From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors jmitchscov@gmail.com

Bright Days Ahead? It’s Up to Us by Jim Mitchell The recent passing of singer/songwriter Johnny Nash revived a song that seems appropriate as we enter Thanksgiving season. If you remember it, sing along. “I can see clearly now the rain is gone. I can see all obstacles in my way. Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind. It’s gonna be a bright, bright, sunshiny day.” I think we can all agree that there have been obstacles in our way to a bright future in SCOV this year. No one could have anticipated the challenges the Board, staff and each member of our community have faced individually and collectively as we try to redefine what “normal” means. But I’m optimistic that bright, sunshiny days lie ahead. And that it’s up to each one of us to help create them. When you think about the old “normal,” we had much more in common than we had separating us. We enjoyed sharing time in The Views Restaurant and lounge, on the golf course, pickleball and tennis courts, at the pools and in our 130-plus clubs, which now are reopening. When I think about what attracted my wife and me to buy our first home here in 2001, it was all the amenities and beautiful weather to enjoy them in. What attracted you here? I’ll bet those things still exist and are probably better now. Think of how much better the Aquatic & Fitness Center, The Views Golf Course, The Views Restaurant have become over the past few years. Then think of the planned improvements in the pipeline. This month, the Board will have a special meeting to begin discussing and prioritizing future projects. Later, residents will have the opportunity to provide input on updating the Long Range Plan. The Activity Center renovation is a top priority because it’s the farthest along. But in early spring, the Board approved committees to plan for a new exercise pool at the AFC, a renovated Artisan Center and an improved Welcome Center. You can help decide if these are still our priorities. How? Each new committee will need resident volunteers to guide us through each project. The Board will have two vacancies to fill in next year’s election. Please consider using your tal-

Constantly Adjusting I am pretty sure most of us are tired of hearing about COVID-19. I won’t belabor you with more information about it, as I know you can do the research. What I would like to share with you is what SCOV is doing to cope with our situation. At the August 20 Special Board Meeting, the Board of Directors requested that I put together an adjusted and updated reopening plan. When the Board first came up with a reopening plan, the restrictions imposed by the governor-issued executive orders were quite different than they are now. I looked at how we have been approving clubs to reopen versus how the state restrictions have changed and came up with a plan that I think will work well. I presented this plan to the Board of Directors at their September Board meeting and they approved. In simple terms, the state bases the level of opening criteria on COVID-19 transmission levels within each county. Each week the State Department of Health (ADHS) looks at the levels and rates Pima County as either Substantial Transmission, Moderate Transmission or Minimal Transmission. The level determines the amount of opening of most businesses. Note here that certain types of business have special criteria, for example, restaurants and bars. At the time of this writing, Pima County is designated as Moderate Transmission. This in essence means businesses can open at 50% occupancy. We followed this guideline and opened our rooms on October 1 at 50% for meetings as long as 6-foot social distancing can be maintained. For dances and exercise, we are using the 12-foot social distancing model which allows for movement during the exercise and dance. This means there will be fewer people allowed to dance or participate in the exercise classes as they maintain social distancing. Other protocols include no nonresidents or guests, no shared food or drink, washing or sanitizing hands required upon entry, and masks are required which cover both the mouth and the nose. We earnestly hope these protocols and this new direction will allow limited opening of SCOV facilities while keeping our residents safe. Remember, vulnerable adults (those over 65 years of age and those with pre-existing medical conditions) and others are safest in their own homes. Risk is associated with being involved with others, according to the CDC. You should consider your own health and age as you decide what you would like to be involved in. Here’s hoping you all stay safe and healthy by making good choices as we reopen.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070

Zoom and the Technology Club Zoom has become a standard video conferencing tool for us during COVID-19. We have all learned a lot about this platform. However, not everyone is technologically gifted like those in the Technology Club led by Paul Sherwood. They offer assistance to committees and clubs to learn how to navigate this software. They are helping us get back to business in our committees and to reconnect with club members. So, a thousand thank yous to Paul Sherwood and the Technology Club for how they’ve used their time and talent to help SCOV be better during these strange times. And, if you happen to need a little assistance in this area for your committee or club, email paulgsherwood@gmail.com.

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 What’s Happening? Each year managers give updates on what is going on in their departments. I think this is a good time to pass on that information. As most of you know my job is a myriad of duties for the Association. Buying cookies and setting up entertainment, speakers and events are a small part of my job. During the shutdown, I have passed on ideas such as driveway happy hour, chalk walks and painting rocks. My title is Programs and Facilities Director. One of my main duties is to lead the monitor team. No other community in Southern Arizona has monitors. Set up of rooms, etc., are done by the monitors. All work orders for things to be repaired or replaced come to me to pass on to maintenance. Clubs are overseen by my department with much help from Coco Sullivan. Follow-up on all incidents in the community is done by me. We want to make sure anyone injured on our property, or who fell ill, is followed up with a call from me. Many projects are given to me by the General Manager to follow up or complete. Staff is great at helping each other. In July, I personally made 300 calls to residents regarding signing up for our new trash service. I hope this gives you a small snapshot of the many things I do. So, when you see me in Safeway buying cookies, please know that my duties are much more. Stay safe.

Community Services - Katy Mosier kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Thanks for Your Patience During these last months, our community has stepped up to meet the challenges presented by COVID-19 in many different ways. With regard to making changes to the exteriors of your homes, there have been delays in addressing submittals, changes in process and a new learning curve for many of us. All of our submittals for paint, in-house projects such as roofs and pavers, regular Architectural Review Committee (ARC) approvals and room additions and patio covers are now generated by the homeowner digitally on our website. It is up to the applicant to carefully fill out the forms, attach pictures of brochures and materials, sketches and blueprints in some cases, and communicate any other details that might assist the ARC members in making an informed decision about the submittal. New procedures can often be met with resistance, but you have stepped up and tackled new ways head on. Congratu-

One of the many ways our lives have changed during the COVID-19 pandemic has been in the way we eat. You have heard of the Quarantine 15 weight gain, but aside from possibly snacking too much with all this free time on our hands, I wondered how else our eating habits have changed with restaurants closed or limited in their offerings, and gatherings with friends and family curtailed. In researching top trends in cooking during COVID-19, I found that comfort foods, convenience cooking, and cocktails figure prominently. Here’s how the Library can help with the three “Cs” of COVID eating. Half Baked Harvest Super Simple by Tieghan Gerard, features a recipe for Spinach and Artichoke Mac and Cheese, a healthier take on that classic American comfort food, as well as 124 other quick comfort-food forward dishes. To address convenience in cooking, we have just added The Ultimate Instant Pot Cookbook for Two by Janet A. Zimmerman, The Skinnytaste Air Fryer Cookbook by Gina Homolka and Keto Air Fryer by Maria for those with instant pots or air fryers (and those who have them on their holiday wish list). With happy hour becoming virtual, or moving to front or back patios, a resource for the home bartender is called for. Delish Ultimate Cocktails: Why Limit Happy to an Hour? by Joanna Saltz provides recipes for drinks with fun names like Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Bloody Mary and Christmosas (for the holidays), and includes a section on nonacoholic “mocktails” like Cranberry Basil Sangria. Stop by the Library to find inspiration for your COVID-19 culinary challenges.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 How to Maximize Your Effort When Walking Once you have committed to a daily or weekly routine of walking, compliance with this schedule is the key to its efficacy. You must make sure you stick to your schedule. No excuses. Start slowly and get comfortable before increasing any distance or intensity, but once you have, there are a few ways to make sure your effort is not in vain. It may seem silly, but your technique for walking can turn a normal walk into an exercise stride. This basically relies on proper posture and purposeful movements. Some tips for an effective exercise walk can include: Heads up: You should be looking forward and not at the ground. Neck, shoulders and back relaxed and not stiff. Arm swings: You should swing your arms freely with a slight bend at the elbow. You can exaggerate this movement as you progress. Tight core muscles: Slightly tighten your abdominal muscles so that your back is straight and not tilted forward or backward. Step properly: With every stride, you should concentrate on walking heel to toe. As with any exercise routine, you should check with your physician to be sure what you are doing is safe and appropriate for you. Each of us is different and so should be our exercise routine. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear, such as correctly fitting sneakers, and make sure your route is clear of obstructions, like cracked sidewalks. It is critical that you should warm up by walking slowly at first and pick up the pace as you walk your route. After exercising, always cool down by walking slowly and then stretch gently to call it a day. If you feel any pain, you should stop and consult your physician. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, November 10, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, November 11, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) continues to refine its electronic application process. Over the summer, applications were received at a steady pace and projects were approved in a timely manner, in spite of the new process. We have received valuable comments from residents and contractors, which have been incorporated into the online application forms. These forms can be accessed on the SCOV website by following the pathway below. To assist residents who are not comfortable preparing their own application, the ARC has teamed with the Technology Club to provide assistance. Keep in mind, we don’t pay anything for the paper phone books, and we have no control over the publisher or the printer. The publisher received our files mid-September and should hand off to the printer on October 30. Unfortunately we still don’t have a delivery date. “This Week in SCOV” email will have any updates as I get them. In the meantime, I can’t wait until you see Gary Brown’s terrific cover photograph. As always, choosing the cover is extremely difficult. The online directory is updated monthly, thus always has the most current information. To update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “To change your directory listing….” Alternatively, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

At a time when many of us feel we can’t stand to be cooped up any longer and there just doesn’t seem to be any return to sanity in our lives, The Views Restaurant, together with the Food and Beverage Committee, can celebrate small gains. Did you know that the limit of four persons per table no longer exists, and now up to eight can share two tables pushed together? Are you aware that a new Blue Ribbon panel has been formed to assist Mark Wade in evaluating the next big steps for the restaurant? If you are still afraid of crowds, but

would like to try the The Views’ meat loaf dinner, you can still do that by ordering a “Ready to Heat” dinner, and for fun, take along a growler of beer (I prefer Foggy Doggy). And finally, we saw the return of dancing to The Views with the Rock ’n Roll Club dance on September 26. All these steps seem small in comparison to the limitless lives we experienced before, but it’s important to understand that it took “out of the box” thinking from many individuals to make these things happen. So instead of cursing the restrictions, step up and rethink your lives and reinvent the activities we all love. The Food and Beverage Committee is here to help.

Fall has arrived, though difficult to tell outside. The Friends of the Library board has met and is working hard to develop new plans for our members this year. Events may look a little different—and you may look a little different in your masks. (Name tags would be a great fashion accessory to wear.) We are looking forward to another Great Reads event for our members with our very own BJ Kass. Save the date for November 12, 10 AM-Noon. More information will be coming your way soon. Unfortunately, our February Home Tour will be postponed for a year, but we can expect some new events this year that are still in the planning stages. Keep using your Library and reading all the wonderful new books and seeing all the new videos that Kate acquires for us. We will all find new ways to enjoy our FOL activities.

In 2014, Nancy moved to SCOV and discovered the Glass Studio. One of her favorite techniques is called On-Edge. This technique requires a lot of cutting strips, designLinda Wilkes and Nancy Eckhoff ing layout and creating fancy component center pieces. Then slumping into a mold. In 2017, Linda purchased a bag of jewelry at an estate sale which contained a beautiful unique necklace that was handmade. “That particular necklace became the impetus to retrieve my jewelry tools and revisit a personal joy that I had long ago abandoned.”

Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1; Loan Room hours: Tue., Thu., 8-9 AM www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/loan-room/

The Halloween goblins, witches, ghosts and other scary creatures are gone for another year. We need to beware of other creatures, however, and keep them out of our garages. Javelinas, coyotes, bobcats, bats, pack rats and snakes, to name a few, are creatures we don’t wish to find lurking in our garages. Be sure to keep your garage doors closed, especially at night. If you see a neighbor’s garage door open late at night, please let them know. Keeping each other safe is a goal we can achieve if we’re all vigilant. November is the month of Thanksgiving and the Posse is especially thankful to all the residents of SCOV for their support and helping take care of each other. We’re thankful for the SCOV Board of Directors and the staff. We’re also thankful for our partners in crime prevention, the Oro Valley Police Department. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

The nonpartisan Government Affairs Committee conducts political forums and secures speakers on issues that are of special interest to our community.

The Loan Room is open and things are moving smoothly. Staff are wearing masks and setting equipment aside to allow it to be sanitized and quarantined before reuse, and residents are wearing masks and distancing from each other. No more than two residents at a time are allowed in the Loan Room. We are open our usual hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. Reservations may be made in person or on the website up to two months in advance. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 A Special Sincere Thanks Not often enough do we say “thank you” to the people around us. Perhaps, as homeowners, we should say an occasional thank you to our neighbor who borders our personal property. If, when he has his own yard cleaned up by a landscaper, he includes part of yours which may have a problem caused by his foliage, it just might deserve a thank you. Neighborhood Pride issues thanks to all homeowners who have: • kept trees trimmed so stop signs are visible • kept trees trimmed up high off sidewalks • kept plants trimmed back off sidewalks • kept their yards weed-free, neat and tidy • made sure all lights are burning in house number plates. Thanksgiving is a good time for us to sincerely thank all who take pride in their own personal property and work diligently to keep our entire community a beautiful place in which to live.

The Properties Committee was recently asked by management to investigate enhanced air purification methodologies for SCOV buildings. Committee members researched recommendations from the CDC and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. A list of suggested procedures and practices was developed and submitted. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. We have begun meeting via Zoom. See the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates and times.

Tipster Editorial Chair Karen Koopmans 520-818-6337 skkoops@gmail.com

Why is the Tipster article deadline the eighth of the month? That seems so early. We strive to have a high-quality publication for our community. The Tipster goes through two editorial reviews by Tipster Committee members in addition to the time needed for organizing the articles and formatting the magazine. Add time for printing and on-time delivery so that the volunteer collators can insert the flyers, and we need the eighth of the month deadline to accomplish all that work. Thank you to all those who submit their articles on time.

Do you have a Thank You Corner or In Memoriam submission for the Tipster? These can be submitted online using the Tipster Article Form at www.suncityorovalley.com/news-info/ the-tipster/submit-article/ For In Memoriam, information should only be submitted by a family member or with the permission of the individual’s family. The requested information is name, date of passing and if the individual was a current or former SCOV resident. If needed, family members may call or email the Tipster editor with their information. If you submit a Thank You, the submission should not exceed 50 words and be general in nature without singling out any individuals.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086

Our annual Welcome Back Fiesta Club Fitting day party with Charley’s famous barbeque is Friday, November 6, 11 AM-3 PM at the driving range. The event includes vendor demos of golf equipment from Cobra, Srixon, Cleveland, XXIO and with footwear from Puma and Skechers. All will be available at special discounted pricing. One of the many benefits of becoming an annual member during the month of November is all members will receive one 10-minute complimentary golf lesson from one of our professional staff. Contact Tim, Tom, Todd or Katelyn in the Pro Shop to book your lesson. The annual Pro-Member Invitational is Monday, November 23. We invite one professional and an amateur from another golf club to join two of our members or residents. For more information and registration, check with the Pro Shop. As a reminder, our golf cart policy is two golf carts per group. If you have a private golf cart, you may continue to ride as a single if you wish. Only two carts will be allowed in the fairway or rough at a time. Additional carts in the group need to remain on the cart path. If you have questions, contact the Pro Shop or read the monthly “Tee to Green” newsletter. Visit the Pro Shop or our website for more information about participating in our fun club activities. Also, don’t forget every Friday and Saturday, November to April, we have Charley’s Barbeque Grille at the turn from 11 AM-2 PM.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

The first part of November is when the golf course has dried up from the large amount of water used during overseeding. The ground is firm enough to allow the golf carts off the paths and on to the fairways. Cart traffic has been controlled the last few years using a system of blue stakes to direct golf carts on and off the paths. This would be a good time to refresh everyone on the rules associated with the blue stake gates to help minimize confusion. Each hole, excluding the par 3’s, will have a set of blue stakes at the start of the hole and at the end of the hole. These are gates where golf carts will pass through to both leave and return to the cart path. Once the cart leaves the path through the gate, it should drive straight to the fairway. The cart will remain in the fairway until it reaches the end of the fairway, where it will leave through the exit gate. If driving the rest of the fairway is unnecessary, then exit at any time, 90 degrees straight to the cart path. The goal of directing the golf carts onto the fairways is to keep the traffic in the roughs to a minimum. When the roughs go dormant in the winter, they can’t recover and start to get smashed down. The system has worked well the last several years, and the roughs held up much better for the winter season.

Welcome back to all who left for the summer months. Our leagues will be in full swing once again. Remember to switch over to the winter mix for divot repair and keep your cart on the path near the greens. We would like to encourage all golfers to practice a prompt pace of play. As all of our leagues have grown in membership, this is important. The pace of play affects all players. The rules of ready golf are also encouraged. If you have questions regarding the golf course, contact your league representative.

Photo by Tom Prall North American Aviation’s F-100 Super Sabre was a sleek, swept-back-wing, two-seat fighter, first produced in 1950. This reproduction of the F-100 model F was built by Fred Faust. Knicknamed the Misty, this plane was employed as a forward air controller (Fast FAC) in Vietnam. Flying low and fast, its mission was target acquisition. Many ex-Misty pilots flew as instructors with the 162nd Air National Guard here in Tucson after the Vietnam War. The Model Club is back operating under the SCOV COVID-19 guidelines. One of the clothing articles we starting sewing this past year is infant and toddler sleep sacks. They are a popular item for new mothers; however, these items may cost more than they can afford. Two of the community organizations that we work with are requesting sleep sacks. Too many blankets in an infant’s crib become a safety issue and sleep sacks reduce the need for those coverings. Things are happening in the Artisan Center again and though it is scaled back from the norm, there is a great amount of activity taking place. Cheer Bears has been meeting every other Wednesday all summer long, and individuals have been working at their homes cutting and supplying work for the stuffers in the Sewing Room. Starting in October, we returned to our regular weekly meetings. Group sizes are limited, and you still have to sign up ahead of time to be allowed in the room, but we still are putting all our love into the bears as always. Be safe and pray for us all to get through this together. We look forward to the return of our good friends we have not seen for such a long time. Many of our bear friends will be marching to new homes this month and next.

Great news, our study is continuing in Revelation. Some changes have been made to accommodate the COVID-19 concerns, and all attendees must wear a mask. Hand sanitizer will be available at the door. Also, until protocol changes, we’ll be seated without tables and using distance between chairs. This seems cumbersome for now but well worth the effort to be able to share in the study of such an important and timely book of the Bible. Study guides are available. Some of the men meet at The Views Restaurant afterward for breakfast. Plan to make this a weekly treat for yourself. Precept Women’s Bible Study

All participants will need to wear mask protection upon entering the building and through the time of the study. Please bring your own water bottle and/or insulated coffee cup. Refreshments and drinks will not be served. We will be studying the Old Testament Book of Daniel, such a relevant study during this time and any time. Please contact Sheila Witler 720-7757623 if you are interested in joining our study or if you have any questions.

Poets Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 520-825-6762 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 10:30 AM-12:30 PM, WC1

The threat of catching the coronavirus is making every day more precious, even if we’re mostly confined to our homes. Poets Corner member Harvey Gardner celebrates each new day in a wonderful poem called “Today”. Here are some of the highlights: Today will be finger-flicked and toppled / by Tomorrow… Today is a Russian Nesting Doll / of medium size resting in a bigger / Tomorrow while little Yesterday / patiently awaits its removal from Today. Today, like a Nathan’s hot dog eating / champion having gorged on glory / for an eye blink, will be all important but soon / must wither and step aside for Tomorrow. Today…a wonder-gift, a miracle we greet / with a yawn, a stretch, a tooth brush, a cup / of coffee, and corn flakes treading water in milk… Today is unique…” Newcomers are welcome to join our Monday morning Zoom meetings, 10:30 AM-12:30 PM. We will therefore postpone club gatherings until at least January 2021, at which time we can reassess the situation and

This months’ featured dog is Boomer, a three year old Australian Shepherd miniature, if you can call 40 pounds miniature. Boomer was Fred Roberts’ gift from wife LeeAnna three years ago. They took him home when he was just eight weeks old. He was so easy to train as he is smart as a whip. He is also very affectionate and, at times, quite Boomer funny. He has such a presence that their home feels quite empty without him. Boomer is clearly the very best birthday present Fred ever received, and he thanks LeeAnna time and time again for him. Are any of you new to SCOV who have a dog? Would you like to join our club? Although COVID has put a long pause on our meetings, the dog park is open and you can meet new friends while your dog can socialize, too. Give our membership gals a call.

The November meeting will be held with only the board and the show directors sometime in early November. All members will be sent the notes and decisions from this meeting. Please retain your Big Guns show tickets for refund or exchange sometime in February 2021. No ticket, no refund. Please all, stay safe.

All veterans, male/female, private to general, one military assignment or retired, active duty or reservist, combat or non-combat, everyone is welcome. Starting in November, meetings are held in the Auditorium due to increased membership, Wayne Klenda, left, receiving Certificate returning seasonal residents, of Appreciation from Mike LaBarbera and a larger area to provide a safe environment for members to attend meetings. Currently, masks are required while in SCOV buildings. We inform club members of VA entitlements and review relevant issues by email and during monthly meetings. We are a social club of proud veterans, helping veterans. Attend a meeting and see what we have to offer. In October our club partnered with Little Caesars and supplied 15 pizzas in support of five veteran temporary homeless housing units in Tucson. Start gathering gently used men’s and women’s clothing, gloves, belts, hats, etc., as collection begins between October 26 and November 11. Welcome back to our traveling members and welcome back to ballroom dancing. October finally brought opportunities to return to dancing on a limited basis. Our Wednesday practice time has been expanded to include both the Auditorium and the Kiva Patio to allow social distancing as well as both progressive and spot dance patterns. Sign-ups are required. No problem having enough room to dance. In November we look forward to continuing our practices in the Auditorium on Thursdays, and on Saturdays we will resume our classes that are led by a professional instructor. If you are a Sunliners member and you have not been getting updates by email, contact one of the officers listed above. Remember you can always find current information on our website. Since the shutdown started in March, our club members have learned things other than dance steps, specifically Zoom and SignUpGenius. Now we are looking forward to learning new dance steps again.

outs. Please ensure you have medical clearance to participate in vigorous physical activity prior to joining. We welcome new members.

Aqua Tone Marcia Polley 520-818-9073 Irmel Wheeler 520-334-0957 (cell) Tue., Thu., Sat., 9 AM, AFC/Pool (we cannot accept new members at this time)

Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer, at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band: you’ll need to bring your own. A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

Arthritis Water Pres. Sherry Olivier sherryolivier55@gmail.com Sec. Joy Sawyer joymaesawyer@comcast.net Mon., Wed., Fri., 1 PM, Oct.-Mar.; 10 AM, Apr.-Sep., AFC/Pool

Our club performs gentle water exercises designed by the Arthritis Foundation to help with range of motion, which are great for those of us with arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Currently, we have a rotating schedule, which allows 19 of our members who signed up to fill the 15 pool reservations that our club is allotted for our classes, and unfortunately, we will not be accepting new members until after the COVID restrictions are lifted. The current pool restrictions have been very difficult to deal with, but we’re happy that the pool is open. Please note: the outside air temperature must be 77 degrees or higher for the class to be held. We meet at 1 PM until further notice.

Energetic Exercise Marty Siracusa 520-825-6961 Mon., Wed., Fri., 8-9 AM, Auditorium (suspended until futher notice)

Let’s give thanks for all the opportunities we enjoy here in SCOV to stay fit and enjoy life. When SCOV reopens and safety guidelines are in place for large groups, come to our classes for a vigorous and beneficial aerobic and strength workout. Professional instructor Sally Martinez provides a variety of sessions to keep your muscles strong, joints well supported, body flexible and balance secure. Sally encourages us each to work out at our own pace: “Listen to your body!” New members are always warmly welcomed, both men and women. Your get-acquainted class is free. Class tickets are a bargain: only $30 for 12 classes.

Fitness Swim Contact: Dave Goodman goodman@sfu.ca Tue., Thu., Sat., 6:45-8 AM, AFC pool (suspended until futher notice)

The Fitness Swim Club provides a vehicle for swimmers to participate in a group swim workout. We generally go 2,400 to 3,000 yards per workout, mostly freestyle. Some do more, a few do less. Workouts are suitable for master swimmers, triathletes and those who would just like to participate in swim work-

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

Pilates has opened at the AFC again with group mat classes on Mondays, 3-4 PM, and Thursdays, 1:30-2:30 PM. Each class participant is striving to increase their core strength. Your core muscles are deep abdominal and back muscles that help stabilize your pelvis and spine. The Pilates exercises are simple and each class begins with warm-up exercises, stretching and deep breathing. The instructors oversee us at all times. They modify the most strenuous exercises for anyone with limitations. These classes result in benefits that can’t be beat: better balance (fewer falls), more flexibility (joints move again), increased muscle tone (you’re stronger), more energy and well-being. The cost is $8 cash per class and 2021 annual club dues will be $20 pp. Call Mary if you have any questions.

Tai Chi Co-chairs Kathy Patterson 616-350-6443 1969kal@comcast.net Pat Howard 541-621-4404 pathoward45@gmail.com Thu., 10-11:30 AM, AFC/Studio 1

Many medical professionals now recommend tai chi to help their patients improve balance and prevent falls. In our classes, we enjoy learning the tai chi form. We also increase flexibility, strength and learn to reduce stress. Our instructors Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich teach us how to apply tai chi principles to our daily lives. Our current 10-week class started October 8. Due to COVID-19 space restrictions, this session is limited to established students only, and the class is full. Hopefully, by January those restrictions will be relaxed and we can accommodate more students and welcome new students again.

Yoga Pres. Jan Wholey 520-638-7088 suncityyoga2018@gmail.com

We are pleased to offer two in-person yoga classes beginning this month. Torrey will be holding her class in the AFC regular yoga room on Tuesdays, 10:45 AMNoon. Her first class is Tuesday, November 3. Leah will hold her class in the Activity Center/Hopi Room on Wednesdays, 8:15-9:30 AM. Her first class begins Wednesday, November 4. You will need to sign up ahead of time for each class using SignUpGenius. Class size will be limited. Both classes will be open for sign up on Sunday, November 1, at 6 PM. Each class fee is $10 cash, payable upon entrance. No change will be given. Masks are required, as is social distancing of 12 feet. There will be hand sanitizer available at the door. Maria continues to offer Zoom classes at this time. You can contact her at info@mariaalive.com.

Scrabble Jan Fischer 520-825-2401 fischer_janice@comcast.net Fri., 1-3 PM, Desert Oasis

During the “Great Depression” of 1929 people were looking to find cheap entertainment. In 1933 an unemployed architect named Alfred Mosher Butts invented a game that lifted spirits of millions. He analyzed three different categories of number games such as dice, bingo, chess and checkers. Butts attempted to combine the thrill of chance and skill by combining the elements of anagrams and crossword puzzles into a scoring game first called “Lexco.” He refined Lexco during the 1930s and 40s to become “Criss Cross Words.” Ultimately the game became “Scrabble.” Since I had to shorten the history of Scrabble for this article, I hope you find it interesting enough to give the game a try. Our club members are not sharks; we just enjoy each other’s company for a time. We meet on Friday afternoons from 1-3 PM and welcome experienced players as well as novices. Don’t be afraid to visit us. We play for the enjoyment of meeting each other and enjoy interacting with other players. Please try us. Occasional away rides start from a distant location. Weekly, a mountain bike option takes a few of us to the Tortolita rangelands, containing some of the highest rated single track bike trails in the nation. It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Tom Caswell, president of the SCOV Billiards Club, in late September. Tom was universally liked by all. We will miss his constant cheerfulness, his dry sense of humor, and most of all, his unlimited supply of funny T-shirts. Infamous for making holes in the saguaros, drumming on houses and sometimes chipping away at the stucco, the Gila woodpecker is ever-present in our area and is the most common of the woodpeckers in SCOV. To add to its misdeeds, this cheerful gangster has the annoying habit of stealing sugar water from hummingbird feeders. Want to learn more? Hello hikers. The fall picnic has been cancelled due to the parks closure of the group areas. There will be a mileage awards presentation on Tuesday, November 3; see our website for details. Orientation hikes restarted in October, so if you have been waiting all summer to join, make sure you sign up for an orientation hike and join. Members, we are in need of guides for C and D hikes; please consider becoming a hiking guide. Our hikes fill rapidly; if you only lead one or two hikes a month, that would help relieve the pressure on our schedule. “I went on a hike yesterday, it peaked with some great views but went downhill from there.” –Unknown

Did you know seniors 70 and older pitch from a shorter distance with less effort and more accuracy? The shorter distance also makes the game more fun for women. YouTube has several videos of everything related to horseshoes. Check it out. Good exercise, good people and friendly competition.

Pickleball Pres. L. Nelson Brown Lnelsonb@gmail.com VP Membership Dave Burnham dburnhampton@gmail.com Sun.-Sat., 8 AM-9 PM www.scovpb.org

This summer our own Craig Jones was being attended to by the paramedics from Fire Station #339, located at Tangerine and Thornydale. Being our unofficial pickleball ambassador, Craig asked the paramedics if they played pickleball. They said that they had recently learned but were using yellow tape as a net! Craig contacted our board members who wholeheartedly agreed to give Fire Station #339 one of our two remaining portable nets. On Labor Day, Don Patch of #339 picked up the net and some paddles and balls from us. They sent us a photo of them playing and hope to play against us in the future. This is the second fire station that we have donated to thanks to our ambassador, Craig Jones.

Fire Station 339 with portable net from SCOV Pickleball Club Our winter schedule began on October 1 and includes a new club round-robin on Mondays and ladder play on Sundays. Go to our website for more information.

There have been a couple of changes to our protocol since the publication of October’s Tipster. There is no longer a need to to contact a partner or to make reservations to play. Changes to our schedule of play are posted below. We will still need to observe the safety measures set by management as follows: • Use the sanitizer provided at the entry before playing. • Wear masks while in the building and during play time. • Maintain at least 6 ft. distance from other players. • Play singles only, no doubles. • Play is limited to club members and residents at this time. There should generally be two rooms available with two tables in each room, with the exception of Saturdays, when we will only have one room and two tables. Each pair of singles can play for about an hour. Monitors will need time to sanitize tables and equipment before the next group comes in. This is only a temporary arrangement and we look forward to resuming our normal mode of operation. Schedule Tue., 3:30-5:30 PM, men/women club play Thu., 3:30-5:30 PM, men/women club play Fri., 2-5 PM, men/women open play Sat., 9 AM-noon, men/women club play Sun., 9 AM-5:30 PM, men/women club play (players need to let monitor know at least one hour in advance on Sundays)

Tennis Pres. Ron Martin 520-395-0608 martin.ron.16@comcast.net Treas. The reporter needs to apologize for the Tennis Club article in the September Tipster. He reported that club members were joyful with the moderating temperatures in September. Not true. 100 degree days continued into October. Hopefully, the record heat this summer will dissipate by November.

Even though it has been a very hot, dry summer and fall, there has been a core group of people out on the Desert Oasis courts enjoying POP Tennis and burning lots of unwanted calories at least three times a week. As the temperature moderates, there is no better time to get some exercise and learn a new sport at the same time. Stop over at the D.O. in the early morning hours and give it a try.

All Day Trippers meetings, trips and events, including the annual holiday dinner, have been cancelled through the end of 2020. Our group is too large to meet safely within the guidelines set by the State and Pima County at this time. Members who have paid their dues for 2020 will be excused from paying 2021 dues, since the club really didn’t have any activities this year. The trip we had planned to the Utah National Parks and Monument Valley has been postponed until September 2021. Keep watching the Tipster and “This Week in SCOV” for any updates, and stay safe until we can meet again. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

We are planning on having November’s membership meeting if we can arrange a venue that will allow for adequate social distancing. It might be outdoors on a lawn or patio. Watch your emails for the time and place. We have 10 proposed trips that are in desperate need of wagon masters, several are also uncertain as the destinations are currently closed. Hopefully, the destinations will open up in the coming months. Contact Carrie Wiley 360-510-1641 if you can possibly help coordinate these trips. See club photo on page 32.
