From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Novel Virus, Novel Times by Jim Mitchell In these days of coronavirus, meeting an early April deadline for the May Tipster column with meaningful updates presents a challenge. But Dickens’ opening line of A Tale of Two Cities comes to mind. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” Under the best of times comes everyday scenes of more people out in our beautiful weather walking, riding bikes and driving golf carts while waving to all those passing by. I’ve enjoyed seeing inspirational messages and hopscotch squares chalked on sidewalks. Helpful Hands volunteers have been delivering take-out meals from our restaurant. The Thimblelenas and individual residents have made hundreds of masks to donate. And neighbors have been helping neighbors in new ways. The Board and staff have been carrying on responsibilities as well as possible under the circumstances. (Whoever heard of Zoom meetings before coronavirus?) One of the crucial responsibilities of the Board is to maintain, preserve and enhance the assets and facilities of the Association. Assets include your monies, properties and employees. Our Contingency Fund currently has $193K, well within the goal of 2.5 to 3.5 percent of the previous year’s budget. But in these uncertain times, we need options. So, the Board has decided to put expected revenues from the Comcast agreement into the Contingency Fund, adding approximately $450K to it sometime in the beginning of next fiscal year. The Capital Fund is projected to end the fiscal year with $1.7M. No major capital expenses are planned this fiscal year. The Asset Reserve Fund is projected to end the fiscal year with a balance of $4.9M after scheduled expenditures of $1.8M. That’s within the goal of maintaining the balance at a funded level between 60 and 70 percent. The Activity Center Renovation Committee is continuing to review architectural concepts to present to the community in the fall. The cost, construction start-date and funding sources have not been determined.

In an emergency, we have just under $3.1M in cash and cash equivalent accounts and $961K in short-term investments. Our most important assets are employees. Although we have had to cut some hours, especially in the restaurant, we have reassigned employees to duties such as deep cleaning of buildings and other maintenance. We have also applied for an SBA loan of $616K under the Paycheck Protection Program. Those loans have one percent interest and the principal and accrued interest can be forgiven if we maintain staff at the same level as before. Bottom line… we’ll continue analyzing, adjusting, meeting and communicating as conditions change for the best or worst of times. Stay healthy!
General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Managing in a Pandemic It has been a new and interesting process as I/we navigate the uncharted waters of managing a large operation such as SCOV during a global
pandemic. Jim Mitchell’s article does a good job of discussing the financials of the Association. I would like to address the human side of managing through this most difficult time. We are all aware The Views Restaurant has been curtailed in the service they can provide by our State Governor’s Executive Order as have activities and use of facilities. This has impacted some staff in time worked and the resultant decrease in wages earned. We’ve invited staff who have reduced work hours to work in other departments when possible to get more hours or to work in their departments doing jobs they were not hired for but the work needs to get done, such as deep cleaning. We’ve cut some services being provided to SCOV and put others on hiatus until we see better days, e.g. DISH TV services and janitorial services. I fully recognize the fact that these cuts to staff working time has a major impact on them. I worry and stay up nights trying to find ways to minimize this impact. These employees are my family, and it breaks my heart to be put in this situation that none of us could have predicted and yet is so impactful to so many in a negative way. There are so many questions we don’t have answers to. How long can we continue as we are? When will this pandemic slow down and be over? No one knows these answers, but until we come to the end of this long tunnel, I can promise you that I and the Board of Directors will do our level best to manage and lead our community through these turbulent waters. We care about each of you and want what is best for you and our community. We will do all in our power to get us through, and with all of your help and support, we will come to the other end of the tunnel, breaking through to a beautiful day where the sun still shines.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Trash Talk As we prepare to bring on board a single provider of waste and recycling in SCOV, here are some things you need to know: 1. There’s a web page for that. See www.suncityorovalley. com/members/services/trash for information about our new waste/recycling program. 2. Collection service with Republic begins July 1, 2020. 3. $134.40 will be included in your annual homeowner dues to cover the annual waste/recycling services. Dues invoices will come out around June 1. 4. Service Days – Details are still being worked out on that, but you will have service on either Tuesday or Thursday. The route is being set for minimal truck passes on each SCOV street. As we get closer to July 1, we will begin publishing the routes. 5. Bins – You should have responded to the bin order by now. If you have not, please fill out the form on the trash web page under “Bin Orders.” If you know of a neighbor who doesn’t email, please offer to fill the form out for them if it hasn’t been done already (much appreciated). 6. Who cancels my current service? a. Republic customers – You don’t need to do anything except to have filled out the bin order form, even if you’re keeping your same bins. Republic will transition you to the Association’s bill. b. Non-Republic customers – You are responsible for cancelling your waste/recycling services with your current provider. 7. Waste Management $75 Pick Up Fee – For those of you who had Waste Management, they had instituted a pickup fee. The Association has negotiated that fee down to $35. 8. Seasonal resident concerns – If you’re gone for the season, you can either have your bins delivered now and have someone put them away for you, or you can contact Republic when you’re getting ready to return to set up bin delivery. The web page will have information on how to contact Republic.
Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 What Can I Say? SCOV is a community filled with fun and activities. During this time of stay at home, we need to step outside the box in planning. I have tried to encourage things such as “wave to your neighbor at 5 PM, “driveway happy hours on Sundays,” “sidewalk chalk walk,” “sidewalk safari” and more. All of these things are done to have something to look forward to each week. For many, staying indoors is a hard thing to do, and keeping people in isolation can bring on depression. I hope you are taking part in what I have been planning. We are all new to these problems, and together we will be back bigger and stronger in the future. Blessings to all.

Just in case we are still homebound, this is a friendly reminder to take advantage of the time at home to give your landscape and home exterior conditions a review. If those pesky weeds are popping up, fruit has fallen to the ground, suckers have turned your tree into a bush or tree debris covers the walkway or driveway, take a few minutes to either arrange for a landscaper to address those problems, or get the exercise yourself if your health allows it. Neighborhood Pride Committee members have not been allowed to tour during this period. Just because you may not have received a Courtesy Notice does not mean that your property is pristine. We are proud of our community’s appearance, but now especially, it takes every resident to fill in the gaps so that it continues to look beautiful. Thanks for doing your part.

The Library has been quiet enough over the past weeks to please even the strictest librarians from our childhood. In the days before the closure, we relaxed our limits on how many items could be checked out, resulting in many of our shelves being half-emptied. On March 17, the last day we were open, 627 books and movies were checked out, which is five times as many as the daily average during the previous weeks. The puzzle shelves were almost emptied, and magazines, unbarcoded paperbacks and sale items went out the door in droves. Our volunteers did a magnificent job

handling the volume of business. Even though the Library is closed, the book drop has been kept open, and items are coming back at a steady pace. We had nearly 2,000 barcoded items checked out at the time we closed. If they all came back at once, we would have to stack books on the floor, and videos on the lowest, hard-to-reach shelves. Many residents have dearly missed access to our collections, whether it be books or puzzles, videos or magazines, audio books or sale items, and the volunteers have been anxious to come back to work. I can’t wait to welcome everyone back. I have posted Library Tips offering suggestions for keeping busy and mentally active during the shutdown. They run the gamut from where to get books, movies, crossword or jigsaw puzzles online, to various stress-relieving activities like yoga, coloring and writing, to researching your family tree or holding book club meetings on Zoom. You can see all of these tips on the SCOV website by clicking on Library and scrolling down.
Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Exercises That You Can Do At Home Without Equipment While doing laundry, raise the laundry basket shoulder high 10 times. While the coffee brews, do wall squats, but don’t let your knees go out past your toes. While at the sink to wash your hands, do standing pushups using the kitchen countertop. When emptying the dishwasher, do squats; again, do not let your toes go past your knees and keep those thighs parallel. Think of it as sitting into a chair. While down on the ground looking for that shoe, do a plank or a modified plank. Lie face down on the floor, then push up your body so just your toes and forearms are on the ground. If that’s too tough, keep your knees on the ground as well. I am looking forward to seeing everybody back in the gym or one of the many classes. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Once we have reopened, orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, May 12, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. They will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, May 13, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC), like all SCOV committees, has been on hiatus for the past several weeks. Katy Mosier, Community Services Coordinator, continues to approve in-house submittals electronically for projects such as garage door replacement, house painting, flat work, etc. SCOV staff have collected submittals that were either dropped off or mailed to the Administration office. The ARC will review these submittals in the order received once the committee members are back to doing business as normal. ARC submittal forms are available on the SCOV website under the Committees, ARC link. Need help with your submittal? Contact Katy for assistance. We are always here to answer your questions. Thanks to the Thimblelenas Club for sewing face masks for The Views Restaurant staff who are delivering food to cars, another step in making everyone feel safer. Initial daily revenues of up to $2K have resulted from take- out food and the Marketplace convenience store orders. Staff is also keeping busy cleaning and with on-the-job training.

To prevent busy signals or delays with take out-orders, call 30-40 minutes ahead, rather than waiting until 5 PM to place your order. More phones and staff are now available for ordering, as management works through these unchartered waters. Your patience is appreciated. Expect menu changes, as Aalt learns what you want, and which items are holding their quality while being re-heated. A special thanks to the Sun City Vistoso Foundation for asking The Views Restaurant to provide 220 take-out meals for day and night shift workers at Oro Valley Hospital on Friday, April 17. Meals were delivered by Vistoso Helpful Hands volunteers. This provided much needed revenue, gave our staff extra work, a generous gratuity and the opportunity to show off our restaurant for future take-out meals. We welcome more opportunities to help the surrounding community during this difficult time.

So what is Friends of the Library (FOL) all about? The basic function of FOL is to raise money for the Library collection: books, videos, audio books, subscriptions. Membership in FOL is our first fundraiser. Membership makes you a Friend with benefits. Members of FOL can attend two Great Reads events each year for free (November and January), buy tickets for the annual Home Tour a day early, buy a ticket for the bus to the Tucson Festival of Books for $5, and attend our new summer event: Great Views, film reviews and previews. The other major fundraiser is the annual SCOV Home Tour. These activities create the bulk of the money used to buy books, videos, audios and supplies to keep our Library one of the premier amenities in SCOV. Thank you all for your support and participation. You’re the best.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 A Very Strange Spring Spring this year has been very strange in many ways. Before we know it, summer will be here, and we bid farewell to those who leave our community for the upcoming hot months ahead. Remember to have someone look after your home and yard while you are away, even if you are only gone for part of the time. A messy yard is an indication that you are gone and puts your home and belongings in what could be an unsafe situation. During monsoon season, weeds grow in abundance and need to be removed as quickly as possible. With the upcoming storms, there are times when it’s necessary to reach homeowners due to roof tile damage and/or trees down. Don’t forget to leave your summer address and phone number with Administration should someone need to contact you. Have a great summer knowing that your community and home will look just as nice when you return as when you left.

The last two months have been a challenge for us all. We are proud of how our Association has handled this crisis while trying to keep us safe and healthy along with handling daily business. Thank you to all of our Board members and staff. The Posse has not been patrolling for over a month in order to keep our members safe, but we are well protected by the Oro Valley Police Department (OVPD). We are grateful for their efforts on our behalf. This pandemic is stretching their resources and adding additional stress to the entire department, but they continue to serve SCOV. We thank them

If you don’t feel comfortable making the call, call Posse Chair Linda Simōn at the number listed above and she will be happy to call them. The Greens Reconstruction Committee’s plan is coming to fruition after a year and a half of planning. The contractor began construction on Monday, April 20. The scheduled completion of construction is July 15. The goal is to be playing on the new greens and practice facilities by Saturday, September 5. We will remain open during the reconstruction phase playing on temporary greens. To view the temporary scorecard, go to www.theviewsgolfclub.com and go to Golf Course Reconstruction. We encourage you to play during the reconstruction phase experiencing something new and different from our shortened but challenging par 68 golf course. Look for our addedvalue golf pricing coming for all residents and public players during this time.

There is a lot going on in the world right now with the coronavirus pandemic. There is also a lot going on with our golf course. Unless something drastic changes with the virus restrictions, the construction of the greens will be started by now. Prior to construction, the golf course staff removed the necessary vegetation and trees impacted by the project, removed irrigation sprinkler heads and parts in the construction area for reuse later to reduce costs, created temporary greens for the golfers to use during construction, and sprayed herbicides to kill the existing greens and surrounds. The golf course is also going through a critical time of the year when the overseeded turf is transitioned from the winter overseed to the summer Bermuda grass. Despite being very busy with the construction project, the staff needs to perform many of our annual maintenance tasks. Chemicals have been applied since March to reduce the competition of the ryegrass. Fairways have been verticut multiple directions to open the turf canopy to allow sunlight down to the Bermuda grass. Tees are being aerified and topdressed with sand to alleviate compaction and provide a better growing environment for the underlying Bermuda grass. Starting in May, the fairways will be aerified and topdressed heavily. This process has been performed every summer and has been very successful establishing the Bermuda grass. If any areas transition poorly, they will be sprigged or sodded. This process will be taking place while the greens are being built, so please show patience during this time.
Golf Advisory Chair Beth Allen 520-639-8845 Sep.-May, first Wed., 2 PM, WC3
The greens reconstruction is well on its way to improving the golf course and play for years to come. We continue to ask for everyone’s patience and cooperation while the course is under construction. Since this project started earlier than planned, it will give the course ample time for new greens to be ready for league play in the fall. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, leagues were unable to finish their play and championships for the season. Since the course did stay open, individuals have been allowed to play. For many of us it has been great to be out of the house and in the beautiful spring weather. I would like to thank everyone who served on the Golf Advisory Committee this past year. We serve an important communication link with golfers, nongolfers, Pro Shop, maintenance crew and the administrative staff. We wishing all a fabulous summer.

I hope you are staying safe and healthy. During these times I am reminded of a quote: “If life were predictable it would cease to be life, and be without flavor.”– Eleanor Roosevelt. As we move through these uncertain times, we will be starting to bring back some of the normality we had when we were a full-service restaurant. We have already started with prime rib on Saturday, and an Easter special. Next we will look for other ways to keep your lives interesting at the restaurant. The dramatic worldwide effects of the coronavirus has people looking for ways to contribute and help in their communities. The Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation (SCVC Foundation) found a way to thank medical caregivers at Oro Valley Hospital. In addition, we used SCOV resources and staff who already provide service and help within our community. Oro Valley Hospital suggested their staff would appreciate a donation of meals, since their kitchen is not fully operational. Hospital management provided the requirements and number/type of meals needed. After conferring with The Views Restaurant management and Vistoso Helpful Hands, SCVC Foundation board agreed to cover the price of 220 meals for day and night shifts on Friday, April 17. The Views staff prepared to-go boxes of sandwiches, chips, soda and a cookie. Vistoso Helpful Hands volunteers delivered the meals. SCVC Foundation provided the financial support, of which 100% of the funds were donated by SCOV residents. How about that for a total community project?

As we all know, we’re in a state of flux with the lock down of SCOV facilities. Who knows when we’ll all be together again sewing capri pants, quilts, tote bags, sleep sacks and headbands. Let’s hope it is sooner than later, and we can get back to our normal routines. I know we all miss gathering together to sew, serge and quilt. But this doesn’t mean our members haven’t been busy during this time. Debra Dirks, member of the Thimblelena board, has been orchestrating the sewing of face masks, and many members stepped up to the plate. Thank you Debra. Those of us who haven’t been sewing are using up our yarn stashes to create afgans, hats and scarves. In addition, several quilters have been busy assembling quilts at home. So, we’ve been using our time at home to continue our work for children at risk. Keep calm and carry on. Cheer Bears

Summer already and our Cheer Bear group has seen its many winter workers head back to the cooler parts of the country. We will be suspending our meetings in May. That doesn’t mean that all work will cease, but it will greatly decrease. Starting in June, we will be meeting twice monthly to keep the bears marching. We will be in the Sewing Room if

We want to send out a tremendous thank you to all of the SCOV community for helping us all stay healthy. Thank you for taking the COVID-19 issue seriously. Although we are all feeling withdrawal symptoms from not being able to work or play as we used to, we are finding new and varied ways to fill our time. This too will pass and we will be a stronger community for it. Keep getting take-out from The Views, keep meeting in the street to social distance and share a glass of wine, and keep checking in on your neighbor to see that they are well. Strength comes from being in this together. We hope that this issue of the Tipster finds all of us, and that means our winter guests also, seeing a brighter future. Keep on truckin’.

Looking for ideas about what to do with your extra time? There are great novels available to quench your thirst for genealogy; authors Steven Robinson and Nathan Dylan Goodwin both write suspense novels with a genealogical twist. Have boxes of photos or documents? Take some time to scan these family treasures and share them with your family. Or try your hand at writing – every genealogist has found a wonderful story somewhere. Although the computers in the Genealogy Club Library will be “on vacation” until the Welcome Center is open, FamilySearch.org is free on the web, and you can grow branches on your family tree from the privacy of your home.

Thus, the following excerpt comes from William Wordsworth’s well-known “Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood.” A day in May back then did not include a viral pandemic but his questions are still worth pondering. “This sweet May morning, / And the Children are culling / on every side, / In a thousand valleys far and wide, / Fresh flowers, while the sun shines warm, / And the Babe leaps up on his Mother’s arm:— / I hear, I hear, with joy I hear! / —But there’s a Tree, of many, one, / A single Field which I have looked upon, / Both of them speak of something that is gone: / The Pansy at my feet / Doth the same tale repeat: / Whither is fled the visionary gleam? / Where is it now, the glory and the dream?”

This club is for people who like to cook and socialize over a meal prepared by their fellow club members. Every month brings a new theme and a different group of diners, each of whom prepares a dish for the meal. Last year our themes varied from ones that implied specific culinary traditions (e.g., Mardi Gras) to some that were wide-open to interpretation by the dining group (e.g., “Colors”). Due to the coronavirus, some groups did not hold their scheduled March dinners and our catered season finale was cancelled. But by next fall, we expect to be holding our usual kickoff dinner (catered) and fun dinners in members’ homes. In the meantime, take a look at our website for details and photos. Composing here on an early April day, / Thinking about dancing sometime in May, / Hoping and praying a virus away, / Wondering what’s really proper to say. May we all stay healthy and strong, Until we can gather and get along, / Onto a dance floor, a ballroom throng, / Dance to the sound of your favorite song. / And this too shall pass. Until then, there are many health benefits associated with ballroom dance that can be an important part of keeping seniors happier and healthier: Reducing stress and anxiety levels with ongoing exercise and dancing can improve overall physical condition – muscle tone, flexibility and endurance. Our dance instructor, Christine, says there are free dance lessons available on www.dancevision.com. While we might not be able to practice our frame while keeping proper six-foot distance, we can surely keep working on our steps. Keep on dancing.

Folk dancing is more fun than a treadmill and healthful exercise for balance, muscle, mind, and mood. For most dances we hold hands in a circle to perform non-gymnastic steps to the enchanting music and rhythms of diverse cultures (including our own). Neither prior experience nor a partner is needed. Typical dance sessions consist of 15 folk dances, most with instructions. Folks may always sit out a dance to rest. Drop in to see if this internationally popular dance form is your cup of tea. Also, search FDCSCOV on www.YouTube.com to see us in action online.

The Rock and Roll Club is “sheltering in place” like all the other clubs until further notice. Why don’t we all crank up our favorite rockand-roll golden oldies real loud and dance in our living rooms like nobody’s watching (cause nobody will be)? It’s good for the soul and good for the body. So, until all this has passed “Rock On” (responsibly). In the remotely possible event that the May dance is held, members will be notified by email.

How appropriate was the theme we picked for our May dance, “Happy trails to you... until we meet again.” With the current conditions being what they are, we are not sure when that will be. Now that we have been asked to stay at home, take some time to practice your dance skills with your partner, maybe dancing around your kitchen or out in your garage. We are working on our dance schedule for next season and are happy to announce we have discovered two new bands who are interested in playing for us. We’ll keep you informed as we work out the details. The Dance Class Committee is hard at work planning for next year’s dance classes. Again, not all the details have been worked out, but we will be offering both fall and winter classes. Adios, until we meet again.

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio
Joseph Pilates once wrote “physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.” To get the full benefits of Pilates, a person should understand the basic principles. This takes a little time and patience as the exercises can be different from other forms of exercise, but they are fun, interesting and challenging. Pilates can even become addictive. It teaches proper balance, breathing, focus on your core (your abdomen and back muscles) and movement control. The constant movement from one exercise to another results in your developing more strength and stamina. Even posture is improved. The spine lengthens and joint flexibility and mobility increase. SCOV has two experienced instructors who teach mat Pilates classes and they modify many of the moves for us, if necessary. The cost is only $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Stop by and watch a class. Call Mary.

April 2020 saw our club having to deal with the COVID-19 virus problems. Changes were made to cancel all club-sponsored activities like spring social, training events, round robin tournaments and how we normally play. Keeping social distance when not playing as well as placing the balls in bleach water were also used to mitigate the risk. Players were cautioned to not touch paddles at the end of games and not move others’ paddles in the racks. Many members played at later times in the day or not at all. Some of our seasonal players returned to their summer homes earlier than

What a difference for tennis players and the tennis club since the April Tipster article was written in early March. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Tennis Club events in April, tennis lessons and social events were canceled. In early April, SCOV and State regulations still allowed tennis

play. However, the United States Tennis Association recommended on April 3 that people defer from playing tennis until the COVID-19 risks diminish. Thus, in early April, tennis play in SCOV still was allowed, but persons who choose to play should be extra careful in terms of following CDC guidelines and washing hands immediately after play. The last club tournament of the year, Women’s Doubles, concluded in mid-March. The tournament raised $900 for Seniors for Kids from individuals and the Finalists for Women’s Doubles Tournament with Cheer Bears Tennis Club. With faith that the COVID-19 pandemic will be resolved in coming months, normal Tennis Club activities will resume in October. In the meantime, be safe.

RV adventures in the age of coronavirus
“Go For It” by Barb Satterly We are featuring Monday Advanced Water Volleyball this month. The first three games are picked by team captains. Each week we have different captains. They flip a coin and pick six players per team. After three games, extra people are rotated in and out keeping six on a team at all times. In an advanced game you need to be able to serve a volleyball from the back line and also be able to block or return a serve. Diving and setting the ball to other players is also important. The key to this game is to keep the ball in play and go for it. Like recreational games, we all like to win, but we keep laughter and joking a big part of the game. When facilities reopen, stop by on either a recreational or advanced day and see if these are games you might like to play.

This is not a counseling group but a loving, caring and most importantly a safe environment to share your grief from any loss. It is important to note that grief from any loss comes in many forms: loss of loved one or friend, a pet, home or job, loss of independence, etc. It is not to be taken lightly and is a journey that takes time and is vital to healing and growth. By sharing our grief with others on the same journey the burden is, therefore, lightened.
