Association News

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board Of Directors meadedavis11@gmail.com Let’s Get Involved By Meade Davis. All of us agree that SCOV is a wonderful place in which to live. We have so many terrific opportunities and amenities. We all appreciate the hard work of our staff, but we must also recognize the importance of the life blood of our community, the volunteers. Our volunteers do much of the work that makes SCOV the magnificent place we enjoy. Veteran volunteers bring experience and knowledge to the process. New volunteers bring fresh ideas and energy to the table. Not only is volunteering essential to the well-being of our community, but it also benefits the mental and physical health of those who become involved. By volunteering you will meet new friends and increase the fun and enjoyment of living in this place of enchantment. If you really appreciate SCOV, I would encourage you to get involved. Attend some Board and committee meetings where you will learn what’s going on and be able to voice your opinions. Join a committee and actively contribute to our Association. Join and take an active role in one or more of our many special interest clubs or activities. Not only will you help improve our community, you will also improve your health and well-being. So join your dedicated neighbors and get involved.

General Manager - Bob Mariani bmariani@suncityorovalley.com 917-8080 SCOV Insurance Have you ever wondered what kinds of insurance SCOV has in place? Some of your dues go toward paying for the Association’s insurance needs and requirements. Below is a list of the different types of insurance SCOV has secured. Some of these policies are required by the governing documents and others are in place due to needs that are beyond basic requirements. Property insurance: This covers all buildings, structures, and personal property owned by the Association and owned by other parties, including common property improvements, golf course, open spaces, and recreational facilities. General liability: In addition to protecting physical property, our Association has commercial liability insurance. Unlike property damage, which often can be measured in dollar amounts, liability claims have no limits other than those imposed by courts. Auto: Associations with employees who drive cars, trucks, or maintenance vehicles on association property or elsewhere while carrying out Association business is covered by auto insurance. Directors’ and officers’ liability: Boards are volunteers trying to serve their communities, but as the old adage says, “No good deed goes unpunished.” So, even when boards behave appropriately and use sound judgment, someone may still file a lawsuit claiming sexual harassment, discrimination, or mismanagement of funds, to name a few common suits. This insurance also extends to other volunteers and management. Umbrella liability: This type of coverage extends the limits of the liability coverage provided by the standard liability insurance policies. No standard umbrella policy exists, so the Association works closely with our insurance professional to design a policy tailored to our specific needs. Workers’ compensation: This insurance, which is required, provides benefits for employees who sustain injuries while working for the Association. Equipment: This is specific insurance for breakdown of large equipment, such as golf course mowers that are not covered under the auto insurance. Pollution liability: This is a unique insurance which covers leaks from our fuel tanks. Crime: This is a specific insurance that covers issues such as employee dishonesty, forgery, computer fraud and fund transfer fraud. Keep in mind that the information above is a summary. While all the policies have been listed, not every covered incident is listed. The total premiums for the above insurance policies are approximately $173,000.

Extensive solar project to save energy costs, reduce carbon footprint by Jim Mitchell

Ironically, as I sit down to start writing this, it’s a rare rainy day in SCOV. After all, it’s the tail end of the monsoons. But I know that tomorrow, we can all sing the Beatles’, Here Comes the Sun because that tune is true almost 300 days a year here. That’s why more than three years ago, the Association’s volunteer Properties Committee began investigating an extensive solar project for our community. Scheduled to be fully operational by the end of this month, the project will provide around 60 percent of the electricity our facilities now use. That’s more than 700,000 kilowatt-hours per year at 13.65 cents per kilowatthour, a rate five percent less than our current Tucson Electric Power Company (TEP) rates. First year savings are projected to be $5,000. But over the 20-year life of the Solar Services Agreement, savings are projected at $544,000 if annual rates increase one percent Ed Zwerling, Chairman of the Properties Committee, and Bob Mariani, SCOV General Manager, discuss the final and $899,000 if they increase two stage of the solar project. Assistant Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 917-8070 WAP Upgrade What is a WAP you ask? You probably use them every day…it’s a Wireless Access Point. These are located throughout our campus to provide WiFi in our buildings, courtyard and pools. As with any technology, the improvements occurring in the wireless field change exponentially faster than we can (or should) replace them. Some of the WAPs were not able to handle the growing demand we are experiencing here in SCOV. Who knew we’d need WiFi for our iPad, iPhone, computers, TVs and projects? Because we have had our WAPs for a long time and some have stopped working, an upgrade was sought during the budget process last year. At the end of September the upgrade took place and we now have access points that can handle the traffic level we have in SCOV as well as room to grow. The wireless future looks bright and speedy for SCOV.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 917-8077

October brings us cooler weather and the start of all facility winter hours. Please check page one of this Tipster to see the winter hours. As many seasonal residents start to return, I would like to remind you to have your membership card/fob ready when entering a building. We have several new monitors, and asking to see your membership card or ask your name is part of their job. Also, I would like to remind guests that as they enter all buildings (except the Activity Center), they must swipe their card/fob and sign in at the monitor desk at that facility. SCOV is a private community. Monitoring who comes and goes into a facility should be a comfort to all residents.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 917-8058 Exterior Changes to Your Home As many of you return from the cooler areas of the nation to our sunny community, there is an uptick in eagerness to update the exterior of your homes. Courtyards, walls, fences, gates, patios, lighting, roofs, windows, room additions, screens, rolling shades and major/minor landscaping. are just a few of the items that are being updated. This is a reminder to refer to the Master Declaration and the Development Standards before making any decisions about what you wish to do. Please pay special attention to setback and height restrictions. The ARC Submittal Form and the In-House Submittal Form are both available on our website under Members/Documents. A plot plan to attach to your forms is available in my office. Please come to my office to review the submittal request so that we can make sure that your package is as complete as possible for ARC members to review. If you have clear verbiage about what you want to accomplish, good sketches with dimensions, material samples or brochures and colors consistent with the directions of the governing documents, the consideration usually goes very quickly and smoothly. As a reminder, the ARC meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 2 PM in the Welcome Center.

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, October 2016

The deadline for any paperwork to be reviewed in my office is one week prior by 11 AM. I am available for submittals (both ARC and In-House) review 9:00 -11:00 a.m. every weekday.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 917-8073 Going too easy on yourself All walking is not created equal: Strolling is better than sitting, but to score walking’s cardio, strength and fat-burning effects you need to push yourself a little harder. If you ask runners what their one-mile pace is, they would probably know it, but many walkers don’t. But you should! When walking for fitness, you should aim for a 15-minute mile. Not there yet? No worries. Simply work toward that goal. Keep track of your pace with a free app, such as LFconnect or a fitnesstracking device, such as Fitbit or simply use a stopwatch or pedometer. Special Note From the AFC Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday at 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis for questions or problems with the AFC. Tuesday, October 11, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen Wednesday. Wednesday, October 12, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen Thursday.

Avoid social conversations while at an exercise station; other patrons may be waiting to use that item. Swimmers and walkers are to sign in for their lane at the time of usage. Reservations of lanes are only permitted by the posted scheduled SCOV classes. There is a 45-minute time limit per lane, which encompasses all individuals in each lane. Compliance with these policies ensures that all individuals have an equal opportunity to enjoy our fine facility. Please remember to stay hydrated. Water is still considered the best hydrator.

Friends of the Library You can go into the Library for a personalized introduction or just go on your computer at home and “play” with it. Look up a book or author to see what we have available. You can tell if it’s available right now or when it’s due to be returned. There are lots of new materials being added weekly. Come and see what’s new. Then join The Friends of the Library and help support the acquisition of even more new materials.

Future Housing Task Force Sally Evert 520-955-7877 salleyevert@gmail.com The Future Housing Committee is in need of new members. Contact Jon Olson (jboclo@comcast.net) or Sally Evert if you are interested. We need your help.

October featured artists are Bill Norton and Jane Fairchild. Bill taught industrial arts at all levels throughout his career. Now he chooses special wood pieces and lives with them until becoming inspired. “I just really enjoy working the equipment until my mind, heart and hands are happy with what my eyes see.” His goal is to make something different every time. Jane makes lightweight necklaces of novelty yarns, finished with beads and magnetic clasps. “While knitting long scarves for the cold winters of New York, I ended up with leftover pieces of yarn too short to make more scarves. I made a short necklace, added a few beads, and the Fiber Fling was born.” She recently began offering colorful pottery wind chimes to add music to your yard.

General Manager Search Chair Dick Brammell 701-361-8573

The General Manager Search Committee has reviewed candidate applications and selected for interviews those candidates whom we determined to meet our qualifications. The Board of Directors plans to conduct on-site interviews with the final candidates and then make a decision on which candidate to hire as our new General Manager.

Golf Advisory Committee The population of golfers is increasing as summer vacationers, part time residents and visitors return. Increasing player population and decreasing daylight reduces the number of tee times available. Whether you are making a tee time reservation for just you, a foursome, a group, or a club, be as accurate as possible. When you make the reservation, please provide all of the players’ names. Notify the Pro Shop as soon as possible for changes to the: • roster and number of players

Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

• available space for other players Accurate and timely information for tee times will allow the Pro Shop to fill unused tee times. This is important as we accommodate the increasing demand for tee times and in maximizing revenue for The Views. Thank you. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell 825-5763 Meeting Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1 You probably know by now that the new computer system is up and running in the Loan Room. We believe this program will eventually make us more efficient in handling your requests. Beginning in October, you will be able to make requests on the SCOV, Loan Room, website which should make getting the equipment more convenient. To access this site, you will need to log into the SCOV website, go to Member Services, and click on the Loan Room. You will need to create a new password specifically for the Loan Room, look through the equipment listed and then make your request. Once the volunteers in the Loan Room review your request and dates needed, you will receive an email letting you know that a reservation has been made for you or an explanation if there is a problem with your request. There needs to be at least a week between your request and the pickup date you have chosen. You will need to be sure your dates and times are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. Reservations can also still be made at the Loan Room in person. We are looking forward to you using the new system. In September, we delivered 500 pounds, the second load of aluminum cans to the recycler, for the current fiscal year, and received $200. Year to date for this fiscal year is 1,040 pounds, we received $416.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Perhaps Perhaps you didn’t know, or you just forgot, how much things grow here in our desert. The monsoon season this year caused trees, grasses, shrubs, and weeds to really grow. Pre-emergence applied to your yard will stop the germination of seeds, and you won’t have as many weeds next year. Check with your landscaper or pest control professional. Don’t forget to remove weeds in cracks of your driveway, sidewalk and where the concrete meets the blacktop of the street. Plants protruding over sidewalks need to be trimmed back so as not to injure passing walkers. Trees at corners need to be trimmed so stop signs may be seen. Suckers under trees should be cut to the ground. With cooler weather here, take a look at your mailbox, flag and post to see if they need painting. If you can’t do the job yourself, check the Consumer Referral Vendor List on the SCOV website for the name and number of someone who will do it for a nominal fee. Please continue to take pride in your property.

This month the Properties Committee will be conducting our semi-annual inspection of community owned facilities. The goal is to report to staff and the Board of Directors any structural, maintenance and safety issues that may need remediation. If you see something that you think we should review, please contact me or any other member of the Properties Committee. Our water-usage initiative is underway, and we will soon identify actions that will reduce our water consumption without affecting our quality of life. This is being conducted with other committees and various maintenance departments. We are always looking for new members. You don’t have to have a technical background to join. Our meetings are open to the public, and we encourage all residents to attend

Coffee and Conversation

Golf Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs kgriggs@theviewsgolfclub.com 917-8053 We hope you had a great summer and are ready for another fun season at The Views Golf Club. The new staff is certainly ready for another busy year, and we are eager to serve our annual pass holders and Residents to the very best of our ability. The GolfNow program continues to be a success as does inviting outside groups to experience our spectacular golf course. These groups will be booked around our annual pass holder times as much as possible. Please remember that pass holders do have a nine-day advanced-booking option. The golf course is currently closed for overseeding and will remain so through Sunday, October 9. We will reopen on Monday, October 10. We will be cart path only until Saturday, October 29. Our schedule will be: Tee Time days Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 7 AM, Tuesday’s crossover begins at 7 AM and includes the 18-Hole Ladies Club starting at 11:15 AM. Wednesday’s Shotgun will be 8 AM and includes the 18-Hole Men’s Club and limited open play followed by a 12:30 PM Shotgun. Thursday’s Shotguns will be 8 AM, 9-Hole clubs only, and 11 AM open play. For those of you who choose to walk/ride the course during the closed period or anytime in October, remember that all traffic, pedestrian or vehicular, must remain on the cart paths. This is to protect our immature grass. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. When we reopen for play, please ensure that you abide by the walking signs that are posted for your convenience. If you are an evening rider or walker, keep in mind you will be sharing the facility with golfers. So be cautious and courteous.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063 October is the start of a new season of golf. The golf course has been overseeded so there are different colors of green on the fairways, tees and greens. The divot mix will be replaced with a sand and seed mix that is only to be used on fairways and tees that have been overseeded. This year the green fairway on #4 and the tee fairway on #5 will not be overseeded so please don’t put seed in divots on those holes. The seed will germinate during the winter, and when the Bermuda grass goes dormant, the germinated seed mix will leave green spots all over the fairway. This also applies to all of the roughs since they aren’t overseeded either. This helps reduce extra maintenance required to chemically treat and remove the green spots. Another reminder is that the course will be very wet following overseeding. Even though the water is slowly turned off prior to the course reopening, the soil will be very saturated. Golf carts will be regulated to the cart paths for about two weeks to allow the fairways extra time to firm. Wet areas will then be marked once the cart path restriction is lifted to prevent golf carts from causing damage in lingering wet areas.

Computerization of the CAC Loan Room by Gay Russell Who do you call for help if you just had knee, hip or shoulder replacement surgery; you fell and need a wheelchair/crutches/ walker; your family is coming for a visit and extra beds are needed; your grandchildren need car seats/ Loan Room new computers on check-out desk. high chairs/toys during their visit; you’re entertaining and need extra chairs and tables? In SCOV these temporary emergencies mean a trip to the CAC Loan Room. The CAC (Community Assistance Committee) is a SCOV Board-appointed committee responsible for the Loan Room, the Recycle Aluminum Can Collection Program and the Annual Pancake Breakfast. The Loan Room staff, the workers with the Can Collection, and the cooks and service personnel for the Pancake Breakfast are all SCOV resident volunteers. All year these activities involve more than 100 people contributing their time and efforts for the betterment of our community. The CAC Loan Room has medical and child-care equipment as well as items for out-of-town visitors which can be checked out by SCOV residents free of charge. This service is unique to Sun City Oro Valley. Other communities may have committees that handle some contacts for medical items; but SCOV is unique in that a well-equipped facility with items for loan is available. During 2016, the CAC embarked on a project headed by CAC chair, Gay Russell, to computerize the Loan Room inventory, check-in and out services and reservations. This project was funded by monies raised from the CAC Entrance to Loan Room at end of Cart Barn. activities (the Pancake Breakfast and Can Recycling Program), donations, and a grant from the SCV Foundation. After extensive research, a software program, necessary computers and hardware were purchased, and a specially-designed cabinet/counter was constructed in the Loan Room. A website for requesting future reservations has been designed and a link was launched on the SCOV website October 1. Registered SCOV members can now link to that site and request reservations. An email confirmation will be sent within a week. All check-in and out services, future reservations, and requests for reservations through the website are handled by Loan Room volunteers during normal hours: Tuesday and Thursday from 8 to 9 AM. The next time you have a temporary emergency, think of your CAC Loan Room and be assured that this unique and free service will be available to help.

As the excitement grows over the joint courtyard project with the Glass Club, we offer an image from one member who belongs to both clubs and has already melded the two media. This is not the first time this has happened. Both disciplines are based in fire. Whether fused or stained, the original glass is made hot, and the clay is matured even hotter. Glazes are based on glass formation which further tightens the close relationship. We can barely contain our enthusiasm as we join in this project. The fairy house at left made by Resa Lankes, incorporates both techniques. So here we go; another season has begun with gusto.

I am so glad that the busy season is coming, maybe I’ll catch my breath then. We have been working to teach and learn new techniques, doing glass fusing, making jewelry from glass and seeing some lovely pieces of stained glass go out of here. Our membership keeps growing and we have more to learn, teach, do and get ideas brought by our new members. Lei has given some really cool ideas on jewelry that give us that “Why didn’t I think of that?” moment. Wye has run a test class (design your own glass) that will be a hit with the members. I love learning these new ways to think outside the box and see the finished product. Come see for yourself and you too will be intrigued. Club meeting Wednesday, October 5, 1 PM, Activity Center/Hohokam. Ornament Exchange coming in December.

In a recent class, Judy Bjorling, quotes Rudolph Flesch, “Creative thinking may simply mean the realization that there’s no particular virtue in doing things the way they have always been done.” What creative thinking have you done during the summer? Plan to share your summer work with members during the fall as former residents return and new members come to the art studio.

Poetry is an excellent venue for exploring life’s significant questions. Club member Adrian Korpel offers an unusual explanation for how the universe began and posits how it might end in a poem entitled The Cosmic Cuckology which employs invented words derived from unusual combinations. The poem is extremely creative and intentionally provocative as seen below. “On the quantum stroke of minus/ the cosmic egg broke/ and we appeared:/strange brainy birds with threadbare souls./ After some dumb twittering/we clevered up to tweeting/in the complex chirpolese/of God and love./ Soon we hit upon dislike,/loathing, anger, and hate,/which our false neighbors/deserved bigtimely/ In short order fire was invented,/hunting, arrows, science/guns, war, lies, epics,/and heromania./ War became the holy duty/we owed to the fathergod/who required bloodfealty/counted in corpses./ Next we heated Earth by slowfire/denied it by cuckoospeak/lost it by nothing/and disappeared/ on the quantum stroke of plus.”

Fall is finally here and it’s time to think about avoiding the stress of the holidays by exercising. Twice a week we have a professional instructor come to SCOV and teach a Joseph Pilates core (abdomen and back) strengthening class. These Pilates workouts affect our entire system of bones and joints and are not just sets of simple exercises. Your abdominal muscles, arms, back, hips and more are strengthened and toned. This allows for better posture, flexibility, strength and balance. The classes are one-hour total body workouts and also include a lot of stretching. Because these are Pilates mat classes for seniors, all exercise movements can be modified for different levels of performance. Our instructors can be very helpful with this. The cost is only $8/ class and the annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or stop by and watch one of our classes first. For information call Mary Ayers.

Our new class session begins Thursday, October 6. Most of us think of Tai Chi as a way to prevent falls, improve breathing, and reduce stress, but it is so much more. In these classes we not only enjoy learning Tai Chi form, we also improve our balance, flexibility and strength and even learn meditation skills. Our instructors, Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich, stress the use of Tai Chi in daily life Research by Tufts University School of Medicine credits Tai Chi with decreased pain, improved sleep and mood, and better quality of life. Would you enjoy Tai Chi? Why not try it out? The October 6 class is free. Newcomers, please contact Gail Barr for class details.

Counting Your Steps? Join the Tipster Collation

On the last weekday of each and every month, volunteers who live in SCOV gather in the Auditorium to help place inserts in the upcoming new Tipster. Interested in just how many steps folks take in order to complete the project, people were asked to wear their Fitbit or other tracking device to see how far volunteers actually walk while performing the task. At the end of collating in the “test month,” people turned in their numbers, and an average number of steps taken by walkers was determined to be 2,094. Ten thousand (10,000) steps equates to approximately five (5) miles, so by helping out each month, volunteers get in over one mile of walking exercise; all while socializing with friends, having fun and helping out a good cause. The particular month that the “test” was run had nineteen inserts being placed in approximately 2,700 Tipsters. The time spent actually walking to do the collating was just under an hour and a half. Each month would be a little different depending on the number of inserts. Do think about coming to help each month, as we have a fun time and it’s an excellent way to get in some exercise while doing a little walking. Dates for doing the monthly collating are posted on the bulletin boards, and sent out as reminders to homeowners each month via computer email.
