of brown and thin areas until the underlying Bermuda grass makes a full recovery. Our transition program, developed over many years, has helped minimize these thin areas and decreased areas needing repair. All the mechanical methods of transition including aerification, topdressing, verticutting and fertilizing are performed during the month of May to provide a good environment for the Bermuda grass to recover in June. As far back as March the rye grass was chemically treated to thin it out. This allows the Bermuda grass to see more sunlight earlier in the year to help with a quicker recovery. The final chemical application is made in mid-May to completely remove the rye and poa still left in the fairways and tees. The big weak areas begin to show up in June. During the middle of June, each of the nine holes will be closed for a week to allow a much quicker time frame to repair these bare areas. This will allow the golf course to heal much faster and be back to great condition by the end of July or August. Golf Advisory

Chair Tim Kelley 734-645-8199 First Wednesday, 2 PM, WC3 It is a time of transition. Club members who served as representatives to Golf Advisory are finished and new representatives are beginning. I want to thank those who served. It was a productive and positive year. Welcome to the new committee representatives. I look forward to working with them as we continue to improve the golf experience at The Views. The women’s and men’s club representatives provide an important communications pathway to the committee. For those who are not club members, please feel free to contact any committee representative with your concerns, solutions, and suggestions. It is also a transition for many of us as we head north for the summer. Tee times are easier to get for those who stay. Have a great summer and play well.

Food & Beverage Director - Chris Sapp

csapp@suncityorovalley.com 917-8074 Summertime at The Views

The new summer menu at The Views, includes Asian Crispy Chicken Salad with Prickly Pear Dressing and The Views new signature dessert: Bread & Butter Pudding with Salted Caramel Whiskey Butter Sauce. Guests have been asking daily for our recipe. Caution: the Whiskey Butter Sauce is addictive. Ingredients

2/3 cup raisins 1/2 cup Irish whiskey 5 eggs 2 cups whipping cream 1 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon vanilla 8 1-inch slices firm white bread (about 10 ounces) (with crusts) 3/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

Salted Caramel Whiskey Butter Sauce

•1/4 cup unsalted butter, cubed •1/2 cup sugar •1/2 teaspoon sea salt •1-1/4 cups whipping cream Directions

1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the raisins and whiskey; let soak for one hour. Butter a two-quart rectangular baking dish; set aside. 2. In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, cream, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Generously spread one side of each slice of bread with the 3/4 cup butter. Cut the slices in half diagonally and arrange the bread in the bottom of the prepared baking dish, overlapping the slices. Drain the raisins, reserving the whiskey. Sprinkle raisins over the bread, tucking some between the bread slices. Pour the custard over the bread; cover and let it soak in the refrigerator 30 minutes. 3. Preheat the oven to 375º. Place the baking dish in a large roasting pan. Add enough hot water to come halfway up the sides of the dish. Bake for 45 minutes or until the pudding is set and the top is golden (there will be a layer of melted butter over the pudding). Carefully remove the baking dish from the water bath and let cool slightly on a wire rack (butter will soak into the bread as it cools). 4. Meanwhile, for sauce, melt the butter in a two-quart saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the sugar, salt, cream, and three tablespoons of the reserved whiskey. Bring to boiling; reduce the heat, and simmer, uncovered, for 10 to 15 minutes or until the sauce thickens slightly, stirring frequently. Serve pudding warm with the sauce spooned over the top.

We meet year-round starting from 1565 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd., behind the SCOV Welcome Center/Library to enjoy an unparalleled combination of amazing desert vistas and ever improving infrastructure of bike lanes and dedicated paths. New riders are always welcome. A monthly schedule of our 20-60 mile rides is available on our website. Our well-tested loop routes support a wide variety of abilities and usually include a mid-ride coffee stop. We also offer a mountain bike option on Wednesdays, which most often heads out into the Tortolita rangelands. Tuesday morning our WOW (Women on Wheels) group takes somewhat shorter rides nearer to SCOV. In addition, we hold a number of social events each season.

We will be on summer vacation until October 5. All residents are invited to join us then. We will continue our discussion of Imperfect Ideal: Utopian and Dystopian Visions. The book is a collection of modern and ancient literature by Dostoevsky, Homer, Lenin, Oscar Wilde, Augustine, Aristotle and 16 other noteworthy thinkers. It is available from Great Books Foundation. The collection considers ideas about structuring and governing communities for the welfare of their citizens. It reveals some of the best and worst aspects of utopian and dystopian visions.

It seems that since we have our new courts, everyone wants to play Bocce. We have been getting many calls from other clubs wanting to reserve the courts. This we cannot do. The Bocce courts belong to the whole community, and except for the days that the Bocce Club uses them, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 7 PM, they are open for everyone. It is a first come, first serve situation. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the new courts and hope there will be time enough for all. Our Bocce Club has enjoyed a couple of social events and our new summer hours.

Pilates

Mary Ayers 638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Monday, 3 PM, Thursday, 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

Forty years after his death, the Joseph Pilates system of exercises is still in high demand. Fortunately, SCOV offers his mat Pilates classes twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays. Summer is here, and classes are smaller and more personal. First, specific stretching exercises are done using the dance bar and then mat routines are performed which may be modified for those of us with limitations. People ask. “Can the benefits of the Pilates method, which come from the strengthening and stretching exercises we do, really develop the body’s core (abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is, “Yes,” and the benefits achieved in our classes can’t be beat. Don’t forget about improved balance, muscle tone, stamina and well being. The cost is only $8/class, and annual club dues are $20 pp. Join us or just stop by and watch. Call Mary. Pinochle

Dave Flatness 425-443-3708 Wednesday, 6 PM, Desert Oasis/Ocotillo

We play single deck and rotate partners every four hands. Bring 50¢ for your tally. The first Wednesday is treat night. The third Wednesday is birthday night. If your skills are a little rusty, we will get you up to speed quickly. Annual dues $6 pp. Poets Corner

Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762 ssrafieyan@icloud.com Monday, 9:30-11:30 AM, Desert Oasis

While it’s difficult to distinguish the difference between a piece of prose and a prose poem, what really seems to matter is how well the piece itself works, its language, its message, its appeal. The following excerpt from a submission by Poets Corner member Bonnie Lamm, works well whatever it’s category. Called Chocolate, Coffee and Cigarettes its about a young woman’s determination to acquire a new habit. “The cellophane crackles as I open the package. A few grains of tobacco fall on my tongue. I put my pinkie up and lightly lift them off, feeling quite sophisticated. I scratch the match across the sandpapery strip of the matchbook and hold the flame to the tip of the white cylinder. I draw in a deep breath. My eyes fly open and start to water. I feel dizzy. Quickly, I put the cigarette out and lie down until my head stops spinning, vowing to never smoke again.” Poker

We have created a much needed new position of studio manager which has been filled by Nancy Eckhoff. Just watching her efforts says it was a good choice. On May 1, we began experimenting with selling stained and fused glass items from one of the windows in the studio. This is open to all members and anyone wanting to do so may contact Juliet Williams. The regulations are posted on the door of that window inside the studio. Please stop and check out the works of your friends and neighbors. Special thanks to those who have been teaching, monitor-

The goal is to replace paper signup calendars in the shop. The advantages of the online system over paper are monitors don’t have to go to the shop to sign up or make changes, and anyone can go online to learn if the shop will be staffed by a monitor at a time they plan to work there. Presently, both paper and online systems are used, but on July 1, the paper system will go away. To learn how to use the online system, go to the tutorial under the monitors tab on the Woodworking Club’s website. Our next club meeting will include a training session.
