Their Words Not Mine by Chris Ludwig Given the events of the past five months, I am at a loss for what to say that hasn’t already been said. So, here are a few quotes from challenging times in our nation’s history for us all to ponder and reflect upon. “We must all hang together, or most assuredly, we will all hang separately.” Benjamin Franklin made this statement at the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Benjamin Franklin also said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” “These are the times that try men’s souls; the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.” –Thomas Paine, author of inspiring pamphlets during the American Revolution. Each of the historic quotes above comes from a period of great national and personal challenge. Many of us vividly remember times when the world changed: December 7, 1941, September 11, 2001, and now January 20, 2020 (first COVID-19 diagnosis in the United States). As the world changes again, and we really have no idea where it is going, let us not forget those things that really matter: family, friends, nation. Each of us needs to consider how we can make things better.
Hats Off to Leaders Don’t we live in challenging times? In addition to a global pandemic, we have severe wildfires and civil unrest. In our lifetimes, we’ve seen severe wildfires and civil unrest before. Authorities have developed plans for dealing with both. The global pandemic, however, is something new, and while some plans may have been drawn up to deal with an epidemic, I haven’t heard of anyone unveiling a plan to handle a crisis of this magnitude. We’ve all watched as the governor has issued several executive orders. Others, too, have shared what they believe are the best guidelines. Some of those orders and guidelines have changed as more information is received. We understand that officials are trying to do the best they can. Here at SCOV, we, too, are doing the best we can. The Board is inundated with emails and questions as am I. I hear from those of you who support the slow reopening of facilities and keeping the restrictions for face masks, groups of less than 10 and social distancing. I also hear from those who are opposed to all of these things. It appears that an expert can be found to support whatever position you like. As we move forward, I know the Board and I will continue to do all we can to make good sound decisions and to balance the wants of the residents to the best of our ability while keeping the COVID-19 liability to a minimum. The Board has sought direction from our legal counsel as well as our insurance agent to keep the Association within the safe harbor the law affords. Whether you lead the community as a Board member, club president, a committee chair or other leadership roles, my hat is off to all of you, my friends, who have the intestinal fortitude to lead in these times of vast challenges. I applaud you (leader or not) who turn these challenges into opportunities, you who take your wisdom and knowledge to give hope to those you lead. Thanks to you who in the darkest storm find that elusive beam of light and help others. You are my HEROES!!!

L
ike you, I find myself straining at the leash and otherwise anticipating the return of Ray Jerkins and Lonnie Davis as instructors of our SCOV physical conditioning training sessions. Ray leads highly personalized classes where you and Ray set the days and times for a routine of lifting weights and workouts on the treadmills, bikes and other machines. It is amazing how quickly those machines help you stretch and limber up your whole body. And the weights are highly recommended to maintain bone den- Ray Jerkins demonstrates use of TRX machine sity in our mature bodies. Ray isn’t training while the AFC is closed, but you’ll be able to sign up with him when it reopens and indoor classes resume. In addition to personalized training, Ray leads a Parkinson’s Exercise Class twice a week. The class had been suspended during the coronavirus closure, but resumes this month. See Workshops & Classes on page 10 for class information. It won’t be long before Lonnie’s Sweat and Stretch classes resume at 7:30 AM on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. You will, of course, be advised of the necessary COVID-19 precautions to take. We are all learning more about the COVID-19 virus each day, and most importantly, we should know how to avoid getPre-closure, a Sweat and Stretch class enjoyed a workout ting it. We know what a horrible disease it is. Treat the threat as the most serious danger to your health. We know you have missed your workouts at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. Remember to take it easy when you

first get back, even though you have been working out on your own, and follow all precautions furnished to you at each class. We are all looking forward to seeing everyone back in their classes. And remember–wash your hands frequently with soap and water, keep a social distance of at least six feet from other people, wear a mask when you are out of your home and avoid large crowds of people. Ray Jerkins starts with a nice calming “Hello,” but before long you find yourself in the middle of a pretty good workout. Don’t think too much about it, don’t stop, just enjoy it. Just smile, because he did it again. He delivered another good workout, and it’s for sure not a drag. Ray’s classes are designed to fulfill your needs. And those needs are determined in a meeting with just you and Ray. He periodically reviews what you have set up for yourself and counsels you on the direction you are going and if it is really for you. You get to make the call. If the bass is booming to a good rock beat and the room is filled with the sounds of workout music, it sounds like you are at the Sweat and Stretch class. Lonnie Davis starts every program with music he selects, custom arranged on cassettes. The super loud music makes it so easy to pump those legs, swing those arms and lose yourself in the moment. The sweat starts to pour... Lonnie will find a way for you to use body parts you have forgotten Aqua Zumba class follows Lonnie Davis’ enthusiastic direction about. The AFC pool is very big and to be heard in every corner out there takes a lot of help. Lonnie uses a sound system that reaches every corner of the pool and more. Water Aerobics and Aqua Zumba classes have resumed with a limitation on the number of attendees and a requirement to register in advance. Finally, Lonnie’s chair aerobics class will also be coming back soon. Haven’t tried it yet? Go ahead and try it...you may find it is just right for you. Ray and Lonnie will bring us back into top form!

In light of the recent Bighorn fire and the 911 system going down in mid-June, you should be aware of a service provided by the Town of Oro Valley. It’s called CodeRED. I’ve borrowed, with permission, the recent article in the town’s newsletter that explains the system and how to sign up for it. CodeRED is a free emergency notification service provided to all residents within Oro Valley that will notify you of emergency information through phone calls, text messages, emails and social media. The system will be used to keep you informed of local events that may immediately impact your safety. As a local resident, you are encouraged to take action and register your cell phone for this service and verify your home location during the enrollment process, so you will receive notifications that directly impact your home or business. To learn more or register, visit the Town’s web page www.orovalleyaz.gov and type Code RED in the search bar. Select the Register for CodeRED page for complete details and step-by-step instructions.

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Adjusting to New Normal July brought a few changes to our lifestyle. The new Republic trash service is one. The Veteran’s Club Fourth of July parade was a huge success. We were happy to open the AFC pool. Both pools being opened brought relief for some. Thank you to the many who called and emailed me to state they felt safe in the way both pools were opened to our residents. Facility hours have been adjusted to allow approved clubs to start to meet if they were approved by the General Manager. It was surprising the number of clubs who have delayed starting up again due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in Arizona. Trying to determine what the new normal will be in all of our everyday lives in SCOV and everywhere will be interesting. Stay safe.

Community Services - Katy Mosier kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Preparation for Selling Your Home SCOV homes are selling on a regular basis even though the housing inventory is lower than normal. This is a reminder that as you prep your house for listing, one of the steps includes contacting Karen Loffredo at kloffredo@suncityorovalley.com to make arrangements for an HOA Listing Inspection. She will contact an Architectural Compliance Team (ACT) member to arrange a review of the exterior condition of your home. If an owner is not living in the home, the listing Realtor often makes these arrangements and then follows up with the owner to address any deficiencies. If there are areas that violate the governing documents, you as seller will have the option of correcting them before an offer is accepted. Until an offer is accepted by an owner and an escrow is set up by the title company, you may request a re-inspection by ACT. Once the offer goes to the title company, there are no re-inspections until 30 days after the home has closed. If a seller decides not to correct any deficiencies, the buyer will inherit them at closing and will be responsible to have them corrected within 30 days after closing, at which time the ACT will re-inspect the property. If a home sells before a Listing Inspection can be arranged, an Escrow Inspection will be ordered by the title company.

The Library is open with reduced hours (Monday-Friday, 9-11 AM and 1-3 PM) and a modified curbside pickup service. Safety routines include taking temperatures of the staff, twice-a-day sanitizing of surfaces, 72-hour quarantining of returned items, and of course, masking and hand-sanitizing by all who enter. These routines have resulted in confidence among the patrons who have visited the Library. Come by and browse our selection of new books, audiobooks, movies,

magazines and puzzles to curl up with inside on the hot days coming our way this month. If you would like to keep your distance, place items on hold from home, and after receiving notification they are ready, drive up and park outside the Library. Call our number 520-917-8064 from the comfort of your air-conditioned car, and we’ll bring your items out. Curbside service is provided daily, Monday-Friday during the hours that we are open. We have kept up with new accessions, even while closed, adding 162 new items to our catalog between the beginning of June and July 7. Find your new favorite book or movie at the Library. Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Signs Your Shoes Are Dead Most people wait till their shoes look bad before replacing them. By that time, they have been toast for many months. These signs of long-dead shoes should prompt you to replace them immediately: 1) The sole tread pattern is worn down. Many shoes now are purposefully made so a different color shows through when the sole is worn to alert you to this. 2) The heel is worn down more on one side than the other, sometimes to the point that the shoe is leaning to one side. 3) There are wrinkles on the side or bottom of the sole from breakdown of the support and cushioning. The uppers are broken down around the ankle. Dangers of dead shoes and what’s wrong with wearing wearing them: They are dead because they no longer provide good support and cushioning. Lack of cushioning and support can lead to shin splints, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, Iliotibial band syndrome and stress fractures. Shoe wear patterns: Where and how you wear down the soles and heels of your shoes can tell a shoe fit expert what kind of shoes you should buy. Bring your old shoes with you when you buy new shoes. They can be indicators that you overpronate, have a neutral gait or supinate. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Once we reopen, orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. The AFC pool has been completely refinished. The work included removal of all the plaster on the walls and floor of the pool and repair of all cracks. The entire pool was replastered and new tile was installed throughout. New lane guides (lines) were purchased and installed. The pool looks great. Regarding the lane guides: It is requested that when moving from one lane to another, do not go over the lane guide, but go under. There is enough slack in the line to easily lift them up and go under. The guides are not designed to support a person’s body weight. If numerous individuals travel over, it causes stress on the line which can lead to a break. This causes an inconvenience for others as well as an additional repair cost to the Association. As always, we value your input. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for October.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is now expanding its review of submittals with required Oro Valley permits to include: window and door replacements, rolling shade screens, rolling window screens, rolling shutters and retractable awnings. The ARC will continue reviewing all other submittals except for the following: room additions which change the footprint of the house, patio covers as defined in the Development Standards Section 2.12 and requested variances to

the SCOV Governing Documents. Residents will be notified when such submittals are again accepted. The ARC, under COVID-19 conditions, will meet with the homeowner(s) only if they wear a mask and maintain social distancing.

What’s so great about the online directory? The paper phone book is updated just once a year, but the online directory is updated monthly. Email addresses are included online only, not in the book. You can even access the directory on your smart phone, which means you have a community directory in your pocket. The directory is located in the nonpublic area of our website, so you need to log in to access it. Scroll down to the actual listings. There you will find the directory’s incremental search box, which will display results as you type. The Loan Room reopened in July and will continue to be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM, as long as we can meet your needs within state and SCOV protocols. Currently, that means that no more than two residents can be in the Loan Room at one time with others waiting safely outside for their turn. All residents must wear masks, bring someone to help with loading and unloading, and sanitize all equipment before returning it to the Loan Room. You may make reservations on the website or at the Loan Room up to two months in advance of your needs, but walk-in loans are also welcome. We will continue to respond to actual medical emergencies outside of open hours, but expect that most requests can be met on our open Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will be glad to see you again and meet your short-term loan needs.

Rain and wind were and are still here, while some of our residents didn’t leave for cooler climes. We also have some new folks who have never been here during our hot summer months. Keep a watchful eye, and report any storm damage to Administration, so homeowners may be notified. With our monsoon season, pesky weeds seem to appear overnight. Remove them as soon as possible, and try to make every effort to stay ahead of the weeds in your yard in the next few weeks. Has wind from the storms caused excessive tree debris in your yard? Keep your driveway and the sidewalk swept so that your home doesn’t appear vacant. Is there standing water in your yard? It’s important to drain ponds and/or fountains in yards to eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Other items such as buckets, empty flowerpots and other containers can also collect rain, so be sure they are not holding standing water. Yes, some things are different; but then, some are not.

As I write this article, Arizona is seeing a rise in COVID-19 cases. This is a concern for all of us. While we all are eager to return to normal, we must face the reality and learn to continue taking extra precautions. Posse members are also eager to resume patrols, but it’s not possible at this time, especially with social distancing. Currently, it looks like September might be the first opportunity for us to resume; however, we’re not even sure that will happen. I’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, please continue to look out for your neighbors. It’s so important that we all take care of each other. I understand the Dark House program through the Oro Valley Police Department is also not in service at this time. If you live next to a winter visitor and you see an issue with their property, be sure to give them a call. (You can find their phone number on the SCOV website.) Be safe, stay healthy, and if you see a member of the Oro Valley Police Department, thank them for their service and handling extra patrols in our area.

Summer is here and residents find it advantageous to park in the shade provided by the solar panels in the parking lots at the Mountain Vista complex. When parking under the panels, you might notice the electrical boxes on some of the vertical poles that support the panels. Those boxes contain the inverters that convert the DC power generated by the solar

panels into AC power that is used in Association buildings thereby saving the HOA money and reducing the community’s carbon footprint. The humming noise at the boxes indicates the equipment is operating normally. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. We have not been meeting recently, but will resume our monthly meetings when it is appropriate.

Hydration is extremely important during the summer heat. Be sure to drink plenty of water prior to and while you are out on the course. Let’s be prepared for thunderstorms, possible flash floods and lightning. It’s official monsoon season in Southern Arizona, which means we need to be careful. Be sure to observe the following suggestions to keep yourself safe while heading out on the course during the monsoon season: Check the forecast and check it often. Download a reliable radar app, seek shelter immediately if you’re not able to get off the golf course in time. Don’t worry if you can’t finish your round; we are happy to give you a rain check credit to complete your round another time. The important thing is to be safe and use your best judgment when the weather is questionable. With the greens reconstruction project complete, the plan is to open play on the new greens for a couple of weeks before we close for overseeding. Overseeding is right around the corner, with the golf course scheduled to close September 21-October 11. It will be cart path only for a couple of weeks after opening. The Pro Shop will be open with limited hours during overseeding, and the driving range will be open.

This August will be very different from any other year. We will be growing in the brandnew greens, surrounds, and driving range tee following the completion of the greens renovation and driving range tee renovation

projects. The surrounds and tee were sodded, so they establish quickly. The greens are sprigged, which takes time to establish. The new green sprigs will be about two weeks old on August 1. At this point, the growing in begins with rolling the sprigs several times to help smooth the surface. When the greens are sprigged, the surface is very clumpy with the hydro sprig material, so the rolling helps to initially smooth out the green. After rolling, the greens will then begin to be mowed at .200 of an inch. The initial mowing is on top of a very thin grass canopy. The goal is to not allow much vertical growth but encourage lateral growth to help fill in the thin areas. After mowing a few times and lowering the mowing height, the greens will be lightly topdressed with the same sand that was used to construct the greens. This topdressing will also help smooth the surface and encourage more lateral growth. When the canopy starts to fill in, then the process of lightly verticutting begins. Verticutting will help prevent grain and keep the greens from getting puffy or thick. Throughout the process, weekly applications of fertilizer, soil amendments and flushing of salts will occur. These additions will help get the greens established quicker and provide a healthy stand of grass.

As we approach the middle of summer, the club is at a standstill due to COVID-19. All activities are still on hold. The golf course renovation is progressing, and the greens are beginning to take shape. The disturbed areas are being sodded, and the greens are being sprigged. The changes are minor in some areas and major in others. It is going to be nice when it’s all done. Thanks to all involved for making this happen. During a surprise inspection from the health department, we scored in the top 10 percent of the Pima County restaurants, qualifying us for the Pima County Best Practices Award. We are very proud to be awarded such an honor; however, we did not do it for the award, we did it for you. We want you to feel comfortable in your own restaurant. In addition to following all the CDC, state and county guidelines, we have created a residents-only area, so those who are uncomfortable sitting amongst the public would still have a place to dine in the restaurant. Your safety is our number one concern. We have been getting a lot of questions about when we will start entertainment or karaoke again. We wish we knew. Our members were invited to share where they are and what they’ve been working on this summer. Ann Gethen responded that she had a show of her work in La Veta, CO at the Spanish Peaks Arts Council Gallery and sold several pieces. Charlotte Landis is spending the summer in Acadia, Maine and is watching demos to try some new approaches when she returns. Judy Bjorling reports that since she has gone into quarantine, 110 days ago, she has made a painting every day. Her work can be viewed on Instagram at jcbjorling. She’s posting at #covidart. April Hoffman enjoys her garden every day. She’s presently harvesting seeds from her native perennial garden collection to plant next year and to share. Jane Leonard is painting sunset and shoreline images, hoping she makes one suitable to send to her niece who just bought a new home on Lake Michigan. We have heard that Dave Dame has a new puppy. One project that members are doing is crocheting sleeping mats for Tucson people experiencing homelessness. If you are interested in participating, you can 1) donate plastic grocery bags, 2) cut the donated bags Sleeping mats into strips, 3) string the strips into plastic yarn (plarn), and/or 4) crochet the plarn into sleeping mats. Many do this at home, dropping in at meetings to pick up supplies. This project and other knitting and crocheting activities are what we do at our meetings, socializing at the same time. To donate bags: Drop clean and flattened plastic grocery bags on the porch anytime at Jane Fairchild’s home at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. Please keep in mind that we cannot use newspaper bags or thin plastic produce bags for this project.

In 1980, the first single-head computerized embroidery machine was introduced to the home market. Back then, there was one kind of stabilizer, only a 4x4 hoop size, and the machine needed a diskette in order to run. We thought that machine was the cat’s meow. Sulky Thread wasn’t a company until 1985. Now, 40 short years later, we have home machines with multiple needles, mega hoops, cameras and WiFi. Threads come in unlimited colors, in rayon, polyester and metallic. We have so many types of stabilizers, we need a chart to know what to use. We can now embroider not only on fabric, but also on cork, vinyl, burlap, Mylar, netting, paper and more. What changes we’ve seen. That’s why we like the Machine Embroidery Club. We had a safe and slow opening. We were thrilled to be one of the first Artisan Center clubs to open. We had 38 of our artistic members enjoy time working on projects. This included 13 members that completed Lenora Brown won first place in the 2020 Stained Glass their safety Contest. training on our first day, June 15. On Tuesday, June 16, the studio was open to all members who had signed up using SignupGenius. Members observed all safety guidelines. Under the guidelines that we established, six is the maximum number allowed in the studio at any one time slot. The average was two or three people at any one time. Some members are working at home for now and bringing their glass in to be fired. Members of the kiln team have been firing every evening. We sent a survey to members who worked in the studio in the first week. They all felt perfectly safe in the studio. Physical distancing was not a problem as workspaces were clearly marked. Everyone washes their hands after signing in and disinfects everything they touch. Signing up for studio time was easy with SignupGenius.

The club board is considering what would be possible, and we have a number of ideas. August is a month of spectacular weather. Fast moving and sometimes violent thunderstorms can drop large amounts of rain, strong winds, lightening and thunder. Soil is saturated and creeks are running. There is an explosion of flowers: bright yellows, golds, oranges and reds, creamy whites and pink. Late summer is also vine time: yellow trumpet, morning glories and red creeper. Of course, this color brings butterflies. Hopefully, you have special plants in your garden for them. Do not prune fruit trees this month. A good way to remember to fertilize fruit trees is Valentine’s, Memorial and Labor Days. Maintain regular monthly watering for large cacti, desert spoon, ocotillos and yuccas during this month. In the hottest parts of the region, this is not a good month to plant roses. If you do plant this month, keep the plants well-watered and protected from harsh winds and afternoon sun.

Your board has submitted to SCOV a proposal for reopening our dance practice sessions with two alternatives to allow returning to dance when it is safer to do so. Dance club plans will be reviewed either this month or in September. We wish to thank the SCOV Board and Mark Wade for continually monitoring the COVID-19 situation and guidelines to help maintain a safe and active community. We are pleased to welcome Leo Belardinelli to our board as the new VP. He is joining the re-elected Member at Large, Helen Smith and Sec., Nancy Trumble along with the continuing Pres., Jim Kasierski and Treas., Babs Kasierski. Folk dancing is more fun than a treadmill and healthful exercise for balance, muscle, mind and mood. For most dances, we hold hands in a circle to perform non-gymnastic steps to the enchanting music and rhythms of diverse cultures (including our own). We’re temporarily on hiatus, but hopefully, back in the swing of things by September. How I miss dancin’ with y’all. Hope you’re someplace cool and pleasant, keeping fit. I’ve found some really good dance workout YouTube sites to share with you. Let me know if you have some too. My fave: Island Girl Hula workouts (There are several targeted choices). Also, try the sites featuring Merengue, Salsa, Zumba and standing or sitting Pilates. They all offer different levels, and I always feel better working out with them for just 20-30 minutes, twice a day. “Blue Hawaii” is also on YouTube to bring back the hula vibe (the women dressed in blue version). Check them out, stay fit and well, because I know we’ll be dancing together again soon. Now that we’re a variety show-style performing group, along with hula, there’ll be a lot of “Ain’t We Got Fun” happening. I would love to hear from you: email, text or phone, you know I’m home.

Although Sunliners members have not been able to dance together since March, our officers have still been having regular board meetings and conducting business for the club. We had Zoom meetings and live meetings on the Kiva Patio outside the Activity Center, not a bad spot early in the morning. The board has been adapting to changing circumstances, and also moving forward with plans that will be in place when our club members can meet and dance together again. Some things that became necessary during the quarantine can also serve us well in the future. One of those things is electronic voting. With this in place, all our members can vote on officers and club business, no matter where they happen to be when the vote takes place. This will be especially valuable to seasonal residents. If you are a Sunliners member who cannot vote electronically, please contact one of the officers shown above to learn about alternate voting methods. Okay, members, here’s a test for you. Which one of our favorite dances has this phrase? “There’s a dance floor up in my living room.” It’s true for many of us now.

Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer, at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band–you’ll need to bring your own. A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

Weekly, a mountain bike option takes a few of us to the Tortolita rangelands, containing some of the highest rated single track bike trails in the nation. Our group ride options are from 25 to 50+ miles. We always take time for coffee and conversation somewhere on these rides. Our Women on Wheels (WOW) group have their own agenda providing routes of 12 to 30+ miles. Our club sponsors social events, participates in Wheels for Kids and are involved with the Interfaith Community Food Bank. Curve-billed thrashers are very common in SCOV and can be found thrashing on the ground in your yard for insects, whistling its familiar whip-whip call like someone hailing a taxi. One of six species of thrashSteve Holmes photo ers in Arizona, this is the one most likely seen in SCOV. The more secretive crissal thrasher resides in Catalina State Park. Mainly a desert bird, our featured thrasher is only common in southern Arizona, New Mexico, western Texas and southeast Colorado. Want to learn more? We are an activity-oriented group, and all SCOV residents are invited to join us to learn more about the birds in Arizona. We generally list our weekly bird trips in the Tipster, but unfortunately, because of the coronavirus, all official birding trips have been canceled until the fall. Keith, the son of two of our club members, is a firefighter at the Tucson Fire Station 8 on West King Road. Keith learned to play last year and wanted to introduce pickleball to his buddies at the station. They lined off a court on the pad at the back of their station and needed a net. Keith’s mom asked if we had any used equipment to sell to them. Long story short, our club donated a portable net, some paddles and balls to get them going. Now Station 8 will be able to enjoy pickleball and compete with other Tucson stations that have begun playing our great game.

Table Tennis is back with revised hours (posted below). All players will need to follow these safety measures set by management: • Play singles only–no doubles. • Use sanitizing solution provided at entryway upon entering and leaving building. • Maintain at least 6 ft. distance from other players. • Wear masks while in the building, including during play time. • Play is limited to club members and residents at this time. • Four people to a room at any given time. Players need to contact a partner and make reservations by emailing Peggy Smith, peggy@buteos.net, at least 24 hours prior to play, but no more than seven days in advance. Our club promotes exercise, friendly competition and fellowship for SCOV residents through the sport of tennis. In addition, we have a long tradition of providing financial support for SCOV organizations and others in the Oro Valley area that serve Shoes donated to Foundation Clothing Bank youth and families. In for Amphi School District 2020, our club and individual members have made the following contributions: • 110 pairs of new shoes and 99 pairs of socks for the Foundation Clothing Bank for the Amphi School District • $1,188 for Casa Amigas • $1,045 for Seniors for Kids • $900 for Cheer Bears We are grateful for these ongoing opportunities to support our community. Tennis play continues per the days and hours mentioned above, with a particular focus on early hours to beat the heat. Do you remember your first bike? Wheels for Kids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing rehabbed bicycles to children and families in need in the Tucson area. To date we have donated 3,000 bikes to local nonprofits who distribute the bikes to their clients. Some of our partner organizations include Refugee Focus, Boys and Girls Club of Tucson, Children’s Advocacy Center, Casa de los Niños, Ronald McDonald House and Youth On Their Own.
