Tucson’s DARK SKY Initiative by Terry McFadden SCOV is subject to many of the general regulations of both county and city governments. One of these codes addresses the “Dark Sky.” This code supports the nearby observatories whose work is difficult when ground lights from Tucson/Oro Valley communities shine up toward the sky. SCOV does its part by listing limitations on the brightness of any exterior lighting that shines upward into the night sky. This limitation sets the maximum number of lumens that shine sky-ward from the exterior lighting at any residence. But just what is a lumen? Formerly this was expressed in watts instead of lumens. This was convenient when the most common light source in our yard lights was incandescent light bulbs. With the advent of alternate types of lighting such as fluorescent bulbs and LEDs that have become available for outside lighting, the brightness will vary greatly depending on the type of light source. The 25-watt limitation of the past no longer sufficiently restricts the brightness. Lumens, on the other hand, are a measure of the actual amount of light, or brightness, produced by any light source and are a more direct and accurate measure of the output. Currently, light bulb packaging states the number of lumens that the bulb produces. Add the number of lumens from each of the lights shining skyward from your residence to be sure that it is less than the maximum allowed. Check to see that the lumen rating for each light is within regulations. Section 2G-Lighting of the SCOV Development Standards states the limitations on all outdoor lighting. For example, it includes 250 lumens for a post light and 650 total lumens for holiday lighting. One benefit of the Dark Sky is the bright starry night sky we enjoy. Winter visitors often remark on our impressive night sky. Let’s do our part to support those beautiful starry night skies. December contains various celebrations making it generally a time of happiness and joy. Regardless of whatever group with which you identify, your Board wishes you the best of times, whether it be a Happy Hanukah, a Joyous Kwanzaa, a

Staying Vigilant Living the dream or the nightmare. This pandemic isn’t quite what I have in mind for my retirement. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t on most of your radar either. We’ve endured COVID since early in the year. Many are getting tired and worn down with all the restrictions in the state, county, town and our community. As a result, we may be getting a little lax in taking precautions to protect ourselves and those around us. At the time of this writing, I’m aware of a group that meets weekly. All of them felt well at their last meeting; however, within a few days one of the group was not doing so well and tested positive. By the time this is published the entire group should be finished self-quarantining, and hopefully, none of the rest test positive. Now is not the time to slow down our vigilance in staying safe. Now, as is often the case, we need to batten down the hatches. Seal up any holes that would allow this virus to leak in among us. Take all possible precautions including wearing masks, washing hands often and social distancing. Minimize your risk by limiting your exposure. The safest place is within your own home. I guess I’m an optimist. Hope is on the horizon, and midNovember, Pfizer claimed their vaccine is more than 90% effective. It has not yet been approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but emergency use authorization is hoped for soon after the efficacy analysis is positively confirmed and proved. Maybe there is a light at the end of this tunnel. As a home owners association, I think we’ll all cheer when we’re safely back out in the light. Till then, let’s keep our heads down, make good choices and always be thankful for what we have.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! What Tucson Has to Offer Adapted from visittucson.com

I

t doesn’t take long to learn that Tucson is a magical place to visit and live. With nearly 300 sunny days per year, there is no shortage of things to do, especially taking advantage of the outdoors and fresh air. Whether you’re new here or a long-timer, there’s plenty to do. Due to COVID restrictions, we suggest confirming that locations are open before you head out. Oro Valley activities will be covered in a later Tipster. Outdoors Bordering Tucson on the east and west are two sections of Saguaro National Park, where the saguaro cactus reigns supreme, sometimes towering to heights of 50 feet. The park Saguaro National Park West has something to offer year round, but in late February and March the wildflowers are in bloom creating a colorful desert show. Located in the Coronado National Forest, Sabino Canyon is close to town, but immediately takes you into a world where the city is left behind, with the Catalina Mountains rising immediately in front of you and rocky gorges and canyons accessible to be explored. A tram is available to take visitors into the canyon, and riders can get off at any stop to access trailheads, pools and picnic areas. At 9,159 feet above sea level and the southernmost place to ski in the United States (when the winter cooperates), Mount Lemmon towers above Tucson, yet is easily accessible by car. In the summer, the mountain is a great escape from high temperatures and offers a complete change of scenery. In the winter, come play in the snow, then head back down, often to shorts weather. Other places to visit are Madera Canyon and Kartchner Caverns State Park. Additionally, many walking, biking and hiking trails can be enjoyed near SCOV. Museums The word “museum” might give you the wrong impression of what’s contained in the 98 acres of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. It’s a zoo, an aquarium, a botanical garden and an art gallery all in one. With 230 animal species displayed in their natural habitat surrounded by 1,200 types of plants, if you want to understand the living, vibrant Sonoran desert, here’s where to start

One of the world’s largest aerospace museums, Pima Air and Space Museum started with just a few planes in 1976 and has grown to a collection of over 300 aircraft from throughout the history of flight – even better, many of the docents worked on or flew the aircraft they’re discussing. Cultural Sites and Events Mission San Xavier del Bac, a Catholic mission, built in 1783 about 10 miles south of downtown Tucson, is generally considered the best example of Spanish Colonial architecture in the United Mission San Xavier del Bac is also known as the White Dove States, but that of the Desert description only scratches the surface of the beauty and history of this place. The interior and exterior are both breathtaking, and the story of the church is a fascinating insight into the history of this region. The Tucson Festival of Books will be virtual in 2021. The fourth largest book festival in the U.S. is held at the University of Arizona campus and is a great opportunity to meet authors and enjoy a sunny spring day in March. Want to go for a drive? Tucson is becoming known for its many fun murals. See how many you can find https://bit.ly/ TucsonMurals. Entertainment Tucson is rich with live entertainment. The Tucson Symphony, Arizona Theater Company and Broadway in Tucson offer professional performances in addition to a myriad of musical and theatrical performances Watch a fun melodrama or concert at the Gaslight at the University Theatre on Tucson’s east side of Arizona. You won’t want to miss The Gaslight Theatre’s live melodrama performances, which are fun for all ages.

Scams and Fraud The Oro Valley Police are reporting higher than normal levels of scams and fraud as a result of the pandemic. Much is aimed at the 55+ community. Here is some information from the Federal Trade Commission to help keep us vigilant and allow you to act as your own advocate when faced with scam or fraud. “Crooks use clever schemes to defraud millions of people every year. They often combine new technology with old tricks to get people to send money or give out personal information. Here are some practical tips to help you stay a step ahead. 1. Spot imposters. Scammers often pretend to be someone you trust, like a government official, a family member, a charity, or a company you do business with. Don’t send money or give out personal information in response to an unexpected request — whether it comes as a text, a phone call or an email. 2. Do online searches. Type a company or product name into your favorite search engine with words like “review,” “complaint” or “scam.” Or search for a phrase that describes your situation, like “IRS call.” You can even search for phone numbers to see if other people have reported them as scams. 3. Don’t believe your caller ID. Technology makes it easy for scammers to fake caller ID information, so the name and number you see aren’t always real. If someone calls asking for money or personal information, hang up. If you think the caller might be telling the truth, call back to a number you know is genuine. 4. Don’t pay upfront for a promise. Someone might ask you to pay in advance for things like debt relief, credit and loan offers, mortgage assistance or a job. They might even say you’ve won a prize, but first you have to pay taxes or fees. If you do, they will probably take the money and disappear. 5. Consider how you pay. Credit cards have significant fraud protection built in, but some payment methods don’t. Wiring money through services like Western Union or MoneyGram is risky because it’s nearly impossible to get your money back. That’s also true for reloadable cards (like MoneyPak or Reloadit) and gift cards (like iTunes or Google Play). Government offices and honest companies won’t require you to use these payment methods. 6. Talk to someone. Before you give up your money or personal information, talk to someone you trust. Con artists want you to make decisions in a hurry. They might even threaten you. Slow down, check out the story, do an online search, consult an expert — or just tell a friend. 7. Hang up on robocalls. If you answer the phone and hear a recorded sales pitch, hang up and report it to the FTC. These calls are illegal, and often the products are bogus. Don’t press 1 to speak to a person or to be taken off the list. That could lead to more calls. 8. Be skeptical about free trial offers. Some companies use free trials to sign you up for products and bill you every month until you cancel. Before you agree to a free trial, research the company and read the cancellation policy. And always review your monthly statements for charges you don’t recognize. 9. Don’t deposit a check and wire money back. By law, banks must make funds from deposited checks available within days, but uncovering a fake check can take weeks. If a check you deposit turns out to be a fake, you’re responsible for repaying the bank.

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, December 2020

10. Sign up for free scam alerts from the FTC at ftc.gov/ scams. Get the latest tips and advice about scams sent right to your inbox. If you spot a scam, report it at ftc.gov/complaint. Your reports help the FTC and other law enforcement investigate scams and bring crooks to justice.”

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Happy Holidays What will 2021 bring? It seems like a short time ago we welcomed in 2020 with great hopes. Little did we know what was in store

for us all. We live in a community that is used to constant activities, and for the most part, that is why we bought our homes here. I am sure by the time you read this, more and more changes may be put into action. Please keep in mind we are all in this together, and if we stand together, we will all make SCOV a great safe community for all. I wish you a holiday filled with joy and hope and may all of you and your families stay safe.

Community Services - Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 ARC and In-House Submittals For those who have been away the past several months, you undoubtedly have seen many changes that have occurred because of COVID-19. One of the changes may not have come to your attention unless you have been wanting to update the exterior of your home. We are now processing all submittals, including paint, digitally through our website. We are no longer taking in-person submittals at the Welcome Center. Gone are the days of mounds of paper. If you want to make a submittal, please log into our website at www.suncityorovalley.com. If you have not already registered as a resident, please register. Go to Members > Member Services > For Your Home. There are two buttons from which to choose. One is for a paint submittal and the other is for anything else. Once you click on the button of choice, fill out the short initial request and submit. Then add the following email address to your contacts, so that future correspondence does not end up in your junk mail: scoroval@ciramail.com. This is very important. You will soon receive an email from scoroval@ciramail. com with a plot plan and link to the submittal form. Fill out the submittal and attach any support documents. If you do not have a scanner, take photos of support materials with your phone and attach them to your submittal. Click on Submit. If you are not technically savvy, don’t worry. Just contact Paul Sherwood of our Computer Club 520-329-7661 and he will be glad to assist you.

SCOV Library - Kate Cusumano www.suncityorovalley.com/amenities-facilities/library Online catalog: https://evolveopac.infovisionsoftware.com/suncityorovalley/ kcusumano@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8083

The Library has been busy putting new holiday books and movies on the shelf for your stay-at-home enjoyment. Newly added holiday book titles from favorite authors include The Gift of Family by Mary Monroe, A Dog’s Perfect Christmas by W. Bruce Cameron, Happily This Christmas by Susan Mallery, Christmas Cupcake Murder by Joanne Fluke, A MacCallister Christmas by William W. Johnstone, The Brightest Star by Fern Michaels and Holidaze by Christina Lauren. What would the holiday season be without watching movies from our newly expanded Hallmark Channel collection, or the classic Holiday Inn, Miracle on 34th Street, or How the Grinch Stole Christmas videos? Watch for more holiday titles to be added during the month by going to our library catalog and typing “holiday” or “Christmas” into the main search field, and changing the time period to “New items within 30 days.” I’d like to end the year with heartfelt thanks to our terrific library volunteer staff, and hard-working Friends of the Library board members, for their efforts during this challenging year. Without caring residents serving in these important roles, our Library would not be what it is today–a main destination point for many residents who are spending most of their time staying safe at home, and the only library in the county currently open for browsing after the shutdown. I frequently overhear patrons remark, “I don’t know what I’d do if the Library weren’t open, it’s the only place I go these days,” which makes me appreciate the huge team effort it has taken to reopen and operate the Library for the last half of this year. We are fortunate they call SCOV their home.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Getting Ready for Flu season Proper hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent colds and flu. And it’s easy to do. Start with warm water and your anti-bacterial soap. Work the lather for 20 seconds, paying extra attention to fingernails and jewelry. Singing “Happy Birthday” twice is a good way to judge the

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, December 2020

time. Then rinse and dry your hands. Disposable towels are best so you can use them to turn off the water. This will protect you from putting germs from the faucet right back on your hands. Another easy way to protect yourself is to keep your hands away from your face. Specifically, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. These are the areas where cold viruses gain entry into your system. Keeping your hands away will keep any cold germs on them away as well. If you need to touch these areas, wash your hands before and after. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment will be held every Thursday, 1 PM, so stop in and sign up. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, December 8, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, December 9, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARCforSCOV@gmail.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM Pre-Expansion Meeting Homeowners are strongly encouraged to schedule a preexpansion meeting with the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) prior to having architectural drawings made. This can save a lot of time, money, frustration and disappointment. The ARC will review and approve or deny on a case-by-case basis, and if necessary, can act as a facilitator between the homeowner and neighbors regarding the proposed expansion changes. Contact Kris Ahlstrand to arrange a meeting. ARC members will meet with the homeowner first at the site and go over details of a proposed expansion once the following information is compiled: 1) Illustrate the expansion on a copy of the original Del Webb floor plan. Floor plans are available on the SCOV website. 2) On the homeowner’s property, mark the dimensions of the expansion. 3) Consider the visual effect on neighbor properties, for example, blockage of view(s). 4) Consider the elevation of the home relative to neighbor properties. 5) Consider the positioning of the home on an aerial map showing the homes in relation to each other. (Some homes stagger drastically enough to allow an addition with minimal view obstruction.) 6) Determine the total square footage of the expansion. 7) Be prepared to discuss any roof line change (pitched, flat or combination of roofs). This is determined by the existing roofline. 8) Share expansion information with neighbors.

The paper phone book is with the printer, but the publisher does not know when they will be shipped. “This Week in SCOV” email will have any updates as I get them. So far in 2020, we’ve had 397 changes to the directory! Even though the paper phone book is updated just once per year, you can update your listing in our online directory at any time. The online version is updated monthly, thus always has the most current information. To update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “To change your directory listing….” Alternatively, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center. Do you need someone’s email address or unit number? Those are included only in the online directory, not in the book.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List Susanna Moran scovconsumerservices@gmail.com

The Vendor List is on the SCOV website. After logging in, go to www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/vendor_ consumer-referral. The Vendor List may also be viewed at the monitor’s desk in the Activity Center during business hours when it reopens. Please check the Vendor List, as changes are made frequently. Vendors should email Susanna Moran to inquire about applying to be on the Vendor List.

Election Election 2021 The Election Committee is preparing for another election cycle. There will be two director positions, and expect at least two initiatives for your consideration. The vote will be electronic unless you have opted out of all electronic communications from the Association. If you vote by hard copy, the ballot must be mailed to Florida (the Association is no longer accepting ballots in the Administration office). The “Meet the Candidate” video will provide the opportunity to view and listen to interviews with the candidates. There will be a web page listed under Member Services > Vote March 2021 with information. In February, plans are to have at least two forums where questions will be asked of the candidates, and you can get a feel for their understanding of and passion for SCOV. These forums will also be available by video. If you would like to submit candidate questions for consideration by the Election Committee, please bring them to the Administration office. More details on the candidates and initiatives will be provided as we get closer to the election.

Special Note from the Community Assistance Committee The Community Assistance Committee (CAC) and Loan Room hope that by now, events and facilities are more open. As I write this, current policies are still restrictive for large gatherings. Therefore, the CAC has decided to cancel the Tucked behind the Cart Barn, the Loan CAC Annual Pancake Room is ready to help with household Breakfast scheduled for and medical items for temporary use. January 30, 2021. The decision was made for several reasons. It takes approximately 30 to 40 volunteers to staff and serve the breakfast. Usually this event is well attended and we serve over 400 people. The event not only supports the Loan Room financially but has become a welcome social gathering. To risk exposing any of us, volunteers and residents, to the virus goes against our main purpose. Social distancing and wearing of face masks in a dining situation would be next to impossible. Even if a vaccine has become available, to have everyone in SCOV vaccinated by the end of January 2021 is unrealistic. The Loan Room was closed for 15½ weeks during the pandemic. For that period, medical emergencies were answered by appointment. A total of 67 trips to check out and/or return medical equipment were made. We reLoan Room volunteers assist a resident opened on a limited bawith the selection of a walker sis on July 2 with SCOV approved safety protocols. Currently things are relatively slow and all residents have been cheerfully complying with safety protocols. The primary issue is safety. Canceling the Pancake Breakfast seems to be the wisest course of action. The primary purpose of CAC and the Loan Room is to help our residents with medical emergencies, and the safety of all of our residents and volunteers should be paramount. The Loan Room financially depends on the aluminum can collections, the Annual Pancake Breakfast proceeds and donations. The can collection program was temporarily suspended to protect volunteers, but reopened October 12. Anyone wishing to make a cash or check donation is welcome to drop it off at the Loan Room during normal hours. Gay Russell CAC Chair

The holidays are here. Beautiful lights and decorations are going up at The Views Restaurant, so make plans for a happy hour or dinner to see them. But there is more to experience than mountain grandeur, seasonal lights and holiday service. During this bumpy and uncertain year, the entire staff has remained dedicated to providing quality service, whether running to your vehicle with your call-in order or greeting you in the restaurant with your meal. You may not know it, but behind the scenes of bustling wait staff are a group of generally unheralded individuals who don’t often get much recognition. Think about our chef, cooks, dishwashers, the bussersl and bartenders, all of whom work tirelessly to make your Views Restaurant experience memorable. So, if you feel your service has been exceptional, and you would like to recognize the invisible Views Restaurant staff, the committee would like you to consider a generous gratuity.

The Loan Room has been open since the beginning of July. Our usage numbers are slowly increasing, and residents have been very cooperative wearing masks and socially distancing from staff and each other. Our staff continue to also wear masks, and we sanitize each piece of equipment when it is returned to us before being loaned out again. Our web site is working and is useful to those who wish to reserve items up to two months in advance of need. Please remember the website is for viewing lists of available items and making requests. A reservation is not made until staff review it to make sure we have the item available and can send a confirmation email. Please give us several days for this process. Reservations may also be made directly at the Loan Room in addition to walk-in loans. We are located at the end of the Golf Cart Barn The Loan Room will be closed December 24-31, and reopen on January 5, at 8 AM. We will respond to medical emergencies only during that time.

Golfing experience that provides professional and friendly service, mountain views and excellent conditions.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086

We want to say thank you for another fantastic year. It certainly has had its twists and turns with COVID-19 and all the changes we have all had to make in our lives. However, the year’s highlight was undoubtedly the significant improvements to the golf course with the greens reconstruction project and the new practice tee. We are thinking of you during this holiday season and would like to tell you how much we appreciate your support. Before the year is over, we do not want you to miss the sales in the Pro Shop. Our special Christmas sale will be Friday, December 4. You can pick up that perfect gift or a gift card for the holidays. Also, our Annual Christmas Toy Drive is from Friday, December 4 through Friday, December 11. We are collecting toys for local kids and families in need. If you bring a guest during this week with a toy(s) valued over $30, your guest plays for free. Any toy(s) and food donations are welcome, whether playing golf or not. We appreciate your kind and generous contributions and support. As a reminder, the Pro Shop will be closed Friday, December 25, to allow our team to spend time with our families. However, if you have a private cart and would like to play golf on Christmas Day, you are more than welcome. There will be no scheduled starting times. Also, the driving range is available to hit practice balls if you have a pre-paid range card. I wish you a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Year.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

December is traditionally the month the non-overseeded areas of the golf course go dormant and turn brown. This includes the roughs, perimeters and aprons around the greens, and this year, the new greens. When the Bermuda grass goes dormant, it loses the ability to keep the grass blades vertical and shrinks. This is the reason the blue stake system of directing golf cart traffic onto the fairways and away from the roughs was developed. As the roughs shrink, the lies become tighter and more difficult to play. This is a reminder that the greens, driving range tee, and especially the greens surrounds, were not overseeded due to the construction project. Unfortunately, this will leave some unlevel lies around the greens as the Bermuda shrinks. Seams around areas where sod was installed are a little bit thicker and puffier than other areas which leads to a bumpy surface. These bumps can’t be mowed smooth without cutting the grass that is already shrinking extremely short. The aprons will begin to smooth out when aerification and topdressing start again next spring when the Bermuda grass starts to grow with the warmer weather. The aprons will be aerified and topdressed throughout the spring and

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, December 2020

summer which will drastically improve the conditions. Also, next fall the aprons will be overseeded which will provide a nice playing surface. Please be patient with the dormant conditions throughout the winter. The dormant areas are going to be painted to help with color, but that won’t do anything with the playability around the greens.

Golf Advisory Chair Bill Cocanour 210-771-6541 Sep.-May, first Wed., 2 PM, WC3

Welcome back to all the seasonal residents. The winter months mean later tee times, shorter days and a busy golf course. Remember to check in with the Pro Shop before your tee times. We are now using the gate system, so please be aware of the blue stakes to enter and exit the fairways. To help keep the fairways and greens in great condition, please repair your divots and ball marks. Help keep our homeowners who live on the golf course safe. On holes 10 and 11, remember there is more room to the right than some think.

December finds us creating festive holiday decorations as well as beautiful gifts for friends and family. Pictured is Mary Barr with the many holiday decorations she has enjoyed making in the Clay Studio. Gradually, we are welcoming back our seasonal members who are finding several new dipping glazes to experiment with. Colors like Fern Mist, Dynasty Red and Robin’s Egg Blue give new variety and possibilities for glazing mugs, plates, bowls and so much more. Looking for a gift item? Take a stroll through the Artisan Center courtyard to see the displays. The Clay Club windows are filled with wonderful handmade gift items for sale. Our creative clay artists offer beautiful and functional items. Call the number on the tag near the item and talk to the artist in person.

Our studio door is open Wednesdays, 9 AM-1 PM. You are welcome to join us and add your talents and knowledge to ours. It has been a tradition to have a voluntary and respectful critique of each other’s work at 11 AM. Over the years we have learned so much and inspired each other to paint with passion. Many of us have forged close and dear friendships from working together and participating in shows. In March, we have lunch together at MiTierra. It’s a great time. While we are not able to have our shows, there is always work to enjoy online. This month a Tucson artist, Jaqueline Chandra, was selected to show her work in “The Great American Paint In.” The show documents the experiences of living through the pandemic. Forty-eight states and 250 pieces are represented. To view the collection and even purchase work, go to www.thegreatpaint-in.com. From all of us to you, “Happy New Year!” See you soon.

Japanese Flower Arranging Donald Marier 520-825-4878 dolmar21@gmail.com Nov.-May, Second and Fourth Mon., 2-4 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

We welcome bags from Frys, Safeway, Walmart, Kohls, Basha’s or other similar weight plastic shopping bags. Keep in mind that we cannot use newspaper bags or the thin plastic produce bags for this project. Make sure the bags are clean, flattened and sorted by color (see photo). Photo by Tom Prall Like other hobbies, crafts, and arts, model building can be satisfying even with the limited physical interactions we all have experienced over the past six months. But it’s more fun with others. In addition to the obvious enjoyment that comes with social interactions fueled by coffee and donuts, our friends and colleagues provide encouragement, teach us new skills, offer useful critique, and expand our horizons with new ideas. In the photo, club members Bob Watson, Fred Faust and Dave Scoles pause from their work to illustrate that shared modeling productively continues, even with masks and at a respectful distance. We look forward to sharing our work with friends and visitors. In the meantime, check out our window displays in the Artisan Center.

Things are going well in the Sewing Room with COVID restrictions in place. We can now have up to 10 members in the room at any one time, and so far so good. Several members have returned, and we’re busy making crib sheets out of donated used sheets, sleep sacks, pajama sets, fleece vests and headbands. There is a never-ending need for the items we can sew. If you’re interested in joining us one or two days a week, come by the Sewing Room and visit. We’re happy to show you all the machines we have and provide orientation. Once a member, you can use the Sewing Room for private use during the evening and weekends. As always, we can use donated yarn, used bed sheets (unless used for cactus coverings) and fabric. Cheer Bears

Things are happening in the Artisan Center again, and though it is scaled back from the norm, there is a great amount of activity taking place. Cheer Bears met every other Wednesday all summer, and individuals have Happy elves following COVID protocol been working at their homes cutting and supplying work for the stuffers in the Sewing Room. protocol must be followed and you still have to sign up ahead of time to be allowed in the room, but we still are putting all our love into the bears as always. Many bears are marching out the doors to find happy arms worldwide this year. Remember this is the most wonderful season of all. Bless you all. Machine Embroidery

There is no December meeting. Though the weather here in SCOV is not frightful, we have been working on our Christmas and holiday projects. Christmas designs using machine embroidery are endless. Especially fun is making dishtowels for hostess gifts, such as the cow design shown. Many of us purchase designs from a variety of sources. The list of our favorite sites to purchase designs can be found on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/groups/SCOVMachineEmb/files where you will find a page of our club’s favorites. You might also find a design or two in there for you to download to your computer. Happy holidays. Pet Beds

Jan Bohe 520-825-9725 Tue., 1-3 PM, Artisan Center/Sewing

Can you snip and stuff? Our little furry friends need an extra touch of kindness while waiting for adoption at The Humane Society, so we create soft, comfy pet beds from fabric sewing scraps. We invite you to join us for a laid back afternoon. We could use some larger pieces of fabric for the pillows themselves. If you are interested, use Sewing Room SignUpGenius online calendar www.bit.ly/thimbelena-signup to secure a spot or call me. We are happy to see seasonal residents return. Quilters

Carol Guibert 520-404-1462 Second and Fourth Tue., 1 PM, Desert Oasis/Ocotillo

We’ve had to adjust our activities for the upcoming months. Due to COVID restrictions, we have had to cancel our holiday party that was scheduled for December 4. With 90 members in our club, only allowing 20 to attend would be unfair to everyone. Our annual quilt show which would have been our 20th year has also been cancelled. The huge attendance for the show would exceed all of the new boundaries. However, we will continue to have our two monthly meetings, the second and fourth Tuesdays at Desert Oasis. Again, signups are necessary to control the number of members attending. Hopefully, the new year will bring changes to this way of life.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, or so the song says. As I write this it is still November and I hear a little rain at last, falling on the roof. Many of our summer escapers have returned to SCOV, and the plans for our Adopt-a-Child are well in control thanks to the great organization of Sharon Larsen. Our Toy Distribution is scheduled to take place in the Auditorium December 3, 9 AM. We are looking for hands to help move the items early that morning from the Artisan Rooms to the Auditorium for display and distribution. Please give Pat Norton a call if you can help. We are having new members join our group this year and one new member, Linda Wickline, donated the teddy bears displayed in the picture plus quilts that needed to be completed. The Tapestry Rug Hooking group meets Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. We welcome new members. If you are interested in learning our art, please contact Coni Arseneau or Carrie Wiley. Our club provides instruction and practice materials. Learn more about our group by visiting our website listed above. Group members must reserve a spot on the Sewing Room’s sign-up calendar which requires membership in the Thimblelenas’ Club. Rug hooking began around the 1830s when carpets became popular. Since only rich people could afford to purchase rugs, others had to figure out a way to make their own rugs. Since the poor could not afford fine yarns, they used various other materials around their home. Burlap feed sacks that grains came in were Created by John Shaw. used as the backing material. It wasn’t until the 1930s that rug hooking was embraced by artists, which freed it from its lower-class status.

The Astronomy Club will hopefully resume its activities after the New Year. The NASA spacecraft Osiris-REx was a huge success on October 20 when it picked up a sample of asteroid Bennu. The sample will return to Earth in 2023. The leader of the Osiris-REx team is University of Arizona’s Dante Lauretta. Accomplished from 200 million miles from Earth, this was an astounding scientific achievement. You have the opportunity on December 21 to see the planets Saturn and Jupiter appear very close together in the Southwest sky–the closest since the year 1623. Astronomers call this the “Great Conjunction.” You can see them with your unaided eyes, although binoculars would help. For very early risers, the Geminid meteor shower (one of the best of the year) will peak on December 14. Best viewing will be from midnight until dawn. Meteors will come from the constellation Gemini in the northeastern sky.

Poets Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 520-825-6762 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 10:30 AM-12:30 PM, WC1

We’re all looking for an escape from our shelters these days. Poetry offers options. “A Pandemic Fantasy” is one that has proven effective. The following excerpt provides a good idea of what it’s all about: Freshly trimmed and barbered / he’s resplendent in green / and proud, flexing his limbs / for the fluffy-haired lady next door. The wind has found her tickle-spot / and slyly riffles her leaves, getting / nowhere with his teasing, since / her preening was not for him. Heatwaves rise with the couple’s / amorous glances. Whispers / across the garden wall echo / from the gossiping tongues of shrubs. The old gas grill in the corner, / a surprisingly quiet observer, / hides beneath a canvas drape / that even cloaks her toes. At times I feel that masking / makes me disappear like that… Holiday wishes to all, and may the new year bring an end to this pandemic. Our weekly Zoom meetings continue, 10:30 AM-12:30 PM. It’s looking like no in-person general meetings or class help sessions. Your willing participation in the Zoom-based sessions so far encourages us to consider pushing our Zoom experiences further. There is no reason we can’t develop special interest groups (SIGs) over Zoom. Our technology world is exploding. We have figured out video chat. As a club, we can expand our horizons with an active interest in what is coming. Many of us may not see it, but in the short term, there is a lot to get excited about. Look for my next blog: “Apple’s New Watch.” If you are not receiving emails from the club, contact scovtech@gmail.com.

As its name implies, the main purpose of this club is to bring together members of our community who enjoy cooking, learning new cuisine and socializing over meals. A poll of our club membership found that very few members feel comfortable conducting such activities during the pandemic. We will therefore postpone club gatherings until at least January 2021, at which time we can reassess the situation and decide how to proceed. We hope the membership will continue to hone their cooking skills and explore new foods, so that we can resume our monthly gatherings with a wealth of new theme ideas and recipes. Expect to hear from us in the new year.

This month we feature dear Mousse, a chocolate Lab, who has been a member of Fido’s Friends since 2013. Mousse passed away on September 11 at the ripe old age of 14. He was rescued in 2007 by very lucky Lynne and Jack Wohner. He enMousse joyed living summers at the beach in North Carolina and discovering the joy of desert living in the winter. Mousse was a regular at the Dog Park and looked forward to catching up with his friends in the late afternoon gathering. In the early years he was an energetic ball retriever, but in later years he was mostly interested in scratches and cuddles. Two things are for sure: no matter how long we have our dogs, it is never long enough, and no matter how much love we give them, they give so much more to us. Lynne is a past president of our club. Members, remember your yearly dues and canine shot record updates are needed. See your email for details.

The current pool restrictions have been very difficult to deal with, but we’re happy that the pool is open. Please note: The outside air temperature must be 77 degrees or higher for the class to be held. We meet at 1 PM until further notice.

Pilates classes are now being held for residents at the AFC again. The group mat classes are Mondays, 3-4 PM, and Thursdays, 1:30-2:30 PM. Every class participant is striving to increase their core strength. Your core muscles are deep abdominal and back muscles that help stabilize your pelvis and spine. The Pilates exercises are simple, and each class begins with warm-up exercises, stretching and deep breathing. The instructors oversee us at all times. They modify the most strenuous exercises for anyone with limitations. These classes result in benefits that can’t be beat: better balance (fewer falls), more flexibility (joints move again), increased muscle tone (you’re stronger), more energy and well-being. The cost is $8 cash per class and 2021 annual club dues will be $20 pp. Call Mary if you have any questions at all.

There have been a couple of changes to our protocol since the publication of October’s Tipster. There is no longer a need to to contact a partner or to make reservations to play. Changes to our schedule of play are posted below. We will still need to observe the safety measures set by management as follows: • Use the sanitizer provided at the entry before playing. • Wear masks while in the building and during play time. • Maintain at least 6 ft. distance from other players. • Play singles only, no doubles. • Play is limited to club members and residents at this time. There should generally be two rooms available with two tables in each room, with the exception of Saturdays, when we will only have one room and two tables. Each pair of singles can play for about an hour. Monitors will need time to sanitize tables and equipment before the next group comes in. This is only a temporary arrangement, and we look forward to resuming our normal mode of operation. Schedule Tue., 3:30-5:30 PM, men/women club play Thu., 3:30-5:30 PM, men/women club play Fri., 2-5 PM, men/women open play Sat., 9 AM-noon, men/women club play Sun., 9 AM-5:30 PM, men/women club play (players need to let monitor know at least one hour in advance on Sundays)
