Grabbing the Bull–Perspective is Everything by Jim Mitchell I can’t remember who advised me or when I first heard that sometimes you have to take the bull by the tail and face the situation, but it’s come to my mind many times over the years in difficult situations. The past few months, it has popped up more frequently than I’d like. As difficult and ugly as the COVID-19 pandemic has been, your Board and staff have tried to be realistic in facing the ever-changing situation. The one constant has been following guidelines from the CDC, state, county and town. It may not have seemed like a constant because the guidelines change as more data and research becomes available. But that’s the way science works. (As opposed to social media where one can find an “expert” to support about any belief that fits one’s viewpoint.) A metaphor normally used to build confidence in leaders doesn’t even apply today. You know the saying, “This isn’t her/his first rodeo.” But the fact of the matter is, this is our first rodeo, for all of us, our first encounter with a fast-spreading virus no one has ever seen. So can we at least agree that, until we have an effective vaccine, we need to take individual responsibility for the good of all of us by wearing masks, social distancing, washing hands frequently and following the science as we learn more about how to stop the spread? In the meantime, I’m reminded of lyrics from a Van Morrison song: “You’d find something every day to take your breath away. The world is filled with wonder, no matter what they say. Wonders all around us. And life is all we’ve got. If you wait for mountains, then you’re gonna miss a lot.” We in SCOV have a lot to look forward to, not just the ongoing reopening of pre-pandemic facilities, amenities, clubs and events, but also implementation of the long-range plan for new and updated facilities, amenities, clubs and events. Improved Activity Center, Artisan Center, exercise pool, Welcome Center, dog park and golf course anyone? Those are exciting possibilities in our future once we can grab the bull by a more manageable end.

Let’s talk PPP PPP (Payroll Protection Program). What is it? When did we apply for it? Did we get it? How much did we get? Can it be forgiven? What is required for forgiveness? I’ve heard these questions and more regarding the PPP loan. There is so much confusion about the PPP. Some of the answers I’ve heard add to the confusion. I thought it would be well if we take time and try to clear the air with some facts as they relate to the PPP loan. What is it? The PPP is the primary stimulus of the CARES Act for small business. These funds are administered through the Small Business Administration (SBA) and are intended to guarantee eight weeks of payroll as well as some other costs to help small businesses stay in business. Did the Board approve making an application, and when did the Association apply for the PPP loan? The Board was informed that staff were looking into the PPP on March 31 and was kept up to date as we moved through the process. When did we apply for it? Randy Trenary (Controller) first dropped off the application with all supporting documentation on April 1, 2020, to our local bank branch. On April 2, the application was changed by the SBA, so Randy submitted the new application. The SBA then created a website for online submissions which Randy completed on April 5. On April 16, we were told that we were not approved. April 20, we were told by the bank we were in the queue if a second round of funding became available. Did we get it? We were notified more funds were available on April 27; then on April 30 we received approval notification. That same day, Joy Huxtable (Board President) emailed the Board of Directors seeking authorization to accept the loan and allowing me to sign for it. This action was ratified in the May 21 Board meeting. The loan documents were signed on May 5, 2020. How much did we get? We received $615,955 on May 6. Can the loan be forgiven? Yes. What is required for forgiveness? Funds must be used for payroll and benefits (employer portion of medical insurances and 401K), state employment taxes, and utilities. Initially, 75% of the funds needed to go to payroll-related expenses and 25% to nonpayroll expenses we disbursed by June 30. That was changed to 60% / 40% when they extended the disbursement deadline to December 31, 2020. All our funds were disbursed by June 26 at a 77% / 23% ratio. We must also get back to similar staffing level pre-COVID-19. Certain Safe Harbors were created in this regard if returning to staffing levels was not possible. Some of these Safe Harbors will apply to us for restaurant, activities and Pro Shop staff. Continued on page 5

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! Life-Long Learning at SCOV

by Lei Lane Bammel
hat do you get when a great idea is put in a receptive environment and then is nurtured by skillful, caring and thoughtful people? For Sun City Oro Valley, the 2003 idea of Gene Bammel blossomed into an extremely successful and popular club, the Institute of Learning in Retirement (a Life-Long Learning Program), better known as the ILR. At the beginning, the first session in the fall of 2003, four courses were offered, and six new ones followed in the winter of 2004. In 2015, the club added a summer Jim Williams using Zoom to conduct a summer session class on Famous Arizonans. John O’Hagan photo session to the fall and winter ones, and, recently the annual number of courses has expanded from six to around 30. A member once commented, “I can say, unequivocally, that since taking ILR classes the past several years, my mind has been stretched, never to return to its original shape.” Another has offered, “The ILR is one of the very best things living in SCOV offers to all of us on a reliable and continuing basis...keeps us young and involved in life.” and “We have a real gem available to us. How fortunate we are!” Classes typically meet once a week for a maximum of two hours, and they range in duration from 2 to 10 weeks. Class size has been limited by the fire marshall’s occupancy limit for the rooms. Most courses have a limit of 60, but a few have used two rooms to increase the number to 120. There is a one-time membership initiation fee of $25. After that, each course costs only $10, except for the summer courses which have been free. In addition, when in session (8 weeks in the fall and 10 in the winter), there have been free weekly Samplers. These presentations have a different topic and presenter each week, and no advance registration is required. Until now, Samplers have been open to any resident. Going forward, they, like courses, will only be available to ILR members. ILR’s mission is to provide a broad range of educational opportunities for its members and the residents of SCOV, primarily through offering courses and presentations. It has grown from about 100 to around 800 members. There has been an amazing variety of course topics and presentation methods. Some have even had field trips of various kinds (geological, historical and even cuisine/restaurant-based). Subject matter has covered the gamut of art, health, histo-

ry, dance, finance, literature, math, music, religion, science, technology and philosophy. All of the course instructors, called moderators, are volunteers, some of whom have lived outside of SCOV. Like everything else in this new COVID-19 era, the ILR has had to make dramatic changes in order to continue its mission. For now, and until there is a viable vaccine that is available and taken by our members, there will be no in-person classes or Samplers. With that decision made, alternatives were considered. Our Curriculum Chair, Randy Myerson, has investigated various possibilities as have several of our moderators. Randy, impressively, has been developing the knowledge and skills necessary for being a Zoom (a popular video teleconferencing app) host and understanding the nuances of how the application can be used by potential moderators. Three free courses were offered this summer, each with a different approach. Jim Williams used Zoom, Jack Peradotto selected a self-paced PowerPoint approach and Garry Buck is doing a multiple week, computerbased approach with class discussion facilitated by emails. For some members, working with these methods and techniques is going to be educational and mind expanding. But the possibilities are very exciting and no doubt offer another approach that can be continued as an additional option once things return to something like the previous normal. The Randy Myerson is the Zoom host for the summer session class. advantages, Jane Myerson photo beside zero exposure, include being able to take a class anywhere there is an Internet connection, having a comfortable chair, not having to get dressed to go out, being able to have a beverage of choice and not having to drive and park and walk to a room, etc. The important thing is that enriching, brain-expanding, educational and fun opportunities continue to be available in a safe environment. While reduced in the number of offerings, the club is planning on having fall 2020 and winter 202l courses and Samplers for its members. See article on page 16 and the club website www.suncityilr.com for more information.

General Manager, continued from page 3 Our best opportunity for full forgiveness of the loan will be to wait until we are at pre-COVID19 staffing levels. Depending on how this virus plays out, it is likely this won’t happen before the end of the year. We anticipate submitting for forgiveness sometime in December. I want to express my appreciation to our Board of Directors who have taken every opportunity to take advantage of this program which will lessen the financial impact of COVID-19 virus on employees and the Association.

Hot Topics Have you seen the Hot Topics button on the website? It’s the go-to place for the current hot topics in SCOV. Right now, there’s information there about COVID-19, trash, Comcast and Zoom. These are the things the community is asking and talking about, and you now have a quick link to those topics. The topics will change as the current news in the community changes. There’s also an FAQ page as well as a place to ask a question. Communication is one of the most important elements of SCOV, and this is another way information is provided to you.
Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 When, Where, How and Why? These are questions I am asked daily. Every day brings new challenges not only for the managers but for residents. I know many of you are frustrated that I can’t give you an answer to all of your questions. All of our personal lives have changed like we never thought possible. As we open things slowly, I am working to find more social ways to gather safely under rules set by the Governor, county and our Board. As of this writing, SCOV has been lucky that our friends and neighbors seem to be healthy through all of this. Let’s all hang in there together. We are lucky to be able to get out, attend some clubs and dine at our restaurant.
Community Services - Katy Mosier kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Town of Oro Valley Building Permits When you are preparing the forms for an ARC or In-House submittal, please remember that it is possible your project will need an issued Town of Oro Valley permit(s) as part of the project. Not every project will require a permit, but there are several that do require them. If there is any question about permits, please contact the Town of Oro Valley 520-229-4800 and ask for Philip O’Conner. He will be able to direct you. If you do not need a permit for a project, please document your conversation with the date, time and town contact within the body of your submittal. If you do need a permit(s), it is imperative that you email a copy of the permit to kmosier@suncityorovalley.com prior to any construction. Some projects that may need permits are the following: installation of more than two windows, installation of a flagpole anywhere on your property, temporary storage of items such as pavers or roof tiles in the right-of-way, etc.

Hats off to our SCOV volunteer librarians for their service during this extraordinary time. While not all our volunteers have been able to come back yet, those who have, have improved the quality of life for our community. Our Library provides a place to go for residents experiencing loneliness and boredom during the extended lockdown. It has not been easy; volunteers who stepped up to the plate had to learn new procedures. Each shift begins with taking temperatures and sanitizing surfaces. Once or twice a day dozens of items, often over one hundred, are unloaded from the book drop onto a cart and marked for a 72-hour quarantine. Carts that have completed the 72 hours are unloaded onto another cart and wheeled out to the circulation desk to be checked in and shelved. Once a week a volunteer with loads of patience runs the overdue report, generally about six pages long, and searches for every single item not only on our shelves, but on each of the six or so active quarantine carts before calling patrons. One volunteer works the circulation desk, handling all checkouts, check ins, phone calls, questions and much more. Another volunteer stationed in the Library lobby limits the number of patrons who can enter and ensures everyone wears a mask and uses hand sanitizer, so they can safely browse our collections at a safe social distance. The joy on the faces of those going home with new books, movies, magazines and puzzles is a testament to all the volunteers’ hard work. Please remember that curbside pickup is still available. Call 520-917-8064 for details.
Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Mask Tips When wearing your face covering or mask, be sure that it covers both your mouth and nose and fits snugly. So, if wearing a mask or face covering has benefits that outweigh any potential or even imagined downside, are there ways to make extended use easier? Turns out there are some simple tips that can make prolonged mask use more bearable. Steps to help with prolonged mask use that experts recommend often include: Take Five Breaths: By taking five breaths before putting

Money MATTERS
Due to the timing of our annual audit, the financial statement for July is not included in the September Tipster. Financial statements can be found on our website www.scovaz.com and in our SCOV Library. The complete audited financials will be available on the website and in the SCOV Library before October 31 as mandated by the Bylaws. A copy will also be available in the Administration offices. on your mask, right after you put your mask on, and after removal of your mask can stop your nervous system from developing an incorrect breathing pattern. This entails inhaling through your nose for four seconds and exhaling through your mouth for six seconds. Take a two-second break and repeat five times. Breathe Deep: As some people wear their masks, they actually change the way they breathe. In order to avoid this, make a concerted effort to breathe slower and longer when wearing your face covering. Take a Break: When possible, try to take a break from wearing your mask or face covering. It is these little respites that can make prolonged mask use bearable. Again, take five deep breaths during these breaks and be sure that during a break you are mindful of social distancing. Unfortunately, mask or face covering use is the new normal (at least in the short term). Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Once we reopen, orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, September 8, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment. It will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, September 9, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Is your hangout gone? Do you miss The Views Restaurant atmosphere with its great food, entertainment, wine nights, karaoke or beers after golf? I bet we all do. So, here we are, faced with a hopefully temporary new normal which most of us feel we can’t do anything about. That’s one way of looking at it. The other way would be to think of it as a new start with new rules, but with the same goal of making The Views Restaurant one of the best venues in SCOV and Oro Valley. So, that leads to my introduction. My name is Leo Belardinelli, and I have agreed to try to fill the shoes of Barb McNeill, who has been the chairperson of the Food and Beverage Committee for the last three years. It was Barb and her committee who helped our Food and Beverage Director, Aalt Bouwer, and his staff forge a new restaurant and create a major revenue producing venue in SCOV. You can help also. If you have an idea to throw in the hat, or you would like to be on the committee, email me. You could be the bearer of the next great idea.

The Loan Room is open and will continue to be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM, as long as we can meet your needs within state and SCOV protocols. Currently, that means that no more than two residents can be in the Loan Room at one time with others waiting safely outside for their turn. All residents must wear masks, bring someone to help with loading and unloading, and sanitize all equipment before returning it to the Loan Room. You may make reservations on the website or at the Loan Room up to two months in advance of your needs, but walk-in loans are also welcome. We will continue to respond to actual medical emergencies outside of open hours, but expect that most requests can be met on our open Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will be glad to see you again and meet your short-term loan needs.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Yes, the Rains Came Our monsoon rains did arrive and so did many weeds. Keep an eye out for desert broom and spurge, and remove them early. Please make every effort to stay ahead of the weed situation in your yard. With the summer rains, new growth on trees occurred. Note that trees must be kept trimmed up more than seven feet above sidewalks so as not to encroach upon walkers and for visibility of stop signs at corners. Most bean pods are down now and should be removed from the ground in your yard. Is your house number blocked by vegetation? Should a possible emergency arise, your home address needs to be found quickly. For safety reasons, please trim any vegetation blocking numbers on your home, so that they are visible from the street. Our committee wants to issue a special thanks to all the residents who work diligently in keeping their yards in good shape throughout the year, especially in our hot summer months. Keep up the good work.

It will come as no surprise to most of you that the Posse has suspended patrols until January 2021, at the earliest. I recently spoke to our General Manager, Mark Wade, and confirmed with the Posse board that it is just too uncertain to have members in the Posse vehicle where they could not social distance. While we do have a number of husband and wife and domestic partner teams, we do not have enough to routinely fill our schedule. Trying to determine on a monthly basis what to do has been hard on our volunteers as they don’t know what to expect. We decided the decision to suspend patrols was best for all. While COVID-19 has been a challenge for all of us, it certainly has influenced the Posse and our mission. We hope you will consider joining once things are safe for us to resume our duties. We need you. This is a way to help your community while assisting the Oro Valley Police Department in covering our area. Six hours a year, two 3-hour patrols, is all the commitment we ask. Join us.

The Properties Committee initiated and coordinated a lighting improvement project in the Artisan Center and AFC. The project was completed in July and replaced older fluorescent tube lighting with highly efficient LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps. This was done in all of the Artisan Center Rooms, Gift Shop, all display cases, AFC gym and yoga studio. A total of 582 lamps were upgraded in 291 fixtures. The project will save 32,600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year equating to $4,075 annual utility costs plus additional maintenance staff savings. Total cost to SCOV is $8,889 including TEP utility rebate of $3,178 resulting in simple economic payback of 2.2 years. Cost savings aside, the new LED lights provide higher and more consistent light levels, better color render-

We are excited to open the new greens for play once we come out of overseeding on October 12. We were hoping to play on the greens before overseeding; however, we have decided not to rush the process and open too early. The good news is the new driving range tee is now open. And during the time we have the course closed for overseeding, the driving range tee will be accessible off the new grass teeing area. The golf course will be closed during overseeding starting Monday, September 21, through Sunday, October 11, and will open for play on Monday, October 12. We would ask the help of all residents to make sure not to drive golf carts or walk on the golf course while the new grass seed is being planted and watered. Please stay on the cart path. The Pro Shop will be open regular hours, 6 AM-5 PM, through Sunday, September 20. We will be closed September 21 and 22 and reopen for limited hours 9 AM-Noon, September 23-October 11. When we open for play on Monday, October 12, we will have a special grand opening for members and residents only. All golf carts must remain on the cart path only for a couple of weeks. The projected date for golf carts to start driving on the grass will be Monday, October 26.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086
The month of September is the time of the year that we overseed the winter ryegrass on the golf course for the upcoming season. Just as a reminder, there will be no overseeding on all the newly sodded areas around the greens, approach areas, and driving range tee.
Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, September 2020
This year the overseed is going to be different from previous years. It has been announced and documented in multiple formats over the past year that the areas around the greens that were impacted by the Greens Renovation Project will NOT be overseeded this winter. However, the tees and fairways outside the construction area will be overseeded to provide green playing surfaces during the winter months. The par 3 approaches, as well as approaches on the 1st, 15th and 18th holes will not be overseeded in conjunction with the construction areas being skipped this year. The size of these approaches that are outside of the construction area is very small and does not make sense to overseed. This will also allow us to control the Poa Annua that has really infested these approaches over the years. They were the first holes that were not overseeded many years ago, so they are due for a break to get cleaned up. The driving range tee will not be overseeded this winter as well. It needs a full year to establish before it can be overseeded to prevent damage to the new sod. That means the tee will go dormant when the weather gets cold in December through February. Golfers will have to hit off the synthetic turf during those months, since the tee will not be able to heal from divots. When the weather warms in the spring and the tee starts to green up, then play can resume on the tee again.

It was a hot summer, but we are almost through it. Hooray. The golf course renovation is in its final phases with the greens all sprigged out and starting to show green. The course is really looking good. It is shaping up nicely to be a great fall. The restaurant is open on a limited basis, so you can get a cool drink and something to eat after your round. The men’s club held its first event July 28, a fun day, and we started playing events August 5. We are happy to announce there is a full schedule planned for the rest of the year. The first will be a Heartless Scramble September 2, followed by a four-player scramble September 9, and the last event before overseeding, a low net on September 16. Overseeding will begin Monday, September 21, and run through Sunday, October 11. Check out the calendar on Golf Genius for all events. Remember that you have to register on Golf Genius to play.

Attention all SCOV clubs and members: Does your club have needs for equipment or annual supplies? Then look no further than your SCV Community Foundation. Now is a perfect time to donate to the SCV Foundation where your funds will impact your local community. This spring and summer we took meals to our local health care heroes at Oro Valley Hospital, assisted our recently formed Veterans Club with the purchase of U.S. flags for SCOV buildings and provided funds for the purchase of cloth and supplies needed by sewers in the Casa Amigas Club. The Foundation hopes you and yours had a wonderful summer and that you will continue to stay safe and distanced.

When we resume meeting, the Tapestry Rug Hooking group will meet on Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. We welcome new members; if interested in learning our art, please contact Coni Arseneau or Carrie Wiley. Our club provides instruction and practice materials. Learn more about our group by visiting our website listed above. The group will post on the Sewing Room’s sign-up calendar when it is ready to start meeting again. To access the calendar, you need to be a member of the Thimblelenas. The picture at right is a project completed by John Shaw. If anyone has participated in a club with John, you have then shared John’s “punny” comments/jokes. This project is an illustration of John’s humor. The “Come In” rug when turned around says “Go Away.” By John’s placement of his rug, visitors will readily know whether they are in or out.

The Astronomy Club is known for conducting monthly lectures by world-class astronomers and other scientists. In normal years the monthly meetings begin in October and continue through the following May. This year we will be guided by COVID-19 data and guidance from SCOV administration. We are working on methods of providing taped lectures which can be accessed safely in your home. More information will be forthcoming. This month we would like to call your attention to the southern sky where each clear evening you will see a very bright object–the largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter. Just to the left of Jupiter you will see a somewhat less bright planet, Saturn. Saturn, with its beautiful rings, is often called the most spectacular object in the night sky. Jupiter can easily be seen with binoculars, while Saturn requires a telescope. You may have seen in the news that NASA launched a spacecraft on July 30 which contains a Mars Rover called Perseverance. That Rover will land on Mars on February 18, 2021, after a seven-month voyage. In future Tipsters we will provide more information about this mission. Persever-

ance will deploy the first helicopter ever to fly in the Martian skies. Called Ingenuity, the helicopter will operate in an atmosphere 99% less dense than ours on earth, and at temperatures down to minus 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Quite an engineering challenge. Stay tuned.

Email Sharyn to receive an invitation. Club member Harvey Gardner takes a fresh look at the ups and downs of love in a poem that artfully describes both aspects: The Buts of Love Love’s high-flying feeling / can’t stay aloft forever. / Inflicted pain can force / a sudden bumpy landing. But, although it’s hard / to handle hurt, set aside / tempting vengeful plans, / withdrawal into quietude / can allow healing feelings / to launch loving thoughts / looping, / I forgive you… I forgive you…I forgive you… But, love that’s grounded / and mothballed begs abiding / this basic self-love law—Suffering ad infinitum is optional.

It’s been a very unusual summer with the COVID restrictions and extra hot and dry weather. We’ve had to adapt our daily routines. Our canine companions need socializing, exercise and mental stimulation just like we do. Some things we can do with our dogs include: watching animal programs on TV, playing hide and seek “go find it” with treats or toys, revisiting training practice, teaching new tricks. There are many free YouTube videos on training. Give it a try. Don’t forget pet summer safety. Always have a full bowl of fresh water available. Take walks in early morning or later evening, avoid hot sidewalks and roads that can burn their paws, never leave your dog unattended outside or in the car, and be aware of javelinas, coyotes, snakes and toads.

The Garden Club is one of the largest clubs in SCOV. Due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 outcome, we will be following the Governor’s and SCOV guidelines. Due to these unusual times, the Garden Club will be on hiatus until further notice. Please watch the Tipster and “This Week in SCOV” for any updates or changes. September is a transitional month. There are things you can do this month to beautify and enhance your garden. Plant cool weather annuals toward the end of the month such as dianthus, angelonia and cosmos. Don’t plant pansies until cooler weather is here to stay, October 15 or later. Don’t depend on rains this month to give plants enough water. Encourage new flowers on your Mexican Bird of Paradise by removing seed pods. Do a light pruning of roses by month’s end. Add more mulch over roots.

Same song second, third or fourth verse. The Republican Club was unable to hold their August meeting due to COVID-19. The club is, therefore, unable at this time to determine if there will be an open meeting that would normally be scheduled on Tuesday, September 15, 3 PM. Even if the the SCOV facilities are then open, what will be the requirement for social distancing, outside attendees, number of attendees, etc? How comfortable would the membership be attending a meeting? If we are still unable to hold a meeting in September we will resort to other means to forward and process information regarding the upcoming general election campaign. Please continue to monitor the Tipster and for even more current information check the Thursday weekly email, “This Week in SCOV,” for further Republican Club information. Hopefully, new COVID-19 cases will continue to drop and the SCOV leaders will be able to give our club the go-ahead on our plans to resume Wednesday dance practices. Your board continues to monitor changing circumstances and to develop plans and options to be ready when we can begin lessons and dances as well. Folk dancing is more fun than a treadmill and healthful exercise for balance, muscle, mind and mood. For most dances, we hold hands in a circle to perform non-gymnastic steps to the enchanting music and rhythms of diverse cultures (including our own). Neither prior experience nor a partner is needed. Typical dance sessions consist of 15 folk dances, most with instructions. Folks may always sit out a dance to rest. Drop in to see if this internationally popular dance form is your cup of tea. Also, search FDCSCOV on www.YouTube.com to see us in action online.

They all offer different levels, and I always feel better working out with them for just 20-30 minutes, twice a day. “Blue Hawaii” is also on YouTube to bring back the hula vibe (the women dressed in blue version). Check them out, stay fit and well, because I know we’ll be dancing together again soon. Now that we’re a variety show-style performing group, along with hula, there’ll be a lot of “Ain’t We Got Fun” happening. I would love to hear from you: email, text or phone, you know I’m home.

Like other organizations, our bylaws never anticipated a global pandemic and the changes that would be required to continue conducting business for our club. We revised our bylaws to accommodate distance meetings and voting, and members were given the opportunity in a Zoom meeting to discuss and ask questions about the proposed changes. Following the Zoom session, an electronic ballot was sent to vote on the changes. Thanks to all our members for adapting to our changing circumstances. If you are a Sunliners member and you did not receive the information about the bylaws changes by email, please contact one of our officers listed above. We are glad to be making some progress toward conducting club business in a more inclusive way, but our most important objective is to be together once again and dance.

Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer, at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band–you’ll need to bring your own. A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

It’s still summer here and a great time to commit to a core strengthening exercise routine. Why not try Pilates? Classes are still small making it a good time to learn. SCOV offers Joseph Pilates mat classes twice per week on Mondays and Thursdays. The benefits that come from performing specific strengthening and stretching exercises strengthen the body’s core muscles (your abdomen and back). The exercises increase spine mobility and build flexibility. More benefits include better balance and muscle tone and increased stamina. Because the classes are designed for seniors, all exercises can be modified and are taught by two experienced instructors. The cost is $8/class with annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or just come by and watch when we resume meeting. Call Mary.

Grief Recovery and Support Pari Foster 520-248-3658 parifoster@gmail.com Tuesdays, 1-2 PM, Catalina Vista, Art Room (suspended until futher notice)
When the grief group resumes meetings, we will be practicing social distancing, as our room is quite large, and also, to keep safe, masks will be mandatory. We will continue to focus on loss in a safe, loving and caring environment. Due to the COVID-19, many of us may be experiencing a new kind of loss in addition to losses from things before COVID-19. There may be loss of friends or family, grief from loneliness due to sheltering at home, and other grief issues associated with the pandemic. None of these things should be taken lightly. The grief journey can take time, but is vital to healing, and by sharing with others, the burden is lightened. Contact Pari or check the SCOV website to learn when meetings will begin again.

Caregivers and/or people with Parkinson's are welcome to attend. We have speakers at most meetings with topics of interest. "I have Parkinson's, but Parkinson's doesn't have me."
Survivors of a Loved One Who Died By Suicide Contact Ester Leutenberg 520-818-0016 ester36@gmail.com
