Association News

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board Of Directors Ted Hood, azted@outlook.com The Benefits of Long-Range Planning by Ted Hood SCOV initiated a comprehensive strategic planning process as a result of our 2009 Long Range Plan. This was followed by two Strategic Process Committees, another Long Range Planning Committee, and the work of several other committees. Now, with over seven years’ experience, we know that long-range planning works and works very well. Consider some of the outcomes: • New and more marketable names for our community, golf course and restaurant • Upgraded signage and development of an SCOV “brand” • A greatly expanded and world-class Aquatics & Fitness Center • A paid librarian who has computerized Library operations • New pickle ball and bocce ball courts • A new Pro Shop • Catalina Vista and Desert Oasis renovations • Installation of solar panels to reduce SCOV’s electrical bills • A new restaurant, lounge and covered patio • Increased Capital Fund contributions from new owners which will fund future improvements as well as increasing our Asset Reserve Fund. Renovation planning of the Activities Center will begin this fall, future needs of our golf course are being studied and a new Long Range Planning Committee will soon begin its work of ensuring an ongoing effort to guarantee that SCOV is the community of choice for active adults. Long range planning works because of committees made up of dedicated resident experts. Our committees value resident input and also emphasize data collection from a variety of external sources including prospective buyers, realtors, active adult publications and other communities. Residents with strategic planning skills and a strong interest in the future of SCOV are invited to apply for membership on the Long Range Planning Committee.

General Manager - Bob Mariani bmariani@suncityorovalley.com 917-8080 Activities Galore The summer months and warm weather are coming to an end, as are the remodeling of the restaurant/lounge, the installation of the solar panels, and the Catalina Vista construction project. Although maintenance, updating and renovation to the common areas buildings are continually required, the plan is to complete these mid-to large-size projects in time for the dramatic increase in membership and HOA business activities. Every year about this time, the more than 100 clubs begin gearing up, our committees that number about 25, along with our Board, return to their regularly-scheduled meetings and a wide array of other general, social and business meetings resume. As I’m sure most of you know, all of these fantastic activities cause a huge demand on the SCOV facilities and staff to ensure that all events are properly scheduled and set up. Our Membership is encouraged to be active. Therefore, all of the events and meetings that take place in SCOV facilities are expected and are very desirable. At the same time, everyone is asked to keep in mind that many issues can and do arise that make it very challenging to please everyone all of the time. For example, one of the projects noted or other projects that may come along may be delayed, resulting in room closures, or there may be requests to re-schedule a function. Issues such as this result in moving or, in some cases, cancelling an event, creating a great deal of displeasure. Although 98% of the activities in SCOV take place without a hitch, glitches are inevitable on rare occasions. If an issue comes up with scheduling or setting up your meeting/ event, we want to receive your input so that efforts may be made to best assure problems don’t arise in the future. At the same time, we ask for your understanding and realization that there are many balls to juggle in order to assure all goes well with every event. Our staff does an excellent job keeping the membership happy, yet on a rare occasion, we may drop one of those balls.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! SCOV Ambassador Tours by Lou Gard

The exact start of the Ambassador program has been lost over time. However, it is believed that it was started in the late 1990s with a walking tour to interested visitors. In 2006, Nancy Sweeney assumed the program and started giving driving tours in her four-seat golf cart. In 2009, the Board authorized the purchase of a used six-seat cart for use by the Ambassadors. In 2014, a new GEM ecar was purchased. Nancy recruited other residents to assist with the tours, and she wrote up the first tour route and talking points. When a visitor came into the Welcome Center and wanted a tour, Kathy Peabody or one of the office assistants would call an Ambassador to check the availability to give a tour. Quite often this required several phone calls before locating an Ambassador who was available to do the tour. This was a cumbersome process, but it was used for several years until the present on-call volunteer system was implemented. Presently three tours are scheduled Monday–Friday 9:30 AM, Noon and 2:30 PM. The Ambassadors schedule themselves for any tours they are available. Kathy contacts the scheduled Ambassador should a visitor request a tour. Due to the summer heat, the 2:30 slot is not offered. Tours can be scheduled on Saturday and Sunday by appointment. Ambassadors gather for a recent photos of some of the ambassadors with the current six-seater cart. Currently more than 30 Ambassadors participate in the program. A tour begins at concludes at the Welcome Center. Assistant Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 917-8070 Board Pays Restaurant Staff During Down Time As with any project, unanticipated issues occur. Such was the case with the restaurant renovation between the transition of Phase I, (lounge remodel) to Phase II (dining room remodel). In preconstruction meetings and throughout Phase I, the restaurant operation was never supposed to be closed. Then the delay in manufacturing of the panoramic doors stopped service in the lounge, and the necessity to start Phase II stopped service in the restaurant. Our restaurant staff worked in the kitchen area on a limited basis, but many were without work during this period. During this time, staff was provided information on filing for unemployment which can be sought after seven days, but many of the staff did not pursue this option because the project seemed to be on the verge of opening service in the lounge. SCOV does not have a provision to pay staff when they are not working. Due to this, our General Manager, Bob Mariani, requested a special Board meeting on this matter, and the Board approved a reasonable wage for time off. In addition, residents have made donations which will also be distributed to the staff as well. The Board may also be considering a policy to provide some option for paying staff for a SCOV-created cessation of work (such as a restaurant closure). The staff is appreciative for the Board’s support during this time.

Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 917-8077 This and That Where did the summer go? It’s hard to believe that fall, as we know it, is here in SCOV. The staff has worked very hard all summer with many projects and plans for future months. I want to give you some dates that are always being asked: The Courtyard Sale is always the last Saturday in March (March 25, 2017), and Shred It Day is a Sun City Vistoso Foundation event and that is usually the Saturday near or after April 15. I hope you will mark these dates now for future use. We are seeing more and more new faces in SCOV. If you see a new resident, be sure to say hello and welcome to paradise.

Last month we celebrated the one year anniversary of computerized circulation. The first year of operating with the new Evolve online software has been remarkable. During that time 31,946 items were checked out, and 2,821 reserves were successfully completed. I’m proud of how our volunteers have risen to the challenge and delighted at the number of residents who have mastered placing items on reserve from home. Next time you check our database from home, look for these new items: Smooth Operator by Stuart Woods and A Great Reckoning by Louise Penny in fiction, Family Tree by Susan Wiggs and Bullseye by James Patterson in large print, The Black Widow by Daniel Silva, and Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi in audiobook, and The Nice Guys (Russell Crowe) and I Saw the Light (Elizabeth Olsen) in video. Thanks to all who support our ongoing media sales with donations and purchases. Your help keeps our library operating.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 917-8073 How can I prevent injuries? To avoid injuring yourself during exercise, don’t try to do too much too soon. Start with an activity that is fairly easy for you, such as walking. Do it for a few minutes a day, several times a day. Slowly increase the amount of time and the intensity of the activity. For example, increase your walking time and speed over several weeks. Start every workout with a warm-up. This will make your muscles and joints more flexible. Spend five to ten minutes doing some light stretching exercises and brisk walking. Do the same thing when you’re finished exercising until your heart rate returns to normal. Pay attention to your body. Stop exercising if you feel out of breath, dizzy, faint, nauseous or if you feel pain. Talk with your family doctor if you have questions or think you have injured yourself seriously. Special Note From the AFC Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday at 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis for questions or problems with the AFC. Tuesday, September 13, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen Wednesday. Wednesday, September 14, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen Thursday.

Save the day and time. The AHC (Active Health Committee) will once again sponsor a Balance Class starting in midOctober Mondays, 10:30-11:30 AM, AFC/Studio 1 and 2. This structured and standardized program includes simple Tai Chi principles and movements; it is recommended by the CDC and National Council On Aging to improve balance and to prevent falls. Are you wondering if this is for you? Join us if you: 1. Know you have a balance problem or have fallen 2. Wobble when you turn quickly 3. Have pain or stiffness (who doesn’t?) 4. Have difficulty standing on one leg for 10 seconds (check both legs carefully) 5. Wish to gently exercise in a fun, safe, and supportive en vironment. The instructor, Heather Chalon, is a Senior Trainer in the Tai Chi for Health Institute. She is going to help us develop our own SCOV instructors for this program, so we can offer the class more often. If you are searching for a new purpose and/ or wish to serve others while caring for yourself, contact the AHC chair. See the October Tipster for more details.

Architectural Review Janice Strassburg, 520-338-2568, janicestrassburg@gmail.com Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM, WC3

In the hierarchy of governing documents within SCOV, our newly-adopted Master Declaration is supreme. The ByLaws tie into the Master Declaration. The Development Standards that are formulated by ARC (Architectural Review Committee) are the documents that NP (Neighborhood Pride) uses as their guideline as they patrol our community. ARC is guided by the rules and regulations of our Master Declaration, the ByLaws and the Development Standards with very little deviation. If you happen to plan on installing solar, there are specific guidelines to keep the hardware as unobtrusive as possible. The numbers of improvements to the exterior of property is substantial. It behooves you to be aware of these standards before you begin any exterior construction. We are here to help you get the project completed with your interests at heart and to protect your legal rights.

You can go into the library for a personalized introduction or just go on your computer at home and “play” with it. Look up a book or author to see what we have available. You can tell if it’s available right now or when it’s due to be returned. There are lots of new materials being added weekly. Come and see what’s new. Then join The Friends of the Library and help support the acquisition of even more new materials.

Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell 825-5763 Meeting Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1 The Loan Room is located at the end of the Cart Barn and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. Both reservations for future needs and pick up for current needs can be done at that time. Reservations can be made up to two months in advance. Most medical equipment can be borrowed for two months; other items, such as children’s equipment, tables and chairs, etc., have a two-week limit. We are planning to be completely computerized by the beginning of September and hope this will make us more accurate and efficient. It is necessary for you to have your current SCOV card with you for reservations and pickups. We will not have the ability to use the key fob. Thank you for your patience while we have learned the software for this program and your support for the Loan Room in saving your aluminum cans and attending the yearly Pancake Breakfast.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 The Rains Came Our monsoon rains arrived bringing much growth of foliage and many weeds. Please make every effort to stay ahead of the weed situation in your yard, especially desert broom and spurge. Spurge is the low-growing, fast spreading little weed that seems to take over an entire block in just days. Spurge must be sprayed and not pulled in order to eliminate it. For every one that is pulled, two more grow, as their tiny seeds drop off when pulled. Look at the cracks in your sidewalk, driveway, and where the cement meets the asphalt, as that is where spurge is often found. With the rains, new growth on trees occurred. Trees must

be kept trimmed more than seven feet above sidewalks so as not to encroach walkers or block visibility of stop signs at corners. Most bean pods are down now and should be removed from the ground in your yards. Special thanks goes to all who work hard keeping their yards in good shape especially in the summer months. Please keep up the good work.

Properties Chair Ed Zwerling 631-741-9934 ezwerling@yahoo.com Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1 The Solar Generation Project is in its final stages of construction and will soon be providing a large percentage of the HOA’s electrical needs. We will announce various methods for residents to monitor how much energy we are producing. The committee is working with other committees and staff to recommend water conservation initiatives. This year’s monsoons have created a few problems along Chalk Creek, and we will be recommending solutions that will prevent future costly repairs. September is the start of our overseeding on the golf course. The course will be closed September 19-October 9. The course will reopen on Monday, October 10, and will be cart path only through the end of October. During overseeding the Pro Shop will have limited hours of operation. During the week we will be closed, and FridaySunday we will be open 9 AM-2 PM. During our seed process Ventana Canyon is offering our pass holder’s a rate of $32 pp and our non-pass holders a rate of $37 pp which includes a golf car. These times must be booked by the Pro Shop staff and can be booked three days in advance. During overseed would be an excellent time to get your shoes respiked, buy shaft labels to put on your clubs (so they will be returned to you if you lose them) or get your clubs regripped. Walkers may still use the cart paths for their morning or

evening exercise, however, please do not walk on the golf course grass. When we reopen October 10, tee times will begin at 7 AM, and shotgun starts at 8 AM. Tuesdays will now be a crossover which means we will be teeing off on both Holes One and Ten. All walkers and riders must be off the course by 7 AM. Thank you for your cooperation. Effective August 31, we will now be closing the Drving Range early on Wednesday instead of Thursday. Golf course maintenance mows on Monday and Thursday. We will once again support the Patriot Golf Day Program. This is a very worthy cause as the monies collected go to the Folds of Honor. This foundation provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation. We ask anyone playing golf or just wishing to donate to come to the Pro Shop and drop a dollar or two in our canister.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063 September marks the end of the summer in regards to golf course maintenance in southern Arizona. Starting in the spring, all attention is focused on growing and establishing the Bermuda grass while eliminating winter rye grass. That process changes in the month of September. The Bermuda grass is slowed down and slowly prepared for overseeding and a return of the winter rye grass. The Bermuda grass growth is slowed down with growth regulators, a reduction of fertilization, and cultural practices like verticutting. This process slowly reduces the thickness of the Bermuda canopy to allow for better infiltration of rye grass seed with less aggressive seedbed preparation during overseeding. All the work performed during the summer is to not only provide a great playing surface but also to provide a good seedbed during overseeding. When the canopy is too thick, the rye seed gets stuck too far away from the soil surface and can’t get roots established. This results in a thin rye grass canopy that doesn’t look good when the Bermuda eventually turns brown in the winter. This summer the Bermuda grass was very healthy and established much quicker than previous years. However, the green fairway on Hole Four and the tee fairway on Hole Five required more repairs than the rest of the golf course, so they will not be overseeded this winter. The tee fairway on four and the green fairway on Five will be overseeded, so technically only one hole is going to be skipped this winter.

Golf Advisory Chair Tim Kelley 734-645-8199 First Wed., 2 PM, WC3 GAC (Golf Advisory Committee) resumes monthly meetings on September 7. The GAC provides the communication link among the golfers, administrative management and the SCOV Board. Come to the meetings or express your concerns to one of the committee members so that they can be discussed and the appropriate recommendations made to management. September also begins the return of SCOV residents from summer vacations and early returnees of the seasonal residents. Overseeding will be completed in early October, and the number of daily rounds will begin to increase. Please be mindful of pace of play for everyone’s enjoyment.

The doors were delivered to the SCOV Woodworking Club, where Lauren Strassburg, Larry Miller and Norm Wells oversaw their restoration. Gosh, I am out of breath with all the workshops and classes for new residents and those that just want to learn something new. It seems that we have a beginners fused glass class almost once a week from our resident teacher, Wye Mace. If you have not tried this art form yet, think about this: you can learn to cut glass, build a dish or make jewelry in a few hours. This is a soft art that is forgiving once placed in the kiln. From here, you can move on if you like. We also have stained glass classes. Stop in the studio some time and check out all we have to offer. This a social group that has many ideas to help you along. As usual, a big thanks to all the members who volunteer to help by washing towels, cleaning up, firing kilns, and sharing all knowledge.

Water Media Pres. John Ebert 818-1830 Tue., 9 AM-4 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

The summer rain produces fantastic clouds that inspire paintings, as well as scenes from parades, park games, bike trails and library visits. Subjects are abundant from which to select favorites paint. Pick up your brush and begin that dialogue. Then prepare to share your results at meetings on Tuesday mornings.

Probably the most useful and interesting items in that library are the myriad videos covering everything from the simple process of gluing two boards together to making complex decorative items, toys, furniture, musical instruments, etc. Our club’s website recently published a small list of examples of such videos. Under the Links menu, click or tap on Tipster Examples. Each item on that page is a link to a video. If you want to look for videos that apply to your cur-

Note: We will meet September 5 at the Activity Center/ Navajo. Any further change of venue will be communicated via email. Our October 3 meeting will be at Catalina Vista as usual. Our book selection is Far From The Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy, the first critical success for Hardy and the first of his major novels to be set in the fictional county of Wessex in south/southwest England. The novel tells the story of a fiercely independent unmarried woman who has the enviable problem of picking from three suitors. October: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, the story of two French sisters, separated by age, and experience and who unbeknownst to one another, take on dangerous missions to help the resistance in WWII France. This book is breathtakingly beautiful and celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women.

Poets Corner Esther Berlot 818-6463 lberlot@q.com Mon., 10 AM-Noon, Desert Oasis

Living in SCOV can be a positive and vitalizing experience. Nonetheless, age does tend to wither us. Poets Corner member Christa Lubatkin aptly captures much of what happens in these excerpts from her poem entitled Benched: “I’ve landed on the old folks bench/settled in with delirious optimists/sad complainers/the forgetful/and those living in the past/I’m content to let day follow day/and the years pile up on my face…My plans don’t go much/beyond the end of the week…the neurologist had no answer/about my disappearing words/I assured him that never once/have I found my bifocals/next to the eggs in the fridge/why then, are my children leafing/through slick brochures/promising Gracious Living/I like it here on the bench/and hope that when the call ‘next’/comes it won’t be meant for me.”

Writers Club Paul Mercer 520-333-3490 pawmerc@gmail.com Second and Fourth Fri., 1-3 PM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Lemmon

We write to have fun as we exercise our minds. A different subject is suggested for each meeting but you can write on the subject of your choice if you desire. We do limit the content to one sheet of paper printed two sides, double spaced using 12 pt. type. Then we discuss each piece so bring about ten copies for the discussion. We do have fun and hope you can join us. Subject for September: Should the State of Arizona encourage the use of solar power throughout the state?

Why should you be interested in the Arizona Corporation Commission? Because it is responsible for final decisions on granting or denying utility rate adjustments, enforcing transportation safety and public service requirements and approving securities matters, including the registration of corporations doing business in Arizona. Come hear Tom Chabin and Bill Mundell who are running for seats on the commission. We have candidates running for School Board to President of the United States, and they all need our support. Attend our meetings or call the Pima County Democratic Office at (520) 326-3716 to ask how you can get involved. They will be thrilled to hear from you and you will be glad you did. The primaries are over, the votes tabulated and now the hard work for your candidate is starting. Hopefully your favored one is going on to the November election. I would urge all of us to keep reminding others of the responsibility of voting but also we should inform ourselves of the variables of each candidate’s position. If your candidate was not successful getting past the primary, please look to those still running and help them in these last two months. Support them with your financial contributions, post a yard sign, have palm cards available to hand out to your neighbors, get a bumper sticker. All of your efforts will help toward their success in November. The last day to register for the General Election is October 10.

Pilates Mary Ayers 638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

Summer is a great time to commit to a new core strengthening exercise routine. Why not try Pilates? Small summer classes offer you a great opportunity to learn. Even 40 years after his death, the Joseph Pilates exercise system is in very high demand. We offer these classes twice per week. People ask “Can the benefits, which come from the strengthening and stretching exercises we do, really develop the body’s core (abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is a firm “Yes.” Additional benefits you will notice when taking the group mat classes, specifically designed for seniors, are better balance, more muscle tone and increased stamina. Our classes are taught by two experienced instructors, and the cost is only $8/class with annual club dues of $20 pp. Please join us, or just come by and watch. Call Mary Ayers.

Senior Olympics Swim Team Gordon Gillin 825-8261 swimgordon2@gmail.com

Our next class session will begin October 6. If you would like to improve your balance, flexibility and strength, why not join us? Most of us think of Tai Chi as a way to prevent falls, improve breathing, and reduce stress, but it is so much more. Harvard Medical School Health publication stated that Tai Chi is medication in motion. Research by Tufts University School of Medicine credits Tai Chi with decreased pain, improved sleep and mood and better quality of life. Our instructors, Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich, stress the use of Tai Chi in daily life. Newcomers, please contact Peggy Lombard for class details.
