From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Board of Directors captdonc@gmail.com Respect and Trust by Donald Coleman Sun City Oro Valley is a unique place that has been very successful for almost 30 years. We have experienced many achievements that were brought forth with the assistance of many volunteers from both the resident and the staff community. We have, over and over again, trusted and respected those individuals as they worked their way through all of the difficulties each challenge produced. Their commitment and talents, along with our trust and respect, have proven formidable. Imagine, for a brief moment, what if: • the residents didn’t respect or trust our staff to bill us accurately; • the Board didn’t trust the staff to prepare our financial reports accurately; • the employees didn’t trust management to handle their payroll deductions correctly; • committee members or staff did not respect each other? At the very least, our community would quickly become very inefficient and chaotic. Respect, dedication, and vision are glue which binds us together as a great community. Each of us values respect and trust from others. That is also true of our neighbor, our customer, our service provider, or the resident that has volunteered to serve on one of our many committees and even ourselves. We all consider a loss of respect and trust as very serious. Recently the Board of Directors has been characterized as having acted in a manner that caused the loss of trust by all the residents of SCOV. This claim, by a few residents, if true, would imply a very serious problem for our association. Fortunately, this claim against the Board is not valid and the assumption that everyone agrees is also not true. This action by a few has, unfortunately, led to other residents being misinformed and misguided. Although at times we may disagree on an issue, it is incumbent on all of us to treat each other in a respectful manner. I would urge everyone to continue to work hard to earn and retain the respect and trust of all others. I would also urge all residents and staff to avoid the practice of damaging someone else’s earned respect and trust without clear evidence to the contrary.

General Manager - Bob Mariani bmariani@suncityorovalley.com 917-8080 What Happened This Summer? There are always more than enough tasks to keep the staff extremely busy during the summer. In addition to the multitude of daily chores that require attention, a summary of special projects that were completed or are in process is outlined below. Restaurant project: There were some challenges with this project yet the end result is that SCOV now has a spectacular restaurant. Special thanks goes to the Sun City Foundation that donated over $27,000 for patio furniture, the Renovation Committee and the Woodworking Club that refinished the McMahan doors. Solar Project: Solar arrays have been installed throughout the community to provide the majority of electrical power for the common area facilities and considerable vehicle parking shade. Exterior painting: Painting of the common area facilities has taken place through the summer. By the time you read this article, painting of all the facilities may be complete. Catalina Vista: Considerable re-vamping of Catalina Vista was recently completed. Most of this work was planned through the Asset Reserve Fund. The work included flooring, folding walls and window treatment replacement plus the AV system was upgraded, which was funded by the ILR. Desert Oasis: Members of the management team spent time during the summer gathering information and developing initial plans to update the Desert Oasis. At the September Board Meeting, a committee was formed to complete this project with management’s assistance. Electronic voting: The Election Committee along withRobin Coulter investigated the feasibility and legality of using an electronic voting system for SCOV elections. This system was presented to the Board in September and approved for use in 2017. GM search: As a result of my revised employment agreement that calls for my retirement from SCOV at the end of this calendar year, a search for my replacement was conducted over the summer, which should be concluded before you read this article. Clear Comfort pool treatment system: A system that sanitizes the pool water was installed to treat the Desert Oasis pool. If this system proves to be effective, it may be considered for use in the AFC pool. Chalk Creek maintenance plan: A maintenance plan was developed by WLB Engineering, and regular inspections are now taking place so that preventative maintenance can take place.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 917-8058 Updated Governing Documents In late October, the Board of Directors approved the newest Sun City Oro Valley Development Standards. This is a good time to download a copy for reference from our website. There are also hard copies available in our Welcome Center. Many of you are just returning from your summer locations and have not had the opportunity to review the new Master Declaration which was adopted by the voting membership of the Association on July 1, 2016. This document is also available on our website or in our Welcome Center. I encourage you to read both documents to familiarize yourselves with the current policies. When you decide to make changes to the exteriors of your homes, these documents are the first places to check so that you come prepared to present your submittal forms for approval either inhouse or with the Architectural Review Committee.

We love your donations. Out of the hundreds of items donated each month, the best books and movies are added to our collection. The value of donated items added to our shelves in the last year totals $15,174. Some donations are traded at Bookmans, which enabled us to obtain $665 worth of items in trade last year. A large portion of donations are sold at our ongoing book/video sales, and items we can’t sell are donated to the Oro Valley Public Library, the VA Hospital, and a women’s prison. Donations that are outdated, or in poor condition, are thrown away. Please think of us when cleaning out your house, and check the donation criteria on our library webpage before bringing your items in. Wood bowl by Don Jovag. Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 917-8073 Re-Rack Dumbbells and Weight Plates Failing to re-rack your dumbbells is as dangerous as leaving your gym bag lying on the floor. In addition to the tripping danger, the next exerciser will need to search for the weights if they’re not in their proper location on the rack. Re-racking your weights is part of your workout. It’s so simple. This also pertains to weight plates. Leaving a 45-pound plate leaning against a machine is just as dangerous as leaving a dumbbell out on the floor. So be a good sport and don’t leave a bar or machine with full racks of 45-pound plates. Dropping weights on the floor can cause injury to you or others and can also damage the equipment itself. Always set it down as gently as you can. Special Note from the AFC: Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, for any questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, November 8, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, November 9, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Association Committees Active Health Chair Janyce Lundstedt 503-475-0520 janyce.lundstedt@gmail.com Oct.-May, Second Tue., 1:30 PM, WC1 suncityorovalley.com/members-login/committees/active-health
The objective of the AHC (Active Health Committee), in conjunction with the SCOV staff, is to identify and develop health and wellness programs for our active adult community. Consider becoming a member of the AHC if you have the desire and/or expertise to help bring to SCOV new, exciting, and evidence-based programs that promote all our residents to be active physically and mentally. If interested, attend one of our meetings and/or contact Janyce. The AHC sponsors several presentations each year. Save December 9, 1 PM, Auditorium for our first presentation for this season. The speaker is Dr. Tim Short, a new podiatrist at Oro Valley Hospital. His topic is keeping our feet healthy so we can be physically active. Just a reminder that the 10-week Balance Class is ongoing on Mondays, 10:30-11:30 AM, AFC/Studio 1 & 2. Feel free to try one class for $10, or join now for $65 for the remaining sessions through December 19. Checks should be made out to our instructor, Heather Chalon, and brought to the first class you attend.
Aquatic Fitness Center Advisory Chair Michael Takerian 520-256-3213 michaeltakerian@gmail.com First Wed., 11:30 AM, WC1 afc@suncityorovalley.com
The Aquatic Fitness Center Advisory Committee would like to offer a warm welcome back to all of our residents and guests. Please consider taking part in one of the many quality class offerings at the AFC. Prior to engaging in an activity, whether in a class or working out on your own, please avoid wearing perfume/cologne. Some fragrances may be a respiratory irritant to certain individuals. Some of our residents are involved in their designed circuit training, which may involve utilizing several different pieces of equipment throughout the workout. Please be considerate of others by replacing that piece of equipment upon completion of each set. Leaving the items on the floor constitutes a possible trip hazard. Please do not set weights on any of the benches. A very informative website that the AFC Committee feels is worthwhile to checkout is, The Gray Iron Fitness Newsletter, senior-exercise-central.com. There are many great ideas involving exercise, nutrition, supplements and much more.
Architectural Review Janice Strassburg, 520-338-2568, janicestrassburg@gmail.com Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM, WC3 A Little Deep Reading As a follow up to the hierarchy of our governing documents you might like to read the Tract Declarations as they pertain to your particular unit and lot number. If you go to SCOV/Members/Documents/Tract Declarations, then select an area you wish to read about. Each tract has some specific verbiage depending on what Del Webb intended. As you scroll through, you might pay specific attention to landscape and walls and fences. Of particular interest, I looked at Unit
7
12, Lots 167-276. On page 7 you will find what pertains to landscaping, and page 8 talks about walls and fences. These references will not be the same for each specific area. Also of interest, not every area has regulations. Be sure to pay attention to This Week in SCOV as we hope to schedule some one-on-one time slots in the Activity Center to help residents navigate through documents that apply to ARC (Architectural Review Committee) and NP (Neighborhood Pride). You are also welcome to call with any questions.
Consumer Referral - Vendor List Chair Gail Parson, 520-275-7117 gailscov@comcast.net Here are the directions for looking up the Vendor List on the website (formerly called Consumer Referral List): Go to scovaz.com >Members >Member Services >Consumer Referral Vendor List >Read More. A printed copy of the Vendor List is located at the Welcome Desk in the Activity Center during Center business hours. Vendors may call or email Gail Parson to inquire about applying to be on our Consumer Referral Vendor List.
Future Housing Task Force Co-Chairs Sally Evert 520-955-7877 salleyevert@gmail.com, Jon Olson 818-3705 jboclo@comcast.net
After a summer break, we have resumed our work to recommend to the Board a set of standards to guide and regulate requests for future housing modifications to keep our community housing attractive to future buyers. We could use a couple of new members, particularly with knowledge and experience in the housing industry. Call either co-chair if you are interested in joining us.

Be sure to check out the delicious salads, sandwiches and specials made for your enjoyment. Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and this would be a perfect time to bring your guests to The Views to celebrate. Make your reservations now; see the Views Restaurant on page 11 for details.

General Manager Search Chair Dick Brammell 701-361-8573 Golf Advisory Chair Tim Kelley 734-645-8199 First Wed., 2 PM, WC3
The GAC (Golf Advisory Committee) is your communication link to The Views Golf Club. The GAC meets the 1st Wednesday of each month at 2 PM in WC3. At these meetings, operational reports are provided by the General Manager, the Head Professional and the Golf Superintendent. Each of the men’s and women’s clubs provide an update on their activities and upcoming events. In addition, the GAC Board Liaison provides timely information about Board actions that affect the golf operations. The meetings also provide for audience members to bring information and concerns to the GAC and administrative staff. If you are unable to attend a meeting please contact one of the club representatives or the chair directly with your concerns, issues, and questions.

One final note, the GAC is not a decision-making committee. We provide an advisory and communication link between our golfing community and the operations staff.
Government Affairs Mike Moyer, 818-6509, mmoyerpp@gmail.com Second Wed., 1:30 PM, WC3 Suncityorovalley.com/members-login/committees/government-affairs
Be sure to VOTE on Tuesday, November 8. Arizona residents in SCOV will also be voting on Oro Valley’s newly updated General Plan on November 8, so please be informed when you vote. This plan includes recommendations on such issues as community, safety, and environment. More information can be found at www.orovalleyaz.gov/generalplan/ yourvoiceov. Melissa Martin, assistant to Senator Jeff Flake, will be in the Activity Center/Kachina Lounge on Tuesday, November 15, 10:30 AM, to assist residents with issues that might need help from our senator in Washington. The next GAC meeting will be Wednesday, November 9 at 1:30 PM, WC3.
Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell 825-5763 Meeting Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1
November will be a busy time at the Loan Room with many visitors to our community and get togethers to celebrate the coming holidays. Please make your reservations in advance, since this is faster when you pick up your items and also assures you will receive the items you need. We do run out of some items at this time of year. Please remember that you can only make reservations two months in advance. When using our new website to request needed items, remember to be sure your dates are Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Loan Room is a free service to SCOV members. We look forward to meeting your needs.
Marketing Barbara Ross 818-0701 bfgnye@gmail.com Fourth Thu., 3 PM, WC1 Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Sincere Thanks! Not often enough do we say thank you to the people around us. Perhaps, as homeowners, we should say an occasional thank you to our neighbor who borders our personal property. If, when he has his own yard cleaned up by a landscaper, he includes part of yours which may have a problem caused by his foliage, it just might deserve a thank you. Neighborhood Pride issues thanks to all homeowners who: • keep trees trimmed so stop signs are visible • keep trees trimmed up high off sidewalks • keep plants trimmed away from sidewalks • keep their yards weed-free, neat and tidy • make sure all individual lights are working in house number plates Thanksgiving is a good time to sincerely thank all homeowners who take pride in their own personal property and work diligently to keep our entire community a beautiful place in which to live.
Help Collate the Tipster
Once a month, residents are needed to insert flyers into the Tipster. Receive your Tipster early, share refreshments with us at the Auditorium. Usually the work is performed on the last business day of the month at approximately 10:45 AM. Call Dave or Tempe Johnson 825-6994.
Posse Chair Larry Clark 404-7664 2larryclark@gmail.com First Tue., 3 PM, Catalina Vista scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)
Why does the Posse patrol SCOV every night? The number one reason is to find open garage doors. Last year we found 947 garage doors up. When we find an open door, we turn on our vehicle’s flashing lights, and then look up your phone number so we can call. If we don’t have the correct number for you, or your renters, we must call 911 and get assistance from OVPD. We want your garage doors closed so that you will find your golf clubs and tools still in your garage tomorrow morning. Just as important, you will not find a rattlesnake under your car, where it came in looking for warmth. Safety and security are very important to those who serve on the four Posse Squads in our community. Please volunteer and become a member.
Properties Chair Ed Zwerling, 520-329-0737, EZwerling@Yahoo.com Third Thu., 9AM, WC1
The Properties Committee conducts inspections of all buildings, equipment and grounds and reports to the Board and General Manager the status of safety, maintenance and general conditions. Recommendations regarding preservation, maintenance or replacement and improvements are also made. The committee also advises the Board on distribution and/or redistribution of space allocations in Association facilities. We are always looking for new members. You don’t have to have a technical background to join. We meet the third Thursday of every month at 9 AM in the Welcome Center. Our meetings are open to the public and we encourage all residents to attend.
Tipster Editorial Chair Lou Phillippi 638-6957 lnphillippi@yahoo.com The next Tipster Editorial Committee meeting is Monday, November 14, 9 AM, WC3. It appears that many recent submitters of articles to the Tipster seem unfamiliar with the standards that the Tipster has established: length of articles, standard abbreviations used, use of emphasis, to name only a few. To keep the committee from having to edit your article, please go to the SCOV website, click on News & Info, click on Tipster and then click on Article Standards. There you can download all the information you will need to submit an article that will not be edited. Don’t miss the Annual Arts & Crafts Festival Saturday, December 3, 9 AM - 3 PM Activity Center

any time at 90 degrees straight back to the cart path. The goal of directing the golf carts on to the fairways is to keep the traffic in the roughs to a minimum. When the roughs go dormant in the winter they can’t recover and start to get smashed down. The system worked well last year and the roughs held up much better during the whole winter season.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063 The first part of November is when the golf course has dried up from the large amount of water used during overseeding. The ground is firm enough to allow the golf carts off the paths and on to the fairways. Last year traffic was controlled using a new system of blue stakes to direct golf carts on and off the paths. This would be a good time to refresh everyone on the rules associated with the blue stake gates to help minimize confusion. Each hole, excluding the par 3’s, will have a set of blue stakes at the start of the hole and at the end of the hole. These are “gates” where the golf cart will pass through to both leave and return to the cart path. Once the cart leaves the path through the gate it will drive straight to the fairway. The cart will remain in the fairway until it either reaches the end of the fairway where it will leave through the exit gate, or if driving the rest of the fairway is unnecessary then exit at

Come to SCOV’s 8th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival by Linda Bretz It’s time to get in the spirit for the holidays, and what a great way to start that off by attending our admission-free, Arts & Crafts Festival, which is in the Activity Center Saturday, December 3, 9 AM–3 PM. Our resident artists will be selling items they’ve been working so hard to make all year. This is SCOV’s most lively and largely attended event of the year, open to the public as well as residents, so be sure to set up some time to check it all out. Don’t forget that The Views Restaurant will have goodies and sandwiches for purchase as well as beverages in the AC. You’ll be pleased to know that we take Visa and MasterCard, as well as cash. We even offer some demos (check our bulletin board during the event for times and locations). There is a raffle, and you may donate non-perishable food to IMPACT, a local food bank. You’ll want to see Pat Bloom’s delightful and ingenious pottery. As Pat says, “There’s nothing like serving food from beautiful casseroles and dishes” (that she has made). Not only will you be able to purchase her fantastic dishes, but she also loves to fashion animals, vases and little boxes out of clay with those highly talented hands of hers. Something for everyone in the family. You certainly won’t want to miss Bill Norton’s fabulous wood creations. Oak, red heart juniper, aspen or a kiln-dried exotic wood are all candidates for his gorgeous and unusual pieces. You may find bowls, ornaments, functional boxes or highly creative art pieces. We’re so honored to have such a talented craftsman like Bill here in SCOV. Penny Parsons delights us with her incredibly intricate, yet durable baskets that she makes from scratch. You’ll find her techniques quite delicate in looks, and pleasing to see. What a terrific way to package an assortment of cool gifts for your loved ones.

What have we here each Wednesday morning? It appears to be a group of pleasant, sociable artists working on their pieces. November is growth month and our ranks fill with returning winter residents. We’ve been busy planning and painting all summer and now it’s time to produce. Our club has a joint show with the Photo Club this month and the photos/paintings will be displayed on the Catalina Vista walls. We also have an upcoming theme show, Black and White, which will hang in the Activities Center in December. Come join us for some constructive fun.

You don’t have to be a modeler to join the Modelers club. We have members who enjoy operating radio controlled (RC) aircraft, boats and cars. Some members operate model railroad equipment. Some members volunteer at local museums such as the Gadsden-Pacific Division Toy Train Operating Museum. Want to fly an aircraft? Learn to use our simulator. Whatever you want to do just come and join us. All SCOV residents are welcome at our monthly meetings and the use of the Modelers Room. The room provides space to build models and to assist in building and operating the new HO train layout. At our meetings, you will see what we are about, and you may enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet roll. From time to time, we schedule field trips of interest to modelers.

Join the group for lively discussion of techniques and results in water media. Bayles and Orland in Art & Fear have an interesting quote: “The need to make art may not stem solely from the need to express who you are, but from a need to complete a relationship with something outside yourself. As a maker of art you are custodian of issues larger than self. In making art you declare what is important.”
Woodworking Pres. John Njaa 825-5486 Membership Lauren Strassburg 338-2568 scovwoodworkingclub.com Next meeting Nov. 16, 1:30 PM, Desert Oasis/Saguaro Club dues and the annual SCOV Courtyard Sale are the primary sources of income for our club’s treasury. The treasury funds the purchases of shop supplies such as glue, saw blades, abrasives, repair parts, hand tools, eye protection, router bits and many other items. Because most of our income comes from dues, it is important that members pay their dues when due each year to ensure the availability of shop supplies and to retain their good standing as a club member. At the Courtyard Sale, we sell tools and other items that have been donated to the club by residents and others. The proceeds go to our treasury. Residents who wish to donate items can bring them by the shop 9 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday. Check our website and postings in the shop often for information about events affecting our club this fall and winter.

The political frenzy leading up to this month’s presidential election generated a number of partisan poems and much discussion over the past few months among members of the Poets Corner but not to the exclusion of more personal themes often related to our advancing ages. While themes of death, grief and loneliness are universal, our poetic approaches are varied and distinct. You might suppose we’d rely solely on old familiar verse forms or possibly venture into the realm of unrhymed and metrically uneven lines, but Bunny Poll surprised and delighted us all with the rhythm, spelling and diction of the following: “i havta move/don’t wanna go/wanna stay/but havta go they say/why, i cry/cause yur old/and gonna die…” It seems you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Folk dancing is more fun than a treadmill and excellent exercise for balance, mindfulness, muscle and mood. For most dances we hold Fado Blanquita (Portugal/Brazil) hands in a circle performing non-gymnastic steps to the sometimes strange but fascinating music and rhythms of diverse cultures, including our own. No partner or prior experience needed. A typical dance session consists of 12-15 mostly easy folk dances always preceded by instructions. Drop by to see if this internationally popular dance form is right for you, or see videos of us in action by doing a Google search on Folk Dance FDCSCOV YouTube.

We have two excellent instructors who have been with us three years and are very familiar with our exercise requirements. They aim to make each class participant, regardless of their exercise level, adept in achieving their maximum core strength. They stress the importance of strong abdominal muscles, plus all of the additional core muscles, which help stabilize our spine and pelvis. Core muscles run the entire length of your torso. These are strengthened with simple Pilates exercises. Low-impact warm-up exercises include stretching and deep breathing, preparing us for the strengthening exercises. Instructors modify the most strenuous exercises for anyone with limitations. Group mat classes result in benefits that can’t be beaten, such as better balance, more flexibility, more muscle tone, increased energy and well being. Please join us or come watch a class. Cost is $8/class and annual club dues $20 pp. Call Mary.

Most of us think of Tai Chi as a way to prevent falls, improve breathing and reduce stress, but it is so much more. Research by Tufts University School of Medicine credits Tai Chi with decreased pain, improved sleep and mood, and better quality of life. In our classes we not only enjoy learning Tai Chi form, we also improve our balance, flexibility and strength and even learn meditation skills. Our instructors, Jose HernandezRivera and Donna Drazenovich, stress the use of Tai Chi in daily life. Our current class session has already begun, but returning seasonal residents with previous Tai Chi experience may still be able to join. Please contact Gail Barr for details. Are you a newcomer who missed the beginning class session? Don’t worry. Just mark your calendar for the next class session beginning January 5.
