From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

What Will Be Our New Normal? by Lou Gard This article is written just as we begin the experiment of reopening; I say experiment, because there are so many unknowns. When listening to the experts, often they cannot agree about the correct thing to do during this crisis. Hopefully, by the time you read this, we will have learned more and made adjustments. We listened to residents who wanted to reopen as fast as possible. Others have counseled us to go slow, due the fact that our aging population makes us more vulnerable. I also want to thank all of you who phoned or emailed the SCOV staff or the Board telling us that you support the actions taken; it is appreciated much more than you can imagine. We know there are many of you who feel things are going way too slow, and you want to get things opened up now. We hear you, appreciate your concerns and correspondence. As the CDC and other health officials apprise Mark of changes, we will move as fast as is prudent. Thank all of you for your understanding as the Board endeavors to do the right thing for all SCOV residents. The Board is also happy to see the number of you who took the time to watch, listen, comment and/or send questions to the Board during the two Internet Zoom meetings. There were almost 300 signed in to the first meeting and almost 170 signed in to the second. If you have not signed in and participated, I encourage you to do so. During our first week of opening, the Library loaned 476 items to 239 residents. The Views Restaurant had about 400 dine-in patrons and a total of 761 meals served, including take-out. The Desert Oasis had 248 walkers and swimmers. We encourage you to use the facilities to the degree of your comfort and willingness to follow the guidelines. Your respect for other residents and staff concerns is greatly appreciated.
Slowed Down But Not Standing Still The pandemic time we’re living in has caused much of the world to slow down or even stop. It is true that this is a time when we limit our social interactions in an effort to protect ourselves and others. Out of necessity, we’ve had to adapt to our situation. We’ve closed facilities, cancelled social events and activities. We meet in front of a computer screen and talk at a distance. We don’t travel as often or freely as we once may have. We may have slowed down, but we are definitely not standing still. For many of us who work here at SCOV, the story is the same. We’ve slowed down in some areas and picked up speed in others. Many of you know the greens project is moving right along. We’ve taken this opportunity to refinish the AFC pool, and the tennis courts at the Desert Oasis have received a new surface coat. Staff that are able to work from home have been working from home. We have started to test certain clubs reopening, and I appreciate everyone’s patience as we slowly reopen the facilities. All decisions are very fluid at this point, and may change as the demand requires. As I write this article in June, I note that yesterday there were 189 new cases in the county and four new deaths. Depending on how the spread of COVID-19 goes, other restrictions may once again be imposed by the county, state or CDC. I’ve heard from many who say we’re not opening fast enough and many who say please keep the opening very slow. One thing I think we all can agree on is we want to keep everyone safe and out of harm’s way. Yes, we may well be slowed down, but we are definitely not standing still. Here’s hoping you and yours are well and safe.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Hot Topics Have you seen the Hot Topics button on the website? It’s the go-to place for the trending discussions in SCOV. Right now, there’s information there about annual mailing, trash, COVID-19, Greens Project, Comcast and Zoom. These are the things the community is asking and talking about and you now have a quick link to those topics. The topics will change as the current news in the community changes. There’s also an FAQ page as well as a place to ask a question of the Board. Communication is one of the most important elements of SCOV, and this is another way information is provided to you.
Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 As of Today Each day, new rules seem to apply to our community. An established rule today may change by the time you read this. We were happy to open the Desert Oasis pool for resident-only use. Soon the AFC pool will open, and once again we ask for your cooperation in following the rules set forth at this time. Staff has worked to keep the safety of residents and employees a priority. Each day brings a new challenge. Your cooperation is appreciated as we navigate these uncharted waters.
Community Services - Katy Mosier kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Update on ARC Application Process The ARC has a new process for submitting an application for your home projects. All submittals are now digital. To use this process, you must already be registered on the SCOV website. 1. Access the SCOV website www.suncityorovalley.com. 2. Click on Members > Member Services > For Your Home > Initial ARC Submittal. 3. Fill out the form. 4. After submitting the form, you will receive a confirmation in your email. 5. You will later receive a message from the Community Services Coordinator. Respond as appropriate. The ARC is now accepting submittals with Town of Oro Valley permits to include: windows and door replacements, rolling shade screens, rolling window screens, rolling shutters, retractable awnings. • Homeowners are responsible for following the governing documents as they prepare their submittal. • Homeowners should include information on materials, colors, dimensions, sketches, pictures, etc., to be used and location of the project on the Plot Plan. Until further notice, all ARC submittals will be reviewed except for the following: room additions which change the footprint of the house, patio covers as defined in the Development Standards Section 2.12 and requested variances to the SCOV governing documents.

Library curbside pickup in SCOV began June 1 and was greeted with joy when 334 books and movies were bagged and wheeled outside on carts for 149 happy residents to pick up. Mornings in front of the Library have become a happy place five days a week as cars, trucks and golf carts roll to a stop to have books or movies placed inside by a gloved and masked staff member. Copies of the Tipster, and BookPage, our monthly book review, are available curbside as well. During the second week of the service, puzzles were added to our offerings. Puzzles cannot be reserved from home, but you can choose from a selection of puzzles on the cart daily or come back the next day to see a different selection. After the first three weeks of service, 941 items have been checked out and delivered curbside to 364 library patrons, 712 returned items have been checked in, and 30 puzzles were matched up with residents looking for something to occupy their time indoors on a hot day. If you need help putting items on hold online, please call the Library Help Desk at 520-917-8064 Monday through Friday, 9 AM-Noon or 1-4 PM. Or view our how-to videos on the Library website.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Sneak Movement Into Your Routine Even though we’re mostly housebound, you can still find ways to incorporate movement into your day. Try to think of physical activity as a lifestyle choice, rather than a designated event. This may help sustain you in times like these, when your schedule has been upended, or you’re not ready to come back to the gym. Use your chores. Household tasks like scrubbing, sweeping, dusting and vacuuming can all add up when done at a brisk pace. They also work the muscles in your arms and legs. Exercise during commercial breaks. Many of us are watching more TV. Make the commercials and credits count by adding in some squats, jumping jacks, push-ups or lunges. Take advantage of pauses during the day when you’re waiting for something to finish or start. You can fire off some arm exercises or practice some yoga poses while the dinner is in the oven or during those 15 minutes before a Zoom meeting. Move around the house more. Walk around while you’re making calls. Take an extra lap or two around the house if you have to put something away. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Once we have reopened, orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, July 14, the AFC spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, July 15, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.
A Word About the COVID-19 Coronavirus Outbreak As this Tipster is published, SCOV buildings and activities are beginning to reopen based on the phased-in plan established by the Board of Directors. Check with your committee or club prior to attending any function.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is now expanding its review of submittals with required Oro Valley permits to include: window and door replacements, rolling shade screens, rolling window screens, rolling shutters and retractable awnings. The ARC will continue reviewing all other submittals except for the following: room additions which change the footprint of the house, patio covers as defined in the Development Standards Section 2.12, and requested variances to the SCOV Governing Documents. Residents will be notified when such submittals are again accepted. The ARC, under COVID-19 conditions, will meet with the homeowner(s) only if they wear a mask and maintain social distancing.
Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory
The paper directory might go to press soon. Or not. Who can predict? So check both the online directory and the paper directory ASAP to ensure your listing is correct. Read “This Week in SCOV” for updates. To update your information, complete the online form “To change your directory listing” or fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center. Is your deceased partner still listed? Many people like to keep their loved one’s name in the directory, for safety or for sentiment. Deceased spouses are removed only when the surviving spouse makes that request. Only you can decide if it’s time to update your listing. Are you a new resident, or have you moved within SCOV? New owners are unlisted by default. This includes those who move within SCOV. FYI: The publisher controls the Business White and Yellow pages, not us. We can’t fix any errors in those sections.

The Views Restaurant reopened slowly with 761 guests and almost $13K in revenue during the first week of June. Tables are socially distanced and most customers are respecting that CDC recommendation. Please wear your mask when approaching entrances and placing your order with waitstaff. Of course, you cannot eat with it on, but after enjoying your meal, show respect to other customers and staff by resuming mask protection. Your immune system may protect you, but not necessarily others, who are more vulnerable. Regular customers from outside SCOV are anxious to return to the restaurant. We want the revenue and will welcome them back as soon as appropriate. Containing this virus, with mask wearing and continued social distancing, is critical. Act responsibly, respect others, be kind to each other and our dedicated staff.

As summer continues, a good book or video takes us to another place or time, maybe where it’s cool and without the worry and frustration of viruses. So keep reading and watching. As Friends of the Library (FOL), we are proud of our support of the Library. Our memberships and participation in FOL activities are essential. The Loan Room will reopen on Thursday, July 2, 8-9 AM, and will continue to be open each Tuesday and Thursday morning at the same time. In preparation, the Loan Room has been cleaned and items sanitized. The new protocols in place will be no more than two residents at one time inside the Loan Room. Other persons will wait safely outside. Staff and residents must wear masks; staff will clean and sanitize regularly but are also asking residents to provide extra sanitizing for each piece of equipment returned to the Loan Room. As our virus situation improves, these protocols will relax somewhat, but we will always request equipment be sanitized before being returned. If you need help loading or unloading items, please bring someone to help you as we will have limited staff available. We will continue to respond to actual medical emergencies outside of open hours, but expect that most requests can be met on our open Tuesdays and Thursdays. Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 It’s Monsoon Season If it hasn’t already, the monsoons will arrive much to the delight of desert plants which so badly need the moisture. With the rains come weeds, and it doesn’t take much to make them pop their heads above ground. Keep an eye on your yard and remove the weeds while they are still small. Rains also cause bushes and trees to grow, seemingly overnight. Be sure to keep them trimmed back and off pedestrian sidewalks. Tree branches must not hang lower than seven feet so as not to interfere with or cause possible injury to walkers. As a reminder, it’s a good idea to look at roofs in your neighborhood, as strong winds can sometimes lift and move the tiles. Be a good neighbor and let others know if you see any roof damage during the summer. With so many of our residents away, it’s helpful to keep an eye out for each other. Be a good neighbor. Take pride not only in your property but those of your neighbors and friends.
What is an artifact? Statues, depictions, artificial flowers, decorative yard ornaments or other man-made artificial decorations are not allowed in front yards. They may be placed on top of front or street-facing courtyard walls. Refer to Development Standards Section 2.17 xiv.

By now you are aware that SCOV is opening in phases. We are following the State of Arizona and CDC guidelines, which are in place in order to keep us safe. We will be wearing masks, hand sanitizing (and/or wearing gloves), gathering in groups of less than 10 people and practicing social distancing of six feet or more. While Posse volunteers are excited about the opening, it presents a challenge. We certainly can wear masks, hand sanitize and wipe down the interior and exterior of the truck; however, social distancing of six feet is obviously impossible in the Posse vehicle. As a result, the Posse is still unable to serve our community on patrols. Please continue to keep an eye out for your neighbors, and if you see a garage door open at night, call to alert them. The Oro Valley Police Department is still patrolling our area, so if you see an officer, thank them for their continued support. As your Posse Chair, I continue to monitor the issue with our General Manager, Mark Wade, and will let you know when we’re back in service. Like all our volunteers, I look forward to serving you. Remember, once we reopen, we can use your help. Six hours a year, two 3-hour patrols, is all the commitment we ask.

The solar systems installed at various SCOV buildings continue to produce electricity, thereby reducing the Association’s utility costs and helping reduce our community’s carbon footprint. The eight systems, with a total capacity of 426 kilowatts, are located throughout the common area parking lots and roofs. Solar provides about 60% of the electrical needs at SCOV-owned facilities. The systems were installed without cost to SCOV and provide a net savings to the Association when compared with purchasing power from TEP. The systems have web-based monitoring that allows nearly real-time viewing of each system’s power output, energy generation and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions avoided, as well as summary reports of daily and monthly performance. Residents can access the data on the SCOV website at the Members > Member Services > Solar Stats drop-down menus. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like the solar systems. We have not been meeting recently, but will resume our monthly meetings when it is appropriate.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063
July is the traditional beginning of the monsoon season in Southern Arizona. In regards to golf course maintenance, the start of monsoons is bittersweet. The good news is the golf course will start to green up after the harsh dry weather of June, due to the increased humidity combined with hot temperatures. However, the monsoons also bring the chance of heavy rain that has the potential of causing serious damage to holes located near washes. Several years ago a thunderstorm generated a large amount of water north of SCOV, but no rain actually fell on the community. The golf course was crowded with many golfers who were unaware of the water running down the washes. Several groups were playing the fourth and fifth holes when the wash began to fill. Two golf carts then tried to cross the wash and got stuck. Luckily, nobody was hurt, but it took a couple hours for the water to recede and get the carts off the golf course safely. Please remember, when these washes are running, they are as powerful as raging rivers. Don’t drive around the course and attempt to cross these washes when the cart path is covered with water or sand. At the minimum, the golf cart will be stranded until the staff is able to rescue the cart. Be aware that during the monsoons, the washes can flow whether it is raining nearby or in the distance, since we are at the bottom of the hill.

The greens reconstruction is ahead of schedule and looking great. With any luck, the monsoon season will give us some much-needed rain and a good start for our new greens. We continue to ask for everyone’s patience and cooperation while the course is under construction. As our course continues to look great thanks to Mike Kropf, our golf superintendent, each of us still needs to be aware to fill our divots and pick up any trash we may see. We appreciate everyone’s help in keeping our course looking super. Just a reminder, with the 10th hole tee box being moved up, the homes to the left of the fairway are now in play more than ever. Greetings. As we gradually reopen SCOV, we are so happy to see all of your smiling faces. We truly appreciate your patience and support during these trying times. We are excited to see our restaurant get back to business as usual. Until then, please remember to respect those around you, wear your masks and stay socially distanced. The farther we get into the reopening, it is easy to slip into the old ways of dining. We must stay vigilant and strong. We will continue to do our heat-and-eat menu until further notice. We hope the demand is enough that we can continue doing this even when we are back to full capacity. In addition, we have a new menu planned for release two weeks after we reopen to full capacity. Our vendors have not yet recovered from this pandemic so certain items are still a little harder to acquire. We will keep you updated through “This Week in SCOV” and through our email blasts as things progress. As a safety precaution for our associates and community, we will not be doing live entertainment until the pandemic is over and we can be at full capacity.

A lot can happen during that period and I’m not going to predict anything, but there is one bit of news that will not change during that time. The Oro Valley Library finally opened on a limited basis. I have finally made contact with them regarding our photo club show. Basically, we missed our slot because of the virus. They chose to just cancel any art shows that were and are scheduled during their shutdown and leave in place any that were “Magnolia Secret” by Val Plumlee scheduled for after their return to normalcy. Hence, the earliest we could reschedule would be for the summer of 2021. Both will remain in view while moving westward over the rest of the summer. The two great constellations of Sagittarius and Scorpius are visible low in the east/southeast and will also move westward during the summer. The center of the Milky Way galaxy is in Sagittarius, and many spectacular star clusters are clearly seen in binoculars. Just west of Sagittarius is Scorpius (which actually looks like a scorpion) and its large star Antares, a red/orange supergiant. We hope you will all stay safe and well, and we will look forward to seeing you in the fall. Our fall season will begin on October 15 with the first of many outstanding speakers. Come and join us.

Whether you are spending the summer in Oro Valley or somewhere further afield, you can expand your family tree and your knowledge by joining a national or regional genealogical society. The National Genealogical Society (NGS) membership includes a six-lesson Family History Skills Course, which covers concepts such as terminology, relationships, the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS), plus more. The New England Historic Genealogical Society offers help with organization, software programs, as well as tips on writing and publishing your family history. If your family has roots in Wisconsin, consider the Wisconsin Historical Society; Coloradoans should check out History Colorado. Virtually every state and/or region of the U.S. has some form of historical or genealogical society, and most offer opportunities to do research remotely. Watch for information about the reopening of the genealogy library and plans for new programs for next fall. Keep in touch through the club website.

Meanwhile, poetry flows on a multiplicity of topics, expressing a wide range of emotions from sweet nostalgia to biting anger and even a touch of comic relief. “Moon Dress” by Deborah Harris is an elegant expression of admiration with a touch of the humble: “I told the moon / she need not dress up for me tonight but she did anyway / her favorite jasmine gown / pearls of stars / a wrap of clouds to catch the wind / her radiance beguiles the way she tilts her head/when she gazes back at me I pretend she glows for me alone / though surely I know better for she has many lovers” Online meetings are running from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. This club is for people who like to cook and socialize over a meal prepared by their fellow club members. Every month brings a new theme and a different group of diners, each of whom prepares a dish for the meal. Last year, our themes varied from ones that implied specific culinary traditions (e.g., Mardi Gras) to some that were wide-open to interpretation by the dining group (e.g., colors). By fall, we expect to be holding our usual kickoff dinner (catered) and fun dinners in members’ homes. In the meantime, take a look at our website for details and photos. New members are always welcome.

Prickly pear cactus fruit begins to turn from tourmaline pink to ripe ruby red in the month of July. The mesquites and acacias droop like weeping willow, because their limbs are weighted down with drying, ripe bean pods. Acorns drop from the Emory oak. The rains are coming and that will be exciting for those of us who are still shut-in. Your board is planning for the coming season with things that will interest you, but right now we are waiting for advice from SCOV on how and when we will reopen. In the meantime, follow the rules and stay healthy. Kiss a flower – it helps.

Havurah Pres. Barbara Hamm 520-989-0062 www.havurahscov.org
Hi, everyone. Havurah continues to send you wishes of good health, both of mind and body. SCOV is slowly and wisely opening up, keeping in mind the welfare of its residents. This month, our Havurah board will be discussing the various ways we can once again hold events for our membership within the parameters of SCOV guidelines. We will take into account our club’s love of friendship (and food) as we explore our options. Please continue to check our website for our club’s latest news and updates. Without a doubt, we all miss seeing each other in a social setting and enjoying the camaraderie that getting together brings to us. Hopefully we will be able to do that once again in the near future.
Republican Club Merritt McGlothlin 520-572-7853 merrittm@nationwide.net Third Tue., 3 PM, Activity Center
The Republican Club is unable to determine if there will be an open meeting that would normally be scheduled on Tuesday, July 21, 3 PM. SCOV is abiding by the guidelines promulgated by the State of Arizona and also locally by Pima County and Oro Valley. If SCOV facilities are open, what will be the requirement for social distancing, outside attendees, etc.? How comfortable would the membership be attending a meeting? If we are unable to hold a meeting in July, we will use other means to forward and process information regarding the upcoming elections. The first scheduled election is the primary election on August 4. That August date is also the election date for the Town of Oro Valley. Please continue to monitor the Tipster, and for even more current information, check the Thursday weekly email, “This Week in SCOV,” for further Republican Club information. The club will also notify all those on the email list. Once we return to holding meetings, everyone is always welcome to attend the third Tuesday of each month.

Dance
Ballroom - SC Starlight Jim Kasierski 520-954-4041 scstarlight.pres2020@gmail.com www.scstarlightdanceclub.wixsite.com/scstarlightdance
SC Starlight provides a fun and social club to practice, learn and enjoy ballroom dancing, whatever your level of ability. While the COVID-19 restrictions have paused weekly Wednesday practices, we have been busy preparing and editing plans to be ready to return to dance when SCOV leaders determine it is prudent for active groups like ours to reopen. Guidelines by CDC, state and local government may require some restrictions or modifications as we restart, but safely returning to dance is the goal. A big thank you to Bill Bable, retiring VP, for his contributions in filling the vacant position earlier this year. As we move through summer, we will be exploring what events and lessons our members would enjoy. Please respond to surveys or reach out to your board with any ideas you have to make your club stronger and even more enjoyable when at last we say, “Let’s Dance!”
Folk Dance Harvey Gardner 520-308-5616 savear@gmail.com Fri., 9:45-11:45 AM, AFC/Studios 1 & 2
Folk dancing is more fun than a treadmill and healthful exercise for balance, muscle, mind and mood. For most dances, we hold hands in a circle to perform non-gymnastic steps to the enchanting music and rhythms of diverse cultures (including our own). Neither prior experience nor a partner is needed. Typical dance sessions consist of 15 folk dances, most with instructions. Folks may always sit out a dance to rest. Drop in to see if this internationally popular dance form is your cup of tea. Also, search FDCSCOV on www.YouTube.com to see us in action online.

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio
As soon as the AFC reopens, Pilates mat classes will resume on Mondays and Thursdays with the same instructors as before. If you haven’t already tried Pilates, summer is a great time to start, as our classes are very small and more personal. First, the stretching exercises are done to warm up and then the Pilates mat routine is performed with modified moves for those with limitations. People ask if the benefits of Pilates, which come from strengthening and stretching exercises, really develop the body’s core (your abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility. The answer is a firm yes. More benefits include improved balance, muscle tone, stamina and a feeling of well-being. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or just stop by and watch. Call Mary with any questions.

Verdins are little birds that reside in SCOV year-round. They like nectar and small insects and often will visit hummingbird feeders. Other than southern Nevada, these desert birds are only found in states along the Mexican Steve Holmes photo border. Look closely and you will see a red patch on its shoulder. The red is more noticeable on the male and its sweet song is easily recognizable. Verdins build surprisingly large nests with openings at the bottom. Want to learn more? We are an activity-oriented group, and all SCOV residents are invited to join us to learn more about the birds in Arizona. We generally list our weekly bird trips, but because of the coronavirus, all official birding trips have been canceled until the fall. The planning meeting listed above will probably take place over the Internet. If you have any questions about our club or about birds in general, feel free to contact Peggy (above).

Pickleball Pres. L. Come out and enjoy the clean air early mornings or evenings under the lights. The grief group plans to start again on Tuesday, August 4. We will be practicing social distancing, as our room is quite large, and also, to keep safe, masks will be mandatory. We will continue to focus on loss in a safe, loving and caring environment. Due to the COVID-19, many of us may be experiencing a new kind of loss in addition to losses from things before COVID. There may be loss of friends or family, grief from loneliness due to sheltering at home, and other grief issues associated with the pandemic. None of these things should be taken lightly. The grief journey can take time, but is vital to healing, and by sharing with others, the burden is lightened. Because of many uncertainties, please call ahead a few days before first meeting.

With businesses reducing their hours or ceasing operations altogether, it’s safe to say many are feeling the effects of COVID-19. Youth On Their Own (YOTO) students are no exception. In addition to the challenges they faced with school closures, YOTO kids found themselves out of work and in need of additional economic support. Addressing these needs, Youth On Their Own established the YOTO COVID Emergency Fund providing urgent financial and basic needs assistance to YOTO youth. Despite what is going on around us, YOTO’s goal remains the same: to ensure youth experiencing homelessness have the resources they need to stay in school and graduate.
